Everyday I pray that if we do ever get aa7 it focus on Apollo and not Phoenix. Not because Apollo is my favourite character (he is), not because it guarantees Ace Attorney fake countries (it does), not be cause I'm tired of Phoenix Wright (I am), but, because I want to see Apollo as a mentor. I want to see him teach someone else! I want to see him come to terms with the harmful behaviours he was taught by both Kristoph and Phoenix and work to not pass on those behaviours to his protégé. I want his protégé to cast suspicions on some they care about ala 5-5 and I want them to trust Apollo enough to turn to him and ask for advice. I want Apollo to reflect on how the people who taught him hurt him and work to avoid passing on those behaviours to his protégé. I want him to break the cycle!

Character Analysis: Reyna
Slowly going to be posting the entire character analysis. I will be linking all the parts as they get posted and will post a master list at the end.
Part 1: Similarities Noticed By Others
Just as a reminder/disclaimer while reading, the page numbers seen below may not line up with a physical copy of the books since I got them based on my digital copies. It may feel a bit essay-like, so sorry in advance for that it helps me be more precise with my words. And for obvious reasons everything below this paragraph contains spoilers to Heroes of Olympus books The Son of Neptune through The Blood of Olympus as well as Trials of Apollo: The Tyrant’s Tomb
This section is about a collection of traits that others have noticed. It may not be everything every character noted.
Each of these may be full character traits that become obvious to a standard viewer fairly easily such as during first impressions. These traits include: Controlling emotions well, not liking to be questioned when working, her work load, being different from expected, appearance/similarities to sibling, has lost a lot.
This section will stay as close to the books as possible while focusing on Reyna and not the person who made the observations about her. It is okay to consider this section as a brief overview that may contain things most readers already know.
Doesn’t Like to be Questioned
As leader of Camp Jupiter, one of Reyna’s jobs is to make sure things run smoothly meaning when she gives an order she expects it to be followed. As a military leader one can’t have their orders questioned. By the time The Son of Neptune happens Reyna has built enough respect and respect for her authority that her orders, for the most part, aren’t questioned. Frank tries to include himself and give Reyna his report of what happened on page 27 of The Son of Neptune and Reyna shuts it down. The less problems means there is less Reyna has to deal with. Even with her orders being verbally questioned every so often, it is noticeable to people like Percy, Annabeth, and even Apollo that staying quiet is sometimes the best option. For example, at the beginning of The Son of Neptune Percy understands “that if he argued with her about it.. In front of her soldiers, she wouldn’t appreciate it” (page 24).
There are at least two methods Reyna uses to make sure her orders are followed. In The Tyrant's Tomb Apollo notes Reyna’s tone of voice as discouraging “follow-up questions,” and as what was said not being a question (page 95 and 139). in The Mark of Athena, Annabeth notes how Octavian stopped arguing with Reyna due to Reyna’s expression (page 30)
Controls Expression of Emotions Well
Percy and Annabeth both noted Reyna’s “excellent poker face” that didn’t reveal her thoughts (The Mark of Athena, page 29; The House of Hades page 417). There are two ways in which this can be understood: 1) Reyna normally isn’t very expressive, 2) it’s a mask that comes with being Preator. Based off other’s perspectives, it's the latter. Piper’s perspective tells of how she admires Reyna for keeping her feelings in check- something she could sense as a daughter of Aphrodite (The Mark of Athena page 84). Percy’s perspective in The Son of Neptune says “She looked at Percy, and for just a moment he could see how scared she was. She did a good job of hiding it” (106). Both their perspectives demonstrate how Reyna’s poker face is more of a mask.
Weight of Responsibility
Pretty early in The Son of Neptune Percy finds out Reyna is the only Praetor camp currently has. Just before he leaves for his quest to Alaska it becomes clear what that means for Reyna. Page 112 tells how Reyna bears the responsibility for the safety of Camp Jupiter and how she was desperately trying to find ways to save it (The Son of Neptune). The weight of her responsibility shows in Jason’s perspective in The House of Hades through his guilt relating to his disappearance, return and abrupt departure as Jason understands what she has gone through and what she is up against- an upcoming war (page 182).
Even after Heroes of Olympus, there is an understanding that being Praetor is a huge toll on the person in office such as when Frank expresses worry for Reyna who has been praetor years longer than he has (Tyrants Tomb page 111). Apollo finds himself wondering “how crushing her work” is that “she was looking forward to going on an adventure across the bay to kill a god” (Tyrant's Tomb page 142).
It isn’t lost on anyone how large the responsibility is as Praetor. Reyna’s contribution to Camp Jupiter and New Rome is recognised at the end of Tyrant's Tomb when Reyna gives her resignation speech-which will be touched on later. Almost every character with accessible points of view recognises this in some way, though they may not know what it means to Reyna- Piper gets the closest (and maybe Nico) and this will be touched on later.
Different From Expected
This section is shorter than the previous three. The reason for this is that there is a limited number of points of view from people that had an idea of who Reyna was before actually meeting her (Annabeth, Apollo, and Piper). Part of Annabeth’s original impression of Reyna was that Reyna that Reyna was someone she was prepared to negotiate with and even fight at the beginning of The Mark of Athena; this preparation was not needed as she learned more about Reyna and came to feel a bit sorry for her (page 36). Piper’s original impression/preparation is much simpler than Annabeth’s going from prepared to hate Reyna to that not happening upon meeting her (The Mark of Athena page 84). Neither one of these changes in perception really reveal much about Reyna herself besides potentially showing the difference between knowing her position and general appearance and how she is once you start talking to her. If anything the changes in perception show the beginning of how Reyna’s relationship with Piper and Annabeth changes from The Mark of Athena to The Blood of Olympus.
Has Lost A Lot
It is possible to make a loose connection between this section and the Weight of Responsibility section-that connection being they’re probably in some way related. Other than that, based on the points of view of Percy and Annabeth there isn’t much they noticed that connect the two. What they have noticed reveals a bit more about Reyna without much context (because they don’t know the specifics either).
In The Mark of Athena, Annabeth claims, “The praetor was too alone, too bitter and betrayed to believe anything could go right for her ever again,”, and in The House of Hades Percy figures out “that she’s given up too much in her life already” following a statement about how Reyna had to put down her pegasus- both their assumptions would later be shown to be true in The Blood of Olympus (199 and 411).
General Appearance
Appearance doesn’t necessarily 100% connect to one’s character, but appearance does connect to how first impressions are made. In addition consistency in a few features can provide a better view to how a character looks and potentially how they act.
There is no need to list every single description of a character’s physical appearance, but to mention a few consistencies: Piercing eyes, armor decorated by metals, beautiful (The Son of Neptune page 23, Tyrants Tomb page 43 , The Mark of Athena page 18, The Blood of Olympus page 322). We also know that Reyna and Hylla have a lot of similarities and people are reminded of one or the other depending on who they are speaking to such as in the following two quotes from The Son of Neptune and The Blood of Olympus: “Hazel couldn’t believe how much she looked like Reyna,” and “You remind me so much of your sister,” (page 188, 147).

Personal Entry #13
I’m supposed to be meeting the Muses right now. Or maybe talking with Hermes about the newest social media, I can’t remember. What I really need to do is go back to the throne room to apologize to Father. I’m sure he doesn’t appreciate me storming out in the middle of our conversation.
I’m not going to do any of that. Father can throw me into Tartarus for all I care, if I spend one more second in this godsforskan city I’ll lose my mind. I’d feel better if I could visit any of my mortal friends, but apparently even visiting my children once every three months is “pushing it.” Thanks a lot Dad.
So I’m going to write in here. A public service, really, because I’m sure if I wasn’t writing right now I’d be shooting arrows places they really don’t belong.
I miss Meg.
I can’t visit her. That’s my father’s bargain. According to him, the threads of reality can’t handle me visiting both Meg and my children so frequently. I wasn’t aware the Fates wove such a fragile tapestry, but I digress. I could’ve chosen Meg, but at the cost of all of my children? They needed me, and I couldn’t abandon my responsibility to them as a parent just because I would lose my closest friend.
But I’m not dumb, or blind, no matter how much Father thinks it of me. I see his plan. Right now, I am forbidden from any contact with Meg. Visiting her, talking to her, even looking at her from the sun chariot. I have no idea how she’s faring, or if she’s safe. Anything could happen. All it would take is my Father having one little “accident” and she could be
.
Maybe I’m overthinking this. I haven’t slept well in weeks, I’m sure it’s making me paranoid. I’ll rest now. Maybe visit Dionysus tomorrow. I think out of everyone in the family, I can share the most with him. And maybe I’ll catch a glimpse of my kids at camp. I’m doing this for them.
I’m doing this for them.
Please Meg, by any power out there, please stay safe.

I found this at an antique store today and added it to my small-but-growing “odd space memorabilia” collection. It’s a record that was produced after the Challenger disaster to help fund the creation of Challenger Centers, non-profit space education centers built by the families of the Challenger astronauts to carry on their family members’ legacies.
