I’m only like 70 pages in but already I think this Sojourn novel is the strongest the OW lore-building has ever been. Sojourn makes for a great, grounded protagonist who’s ultimately pretty ordinary - I liked that the reasoning for her cybernetics is because she was born with a degenerative disease and would’ve died without being built basically a whole new body, rather than the ‘keeps modding herself to maintain an edge in combat’ origin story I assumed they were gonna go with.

I like that they’re actually for real committing to depicting the Omnic Crisis, and it’s not dumbed down or with the edges sanded off. Sojourn not being able to save her niece from being drowned by her omnic nanny, describing the dust on everything and the sheets they’ve thrown over human casualties in the streets, the plane falling out of the sky and crashing right into the heart of Toronto because omnics on board presumably overwhelmed the pilot, all of those little details really make for some vivid imagery of how it was and make the staunchly anti-omnic characters seem a bit more understandable.

I also think the writing’s really good, even though I don’t usually love present-tense writing. Not too flowery OR too simple (which was a major issue I had with Orisa’s novel and to a lesser extent Deadlock Rebels, too). I think it strikes a good balance that both kids and adults can enjoy.

My only major complaint tbh was the price - $28 USD for a 211-page novel is nuts, I don’t care how fancy a hardcover it is lmao. If this hadn’t been a Christmas present from my mom, no way I would’ve paid that.
