If y'all thought I forgot about Jeff in my, what I am now dubbing, Ride-or-Die AU where Gareth joined the end of the world party because he was worried about Eddie. You are dead wrong!
If you haven't read that little post here is it -> [ 🏎 or 💀 ]
Jeff comes a little later after Jared (the name I gave the other Hellfire member/who I imagine is Eddie's friend). He was also taken out of town by his mom and dad because they were worried for their son, not just because he was in "affiliation" with Eddie, but also because he is black and they knew there are some racist bastards in Hawkins who would have hurt their boy just for their prejudices and would have called it justice.
So Jeff comes back and of course Gareth, Jared, and Eddie tell him everything. Steve knows they did this, so does Robin because Steve tells her literally everything. Jeff just comes over to movie nights, pool parties, barbecues, etc. And like no one notices for a while until it's like a Party/Family dinner night and Hopper is looking out over his sea of children and thinks he mis-counts because hahahahahaha no. He did not have 15 kids. Unless Argyle was there but Hopper did not see any long ass hair and besides the boy would be sitting next to Jonathan.
He keeps looking over all the kids, he's squinting, he keeps getting 15 damn kids but that literally can't be right. Then he notices Jeff and is just like "WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?"
And Jeff the sweet angel is like: "Are you okay chief? It's me. Jeff? I uh, I brought the chocolate chip cookie blondies that my mom made to last weeks pool party at Steve's."
Eddie sighs dreamily: "Oh yeah those! Tell your mom I love her and would die for her."
Steve without looking up from twirling his spaghetti that he helped Joyce make: "He will not tell her that. Do you remember how she reacted to that last time? The poor lady looked like she was going to cry and said 'please don't die, my son needs friends.'"
Jeff flipping off Steve: "Did you have to quote my mom word for word jackass?"
Steve: "Look I can't remember all 50 states but my brain likes to dedicate conversations to memory."
Robin: "It's the former mean girls in him, I swear he's reformed it's just like his brain soaks up what it considers gossip so he has it for later."
Eddie: "GASP! Stevie Boy? A gossip? Say it ain't so?"
Steve: "Literally shut up."
Joyce a little reluctantly: "I mean...Steve, you did tell me you say Mrs Blake exiting Mr and Mrs Caldwell's house when you came to help make dinner. And in your words 'she was sneaking out but trying to play it off like she was meant to be there. There's no way she's not having an affair with Mr Caldwell."
Steve is just blushing while everyone laughs and Hopper is still sitting their confused off his damn ass because everyone is acting like this new kid was always here and Hopper knows! He knows he hasn't! So he just has to sit there and slowly accept he has a new kid to add to the list. It's 15 sometimes 16 when Argyle comes down and considering the boy mentioned property prices here in Hawkins being a steal after the whole "earthquakes/serial killer" thing, Hopper was just gonna have to keep the counter at 16.

Now that he knew he was alone, he couldn’t help but wince nor prevent the way his body leaned heavily upon the back of a pew and shaking arm was raised to clench his abdomen. When he had entered the church, he had seen a familiar face, an old woman who dutifully attended masses at least three times a week. He had always suspected it was more a social event for her by this point, a form of community, rather than religious fervor – confirmed by how she had lingered and chatted, saying she left behind a batch of cookies she made in the rectory for him to share with the nuns. Where Elias might manage to be a bit more cordial and pleasant in conversation, his replies were truncated, distracted, enough to signal that something was wrong. He normally loved chatting with strangers and semi-familiar faces alike, but his current asocial demeanor had chased her off. He’d have to make up for it later.
As he withdrew his hand and witnessed the dark stain of blood upon his palm, he began to head to the rectory himself to seek out his first aid kit, leaving behind droplets of blood upon stone and carpet. It was just a nasty slice upon his side, enough to cut through most layers of skin but nothing heinous, along with a bit of skin nearly ripped from his arm. Surface wounds, he had told himself, nothing compared to the emotional, mental, and spiritual damages inflicted upon the young man he had been working to cleanse and purify. That was when Father Caldwell realized his fatal mistake. He wasn’t alone. Where brown eyes were normally warm, they landed upon a certain Biblically-inspired individual who had been waiting, the priest’s gaze filled with a sort of panic. He was only human; this facade of stoicism was already out of his grasp, brow knitted at the stinging sensations.
“Eve...” he began, working to keep the strain from his tone, the groan of pain from being voiced. “D-did you need something? I’m afraid I’m a bit busy at the moment...”

The Winter Wish by Jennifer Bernard is available now!
Available on All Platforms
A Lake Bittersweet holiday novella
Lake Bittersweet is the perfect place for a winter wish to come true... Baking cookies, sledding, building snow forts…these are the things trauma nurse Annika Scarlett should be doing with her nephews as Christmas nears. Instead, she’s in a hospital, where doctors are trying to diagnose her mysterious collapse. This is not what she planned for her holiday season. She should be a little grateful...on one hand, the man’s she’s been crushing on via text came to her rescue and hasn’t left her side. But on the other? The man’s she’s been crushing on via text came to her rescue…and hasn’t left her side. It’s almost enough to make Annika believe in romance, except she’s far too independent for all that. For billionaire and single dad Brent Caldwell, it was love at first sight the minute Annika helped his young son through an ordeal. But does the love-skeptical Annika even believe in such a thing? All he wants for Christmas is for her to recover. Well, maybe a little more than that…or a lot more… Between storms, emergencies, and the ghosts of Christmas past, it’ll take a miracle for his wishes to come true. Good thing it’s that time of year.

Party Animal
Today I got to go on a great bike ride - found some new ways to get to the roads I used to ride in Caldwell and some hilly routes around some scenic hills and lakes. I was pretty toast by the time I made it home, a shadow of my former self. But the weather was perfect and the ride was beautiful, so no real complaints.
Once I got home there was a speed shower before heading over to Graham's cousin's house with a heated outdoor pool. Hannah jumped and splashed to her hearts content, played with their dog, and ate an amazing quantity of food. Back home for a nap and then out again to our old neighbor's house for a Memorial Day Party. Hannah ate a huge cookie after dinner so made it at the party until almost 9:30 (!) and was having a blast with the 3 and 5 year old boys who used to live across the street from us. It was fun to watch her in her element.
My notes for today- I need to figure out when to have caffeine when I do these long solo rides - with no guarantee of a pit stop, I can't leave the house with a stomach full of tea. I am also eagerly awaiting some special plant netting I ordered. I used bird netting on my blueberry plant and while Hannah was napping today, Graham and I spent 20 minutes rescuing a chipmunk who had completely entangled himself in the netting, so it seems the bird netting is a no-go.

Group Discussion: Eternally Yours
With Halloween just around the corner, we thought it would be a perfect time to dive into the paranormal romances of Eternally Yours edited by Patrice Caldwell. We fell into the stories and found much to love. I think we avoided any major spoilers so feel free to take a peek into our group discussion even if you haven’t had a chance to read yet. If you know the stories though, we’d enjoy hearing your thoughts.
Publisher summary: Vampires and merpeople, angels and demons—the paranormal is full of unusual beings. The stories in this anthology imagine worlds where the only thing more powerful than the supernatural, is love.
Contributors include: Kalynn Bayron (Cinderella Is Dead); Kendare Blake (Three Dark Crowns); Kat Cho (Wicked Fox); Melissa de la Cruz (Blue Bloods); Sarah Gailey (When We Were Magic); Hafsah Faizal(We Hunt the Flame); Chloe Gong (These Violent Delights); Alexis Henderson (The Year of the Witching); Adib Khorram (Darius the Great Is Not Okay); Anna-Marie McLemore (When the Moon Was Ours, The Mirror Season); Casey McQuiston (Red, White, and Royal Blue; One Last Stop); Sandhya Menon (When Dimple Met Rishi); Akshaya Raman (The Ivory Key); Marie Rutkoski (The Winner’s Curse); Julian Winters (Running With Lions; Right Where I Left You)
What are your impressions of the cover?
Audrey: I loved it! It’s beautifully macabre, and I especially enjoyed the detail of the blood dripping off of one of the roses. I knew exactly what kind of anthology I was going to get when I saw the cover.
Jessica: Oh, I’m such a fan. It really grabs you the moment you see it. I’m listening to Taylor Swift’s new album and Anti-Hero is playing right now – and it pairs really well with the cover!
Crystal: I really love the vivid colors and it’s such a great pairing with the romantic and the slightly creepy. It’s warm and chilling at the same time.
K. Imani: I absolutely love the cover. It’s completely romantic and gothic with such beautiful colors. It really sets the vibe of the anthology.
Which story or stories really grabbed you and lingered in your mind after reading?
Audrey: Such a difficult decision! There were so many good stories in this anthology. If forced to narrow down my favorites, I’d pick “Piano Sonata No. 13” by Kalynn Bayron, “Banes and Blessings” by Hafsah Faizal, and “Bride-Heart” by Marie Rutkoski. (I do enjoy a story with a solid body count! And each of these had some lovely but horrifying details/descriptions that stuck with me.)
Jessica: Same, Audrey. It’s so hard to choose; they were all so paranormally delightful! I’ll echo Audrey on saying that “Banes and Blessings” was a favorite of mine, too. I also really loved La Bruja y la Sirena by Anna-Marie McLemore – such gorgeous writing. And of course, I have to include a shoutout to A Thousand More by Chloe Gong which was just so much fun. It’s the kind of story I want to see adapted as a C-Drama.
Crystal: I totally agree, it is difficult to choose. I too have “Banes and Blessings” in my top picks though and the piano story was quite memorable. Being a children’s librarian, the title “If You Give an Asura a Cookie” stood out to me and the story wasn’t as creepy as others, but it was a sweet one and I enjoyed that.
K. Imani: I knew this question was going to be asked so I kept a small tally as I read, lol. I really did enjoy all the stories but like Audrey, “Piano Sonata No. 13” was perfect as it was a romantic villain origin story and I was there for it. “Kiss the Boy” by Adib Khorram had me smiling the whole time, and “My Demon Prince Charming,” by Sandhya Menon was so wonderfully romantic. And Jessica, I agree that “A Thousand More” by Chloe Gong needs to be a C-Drama. I would love to see all the different lives of Tally and Nate.
Stories like these really make me think about questions involving monsters. What are monsters and or how can we determine if someone is truly a monster? Were any questions like this bouncing around in your mind while reading?
Audrey: As you can tell from my favorites list, one of the ideas I found myself circling was violence and how it can be used to blur the lines between “monsters” and “good people.” Sometimes the violence feels entirely justified, sometimes it feels good in the abstract, and sometimes it’s the byproduct of some other outcome you want.
Crystal: The question of monsters is an interesting one to me. So many times we are judging whether someone or something is a monster on looks or even actions, but we don’t always know the motivations. I think the determination can be better made when you know the “why”, but that’s the trickiest part to discover or understand. We default to appearances because that’s the simple path.
Jessica: Monsters often embody the “Other,” which is why I think so many people connect with monster stories that are nuanced or sympathetic to them and depict monsters with a dimension of humanity. (And as seen in Scooby-Doo, the real ‘monster’ in stories can be the human, whose monstrous behavior outstrips a real ‘monster.’ Sorry, yes, I had to bring up Scooby Doo.) Monsters often reflect cultural fears, desires, and violations of conventional (white, straight) norms. And that’s something that many people from marginalized backgrounds can connect with. The letter to the reader from anthology editor Patrice Caldwell speaks to the appeal of monsters so well and also points to an IRL issue – that of publishing declaring paranormal romance “dead,” ignoring the BIPOC and queer paranormal romance authors who were already writing in the space or who aspire to write in that space.
K. Imani: One of the aspects I liked about some of these stories is of demons and other monsters falling in love too. Monsters are often depicted as soulless evil drones, but in reality “monsters” are just people with bad intentions. They live and love like the rest of us, so it was nice to see our so-called “evil’ monsters “humanized” in a way. And like Crystal said we often don’t know the motivation of others so often when we think of monsters doing evil things, they are often just trying to survive. Stories of “monsters” falling in love helps us see them in a different light. It was one of the reasons why I love “If You Give an Asura a Cookie” because the story really showed how “monsters” are just trying to survive in a human populated world, and deserve happiness too.
Did you meet any new authors that made you want to find more of their writing?
Audrey: Kalynn Bayron was a new-to-me author, and I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of her work.
Crystal: Akshaya Raman made me want to follow up and find more of her work. Fortunately, there is a book in existence already, The Ivory Key, so I have something to look forward to sometime soon.
Jessica: I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve had Alexis Henderson’s much-lauded The Year of the Witching on my TBR pile for a long time, but haven’t gotten around to reading it. Reading “In the Eyes of Angels” was the push I needed to pick up The Year of the Witching finally – and I’m so glad I did!
K. Imani: Like Crystal, Akshaya Raman stood out to me too. Now that I know she wrote “The Ivory Key”, a book that has been on my list, I can’t wait to dig into her novel.
Since we’re on the topic of paranormal love, have you read any novels with that topic that you would recommend?
Audrey: The first thing that jumped to mind for me was CEMETERY BOYS by Aiden Thomas, which features a brujo falling for the ghost he accidentally summoned. I’ve also loved every one of Anna-Marie McLemore’s books that I’ve read, so check those out if you’d like some magical realism with your romance.
Crystal: I too loved Cemetery Boys and Anna-Marie McLemore’s books. I would also add Cynthia Leitich-Smith’s Feral Nights or her Tantalize series.
Jessica: Echoing Audrey and Crystal – Cemetery Boys and anything by Anna-Marie McLemore is a must-read. I would also include the YA graphic novel Mooncakes by by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu, which is queer and lighthearted and fabulous.
K. Imani: Oh, where to begin as paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres! Renee Ahdieh’s quartet “The Beautiful” is on its third book and is a wonderful gothic-ish series set in New Orleans in the 1870’s. If you want more Merfolk, Natasha Bowen’s “Skin of the Sea” duology is a treat. The sequel “Soul of the Deep” just came out a few weeks ago.
This was a fun read and discussion and we’d recommend it for anyone with an interest in paranormal love stories and those with an interest in the monstrous. Thanks for joining us!

His First Lady Chapter Three
Summary: Natalie and James Caldwell are high school sweethearts who share twin boys. James always knew he wanted to be president and Natalie was ok with that. Sadly, Nat would find out that James cheated on her and was not so fond of living this American dream anymore, but knew that she couldn’t leave him till after his presidency. It wouldn't be too bad though, because she would meet the Secretary of State, Benjamin Adler, and would start an all-right affair that would soon turn into something more.
It’s a story about love, death, infidelity, politics, and family.
CHAPTER THREE
I avoided him and everyone else for the next two days. Or the best I could. The trip involved putting my best face forward and looking pretty. I can’t wait to go back home.
November 4, 1993,
One day until election night.
James was so excited. I believe he’ll win. Part of me wants him to become president. Maybe the trip in October solidified that. James asked me to plan an election night party. I planned out what I was going to cook and what I needed from the grocery store. I left the house and was met with my neighbor standing outside my door.
“Hi, Natalie. I want to give you this”, she hands me a container filled with all different kinds of cookies. “As a thank you for what your husband will do for our country”, she said with a big smile on her face.  I didn’t know what to say. I smiled, said thank you, and walked to my car after putting the cookies in the kitchen.
The grocery store was jam-packed. I never shopped so fast in my life. It wasn’t this packed four years ago. I came back home and put the groceries away and started to cook things that I couldn’t do tomorrow. If all things go well, according to my husband, I won’t have to cook meals for 1,462 days. After dinner, James came to bed and we shared a talk.
“One more sleep till our lives change forever. Natalie, I’ll finally be doing what I always wanted to do”, James said.
“ I am happy for you, but what if it doesn’t happen? What will happen to you, then?” I had to be honest. Would we get a divorce, due to his infidelity? He also doesn’t know that I know, I hope. Would he fall into a rabbit hole that he could never crawl out of? I need to put my feelings aside for him. Even if he doesn’t deserve it. I fell asleep terrified at how different tomorrow will be.
