I love people just going completely conspiracy theorist about THE AUTHOR OF THE DRIZZT BOOKS MAKES THOSE POOR WOTC WRITERS CONSULT HIM EVERY TIME THEY NEED TO MAKE DROW CHANGES because 1) I have never seen anything, ever, that suggests that is happening, in fact across editions the sourcebooks have usually just been Writers Doing Their Own Shit, and 2) the guy can't even get his parent company to stop spoiling plot points in his own fucking books. He can't even get them to hire him for more than three books at a time and it's not, as far as I can tell, a renewing contract, he just has to wait and see if they'll let him write a couple more drizzt books with the characters he literally made and popularized. He's not even a regular fucking employee?? Hello???

Playing PL really does feel like all consulting work like– somebody finds you and says they’ve heard of you and want you to do some work and the payment is too good to pass up and you’ve gotta keep networking or you won’t make it in the biz and you show up onsite and have to blend in and are instantly glad you don’t work at this shitshow fulltime. Things go out of scope and off the rails almost instantly, but you pull your shit together because you’re a professional and then against all odds not only do you succeed but you get noticed by some executive– just what you need is someone powerful looking over your shoulder while you’re desperately trying to remain cool and pretend you know what you’re doing. (Do I do this a lot? Fight off a tank sized drone trying to crush all of my bones and burn me to a crisp? Physically, no. Spiritually, yes.)

Then of course your original point of contact goes silent no matter how many times you try to contact them, and you end up having to track down some other person semi in charge to figure out what the fuck is going on and then slowly learn about the internal fucked up politics inside this workplace and you go and scream into your arm because goddamn can anything just go right for once? Who’s managing this fucking project? Eventually your contact gets back to you, somehow texting from jail and assures you everything is fine, even when it’s clearly on Fire and you’d like to go home but if you don’t finish the job you’ll probably never work again.

Someone asks you if you mind dressing up so you can go to some party and you ask does it matter? Does it matter? All of you people are insane. If I survive this it’s going in my memoir. Alligator skin is fine, yeah. Sorry. Your underground lair is pretty cool. 4/5. The last guys had a pool table and didn’t keep telling me stories about how their colleagues tried to get them killed.

feeling weird about a Work Development, which I somehow...figured out ahead of time? by observing various colleagues and mulling over possible causes for their behavior, plus running Bad Hypotheticals in my head.

at the time this seemed paranoid and like an invitation to worry, but in hindsight was good---it means when my boss called me into his office to discuss the Work Development, I sort of already knew and had a script ready to go to discuss it. (Unless you have VP or MD behind your name, this organization doesn’t care about you, is the kind of one-liner I typically only come up with after the conversation; instead, I came up with it beforehand, and got to use it! Weird sort of victory!)

I do think he was nonplussed by my calm, though, and my repeated “I knew this was coming” did not seem to register with him.

The vtuber enjoyer community is currently learning why multi-channel networks didn't work back in the old days of YouTube, except in the present day it's somehow even more fucked because the companies also own their channels and revenue sources and IP.

#vtuber stuff #i do love creators currently in corporations rn but there is a part of me that is annoyed that the only reason theyre so big is due to money #money as in start up costs and advertising and merch production etc etc #and then you cant really publicly advertise that channel is connected to you and your work #which is double fucked if you leave/get fired/whatever after some time and after a certain point dont even get residuals #cant really put it on your resume either and since its a niche of a niche less-online jobs just dont count it as experience without proof #its such cool technology (even just live 2d tracking) but the barrier to entry and ceiling of quality keeps getting higher even year #not to mention the power that these companies have over their talents in the way the industry is currently configured #its even more fucked if you start thinking on a systematic level #but yeah the current nijisanji PR trainwreck is a special kind of fucked #bullying and isolating their talent to the point of a suicide attempt? im not an expert in Canadian law but im pretty sure thats illegal #at the very least niji continually calling selens emergency contact (and probably hospital) to make a statement is probably against the law #seriously hope selen/doki and her family gets some legal consult because this is so fucked up #and the way they fired her is also probably illegal under canadian law
