both Pete and Vegas have separation anxiety. for Vegas it's about the anxiety that Pete is going to leave and not come back and he gets really frustrated with himself about it because it's a problem and he needs to be chill about Pete going off to do other things that aren't just about him (tall order).

meanwhile, for Pete it's about Vegas dying when he's not looking. after all, he's already almost failed to keep him alive once and it would be too easy for him to actually fail at it a second time. if he's not looking at Vegas then Vegas is a little bit Schrodinger's Vegas.

anyway this means they're both very weird about it when they're not in the same place and get substantially more comfortable when they are. Vegas thinks that this is a problem more than Pete does; as far as Pete is concerned Vegas thinks a lot of things are a problem that don't have to be, but that's also Pete's coping mechanism and he'll be damned if anyone gets to take it away from him.

i found an article in japanese about this conference; it’s said to include “20 primary, middle and high school students”. it also describes the moment -- there’s a video of this meeting, but it’s over an hour long and i’m too lazy to find the exact moment, so i’ll just have to trust that the japanese article transcribed the thing correctly. i’ll try to roughly translate the bit below.

One male student had asked, “Mr Narita, you’ve often said “Old people, kill yourselves” during re:hack (the name of the meeting). I think it would be better if they left/departed (退散). And, theoretically, if one was to make a system where the elderly 自動でいなくなる (=die automatically/on their own=a gentler way of saying “commit suicide”, i assume), how would you do it? For example, with laws or something like that?”

To that, Mr Narita had said, “’How to do it’, well, I’m thinking it’s quite possible it’s how the future society will look like. There are movies that picture this sort of society, they’re a bit like SF movies. Everybody gets a timer placed in their arm when they’re born, and after a couple of decades, this timer activates and they automatically die. In this society, everyone is equal and has a set lifespan, and once the time comes, they die.”

Mr Narita then continues, bringing up another movie: “There’s another movie that shows another kind of society. It’s named Sommer-something and it’s about a mysterious fictional community. In this community, once a person reaches a certain age, they go up to the top of a cliff and jump off.“

After describing the two movies to the children, Mr Narita added, “It seems that settlements like this fictional community have existed in the past. So it is possible to imagine such a society, isn’t it? It’s difficult to say whether it’s a good or a bad thing. If you think it’s a good thing, I think you could work hard to create such a society.”

Mr Narita explained [after the student’s question] that “I didn’t tell the elderly to kill themselves, but I did say that seppuku is the quickest way to reform social security”. The student who asked the question regarding Mr Narita’s previous statements seemed somewhat confused. The movies Mr Narita used as an example were probably “In Time” and “Midsommar”. He introduced the works of fiction, but left it to the children to determine their moral value [lit. whether they’re good or bad]. (<-- this paragraph seems to be from another article)

idk what to say about this, tbh! i feel like if it was any other situation i’d probably have more of an opinion, but at this point “GRAPHICALLY! and IN FRONT OF CHILDREN!” is like. my least concern (although i’m not sure if what he said can be called ‘graphic’, i’d say ‘graphic’ is like, describing what happens to the body as it hits the ground, but idk!)

but also, yeah, it’s just “.....seriously guys” but people just Love to find the Bad Guys to point at, even if it makes them look absolutely ridiculous and pointlessly cruel in result. i bet if the article was from another perspective, one that sympathizes with the professor’s arguments and supports them, and listed all the ways in which the elderly are Bad (they might be landlords! they might be bigots! they might be cruel to their children/grandchildren! etc!), they’d be singing a totally different song. but this time it’s Actually This Whole Fields Of Study Produces Heartless Demons. 👍 aye bro

Xue Yang winds up at Song Lan's monastery shortly post finger crushing!

oooh this is an interesting one! I am sort of torn between this happening at a point where it's on purpose and xue yang is still close enough post-crushening to have some belief that somebody (in this case, a temple full of daoshi) will help him or if I want it to be long enough after that he's turned pretty well bitter on the idea of help from other people being a thing that exists, at least for him.

and since I can't make up my mind about it I'll have it "teetering on the edge between the two, maybe slanting a little toward the latter but desperate enough to try seeking out help from these people anyway"

(or it could be he ends up there because somebody brings him there, but I think I'm setting that one aside for this particular ask.)

song lan gets to experience the traumatic experience of proximity to a horrifying aftermath of a very nasty crush injury at a young age! this is probably formative - it's interesting to me thinking about the effects this might/could have on song lan, actually - while I don't think he's ever as rosy-viewed of the wider world as xiao xingchen is, I think being up-close witness to xue yang's specific story and its aftermath would render him a little more cynical than he is in canon.

I definitely like the idea of song lan growing up protective of his shidi as a result of, again, personally witnessing the gruesome aftermath of xue yang's trauma. xue yang enjoys this but also is merciless about needling song lan in general, because it's fun, but also that is his uptight shixiong and nobody else gets to mess with him.

I think being in a nurturing and protective environment that provides him with guard rails, expectations, and a life where his utility/livelihood isn't tied to violence goes a long way toward at least tempering xue yang's worst impulses. the impulses will still be there but having fewer reasons to act on them/forming better habits because of the expectations in place and the rewards of abiding by those expectations would make a substantial difference in the way xue yang moves through the world. it changes the calculus on how he sees other people/what he expects from them - even if the betrayal/hatred of chang ci'an is still very much there, it's tempered by the fact that he found someone to look after him.

when song lan decides to leave baixue xue yang goes with him, and please imagine the two of them as the weirdest pair of wandering cultivators solving peoples' problems that most people have or will ever meet.

when song lan encounters xiao xingchen they are still going to connect with each other on a profound level and xue yang is not going to be happy about it. very jealous, very possessive, immediately decides that xiao xingchen is stupid and annoying and not to be trusted.

It’s important to recognise that Barbie (2023) criticises both the patriarchy AND the matriarchy. Yes, the Ken’s are just accessories to the Barbies. Yes, they don’t have any say in the government they live under. That’s the point, you’re supposed to feel awful, you’re supposed to want the Kens to have their own agency, you’re supposed to want equality. The Barbie movie explicitly states that the way Barbie treats Ken is wrong, so much so that once he finds a safe space for his masculinity and individual identity he’s so excited to share it with the other Kens.

But they go overboard and replace a matriarchy with a patriarchy and now the same issue exists but in reverse. That’s the POINT!! THATS THE POINT!!! Barbie is not anti-men it’s pro equality PLEASE understand this

Due to the IMMENSE comments and discussion on this post (thanks ya’ll!!) I’ve decided to update my post with my recent opinions and hopefully clearer explanations!!

First, my original post only considers a very small and very vague analysis of the film!!

Since making this I've read all your comments and learned quite a bit about the matriarchy as it appears in human civilisation. Originally, I was pitting the patriarchy and the matriarchy against each other as though the results of their implementation were equal in the film.

They were not!! Below is the definition of matriarchy I’ll be working off of.

Matriarchy Simple Definition;

Matriarchy is a social system in which women hold the primary power positions in roles of authority. In a broader sense it can also extend to moral authority, social privilege and control of property.

There's a lot to talk about in the Barbie film that would fit better in an essay, so I'll try and condense it into this;

To me, Barbie (2023) is a film about the female experience and the shared connection between women that persists through childhood and adulthood, support and harassment, suffering and joy, mother and daughter.

It uses Barbie as its figurehead because of the immense societal and political impact the doll has had on women, both good and bad (as explained in the film).

The male experience as seen in Barbie (2023) is not the sole focus of the film- rather, it's an accessory (as the Kens are) to Barbie's story, and a necessary aspect of exploration to truly highlight the importance of individualism and healthy personal exploration.

I want to make clear that I in no way think the treatment of the Kens was just as bad as the treatment of the Barbies. I also still agree that the matriarchy fostered by the Barbies wasn’t good for the Kens.

Additionally, I’m aware that this take on Barbie (2023) works strictly within the assumed heteronormative boundaries of gender. There is a lot of nuance in the Barbie film and I don’t think everything can be covered or explained in on Tumblr post— but I hope this clarification helps!!

I hope you're all coming to your own conclusions and analysis of the film in a way that makes sense to you. And for those of you engaging in online conversations and discourse about it, I hope you're keeping yourself and others happy and safe!!!

Why should anyone vote in the presidential election when the electoral college decides the president? What's even the point of the popular vote in that instance? I don't see the purpose in voting in the presidential election because of 2016.

Your downballot votes always matter, full stop. The more local, the more your vote counts, and the more concretely the outcome will affect the lives of your friends and neighbors. Please, please don't let presidential despair turn you away from making real change where you live.

If you live in a contested state: the brokenness of the system gives your presidential outsized impact. Electors overwhelmingly cast their electoral votes for the winner of the popular vote in their state, all or nothing. That margin can be pretty damn thin.

If you don't: by a strict utilitarian argument, your single PRESIDENTIAL vote doesn't matter. California is gonna go blue whether or not I vote. Texas is gonna go red whether or not an individual there votes. If you favor a third party, you could reasonably decide to cast your vote for that party if your state's presidential outcome is a foregone conclusion.

I'm personally one of many who consider voting a civic duty, like paying taxes & showing up for jury duty. It's a right and a responsibility. There's a saying about how rights are like muscles - if you don't exercise them regularly, you will lose them.

There are years of momentum behind reform efforts to unfuck our electoral college. The more often the popular vote is misaligned with the electoral, the stronger the arguments for that unfucking become.

Relatedly, voter turnout has (in my experience) consistently been seen as a measure of voter engagement in public affairs. IE voter turnout in recent elections has been up because people care passionately about what's at stake, and that sends a message to politicians that we are (or are not) paying attention. Protesting, contacting your elected officials, etc do this too. Voting is one crucial piece of a bigger puzzle.

oh dear, now that's material for a loooooong conversation i'm not sure i'm qualified for, but like. i don't think lwj blames lxc for his punishment!

considering what the punishment is for, he kind of got off lightly; on top of that, lwj says in the banquet extra that "during the years i spent in seclusion, brother would always come visit me and talk to me sincerely", implying that now that the situation is reversed, he can't do the same. he has to feel at least a bit regretful/conflicted about that.

the thing that irks me is that... lxc is just a forever afterthought. this line i just quoted is from literally a three lines long post-coital conversation that happens and fizzes out quickly (wwx then doesn’t reply and they just go to sleep). another occasion lxc is mentioned in the extra is at the beginning of part 2, in which wgxn can’t try fucking while lwj’s doing handstands because “lwj has to visit his brother”. i know the book is about wgxn and the extras are even more so -- just a chance for the readers to bask in their adorable life together -- but from my pov (i don’t really care about wgxn’s adorable life together and i’m heartbroken about xiyao) it’s just... sad.

it’s been a while since i’ve read the chapters earlier than the one with the post-burial mounds lotus pier jgy haters conference, so i don’t remember all instances of the gusu twin jades interacting, but i can’t help but think that the whole jgy business kind of... changed it in a way that i’m not sure is salvageable. what i mean is that after lwj realized wwx is back, he sort of -- yeeted him on the very top of his priority list, and forgot everything and everyone else in the process, well, save for lsz because he’s wwx’s Kid Buddy From The Burial Mounds. he trusts and supports wwx completely, even if he has no real empirical reason for it -- wwx says jgy killed nmj, so jgy killed nmj, duh. the jades have their thing with silent communication, but i don’t remember lwj even showing that he’s in any way concerned with how lxc might feel about this.

in the guanyin temple as well -- i believe they do it out of concern for lxc, but i can’t help but feel bitter when wgxn tell lxc not to talk to jgy, not to believe him and so on, when they don’t want jgy to Tangle LXC In His Web Of Lies Again. i don’t know how to put it, but it’s like -- lxc isn’t a full person in this situation? they sort of assume he’s been tricked by jgy. they treat him almost like a child who doesn’t know better, when he says it himself that it’s not that he didn’t know jgy was up to No Good, he just trusted that he was doing it because he had no other choice. no thought is given to this revelation! jgy is bad, jgy is an excellent actor and a skilled manipulator, so it’s best to just not let him talk to lxc at all.

i think that at this point, lwj doesn’t understand lxc at all. i’m not sure whether he’s aware of this, so focused on wwx. probably not. but before he leaves, he doesn’t do anything to even show lxc... anything, really? i’ll be there for you, brother? i don’t understand, but i feel your pain? anything else, just anything! but there’s nothing. and by the time lxc is mentioned next time, it’s in the context of lwj not trying to help him because “it would be fruitless either way”. doesn’t that sound just fucking bleak.

because here, i feel, is the source of the problem, lxc’s crown of the most tragic elder sibling: his little brother doesn’t even know how to help him. there’s nothing he thinks he can do in this situation. does he even have anything to say about jgy, or his relationship with lxc? does he have anything to say about how his beloved helped bring him down? is he sorry about that, does he feel bad that lxc can’t or doesn’t want to face the world?

we do know, though, that at the end of the novel wangxian agree that they’ll tell lxc the truth -- the horrible truth that might make lxc, gasp! realize new things about his friend -- when he asks. which is honestly... well, i think you can guess how i feel about it.

it’s funny, though -- we talk a lot about the yunmeng bros’ reconciliation, is it possible or not, etc, etc, even though through jin ling all things are possible so jot it down. the fact that jl stubbornly points out that jc clearly wanted to say something to wwx -- this, i think, is a hint that they will eventually talk. or at least it would be in a world that i think would make sense; in a world where wwx has relationships other than lwj and the juniors. what should be debated more, i think, is the relationship between the lan brothers. the problem of lxc is often glossed over in fics; of course he leaves seclusion and attends wgxn’s wedding as their first and main shipper&supporter, and of course he finds peace, whatever the fuck it is. but does he really? i think lxc “finding peace” primarily should mean him figuring out what he wants as a person, individual, not “sect leader lan” or “lwj’s big brother”, but he, lan huan courtesy xichen. and i think that one of these things could be... understanding. and i don’t know if lwj can offer him that tbh

aaron bushnell knew exactly what he was doing. he states his intentions with total lucidity and sense of purpose. he knows what he's about to do is extreme--he says so. he speaks calmly, but he's clearly terrified. he takes a deep breath after pouring the accelerant over himself. he has to psyche himself up to light the flame. he struggles with the lighter. he says "free palestine" normally once before he starts to scream it. even through his agony he manages to say it one last time before he stops being able to speak at all. this is a man with total conviction. he wanted to help people, in any way possible. this action was a moral one, and any news outlet painting this as simply a mental health issue is a disservice to his memory. he knew what he was doing when he burned himself in uniform. he knew that there was a chance that sacrificing his own life could go on to save many others. this was the ultimate act of selflessness, and it should be treated as such. may he rest in peace.
