Diners first making the acquaintance of this modern Arlene high-table delicacy generally become too busy enjoying it to bother inquiring about its origins. But its refined appearance as served by the royal kitchens in Prydon to the King's guests (or to casual passers-by, since Kynall Castle's refectories are open to all) goes far to conceal its robust genesis as a fishermen's dish of the coastal and riverine country between the eastern and western branches of the Upper Arlid.
The original version of what would later be known as "Silver and Gold" (Arl./N.Arl. Dekhen-u-Ihrsen) was devised by North Arlene prawn fishermen who needed to find a use for shellfish they'd caught that were too small or damaged to offer in the coastal markets of Fûrdéin and Asfahæg. These "subpar" shrimp would be boiled in brine abroad ship and then kept submerged in frequently-renewed seawater until the fishermen made port.
There the ocean shrimp-fishers would meet with their freshwater-fishing counterparts, some of whom would be bringing in new-landed starscale pike (and other types) from the broad and busy breeding grounds of the upper Arlid delta. Cooked salt-water prawns would readily enough be bartered for sweetwater pike and their fine-grained, golden roe—or acquired by taverners in the "borderer" port towns east and west of Rûl Tyn—and cooked together with them.
A popular longshoremen's approach, because it kept well after cooking, was to mix and bind the chopped-up shrimps with grated dried bread and egg to make fish balls or thick cakes. These would be stuffed with chunks of roe from either marine or riverine fish—pike's roe being a favorite for its buttery and slightly smoky flavor, and the roes sometimes being cooked separately first. Then the (sometimes) breaded fishcakes would be fried in whatever fat was regionally most plentiful.1 The fried cakes could afterward be served up in a number of ways: by themselves—though often dipped in savory sauces heavy on whitefruit—pressed onto bread trenchers or sippets and sauced on top, or wrapped in wheaten or oaten platebreads in the Darthene coastal style.
But later on, during the period in the mid-1900s p.A.d.2 when a series of dynastic and climatic disasters led the North Arlene crown to resign most of its major functions to the Arlene Throne, the nature of the dish (as of many others originally native to North Arlen) began to change. Late-century cooks in Prydon and other northern Arlene cities began to upscale North Arlene cuisine in general as a kind of culinary tribute to a kingdom in decline. In the process they transformed this coastline shellfish dish into a more sophisticated composition seen (correctly or incorrectly) as more suited to urban palates, and tailored to emphasize the fresh marine flavor of the prawns.
The dish's modern name refers specifically to the classic Prydon-devised version in which the pale color of the meat of the shrimp is made to contrast strongly with the gold of pike caviar—in this presentation, now delicately rubbed out of the original "skeins" of roe to be served on top. And while we can certainly approach the flavor of the dish when making it on our own Earth, one thing we can't approach is the perfect paleness of the Arlene versions.
This is because we lack a specific and vital ingredient: the Arlene pewter shrimp, Metacrangon peltrumis medioregnis. While otherwise generally similar to Crangon crangon, the common our-Earth north Atlantic "gray shrimp", M. peltrumis is missing something normally commonplace among crustaceans: the protein complex called astaxanthin, which normally reacts with another complex called crustacyanin to produce the red shell and pinkish flesh coloration typical of cooked shrimps.3 As a result, the cooked flesh of the pewter shrimp is pure white, with no other colors to interfere with the shrimp's silvery presentation on the plate.
These more citified versions of dekhen-u-ihrsen involve, somewhat paradoxically, less cooking but more labor. After peeling and deveining, the cooked and chopped pewter shrimp are crushed and pounded in a mortar... hence the term "brayed" in the recipe name. (This indicates that the mortared shrimp mixture has a consistency smoother than something knife-chopped, but nonetheless more textured than an otherwise-mechanically produced puree.) After the addition of soured cream and spices, the mixture is molded between spoons and chilled in an ice-room until it firms slightly, and then served forth on toasted sippets and topped with iced pike caviar.
The use of the term "sallet" in the recipe name harks back (in one linguistic direction) to our many uses for the word "salad", and (in a different, more archaic one) to transitional early-1900s versions of the dish in which the pounded and formed shrimp was served out on roasted lettuce or cooked bitterleaf greens. In current versions, such as the one we illustrate here, greens are often still part of the presentation. But the main theme of the dish remains the contrast between the pale delicacy of the pounded shrimp and the glistening gold of the caviar.
See the right-hand tab on this page for the full recipe.
1 In North Arlen this would normally be sunflower, palm oil, or treenut oil (from the Middle Kingdoms version of our Shea tree, Vitellaria paradoxa).
2 The commonly-used abbreviation for pai Ajnedäre derüwin: "since the Arrival". i.e. of the Dragons, and the destruction of the Dark.
3 More information on our Earth's recent discovery of this chemical interaction can be found in this interesting paper.

WINE DARK SEA - Charon and Vaultie visit the Slog, have interesting conversations with Holly, and drink tarberry wine. (rated e, charon / m!lw, ~5k words. for the prompt "Call me selfish, but I don't want anyone else to touch you",)
The Lone Wanderer and Charon find their way to the Slog from Graygarden; the pre-war robots don’t exactly know the word for ghoul, but when they first saw Charon, they had asked where their shipment of tarberries were. Vaultie knows how to connect his Pip-boy to the Mister Handys by way of his Wadsworth; they download the coordinates and head on their way after offloading some supplies for caps. It’s a surprise when the well-fenced and fortified pre-war pool house is friendly, and a more pleasant surprise still when it turns out to be a ghoul-only settlement.
Wiseman is the name of the ghoul who leads the settlement, and he lives up to his name: he has a soft but steady voice that almost immediately puts Vaultie at ease.
He’s clean shaven, dark eyes and a kind but worn face. He insists on giving them a tour of the place, even though Vaultie demurs knowing how busy he must be. The settlement is small but bustling. He tells them about the cultivation of tarberries and his plans for the future, and their involvement with the trade routes and Minutemen. He is fair, well-spoken and optimistic.
Old habits die hard: Vaultie asks, “Is there anything we could do to help?” Charon audibly snorts.
“We’re actually doing fine at the moment.” Clapping Vaultie’s arm, Wiseman’s voice is as warm as the midday sun. There’s dirt under his fingernails from helping tend the garden. “Nothing we need in particular, other than traders coming through more often.”
So pallid as to almost be glowing, his smile can be measured in kilowatts; Vaultie could listen to Wiseman speak all day. “But the Minutemen haven’t been doing too bad protecting the routes, all things considered, and it’s been picking up lately.”
According to Wiseman, It’s been better around these parts since the Minutemen have started back up and the settlement joined; the dues are relatively small and it came with ramparts and parapets and turrets. The marauding gang of raiders just down the hill in the old ironworks plant haven’t even attempted to raid the settlement since.
Traders came through much more often as well. To sell, but mostly to buy. One of the perks of being the only tarberry farm in the Commonwealth.
Wiseman also makes sure to introduce them to each and every person in the settlement, a special bit of attention paid to both the people that keep his settlement running and to his guests visiting that immediately endears him to Vaultie: there’s Dierdre, black bob and bloodshot eyes, who scavvs and manages the small storefront. Arlen Glass, a pre-war gentleman, hunched over his workbench with a tired smile, who tinkers and engineers. Randy, a younger ghoul with a perfectly coiffed toupee, manages the cooking and cleaning, and Holly oversees the tarberry pools and the laborers in the day-to-day. He knows their names, too, rattling each one off one-by-one, and they wave to them from between the rows of vegetables.
It makes Vaultie dizzy sometimes, how well-managed even the smallest settlements seem to be this far North. He uses that as the excuse why he has to take Charon’s hand when they walk around the carrot fields and skirt the edges of the pool. Everyone looks well-fed. The carrots are growing with lush, green tops and the tarberries float fat and glossy on top of the still water.
Dusk is falling, the sun settling over by the far looming husk of the Ironworks. The temperature seems to drop so quickly here, a brisk breeze rippling the surface of the pools. Vaultie walks in Charon’s shadow. He can feel the eyes of some of the ghouls bent over their crops as they pass. Vaultie squeezes his hand, and Charon squeezes minutely back.
It’s been a long few months since they’ve left the Capital. Vaultie is tired. He knows he is slipping, that his body needs rest.
Wiseman turns to Charon this time. “You both are welcome to stay here a few nights, if you wish. We have a common bedroom and spare cots.”
Charon frowns. “That’s appreciated.”
Vaultie hates asking to stay when they have nothing to offer but their presence. They’ve been running low on funds. It’s a weight off his shoulders. “Really, thank you.”
The ghouls of the Slog live inside the old pool house, though it’s been so long since gutted and altered that the interior looks like any other wasteland home, save the occasional patch of intact aquamarine blue tile embedded in the floors. They live communally, with one large kitchen and an open floor living space. The cots are divided between the former showers.
Wiseman offers them food from his own dinner, pours them a drink, and it almost feels like home. Vaultie can’t stop saying thank you and sorry in equal measures. Wiseman accepts both with grace. Mostly, he and Charon simply listen to the others talk. It’s a boisterous table that lets them comfortably fade into the background.
Hours later, Wisemen goes to bed first, not long after the sun sets; he wakes early with the sun.
“Remember,” Wiseman pauses between the doorframe, “You have a free bed here. The roads around here can be unsafe at night.”
The door swings shut before Vaultie can demure. Many of those that work in the gardens quickly follow. Arlen disappears to his workshop and does not come back. Dierdre is next to bed, and then Jones.
They should retire for the night, he knows, with the way his eyelids are drooping, but it feels nice to be awake without any obligations. Morning will just bring more. Holly stays up late with them. She reminds Vaultie of Willow, the way she verbally prods at Charon until he threatens to crack a smile. She wears a white wig, her hair piled up into a mountainesque bun.
All the ghouls here either shave or wear wigs. And by here, Holly explains, she means the whole Commonwealth. It’s a lightbulb moment that finally explains why Charon had gotten such strange looks everywhere they went, even from other ghouls.
“Yeah, it’s— well, I ain’t an old ghoul, by any means.” She laughs, flushed peachy in the low firelight of the room, “But it’s been a trend for a long, long time here.”
“Not just a trend,” Charon muses, “But…” He turns to Vaultie, at a loss for the word.
“The culture?” He offers, “The norm? Average?”
Charon nods, satisfied.
“Right.” She shakes her head with amusement. Vaultie couldn’t believe he hadn’t realized it sooner, but no one had told them, either. He’s not sure why he just assumed all of the ghouls here had naturally gone bald if they weren’t shaved. “Shaved or a wig.”
“Do you make the wigs?” Vaultie asks, eyeing her hair. He wonders if it feels like human hair, but even he, in his awkwardness, knows to refrain from asking her to touch.
“Sometimes. I mean— not me, personally, no, but there are a lot of ghoul-made wigs. Prewar ones, too. There’s a ghoul near Boston who made wigs before the war, and still does, and apparently his quality is dynamite.” She sighs wistfully, “Costs a pretty cap, though.”
“I can imagine.”
“Yeah.” Holly tilts her head as she takes Charon in, sizing him up. “Natural hair, though. It looks good on you.”
Charon grunts, unconvinced. “The only ones here who seem to wear it are ferals.”
She winces, a laugh covering her unease. “It’s true. About to go feral. Or...” She hesitates, looks almost apologetic, “We don’t have much of a trade of it up here. Illegal, not supported, you know. Unlike the Capital...” She says it as if they’re from an entire different world, the skin around her former nasal cavity crinkling, “But if someone is trying to smuggle slaves south, sometimes... you can tell, the ghouls. They’re not shaved, they don’t have wigs, their clothes fit poorly.”
“Huh.” Vaultie mumbles into his wine glass, swirls the cloudy liquid around. He glances at Charon. “Maybe you should...?”
“No.” Charon scowls.
Vaultie does not press it. Half of his own head has been shaved since the head wound he sustained from the Remnants, and it hasn’t grown past the half-inch length it was at since the radiation burst at the Purifier. The irony of the Brotherhood having collectively co-opted the half-shaved look since hasn’t been lost on him. He’s been incorrectly tagged as Brotherhood more times than he can count.
But Vaultie’s not going to shave, either, for more reasons then he can count. He had it first; he thinks his head would look stupid shaved; he loves the way Charon’s fingers twist into his curls. It feels funny that even hundreds of miles away, they’re still mistaken for their past selves.
“I mean, you stick out, but I’m sure you do that anyway, tall as you are.” Holly sips at her lukewarm beer. Charon hums noncommittally. “You don’t wear wigs, where you’re from?”
“No.”
“Really? Never?”
Charon snorts, “The only man we knew of who wore wigs pretended it was his natural hair.”
Vaultie laughs at the mention of it, “I remember him! With the water— what... what was his name..? G-something?” That was years ago, back when the purifier had just started; back when the Brotherhood still distributed it out to the rest of the wasteland, and only the small basin near the Jefferson was fully purified.
“Griffon,” Charon corrects, smirking behind the mouth of his beer bottle. “Yeah, he said it was real.”
“Did it look real?” Holly asks, and if Vaultie had a little less to drink, he would notice the self-conscious way her fingers hover over the edge of her hairline.
“No… ” Charon trails off at the memory, shaking his head. “But ghouls don’t grow hair.”
“They didn’t look good. Not like the ones here.” Vaultie cuts in, then adds, haltingly, “Y-yours looks really nice,” he insists, “It’s tall.”
Holly squints, and then throws her head back and laughs. “Alright, alright. Thanks.”
They had ran Griffon out not long after finding those stupid wigs, boxes upon boxes stacked together in one of the abandoned Smithsonian buildings. Charon had wanted to ignore him; they knew his claims were false, that he was a grifter. Anyone who could believe water would cure anything other than thirst didn’t deserve the kindness.
But Adam’s heart bled, still does, all over the blue of his vault suit at the sight of those ghouls who fell over themselves at the chance of a cure. The common conditions of ghoulification, so hard to bear that they’d throw their caps away on snake-oil fix-alls. And he just couldn’t let it fester in their midst, even with Charon hemming and hawing.
Besides breaking into the warehouse itself, running Griffon out hadn’t been hard; shiesters weren’t known for their bravery, and with Charon looming and Fawkes closeby, he had left of his own accord after some threats
Charon’s gaze slips sideways to look at Vaultie, heavy-lidded. “Do you want another drink?”
“Yes, please.” He smiles warmly. This is his third. Vaultie thought with age came the ability to handle his alcohol, thinking back to pictures of fathers in pre-war recliners with highballs tipped high with whiskey, only tempered with two cubes of ice. He is twenty-eight and still a glass of wine makes his mind pleasantly cloudy. Tarberry wine, he finds, does exactly the same, with all the added benefit of going down much easier than the sour pre-war stuff.
“Holly?”
She holds up her hand. “I’m good.”
Extending his chipped glass, Charon takes it along with his own empty bottle. Holly watches him leave, picking idly at the label on her beer.
“You two been together long?”
Vaultie licks the faint taste of tarberry from his lips, glancing away from Charon’s back receding towards the kitchen to Holly’s face. She holds up her hands. “You don’t have to answer—“
“N-no—“ He laughs nervously. “Did I...? Sorry, it’s not—“ He rubs at the back of his neck, his eyes shifting back towards the doorway, to Holly. No, she doesn’t look judgmental of it, just conversationally curious. He’s still not used to that. “It’s been, uh. Wow. A decade? Give or take?”
Her eyes flicker upwards as she does the mental math, and he nervously chuckles again, sinking back self-consciously into his seat. The dates are always muddy to him. Sometimes he counts back from their night in the Arlington Cemetery. Others, that first kiss in Smith Casey’s garage.
And sometimes, he counts all the way back, to the day Adam stood in the 9th Circle covered in Ahzrukhal’s blood, white-knuckling the contract in Charon’s towering shadow.
Eventually, he settles on: “Awhile.”
“Huh.” She smiles, “Good for you guys.”
“Uh, thanks.” He’s not sure what else to say.
“Are you two—?” Her brow wiggles up, and Vaultie blanches. “Open?”
“Are w-we—“ He looks towards her— and then the doorway— and then back again, and oh, it’s sinking in exactly what she’s asking. Vaultie chokes, “We’re—!”
With impeccable timing, Charon enters the room with full hands, and Vaultie gestures at him. “Ch-charon!” He sputters, “What a— oh, my drink, yeah, thank you—“ Holly’s amused smirk follows him as he takes his glass from Charon and tries to occupy his mouth as quickly as possible, almost chugging the deep purple wine.
Charon sits back in his seat.
“What happened?” He asks plaintively, taking a sip of his beer.
Holly is not shy: “I was wondering if you two were in an open relationship.”
Charon’s throat twitches mid-swig. When he lowers his bottle, he has to let out a small grunt, grinding his fist against his breastbone. “Oh.” He clears his throat again, a small cough, “No.”
“Thought I’d see. Worked last time a ghoul-smoothskin couple came through.” She says, raising her bottle towards them in mock cheers.
“Nothing wrong in that.” Charon murmurs, though if Vaultie wasn’t mistaken, he still looks a little flushed, or maybe it’s the alcohol. At least, he seems to understand why Vaultie had been so embarrassed, his stare meaningful when they exchange glances. It’s that familiarity born of years together; just a glimpse, a slight twitch in his features, and Vaultie can read the majority of the story there. When he drapes his arm over the side of his folding chair, Charon’s does the same, and their fingers brush reassuringly between the distance.
“You’re both very attractive.” She responds easily, “It’s hard meeting new people this far out. Not that the ghouls here are hard on the eyes... but, well. Haven’t found my match yet, exactly.”
“I believe they say it happens when you least expect it.” Charon says, in that unhelpful way people who have been in a relationship for years tend to do.
Holly snorts. “Well, that, and I’m more into smoothskins, besides. So you can see my options are limited here.”
Vaultie’s not sure if she’s always this forward, or just a little tipsy as well. Charon easily diverts the conversation elsewhere, bouncing off asking if others make it through the Slog often, what other settlements and cities are in the area. Vaultie tries to make a fuzzy memory to ask Wiseman or Arlen for map coordinates tomorrow, just to fill out his Pip-boy a little more.
“Well,” Holly groans into the word as she eases herself up and out of her seat, her back popping audibly. “I’m going to turn in for the night.”
She gathers some of the empties strewn around the tables to toss as she ambles towards the common bedroom.
“Remember, you both have a bed here, if you need one. Don’t feel the need to sleep it rough outside or anything, we’re not pressed for space.”
“Of course! Thanks.” Vaultie softly calls after her. Charon raises a hand in goodbye.
The door clicks shut behind her. Quiet settles into the spaces inbetween them, pierced only by the sound of radcrickets outside and the soft crackle of the trashcan fire in the center of the room.
Vaultie raises his glass, takes one loud, obnoxious sip. Just to make a sound. Charon raises an eyebrow towards him.
Vaultie huffs out a chuckle. Murmurs, sweet and flattered, “Kind of funny that she asked, huh?”
“What?” Charon raises a hairless brow, “Oh.” He glances off, his burgundy skin glowing ruddily in the light of the dying fire. “Yeah. Strange.”
“That’s how handsome you are.”
“You are.” Charon corrects in deadpan, and Vaultie has to laugh, because it’s not the sort of rebuttal he’s heard since the few surviving romantic holovids from the Vault, and most certainly never said in that tone of voice.
“She said both—“ And if he wasn’t mistaken, that was what he was embarrassed about, and not the question himself. Because Charon’s blue eyes flit upwards towards the ceiling, which isn’t very interesting, just water-stained. Vaultie leans over the edge of his seat, grabbing his hand fully, twining their fingers together. He presses a kiss to his knuckles, uses it as leverage to pull himself closer and kisses the side of Charon’s cheek, and his grumbles vibrate against his lips. “Both of us. Attractive.”
“No.”
“Okay, fine— you’re just attractive, then.”
Charon dissolves into a grumbling fit under Adam’s kisses, a flurry of them pressed to his cheekbone, the destroyed shell of his ear. He doesn’t squirm so much as vibrate underneath the ministrations as Vaultie trails down the column of his neck, and he goes completely rigid when Vaultie’s teeth scrape against a quivering tendon.
“Charon...” He murmurs against his skin, “You want... you want to go outside?”
They leave the dredges of their drinks behind.
Hand in hand, Vaultie leads Charon out of the pool house. At night, the Slog is lit up around the perimeter with floodlights and turrets outside the walls. But inside, the only lights still on are the ones lining the edges of the pool, and the stars and satellites are still bright overhead.
It’s been a decade since he first escaped from the vault, but the Lone Wanderer still gets a little moony at the sight of the night sky, twinkling and shimmering just so. It looks especially pretty reflected in the gently shimmering pool, tarberries bobbing softly among constellations. He feels good tonight. He’s feeling buzzed on four very tall glasses of wine, and his limbs are heavy and floating all at once.
When they approach the pool, Charon lets go of his hand to wrap around his waist instead; Vaultie leans back against his chest, into the warmth of his arm around him. It’s chillier this far north, but in a good way, a reprieve from the oppressive heat of the late summer in the Capital Wasteland. It’s still warm here, but under the darkness of night, there’s a gentle breeze.
Charon presses his lips to the top of Adam’s head, where his scars are faded and smooth under the prickly buzz. It catches against the ragged skin of Charon’s face, and he chuckles at the sensation.
“I love you.” He murmurs, easy.
“I love you, too.”
Vaultie unfurls himself from the shelter of Charon’s arms, spins around to face him as he does so, their hands brushing, reluctant to let go. But Vaultie takes another step back, and then another, and he reaches with both arms for the edge of his shirt, taking it off in one smooth motion. There’s something satisfying in seeing Charon’s slight smile one moment, and like a magic trick, when the cloth disappears he’s looking a little dumbfounded.
His jeans are next, though they don’t come off as smoothly with his shoes still on.
“What?” Charon croaks.
“C’mon,” He looks at the pool, then back to Charon, smiles coyly. “Swim with me?”
A past him would have flinched at the wording. Too close to a command. Now, all Charon does is huff out a disbelieving laugh: “You’re drunk.”
“I’m— I’m tipsy.” Vaultie mumbles, giggles, bends down to toe off his shoes, crushing the heel of them in the process. He kicks them aside, away from the waters’ edge.
If the area wasn’t so well-lit— well, but it is, so his underwear stays on as he stumbles his way to the poolside. He dips a foot in, brushing away some of the tarberries to clear a patch of water. It’s strangely warm, just shy of bathwater lukewarm, and when he steps down onto the first step it comes up to his ankles. He takes another step down, water sloshing to his knees.
Behind him, there’s the clank of belts, plates of armor falling to the ground.
He takes another step in, the tangles of tarberries pushing away in his wake.
Charon splashes in behind him, no hesitation in testing the water or adjusting to the temperature; before Vaultie can even turn, arms are being wrapped around his waist, and Charon hauls him up off his feet. Vaultie squeals, scrabbling back to grab at Charon; water splashes up, soaking them both. He snickers and shushes him, presses his face against the back of Vaultie’s neck to muffle his own laughter.
Charon carries him deeper into the pool, spins them around in slow circles; when Vaultie wiggles a little more, he lets him go to float and twist around in the water.
Many people in the Capitol know how to swim now, though there’s still a wide gap between the old and the young. The water’s purified, and nothing truly dangerous swims in it anymore.
It’s a stark contrast to Boston; they still have mirelurks, having evolved to handle the slow neutralization in the decades it took for the radiation to sap out of the water. Nobody swims here much. He gets homesick over the silliest things. And to think he tried to pursue Maxson up through to the Commonwealth alone. It’s a relief that Charon chose to come with him.
Closing the distance between their bodies, Charon’s thick thigh settles warm between his legs.
“You’re handsome.” Vaultie whispers sing-song, pushes himself to his tip-toes and presses their foreheads together so the tip of his nose rests just in the dip of Charon’s nasal cavity. When he speaks, he knows it vibrates through Charon’s face. Not painful, but certainly a teasing bother, “Very handsome.”
Charon laughs, and Vaultie can feel it in his face, too, as their foreheads bump. Their lips briefly brush. “Alright.”
Splashing, he loops his arms around Charon’s shoulders. “You are.” He murmurs. They’re so close that when he speaks, their lips brush. “You’re—”
Charon closes what little gap there is between them; his lips are warm, and he tastes like beer, and they move together in familiar tandem. Vaultie surges forward, and Charon slows him down, and down, until he’s practically whimpering into his mouth.
When he pushes forward again, Charon meets his energy back; a surge of pleasure rockets through him, desperately ratcheting higher with Charon’s own plaintive want. He wants to— kiss him, and feel him, and his hands are scrabbling down Charon’s back, raking marks of red downward. He wants to touch, and be touched, and he arches his hips and grinds his hips against Charon, only slowed by the water, tarberry vines tangling at his heels.
Go, go, please, go he taps down Charon’s vertebrae. Charon groans into his mouth. He’s warm at all points of contact, from his chest to his hips, and he craves it submerged in the cool night.
Charon walks them through the water, wading deeper in. Vaultie can feel the light scratch of the leaves and vines parting before them. The press of the concrete edge of the pool on his lower back.
He bites back a squeal as Charon suddenly hauls him up and out of the water, sits him easily on the edge without even a tremor in his arms. The sudden temperature difference momentarily steals his breath.
Still in the pool, the water’s chest level on Charon; stars twinkling in all of the divots of his ghoulified skin, Vaultie has to lean forward and grab a handful of pec and squeeze.
Charon grumbles out a chuckle. He squeezes Vaultie’s kneecaps in response and knocks them apart to wedge himself inbetween. There’s something arresting about that— of Charon’s wide frame, slick and glistening under the moonlight in their own wine-dark sea, pushing his knees and legs apart, sliding his hands up his thighs as he goes.
You’re handsome, Vaultie thinks, but doesn’t say it, hopes he can read it in his face, in the way his fingers dance excitedly against his shoulders as Charon leans into his lap.
There’s no hiding Adam’s arousal, the reddened head of his cock peeking out from the slit of his briefs, already translucent from the water. Charon’s hand is warm on him, pulling him out of his shorts, making his hips jump; the breeze licks over his skin, wet on the edge of the pool with only his legs still in the water, and it mutates into a full spine-wracking shiver as Charon pumps him once, twice.
“Please...” Vaultie murmurs, leans back to fully take the sight of Charon in. He brushes red hair away from his face with damp fingers. His lovely hair, au natural, no wig needed. “Charon—“
Charon presses his lips to the head of his cock. Hums.
The groan catches in Vaultie’s throat. His leg twitches, tarberries splashing around his heels, brushing against Charon’s torso. It strikes him very suddenly; he can’t be loud. They’re outside, but still close enough to the pool house to be heard.
His big hands smear precum over his shaft, easing each stroke. Charon’s other hand pins his thigh flat down against the edge; goosebumps prickle all over his skin. He knows exactly how Vaultie likes it; teasing his head, tongue dipping into the slit to taste, the slow, loose circle of his hand driving his hips impatiently upward. Any inhibitions that had hold in Adam’s mind have long since washed away.
Vaultie shoves his knuckles against his purple-tinted lips and sags back against his forearms, concrete scraping rough on his elbows.
“Please,” he mumbles. Charon’s only response is to hum, gazing up at him with blue eyes clouded like a spring day. “I need— I want—“
You, he thinks, can’t say it as he catches his tongue between his teeth to keep from shouting as Charon swallows him down. Cheeks hollowing as he sucks, no nose to impede his descent until his lips hug the base and brush the dark thatch of hair there. Just him, only him—
The thought of someone else’s hands on him—
It’s his wine-slick mind wandering. He doesn’t fault Holly for asking. Charon is tall and broad in the shoulders and jaw, and he is handsome– not “for a ghoul”, just plain and simple handsome– though he knows he’s nearly a decade biased, nearly a decade enamored.
Maybe Vaultie’s selfish. He always has been. But he doesn’t want anyone else to touch Charon like this. This is theirs, this is just theirs.
Charon swallows, the flat of his tongue undulating with the movement across his cock— his mouth radiation warm and wet, and Vaultie’s toes curl. His mouth’s the only smooth part of his body— and Vaultie knows, not just from this, knows every time Charon’s sucked on his fingers that he’s all warm wet velvet behind his molars.
Adam’s not going to last long; his breathing is ragged behind his muffling hand, barely swallowing whimpers and whines.
“H-hey,” his voice hitches, desperate as Charon’s lips slide up and off with a wet noise, a sudden shock of cool air before his mouth envelopes him. Even stretched around his cock, he can make out the upturned twitch of a smug smile at the corners of his lips, “Char— ooh God, God, I’m—“
He careens over the edge, doubles-over Charon and scrabbles to find purchase in his shoulders, the thick cords of his neck, anywhere to hold onto so he doesn’t pitch into the dark abyss of the pool. But Charon’s got him, stroking him through the pleasure. Pulls him tight, and then unravels him.
He presses his face Charon’s skull, tries to catch his breath. It doesn’t take him much to push Vaultie onto his back, sleepy and a little teary-eyed from orgasm. It’s a good position to watch him haul himself out of the water, the muscles in his thick arms flexing, stomach trembling with the brief exertion. He looms over him, dripping down onto his pliant body.
Charon kisses him, tongue easing inside when Adam’s mouth pleadingly parts. It’s distracting, and difficult not to get swept up again; he’s cummed but still half-hard, could probably go again if they had the time.
Still, he presses a hand to Charon’s bare chest, and needs no pressure to make him pull back. “You…?” Adam’s fingers drifting down his torso.
Charon shivers under his touch, kisses him once, then twice. “I’m good,” he breaks the kiss to mumble. Vaultie nods, smiling lopsided up at him.
They gather their clothes strewn poolside with little urgency. They can sleep in tomorrow. There are towels in their packs. Vaultie somehow manages to step silently, slipping in and out of the pool house near nude without notice, leaving behind only a trail of puddles. They dry off; Vaultie runs his towel over the shallow dip of Charon’s lower back where water always gathers forgotten until he pulls on a t-shirt and it clings there.
When they’re dry and decent again, Charon grabs another beer from the kitchen. Adam twists his hair up in the towel and pours himself into Charon’s lap, close to the fire, Charon’s free arm wrapped around and holding him in place. Tracing warm circles against his thigh, Vaultie doesn’t know when he falls asleep; only that he wakes up in one of the cots in the sleeping quarters, lying between the wall and Charon’s back, the whisps of his red hair still smelling like tarberries.

(I Love Lucy's second season opener: the candy factory episode, top, Grandma Moses being interviewed by Betty Parry on the radio, bottom.)
Day 59- TV and Radio:
TV:
What’s My Line? season 3, “Miss America, Neva Jane Langley,” September 14th, 1952.
I Love Lucy, season 2, episode 1, “Job Switching,” September 15th, 1952.
Radio:
The Jack Benny Program, “Phil Harris is Replaced by Bob Crosby,” September 14th, 1952.
Betty Parry, “Grandma Moses Interview,” September 15th, 1952.
This is Your FBI, episode 389, “His Brother’s Keeper,” September 12th, 1952.
Today I Love Lucy started up again for its second season, and it was a welcome addition to my TV choices. It was an episode most people are familiar with or have at least seen pictures of. Lucy and Ethel decide to get jobs, and Ricky and Fred take care of the housework. While Ricky cooks 4 pounds of rice for dinner- because that seemed about right to him for four people!- Lucy and Ethel work at a chocolate factory. The famous conveyer-belt scene occurs. It still makes me laugh, even though I’ve seen it many times. Both Vivian Vance and Lucille Ball are masters of physical comedy- if you take your eyes off one, the other one makes you laugh just as hard.
On What’s My Line? there was a can-can dancer and a woman who made fly swatters. One of the guests was a professional football player, and Arlene Francis guessed it on her free guess before the questioning even started! I’ve never seen that happen, and she was really apologetic. Apparently, this guy played for the Los Angeles Rams. The celebrity was Miss America, and Hal Block got pretty gross with her. He’s always coming on to any single female guest, especially the pretty ones. Usually he’s more pathetic than creepy, but in this episode he was creepy. When Miss America came to shake the hands of the panel, he leapt out of his seat and grabbed and kissed her quite forcefully. Not on the lips, thankfully- but I could barely watch.
On the radio today there was a very interesting interview. Betty Parry had a kind of talk show at the time, and there is a surviving interview with Grandma Moses. At the time, Grandma Moses was 92 years old. I didn’t even know she was a real person, but she sounds amazing. She started painting professionally at 78, and her folk art is famous. She gave tips on living a long enjoyable life. I looked it up, and she ended up living to 101! She was born in 1860, which is just crazy to think about. I was hearing a recording of a woman speaking in the 1950s, who was born before the Civil War!
...And now a word from today’s best sponsor: Lucky Strike Cigarettes! Be Happy! Go Lucky! L. S. M. F. T.! No, not Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, it’s- “Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco!” Only Lucky Strikes are made better to taste cleaner, fresher, and smoother! Every single cigarette ad ever says their brand is “smoother,” so you know it must be true! Luckies are tightly packed, so there are no hotspots and no annoying loose ends that get in your mouth and spoil the taste! And they are the only brand that makes this author want to smoke again! (I smoked Luckies years ago, because they were so old-timey and different. But I haven’t smoked in years, so I’m not about to start up again.)

Alan Alda Opens Up About Living with Parkinson's and His Torturous Battle with Polio as a Child In the new issue of AARP the Magazine.
In the new issue of AARP the Magazine, M*A*S*H star Alan Alda opens up about life, love, and what he's learned
At 84, Alan Alda is a survivor — and he's doing just fine during the current pandemic, riding out the storm at his home in Long Island, New York, with his wife of 63 years, Arlene, 87."I'm having a good time under the circumstances," he tells the June/July issue of AARP the Magazine, shared exclusively with PEOPLE. "I've found a lot of positive things. I'm very happy about some of the changes we've had to go through. For one thing, my wife Arlene is looking for ways to be creative during this time, so she's gone back to painting and drawing, and she plays the piano every day and she's experimenting with cooking." He adds: "I haven't eaten this well since the last epidemic."The actor and science buff, who was at a time best known for his years playing surgeon Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce on the hit show M*A*S*H, knows a thing or two about getting through tough times. As a 7-year-old, he was diagnosed with Polio, and underwent six months of therapy that involved having scalding blankets wrapped around his limbs every hour. "It was hard on me," he tells AARP. "It was harder, I think, on my parents, who couldn't afford a nurse and had to torture me themselves. It's always better to pay somebody to torture your kid."
Decades later, in 2015, he discovered he had Parkinson's disease. His reaction to the diagnosis? "I began to exercise a lot," he says.
"A lot of people hear they have Parkinson’s and get depressed and panicky and don’t do anything, just hoping it’ll go away. It’s not going to, but you can hold off the worst symptoms. Movement helps: walking, biking, treadmills. But also specific things: I move to music a lot." He tells the magazine, "It's not the end of the world when you get this diagnosis."So how does he retain his positive attitude, especially with all the uncertainty in the world?"You know, with the world changing so rapidly, there’s no point in being optimistic or pessimistic about anything. You’ve just got to surf uncertainty, because it’s all we get."Always curious about science (in 2009 the actor founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University on Long Island), he says he turns to educating himself on the mysteries of the world 25 years ago, and encourages others to be more curious as well, to learn real facts instead of believing everything they might see online. "It's clear our lives depend on it," he says of embracing science and sharing information outside of your inner circle. He adds, "One of the most basic things I’ve tried to do is give people a greater understanding of how science works — the importance of evidence, the importance of many trials, of rigorous studies, and the idea that we learn only a little bit at a time. No single study is the end-all answer for everything."
To maintain an active lifestyle and help hold back the progression of Parkinson’s, the star said that he regularly exercises. “I work out. You can hold back the progress if you do a lot of specific exercises. So I do a lot of crazy things,” he said.
Among the physical activities that Alda enjoys is boxing, juggling, tennis, swimming, marching and bicycle riding.A unique one that he regularly does? “I march to [John Philip] Sousa music,” he said with a smile. “A lot of Sousa music going on all the time in my house.”

The Valancourt Book of Horror Stories, Volume Four, edited by James D. Jenkins and Ryan Cagle, Valancourt Books, 2020. Cover art by M.S. Corley, info: valancourtbooks.com.
Since 2005, Valancourt Books has unearthed and republished almost 500 lost and neglected works from the 1760s through the 2000s, and now for this long-awaited fourth volume of the acclaimed Valancourt Book of Horror Stories series, the editors of Valancourt Books are proud to present 15 more great horror tales — all by Valancourt authors — from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. This volume features five brand new stories that have never appeared elsewhere, two rare foreign stories translated to English for the first time, and eight more scarce and seldom-seen tales. The stories in this volume will take you inside the vivid dreams of a woman who can kill in her sleep; to the set of a reality show where contestants may be transformed into specimens of beauty—or into freak show monsters; to a hotel where guests are besieged by a powerful hurricane—and by something even more terrible and deadly. You will read of the bizarre and macabre adventures of a man seeking a skeleton in 1960s London as a gift for his medical student cousin—and his quest's shocking outcome. You will learn how a simple grammar mistake can lead to a terrible and untimely end for a traveler in Venice. These are strange, sinister, and scary stories, by turns suspenseful, horrific, and darkly humorous. Featuring a lineup of rarely reprinted classic tales together with new stories destined to become future classics, this collection is a horror anthology like no other.

Dear God,
Thankful and blessed today. I woke up late because its my day off, and I m in the house of Haifa in Sharjah. Haifa cooked for our brunch and I ate too much. I also met John and Kuya Dilo which is our previous housemates when I lived there. We had chit chats again with Haifa. I scrolled on my social media accounts, chatted my family and friends. We prepared ourselves because we are going to have a dinner at Lamesa for I want to eat Isaw which is buffet. I treated Haifa and we departed again because I am going back to Al ain. I ride a carlift and I was a little bit afraid for I am only the passenger and the driver is on different race. In God’s grace I arrived home safely. I also bought Leche flan, which is my favorite and I am so happy for it. Right now I am preparing to sleep. I did my self care routines. Arlene gave me a dress and I m so thankful for it. I read few pages of the Bible. Have mercy on us Oh God. Guide us always to the right path. Remove sickness, danger and negative things in our life. Answer our prayers in your perfect time. Thank you and I love you God.

We remember.
16 years ago, my church held an impromptu service in the wake of 9/11. There was only a preliminary list of the people killed. Everybody drew little sheets of paper with a name on it from a basket, and during the prayer we each read the name we held aloud at the same time. The name I got was Stephen Dimino. I make a point to say his name out loud several times a day every 9/11.
I put a list of their names under the cut. You will be scrolling for a long time. I encourage everyone to pick out a name, write it down and say it in whatever form you communicate best be it AAC, sign language, or even keeping a photo of that person with their name if you can find a photo of them.
Some say a person’s memory stays alive as long as their name is still read or spoken. I can’t bring back the people who died that awful day, but I can use this platform to put their names out there so their memory stays alive.

Here was my answer to this topic, but I posted it too late. /u/Ucumu beat me to the punch and got all the points. Please make sure to read his post here.
The Maya
The Classic Maya were known to have several house forms. The type, size, and cost of a house reflect the family’s status within Maya society. Palaces would obviously belong to the ruling elites or very high status elites. But what if you are not a king or a member of the king’s family? Where do you live and what do you live in?
Commoners
The majority of Maya commoners lived in simple wattle and daub structures. The construction of a commoner’s house first begins with the construction of a low platform. This platform is made of stone, earth, and other debris in order to raise the superstructure above the ground. The surface of the platform is stamped down and will act as the floor of the perishable structure. Next, a stone foundation is constructed with one or two courses of stone. This foundation will allow for the construction of the wattle and daub. Next, the wattle is constructed for the walls of the house. Wattles consist of small branches and twigs that are interlaced together. Next, daub is applied to the wattle of the house. Daub consists of mud mixed with aggregate such as sand, grass, or wood chips. This aggregate helps to bind the mud and prevent it from cracking. Lastly, a roof made of thatch or grass is erected to protect the interior of the house. The roof is gabled so that the slope of the roof falls in two directions from the ridgepole. The roof extends past the wattle to form eaves on three sides of the house and a porch on the fourth. The spaces beneath the eves and the porch allow for activities to be conducted outside of the home in the light. One of the most important activities is cooking with the kitchen located against one side of the house.
That is a basic Maya house. It would look very similar to this modern reconstruction. It is very simple and very basic. Elliot Abrams (1994) conducted an examination of residential architecture at the site of Copan in Honduras. Copan was a large Classic period Maya city with some impressive structures. In Abrams’ examination, he estimated the volume of the materials used to construct these residences. Using these volumes, Abrams applied rates of work taken from replicative experiments to determine how long it would take to build these structures. For a basic commoner house, the house averaged around 200 person-days. That means it would take 1 person 200 days, 200 people 1 day, or some other combination of people and days to construct the house. Abrams argues that most construction would have taken place during the dry season, but the full dry season could not be spent building a home as other activities needed to be done (warfare, planting next season’s crops, etc). He argues that half the dry season would be normal for construction. In Copan’s case, that would be 60 days. That means if someone wanted to build a house requiring 200 person-days in 60 days, they would need 4 people to help out. Trying to recruit just 4 people for construction would not be difficult if one relies on their kin relations.
Higher class
Obviously not everyone lived in such a simple house and there are other house forms at Copan that are somewhere in between a palace and wattle and daub structure. At Copan, Abrams examined houses which he dubbed “improved architectural form” to set them apart from the “basic architectural form” of a wattle and daub structure. The characteristics that set them apart from the basic form include a longer and taller platform substructure which eliminated the porch, greater use of stone in construction fill for the substructure platform, the use of dressed masonry blocks for retaining walls backed by masonry and mortar for the substructure platform, the superstructure foundation made of masonry blocks, internal room size variations within the house , a beam and mortar roof or a vaulted roof using a corbelled arch, the construction of benches along the interior walls of the house, external sculptural decorations, and the use of a thick layer of limestone plaster to protect the house and substructure platform from the elements. These stone built houses could be found in clusters around courtyards at Copan.
For comparison, this is a stone house at the site of Coba further north in the Yucatan peninsula. Or this sketch of a stone house from Copan (Fash 1989). These houses use a significantly larger amount of labor than the basic wattle and daub structure. The average amount of person-days needed to construct these houses was almost 4,000 person-days. That means if you wanted to build a house in a single dry season you would need 67 people working on your house for 60 days straight. Obviously, these houses could be built in stages. Perhaps one year the substructure platform was built, in the second year, the walls were erected. And in the last year the roof was constructed and the whole thing was covered in plaster. Even so, you would need 23 people a year to help build your house. In these cases, these houses were most likely used by higher status individuals rather than everyday commoners. These people were most likely minor nobles rather than any sort of middle class we may have today.
Maya cities
So what did Maya cities look like? Well, it’s not easy to reconstruct. Archaeological work is painstakingly slow and expensive. Depending on the research interests of the archaeologist, they may use what limited grant money they have to target specific areas they hope will yield fruitful data to answer their research question. That means many houses go unexcavated and are allowed to be consumed by the jungle vegetation. This makes it difficult to imagine what the landscape may have looked like with all those houses. Fortunately, the cost of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has allowed archaeologists to make use of this system to map huge areas. What they have found, is that the landscape can be much more dense than we previously believed. The Chases have shown that the area around Caracol is much more heavily terraced than previously believed with formerly unknown sacbe (raised roads, white in color) linking the ceremonial center with other secondary centers. Another project focusing on the Postclassic city of Mayapan has shown that the urban sprawl of the city extended well beyond the city walls. Those bumps in the landscape are the buried remains of buildings that create bumps in the landscape. These buildings would have been clustered into neighborhoods and barrios around courtyards, plazas, and smaller temples dedicated to a variety of different gods.
Commercial buildings
For the Classic Maya, there is an ongoing debate as to whether markets existed in cities. They, for sure, existed in the Postclassic but the Postclassic had designated areas for markets to be held. Classic period cities do not always show that same sort of planning. If you are interested, I did answer a previous topic on Maya markets here.
