Short Bio: The current young master of the Kikuchi ninja clan. Quite the strong and snarky kunoichi towards others but she doesn't fully mean it. Out of the 3 siblings she had the hardest time growing up as often was ignored being the 3rd born of the master at the time. She's always had to prove herself to the point she expects you to do the same as she did. Quick to get upset at others even jokingly mocking her and known to precisely throw small kunai or daggers at people getting them stuck or just to scare them.
Tumblr media
picrew only for ref
Was belittled and bullied by boys so much as a child has made her get upset instantly towards most men/masculine types who brag about how strong, cool,or good they are. She has to knock them down a peg or she won't feel right. It's a trauma trigger basically. Not all men trigger this through some; she sees them as a joke so it doesn't bother her. Likes Mokochiba quite a bit but leaves it as like a fleeting crush and more wishes to learn from him skills she doesn't know yet.

Saiki K Christmas Headcanons
Tumblr media
Kusuo Saiki
☆ as usual, Saiki will pretend not to care about the holidays at all
☆ yet despite “not caring,” he still ends up celebrating with you at a Christmas party
☆ for the most part, he’s in the corner drinking hot chocolate and watching everyone celebrate
☆ but when you guys put on a movie (and everyone shuts up lmao) he actually gets really invested
☆ i feel like he probably loves Christmas movies because they’re dumb and somewhat unpredictable, and there are so many of them so he won’t get spoilers
☆ he won’t admit this if you ask
☆ you don’t expect him to get you a gift, but despite everything he says, he really cares about you
☆ you don’t know how it gets there, but on Christmas day you find a present with your name on it under your tree
☆ he didn’t put his name on it, but it’s definitely from Saiki
☆ and it isn’t fancy or extravagant but it’s thoughtful and kind of perfect
☆ (you thank him with coffee jelly later)
Tumblr media
Kaidou Shun
☆ he thinks about what he’s going to get you a long time before Christmas
☆ he wants it to be completely perfect so you know just how he feels about you
☆ (ask him though and he’ll say something about how Christmas is “just for mere mortals” or how he’s celebrating it to uphold his human identity lmao)
☆ the gift he gets you is thoughtful, but his Christmas card is what stands out
☆ Kaidou really has a way with words, and he pours his heart into it
☆ when you thank him he’ll get really flustered, but he’s overjoyed that it made you happy
☆ (i also feel like he really loves Christmas songs, but he tries to keep it a secret because it’s not “cool“ or whatever. but one day you catch him belting out Mariah Carey and he gets so embarrassed ajsfsjdkjdsf)
Tumblr media
Nendou Riki
☆ honestly i feel like Nendou gives really weird gifts 😭
☆ but it’s really the thought that counts, right?
☆ he’s a good cook, so i also like to imagine that he bakes Christmas cookies during the holidays
Tumblr media
Kuboyasu Aren
☆ i feel like Christmas probably wasn’t a big thing when Aren was in his gang
☆ so he’s really excited to celebrate it with all his new friends
☆ he’ll entertain you and anything you want to do with him
☆ it’s not that he’s disinterested, it’s just that seeing you happy is what he appreciates most
☆ when it comes to his gift, he doesn’t want to disappoint you
☆ he knows that you’ll be appreciative about anything, but he wants it to express everything he feels about you, as he isn’t the best with words
☆ (considering how he acts in the episode where he gets the confession, it’s clear he takes his relationships really seriously)
☆ i feel like he’s the type of person to get you something you mentioned wanting offhand once
☆ something you wouldn’t have expected him to remember or notice in the first place
☆ of course, you love it and that makes him feel so proud of himself
Tumblr media
Teruhashi Kokomi
☆ Teruhashi would give you exactly the right gift
☆ basically just what’s expected of her (she is the perfect pretty girl after all)
☆ she stops by your house to drop it off, but she ends up roped into some activity because of course your family loves her
☆ but she’s secretly really happy about it because she wanted to spend time with you
☆ she catches you under the mistletoe multiple times just by sheer luck
Tumblr media
Yumehara Chiyo
☆ i feel like Yumehara loves the whole Christmas season and the romance of it
☆ she definitely watches a lot of cheesy Christmas romcoms
☆ she makes you a really lovely card and a thoughtfully made gift
☆ she also tries to strategically place mistletoe for you to “accidently” find yourselves under
Tumblr media
Aiura Mikoto
☆ of course, Aiura always makes it known how much she loves and cares about you
☆ Christmas is no exception
☆ i feel like she goes all out for these kind of things
☆along with a main present she gets you little stocking stuffers
☆ little keychains or lip gloss if you wear makeup
☆ and she definitely gets all her friends little good luck charms, probably based of your zodiacs or something
☆ she won’t let you say that it’s too much
☆ "don’t worry about it, i get tons of cash from fortune telling anyway!”
☆ she also definitely loves singing Christmas songs with you
Tumblr media
Mera Chisato
☆ she’s really poor, so she can’t get you anything extravagant
☆ her favorite part of Christmas is obviously the food
☆ she works extra shifts to get gifts for her siblings and one for you
☆ she’s worried that it’s too small, but you love it
Tumblr media
Saiko Metori
☆ Saiko has probably been giving you things all season
☆ like a twelve days of Christmas kind of thing
☆ he doesn’t take no for an answer when you tell him it’s too much
☆ (but he pretends he’s only doing to flex, despite not getting anything for anyone else)
☆ on Christmas day, you think that he’s probably lonely in his big house with only his body guards to keep him company
☆ so you suggest that he spends Christmas with you
☆ of course, because he’s still kind of a jerk, he’s like
☆ “why would I want to spend Christmas with you instead of in my huge mansion with all my presents and money?”
☆ “Christmas isn’t all about presents and money. it’s about spending time with the people you love”
☆ he kind of short circuits when you say that, because he can’t believe you love him or that it’s separate from his money
☆ so he spends Christmas at your house
☆ it’s one of the best he’s had in a long time
Tumblr media
A/N: Merry Christmas everyone!
I know it’s technically not Christmas anymore (it’s just past 12am where I am), but I really wanted to post this. Thankfully I’m finally free from the shackles of school (at least for a bit), so hopefully i can write a lot more (i’d love to hear any requests you have). if you don’t celebrate, i hope you had a great day anyway <3

Cookie for your thoughts: how would you sort the characters from Hannibal (TV) and The Magnus Archives?
I don't know The Magnus Archives, and I don't plan on finding out what it is. If someone else likes it, feel free to take this one. Hannibal, though, Hannibal I can do. If anyone does not know what the sorting hat chat system is, here are the basics.
Dr. Hannibal Lecter: I don't think there is any doubt about Hannibal's secondary. He lies, cheats, manipulates, and gaslights to his heart's content. He is charming, cheeky, and improvises fast in a crisis: weapons, stories, phone calls, you name it. He has fooled everyone around him for years, and he is so used to landing on his feet in whatever situation that by this point, he just does whatever he feels like. He has no plans at all, he just follows his whims wherever they take him. He is an exploded and extremely cynical snake secondary, or Driftwood Slytherin.
I think he has a neat bird secondary model that helps him plan and execute his murders with meticulous precision, and also lets him keep odds and ends from his murders that might come in handy later (think fishing lures).
His snake primary burned to a crisp, presumably with Misha's death, and only unburns a little bit with Murasaki's hedonism therapy. And yes, I'm drawing on the movies here, because we only get told a few things about Hannibal's time with Murasaki and Chiyo, and that does not contradict what we know from the movies. He has a circle for people who are necessary, like Bedelia, Alana and Jack, and one for people who have killed, or are otherwise interesting (Abigail, Margot, Bedelia, Will). But these circles are outer circles at best; the only one in his inner circle is himself. And I think he surprises himself most of all when at the end of season two, one other person has snuck in there: Will Graham.
Will Graham: Sorting Will is difficult; not only is he neurodivergent, he also suffers from trauma 90% of the show, a neurological condition 30% of the show, and undergoes a remodeling process courtesy of Hannibal in the rest. The only thing we have to go on is his behaviour in the first few episodes, before Hannibal gets his claws into him.
Based on that, I'd say Will is a universal badger primary that is alright with having a community of dogs instead of people. He has the badger tendency to kill himself for complete strangers (e.g. go back into the field to save lifes even though it destroys him), and he depends on Jack and Hannibal and Alana to keep him stable and tell him who he is, which makes him even more susceptible to Hannibal's manipulations.
Hannibal isolates Will completely, to the point of getting him incarcerated while everyone thinks he is insane. He undermines Will's belief in himself, and his belief in other people because they all gave up on him, even Alana. Or in other words: Hannibal systematically burns Will's primary, and he goes one step further and burns Will's sense of self as well. The only thing left in Will Graham at this point is revenge.
And then Hannibal swoops in and gives Will his life back. Literally. But he has made everything Will is about him, he twists Will's universal badger into a perveted snake that's all about him. It's fascinating to watch.
Will's secondary is difficult to tell. He is blunt like a lion might be, but I think that's more neurodivergence than anything else. His way to solve problems is usually to talk to Hannibal about it. And I think the impulse is genuine, at least at first. That's why I tentatively would say he is a badger secondary who burned long before the show started. He doesn't trust people in the beginning, but he wants to. This is why it's so devastating when he starts to trust Hannibal in their discussions about his issues and his other cases. He basically starts to unburn his secondary.
And when Hannibal betrays him, when he burns Will's primary, he also burns and twists Will's secondary. Because in prison, Will is forced to rely on a snake secondary skillset: lies and manipulation. And when he gets out, he uses his new model to get his revenge. Their talks after that are verbal battles, with Will playing both Hannibal and Jack. He gets lost in his snake because it's the only way to get a twisted form of their former companionship, the thing he actually wants.
I think in the end, snake wins, and we have a rare case of someone changing secondaries. Because especially in the last few episodes of the show, after Will and Hannibal get back together, Will seems to have accepted his snake secondary. Presumably, he has a different face for his wife and child than he does for Jack, and another one for Alana, and another one for Hannibal, and all of them include subtle variations in his presentation as well as what he says. He is calm, collected, and he sees the beauty in the Dragon's death, just like Hannibal.
And because he is finally at peace, finally himself again, a version of himself made in Hannibal's image, he crashes both of them over the cliff. He knows what they would do if he doesn't. It's his universal badgers final and defiant triumph, and it's glorious.
Hannibal Lecter: double snake with burned primary and exploded secondary, bird secondary model
Will Graham: double badger with burned secondary, both get twisted into snake throughout the show but he only accepts the snake secondary and makes it his own while ultimately rejecting the twisted snake primary version
I'll sort the others in a different post, this one is long enough^^

@pridewon said, “ How does your muse handle emotions? what does it take to get your muse to cry? what are they like when they’re angry? ( for chiyo if you want to be selective, otherwise, for all of them :)) ! ) ”           from: character questions
Tumblr media
chiyo:       it kind of varies how chiyo handles her emotions. she’s pretty self-aware and understands herself well, so there are times where she’s able to work through things on her own and keep her emotions in check. she isn’t the type to overreact -- it’d take something pretty horrible to get her to blow up -- but she’s more the type to underreact. or at least you think she is because she just hates troubling others with her feelings ( cue her cracking jokes to brush off concern!! ) . because of this, though!! chiyo will bottle things up to the point where she does have a meltdown, so usually when she cries, it’s a culmination of many instances where chiyo ignored how she felt.       when chiyo’s mad, the change in her demeanor is kinda?? shocking because she becomes very cold, very critical, and very unforgiving. but just when she’s really mad! like you’ve either hurt her or someone else and now she has zero mercy or tolerance. she doesn’t get mad like that often, and most people won’t ever see her like that.
yu:      yu wears his heart on his sleeve. :’ ) you can almost always tell how he’s feeling because he really just can’t hide it. his emotions pretty much dictate his actions, which means he’ll act first and think about it after the fact often  ( i.e. feeling stressed, he might lash out and apologize afterwards ). despite being ruled by his emotions, yu is a pretty sturdy person emotionally as he’s had a long time to reflect and accept his situation as a deity who probably?? lives forever, so i don’t see him crying very often. i think it’d take something pretty heavy to make him cry, such as the death of a loved one.      when yu is mad, he doesn’t listen. you can’t have a conversation with him right then and there because his anger clouds his judgement. you have to let him cool down first. i won’t say he necessarily overreacts, but his temper isn’t the best.
maemi:      oh, maemi... she’s a mess, my friend!! doesn’t handle her emotions well at all. i mean, she let her pain and rage turn her into a murderer so : ) she’s the worst out of all my oc’s when it comes to managing her emotions. she pushes away guilt and any thoughts that might jeopardize her goals, buries them as well as she can, and focuses solely on the hurt, resentment, and cynicism she feels towards this society that worships its heroes. she doesn’t let herself be sad, or at least not for long. maemi pushes herself to be angry above all else and holds onto it. she cried for her sister when she died, but she hasn’t cried since and likely will only cry when really pushed to the brink or faced with the death of someone else she cares for.       her anger is sharp like a knife, a weapon more than an emotion, or it’s a fire that consumes her and everyone around her. what you see depends on how you interact with her -- push her buttons, criticize her actions enough, hit a little too close to home with her, and her carefully constructed villain persona will crack to reveal a girl like a wounded animal.
chinatsu:       chinatsu is a tough cookie. she’s very level-headed, though sometimes to the point of coming off as though she doesn’t care. and tbh sometimes she doesn’t! rip the people who get mad at her bc she’s just like?? you done?? but the truth is chinatsu cares very deeply for those around her and would be a blubbering mess if something were to happen to them, especially if she could have protected them. she used to cry a lot thinking about the kids who she couldn’t save when she escaped from the caretaker. more than likely, though, you won’t get a visible rise out of chinatsu if you try to provoke her whether trying to hurt her or anger her.       chinatsu’s anger is quiet but burning. you’ll feel it even if she isn’t shouting, and if you’re an opponent who’s made her mad?? watch her take extra pleasure in taking you down : )
arata:      arata is emotional and open about it! yeah, he might put up a front depending on the person, but arata doesn’t believe in keeping your feelings to yourself. it doesn’t make any sense to him -- how is anyone supposed to understand or help you if you keep your emotions all bottled up? so he handles his emotions as well as he can, being entirely honest about them and accepting help from others ( usually that means akane or the rest of the band ) . when he cries, it’s usually in a moment of weakness, like when he was struggling with his sense of purpose because akane no longer needed him to protect her. or! you’ll catch him crying during moments of victory because you bet he’s a blubbering mess when stand out! gets signed to a label!!       mad arata is loud and tends to think he has to be right, but he’ll listen to your point of view. he’s very much the sort of person who tries to understand others’ thoughts.
akane:      akane, like her brother, is a pretty emotional individual, but she tries to hide it more. she also believes in being pretty open with your feelings and will gladly speak her mind; akane hates for anyone to see her feeling down, though. for such a long time, akane was known to be a crybaby who needed someone to look after her, so now she prefers to be the one looking after people. she doesn’t want anyone to view her as weak and will often save any tears for a private moment. she’s become quite skilled at putting a brave face on! akane mainly cries when she’s really stressed and things aren’t turning out how she needs them to, or when someone else is crying first. she’s an empathetic crier :’ )      when akane is mad, she’s loud just like arata, but she’s less likely to listen to the other person’s side in the moment. she has “ i’m always right and everyone else is always wrong ” syndrome unfortunately, so it takes her longer to come around.

Dungeons and Dragons Headcanons
Okay... I got super into DND recently, thank my darling friends for that. I've made my first character and currently am playing my first campaign! Bunch of shit has happened.
But anyway, I was sort of thinking about some DND headcanons for the animes I write for!
I couldn't think of anything for Kakegurui. They love their games but DND isn't really about gambling, even if you need a lot of luck for it.
So, here! I'm writing for two per fandom...
I'll be writing about one player and the DM!
~ Dari
Tumblr media
BNHA
Bakugo Katsuki
a long suffering DM of which players consist of: Yuga, Mina, Denki, Hanta, and Fumikage
hosts DND in the common room, schedules it only after checking everyone has time and is pretty flexible with times
passion he carries goes into the dramatic and well-detailed scenes he creates
he is so good at setting the mood and riling up the characters his players act as, it's ridiculous, but really it's just him going in depth to analyze the characters they play
actually very creative, making things and pieces specifically for the campaign
also a little shit and likes throwing them into random situations where they have to survive, always keeps them on their toes
gives everyone in the room anxiety by just saying, "roll a perception/luck check"
his vocal range is surprisingly vast too, his entire disposition just shifts whenever he's doing a different character and you can always tell which reoccurring one he's acting as
current favorite character is a lawful good tiefling fighter that may or may not be the son of the King of the Underworld and a cocky, nearly sadistic, chaotic neutral human rogue that works as an assassin (Okamoto Nobuhiko's other roles, cookies for the ones that can guess which two)
gets frustrated easily though and his players do not help at all; "NO, YOU CAN'T ROLL FOR THE NPC'S BOOB SIZE!" (another guess as to who he's talking to)
Tokoyami Fumikage
his character is just like him in a way, being a lawful good warlock Aarakocra
okay, he is SO fuckin' extra and his penchant for poetry and theatrics really helps him here
his descriptions could be as vivid as Bakugo's if he allowed them to be, but mostly wants to leave to up to the imagination
his character is mysterious and how he acts and speaks his so cryptic
he and Bakugo actually work together to make worlds and create stories, weaving reveals and learning of each other's secrets in the best way
ridiculously lucky rolls almost all of the time, his dice aren't loaded as he's rolled with others' dice to get the same result
it'd be frustrating if it wasn't so cute seeing him light up the slightest bit at an especially high roll
when people ask him how he manages to get so many high rolls, he just bluntly says that he prays to the gods
which he definitely was, to Bishamonten, one of the seven gods of luck; specifically the god of fortune in war and battles (he's also associated with dignity)
I'd like to think he is himself is a bit of a patron to the moon god Tsukuyomi so he likely prays to him as well
Real Quick, What the Others Are:
Aoyama Yuga - lawful good cleric high elf, also a noble
Ashido Mina - chaotic neutral monk tiefling
Kaminari Denki - neutral good bard half-elf
Sero Hanta - chaotic good rogue human, Pirate King!!
Saiki K
Kaido Shun
plays a chaotic good sorcerer high elf with a penchant for long, winding story lines with complicated and often cliche sort of execution
but he's so enthusiastic and passionate about playing that it's hard to get angry with him
his DND group consists of their DM Kusuo, and the players; himself, Aren, Riki, Metori, Kokomi, and Chiyo (Hairo's just not into it)
has really low rolls in some stats but proudly totes around his highest strength and HP, his lowest rolls are his charisma though despite his modifiers
he manages to still pull through though?? Somehow??
his highest modifiers though are for "stealth" and "perception" since he's one of the few that thought through what he needed the most
gets good luck charms to get higher rolls and often prays to Greek gods for luck
each of his dice sets are pretty edgy and nice looking, even taking up on making them not only as gifts for his friends but as a sort of
his monologues, though a little lengthy, they're full of emotion and he acts incredibly well
not good at making split second decisions and that's often detrimental to him and his not so good saving throws
Saiki Kusuo
the very self-serving DM, that realizes that if he sets a time once a week for them to hang out that he doesn't have to deal with them for the rest of it
the best person to have as the DM, ngl, as he keeps order and people on track while encouraging banter and dramatic scenes between characters
won't admit it but he's always looking forward to sessions since well... they're all hanging out under his own terms and if he reschedules, they don't force him outside
uses his powers to make the entire thing more realistic and immersive
including making images of their characters/NPCs and cloaking it as their own imaginations conjuring the mirages
has extensive knowledge of everything and will tell you facts without looking at the books
even occasionally helping his players with rolls(via psychokinesis) and such if they're in a tight spot
can be absolutely merciless when it comes to things like them doing ridiculous things and not allowing them to have extra rolls when he's already given them pity ones
hates that Kokomi has high rolls on everything because that means she's shamelessly flirting with all the NPCs he has to play and he has to respond
favorite NPC to play is himself: a bored, very annoyed god that wants nothing more than to observe
What the Others Are:
Kuboyasu Aren - chaotic good barbarian tiefling
Nendo Riki - neutral good ranger orc
Saiko Metori - chaotic neutral paladin triton
Teruhashi Kokomi - lawful good wizard high elf
Yumehara Chiyo - neutral good monk half-elf

新年快樂! Happy New Year!
I know we’re a little late, but we thought we’d help you celebrate the lunar new year with some queer-themed zodiac content. Find out which queer person from history shares your zodiac sign, and follow the links to learn more with our podcast. Welcome to the Year of the Rat!
Year of the Rat (1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020)
Jazz-age heiress Henrietta Bingham was known for being the life of the party, including baking her friends themed birthday cakes, and one memorable occasion when she’d played the saxophone while standing on top of a piano. Her lovers included world number one tennis player Helen Jacobs, as well as members of the famously queer Bloomsbury Group: artists Dora Carrington and Stephen Tomlin.
Year of the Ox (1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009)
Vaslav Nijinsky was considered both the best and most controversial ballet dancer of the early 20th century. He shocked audiences with his skin-tight costumes, and the scandalous themes of his choreography, including depicting masturbation on stage, and had relationships with both men and women.
Year of the Tiger (1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010)
Known as the godmother of rock and roll, Rosetta Tharpe’s fame brought the music of her black, working-class gospel church to the world. Her sound - especially her distinctive guitar-playing - was a pioneering influence on men like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Berry. Rosetta never spoke publicly about her sexuality, but friends say she was attracted to both women and men.
Year of the Rabbit (1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011)

Year of the Dragon (1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012)
Andrew George Scott, alias Captain Moonlite, was at various times a preacher, a cotton farmer, a campaigner for improved prison conditions, and a bushranger. He is buried in Gundagai, Australia, alongside his partner James Nesbitt, with whom he was, in his words “united by every tie which could bind human friendship …one in hopes, one in heart and soul…”
Year of the Snake (1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013)
Mary Shelley is best known as the author of Frankenstein, which she wrote when she was just 19, pioneering the genre of science fiction. Mary described herself as “apt to get tousy-mousy for women” - in particular, her best friend Jane Williams. As well as being queer herself, Mary also supported other queer people, helping her friend Doddy, who was assigned female at birth, leave England and start a new life as a married man in France.
Year of the Horse (1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002)
Harry Allen was the subject of sensationalist newspaper articles through the Pacific Midwest in the early 20th century - partly because he was transgender, and partly because of his tendency to bite cops.
Year of the Sheep (1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015)
Yoshiya Nobuko was an incredibly successful Japanese author, famous for her stories focussing on relationships between women - both friendships and romances. Nobuko lived for almost 50 years with her partner, Monma Chiyo. In 1957, Nobuko formally adopted Chiyo, because, as she explained “.. the law will not recognize you as a wife. … I aim to get the law reformed.”
Year of the Monkey (1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016)
Drag king Stormé DeLarverie was considered the mother of New York’s queer community for many decades. Armed with a pistol, she worked as a bouncer at lesbian bars around New York into her 80s, as well as using her talent as a singer to raise money for people living with HIV/AIDS, and women and children suffering domestic violence. Stormé was with her partner Diana for 26 years, and after Diana’s death, carried her photo in her wallet for the rest of her life.
Year of the Rooster (1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017)
In 1970, drag queen and activist Marsha P. Johnson founded STAR - the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries - which aimed to provide food, housing, legal aid, and other necessities to homeless trans youth. Year of the Dog (1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018)
Freddie Mercury joined the band Smile - already featuring Brian May and Roger Taylor - in 1970. Over the next three years, Smile became Queen, releasing their first album in 1973, and with Bohemian Rhapsody reaching number one on UK charts two years later. Freddie lived for the last six years of his life with his partner, Jim Hutton, before dying from AIDS-related complications. He also lived with a huge number of cats, and he would phone home to talk with them when he was on tour.
Year of the Pig (1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019)
19th-century landowner Anne Lister’s diaries chronicle her many lesbian relationships, from 1806 until her death in 1840. The more explicit parts are written in code, with entries often beginning with a summary of her sexual activity from the night before. For the last six years of her life, Anne lived with her wife Ann Walker, with the two women exchanging rings and taking Communion at church together to represent their marriage.

@gsnkweek for today’s prompt of Costumes
Title: Granting Wishes
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Chiyo/Nozaki, slight Hori/Kashima
Archive of Our Own
--------------------------------------------------------
Chiyo’s glee meter went back up from its new lows. Blushing Nozaki! This was totally worth it!
Chiyo clapped along with the audience, staying hidden behind the backstage curtains.
“Looks like everyone liked it,” Chiyo murmured privately.
Hori gave a nod as Kashima and the other actors bowed. “Yeah, sometimes nothing beats a good retelling of a classic fairytale. Thanks again for helping with the set pieces.”
Chiyo smiled. “No problem,” she returned, glancing back to the backgrounds she'd had to repaint at the last minutes, and hoping no one had noticed that some trees were still a little wet. “It’s not my best work though, I hope it’s alright.”
Hori sighed. “Considering we only had a few hours before the play started I'd say you did just fine.” His eye twitched. “I keep telling Kashima not to bring her fans during rehearsals. I should start charging them whenever they damage the scenery during their fights.”
Chiyo forced out a quiet laugh. If you did that the club would have the funding to license a broadway musical.
Hori sighed as the curtain fell. “Anyway, are you busy tomorrow?”
Chiyo frowned. “Uh, I don't think so.  Why?”
“We thought it might be fun to host a costumed afterparty,” Hori explained. “We’re just going to use spare outfits from our storage.”
“Oh that sounds fun,” Chiyo replied, “but I’m not part of the drama club.”
“Considering how many times you’ve helped out us we consider you an honorary member at this point,” Hori replied as they watched Kashima flounce off stage, swiftly becoming surrounded by fans.
“Oh, okay,” Chiyo said, feeling touched.  After a moment she frowned. “I wonder who I should dress up as, though.”
Hori smirked. “Why not Cinderella?”
Chiyo blinked. “Um...I guess?” Seems cute, if oddly specific.
Hori leaned in closer. “Recently, we got our hands on a prince costume that’s a bit oversized for any of our actors, but would be perfect for Nozaki to wear.”
Chiyo froze. Slowly her glee meter rose from moderate to off the charts. “You mean Nozaki would be a prince?!”
Hori nodded. “I figured that if we talk him into going you two could be a pair.”
“Yes, yes, yes,” Chiyo cheered as she bounced up and down. “Hori you’re the best!”
Hori chuckled. “Thanks, but to be fair it was Kashima’s idea.”
“I’ll make sure to thank her too later,” Chiyo replied as she clasped her hands together and tried to picture her ‘prince’ dressed as an actual prince.
----------------------------------------------
The next day, Chiyo was beaming as she arrived at the party and twirled in her Cinderella gown.
Kashima spotted her and gave a thumbs up. “You look great, Chiyo!”
Chiyo smiled. “Thanks,” she said and looked her over. “You’re not a prince for once?”
Kashima adjusted her cowboy hat. “I get to be a prince all the time, it seemed like a good idea to be something different.” She twirled her fake gun. “Besides, think of all the hearts I can round up this way.”
Chiyo glanced over and spotted the girls in the corner who were already fanning over Kashima’s new look.
“You’re not wrong,” Chiyo said.
Kashima patted her shoulder. “I need to go speak to Hori, I spotted an adorable saloon girl outfit.” She waved and walked away and winked. “Have fun.”
Chiyo happily giggled. “I will!”
Chiyo then hovered near the refreshment table and did her best to restrain her excitement. Nozaki dressed as a prince! I’m not sure how my heart will take it. It will just be like a fairytale.
“Hey, Chiyo,” said a voice from behind her.
Chiyo would recognize Nozaki’s voice anywhere. She smiled, took a deep breath and turned fully expecting to see a dashing Nozaki.
She was greeted by Nozaki wearing a loose purple hooded robe, with a large purple ribbon on the collar. He waved the star tipped wand in his hand.
“Bibbidi bobbidi boo.  But wait, this party already turned nice, huh?” he greeted in his usual deadtone.
Chiyo’s jaw dropped. “W..what are you supposed to be?”
“The fairy godmother,” Nozaki said as he tugged at the robe. “I hoped it was obvious.”
“But why?” Chiyo said, trying not to wail. “Hori said you were going to be a prince.”
“Oh, that,” Nozaki said and shrugged. “He did show me the costume and I considered it but then I saw this.” He beamed and waved the wand. “It’s very comfy and I need reference photos of a person wearing a robe anyway. I’m doing a school play for the next chapter.”
“Oh, I see,” Chiyo replied in a deadpan tone. She glanced at Kashima and Hori, who was dressed as a pirate.
They both looked equally stunned as Chiyo and could do nothing but respond in a mutual shrug.
Thank you for trying, Chiyo thought.
Nozaki looked her over. “You’re Cinderella, right?” He gave a smile. “Guess that means we go together.”
Chiyo sighed and then pulled herself together. “You know what, I’ll take it.”
Nozaki raised an eyebrow, but Chiyo ignored it and poured herself a drink from the punch bowl. “Do you want a drink too?”
“Sounds good,” he said. “You do look nice.”
Chiyo snagged a cookie to go with the punch. “Thanks, and you look cute as a fairy godmother.”
To her utter delight, Nozaki blushed. “Oh, uh thank you.”

THE  THIRD  KAZEKAGE:
Aka,  a  huge  political  fuck  you.
This  is  what  the  third  was  in  my  hc &   its  truly  the  motivation  for  why  Sasori  did  what  he  did.  My  interpretation  was  not  that  Sasori  had  some  strong  personal  connection  to  the  Third,  as  unpopular  as  a  thought  as  that  may  be,  mostly  because  he  is  literally  one  of  the  most  unimportant  “important”  characters  I’ve  ever  seen  in  anything.  He  exists  pretty  much  to  be  Sasori’s  toughest  puppet &  thats  it  &  I  really  don’t  see  anything  else  than  that  for  so  many  reasons,  so  rather,  the  Kazekage  in  my  headcanon  is  yeah,  more  rather  to  the  opposite  of  some  important  factor  in  Sasori’s  life. The  big  thing  about  the  Third  was  what  he  represented  to  Sunagakure.  The  third  symbolised  to  Suna  hope,  protection &  stability.  Sasori  is  an  incredibly  vengeful &  vindictive  character  in  his  own  right,  the  scorpion  itself  traditionally  symbolises  vengeance.  Sasori’s  motivation  in  killing  the third  was  literally  to  strike  back  at  a  village  he  believe  wronged  him  in  a  very  meaningful  way.  He  took  away  their  hope,  he  took  away  their  protection,  he  threw  them  into  chaos  just  as  he  felt  they  had  done  to  him.
Further  he  saw  the  third  Kazekage  as  heavily  responsible  in  the  outlawing  his  life’s  work,  later  to  become  his  “art”,  he  looked  upon  the  third  as  a  representation  of  the  system  he  came  to  know  as  flawed  &  selfish  &  that  had  betrayed  him.  The  third  Kazekage  sat  at  the  head &  was  the  “face”  of  the  council  of  Sunagakure,  corrupt &  callous  as  he  discovered  it  to  be.  He  believed  entirely  that  it  was  a  poetic  end  for  the  biggest  puppet  of  them  all  to  indeed  truly  become  a  puppet.  He  found  it  poetic  that  Suna  for  all  its  inflated  pride,  built  off  the  backs  of  Shinobi  like  himself,  never  know  what  happen  to  him,  that  they  never  have  any  real  closure,  that  they  feel  absolutely  abandoned  &  betrayed  in  their  time  of  need  the  same  way  Sasori  did  because  of  them.  He  wanted  them  to  feel  small &  venerable.
Sasori’s  motivation  was  strictly  revenge  orientated.  Despite  his  budding  'insanity’,  Sasori  was  a  literal  child,  an  extremely  depressed,  extremely traumatised  child, albeit  an  insurmountably  dangerous one.  He  was  only  15  at  the  absolute  most  when  he  pulled  off  this  plan  in  its  entirety.  He  only  knew  the  third  through  the  eyes  &  mind  of  a  child  with  the  third  being  a  completely  grown  adult  man.  A  man  who  Sasori  didn’t  even  take  on  as  a  true  superior  given  his  own  incredible  ability.  Kazekage  in  general  was  not  something  Sasori  looked  up  to  all  that  much,  he  had  his  idols  &   his  own  path  pretty  obviously  chosen  for  himself   from  a  young  age.
Which  brings  me  to  GRANNY  CHIYO:   Chiyo  was  Sasori’s  only  teacher,  only  master  &  till  the  day  of  his  death  she  was  the  only  person  in  the  entire  sand  village  Sasori  regarded  with  any  respect  even  if  it  may  have  seemed  otherwise  in  their   reunion.  Sasori’s  relationship  with  Chiyo  is  far  more  complex  than  hatred.  In  fact  I  don’t  believe  Sasori  really  hates  her  at  all  but  he  does  harbour  a  feeling  of  hurt &  neglect.  Their  relationship  is  very  compound  given  Chiyo  wasn’t  just  Sasori’s  master  or  superior,  she  was  his  grandmother  &  his  soul  carer  from  the  age  of  5.  Chiyo  herself  was  never  the  grandma  who  knits  you  a  sweater  &  bakes  cookies.  She  was  an  iron  woman,  an  insanely  skilled  &  accomplished  warrior  in  her  own  right.  She  was  proud  &  very  firm.
Going  from  the  overflowing  warmth  of  his  parents  to  the  much  more emotionally  distant  Chiyo  was  a  rather  difficult  transition  for  Sasori  &  perhaps  one  that  he  never  fully  made.  Chiyo  loved  Sasori  very  much,  she  cared  for  him  very  deeply  but  Chiyo’s  reserved  nature  made  Sasori  feel  constantly  anxious  around  his  grandma  as  well  as  uncertain  of  her  feelings  toward  him.  Given  Chiyo  was  Sasori’s  master  as  well  as  grandma  there  was  times  when  she  had  to  be  harsh  with  him  during  his  training.  I  believe  Chiyo  was  harsh  on  Sasori  during  his  training  in  particular  because  she  wanted  to  ensure  he  was  the  strongest  he  could  be,  not  being  able  to  bare  the  idea  of  losing  him  the  way  she  lost  his  father.  I  believe  one  of  the  conditions  of  Chiyo  training  Sasori  to  be  a  shinobi  was  that  she  get  to  do  so  personally  so  she  took  care  of  all  of   that  kind  of  thing  when  it  came  to  Sasori.  He  still  participated  in  the  Ninja  Academy  &  their  Chinin  exams  but  Sasori  did  have  Chiyo  a  personal,  specialised  teacher  the  entire  time.
He  was  praised  during  his  training  just  as  he  was  scolded  at  times  when  failing  but  outside  of  this  Chiyo  was  her  usual  aloof &  sometimes  secretive  self  which  left  Sasori  confused.  Between  them  there  was  frequently  an  emotional  disconnect.  Sasori  rapidly  became  a  force  to  be  reckoned  with &  became  more  &  more  dominated  by  his  work  with  his  puppets  which  left  Chiyo  feeling  as  confused  about  Sasori  as  he  felt  about  her,  as  well  as  becoming  deeply  concerned  about  Sasori’s  mental  health  that  she  would  assure  herself  was  just  her  being  silly  because  as  hard  as  Sasori  worked  &  as  much  as  he  did  Sasori  always  seemed  to  be  doing  exactly  what  he  wanted &  she  felt  she  should  have  simply  been  proud  of  him.
Regardless,  Chiyo  didn’t  show  her  love  for  Sasori  in  traditional  ways  as  much  as  she  should  but  she  did  show  it  frequently  in  others,  though  these  were  ways  Sasori  either  missed  or  again  was  unsure  what  to  think  of.  For  example  Chiyo  spoiled  Sasori  in  some  aspects &  gave  him  privileges  that  others  might  not  have.  She  entrusted  him  to  use  the  puppet  workshop  as  he  pleased  &  trusted  him  to  put  together  deadly  poisons  which  she  personally  saw  authorised  through  her  position  on  the  council.
Not  to  mention  Sasori  carried  around  the  heavy  knowledge  that  his  grandmother  had  lied  to  him  about  his  parents.  When  this  finally  came  up  between  them  it  caused  an  even  greater  rift  to  form.  After  the  fight  Sasori  retreated  to  live  out  of  the  puppet  workshop  &  Chiyo  allowed  him  the  “Space”  he  seemed  to  want.  His  best  friend  Komushi  often  relayed  messages  from  him  to  Chiyo  &  vice  versa  as  Sasori  was  too  nervous  &  stubborn  to  speak  to  her  again  &  likewise  with  Chiyo  with  him.  It  was  tragic  however  because  though  Sasori  isolated  himself  what  he  really  needed  was  companionship &  no  one  saw  that  until  it  was  far  too  late,  nor  did  anyone  notice  Sasori  suffering  all  too  much  because  of  his  naturally  silent  &  reclusive  nature.
When  Komushi  died  that  was  the  final  break  in  their  relationship.  Though  Chiyo  did  her  best  to  protect  Sasori  regardless  it  became  too  much &  eventually  she  had  to  side  with  the council  on  outlawing  the  thing  he  had  fallen  into  such  an  obsession with.
I  think  its  important   to  note  that  Sasori  still  turned  all  of  his  fury  toward  the  village  itself  &  not  Chiyo  personally  which  to  me  indicates  that  despite  that  he  didn’t  hate  her. Despite  the  trash  talking  during  their  battle  it  was  not  a  battle  Sasori  ever  wanted  to  have.

Butterfly [1]
summary The end/the beginning
“Okay, okay, everyone quiet, please,” Tsunade called, clapping her hands together once. People settled into their chairs. Some placing their folders on their desks. Others tucking their phones into their pockets.
“I know everyone is anxious to prep for the day, so I’ll keep this meeting short.”
“Thank God,” muttered Asuma, leaning back in his seat. A few people chuckled, including the principal.
“First of all, I want to welcome everyone back. I hope that you had a chance to relax and recharge over spring vacation. It’s a brand new school year, so I hope you’ll go into it with open minds and high expectations,” Tsunade said, like she did every year. A few people nodded.
“On a sad note, Chiyo-sensei has injured her hip and will not be able to join us this semester. She’s on bed rest to recover from her surgery,” Tsunade then added. A murmur rippled around the room. Chiyo had been at the school for longer than anybody.  Although stern-faced, she always had words of wisdom to offer. Sort of like a terrifying grandmother to all the faculty.
“We’ve hired a replacement, though. I’m sure some of you will be familiar with her already.”
As if on cue, a head popped in through the door.
“Konchiwa!” she chirruped. flashing a grin.
Asuma jumped to his feet, nearly knocking his chair over.
“Ah! You!” he exclaimed, pointing. She danced into the room, reaching across the desk to bump her fist against his. They slapped their palms together. Gripping them tight for a moment.
“Sarutobi-sensei!” she said, releasing his hand.
“Haruno-kun! Wait, no. You got married, right? What’s your name now?” he asked.
Still smiling, she held up her left hand to reveal a bare ring finger.
“Just Haruno again. I got divorced last month!” she announced in the same cheerful tone.
Absolute silence answered her. Anxious eyes darting around as people tried to think of what to say. But she solved the problem by laughing.
“Anyway, I’ll be the new school librarian starting today,” Sakura declared. Teeth gleaming bright as she flashed another smile.
After Tsunade wrapped up the meeting, normally, the teachers gathered up their things. Some went to make copies before classes started. Others went to make coffee or put their lunches away in the fridge in the small kitchen tucked into the back of the staff room.
But today, everyone crowded around the new hire. Although, it was hard to call her “new” when most of them knew her quite well.
“Can’t believe you’re the replacement!” laughed Kurenai, clapping Sakura on the shoulder.
“That’s right, I was watching your interview on the television the other day. Is it true that you’re retiring?” Shizune asked.
“Alright, you’re smothering her. Give her some space,” grumbled Asuma, swatting his clipboard around. Fist on his hip, he glared around at his coworkers.
“We’ll go out for drinks tonight and you can pester her then,” he added.
“Bleh. You’re no fun, Sarutobi-sensei,” one of the teachers complained.
“Don’t make me blow my whistle at you,” Asuma threatened. It dangled around his neck from a red lanyard. And it didn’t take long for the rest of the teachers to disperse, finally getting started with their prep for the day.
Kurenai lingered, leaning against the desk. “We’ll do all the catching up tonight. For now, focus on getting settled in. Do you need help getting to the library?” she said.
Sakura shook her head. “I still remember.” Sakura tapped her temple.
“Alright. Let me know if you have any questions,” Kurenai told her. Patting the top of the desk twice.
The library was on the second floor of the school. It was at the far end of the hallway, right next to the home economics room. She remembered spending her free periods studying there, the smell of fresh cookies spilling over from the class next door.
She slid the white door open. It was empty, just as she had expected. It was too early for most students to even think about being in here. Sakura stood in the doorway, admiring the lines of shelves. There were rectangular wooden tables in the middle of the room. Matching chairs pushed in underneath them.
There was a counter by the entrance. She remembered passing her books to Chiyo-sensei over it, waiting for her to stamp the white card inside. The smell of ink clinging to the cover as she shut the book. She also recalled the Chiyo-sensei had kept an orchid on the corner of the desk. A little pop of purple in the room otherwise filled with different shades of brown.
Sakura set her bag down on the desk, flicking on all the lights. She moved to the windows. She opened up all the blinds, let the sunlight stream in. And she stood, admiring the view. Her hands on her hips, she watched the schoolyard. Students were beginning to trickle in. Some walking their bikes, others strolling through the gates with their friends.
She inhaled deep through her nose. Exhaled just as slowly.
It felt strange to be home after so long.
The gold medal was a nice weight around her neck. Sakura wore it for all the interviews and press conferences. It gleamed in all the photos, catching all the light. She smiled until her cheeks hurt. Fielding all the questions from the reporters waving their hands around. The nonstop click of the cameras almost sounded like applause everywhere she went.
“Sakura, you broke your personal best today. How does that make you feel?”
“Grateful. I feel like all the support and love I’ve received helped me get to this point,” she responded.
“Is there anyone specific you’d like to thank?”
“My coach, of course, who’s taught me everything. And my fans for always supporting me,” Sakura said. As if she hadn’t answered that one hundreds of times before.
“Sakura, what’re your plans for next year? There are rumors that you’ll be participating in the World Figure Skating Championships coming up next month.”
And Sakura paused at that. The cameras flashing made colors dance in front of her eyes. She blinked the strange shapes away.
“I won’t. This is my last competition. I’m officially retiring,” she stated.
A gasp rippled through the crowd. More flashes exploding in her vision. Hands flailing around harder to get her attention. And she could feel her coach gaping at her. Sakura stood.
“Thank you all for your questions,” she said, effectively ending the press conference. Offering one last smile and wave, she stepped off the stage. ignoring the way her coach shouted her name as she walked away.
Konoha was a city built defying common sense. Or at least, that was what Sakura had always thought biking up the side of a hill of a mountain to school each day. The ride down was much smoother. And while a lot of her classmates walked their bikes up, taking their time, Sakura was too stubborn to admit defeat. She huffed and puffed her way up each day. Sweat dripping down the back of her neck first thing in the morning. Legs growing stronger with the effort.
She remembered dashing from school as soon as the afternoon clean-up ended. Wheels of her bike spinning in mad circles as she rolled down the side of the hill. Rushing to get to the rink at the bottom of the mountain, or the studio the next town over. Her duffle bag banging against her spine as she ran up and down winding steps.
With the cherry blossoms tumbling off the trees with each gust of wind, Sakura couldn’t help but remember those days. Her ponytail whipping out behind her as she dashed madly towards a goal she couldn’t yet see.
Tsunade introduced Sakura as the new librarian during the opening ceremony. For students in the small town, the arrival of a new teacher sent a ripple of excitement through the students. But it was amplified when the students recognized her name and her pink hair. She could see them murmuring, whispering behind their hands. Eyes darting to her, bright with excitement.
After the assembly ended, Sakura found herself back in the library. In that quiet. And after years of being surrounded by noise on all sides, it was actually kind of nice.
She perused the catalogue and double-checked that the shelves in the library were properly labeled. She even ventured into the dusty back room. Opening up boxes, she found some novels that hadn’t yet been labelled and sorted. She browsed through them, crunching through a handful of cashews with her free hand as she skimmed.
The silence didn’t last for long, though. Students began to trickle in, often in giggling clusters. They whispered as they watched her from behind shelves.
Sakura pretended not to notice them as she thumbed through an old reference book. It had some good information, but it was a little outdated. Which was to be expected in a rural school like this, she supposed. She scribbled this down onto her notepad before she moved on through the inventory.
After a while, one of the students come forward with a book. Hugging it to her chest. Sakura held her hand out for it without looking up. Sakura wrote down the title and number of the book in her log. Pencil scratching across the page. She stamped the card in the inside cover.
“Make sure you return this in two weeks,” Sakura said, handing the book back over the counter.
“Um... Haruno-sensei, could I get a photo with you, please?” the girl requested. And it was only then that Sakura lifted her head.
She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
“Why? I’m just a librarian,” Sakura asked.
The girl squeaked out an apology. She hurried off to join her friends. And they left the library, whispering angrily to each other.
When Sakura wandered into the faculty room around noon, she found Asuma waving his arms around as he told a story.
“And so I say, ‘Akimichi, why are you eating chips on the track?’ and he goes, ‘Because I haven’t had lunch yet, Sensei’,” Asuma concluded. A few of the other teachers chuckled. When Sakura slid the door shut, they looked up at her.
“Ah. Come over here, Haruno-kun. Say hello,” Asuma said, gesturing for her. Sakura’s face lit up as she walked over.
“Hatake-sensei,” she greeted him. Kakashi shook her hand, eyes crinkling as he smiled.
“Haruno-kun. Glad to see you haven’t forgotten your old homeroom teacher,” he replied.
"I'm guessing I didn't see you in the morning because you overslept? Or you were on the roof smoking?" she conjectured. Kakashi rubbed the back of his head, eyes crinkling again.
"Both. Fell asleep on the roof. The weather's so nice, lately," he confessed. And then his eyes popped open. He pointed his thumb in the direction of the man sitting beside him.
"Ah, Haruno-kun, this is Rock Lee-sensei. He's a brand new hire this year, so you wouldn't know him," Kakashi said.
And Lee couldn't even speak at first. His eyes practically sparkling as he stared up at her. Clasping his hands together, he fidgeted, looking a little like he might burst.
"It's a pleasure to meet you!" he finally blurted out, turning a few heads with the declaration. Sakura nodded, shaking his hand.
"What do you teach?" she asked.
"English!" Lee exclaimed. He still seemed to be having trouble adjusting the volume of his voice. Sakura smiled.
"I lived in America for a couple years. Maybe you can help me brush up on my skills so I don't get too rusty," she suggested. When she laughed, Lee did too. His nervous giggles too high-pitched to be natural. Asuma shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers.
The door slid open again and a few people walked in. The man at the front sighed, rolling his shoulders.
"Man, I'm beat. I hate the first few weeks with the 1st years. You have to treat them like they're babies," griped Shikamaru. He tossed his clipboard on his desk. But then he spotted Sakura, and his expression shifted. He walked over, hand held out. Instead of shaking it, Sakura slapped her open palm against his twice before they hit the backs of their hands together.
"Hey. Good to see you, Haruno," he said, grinning.
"Yeah. Good to see you too, Nara. Still can't believe you of all people became a teacher here. You were always griping about how you couldn't wait to leave," Sakura remarked, hand on her hip. Sighing, Shikamaru looked up at the ceiling.
"I can't believe it either," he griped.
They chatted for the rest of lunch break. Kurenai and some of the others joined them. Laughter filling the room as they revisited the old days. Asuma discovering Shikamaru taking a nap in the gym. The time Sakura scaled the side of the building on a dare.
"Remember that time you lifted someone over your head? That was scary," Shikamaru recalled.
"Ah, come on. He was sooo annoying," Sakura added. Kakashi shook his head.
"You guys were such a rowdy homeroom. You gave me so many grey hairs," he complained.
"Hatake-sensei, your hair has always been that color," pointed out Kurenai. They all burst into laughter at that.
After lunch, they all went their separate ways again. Sakura discovered a stack of biology textbooks hidden in the back of the book closet. She rubbed the dust off one of the covers and flipped through. They only looked to be a few years old. Gathering them up in her arms, she headed out of the library, down to the lab. Thankfully, there was no class inside when she peered through the window.
Sakura wedged her elbow into the crack in the door. Shoving it open. She stepped sideways into the lab to avoid smashing the books against the doorframe.
"Excuse me. Sensei?" she called out.
There was a light on in the tiny adjoined office. It flickered off. And then an older man in a white coat stepped through the door. His eyes widened. He rushed forward to take the books from her. Easing them onto the counter.
"Orochimaru-sensei, sorry to barge in like this," Sakura said. Orochimaru removed his reading glasses. He hadn't needed those the last time she had seen him. His expression warmed as he took her in.
"It's not a problem. How can I help you, Haruno-kun? Or, sorry. Haruno-sensei," Orochimaru corrected himself.
"I found these in storage in the library. I was thinking maybe you could use them," Sakura explained, placing her hand on the stack.
Orochimaru peered down at the pile, blinking.
"Well, I'm very thankful for this, but you should have sent some students. You carried these heavy things down the hall all by yourself?" he queried. Sakura smiled.
"I also wanted an excuse to come visit. Sarutobi-sensei wants to drag everyone to a drinking party after work. You're coming, right?"
When he pursed his lips, she already knew his answer. That didn't mean she was going to accept it.
"Please, Orochimaru-sensei. Don't you want to hear about all the cool stuff I've been doing?" she wheedled. Orochimaru's lips twisted.
"I don't know. I'm not a big fan of social gatherings," he hedged. He rubbed his hands together.
"I'll show you my training videos. Even the ones from when I was in Saint Petersburg," Sakura offered. Orochimaru's gaze sharpened. He stared her directly in the eyes.
"Even ones you haven’t posted to your Instagram?" he demanded. And Sakura laughed. She had won.
"You really are obsessed. Yeah, Sensei. Those too," she answered.
When the last bell rang and students filed out of the building, most of the teachers stayed put. There were clubs and activities to advise and paperwork to complete. Some holed up in the faculty room to grade as the sky began to darken.
Sakura lingered in the library, hands on her hips. Shikamaru tilted his head to one side. A book held against his hip.
"I mean, I don't think it's against school rules. I'd double check with the principal, though," he mused. Sakura tilted her head too. Crossing her arms across her chest. She nodded.
The door burst open. Asuma poked his head in, grinning.
"Come on, you two. Time to go!" he called.
"That old man's as annoying as ever," grumbled Shikamaru as they followed him into the hall.
In a town as small as Konoha, there weren't many places to choose from in terms of post-work drinks. There was a bar by the one and only train station, or another bar near the doctor's office. The one near the train station was a little nicer, however, and it seemed that the principal was in a generous mood.
The owner ushered them into the private room in the back. They settled around the low wooden tables. Purses and jackets went in neat piles against the walls.
Sakura made sure to sit next to Orochimaru, who still looked wary about the whole affair. On her other side sat Shikamaru.
Tsunade kept her speech short as she welcomed Sakura to the staff. Making a few jokes here and there that the older teachers laughed at. There were some new faces that Sakura wasn't familiar with. They introduced themselves, and Sakura forgot their names almost immediately. And there wasn't enough time to feel bad about this as food and snacks arrived.
Sakura unlocked her phone and scrolled through her old videos. She opened up the folder that read 'St. Petersburg Training'. Orochimaru leaned closer to get a better look. He pulled out his glasses, perching them on the end of his nose.
Tsunade laughed. “I still can’t get used to those. Orochimaru-sensei, you look like an old man.”
Orochimaru stared at her over his glasses before he replied, “Allow me to gently remind you that you’re a year older than me, Kouchou.” But Tsunade continued to laugh, raising a glass to herself in a toast.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m not a day over 40,” she proclaimed. Laughter exploded from her end of the table at that.
Sighing, Orochimaru looked back down at Sakura’s phone. He fixed his glasses again. When Sakura hit play, Shikamaru heard the music and leaned in to watch too.
Sakura’s long ponytail whipped out behind her as she glided around the rink. She gathered momentum and speed, eyes narrowed as she concentrated.
Her left foot slid back. She pushed off, launching into the air. She spun around three times. But when she landed on her left foot, it buckled. She tumbled, hitting the ice hard. Shikamaru and Orochimaru winced in unison. In the video, a man skated over from the opposite end of the rink, chuckling as he helped her to her feet.
In the video, Sakura was laughing too as she stood. Brushing ice off the back of her leggings.
“Stop laughing and show me how to do it again,” she complained.
“You really suck at this. Maybe we should take a break?” he suggested, his back blocking out the camera for a moment. The clip ended there.
Sakura went on, playing through more footage from her training days. They could tell the passage of time from her hair. Long to short. Short to long. She went through phases, braiding it during her junior days, letting it grow long before cutting it short for her senior debut. And then it grew out again as she continued to compete. Her simple t-shirts started to bear famous logos and sponsorships began to pour in.
A few more people crowded around one end of the table to watch. They ‘ooh’ed and cringed in the same spots. Some gasping when she stuck the hard landings. Murmuring remarks when she spiraled in almost a blur, her arms held above her head. When the videos ended, Sakura looked up in time to see Orochimaru dabbing a tear from his eye.
“Oh, Sensei, you big softie!” she laughed, putting her arm around him for a second. He sniffed, expression quite composed.
“Your take-offs are so clean. But you’ve always been good at those,” he sighed, patting her knee. And then he shuffled back to his original position. Taking a sip of his beer.
“I had no idea Orochimaru-sensei was such a figure skating maniac,” Lee whispered. Kakashi chuckled as he poured him another drink.
“Orochimaru-sensei skated when he was younger. He’s the one that taught Haruno how to skate,” Kakashi replied. And Orochimaru smiled sheepishly.
“If only I was more careful and didn’t tear my meniscus in college,” lamented Orochimaru. Sakura patted his hand on top of the table for a moment.
“Then I wouldn’t have met you. I’m sure it’s still a tragedy in your mind, but I consider if one of my biggest blessings, Sensei,” Sakura assured him. Orochimaru went very quiet as he stared at her. Tears welled up in his eyes. Putting his arm around her, he yelled out for the waitress.
“Another round of beers on me, please,” he called.
A cheer rose up around the table.
Sakura spent the rest of the night getting to know the other teachers. The people like Asuma, Kurenai, and Kakashi had been her own teachers in high school. It felt strange to call them her colleagues now. And it felt even stranger for them to turn around and call her ‘sensei’ too. She saw new sides of them that she hadn’t had a chance to see. Like how Kakashi giggled with each new drink he tossed back. And how Tsunade told some bawdy stories that made Sakura’s cheeks burn as she listened in.
It had been nearly 10 years since she had set foot in her hometown. And while some of the faces were more lined, there was something comforting about sitting there. Listening to the inconsequential gossip. No stares or whispers as people tried to secretly take her photo.
She let Kurenai pour her another drink. Asuma lifted his glass and everyone else copied him.
“Welcome home, Haruno Sakura,” he crowed.
“Kampai!” everyone else cheered, clinking their glasses together. Beer foaming and sloshing down the sides.
Sakura threw her head back and laughed from deep inside her belly.

i like the way you look at me (when you look at me like that)

Staying over to help Nozaki turns out to be the best thing that’s happened to her in a while.
[ AO3 ]
There's something oddly comforting, Chiyo realises, about Nozaki's presence.
For such a large man, he hardly seems to take up much space at all, at least, in a social point of view. He reserves himself to quiet observation and single sentences answers that are direct and to the point, and Chiyo can hardly see any fault in that, indirectness can often leave to unfortunate misunderstandings; after all, she of all people would know. Even now, hunched over the desk and wearing clothes seemingly so unfitting for his personality, Chiyo doesn't much notice him as she does see him, and as she pads into the room, she startles at the way he instantly notices her.
She offers him a smile. "Thank you for letting me stay over," she tells him softly. "And for letting me use your bathroom."
Nozaki just nods and turns back to his work. "It's no problem."
Chiyo takes her place on the pink cushion in front of the table, her legs tucked underneath her, and picks up her pen. She's long since given up on being discouraged by Nozaki's lack of enthusiastic response — he's not a particularly enthusiastic person, not in trivial moments such as these. She uncaps the brush pen and turns to the paper in front of her, leaning over it in her effort to concentrate on the intricately fine details of the background, and, when she looks up, she tries not to stare at how intently Nozaki is staring at her.
She offers him a shaky, nervous smile, and his brows furrow slightly. "Is…" She begins, her voice no more than a mumble. "Is something the matter?" She asks.
"No," Nozaki says matter-of-factly. "Would you like something to eat?" He asks.
"But… We just ate dinner…" Chiyo replies feebly, not wanting to feel rude.
Nozaki shrugs. "You can have something if you like."
Chiyo blinks at him before she nods carefully. "Oh, uh… Sure I guess…" She replies, watching Nozaki as he pushes his chair away from his desk and pads into the kitchen, switching on the light as he goes. She opens his mouth to tell him that she'll just have whatever is easiest, maybe a cookie or something, but in an instant Nozaki is back and in his hands is a plate of strawberry cheesecake. With wide eyes, she watches as he sets it down on the table in front of her, placing down a fork a moment later, and reassumes his position at his desk. "Nozaki… How…" She can barely manage to get a word out.
"Cheesecake is your favourite, right?" He asks, half-turning to her as she nods, staring down at the cheesecake.
"Yes, it is." She replies, pulling the china plate and fork towards her as she looks up at Nozaki. "But how did you know?"
Nozaki pauses for a moment and then shrugs. "Lucky guess." He says.
Chiyo nods and looks back down at the cheesecake, and then she pickup the fork and digs in. The first forkful is heaven on her tongue; the creaminess of the cheesecake and the tanginess of the strawberries compliment each other in such an utterly perfect way that Chiyo can help but squeeze her eyes shut and squeal quietly in delight. When she opens her eyes, cheeks flushed and a grin spread across her lips, she isn't surprised to see Nozaki watching her with a soft, almost amused smile.
"It's good! The strawberry is amazing, and it's so creamy!" She tell him enthusiastically, and without thinking she digs into the cheesecake again, lifting a forkful up to Nozaki. "Here! Try some!"
For a moment, the fork hangs wordlessly between them and Chiyo realises what kind of a position she has put herself in, because now Nozaki has three options. Option 1) Nozaki takes the fork from her and eats the bite like that, Option 2) Nozaki refuses and turns back to his work, or, Option 3) (arguably the worst option in Chiyo's opinion) Nozaki eats the cheesecake directly off the fork while she's still holding it. And, unfortunately for Chiyo, Nozaki decides to go against everything Chiyo thought she knew about him and leans forward to eat the cheesecake directly off the fork, successfully completing Option 3; Chiyo's worst nightmare.
Chiyo flushes bright red as Nozaki pulls away, nodding appreciatively, covering her eyes with her hands as she tries desperately to think of anything beside the fact that she and Nozaki technically just shared an indirect kiss via cheesecake fork. For a moment she feels like she’s going to cry.
"You're right," Nozaki says. "The cheesecake is good. I'll have to get more of it some time." Chiyo lets out a squeak of agreement and quickly shovels the rest of the cheesecake in her mouth before she turns back to her work, trying to ignore the way her stomach churns excitedly at the thought of Nozaki. "Are you alright? You look a bit red…"
Laughing nervously, Chiyo shakes her head furiously. "No-No! I'm fine!"
Nozaki frowns at her. "You look hot."
If possible, Chiyo flushes even redder, her eyes going as wide as saucers as she stares Nozaki down. "E-Excuse me?" She squeaks.
"I said you look a bit hot, would you like me to open a window?" Nozaki repeats.
Of course, Chiyo says to herself (slightly disappointed) as she breathes an imaginary sigh of relief, that’s what he meant.
“Don’t worry about it, Nozaki-kun,” She tells him with a reassuring smile. “I’m fine. Don’t bother yourself over me.”
Nozaki just stares at her a moment longer before he nods once and turns back to his desk, gathering his papers, Chiyo watches him before she turns back to the papers in front of her, once again momentarily distracted when she senses someone settling across from her, and feeling extremely confused when she notices that the person across from her is Nozaki.
She blinks at him as he settles comfortably on his cushion, laying his pens neatly beside his drawing board. “What are you doing?” Chiyo asks, though it comes out more of a statement than a question.
“Joining you,” Nozaki replies easily, hardly glancing up at her.
“I know that,” She replies. “I mean; what are you doing joining me?” She clarifies.
Nozaki finally meets her gaze. “I thought it may have been a little lonely for you, sitting down here alone now that everyone else had gone,” he looks almost nervous now. “So I was thinking I would join you… If you wanted.”
“Yes!” Chiyo replies, quickly swiping her arm across the table to push all of her pencils across to her side and create a space for Nozaki. Upon noticing Nozaki’s stare she flushes and stares down at her paper. “I mean… It’s nice that you joined me. Thank you.”
Nozaki gives her a small smile, a tiny upturn of his lips. “No problem.”
Chiyo smiles shakily back and turns back to her paper.
The words and lines are swimming in front of her eyes, turning into a swirl of black and white ink and fading pencil lines, and she suddenly regrets eating that cheesecake because of the wild churning of her stomach due to having Nozaki so close to her.
Her chest squeezes whenever she looks up at him, and she gets butterflies just thinking about him. When she had told Mikorin, who had remained blasé despite his usual tendency to run his mouth about news such as this, he had just smiled and told her, “You’re in love, Chiyo.”
Love? She wasn’t in love.
That’s what she used to tell herself, at least. She had never even thought of her feelings for Nozaki outside of a school-girl crush, let alone love. She couldn’t even think of the word without going bright pink and hiding her face in her hands, completely embarrassed.
And that’s what she was doing now, hiding her head in her hands because she thought about the fact she was most definitely, truly, irrevocably in love with Nozaki Umetarou.
And the worst part is that he doesn't love her back.
She stands abruptly. “I should probably get going!” She says shakily, beginning to shove her pencils haphazardly into her pencil box.
“Oh,” Nozaki replies, sounding only the slightest bit disappointed. “Weren’t you staying over?”
Chiyo flushes red in embarrassment. “I meant I should get going to bed.” She hastily corrects herself and Nozaki nods.
“Okay,” he says, standing up. “You can take my bed—”
“NO!” Chiyo cries and Nozaki stops to stare at her halfway through turning down his bed. “I-It’s alright! I… I’ll just… sleep on the sofa…” She says, already grabbing the cushion she was sitting on from beneath her and clutching it to her chest.
Nozaki shook his head. “No, Chiyo, I insist.” He says, gesturing to the bed. “It’s only right that you take the bed. You’re the guest.”
Chiyo hesitates, shuffling nervously on the balls of her feet, dithering. Finally, she sighs and drops the cushion onto the floor. “Okay…” She says. “If you insist… But, at least let me help you make the bed on the sofa.”
Nozaki nods, pleased, and pulls a duvet and two pillows out from the storage under his bed. He passes the pillows to Chiyo and she follows him into the living room, allowing him to spread the duvet over the sofa and turn it down before she places the pillows at the top of the sofa.
Honestly, Chiyo thought this would take longer.
“Well,” she begins, a nervous smile on her face as she turns to Nozaki. “Goodnight.” She says, and, before she can even think, she leans up on her tiptoes and plants a kiss on his lips.
She pulls back and meets Nozaki’s surprised gaze, his hands rested on top of hers, and she goes as red as her ribbons, immediately dissolving into a puddle of stuttering and embarrassment.
“Nozaki!” She cries, hardly listening when he starts to speak. “I’m so so so so so so sorry! I… I didn’t mean to do that, I swear. Look, I’m just going to leave, we can forget that I did that; please forget that I did that. Oh my God.”
Chiyo is silenced by Nozaki’s hands on either side of her face, pulling it up so his eyes can meet hers. He looks so serious that Chiyo can’t help but whimper slightly, her eyes welling up with tears. “Chiyo,” he says. “I love you.”
This time, she does cry. “D-Don’t… say that just to make me feel better,” she says, already trying to dry her tears with her hands. “You don’t have to. It’s alright, I’ll just—”
“Chiyo,” Nozaki repeats. “I love you.”
Chiyo groans in frustration, stamping her foot. “Why do you keep repeating that?” She asks throwing her hands in the air. “Are you trying to get back at me for kissing you? Honestly I didn’t take you for that kind of person but—”
“I keep repeating it because it’s true,” Nozaki says quietly. “I love you Sakura Chiyo. Really.”
Chiyo stops, her eyes widening. “You… love me?” She asks softly, tears still dripping gently down her cheeks. “Are… you sure?”
Nozaki laughs at that, brushing a few tears from her cheeks with his thumbs. “Yes, I love you. And yes, I’m sure.” He tells her, and Chiyo laughs back, leaning into his touch. “Would you like a tissue?” He asks.
“Yes,” Chiyo hiccups. “That would be nice.”
She lets Nozaki sit her on the sofa and thrusts a few tissues into her hands, and she dries her eyes carefully for a moment, trying not to think about how Nozaki has his arm around her.
“How…” She begins, unsure of how to phrase her question as she turns to him. “How did you realize that you… loved me?”
Nozaki considers this for a moment. “I think it must have been the fireworks festival,” he says, nodding. “Yes. When we were sitting on the climbing frame, watching the fireworks, I looked at you and thought that if I could choose a moment to get stuck in forever, I’d choose that one. With you.”
“I confessed to you then,” Chiyo says sharply and Nozaki’s eyebrows shoot up. “While we were watching the fireworks. You misheard me, but you smiled and I thought that maybe just staying friends would you wouldn’t be so bad. I didn’t want to sacrifice our friendship by repeating what I said.”
Nozaki moves closer to Chiyo, wrapping her tightly in his arms and resting his head on top of hers. “You should have.” He says. “At least I would have known.”
Chiyo laughs, wiping the last of the tears away with her fingers. “I think I was better off with you not knowing.” Nozaki pauses before he leans back and shifts Chiyo so she’s facing him and he has his hands on her shoulders. Chiyo stares at him. “Nozaki…?”
“Chiyo, can I kiss you?” he asks and Chiyo squeals loudly, slapping a hand across her mouth.
“I… I… Nozaki!” she manages to squeeze out before she sighs, pushes her hair back from her face and nods, looking up at him. “O-Okay…”
Carefully, he moves his hand up to cup her cheek. “Is this okay?” He asks, and when she nods furiously he moves his other hand to her hip. “This too?” She nods again and he leans in closer, stops and locks eyes with hers. “I’m going to kiss you now,” he says softly. “Okay?”
Chiyo is almost buzzing beneath his fingers, running off nervousness. “Okay,” she agrees, nodding again as her breath hitches when he leans closer. “Wait.” She says and he does as she pushes hair away from her mouth. “I’m ready now. You can kiss me.”
Nozaki chuckles and nuzzles his nose gently against hers. “You’re just so cute.” He tells her, and she can hardly suppress a squeak when Nozaki leans in to capture her lips in a kiss.
The kiss isn’t how she imagined it would be. It’s not toe-curling, or eyelash-fluttering, or breath-taking, and it doesn’t taste like strawberry chapstick. His lips are firm on hers, slightly chapped and warm, and he holds her like she’s about to break, his fingers brushing the curve of her cheekbones and the pink blush of her cheeks.
If she had to put a sensation to the kiss, she’d say it was like a favorite sweater—warm, comforting, and something alike to what you’d wrap around yourself after coming home from a long day of work. The feeling of Nozaki seems to be all around her now, she can smell the tangerine scent of his shampoo and taste the cheesecake on his lips, and she melts into his hands and embrace like she’s belonged there all along.
When he leans back, scanning Chiyo’s face, she’s dazed, her eyes half-lidded and fixed on his lips.
“Chiyo?” Nozaki asks carefully, his hands dropping from her face to caress her arm in a way that leaves her skin tingling. “Are you alright?” He adds.
Chiyo nods and looks up lazily, finally meet his eyes. “You can kiss me again,” She says softly. “If you’d like.”
Nozaki smiles, mischievous and brilliantly bright. She wants to lean up and kiss that delicious smile from his lips. “Hmm… I’m not sure…” He says, and Chiyo seizes the front of her shirt, pulling herself up until they’re face to face—her eyes peering into his with such innocence sincerity that he wants to blush and hide his face from her.
“I am.” She says, and Nozaki doesn’t think there is anything more brilliant that Chiyo demanding what she wants. “I want you to kiss me again, please.” She asks breathlessly and Nozaki complies. He pulls away and she grips his sweatshirt tighter. “Again?” She asks and he does. “Again?”
“Again?” He repeats, faking confusion with a smile that steadily crawls across his lips. “But I just kissed you again times three. How many more ‘again’s do you want?” He asks her.
Chiyo thinks for a moment, releasing his sweatshirt as she falls back into her seat, before she smiles up at him and opens her arms wide. “The word ‘again’ is relative—If I had it my way, I’d have every ‘again’ with you until the end of time.”
Nozaki crooks an eyebrow and looks down at her. “Are you asking me to be your boyfriend Chiyo?” He asks, and, for the split-second she looks dumbfounded, Nozaki thinks he might’ve gone too far.
But she smiles, crosses her legs and smiles up at him, offering him her hand. “And what if I was? Would you say yes?” She asks, and the question is so simply said, that Nozaki takes her hand, brings it to his lips and kisses each finger individually before he lets his lips linger on the back of her hand.
“Of course,” He says, and he loves the way she flushes at the words, her hand still resting in his. “Then I’ll get to call you my girlfriend.”
She snatches her hand back and hides her flushed face behind them, wiggling her toes as she brings her knees to her chest. “Dork.” She tells him, but the word is muffled through where she’s buried her face into her shirt. “You’re too cute.”
Nozaki carefully peels her hands from her face and smiles. “If anything you’re too cute.” He says, and Chiyo feels fifty degrees hotter and just assumes the position of resident tomato-impersonator.
“Stop!” She says, though she’s giggling, her nose scrunched up and a wide grin curling her lips.
“I love you Sakura Chiyo.” He says and she giggles again, smiling brightly with her eyes squeezed shut.
Stop!”
He smiles. “I love you!” He declares.
“I love you too!” She says back loudly, happily, and though she looks startled when she realizes what she’s said, she doesn’t clap her hand over her mouth, she just moves one to her cheek and smiles serenely. “That’s the first time I’ve said that out loud… I’ve thought it, but it’s different saying it."
Nozaki nods seriously, understanding. “Then say it.” He says and Chiyo peers at him curiously. “Say it until it sounds natural.”
Chiyo nods and steels herself, putting on a serious expression that just makes her look ten times cuter. “I love you Nozaki Umetarou!” She declares and Nozaki nods.
“Again!” He says.
“I love Nozaki Umetarou!” She repeats, giggling as she topples back a little, looking overjoyed with the entire ordeal.
“Again!” he says.
Chiyo laughs and pushes her hair from her face. “How many more ‘again’s do you want?” She asks.
Nozaki takes both of her hands in his. “As many as you’ll let me have.” He tells her and she doesn’t know what else to do but stare at him. “I want every ‘again’ with you as many times as you’ll let me.”
“You can have all of them,” Chiyo blurts. “You can have every single ‘again’ I have.”
Nozaki nods. “And you can have all of mine too.”
Chiyo thinks for a moment. “You know, all of our ‘again’s together equal one forever.”
“That,” Nozaki says with a small smile, his thumb brushing gently over Chiyo’s knuckles. “I think we can share.”
Chiyo smiles right back. “I think I’d like that.”
They sit like that for a moment, comfortable in their silence, until Nozaki gets an idea. It springs to his mind seemingly out of nowhere, his mind scanning the codex he keeps in his brain of all the cute romantic gestures he has memorized for his manga, and, before Chiyo can say anything, he has peeled off his sweatshirt and handed it to Chiyo.
“For you.” He says seriously, and though Chiyo takes it, she blinks down at it in confusion.
She looks back up at him. “What for?”
“A gesture.” Nozaki says, and he begins to doubt the decision. “Girlfriends like wearing their boyfriend’s clothes, right? So, you can wear my sweater. Unless… you don’t want to…”
Chiyo is already shaking her head furiously before he can finish his last sentence. “No, no! I want to!” She insists quickly, and she pulls it over her head, standing up to adjust it around her body.
It goes down to her knees and her arms barely make it halfway through the sleeves, but she smiles as if she just been bestowed with diamonds and pulls the hood up over her head, laughing when it flops over her eyes and obscures Nozaki from view. He chuckles and pushes the hood back so her eyes aren’t covered at absent mindedly pats her head. She smiles and tucks her hands into the pocket, grinning at him as she rocks back and forth on the balls of her feet.
“Well?” She asks, giving him a spin. “How do I look? Does it suit me?”
Nozaki looks her up at down. “You look small.” He says.
She rolls her eyes. “I’m small anyway.”
“But… you look cute,” He adds and Chiyo falls silent, her cheeks going pink. “My clothes suit you.”
Chiyo smiles and brings the neck of the hoodie up to her nose, hiding the bottom half of her face in it. “You’re sweet,” she tells him. “In a sort of shoujo-manga kinda way.”
Nozaki has the tack to look sheepish. “I… may have taken tips on how to confess to you from shoujo manga.” He admits and though Chiyo sighs, she’s still smiling; Nozaki’s awkwardness in anything that isn’t romance manga is endearing. “But it worked. So, who says that manga is entirely inaccurate?”
Chiyo laughs and smothers the sound with the sleeve of Nozaki’s sweatshirt. “I guess you’re right.” She says, sitting back beside him on the sofa, swinging her legs idly. “How did you know that strawberry cheesecake was my favorite?” She asks him.
“You mentioned it to me,” Nozaki tells her. “We were sitting doing work and talking about your birthday. You were complaining about how the bakery had ran out of your favorite cheesecake so you couldn’t get a slice after school.” He quickly explains after noticing Chiyo’s look of confusion. “I… remembered.”
She blinks up at him, her heart fluttering in her chest. “I… don’t even remember that,” she admits quietly. “Why did you remember that? I mean! It was a lovely surprise, I’m just curious.”
Nozaki shrugs a little and leans back on the sofa. “I love you,” he says, and it never ceases to make her heart squeeze a little in her chest and leave a smile curling on her lips. “I remember things about the people I love.”
Chiyo nods and makes a noise of acknowledgement, smiling happily to herself. She glances at Nozaki and the way he’s casually leaning against the arm of the sofa and thinks fleetingly about leaning into his arms and curling up on top of his body, but the thought quickly leaves her as he glances down at her and she looks away, cheeks on fire.
Nozaki looks at her a moment and then opens him arms towards her wordlessly. She looks at him. “Do you want me to get something for you?” She asks nervously, unsure of what Nozaki was trying to tell her.
“No.” He says, and he opens his arms a little wider, turning his body towards her.
“Are you cold?” She asks, her brows furrowed in confusion. “Why are your arms open like that?”
Nozaki looks at her. “You want to cuddle, don’t you?” He asks and Chiyo stares at him gob smacked, her mouth hanging open.
Chiyo can’t even begin to describe how… strange it sounds to have a stoic and blunt man such as Nozaki say a word like ‘cuddle’. He stares down at her with the same expression he uses when looking at everything, his arms open for her to fall into, and Chiyo stares right back, feeling so suddenly out of her depth.
Despite her initial shock, she nods. “Yes.” She says, and when she shuffles closer to Nozaki awkwardly and rests her head on his chest, his arms curl around her and she lets out an involuntary sigh, rubbing her cheek against the fabric of his shirt. “You’re warm.” She tells him softly.
“Are you cold?” He asks her.
Chiyo considers this. “A little.” She admits and Nozaki immediately wraps the duvet around them both, leaving Chiyo in his arms and being careful that she wasn’t being jostled.
“Better?” He asks her, his arms squeezing her softly.
Chiyo nods and curls closer to the heat of Nozaki’s body, her cheek smooshed against his chest and the warm weight of the duvet against her as Nozaki shuffles into a position where she’s practically curled up on top of him.
She lets out a warm sigh. “Yeah.” She says, allowing her eyes to close.
She feels Nozaki’s hands carding through her hair, fiddling with it gently, and she lets out another sigh. When he chuckles, she feels it in her bones as a warm, shaky feeling, and his chest barely moves. Then his fingers are brushing her cheek, pushing hair from her face and petting her absently.
“Are you falling asleep, Chiyo?” Nozaki asks in bemusement.
Chiyo makes an indignant noise. “No.” She grumbles.
She can almost feel him smiling. “You sound sleepy to me.” He says, letting out an amused puff of air when she makes a non-committal noise. “It’s okay if you are. You can fall asleep if you want.”
“Okay.” She whispers quietly, her hand curling gently over the fabric of his shirt. “Then I will.”
Nozaki hums lowly. “You look so cute when you’re sleepy. You know that?” He asks and Chiyo is so tired out from the evening that she can’t even manage to make a noise as Nozaki gently strokes her cheek. “Sleep tight, I’m right here for you.”
Before Chiyo drifts into the land of dreams she feels the faint weight of Nozaki’s lips on her forehead and the sound of a quiet, whispered ‘I love you’.
She wakes with Nozaki’s arms around her, fast asleep, as his head rests atop hers, and as a smile crosses her lips, she can’t help but lean up and leave a soft kiss against his cheek.
After all, being with Nozaki like this is everything she’s ever dreamed.

This is for @camilleflyingrotten , the origin story of her #babypastelhanni. I hope you like it! Read on AO3 as well.
Hannibal hadn't visited his aunt Lady Murasaki in years, maybe two years since he moved to America and she moved back to Japan, her young prodigy, Chiyo, was the closest thing Hannibal had to a cousin and he wanted to visit for her sake as well. Lady Murasaki welcomed him warmly as always, and Chiyo proved to be the victim of his same education, strict and demanding. She looked older than the 18 years Hannibal knew she had, but then again at barely 22 he also looked like an old bitter man. It had never bothered him, he dressed in the dark severe clothes he had been taught to dress in to reflect formality and professionalism. Chiyo, like him, was instructed to be a perfect lady, wearing the finest dresses and the prettiest shoes, but she seems much more unsatisfied by this than Hannibal, who never heard her complain, though the displeasure could be seen if you know what to look for in her dark eyes. It was one Sunday morning when Hannibal saw Chiyo sneaking past the back gate and into the streets. Odd, Lady Murasaki had an Ikebana lesson on Sunday and Chiyo had French online lessons as well. She was carrying a big paper bag, probably from a local store, and looking around suspiciously. She could be in trouble, Hannibal figured and left the house in a rush after her. She took a train,  the Yamanote line all the way to Harajuku station. Hannibal followed he to a fast food restaurant but lost her as she went into the bathroom. Hannibal waited for several minutes for her to come out and he almost missed her. The girl that came out was nothing like the Chiyo he knew. It was better. She had changed her clothes. Instead of the boring black dress and simple shoes she had on before she was now wearing a puffy tulle skirt in a bright pink color, Hannibal found delightful.  Her shirt was yellow, printed with the face of a cartoon character Hannibal was not familiar with, she had a pink jacket with blue stripes on top and that was only the first layer. She changed her black tights for a pair with printed hearts on it and a pair of loose socks with blue and pink stripes. Her shoes were and immaculately white, but had a little platform and a small strawberry tied to the very end on the laces. She had a plush purse in the shape of a bear crossing her chest, the strap filled with buttons and pins with colorful patterns and characters Hannibal was only able to describe as "Kawaii".  Hannibal could barely see her hair since it was covered with more hair pins than he had ever seen. In all shapes and colors, some had strands of colored hair and most of them hid her natural dark shade. Her neck and hands were covered in tons of little plastic bracelets, plastic beads and things that look like once upon a time were joined to form some kind of toy. She had makeup on too. Just a little. some eyeliner and a very cute shade of pink lipgloss. Hannibal was mesmerized. This was Chiyo, the real Chiyo, the one who no doubt felt as frustrated and limited in the shadow of his aunt as he did. The one who had to escape in secret to be let out every now and then. And she was perfect, genuine, real, cheap, almost vulgar. Hannibal loved every bright shade, every cute pattern, everything. "Chiyo!" He called, she jumped and looked at him with panic in her eyes. "Hannibal! Why are you... did she?" "No, Lady Murasaki doesn't know I'm here, not does she know you are." "Why are you here then?" "I saw you leave and I was sure you were in some kind of trouble. It seems to me you are fine," "You.... You won't tell her, right? This is the only day I don't have to dress up like an old lady at a funeral..." Hannibal looked down at himself, at his nice pants, leather handmade shoes and dark gray best covering a plain white shirt and tie. He did look like an old man at a funeral. Chiyo noticed this and smiled, her perfect white teeth shimmering under the midday sun. "Come with me." "Where?" "To meet my friends." And he did. ----------- Hannibal had never seen anything like it. Young people gathered in that park to show off, and boy was he out of place. People in all black or all white, in lace and leather, in clothes from 30 years ago and huge hairstyles. It was the one part of Japan where everything felt real, genuine and still very meticulously crafted. "Chiyo-san, Who is this old guy?" "He is my cousin, Hannibal." "Hannibal?" Hannibal heard them repeat his name a few times, it sounded funny in their accented voices. 4 girls and a boy, all dressed up like Chiyo, in the same colors and tons of layers, many have their hair colored and Hannibal saw a lot of potential on his own blond hair. He wanted to be cute like them, with their plush animals and cat paws on their shoes. With hearts and jewels drawn on their cheeks. "So, is he boring or is he cool?" "He wants to be cool, can we help him?" "We can try, he needs a lot of help" "I also speak fluent Japanese," Hannibal added and smiled as the girl went red all the way to her ears, she apologized profusely but Hannibal was not mad, he was oh so ready. Chiyo and her friends, Yuka, Mikasa, Rie, Yuriko, and Toshi showed Hannibal around. They saw the performers, they ate a crepe with nothing healthy inside and took so many pictures that there was no way he could ever see all of them. How long had it been since he laid back and had fun? This much fun? He couldn't remember. But he also felt out of place with his boring clothes in the middle of that splash of color. "Are you doing ok?" Chiyo asked as she walked to the back of their group to talk to him. "I must look like your father." "No, you are way too European for that." "You know what I mean... Maybe you should go on without me." "No, you just need some... some add ons" She took his hand and pulled him over to a little store, she went in and he waited for nervous outside. She came out a few minutes later with a tiny paper bag.  She used a bit of water from her bottle and ran her fingers through his hair. Messing it up and getting rid of the gel. Then he took out a cute hair pin from the bag, it was a pink cookie with a tiny bow. She gently pushed in place and took a step back to admire her work. Then she took her phone out, a million key chains dangling from it, and snapped a pic of his nervous smile. "Here, see? You are adorable, Hanni. It is all a matter of time, of getting the stuff you want, and being who you want to be." The Hannibal in that picture was younger, closer to his actual age, maybe even less. The messy hair fell styled over his eyes and the pin held in place some rebel strands. Hannibal smiled, pleased and excited. "Can we buy more?" "We can make them too." "Now?" "Sure Hanni." Hanni. He liked that.
