Crayon as a word is not trustworthy. Let me explain.

These are crayons. Right? No one's contesting that. However...

THESE are not called crayons, they're called wax pastels. Even though they behave like and resemble crayons. (I believe 'wax pastel' simply sounds more like a quality art supply than just 'crayon' which is probably why it is this way.)

And it gets worse:

These sticks are called crayons! Sometimes. They're conté crayons, or just conté, and they behave more like compressed chalk than they do a crayon. It's pigment + clay pressed into a stick.

We can blame this on the French, because the French word crayon means pencil. And art supplies are full of French words. Things get confusing.

But not more confusing than this:

These are colored pencils, right? But in French they're called crayon de couleur and some Canadians call them pencil crayons. Then there's these jerks muddying the water even more

So, yeah, the word "crayon" is... A little all over the place in the art supply world

I like this lady who's standing on my little easel. She's far from perfect, but I think she shows how lines really are overrated. I started with the shadows and then used some white and then did a few lines where the hard edges were. I really like the shape of the pose and some of the bits where light and shade meet.

I used these, by the way, on their sides. The squared edges for the lines and the flat sides for the shadows and lights:

They're broken off bits of Conté hard pastel.

My Accepted Algonquin Animation Portfolio 2024

Hey everyone! My Algonquin portfolio was accepted a few weeks ago and I am so excited to finally get to go to school for animation! I found seeing other people's accepted portfolios extremely helpful when working on mine, so I thought I would post mine to help out anyone applying in the future.

So, before we get started, I want to share a little bit of background information for some context. After graduating high school, got into Sheridan College's Art Fundamentals program, dedicated to spend my time building my portfolio for their Illustration and Animation programs. I overall did not have a good experience at Sheridan, for many reasons I prefer not to go into, and my portfolio for Illustration was rejected. But the whole thing wasn't a total loss, the program definitely helped build my skills. This year I decided to take a gap year to focus even more on my portfolio, unfortunately due to health issues I was only able to complete one, and I choose that one to be the Algonquin Animation portfolio. I hope you enjoy seeing what I have created in the past couple of months, and if it helps you out in any way, that would be even better!

(Also sorry some of the photos/scans aren't the best quality, I didn’t have a lot to work with!)
