Lingthusiasm Episode 87: If I were an irrealis episode
Language lets us talk about things that aren't, strictly speaking, entirely real. Sometimes that's an imaginative object (is a toy sword a real sword? how about Excalibur?). Other times, it's a hypothetical situation (such as "if it rains, we'll cancel the picnic" - but neither the picnic nor the rain have happened yet. And they might never happen. But also they might!). Languages have lots of different ways of talking about different kinds of speculative events, and together they're called the irrealis.
In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about some of our favourite examples under the irrealis umbrella. We talk about various things that we can mean by "reality", such as how existing fictional concepts, like goblins playing Macbeth, differ from newly-constructed fictions, like our new creature the Frenumblinger. We also talk about hypothetical statements using "if" (including the delightfully-named "biscuit conditionals), and using the "if I were a rich man" (Fiddler on the Roof) to "if I was a rich girl" (Gwen Stefani) continuum to track the evolution of the English subjunctive. Finally, a few of our favourite additional types of irrealis categories: the hortative, used to urge or exhort (let's go!), the optative, to express wishes and hopes (if only...), the dubitative, for when you doubt something, and the desiderative (I wish...).

Announcements:
Thank you to everyone who shared Lingthusiasm with a friend or on social media for our seventh anniversary! It was great to see what you love about Lingthusiasm and which episodes you chose to share. We hope you enjoyed the warm fuzzies!
In this month’s bonus episode, Gretchen gets enthusiastic about swearing (including rude gestures) in fiction with science fiction and fantasy authors Jo Walton and Ada Palmer, authors of the Thessaly books and Terra Ignota series, both super interesting series we've ling-nerded out about before on the show. We talk about invented swear words like "frak" and "frell", sweary lexical gaps (why don't we swear with "toe jam!"), and interpreting the nuances of regional swear words like "bloody" in fiction.
Join us on Patreon now to get access to this and 80+ other bonus episodes! You’ll also get access to the Lingthusiasm Discord server where you can chat with other language nerds.

last night
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
( pairing ) : five hargreeves x reader
( about ) : five hargreeves does not dance, but he has to make an exception for the prettiest person in the room on his last night on earth, right?
( warnings ) : profanity, typical pre-apocalyptic angst, right person not enough time trope, some jealous five (or may be that’s a bonus. it’s up to you)
( words ) : 2900
( note ) : i never know how to handle the whole 58-year-old in his 13-year-old body scenario, but for the sake of simplicity let’s just say that the reader is also mentally 50 or so who worked for the Commission. they’ve known each other for like a decade and have been working as partners. anything for a dose of typical old couple sweetness ig <3
You’ve never been to a wedding until now. Fifty-something years of living (because you lost track after that, honestly) and not a single chance to watch a bride walk down the aisle in white, her lover at the altar.
Well, you guess you can thank Sloane and Luther for letting you cross that off your pre-apocalyptic bucket list.
It’s a shame, really, the many decades you’ve lived and wasted. There’s not much time to attend weddings in between assassinations for an organization that’s located outside of the timeline. If only you existed outside of it, too.
It’s a weird topic — one you’ve always found difficult to talk about because, realistically speaking, who else can relate to feeling lonely because they spent years serving a time-traveling agency responsible for maintaining the time-space continuum which practically stripped them of all long-term acquaintances?
Well, there might be one person.
Five Hargreeves has always been a tough code to crack. He isn’t unreadable, per se. He’s just incredibly stubborn. You thought, at first, it might have been a recent development. Maybe the bitterness had come with old age. But seeing as his siblings barely bat an eye to his behavior, after seventeen years of being presumed dead, you figure he’s always been like this.
In his defense, you have a few decades’ worth of tolerance for human interaction. Five likes to think that he isn’t a particularly nasty person. He simply hasn’t found more people worth having around for company. Of course, there is one.
You watch him, standing right next to you in a black suit so similar to his Commission attire it gives you a sense of deja vu. Nothing unpleasant, just yearnful of simpler times. Back then, it had just been the two of you against the world – literally, but it had been fun, nonetheless.
Sloane and Luther do the honors of stepping onto the dancefloor first, followed by Diego and Lila, as the song starts playing.
A couple’s dance in the current state of the universe? Alright, it’s kind of sweet.
“This is officially worse than the apocalypse.” And there he goes, the bright beam of sunshine.
“Right now? Really?” You roll your eyes, disappointed that the moment is ruined. He’s silent for a while, his eyes scanning the room until they land on a bucket of wine and champagne.
“Ah, there we are,” he says to himself. You catch his arm just before he turns away.
“Hey, where are you going?”
“I’m getting wasted,” he shrugged off. “Want anything?” You hit his arm.
“You are not getting wasted on your last night alive!” He laughs it off, like he knows something you don’t. You think he’s probably holding onto a monologue about the benefits of intoxication as opposed to sobriety on an instance as stressful as a Kugelblitz. This wouldn’t exactly be the first time.
In truth, you’re not far off. He would, as a matter of fact, much prefer to numb his mind before Hell freezes over. Of course, not that he would actually be there to watch it happen this time. Stil, he fears the permanence of what’s next to come, and he’s paralyzed by the knowledge that he can’t do anything to stop it.
But Y/N is talking to him, trying to get him to gather whatever’s left of his courage and sanity. You were always doing that. Why were you always doing that?
“What else am I supposed to do? Dance?”
You stay silent, just a second or two, which is apparently enough for Five to figure out that dancing is, in fact, exactly what you’re suggesting.
“You’re kidding.”
“No, no. I’m dead serious.”
“What makes you think I’d want to dance?” It comes out much harsher than he’d intended, and he almost wants to clarify that his question didn’t end in ‘with you’ because he didn’t particularly dislike the scenario if he could enjoy it with you. If only it were under better circumstances.
“You’re a gentleman?”
“We’re too old to be dancing.”
“You’re physically thirteen. Your hip won’t give out if you sway for a few minutes.” He swats your hand away from his arm, his face contorting to a combination of equal exhaustion and exasperation.
His hips might not fail him, but what of the rest of him? Five isn’t sure he can stay upright for too long if the two of you stood any closer together.
“That’s not what I mean. We’re bordering on sixty, Y/N. We have other things to worry about.”
“No, actually, we don’t. We die tomorrow, and correct me if I’m wrong, but that doesn’t exactly give us enough time to worry about retirement or funeral plans.”
“That’s fair, but dancing?” he quips again, like it’s the most ridiculous idea he’s ever heard of. You have the mind to tell him that you’ve successfully arranged a wedding with a few hour’s notice while the rest of the universe perished. How’s that for ridiculous?
“I’m only trying to keep you from getting drunk and doing anything embarrassing.” This startles Five. He’s blacked out before, sure, but he can remember most of everything when he wakes up. Doesn’t he?
“When have I ever done anything like that?”
“Oh, I don’t know. There was that one time you got hammered and professed your undying love for me.”
“What?” Now, you see Lila’s point. Five’s a funny guy. Pissing him off is very therapeutic.
“I’m kidding. You just blacked out and kept saying my name in your sleep.”
“I did not!”
“How would you know? You were asleep.”
“I’m still not dancing.” You flash him a mischievous grin.
It makes him nervous. Nothing good – not by his standards, that is – ever comes from that smile. It’s evil and taunting, founded entirely by malicious intent.
“Oh, I get it! You suck at dancing. The Temps Commission’s best assassin has two left feet! Oh, that’s adorable.” He scoffs, like you’ve said something unbelievable. It’s a fair reaction considering… Well, since when has Five Hargreeves been bad at anything?
“I’m not falling for that.” You place a comforting hand on his waist, bringing him closer. He stares but doesn’t try to pry you off.
He tries not to scream.
“Did you just grab my waist?”
“I’m an affectionate drunk.”
“You’re completely sober.”
“Weddings make me touchy-feely,” you tell him with a grin.
“You can dance with Klaus.” You sigh, withdrawing your arm around him.
If insulting his dancing skills didn’t work, it was time to get serious.
“There’s no need to deny it. Not everyone can be blessed with talent. It isn’t anything to be ashamed of. There was this one guy that took me dancing in ‘62. He was great, but he kept stepping on my right foot. Sometimes, if I shut my eyes, I can still feel it.”
You make a show of lifting your attire just high enough to reveal your shoes, setting your right foot forward. Five eyes you suspiciously.
You did what in ‘62?
“When did that happen?” He prides himself in not sounding too upset, just enough so he could pass it off as disappointment that you’ve wasted time dawdling as opposed to blinding hatred, if you ask.
“A few months ago. Might have been Christmas… no. It was New Year’s Eve, I’m pretty sure.  You know, before you came knocking on my door in ‘63 to announce the second apocalypse like the four freaking horsemen. You’re lucky Reginald didn’t make you Number Four, honestly.” Your joke misses him completely. You swear he turns green with envy. It’s absolutely thrilling.
“And you just danced with some random guy?” He calms down a little.
“A very generous lover.”
Lover?! he almost says aloud.
“But, alas, we just weren’t meant to be,” you say dramatically, faking a swoon, and staring into space to mock a pitiful look of longing.
You’re not too surprised to find him trying to link your arms together only seconds later.
“What are you doing?” Five drags you to the dancefloor, an arm hooked with yours.
“Giving you a dance that doesn’t end with your feet swollen.”
“Ah, so you’re doing me a favor?”
“Obviously.”
“Five Hargreeves doing something against his will entirely for someone else’s happiness? My, the world really is ending.”
Not just any ‘someone,’ he thinks. Just you.
“Happiness?” he echoes, sounding impressed. “Good to know you think so highly of me.”
The smug bastard.
“I’m ecstatic! Couldn’t you tell? I’m spending the last dance of my life with a bitter old man simultaneously going through puberty and some male version of menopause.”
“What was that? I couldn’t hear you over the joy radiating from you. My doing, was it?”
“You’re an ass. You’re terrible company. I should have let the other guy keep his spot as my last dance.”
“Weren’t you the one who wanted to dance with me?”
“Yeah, but I’d rather you step on my foot than crush dreams.”
“Oh, now I’m your ‘dream?’”
“No, moron. I wanted to dance. It was on my bucket-list and everything. You don’t happen to know Tango, do you?”
“You have a bucket list?”
Five looks away, hiding the hint of a smile tugging at his lips. It’s a rare treasure to lure any genuine sign of joy from him that doesn’t come in the form of snark and sarcasm. You suppose you’re lucky enough to have seen it multiple times. You might be the luckiest person in the world for being able to have the real thing, time limit aside.
“Some of us have dreams that don’t include dying from alcohol poisoning.”
“Absolutely,” he brushes aside, “What’s next on the list? Eating fries with ice cream? Staying awake through a movie marathon? What beats ‘dancing with someone who won’t break all ten of my toes?’”
Even as you bicker back and forth, you find your fingers intertwined with his. His other hand rests gently on the small of your back and you bring him close with an arm around his shoulder. It’s a wonder how the two of you fit together so naturally, so seamlessly in spite of the way your words constantly clash. He’s composed entirely of rough edges, jagged stone melding with equally stubborn steel. That’s what the two of you have always been like – a symphony of crescendos set to make the world tremble.
It has always been embedded into your mind that if you were destined to bring the world to ruin, you would do it together. But now the two of you will watch as it falls apart, powerless to the ruination of a life you want to conquer. The universe must think itself hilarious.
“What is it? I can practically hear you thinking.”
“I don’t think telepathy is one of your powers.”
“I’m serious, Y/N. What are you thinking?” His brows furrow with concern and you smile because, not that you’ve necessarily forgotten, but it’s a reminder that he cares.
“Nothing.” You shake your head, looking a little dazed. ”But don’t you think… Well… We look kind of funny, don’t we?”
Well, not really. Personally, he thinks you look breathtaking.
“You look terrible. Leave me out of it.” Five smiles. “Honestly, when someone forces you to dance you think they’d at least try not to step on your feet.”
“Oh, Five Hargreeves, you are a man of many, many words. You really know how to flatter a person. Who knew you could be so romantic?” You lift your arm from his shoulder, tousling his perfectly combed hair. He pinches your side in retaliation.
“Hey! Rude!”
“You deserved it.”
“You started it!”
“No, you did. But, alright, I’ll humor you. Why do we look funny?”
“Shit, where should I start? We’re in our late fifties and we look just barely out of middle school.”
“Hm, never would have thought of that.”
“I had to set up a wedding reception in less than a day! Do you know how hard it is to find flowers when the planet is literally falling apart? There is not a single garden within the one-mile radius that’s left around here!”
“I can imagine.” Five is grinning so wide, you’re compelled to act as an extension. It’s like your mouth feels obligated to do the same – to express the utter joy no single person is capable of expressing.
Five doesn’t understand how he can feel so weightless in spite of everything. With one foot in his grave, how is it possible that he feels so delightfully unburdened?
“And you are laughing at my very visible distress! We’re the last of mankind and we’re dancing in fancy suits and dresses in a creepy, ancient hotel like a couple of teenagers at prom! And you find it funny!”
Oh, of course. He feels delighted because you’re here.
“I think you’re funny.”
“I know, I’m hilarious!” Five shakes his head, clearly amused.
“And to think I was actually worried.”
“About me?”
“Who else?” Your eyes soften, an expression clearly screaming awe exchanging any and all concern. His face contorts, nose scrunching the way it always does when he tries to look irritated.
He’s not. He’s wonderful.
“That might be the sweetest thing you’ve ever—”
“Don’t ruin it.”
“Don’t act like you’re not enjoying this.”
“Bickering with you? I’d have to be a lunatic to enjoy that.”
“My point still stands, now with supporting evidence you provided.”
“That’s doesn’t—”
“They were your words! You said them yourself, Five, and I know too goddam well you don’t say anything you don’t mean.”
“And you know me so well, don’t you?” It’s a challenge, maybe even an invitation to drive the conversation closer to the flames, but you feel too tired to pull through. Not of him — never of him. Still, there’s something about knowing that what happens tonight is the end-all-be-all. Is this how you want to spend the last moments of your life? Your last moments with Five? You feel the fire extinguish, tucking away the childishness of the interaction. Instead, you say, as genuinely as you can muster:
“Yeah. I like to think so. I would like to, at the very least.” Five catches the change in your tone – the wistful and longing plea. If you know him, he knows you just as well. Because he cares, no matter how badly he wants to believe otherwise. So he understands what you wish for, hears the grief in your voice because the two of you know that with the world ending there’s no time to get to know each other.
There’s no time to get to love each other — not for the numerous flaws you’ve discovered, and certainly not for those left unveiled.
“Fifty-eight years and it just wasn’t enough, was it?” The two of you share a mutual understanding then, exchanged entirely through glittering eyes under dim lights, that the loss is something for the both of you to mourn.
“Guess not. But that’s just another dream to bury, right?” You try to smile. Really, you do. But Five suddenly looks anguished, maybe because you’d been so quick to admit defeat.
“It shouldn’t have to be. Ten years that I wasted — ten years where you were right there, but I couldn’t be bothered to get my shit together. Fuck, how did we get here?”
“Do you think an entire lifetime would have been enough?” you whisper, hoping that the question won’t sound too grim or lacking faith of what you two could have been. The last thing you want is to make him doubt the reality of what you do have.
“Probably not,” he whispers back, “But it still would have been nice to have that with you.” He sounds so despaired you could weep. “I thought I could, you know. When we got back here, I thought we could start over. I thought I could fix things. Seems like I’m always wrong, nowadays.”
“For what it’s worth, you were right about one thing.” Five chokes out a laugh, low and uncertain.
You hate it.
You want to rid him of doubt and revive the version of him who had been so sure of himself and what the world had to offer. You want the stubborn, unrelenting man with enough willpower to last the both of you for lifetimes.
“I think I’ll need you to remind me when,” he says in a way so devoid of hope that you can hear your heart shatter.
“You were right about you being my dream. You have been… for a long time.”
The dance comes to a halt as Five’s feet remain planted. A handful of emotions flash through his eyes, down the entirety of his face, all far too quickly for you to distinguish. There’s a glimpse of confusion and disbelief, then of something more intense. You’re scared it might be anger or disgust. Or worse, it could be pity.
But then your hands are encased in his, and the gesture is so wonderfully gentle that your anxiety dissipates almost entirely, a fraction only remaining in anticipation for what comes next. You watch as Five battles himself, his grasp tightening with every victory that passes.
Silently, he allows himself reprieve and braces as his walls come down.
You’re her dream, his own voice reverberates in his mind. You have been, for a long time. For what might as well be the first time, he lets go.
“So have you.”

Owlish Elain
Tumblr media
This is a Maasverse post, so there are probably spoilers for all three series below.
With owls in the title (statue) and cover (eyes, thanks to SerpentWyrd on Reddit) reveals for hofas, I am once again thinking about their connections to Elain. I’ve mentioned owls repeatedly across different posts, most recently in Elain's witch series, so I thought it would be fun to compile all of the connections here. If I’ve missed any connections, I’d love to know about it in comments and/or reblogs.
Connections to mythology:
Elain's story is believed to be inspired by the myth of Blodeuwedd, a spring maiden who is transformed into an owl in Welsh mythology. Like Elain, owls were believed to have mystical and prophetic powers, and the myths surrounding them were full of contradictions. They were associated with mythical beings and ancient goddesses, who at one point in history, represented a continuum of life and death (life, death, and rebirth). They were feared as bearers of death, and were admired as otherworldly messengers and solemn protectors. As a symbol linked to Athena, the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology, they were viewed as a good omen: a sign of victory in battle. Some believed they had an inner light that enabled them to see in the dark (and after years of research, we know their sight and hearing have been adapted for hunting, giving them excellent precision; some can even hunt on sound alone in complete darkness). They were also viewed as a bad omen: a sign of catastrophe and death. This dark aspect is connected to Lilith, a woman, demon, and goddess in various legends who is linked to witchcraft. In Roman mythology, owls were believed to be transformed witches who drank the blood of infants.
Connections to witches:
Owls and witches are connected in mythology, so it isn’t surprising that Sarah gives at least one of her witch clans similar features. Feyre and Nesta point out Elain's figurative claws and teeth in acosf/acosf bonus content, which may be a hint of what she hides in the shadows: a beautiful ironteeth monster. Ironteeth witches were gifted iron from the Three-Faced Goddess to prevent magic from pulling them away. It acted as an anchor to the earth, which makes me wonder just how many witches possess some form of Sight, and whether Elain’s collection of iron serves the same purpose. The biggest connection by far, though, is that ironteeth witches also blink into place a clear eyelid, similar to what owls possess, to protect their vision as they fly. Elain often blinks like an owl when she uses her Sight, and her sister, Feyre, blinks when she is released from the Cauldron's mystic-like power as it traveled across the battlefield in various animal forms.
Connections to shifting form:
Nesta and Amren share otherworldly eyes, a connection that was foreshadowed by a family dinner conversation where Nesta boldly questioned Amren about her eyes. @kimsnnn noticed this conversation parallels Elain’s questions about Amren’s form at another family dinner in acofas. If this is a hint (and I hope it is), Elain and Amren might share otherworldly forms. Rhys makes a connection between them at another family dinner and interestingly, it also centers on transformation: “Some were as lovely as you, Elain,” Rhys said from beside Feyre, “from the outside. But once they set foot into the arena of battle, they became as bloodthirsty as Amren.” (acosf) We've seen Amren’s form on the battlefield and know it behaves like an otherworldly bird of prey. And in that same battle, we’ve seen Elain appear suddenly and take out a king’s throat to protect her family. I’m just hoping this transformation, if it happens, also comes with wings.
Connections to healing:
From what we learned in Tower of Dawn (tod), healers bridge life and death. Their light can bind wounds and devour darkness. They can sense Death when it is near. They are also linked to owls through the goddess Silba and Maeve used this knowledge to her advantage to create her own secret army of protectors. The best weapon against the Valg (also referred to as demons) was not a blade, but healing light. Sarah describes the various owls carved into the healers’ tower (Torre Cesme, meaning Tower of Dawn), and one in particular stands out: “Even though it perched atop a gnarled branch of iron that flowed across the door itself, wings flared wide as it prepared to leap into the skies, it seemed … alert. Aware of all who passed that door, who perhaps gazed too long in the direction of the workshop.” (tod) This owl reminds me of those with the gift of Sight, like Elain. She also maintains her own herb garden, like a healer, and is consistently compared to the dawn. Add the possibility of shifting into a bird of prey, and we’ve got very powerful connections here.
Connections to the song of the wind:
When Elain tracks down the Suriel, she notes that it travels like the breath of the western wind. In other words, it travels like an owl: a shadow on the wind. Elain starts moving similarly after this scene and continues to surprise others with her swift appearance. It’s probably also intentional that the first question she asks Azriel relates to his ability to fly, which he connects to the song of the wind. Witches also possess power related to wind and use it to create brooms that allow them to fly. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elain has learned to move like the wind by watching others (especially Azriel, whom she observes closely) and listening to its call.
Connections to those with Sight:
When Feyre is bound to the Cauldron, she travels with it as it flies through the world. It continuously shifts animal form (like Urd) when it searches for someone, but it begins in what I assume is a bird of prey. Elain seems to possess the ability to move like this fluid form with her Cauldron-gifted Sight. This might even be how mystics travel and search for answers, which often first requires them to find specific creatures. The Suriel’s comment about seeing Elain’s doe eyes search for it across the realm is a big hint, as is Feyre’s comment on Elain wandering in her Sight.
If Elain isn’t connected to owls, my friends, we riot. 😆

Dumb LMK fic prompt, where MK gets thrown back in time to post JTTW time(magic also giving him a monkey form because reasons)
He ends up being found by PIF who takes one look at him and is like ‘Are you fucking kidding me that FUCKING SIMIAN KNOCKED UP MACAQUE!’ MK is trying to explain that he is not the Monkey King and Mac’s kid but PIF is not buying it he does look way too much like the two of them in Monkie form and having the Monkey Kings powers...PIF is 110% convinced he is the Monkey Kings kid... he tries explaining that he’s the Monkey Kings successor and was human and is from the future...PIF just thinks he must have hit his head or something and is confused but is undeniably Mac and SWK’s kid.
MK is kinda scared she’s going to kill him but
PIF: THAT ABSOULTE BASTARD NOT ONLY DID HE KILL MY BEST FRIEND
MK:Wait your what?
PIF:AND HIS MATE
MK:...WAIT WHAT?
PIF:BUT HE ALSO KNOCKED HIM UP FIRST! AND NEITHER TOLD ME! UGH I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS
MK: Because it’s not true but sorry what did you say about the Monkey king and Macaque being ma...
PIF:I TOLD LIU ER A MILLION TIMES HE COULD SO MUCH BETTER AND NOW, OH I AM GOING TO MARCH DOWN INTO HELL AND DRAG THAT MORON OUT
MK:No sorry please go back Monkey king and Macaque were what now?
PIF instead of killing him just drags very confused MK back explaining that he’s basically part of the family and she is not letting him go back to his ‘deadbeat simian dumbass’ of a father that she’s getting Mac back finding a way to get DBK out and then they’ll find someone worthy to set his other father up with no matter what he says because clearly his taste is the worst.
MK is just so confused... things get worse when he meets younger Red Son, who instantly falls head over heels for MK and MK is very embarrassed and awkward and somehow ends up letting DBK out because he moves the staff and now he’s freaking out about space time continuum and dealing with PIF matchmaking him and Red Son and everyone thinking he’s Mac and SWK’s kid.
SWK is very very confused by the angry letters he’s getting from PIF calling him deadbeat and threatening to castrate him he feels like he should be worried.
The court of heaven see MK and are like ‘…FUCK WHEN DID SUN WUKONG HAVE A KID?’ and then ‘Wait doesn’t this kid look the six eared…OH FUCK’ the court of heaven freaking out over 1)SWK having a kid who seems to have his powers oh no oh no oh no (The Jade emperor is hyperventilating and hiding under his desk) 2)SWK BEING A PARENT! And 3) SWK’s mate being dead….
It’s kinda decided very quickly that the six eared Macaque was the more rational one….apart from the unpleasantness at the end… that the court of heaven still feel awkward about cause they were meant to send someone to tell the Monkey kings mate about what was going on but sort of ….forgot (times weird and by the time someone figured it out… it was to late) so they pull some strings and Macaque is back alive.
Court of heaven: Hey sorry about all that um… please go make sure your kid doesn’t wage war on heaven…please
Mac:…
Mac:My what now?
Bonus
PIF:Oh you idiot I told you that Simian was the worst oh I’m so glad your back
PIF:…oh my the way your kids engaged to my son
Mac:…I’m sorry my WHAT NOW?

NSFW OC Questions - Fun stuff under the cut! MINORS DNI!!!
12. Would they be more or less likely to send a risky/risque text to their partner in the middle of a crowded/public area?
Far more likely! The easier they get flustered the better. She’s so mischievous and loves seeing the look on their face when they read the text, and then look up and make eye contact with her.
14. If they send nudes, are they tasteful or just quick pics?
She loves sending a tasteful nude, and she’s going to go all out to make sure she looks her best, down to what jewelry she has on. She loves body jewelry, so she likes taking photos with only those pieces on 👀
19. When they “dress-up” for sex, what’s their go-to outfit? Lingerie, suit, gown, etc.?
Daria loves high-end lingerie. She’s that woman whose bra and panties match every single day. But she has special sets for spicy times, and they’re usually in her partner’s favorite colors.
20. What do they like seeing their partner in when they “dress-up?”
A tailored suit or custom gown (that hugs her partner’s body) will definitely get and keep her attention. Bonus HC: she loves it when her partner fucks her fully dressed while she’s naked or just in her lingerie. 👀
22. Favorite thing/part about sex—intimacy, role-playing, etc.
Her favorite thing is the vulnerability. She likes feeling open and connected to the other person.
23. Least favorite thing/part about sex—cleanup, setup, etc.
Her least favorite thing is scheduling. She likes things to be spontaneous, but she’s busy and she’s often drawn to busy people, so there ends up being more planning and less surprises.
24. A song they would fuck/get fucked to
Sultry beat, sensual vocals, spicy lyrics that are poetic and direct simultaneously. She’d be so into it!

I was explaining the plot of the MediEvil comic to a friend and they were getting so confused at my synopsis (since the comic involves time travel, multiple versions of the same character, and a body swap) that I drew a very helpful infographic in MSPaint to illustrate just how much Sir Daniel Fortesque - Dumbass Lord Supreme - has completely destroyed the space-time continuum with his actions.
If this looks confusing, congratulations! You found out one of the reasons why people don’t talk about the comic that often!
As a bonus, a short conversation of the logistics of the time loop

Round two: Haikea vs Sinaasapplesap
(poll at the end)
Haikea (Finnish)
[ˈhɑi̯keɑ]
Translation: A feeling of quiet, melancholic, sometimes even mournful longing. "Wistful" comes fairly close as a translation, though it's not exactly the same.
Finnish is an Uralic language belonging to the Finnic branch spoken by 5 300 000 people in Finland, where it is one of two national languages (the other is Swedish though it is less used, Finnish is the main language).
Motivation: It's one of the most beautiful words to say in Finnish, IMO; it has a beautiful flow to the vowels, and it almost sounds like a sigh. It's also an emotion often associated with a lot of Finnish art, literature, music and culture in general, and thus it's a strong part of Finnish identity.
Sinaasappelsap (Dutch)
[ˈsi.nɑ.zɑ.pəlˌsɑp]
Translation: Orange juice
Dutch is an Indo-European language belonging to the Germanic branch spoken by 16 million people in the Netherlands and 24 million total. Most speakers outside the Netherlands are from Belgium, which has a Dutch-speaking area with 7 600 000 speakers. It makes up one end of the West Germanic Dialect continuum. Dutch is also the basis for Afrikaans, spoken in South Africa.
Motivation: It's absolutely unhinged. There is no reason for it to have that many syllables for what it is. It also gets bonus points for being a very fun word to say. Go on and try it for yourself. You'll be repeating it to yourself all day.
Note: Sinaasappel is the word for orange and was originally Chinas-appel, literally China’s apple.

Random lore time:
So time, time travel, etc is a big piece in Tales of Arcadia and way back when I made some post referring to it.
Those post here and here.
Minor warning, I’ll be delving into some non-canon things and multiverse theory so if you’re adamant about keeping the fragile time space continuum of ToA intact, leave now.
This lore headcanon is just simply stating there are 4 main timelines:
Timeline A (Prime)
Our timeline, where everything from A to B happens (Trollhunters to RotT) with the potential added bonus of the books depending on your persuasion.
Now as everyone unfortunately remembers, Jim goes back in time to the beginning of his time as the Trollhunter and makes Toby the Trollhunter instead, shoving them into…
Timeline B
Trollhunter Toby.
Now this timeline can be split into two timelines as it was left unclear whether or not Jim still has the Magitech Amulet.
Timeline B1 says he doesn’t. Making Toby the official Trollhunter meaning events may occur differently
Timeline B2 says he does. Still making Jim a Trollhunter, but not of the current timeline (Like how Deya and Jim worked) meaning events will occur almost exactly the same.
In the case of Timeline B1, it could be theorized that the amulet has a small amount of sway over the new timeline (Jim upon leaving had intended on giving the amulet to Toby so the timeline was slightly altered in Toby’s favor, so things like school starting later, Toby being able to climb the rope, the amulet choosing him, etc.)
Now for the weird bits…
So as some of you may know, Tales of Arcadia released a game, Defenders of Arcadia.
It take place on Jim’s 17th birthday (roughly a year has passed from the events of Trollhunters and 3Below and Wizards presumably didn’t occur, so Jim never encountered the Green Knight, went back in time, became Beast Jim and Human again.) and Porgon attacks him, Claire, and Merlin, sending them back in time to Jim’s 16th birthday. So now Jim, Claire, and Merlin have to track Porgon down to fix the time mess and return to the correct time period.
Big issue is that the game has a lot of wild inconsistencies (probably cause of the time mess, who knows) but anyway, this leads to…
Timeline C
A timeline where the events of Wizards potentially never occurred.
Now this does not delete any of the Wizards characters from the universe exactly. (Well, maybe the Arcane Order, but…)
Things in this timeline are pretty vague as things such as whether or not they made it to Jersey’s Trollmarket, whether or not Jim ever actually got the armor of, and if Claire can do magic without the shadow staff are left in the air.
Now similar to Timeline A Jim, Timeline C Jim (with the addition of Claire and Merlin) are sent back to the early days of Jim’s Trollhunting career. Which then brings upon…
Timeline D
Everything up to “Bittersweet Sixteens” happens as it should except that possibly during it… this timeline’s Jim is possible fighting the Stalkling alone as this timelines Trollhunter team is in Trollmarket. (It could be assumed Timeline D Jim was aided by Timeline D Draal however as Draal is not present in Trollmarket)
This timeline also has the addition of a few weird elements such as:
Strickler is in Trollmarket
Dictatious is in Trollmarket, is not blind, and is not working for Gunmar
Angor is in Merlin’s tomb (Also unknown if Timeline D’s Merlin is awake)
Aja and Krel are on Earth
Morgana is free from the Heartstone
Also in this timeline, the Jims never meet. Additionally, this timeline is considered to be a sort of timeloop (Not sure how long it last, but apparently upon defeating Porgon, Merlin sends Jim C back to his timeline (C) to which he and Claire will forget everything that happened in Timeline D)
In conclusion, please leave your timeline alone, as you can see, there are 4-5 timelines with duplicate Jims running around so be careful.

Q-riosities!
Interesting stuff here.
In True Q, in scenes, such as where Q sees a shadow on the wall demanding a report from him regarding his progress with Amanda, as well as the scene when Q visits Amanda, but not before pressing the bell outside her quarters, Q is doing something odd.
--> Q is walking along the corridors among the crewmembers on the Enterprise as if he belonged there. Why would Q just be strolling around the corridors like that? He could use teleportation. Was he looking for something? 🤔
In Death Wish (VOY), Q tells Janeway that Starfleet bedsheets give him a rash.
-->Now, how would he know that? Makes me think of Tapestry. 🤔 The Qcard lover in me headcanons that Q did crawl into Picard's bed at least once while he was sleeping to observe him and be close to him. I shamelessly admit I love this notion. 😙
The Qcard Significance of Guinan's Words
In Q Who, before the crew finds out that Picard is no longer on the Enterprise, we see Guinan stop mid-conversation with a Ten Forward patron to gaze out the windows. She asks Riker if everything is okay, and says she has this feeling.
"I've had it a couple times before; it's probably nothing. Sorry I bothered you. Ten-Forward out." --Guinan
--> During those times Guinan had that particular "feeling", Q HAD to be in the vicinity of the Enterprise, or on it!
Furthermore, we know that it has been a long time since Guinan made the connection between that feeling and the presence of Q because she wasn't entirely sure it was him.
When Q and Picard return to Ten Forward in Q Who after Q's little excursion with Picard in the shuttlecraft, Guinan snarls at Q, " I knew it was you!"
During the other times Q was there, he was likely just observing humans--as in Picard to be more specific. Q was definitely interested in Picard and became obsessed after Picard had bested him in Encounter at Farpoint and in Hide n' Q.
🎉🎉BONUS!!! 🎉🎉
I wonder if Q was actually UNDER Picard's bed covers with him during those times when Guinan "felt this feeling a couple of times before" (or perhaps Q could've been there more often than that, but Guinan didn't sense him because she was asleep, for example) because when Q appears in bed with Picard those two times that we canonically know of, he is ON TOP of the covers, not under them! That could explain why Q complains in VOY that Starfleet bedsheets give him a rash, much to Janeway's inner disgust.
Now, he could've taken on a non-human form, such as a twinkling light or just becoming invisible, for instance, to be more stealthy and more comfortable under Picard's bed covers to do whatever it was he was doing. 😏😏😏 I'm happy to roll with that.
Who knows what Q is doing when we don't actually see him?
**Now, I concede that Q's presence on board the Enterprise when Guinan had that feeling could've been the presence of another Q, either passing by, or purposely visiting. But, given our favorite Q's predilection for obsessing over Picard, he is most likely the Q that registered on Guinan's vibe radar.
Plus, consider the fact that the ominous music that is being played during this very scene not only adds an aura of menace to the moment, but also strongly supports this idea that her "enemy" from two centuries ago is nearby and has been hanging around multiple times before. However, if Guinan can sense Q nearby, but Q and Picard are nowhere near the Enterprise, then Q's vibration, for lack of a better word, must be extremely far-reaching in space. Wow.
I'm curious if members of the Q Continuum each have their own "signature vibe" in the Universe, and that's why Guinan yelled at Q, "I knew it was you!"
I'd hate to think all the Qs had the same unpleasant effect on her.

Lingthusiasm Episode 73: The linguistic map is not the linguistic territory
Maps of languages of the world are fun to look at, but they’re also often suspiciously precise: a suspiciously round number of languages, like 7000, mapped to dots or coloured zones with suspiciously exact and un-overlapping locations. And yet, if you’ve ever eavesdropped on people on public transit, you know that any given location often plays host to many linguistic varieties at once.
In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about the complications that come with trying to map languages and dialects. We talk about the history of how people have tried to map out linguistic varieties, and how geopolitical factors like war, colonialism, migration, education, and nationalism influence which languages are considered to exist and where, in the context of Inuktitut, French, BANZSL (British, Australian, and New Zealand Sign Languages), and the Faroe Islands. We also talk about sprachbunds, aka how languages and dialects are more like gradients of colour rather than patchwork pieces.
This episode was updated with a corrected definition of sprachbund [14:54 - 16:08] on 23/10/2022.

Announcements:
November is our anniversary month and this year we’re celebrating 6 years of Lingthusiasm! We invite you to celebrate with us by sharing your favourite Lingthusiasm episode by sharing a link to your favourite episode, or just sharing your lingthusiasm. Most people still find podcasts through word of mouth, and lots of them don’t yet realise that they could have a fun linguistics chat in their ears every month (or eyes, all Lingthusiasm episodes have transcripts!). If you share Lingthusiasm on social media, tag us so we can reply, and if you share in private, we won’t know but you can feel a warm glow of satisfaction - or feel free to tell us about it on social media if you want to be thanked! We're also doing a listener survey for the first time! This is your chance to tell us about what you're enjoying about Lingthusiasm so far, and what else we could be doing in the future - and your chance to suggest topics! And we couldn’t resist the opportunity to add a few linguistic experiments in there as well, which we’ll be sharing the results of next year. We might even write up a paper about the survey one day, so we have ethics board approval from La Trobe University for this survey. Take the survey here! In this month’s bonus episode we interview Liz McCullough (no relation), of Lingthusiasm production manager fame, about linguistics and science communication. We talk about how Liz got interested in linguistics through science and music, her varied career path going back and forth between museums and universities, and how she's worked with us on the intersection between linguistics and science communication.

Idk if I talked about it already, but I had the thought of when Splendor teleports or - vroops - away somewhere, he leaves behind a circle of glitter. Where the glitter came from is a mystery, but I had the funny thought that some kid accidentally poured so much glitter on Splendorman one time that the literal space time continuum is infested with glitter. So now when he teleports, he leaves behind glitter.
A friend of mine has the added bonus of letting him leave behind a wrapped candy or something. Like a lil treat to congratulate you on dealing with 'em lol.

debatably cursed au
Okay okay okay. AU idea: bttf and annie (yes, the musical). Allow me to elaborate (sorry if it’s really incoherent, I’m quite sick-brained atm)
Marty is an orphan staying at Mr. Strickland’s Orphan House (basically Strickland is Miss. Hannigan)
He goes back in time to see his parents and meets Doc (Doc would be like Daddy Warbucks or whatever his name is)
and Marty screws with time continuum and his existence and Doc helps out (normal movie)
But when Marty goes back to his current timeline, Doc ends up adopting him because of how much they’ve gotten to know each other.
Bonus:
Marty meets Einstein the same way Annie meets Sandy. Do with this idea what you will. i dont even know how this idea came to me but it did

What My Tarot Deck Says About My Blorbo?
🤍Silver the Hedgehog🤍
Tumblr media
...
1st Card: Knight of Swords
Tumblr media
The Knight of Swords, like all the Knights, rides a horse in order to facilitate decisive movement. With the wispy snow in the artwork, it almost appears as this Knight is in the clouds, which is fitting, since the suit of Swords represents the element of Air. Swords are also the suit of the Mind and Thoughts. All of this reflects Silver perfectly- he uses his mental psychokinetic powers to float through the sky and keep up with speedsters like Sonic. Like a knight, Silver is on a mission. He is courageous, chivalrous, and has a strong sense of justice. He will not hesitate to save the ones he loves and defend the future from evil. That being said, look at how fast this Knight is moving, sword at the ready. This shows how Silver's righteous attitude can lead to impetuousness. He's quick to jump to conclusions and accuse others if he thinks they will get in the way of his mission. Many times he has hurt perfectly good people just because he's gotten the facts wrong. Nonetheless, he keeps moving forward and never gives up.
2nd Card: Temperance (Reversed)
Tumblr media
Like the Angels depicted on Temperance, Silver wants to find a way to restore balance. However, like this Reversed angel, his resources are desolate. The sand she pours represents the dark future he grew up in, and the water from the upright angel represents him going back in time to restore the world to how it should be. The swirling patterns on their dress represent the ripple effects of Silver's actions and his is confusion about his purpose. Even with the future saved, Silver keeps coming back to the past because he's become attached to it. He's not comfortable resting on his laurels, and would rather risk messing with the balance of reality itself than try to adapt to a new, unfamiliar life.
Conclusion:
Silver needs to be more careful, not just when he's saving the future but also when he's deciding how to live his life. He needs to temper that childish feistiness and vindictive justice of his before he jumps to conclusions on his missions. When things are peaceful, Silver should accept things as they are and stay in his own time, lest he unravel the entire space-time continuum with his shenanigans. He doesn't understand that his incredible power doesn't always need to be directed at something. Silver's more than just a hero without a cause, and he should come to terms with that.
...
Bonus:
The stone from my collection that makes me think of Silver most is--
Tumblr media
--this shiny green/cyan Resin gem!
...
Thank you for reading~ Information about my cards can be found in this post! A list of my favorite characters can be found here!

5 + 1 Fic Friday Roundup: Soulmates
Don't worry this isn't promoting any OTP as the only correct way. Rather have some fics set in universes where soulmates are recognizable (via mechanisms such being born with their name on your skin or sharing dreams or etc).
Summoning Soulmates (AO3) - "On the 18th birthday of the younger soulmate, you switch bodies. Normally it’s nothing too special. Usually something mundane, like grocery shopping or working a part time job. But with Jason and Danny, it’s anything but. Now Danny is scrambling to get his very human soulmate out of harms way in the Infinite Realms."
Continuum (AO3) - "Naruto being Naruto, drew up a wonky time-travel seal and sent Obito into a completely different dimension where people actually have soulmates. Wtf. Furthermore, although Obito should have been an anomaly, why was Senju Tobirama's name inked(?) just below his left collarbone?!"
every possible mistake (AO3) - "Hawks has never wanted a soulmate; Himiko has never wanted anything more. Dabi threw his soulmate away for revenge, and Denki just hopes no one finds out he doesn't have one."
if broken hearts were whole (AO3) - "At first Alec thought he didn’t have a soulmark. Not everyone did. Sometimes they disappeared, or changed, and sometimes they showed up later in life, signifying some twist of fate passed, some important choice resolved that you hadn’t even realized you’d made. But Alec doubted he’d be one of those, didn’t think he’d ever be able to want someone, be wanted back."
Cursed be this Soul (that Ties Us Together) (AO3 / FF) - "Across universes, Hermione meets her soulmate through time and space; the ties that bind them together could be the very thing they need or it could destroy them both. 20 years later, they reunite - but when you play the game of thrones, add magic and a young metamorphmagus, things are never as they seem in Westeros."
Bonus: Firstone (AO3) - "Even in a world designed for perfect matches, love was unfair."
