The Wolf and the Pig
Gray had tried to warn them. He’d said, quite plainly, that he could manage the station by himself and that didn’t need anyone else here with him. For the most part, they’d listened. He’d had five years with hardly any interference and he had managed his vast, remote area of the national park without a single incident to mark his record. Perhaps that was why they’d sent Callum here: to learn from the best.
It had been the night of the full moon when Gray had found out about the new recruit and he’d descended into a rage unlike any other; ending in his decimation of the local wildlife in a way that would take the ecosystem many months to recover from.
Being alone was the best way for Gray to manage his curse. He was the lone wolf, living in an environment that best suited the nature of his true self. It had been fifteen years since he had been bitten, as a young recruit for the National Park Rangers. In that time, and with each passing full moon, he’d come more and more to resemble the creature of the night. He’d grown hairy, strong and lean; his handsome features darkening and his stature increasingly intimidating. On the rare occasions that he came across people in his job, they never even considered questioning his authority or status.
Keeping people away from Gray wasn’t about protecting them. It was about territory. He knew that if someone else was posted here, they’d eventually get in his way on the full moon and he’d end up biting them. If the curse was able to manifest within them, there’d be two of them here, hunting in the same patch. And that would never do.
From the first email, Gray was hostile with Callum. He got a sense of the young guy quite quickly: eager, knowledgeable and passionate about conservation. He was going to be a nightmare, getting in his face and asking inane questions over the many months of his placement. Gray had tried to fight it, to not cooperate, but it had all come to nothing. Callum was already on his way.
The harshest of winters was over and the Spring was well underway as Gray drove the many miles out west to the location that Callum needed picking up from. They’d put him up in a motel for the night, which, despite its basic appearance, would probably be a lot more comfortable than the reserve station he’d be sharing with Gray from now on. As Gray drove into the parking lot, the guy was already there, dressed in his new uniform and carrying a massive backpack, ready to leave. He smiled keenly and reached out his hand to shake Gray’s, as if he had genuinely been excited for this moment for the last few weeks.
Gray pretended not to notice, shuffling to the back of the vehicle to secure something that had come loose on the journey down from the mountains. He was late arriving, deliberately so, having spent the last hour picking up supplies at a sluggish pace, knowing that Callum was waiting. However, Gray looked back as a slightly deflated Callum pulled off his backpack and slung it inside the truck. He was a tall, surprisingly pretty-looking thing, with an incredibly lean frame and tiny butt. He was no doubt toned underneath all those clothes, but Gray smirked to himself, already feeling a sense of superiority based upon the massive amount of muscle he had in comparison.
The first hour in the truck was painfully tense, as an awkward Callum tried to make small talk. Then, as the roads became more inclined and dangerous, the twenty-two year old simply sat, silently glued into his seat, clutching anything he could as Gray threw the vehicle about at speed, knowing these challenging roads better than anyone else in the entire world. Gray could hear the boy’s heart beating wildly and smelt the emerging scent of him as the sweat began to pump out of his body. Over the years, he’d developed an odd sense for judging humans and he smirked, seeming to intuitively know that Callum was never going to be the alpha male type.
“You’re on your own tonight. I’m off to check out some reports of poaching east of the river. I’ll have to camp there this evening,” Gray explained a couple of weeks’ later, knowing that the full moon would soon be upon them.
“What reports?” Callum asked, already across everything at the station, like the overly keen nerd he’d turned out to be. “I’ve not come across anything.”
“I’ve been here for ten years. I’ve got my own contacts who let me know what’s going on out there,” Gray shot back; shutting Callum down as soon as the guy tried to scold him for not logging it officially. But still the young guy looked at him with suspicion. He’d already come to learn that Gray didn’t always do things by the book; that he was overly aggressive and intimidating when dealing with potentisl conflicts in the park, as well as an almost unnecessarily private person.
Gray didn’t remember all of it. He never could. He’d done as he’d promissed and camped many miles away from the station. But there had been a chase of some kind whilst in his wolf form that night. He’d drifted towards the south and west. Perhaps he had caused a stir in the forests that had aroused Callum’s suspicions, given that Gray had accidentally seeded the idea of poachers, but he remembered coming across a human beside a vehicle, carrying a flashlight. There’d been an altercation; the taste of blood and Gray had then continued his hunt, waking far from his camp and needing to hike back, barefoot and naked, as soon as the sun rose.
It wasn’t until the evening that Gray returned, having slept for several hours in the tent afterwards, trying to recover his strength. He saw Callum sitting with his back to him, looking at the computer screen. He would have seen Gray pulling in on the monitor, but he hadn’t got up to welcome him, having realised that his friendliness towards Gray would never be reciprocated.
That was when Gray saw it: the bandaged forearm on Callum’s left arm; not broken, but still with blood leaking through in patches. The sight of it made the vague recollections of the night before cement themselves properly in Gray’s mind.
“What happened to you?” Gray asked, knowing the answer but determined to make one last vain attempt at denying the truth.
Callum turned, looking sweaty and vague. “I came across a wolf last night,” he explained, lifting his arm up with his other hand to demonstrate how sore it was. “The biggest I’ve ever seen in my life. I got lucky that he was hunting something else, otherwise it could have been a lot worse.” He bristled and looked accusingly at Gray. “And, since I was on my own here last night, I had to drive myself one-handed, all the way to the local hospital for a tetanus shot. I’ve only just got back.”
Gray rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, though not quite for the reasons Callum might have assumed. “Well, that’s what it’s like out here. If you don’t like it, you know where the door is.”
With his usual bravado, Gray marched across the space and into the shower room, closing the door behind him. It had been so long since he had bitten someone, he had almost forgotten what it was like. He looked at himself in the mirror, seeing that his skin was still grimy, despite washing in the river that morning. Then a smirk spread across his face. He’d known Callum for a couple of weeks by this point, knew his scent and character. His body would fight the curse and most likely be successful. But in doing so, it would provide Gray with more entertainment than he had had in many years. It was exactly what the pretty little upstart deserved. This was going to be interesting…
Callum’s wound healed with surprising speed and the boy was soon back to normal, irritating the life out of Gray. His body was enjoying the reprieve, not necessarily realising that the building moon of the next month would be launching an attack on his body that he would never see coming. He began to look feverish the night before the full moon and slept the entirety of the next day, fighting the infection. Pleased that he no longer needed to hide, Gray simply stripped off that night under the moonlight and embraced his transformation.
Callum’s fever broke two days later and the young man seemed surprised to see Gray standing over him with a cool towel and reaching for a glass of water.
“How’re you feeling?” Gray asked, managing to make himself sound genuinely sympathetic. He looked down at Callum’s body; even skinnier than usual, dehydrated and weak. Nonetheless, it had been victorious. After all, Callum had not transformed into a wolf. For Gray, it had been a very different story, all those years ago. His body had put up no fight at all, and he had become a wolf with each moon since he was twenty years old.
“Like I’ve been run over by a bus…” Callum sighed, lifting a limp hand to help Gray feed him the glass of water.
“You’ll be okay now. I’ve seen this a lot out here. Give it another day and you’ll be up on your feet like nothing’s happened.”
Callum put his head down again and sighed with disbelief. Nevertheless, he recovered just as quickly as Gray had predicted, scrambling around in the kitchen area, even after Gray had made him a hearty meal. Gray watched the boy with a secret glee. Whilst Callum’s conscious self might have been oblivious, his body certainly knew that there was a war going on. He’d survived this month, but he’d need to be stronger for the next full moon if it was going to overcome the curse. And so, Gray sat back and smirked, seeing the slender pretty-boy suddenly develop the most ravenous of appetites.
Gray didn’t often head out for supplies, given how far from civilization the station actually was. However, in the larder, there were vast supplies of everything needed out here, including mountains of prepackaged energy snacks, required for days out on hikes in the wilderness. Within three weeks, an overcome Callum had decimated every last bit of it. Each day since the full moon, his body had taken in masses and masses of food; a consistent gigant overdose of calories that had quickly started to make its mark on his body. Like a tank, being loaded with fuel, Callum’s body had deposited those calories within fresh fat that quickly formed a plushiness under his skin. Budding lovehandles had started to push their way out of his sides and there was general, lethargic, heavy plod to his steps as he lazily went from the computer screen, to the truck, and back again. Callum was sleeping a lot more than usual, as if his body was conserving energy for something else, and the boy’s mind was less active and sharp.
“Are you not chatting with your girlfriend tonight?” Gray asked, half mockingly as he saw Callum drifting off to sleep in the chair with a half eaten oat cookie still in his hand.
Callum shook with a start from the sound of Gray’s voice and he glanced sleepily at the time. “I’ll call her tomorrow instead,” he mumbled, nibbling once more on the snack and reaching for another, before falling back to sleep.
Gray smirked. He hated listening to Callum on a video call with his girlfriend from back home. Callum was exactly the type of ‘nice’ boy to have the same girlfriend from the beginning of high school, and overhearing them going on endlessly about how much they missed each other had made Gray vacate the station on more than one occasion. Now, however, the conversations had started to become a lot more interesting. Callum’s girlfriend had noted with concern how his face was starting to look rather puffy. There was a fullness to his cheeks and a gentle softening of his jawline that she didn’t mind pointing out. Callum had denied this entirely, blaming the camera and the lighting in the station. Then, with a seeming lack of control over himself, he had continued to nibble on multiple snacks well into the night afterwards.
Gray set off to pick up more supplies and he hunted where he could for great stacks of meat that the other national park rangers would never find out about. In doing so, Callum never went without food, despite never ridding himself of a constant hunger. He slipped into a feverish state once more in the afternoon of the full moon and awoke the next morning, feeling like he was hungover, dehydrated and extremely hungry.
It was sometime within that second month when Callum’s pathitically tiny pants stopped fitting. Gray had noticed them pinching him for some days, further emphasising the fat that was spreading across the boy’s waist and into his pert little buttocks. Now, however, Gray saw the splay of the broken top button, inadequately concealed beneath a belt that Callum had clearly taken from Gray’s stash. For the first time in his life, Gray simply laughed at this; pulling himself back from the mild irritation that initially came to him whenever he was around Callum. Furthermore, Callum’s shirts were fitting in the most unflattering way imaginable, clinging to the little round, bloated stomach that had formed beneath his slender chest and making it seem even bigger than it currently was. In under two month’s the boy’s body had undergone a period of rapid, ferocious fattening that had left the pathetic creature in a state of bewilderment and embarrassment.
For the most part, Gray and Callum mostly ignored the changes that had taken place, or at least politely failed to mention them. Callum quietly sourced new pants and shirts to wear and he kept himself covered up most of the time. In his clothes, Callum arguably looked better than usual, with a fuller, more maculine build than he’d had before. But as the fat continued to build, Callum started to look genuinely chubby and even out of shape. As the summer heat kicked in hard, Gray walked around without a shirt on most days; showing off an impressive, muscular build that was now in such contrast with the increasingly bloated form of Callum. It seemed that the guy was particularly susceptible to belly fat, amasssing quite a little paunch in no time at all. It was now obvious that his once flat chest was swelling up with larger nipples and, by the end of July, Gray found it difficult to keep a straight face as he watched them flutter and bounce a little as Callum walked about. The immune response really was an amazing thing. With all this fresh fat on his body, Callum appeared more than capable of fighting the successive full moons; yet he was still eating and gorging and piling on more and more pounds. His immune response, much like when it dealt with many allergies, had kicked into overdrive.
It was after Callum’s fourth full moon that Gray began to pick up on the strange scent that the twenty-two year old was giving off. Whilst the boy’s body was doing a good job of preventing the physical wolf transformation, there was no denying that, in having been bitten by Gray, Callum was now part of Gray’s pack; whether he knew it or not. A bond formed each time this happened, and developed over time. Already, the chubby boy was starting to give off a strange cocktail of pheromones in Gray’s company. He seemed to grow coy in his older colleague’s company, lost his interest in messaging his girlfriend and became surprisingly awkward whenever Gray walked around without a shirt on.
Despite knowing that this was coming, Gray had had no intention of going there with Callum. He’d expected the boy to have blamed his new form on the job and quit long before this even became an issue. But things were moving a lot faster than Gray had anticipated. Gray had witnessed this type of fattening before in those that fought off the wolf curse, but he had never seen it happen so quickly, or so extremely. But now it seemed that the same was true of the pheromones Callum was producing. They were potent, strong, extreme and altogether impossible to ignore.
“Here, I made you some coffee,” Callum declared, handing over a warm mug to Gray, sitting with his binoculars on the porch area, overlooking the forest below.
“Thanks,” Gray mumbled back. Even outside, the flood of pheromones as Callum came out here was almost unbearable. The chubby boy absolutely stank of them and it was hard not to be distracted by it all.
“We’re running low on supplies again,” Callum began explaining.
Gray suppressed a sigh. Whilst incredibly amusing, Callum’s ravenous appetite was becoming quite a drain on his time. “Okay. I’ll see if I can head out later,” he grumbled.
Callum sat down, flooding the space with even more of his scent and Gray began to twitch awkwardly, feeling blood beginning to pump into his groin.
“In fact, I’ll head off now,” Gray declared, suddenly desperate to remove himself from the situation as he felt his erection swelling. He stood, hiding his groin with the binoculars and grabbed the keys to the truck. For the first time ever, as he drove away, he started to wonder whether he should just keep on going and never come back. Otherwise, it’d be hard to know what would happen next.
Gray returned much later, deciding to purchase the most calorific foods he could, in the hope of fattening Callum up even faster and sending him packing; concerned that the lifestyle of a National Park Ranger was not good for his health. He arrived late in the evening to find an exhausted-looking Callum asleep on the couch with the last remaining food items destroyed and decorated around his greedy face. A sliver of fleshy skin was uncovered as the boy’s shirt failed to hide the entirety of his torso and Gray stood, transfixed by what he was seeing; inexplicably aroused by the toxic fumes emanating from the pot-bellied boy on the couch. His erection immediately sprang to life and he tugged at his pants in the hope of hiding it better. He needed to check in with the rest of the crew online and tried to distract himself with menial tasks, despite the blood pumping wildly into his crotch.
Not long afterwards, Callum awoke and began eating once more, making a sizable dent in some of the items Gray had just brought back with him. “Don’t you ever stop eating?” Gray asked loudly, confused by the strange swirling emotions he was feeling and needing some sort of outlet for his frustration. “It’s disgusting! I’ve never seen anything like it! What the hell is your girlfriend going to think when you next get time off?”
“Actually,” Callum began, briefly stunned by Gray’s outburst that he actually stopped eating, “we, sort of, broke up this afternoon.”
Perhaps it was the pheromones making Gray care, but Callum’s words really did make him stop for a moment and wonder what he should say next. He stood, almost moving to approach Callum and offer his sympathies. Words poised themselves on the tip of his tongue. Then he breathed and fought once more to retain his composure; turning away and heading straight to his bed.
With sensitive hearing, Gray had found it harder to sleep ever since Callum had arrived. That night, however, the sounds of nibbling and chewing were drilling into his skull. Compelled by an insane hunger, Callum was up in the middle of the night and making his way through many of the calorie dense things Gray had supplied. On occasion, he heard the boy whimper, as if his tummy was too tight to continue, followed by more biting, chewing and swallowing.
Having lost his patience, Gray ripped himself from his bed and strutted into the shared space, ready to shout at the top of his lungs. “Why are you fucking eating at this time of night?” he roared, throwing his door open and receiving a full blast of pheromones as he did so. The reason for this was simple. Standing in the space, croched over the counter and stuffing his face was an almost naked Callum, dressed in nothing but a pair of overly tight boxers, trying to hold back a swollen rear and mercilessly cutting into meaty, well developed love handles. It was the first time Gray had seen Callum’s naked torso since the fattening had started, and even without the masses of bare skin oozing uninhibited pheromones, it was enough to make him stop in his tracks.
Callum jumped and his quivering hands tried to conceal the masses of wrappers he had made his way through. He swept them quickly into the sink and out of view. Then he glanced back quickly but did not turn around to face Gray, deeply embarrassed and evidently not wanting Gray to see the very obviously rounded belly he had grown; grossly swollen by the midnight feasting. “I’m going to bed now!” he cried out, like a kid caught out, talking to the wall in front of him instead of Gray himself.
But Gray was gone. He’d slept naked ever since he was a teenager and the pulsing erection he grew now came to him faster than any other in his life. It was undoubtedly the scent Callum was giving off, but there was also something so arousing about the soft curvaceousness of Callum’s new form: like Gray was the wolf, and Callum was his own blubbery little pig. Fighting this wasn’t an option anymore. They were both animals after all, driven by their instincts and desires. He marched forwards with purpose, observing the vibrations from his heavy footsteps quivering the soft fleshy fat that swelled around Callum’s sides.
No words were needed now. With Gray’s strong arms, he turned Callum around to face him, immediately spotting the erection that bounced forth from the chubby’s boy groin. Then, holding the chub’s face in both hands, Gray kissed him with more passion than he had ever thought himself capable of. Callum returned it, and within no time at all, both men were stroking each others’ hardness, moaning like they were already ready to explode.
Even amongst all that, Callum reached into the sink and grabbed the leftovers of the energy bar he’d been eating when Gray came in, swallowing quickly before returning to kissing straight afterwards. Gray’s hand explored the soft flesh that had blossomed around Callum’s waist and couldn’t help noticing how thick and juicy his glutes felt as he curiously bounced them. However, after only another minute, Callum paused his kissing once again and looked longing across to the other side of the kitchen area.
“Are you actually still hungry?” Gray asked, noticing that Callum was fixated by the large open box of oat bars. He walked across the room and pulled one out of the box, unwrapped it and seductively pushed it towards Callum’s mouth in order to maintain the erotic vibe.
Suddenly, Gray detected a great plume of pheromones leaching from Callum’s skin. It made Gray’s erection, which was already impossibly hard, immediately stiffen to an even greater extent; like a muscle trained to its absolute limits. Callum’s moan didn’t help either. Gray already knew his gut was packed tight and yet he nibbled from Gray’s hand with a greed that felt so submissive and deeply sexual. The feeling was not unlike the thrill he had each full moon, tracking down his prey. He pushed the food in deeper, alternating between stroking his and Callum’s hardness as he did so. The sense of power and control he felt was sending him over the edge with lust. He knew he could never be with someone like himself. Wolves were aggressive and status-driven. It was a constant battle to be the alpha. But here was Callum: doughy and soft, eating from his hand and gazing at him with pure submissive affection. This was going to work out. After all, who else was better suited to a wolf, than a greedy little pig?
Over the next few days, Callum and Gray tried to talk through the strange bond that was forming between them. Gray had been alone for so long that he found it harder to put what he felt into words. The pack mentality had meant his lust for the chubby boy had very quickly evolved into feelings of love.
Callum, on the other hand, had had no problem in opening up, explaining how drawn he’d become to Gray for quite some time. But he was also struggling. He didn’t understand the extreme hunger he’d had for the last few months, and he felt confused by how rapidly his body had been altering as a result. Gray listened to him with feelings of guilt, knowing the answers to all of the boy’s questions and yet not quite feeling ready to share them. But, with the full moon soon approaching once more, Gray felt a sense of duty to help protect his new lover from its effects; satisfying the glutton’s ever last hungry desire and swelling that increasing layer of insulating fat across his body. For now, it was the only love language he knew.
The fat was increasing its territory once more, spreading itself across Callum’s neck and bloating his chest. The athletic form he had once had was now being masked by it all; overcome by how obviously the new weight sat on his body as pure fat, jiggling and soft. It was depositing itself everywhere, stretching and widening the boy’s glutes and creating love handles like storage tanks of lard. Gray was loving every second of it, adamant that he had at last found his perfect opposite to love and cherish.
As the weeks wore on and Callum returned from a brief late summer break at home, his  body looked increasingly awkward to behold. His stomach began to look like a great balloon was inflating inside it, and his soft, swelling chest seemed out of place alongside his still skinny arms. His butt had packed on vast amounts of softness, widening it just a little less than the outpouring of love handles above, yet his long legs and comparatively small thighs looked as if they were struggling to keep up with the pace of expansion.
At some point, it seemed as if Callum had let go. The humid, late summer heat had thoroughly defeated him and he began walking around without a shirt for most of the day, as Gray had been doing since the middle of April. He made less of an effort to hide his overeating and allowed Gray to do more for him out of the station. Given the frequency with which they had sex, he’d become acustomed to having his fatty flesh touched and didn’t seem as shocked by the way his body jiggled as Gray took him from behind. He’d had a falling out with his family during the break and had returned with an increased sense of independence, seeming to rid himself of all of the healthy eating values he had once insisted upon.
By the time the first snow hit the ground, Gray could hardly get over how much Callum had grown out. Now, when the full moon appeared, he didn’t even need to sleep through it, despite acquiring an even more ravenous appetite than usual; beginning roughly three days before. On these days, Callum felt compelled to eat so much that he could barely get himself off the couch; with Gray catering for most of his needs out of a profound sense of guilt and lust.
“Listen, Gray. We’re not so happy with how things are working out with Callum,” explained Gina, the overall manager for the park rangers. “I’m not sure he’s quite suited to being deployed in such a remote station.”
“He’s doing great!” Gray immediately shot back down the phone in his lover’s defense. “He loves it out here!”
“He’s not very productive though, is he?” Gina countered. “I can see by your location that you’re the one out collecting his research data for him.
Gray hated how easily the higher-ups could check up on them both. It was easy to believe that you were completely free out here, yet the subtle reminders that there was a careful eye watching over them was sometimes almost too much to bear. “What are you trying to say?” Gray asked, deciding that he was done beating around the bush.
“We need to make cost cuts and Callum is reaching the end of his probationary period,” Gail stated without a hint of remorse. “We’ve decided that we won’t be renewing his contract.”
Gray’s nostrils flared. “If you fire him, I’m walking,” he declared, feeling pumped and ready for a fight. He never could have imagined himself putting his livelihood on the line like this for anyone else before now. Yet, there it was; his ultimatum delivered to his boss who, unfortunately for him, didn’t seem to believe a single word he said.
Driving back, Gray wondered how long it would be until Callum was told he was being fired. In his mind, he imagined all the different ways that Gail would do it; cutting Callum off from the career he had longed for ever since he was a kid. Perhaps that was why Gray didn’t detect the signs of an intruder until he came right up to the mountain station and saw the truck parked up across the front in the most arrogant of fashions.
His heart racing, but with a determination to remain cool, Gray tried hard to take his time and casually make his way up the stairs. Through the window, he saw the sickening, grinning, tormenting face of Ash, a werewolf from across the border of Gray’s defined territory. It’d been ten years since their fight in wolf form. Gray had lost huge areas of the land he had once roamed upon a full moon and Ash would always show up every couple of years or so, crossing their boundary as only he was permitted to do.
If posible, Ash’s smug face was even more sickening than usual. Clearly invited inside by a swollen Callum, Ash appeared bemused, watching the fat boy trotting around, getting him one of Gray’s beers. He looked across at Gray, knowing exactly what was going on between them. He would have picked up the scent of Gray all over Callum’s blubbery physique.
“Well, well, well, look who’s finally showed up,” Ash smirked as Gray came through the door.
“Callum, go take the truck out to fix the fencing by the cliffs,” Gray ordered, deciding to be deliberately gruff with his lover in a futile attempt to conceal their relationship. In reality, he needed Callum out of there as soon as possible.
“You’re fucking that fatty?” Ash laughed a few minutes later, as soon as Callum was gone. “I know you tried to turn him into a wolf. You know my rule: if they can’t take the curse, we rip out their throats under the light of the full moon.”
Gray growled, letting his animalistic side show through. His stance changed and he was ready for a fight, should Ash initiate one. “I won’t let you do that,” he declared aggressively.
Ash simply smirked and took a large swig from the beer Callum had got for him before he left; Gray’s beer. “Try and stop me,” he smiled. “I dare you!” Then he laughed, knowing that Gray would not risk their decade-long pact. At least, not yet.
Ash had decided to stick around in order to declare his dominance before the full moon on Saturday. He camped out a little lower down the stream and returned each day to chat with Callum whenever Gray had to go off and do errands. The purpose of those visits were purely for the joy of seeing Gray’s face once he returned and saw him sipping yet another beer on his couch; then having to stifle the anger that he felt so that Callum didn’t ask too many questions.
“So what are your plans for Sunday?” Ash asked the chubby Callum, as he stuffed his face in the kitchen. Then that intruding wolf turned and smirked across at Gray, making the man’s anger boil his blood. Ash’s meaning had been clear to him: Callum would be dead as soon as the sun set and the full moon rose in the sky on Saturday night.
Even in his human form, Gray wasn’t strong enough to take Ash on. Considerably older and more powerful, despite his fresh-faced appearance. Last time, Ash had nearly killed him without taking on as much as a scratch himself. Even so, as soon as they transformed on Saturday night, Gray knew he was going to have to try. He couldn’t let Callum be taken away from him. Not now.
“Are you okay?” Callum suddenly asked Ash, looking across with concern.
Gray stood to attention, wondering what game the wolf was playing now, as the pot bellied Callum took a step closer, attempting to steady Ash on his feet. “I’m fine!” Ash growled violently, letting his true self slip, just for a moment in front of Callum.
“You looked like you were about to faint,” Callum stated, studying Ash’s appearance even more and noticing the sweat on his forehead. They had all done the first aid training. They all knew the signs.
“No I didn’t!” Ash rumbled back, although with slightly more composure now. He glanced across at Gray for a split second, hoping that the other wolf had not seen his momentary weakness. Wolves didn’t get sick. Not ever. “I’ve got things to do,” he complained, storming off in what appeared to be a foul mood.
Ash did not arrive to torment them the next day and Gray’s keen ears had heard very little movement from him further down the stream. Innocent Callum had wanted to go and check on him, without even appreciating the danger he was in. By the Friday, even Gray’s curiosity had gotten the better of him, sneaking over to find the wolf’s camp completely silent. With a pounding heart, he gently brushed away some of the snow from the night before and unzipped the tent to get a look inside. He needn’t have worried, Ash was indeed inside, but he was fast asleep, seemingly trapped within a great fever that made his face glisten with sweat. Even then, Gray allowed himself to imagine the possibilities of what this could mean, but he did not dare to believe it to be true.
As he transformed the following evening, Gray stood guard over Ash’s camp, waiting. The moon was strong, flooding into the small, cold tent as the muscular man lay asleep within. For the first time in nearly fifty years, Ash’s body had remained in its human form under the full moon.
“What’s got you looking so pleased with yourself?” Callum asked as he loaded his plate with several rounds of fresh buttery toast that Sunday morning.
“Oh, you know…” Gray smirked, throwing himself down on the couch. “I’m just sitting here, admiring my beautiful boy as he gets ready for his day,” Gray sang in a tone that would have been completely alien to him before he met Callum.
“Well, I’m glad one of us is happy,” Callum sighed in reply. “I had an email whilst you were out last night, explaining that my contract will not be renewed next Spring.”
“Good,” Gray smiled back, seeing that his response had caught Callum a little off-guard. He stood. “We need a change, you and me. It’s the perfect opportunity for us to try something new.” He embraced the fat boy side on, sliding a hand under his bulging stomach and wrapping his big arm around his shoulders as the boy continued to eat from his plate. “You deserve a better life than I can give you out here. You deserve the best.” He kissed Callum’s buttery lips. “Imagine it. Real restaurants. Real fast food joints, and proper beers!”
“I thought you never wanted to leave this place?” Callum asked inquisitively.
“Well, things change,” Gray smiled. He sat again and laughed, imagining Ash’s reaction upon waking up and realising that whatever cocktail of pheremones and antibodies coursed through Callum’s body, his time spent alone with Callum that week had allowed his own body to acquire the same resistance to the wolf curse. Unlike Gray, his time as a wolf was now over. In a single night, Gray’s territory had more than doubled simply because Callum was part of his pack, leaving his body unchanged by the influence he clealy had upon others. He could survey the entirity of these many snow-covered mountains, the ravines and forests, seeing no end to his lands. And he could do that again, and again; werewolf after werewolf, leaving behind an ever fattening trail of fresh immunity. A world without end or borders.
“You’d really do that for me?” Callum smiled, touched and smitten with love as he stood, looking down on his lover and feeding himself with glistening, butter-drenched toast.
Gray smiled back, rubbing his doughy lover’s glutes with glee from his position on the couch. They felt larger than ever that morning. How perfect. How big and fat and round he could make Callum now. His body was the perfect lardy production house for all of those antibodies that would grant Gray everything he had ever wanted.
“For you, anything," Gray grinned, realising that his fat little piggy had just become the best meal ticket a wolf could ever imagine.

Enchanted to Meet You: Part 1
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

MEET MY OC
New York City was wide awake when Sayuri was burning past the midnight oil. No slumbering eye was spared from the bright evening lights, the hustlers were still chasing their dreams on the streets, and the cars didn’t seem to stop for anything. Sayuri breathed in deeply, the city didn’t smell good but ever since she got here she has always felt a presence of energy that convinced her that she needn’t to sleep at all. Six months since, and this presence remained.
She got up from her makeshift workspace on her balcony and elected to lean against the railing. She was aware that America was going to be a whole new frontier, but she never imagined that things would be so different. She began to miss her family home. In stark contrast to this bustling epicenter of the world, instead of ambitious bulidings, there were cedars and maples so old that they were witness to her ancestors. Every person in this city was a stranger, while every person in her hometown was an old friend. The pace and gait of every matter here was hurried, but time seemed slower in her youth. And the silence… oh the silence… you could only hear the murmur of the leaves, the hum of the cicadas in the summer, and the reverence of mountains mighty.
She missed her grandmother’s weathered hand against her cheek and the fragrance of her cooking. She missed her grandfather’s kind smile, and his tight embraces. She looked back towards her computer. There was work to be finished and she can already hear her grandmother’s stern voice, scolding her to stop slacking around and get it done. Sayuri chuckled, and began to shuffle through her flashcards on electrolyte lab values.
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
Leo needed to get out of the Lair. With brothers of a flammable temperament, an annoying sense of humor, and an extremely imaginative mind, it was only a matter of time before a literal explosion occurred and he preferred to steer clear of it. The lack of assignments from the NYPD hasn’t been helping either, and with April and Casey on their Southeast Asian escapade, it was safe to say that everyone was bored and their extended time together has tensions running high. It has been three years since the Kraang invasion and the beginning of their partnership with the police. While Leo liked that they were being compensated now for their protection and cooperation and the cases did have its challenges, he can’t help but feel that he had reached a plateau in his life. Then again, when you’re a mutant turtle, life has a way of being naturally chaotic when you least expect it.
He strayed from midtown and began entering the Upper East Side apartments. It was a quieter part of Manhattan, and Leo often frequented the neighborhood whenever he felt a bit more overwhelmed than usual. He sat down at a random edge, overlooking Central Park. Just as he was about to cross his legs and slip into meditation, a rambling voice caught his ear.
“…Potassium range is… 3.5-5.2 mEq/L for adults and 3.4-4.7 mEq/L for kids… and my god do I really need to remember all this symptoms?! もういいよ!疲れたなー!”
It drew him to the edge of the rooftop and he slid silently into a fire escape at the side of a building. Right across from his line of sight his eyes met beheld her for the very first time…and she was ethereal. The terrapin leaned forward for a glance of the stray dark hairs that grazed her pale cheek. His eyes wandered across the bony prominences on her chest and shoulders. He breathed slowly as he watched her delicate fingers dance across the keyboard or when she caught them between her teeth. And her eyes… oh those eyes so lost in thought… when she looked so far into the night of the city her eyes were gleaming, iridescent pools of silver illuminated by all the lights. It was as if a drum was beating in his ears and another one was thundering against his plastron. There was no longer a plateau, only revelations. And every night, Leo snuck out to bear witness to them.
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
Three weeks has passed since she first started studying at the balcony and Sayuri couldn’t help but feel that she was being watched. It was not comfortable, but it was not in an eerie sense either. She’s always possessed a strong intuition. So naturally, as a child, she was proficient at hide-and-sneak and guessing games. Especially when it came to finding her grandmother’s stash of secret sweets. That night, Sayuri stayed inside and dimmed down the lights. She decided to work on her dining room table, facing the glass sliding door to the balcony. It was not as if she was expecting anything to happen, after all it was only a feeling, and feelings are as easily passing as they were occurring. But when Sayuri returned from her kitchen past midnight after making herself a cup of tea, she surely believed that the sight before her was simply a figment of her imagination… He appeared to be a turtle with a stance of a man, standing six feet tall behind her glass sliding door, staring right at her.
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
He couldn’t move. He couldn’t even breathe. It was as if there was a disconnect between his mind and his body and he couldn’t make sense of any of it. Should he wave and mouth a ‘hello’? Should he knock on her door? What if she totally freaked out and became a shut-in forever just because of him? Should he just lay there on her balcony and just shrivel up in utter embarrassment? Since the latter wasn’t an option, he fled. So swiftly that Sayuri wondered if he was ever real at all.
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
For weeks, Leo did not dare to return.
And every night Sayuri remained at her balcony, toiling away at the hours until she stood up from her table for one final time of the night and looked out into the city. She didn’t know what she was looking for, but she was desperate to find it.
Will definitely post a part two soon! Please reblog and leave a like if you enjoyed it!

블루의 이사 (2)
Blue’s Move (2)
The car made a wide loop around the facilities that were still under construction. Once we received the approval necessary to make use of the mountain, a road would be built to connect the two. The place where the artificial lake would be was still only marked. Having appeared at some point, Blue flew after our car.
“There’s a lot of anticipation from the training center's side, too.”
Moon Hyuna said, once the car came to a stop in the parking lot of the high-ranking Hunter training center.
“Since flying-type monsters are difficult to deal with.”
“Certainly, they’re difficult to even approach. Even just being able to observe should be a great help. On top of that, Blue is a griffon, so she has traits that are characteristic of terrestrial monsters as well.”
Essentially, it meant that they’d be able to safely engage in simulated battle with an S-rank monster. Using that as a pretext, we were able to easily gain permission and support for the construction of the new rearing facility. Blue would get new playmates, and the Hunters would get good training opportunities. It was killing two birds with one stone.
“Of course, the kids getting hurt absolutely won’t be permissible.”
Though, at least when it came to Blue, there was a low probability of injury under usual circumstances. As we walked into the training center, a handful of Hunters who recognized us hailed us as we entered. As Blue descended towards the training grounds, gazes filled with curiosity slid towards her.
“Please take good care of our Blue, going forwards.”
Having been told that our child was energetic and enjoyed playing with people, one of the Hunters stepped forward.
“Would it be alright if we played with her now, then?”
“Yes, of course. Only, there are times when she may be a little rough in her approach. Though, as you are high-ranking Hunters, it is unlikely to be to the point where you may get seriously injured.”
“Something like minor injuries are, of course, commonplace.”
How tough. Holding a long training-use staff that lacked an edge, the Hunter approached Blue. Cawing enthusiastically, Blue clamped onto the staff and tugged. While the two were contesting their strength, another Hunter squeezed into the fray. As the Hunter lunged at Blue, trying to put her in a lock,
퍽!
“Ugh!”
They were smacked by a large wing and sent rolling on the ground. Immediately bouncing back upright, the Hunter gamely pounced on Blue again. Blue, who was simply enjoying all of the excitement, snapped her tail around like a whip this time.
She was playing well, our Blue.
“Look at your expression, as though anyone could mistake you as not being the kids’ dad.”
“It’s a heart-warming scene.”
Moon Hyuna shook her head, before abruptly lowering her voice.
“Do you happen to be aware that the old geezers on our side can’t stand the sight of the young master as of late? They’d assumed that it would naturally be Breaker lined up after MKC, but then Haeyeon went and burst through the ranks instead.”
Before, it had been Seseung, MKC, and Breaker. No one had come out and said it outright, but 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place had been clearly established. In 4th place had been Hanshin, and Haeyeon had been the newly-admitted newcomer guild that rounded out the top five at 5th place.
“With talk about seeing Haeyeon coming right after Seseung now floating around, it seems like they’re quite displeased. There’s even been noise about coming to an agreement to cooperate with Hanshin.”
Moon Hyuna scowled, saying that it would end up with her getting burned in the crossfire as well.
“There’re even some who’re comparing me and Yerimie. I’d been planning on going to Japan to spectate anyway, but now they’re kicking up a fuss about showing my face on TV at the very least, and then intentionally provoking a fight so as to ‘pick up’ a second Korea-versus-Japan match… Ah, for real.”
Some things that children shouldn’t hear briefly flew out. That she was pissed was understandable. It really would be good to be able to cause an upset, somehow.
“Even if Hunter guilds place much importance on S-rank Awakened, in terms of scale, Haeyeon is still fairly small.”
Though it would be expanding soon enough.
“It’s because there’re more people who view the rearing facility as a package deal. It’s tied by blood, after all. If the Guild Leader and the Director are brothers who cling to each other like so, then it’s as good as over.”
At her mention of your inordinately affectionate relationship, I unconsciously turned to look at Yoohyunie. But even then, it wasn’t like we could intentionally pretend that we were on bad terms. Even now, my dongsaeng was someone who would smile at me reflexively, just like that. And on top of that, we even lived together. …this situation really could be misunderstood, huh.
Haeyeon’s Guild Leader and his hyung are cohabiting, wasn’t official knowledge. Yoohyunie’s residential address was still listed as being the Haeyeon Guild residence. But because he’d been spotted leaving several times on his way to work, everyone who was in the know, probably already knew.
Telling him to leave our home, was absolutely off the table. Ugh, whatever. It was a case of them having been brought down alongside the balance that had shattered, when one of those giant guilds saying ‘we will maintain neutrality’ in the midst of those other top guilds happened to break apart. That MKC would end up declining this quickly was something I couldn’t have predicted, either.
“Whenever the fancy to overthrow those pests who cling onto your ankles strikes you, please feel free to let me know at any time. We’ll be happy to proactively cooperate with you.”
“Don’t entice me too much, Director Han.”
It wouldn’t be easy to end those entanglements without backlash, Moon Hyuna said with a bitter smile.
“I’ll come see you often, Blue.”
- 꺄우.
Brushing my hand along from her beak to her nape, I shared a farewell with Blue. After looking at me intently for a moment, Blue went back to the other Hunters and began playing again. It seemed like she would be just fine, so I felt a great deal more at ease. And it wasn’t like the distance was too far, anyway.
Leaving the training center, we headed towards not the rearing facility, but Haeyeon Guild instead. It was so that we could bring over the remaining baby monsters that were being raised at Haeyeon.
---
As we pulled into the Haeyeon Guild parking garage, it so happened that Yerimie was on her way out as well. Having been made over from head to toe, and her expression infused with bright excitement, she sparkled even more than usual. It wasn’t only her feelings that were light and airy, but her actual self as well, and she zoomed right on over to me.
“Ahjussi! Have you bought your swimsuit?”
“...ah? No, I.”
I wasn’t even good at swimming, to begin with. Since running Dungeons meant that there might be circumstances where I’d be submerged, I’d at least learned how to float. At hearing that I hadn’t bought one, Yerimie’s lips stuck out in a pout, like a duck.
“That’s why I kept saying to go buy some together! But since I have another interview, and have to leave.”
Yerimie turned to look at Yoohyunie, who was standing beside me.
“Guild Leader-nim, take responsibility and get him prepared. If he’s left to his own devices, then ahjussi is definitely going to sit there feigning ignorance until we actually have to leave, yeah?”
“It’s September now to begin with, Yerim-ah.”
It might still be on the hotter side, but wasn’t it a bit too late to be playing in the water. I didn’t know what Japan’s weather was like, but since it was nearby, wouldn’t it be somewhat similar.
“No worries. The hotel’s outdoor pool is heated, so we can play outside even if it’s the middle of winter. Or, I can just heat up the ocean.”
“What do you mean, just. Of course that’s not allowed.”
At the very least, the eastern sea was off limits. I’d intentionally asked for the match to take place more towards the Pacific Ocean because of that, too. Just in case.
“Anyway, ahjussi—five sets of swimsuits, minimum!”
“...what?”
“And buy new clothes to wear on the trip, too, and sunglasses and a hat. One with a brim this big—ah, I think there’s one from the ones I bought yesterday that’ll be okay, I’ll give that one to ahjussi!”
Yerimie said, both arms flung wide. It was surely exaggerated, but wasn’t it too big. Instead of a hat, wasn’t it an umbrella. Saying that they would be late, her attendant urged Yerimie along.
“Make sure to buy them today, okay!”
Don’t you forget, Guild Leader-nim! said Yerimie, climbing into her car. Yoohyunie, who had been stoically listening to all of Yerimie’s nagging, turned to me and spoke.
“Should we go buy them together after we’ve finished moving the baby monsters?”
“There’s no need for that. It’s just my stuff that needs to be bought, so there’s no need for you to go through the trouble. And it’s not like I really need to buy them, either.”
They would be provided, right. Wouldn’t they be?
“I don’t have any, either.”
“You don’t? Really?”
I’d thought he’d obviously have some, so it was a surprise. Then again, there wasn’t really an occasion where he’d wear a swimsuit and go swimming, it seemed like. Then, would we have to go and buy some. But I really hadn’t been thinking of playing in the water at all.
‘...and honestly, it’s a bit embarrassing.’
How should I put it--it would end up drawing a comparison, right. I was immensely proud of my dongsaeng, personally, who was splendid in many ways, but having to strip where others could see… was mortifying. Since, though I was still the hyung, I was noticeably lacking.
‘On top of that, Noah and Myungwoo are supposed to come too, and Sung Hyunjae will be there as well. If all three of them……’
Erk, ack. Definitely not possible. Even if Yerimie were to forcibly drag me to the swimming pool, I’d have to keep all my clothes on.
“Hyung?”
“Um, yeah. I’ll contact you once the rearing facility clean-up is done. Let’s go shopping together.”
Even so, we still had to buy Yoohyunie’s at least.
After sending off my dongsaeng, I headed towards Haeyeon Guild’s monster rearing grounds. As, rather than building a separate rearing area, it was simply two of the below-ground training rooms that had been emptied and populated with pens, it felt somewhat shabby in comparison. But the care that went into the baby monsters was thorough. They were walked and exercised every day as well, I was told.
“Then, will everything be moved to the rearing facility?”
The handler who was in charge of Haeyeon’s baby monsters spoke up.
“Since there are only five of them. And they’re not very large, either. In addition to the griffon being moved this time, the female dragon and the unicorns will reach maturity soon as well, which means that we will have plenty of space still.”
---
Of course Comet, and soon Hayang-ie and Kkamang-ie, were all due to be leaving the current rearing grounds. Then only Sorokie would be left. In the case of Velare, her size being what it was was one thing, but at least because of her poison, it would be difficult to leave her in the current kennel.
“Being moved to the rearing facility will be more beneficial for the monsters as well. If you feel so inclined, I will endeavor to put in a word so that you will be able to continue looking after the children.”
“Thank you.”
Apparently having grown fond of them in the meanwhile, the handler in charge brightened noticeably and nodded their head. I knew that emotion well. Even if they happened to be monsters, babies were cute.
“You may already be aware, but the five that are left are all A-rank monster young.”
The baby monsters that Haeyeon had hastily scrounged together from around the globe after finding out about my ability to raise monsters were one of the highest grade, and seven high-grade. The highest-grade one had been Blue, and the two of the remaining seven were Hayang-ie and Kkamang-ie.
“There are three of them staying in this room. Two among them are white-colored tree wolves.”
White Wood Wolf. Also known as ‘3W,’ it was a monster that was renowned in English-American countries. They appeared frequently in the Dungeons that appeared in those regions, and as they tended to move around in small packs, their intelligence also meant that it was common for an unprepared Hunter team to end up being toyed with them before ultimately facing annihilation. As their environment also happened to be a white forest, their skill at camouflaging meant that they were notorious for being difficult to deal with.
From an overseas broadcast of a Dungeon raid, tense background music accompanied by a shot of three center fingers spread had left a deep impression. The number three, and a ‘W’ shape. It was a famous call sign, one that signified that traces of a White Wood Wolf had been found.
- 그르릉.
- 갸르를.
Beyond the pen, white-furred puppies squeakily growled at each other as they bounded around. Puppies were puppies, after all, but as the white fur was thick and only the black nose and eyes starkly visible, they almost resembled a bear cub. How cute. Once they were fully grown, the nose would turn white, and the eyes would turn into a steel gray.
“Once it became known that they could be raised as mounts, we received several offers to buy them back.”
Of course, they had all been turned down, the handler laughed.
“As they are intelligent monsters who are also used to moving in a pack, beyond being simply useful as a mount, there is speculation that they will prove to be a great help in unlocking the potential of a team.”
A pair of great white wolves, incorporated into a Hunter team. Even just in imagination, it was splendid.
In a pen that was placed a little ways away from the wolf cubs’ own pen, was a sizable salamander that was curled in on itself. For a baby, it already had a fair amount of heft.
“This is the Winen Lake Lizard. Once fully grown, it reaches a size big enough for a person to ride, and is on the faster side—more than anything, its sturdiness was cited as making it a good candidate for protecting healers and support-types.”
Was it something like a portable fort, then. They were being simply rounded up under the umbrella of ‘mounts,’ but as much as monsters varied in type and Skill, so did their abilities and aptitudes also range widely.
The blue-scaled lizard lifted its head to look at me. It really was still a baby, so the rounded head shape was still pretty cute.
“Since there’s a pond up in the rooftop garden, would it be better to arrange for a different pen near that area instead?”
“Yes, certainly. As they’re solitary creatures, it will probably be more at ease when it’s left in isolation.”
When we moved to the next room, a baby ostrich and a baby lamb stared blatantly at us. The lamb was entirely black, so it looked just as though a thundercloud was roving around.
- 꾸익.
The baby ostrich poked its head through the grate, stretching out its neck, and opened its beak wide. The fluffy, downy wings flapped vigorously.
“It may look a bit pitiful, but it’s quick-footed when fully grown. Very agile.”
On top of the speed, its skill at evasion was great enough that Dungeon raids had failed from being unable to catch it, it seemed. But its attack power was on the weaker side for an A-rank monster. So it was mostly just the fleetness.
“The Volcanic Black Sheep—adorable, isn’t it. As the adult appearance is significantly different, at first, it was mistaken as a different species, instead of being a juvenile form. The appearance of such a seemingly weak monster in an A-rank Dungeon was remarkable, and was what spurred them to capture it in the first place.”
- 매애애.
As we approached, the baby lamb let out a small bleat. Its wool looked incredibly soft. I didn’t know how it’d grow up, but wouldn’t a lamb be good too. For Section Chief Song. It looked like your mood would automatically improve if you held it in your arms.
“The texture of its wool, is it pleasant?”
“Incredibly so. It’s absolutely amazing.”
Should I take it to the Awakened Management Center once. To have him at least try to touch it.
‘...though there’s been no response still, again.’
Even though they’d definitely said that the raid had ended this morning. I’d intentionally waited at least an hour after I’d heard the news to send a text, but I still hadn’t received any reply. Though it could be that he was busy, having just re-emerged. And one of Seseung’s Dungeon buildings had been sent flying, too.
Bringing the baby monsters along, we moved to the rearing facility. Leaving the lizard in the first floor pen for now, I headed up towards the rooftop garden to assess the pond, but.
- 꺄야꺅!
“...Blue-yah?”
A golden griffon that shouldn’t have been there flew down in front of me. After first nudging me with her beak, she looked at the Haeyeon monster handler with sparkling eyes.
“We met briefly when she was still a baby, could it be that she still remembers that? But, I seem to recall that you’d mentioned that Blue had been moved to the Gyeonggi-do rearing facility.”
“She had been, today.”
She’d moved, but here she was. At seeing Blue circle around me, my heart felt slightly melancholy. Even though you’d been playing so well, was it that this place was ‘home.’
“Blue-yah, but you’ll feel too stifled if you stay here.”
- 꺅.
“Your new house is way bigger, and you’ll be able to play as much as you want.”
How did I explain this to her, and how would I send her back. Just then, Blue flew straight into the air. Reaching an altitude where she turned into a mere dot in my sight in an instant, she soon disappeared.
“She doesn’t have a teleportation Skill, correct? How incredibly fast.”
The handler said admiringly. As someone who was in charge of handling high-rank baby monsters, they were at least B-rank in stats, but to think that even they’d be unable to see it clearly. She really was fast. I gazed blankly at the sky for a while. It was blue and clear.
‘...she’s not coming back.’
How far had she ventured. We waited a while longer, but Blue didn’t reappear again. This, was it perhaps. To confirm my doubts, I took out my phone and placed a call.
“Yes, is Blue over there, perhaps?”
When I asked Blue’s handler, who had gone over with her to the new facility, I was asked to wait a moment before a reply came back.
[ I’ve been informed that she headed over towards the training grounds. She seems to have taken a brief jaunt to the mountains.]
A jaunt… Hm. Replying in affirmative, I confirmed the distance between the Hunter training center and my present location. It took a long while by car, but cutting straight across produced a distance that was a little less than 50 kilometers. And since not even ten minutes had passed so far.
‘...could it be, that for Blue, this is about the same as a playground in front of your house?’(1)
Instead of being a move, was it just like saying a playground’s appeared near home, so go and play there, or well, something like that?
“Ah… It seems that Blue doesn’t seem to be quite aware that she’s moved. It appears that, for Blue, it simply feels too close by.”
I’d been planning to dismantle Blue’s home in the rooftop garden, but it seemed like I’d have to leave it be. It’d turned out that the move hadn’t really been a move, but it still made me a bit happy. Really, this punk.
-----
(1) i’m sure y’all had playgrounds around while growing up, but it’s a bit different in kr, specifically in an urban setting like Seoul, which is where sclass is set… due to the lack of space/infrastructure, the ‘distance between home and playground’ is more in line with ‘a playground that’s built for an apartment complex,’ with visual aids here and here. quite literally smack-dab in front of your nose(house), typically within a 5-10 min walking distance
hyj to mha: speaks ↑ | 해요체 (haeyo-che, casually polite)
mha to hyj: speaks ↓ | 해체 (hae-che, casually impolite/intimate)
+ when i mention that yoojin is ‘polite,’ it’s less in the sense of being ‘formal’ to people but more of being ‘proper’—a good parallel would be tanjiro from demon slayer, for example. still capable of getting worked up/rude when the situation calls for it, but very much a 유교보이 (‘conservative,’ but not in the US/western sense) otherwise. (really, it’s more being ‘confucian’ in attitude as it relates to a society with strict hierarchy, but i figured ‘conservative’ would get the gist across better for a western audience. this is why he makes asides like ‘things kids shouldn’t hear’ ‘sitting on tables shouldn’t be a done thing’ ‘it wouldn’t be okay for me to intrude into a women’s area’ (this ch + during ‘breaker guild’)) hence, speaking up to moon hyuna even when they would be considered close-ish as acquaintances/kind of friends, because of the age/status gap (aka giving her the ‘due respect’ he thinks she deserves)

i’m still somewhat delirious from getting sick after my conference trip, so thanks goes 2 my proofreader orvs for sitting down for an additional 3hrs to our usual 3-4hrs of proofreading so this doesn’t rot in a corner or smth like i wanted to let it :)

BLACKHAVEN — Town map and locations
Blackhaven is the seat of House Dondarrion in the southwestern region of the Stormlands. It is part of the Dornish Marches, located in the northern Red Mountains close to the Dornish border, north of the Wyl River.
1. Blackhaven castle: Located at the heart of the citadel. It serves as the household for House Dondarrion as well as for the majority of their employed staff.
2. Main plaza: A place for gatherings of all kinds, a place that is especially crowded on the seventh day of the week after the people leave the sept. Street food is often sold here and it isn’t rare for musicians to delight the crowds with their songs.
3. The sept: The seventh day of the week is devoted to the Seven and so the town’s sept is the main place for the people of Blackhaven to gather for prayer.
4. The park: The largest green area in the town. A space for leisurely activities and for taking a walk.
5. The theater: Plays have been performed here for nobles and smallfolk alike. It is most often used for tablaos to watch flamenco dancers and enjoy their traditional music.
6. The guilds: This area of the town encompasses the workshops and shops of the guilds of Blackhaven. A long time ago, before the common tongue was adopted in the town, the guilds received Euskera names based on their purpose or the main materials they used for their work. These groups were called “houses”, a tradition that remains to this day. The Blackhaven guilds are identified as follows:
House of Egurra: Carpenters, roofers, and plasterers Woodcarvers, coopers, and bowyers Wagon-makers and wheelwrights
House of Janari Cooks and bakers Brewers, distillers and vintners Farmers
House of Natura Alchemists and apothecaries Healers, midwives and nurses
House of Harria Jewelers and gem cutters Masons and stonecutters Potters and tile-makers
House of Metala Armorers, locksmiths & finesmiths Smiths and metal-forgers
House of Janzkera Cobblers and shoemakers Leatherworkers, skinners, and tanners Weavers and dyers
House of Idaztea Calligraphers, scribes, and scriveners Painters, limners, and sign-makers
7. Bazaar: Located within the guild district. A great variety of goods can be found here with the exception of food, which is sold in the market.
8. Market: Unlike the bazaar, the market is dedicated entirely to selling foods. The members of the House of Janari sell their goods here.
9. Lace district: The area of town where brothels are found as well as spaces for dance performances of a very mature nature.
10 & 11. The city jail (gallows) and the constabulary: Soldiers in Blackhaven can be divided into two branches: men who are trained for battle and the militant branch that oversees that law and order are upheld in the city who operate from the constabulary. For all intents and purposes, they are the city watch. They work under the jurisdiction of a commander at the service of House Dondarrion. The city jail and gallows are located close to their headquarters.
12 & 13. First and Second garrison: Training grounds and housing for the soldiers of Blackhaven.
14. Orphanage: A home that is run by a group of septas. They receive alms from the townspeople as well as a biannual donation from House Dondarrion. They receive basic education so they may successfully become members of society when they reach adulthood. When they come of age, they are welcomed to be employed at the castle, to pursue a craft with the guilds, join the military or devote themselves to the faith.
15, 16 & 17. Inns: There are three inns in town which vary in level of luxury and cost. Wingarde Inn and Brightsong Inn are considered affordable, offering basic accommodation. King’s Quarter Inn is far more expensive, offering a more lavish service and larger quarters as well as a private courtyard accessible only by guests.
18, 19, 20 & 21. Tarvens and pubs: Good food and good drinks can be found all across Blackhaven. The Desert Hawk and The Sandstorm are frequented by all sorts of people from every social class, be it guild members, workers from the lace district, soldiers, and even some visiting nobles who want a taste of Blackhaven without any veils of propriety. The Copper Cup is considered a more family-friendly space, and the meals that Genara, the cook, serves have the greatest of reputations. Lastly, The Saffron is a tavern for those of more exquisite taste, offering both local drinks and cuisine as well as some imported delicacies.

Took Aspen on a hike this morning!
He did really well! We went to a regional park, and ended up clocking about 4 miles.
My intention was to go to a lookout point. I got turned around; I’m not the best at navigation. When asking a friendly mountain biker for direction, he eyed Aspen and said there have been a lot of mountain lion and rattle snake sightings in that area. I don’t think Aspen would be a particularly easy meal for a mountain lion; but, I’m not going to risk a snake bite.
It was our first time out with the trekking poles. As expected, Aspen did not care one bit about them. It took a little coordination to move the poles around the leash. I figured out how to maneuver the leash with the tip of the pole—kind of proud of that! They are definitely helpful though! I have issues with balance when not attached to a dog; but, the poles definitely helped with balance going down hill and through larger puddles.
The park is shared with people on horseback as well. We saw one horse, from the car, driving into the park and I don’t think Aspen even registered it as a creature. Lots of horse poop though…
I’m really grateful for Uber Pets. Even though picking up a passenger with an animal is something drivers can opt-in to—and Aspen is by no means a service dog—I still get really nervous when the driver pull up. Especially when we’re coming off the trail and aren’t the cleanest of creatures.
I have to remember next time to bring some wipes for Aspen’s paws (and my poles). We also definitely have to work on cooperative care and getting him comfortable with me reaching for his paw from behind.
I’m glad we did it! I think Aspen’s needs were met and he was super happy to have attention from people at the trailhead. Being confident out in nature with my dog is something I’m always striving for, and we’re getting better every time.

Alex Kime - The Ultimate Guide to the Alaska Horsemen Trail Adventures
Tumblr media
Alex Kime and his daughter Gretchen founded Alaska Horsemen Trail Adventures in 1997 in Cooper Landing. Having explored the Kenai Peninsula on horseback for over three decades, Alex Kime brings a wealth of experience to the venture. Their services include guiding and packing across the Chugach National Forest and Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Apart from offering cabin rentals in a picturesque pioneer setting, the lodge in Cooper Landing provides horseback riding adventures, group retreats, and more.
Relocating to Alaska from Oregon in 1963 at 12, Alex witnessed the Great Alaska Earthquake the following year. In the 1970s, he was a truck driver on the Haul Road and contributed to the construction of the Great Alaska Pipeline to Prudhoe Bay. The 1980s saw him purchasing his first horse, Cyrano, with whom he delved into the backcountry of the Kenai Mountains.
Alex Kime's deepest passion lies in sharing the splendor of these backcountry trails, which were historically used by natives and pioneers. Alaska Horsemen is a tribute to the packers who originally navigated the Tustumena and Kenai Mountains on horseback. They invite everyone to join in an authentic adventure and become a part of the "Alaska Horsemen" legacy.
So, if you are looking for a one-of-a-kind Alaskan experience, look no further than the Alaska Horsemen Lodge. With its stunning location, welcoming atmosphere, and endless opportunities for adventure, this lodge truly embodies the spirit of the Last Frontier. Nurturing Healthy Minds and Bodies: The Intersection of Fun Family Event Ideas, School Trips, and Children’s Health
In today’s busy world filled with work, school, and countless activities, finding time to nurture healthy minds and bodies can be a challenge—especially for children. However, by thoughtfully integrating fun family events, enriching school trips, and basic children’s health tips into daily life, parents can foster holistic well-being and development. When these three components intersect, they reinforce one another to create an environment where children can thrive physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
Tumblr media
Fun Family Event Ideas
Quality time together as a family is essential for forming deep bonds and inspiring health and happiness in children. Fun family events provide opportunities for meaningful connection while creating joyful memories.
Creative DIY Projects
In the course of working on creative make and do activities all the family members can work together, find creative solutions to problems, and materialize the outcome they want. Using arts and crafts or simply baking, gardening and fixing things around the house helps build group spirit and feel proud of the results. The process of creating by following instructions, envisioning the results, and seeing the results develops the kid' imagination and cognitive abilities.
Outdoor Adventures
Besides visiting parks, trails, beaches, lakes, mountains, and a lot more natural gifts, we can get numerous benefits from it. Outdoor experiences like walking, biking, climbing, horse riding, boating and camping become inseparable from the real world, while physical exercise and playfulness get encouragement at the same time. Sport in sunlight, which contains vitamin D, is appropriate for doping young bodies. Bacteria that run around the earth help absorb in the immune system, and detachment from electronics is useful to stay from moments everywhere. The wide range of experiences and interesting challenges that come along with nature helps create stronger bonds between family members.
Game Nights
Indoor fun like family game nights also serve an important role. Board games, video games, charades, trivia, karaoke, and other interactive activities inspire laughter, friendly competition, and cognitive stimulation. Cooperating, communicating, negotiating rules, taking turns, and simply being silly are all essential social-emotional skills developed through play. Dedicated family time without distractions fosters strong interpersonal bonds.
Benefits of School Trips
Beyond the classroom, school trips grant students immersive learning experiences that stick with them for life. Exploring new environments and engaging material through diverse lenses promotes academic and personal growth.
Experiential Learning
By participating in trips to educational destinations like museums, botanical gardens, historical landmarks, and zoos, children can connect abstract classroom concepts to real-world examples. Seeing and touching objects, hearing stories, and empathizing with different perspectives bring static information alive. Students gain deeper insight that inspires critical thinking and additional curiosity.
Social Development
School trips are also opportunities for children to bond with peers and teachers by collaborating to navigate experiences. Group challenges foster communication, leadership, inclusiveness, and conflict resolution. Younger children learn to follow instructions, while older ones practice independence and responsibility. Practicing social skills in fresh settings helps children adjust behavior based on context—a key developmental milestone.
Broadening Perspectives
Exploring new places, especially those with cultural, religious, ethnic, or socioeconomic diversity, exposes children to alternate worldviews. Through guided activities and thoughtful discussion, students can expand cultural awareness and develop empathy. Broadened perspectives help combat stereotyping, prejudice, and close-mindedness. Trips grant life-long memories that remind children how people’s lived experiences shape their realities.
Children’s Health Tips
While fun family outings and school trips provide developmental support, sufficient sleep, nutritious food, and regular exercise create the foundation. By instilling healthy habits early, children reap benefits spanning their lifespan.
Balanced Nutrition
Providing minimally processed whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and lean proteins ensures children get vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, healthy fats, and other nutrients vital for proper growth and function. Variety prevents nutritional deficiencies and picky eating. Occasional treats are fine, but the focus should remain on incorporating colorful, wholesome foods at most meals.
Regular Physical Activity
Exercise provides endless physical and mental health benefits for children. Aim for at least 60 minutes of heart-pumping moderate to vigorous activity daily to build strong muscles and bones, improve cardiovascular health, boost immunity, enhance sleep, sharpen focus, and alleviate anxiety and depression. This can include structured sports, dance classes, family bike rides, playground romps—anything that gets kids moving, playing, and having fun.
Investing in the Well-Being of the Next Generation
Keeping a happy medium while engaging both tiring work and carefully teaching children how to keep healthy is difficult but should be done. Parents and teachers can both help holistic development if they blend these activities into fun family activities, meaningful school trips, and the regular routine of wellness strategies. Having the joy of joint adventures is a way of building strong relationships and nice memories that will last forever while seeing different kinds of environments and people is a way to cultivate the mind and be open-minded. By the establishment of thorough good practices involving food, physical activity and sleep, young people are set up for success in the future. The children are the future, and that is why we must put the interests of the child first and foremost. Through our refined vision and work we can create good children who are happy, normal, and have what it takes to make the world better.

Why is Dubai's fresh water supply important?
Water is necessary for every living creature on Earth to survive. Almost all of human needs—such as those for food, fuel, clothes, and medicine—are met by it. Due to its susceptibility, the United Arab Emirates' freshwater resources are among the rarest in the world and are currently exhausted. There aren't any permanent natural rivers or lakes. Rather, we live mostly off the rain that falls from the Hajar Mountains, which supplies water to the wadis and buried canyons throughout the year. Due to the depletion of natural sources, the Dubai fresh water supply is currently experiencing difficulties. Thirty years ago, freshwater came entirely from natural sources for our needs. Nowadays, the majority of our water comes from desalination.
Tumblr media
This is partially due to the rapid rise in demand brought on by urbanisation and population expansion. But there has also been a decline in availability because of things like altered weather patterns, low precipitation, high evaporation, excessive groundwater usage for farming, and maintenance of parks, gardens, and forests.
In response to the approaching scarcity of water, a multitude of desalination and dam construction projects have been implemented. Regretfully, these treatments also pose a risk to the environment. Dams harm wildlife habitats because they disrupt the natural order and cause droughts. Desalination is an environmentally dangerous process that harms marine life and speeds up climate change.
Tumblr media
Thus it is a situation that no one can afford to take lightly if we are to preserve our way of life and protect the multitude of species that inhabit the area around our freshwater supplies.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) makes great efforts to boost international cooperation and assistance for developing countries in water and sanitation-related projects and activities, such as water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling, and technology reuse. Dubai likewise struggles with a lack of freshwater supply to ships. Companies such as Sea Sail Shipping LLC are now providing ships in the UAE with Dubai's fresh water supply.

National Take a Hike Day
There’s a lot that could be said about Take a Hike Day, but it seems that this excerpt from Cheryl Strayed’s book, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail says it all just perfectly.
History of Take A Hike Day
Take a Hike Day was established by the American Hiking Society with the hope of encouraging individuals, groups of families and friends to get out into the wild and really get a taste of what it means to be away from it all again. Hiking is something that consistently helps to rebuild the human connection with nature, and also aids in maintaining healthy hearts and bodies as well.
Hiking should not be an affair that a person rushes through. However, it should also not be a journey that a person goes through idly with very little sense of purpose. Instead, a person should listen to their heart and body: when restlessness strikes head out for the distant hills, and when weariness sets inlet the body rest and take in the environment.
Take A Hike Day was created to remind everyone that humans are creatures of the wild as well as creatures of civilization, and sometimes it does that wild heart good to be taken home again and get out into the depths of nature.
National Take a Hike Day Timeline
1804 Lewis and Clark start on their famous expedition
Setting out from St. Louis, Lewis and Clark with a team of 40 make their way toward the Pacific Ocean in 18 months.
1901 Vice President Teddy Roosevelt hikes Mount Marcy
While there was no actual trail, the VP of the US takes a famous hike and by the time he gets down the mountain, he discovers that President William McKinley has died from a gunshot wound.
1916 National Parks are established in the US
Initiated by US President Woodrow Wilson, the US National Parks Service is created to protect natural places where people often hike.
1921 Appalachian Trail is proposed
This trail is imagined from Georgia to Maine, passing through 14 different US states. It will take 16 years to complete the trail.
1938 REI is started in Seattle
This famous company that supplies hiking gear is organized as a consumer cooperative so people can become members and share.
How to Celebrate Take A Hike Day
The great thing is that the best suggestion for celebrating this day is contained right there in the name! Buzz off, get out, go away, take a hike! But that’s not all, other ideas for honoring and observing this day can be conjured up as well:
Take a Hike to a New Place
There are a million places to go on a hike, from your own backyard to the highest peaks in far-flung and exotic locations. When you hike, be sure to take note of the beautiful and magnificent surroundings, from the towering trees overhead to the secret and elusive critters that live in mountain streams and in distant glades. Hikes were made to commune with nature, and noticing it is the first step. Don’t be in a hurry!
Most people would be surprised at just what can be found by looking under the canopy of a tree, or with a quick glance under a bush. Take A Hike Day is the ideal opportunity to reconnect with the fundamentally important things in life: the fresh air, blue sky, and deep rich earth underfoot.
Learn Safety Tips for Hiking
While Take a Hike Day can certainly be loads of fun, it’s also important to use the brain and follow certain safety guidelines so that the hike ends in delight rather than a visit to the emergency room. This is especially important because getting away from it all also means getting away from easy access to medical care!
In addition to having the proper gear, such as boots and socks, consider these important tips for staying safe and comfortable during a hike:
Stay Hydrated
Hike with a Friend
Create an Itinerary
Prepare for weather
Bring a filled water bottle and sip on it throughout the hike. This is especially important on warmer days when dehydration is more likely.
Having a hiking buddy is ideal to be sure everything is okay. For a solo hike, make sure someone knows exactly where you’re headed and check in with them upon arrival.
Knowing where you are going is vital when hiking–and be sure to share it with someone outside the group, such as with the park ranger’s office. This helps in case someone gets lost or injured and a search party needs to be sent out.
Watch the weather forecast and take into consideration factors such as altitude, lightning, or rain. The heat of the sun is another important weather factor to be prepared for. Pack sun protection, rain gear, emergency shelter and a first aid kit.
Grab Some Friends for a Hike
Going on a short hike alone can be therapeutic and soothing. But when it comes to serious hiking, it’s best to have at least one buddy to journey with. Plus, the more the merrier! Choose a hiking buddy who moves at a similar pace, who appreciates nature in the same way, and who is able to either talk or be quiet as needed.
Don’t have a friend who likes to hike? Get connected with safe hiking groups by contacting the local park ranger for more information.
Join the American Hiking Society
Want to stay connected and keep apprised of the most important information regarding hiking? The American Hiking Society (AHS) might just be the place to go. Register on their website, join in with an affordable monthly membership, become a NextGen trail leader, participate as an ambassador, or get involved with a Volunteer Vacation. AHS offers plenty of opportunities to get hiking, as well as working to protect trails and advocate for hiking access.
National Take a Hike Day FAQs

XPoNential Festival – Wiggins Park – Camden, NJ – September 22-24, 2023
They say that the 10th anniversary is the tin anniversary, and the 50th anniversary is the gold anniversary. Unfortunately, for the 30th anniversary of the annual XPoNential Music Festival, it seems that it was the rain anniversary.
Mother Nature did not cooperate with the weekend of diverse musical acts jamming out at Wiggins Park in Camden, NJ. Tropical storm Ophelia was battering the East Coast that weekend, and while no major damage was inflicted on the Philadelphia tri-state area, the area was slammed with rain. This caused regular reshuffling of schedules for the Fest on Saturday and Sunday, and the cancellation of some of the acts – including Saturday night headliners Tegan and Sara.
Tumblr media
This was particularly a shame because this was the first time in years (if not ever) that there were not at least the last few bands on a couple of the nights playing down the street at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion, which is an amphitheater and at least partially enclosed and would have provided shelter from the storms.
However, the bands and the die-hard crowds for the most part were hearty sorts – sadly far heartier than this writer – and they often played on throughout the storms. I have to acknowledge up front that while I was looking forward to an entire weekend of good music, I ended up missing the entirety of Saturday’s sets and only was able to see one of the Sunday acts.
I actually sat in my car in the parking lot for about an hour Sunday afternoon in the hope that the rain would clear up enough to catch the Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers and Low Cut Connie sets, but the rain just never went away. Which is a shame, I have heard that Hornsby did a fascinating complete reinvention of his 1986 number one single “The Way It Is.”
Tumblr media
Friday, on the other hand, was pretty exceptional. I walked into the park at the very tail end of the performance by Nik Greeley and the Operators. I heard the last couple of songs from their set from across the park, where I went to the Marina Stage to await the start of the next act. They sounded good, I’m sorry I didn’t catch the whole thing.
Next up was Philly-based Don McCloskey. (McCloskey was born in nearby Bristol.) He played to the hometown, rocking a Phillies cap (the old-school one with the fat P!) to share that he was a homeboy. In the lazily milling crowd before he came up onstage, a guy next to me promised he was pretty terrific and put on a great show. The guy wasn’t wrong.
Tumblr media
He certainly had a big, rather tight eight-piece band, featuring himself on lead vocals and guitar, another guitarist, a bassist, a keyboardist, two percussionists and two female background singers. They were celebrating their latest album The Chaos and the Beauty, and his music was a mix of Americana, folk, rock and soul. He started out with a romp through the track “I IV V,” which opened with the evocative lyrics “There's gunshots outside my apartment / There's protests inside my head / Bullet holes in these worn-out clothes / Thank God you're in my bed.”
The drama was dialed down a bit with the more relaxed “Dre” and the somber confessional “Unbecoming.” Other standout tunes included “Kill the Lights,” “Son of it All” and “Welcome to the Fitness.”
Tumblr media
We next headed over to the River Stage, where Margo Price was about to come on. Price came onstage looking smart rocking a lacy white and gold jumpsuit and scarf. (I only mention her outfit because in the middle of her set she changed into a different one, a frilly red-and-silver cocktail dress.) Like McCloskey – and pretty much everyone else who plays on WXPN – Price offered a gumbo of spicy tunes and musical moods, crossing genres and styles with panache.
Tumblr media
Price brought the heat from the jump with her most recent album Strays’ atmospheric opening track “Been to the Mountain.” (She did announce that a Strays II was coming soon.) Then there was the frisky and poppy “Letting Me Down,” the bluesy “Change of Heart” (one of two songs Price played a scorching drum solo) and the sweetly devastated breakup song “That’s How Rumors Get Started.”
The guitar-based psychedelia of “Twinkle Twinkle” was another song in which Price’s playful connection with her crack band was noticeable. Then she rocked out to “Paper Cowboy” (the other song where Price shared drumming duties) and finally closed out on the alcohol-based medley of “Hurtin’ (On the Bottle)” matched with “I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink” and “Whiskey River.”
Tumblr media
Next up on the Marina Stage was Say She She – made up of singers Nya Gazelle Brown, Piya Malik, and Sabrina Mileo and a large backing band. They refer to their sound as “discodelic,” a musical tribute to ‘70s girl groups like The Pointer Sisters, High Inergy, The Three Degrees, LaBelle, Sister Sledge and Chic. (The band name is a fun nod to that last group, “C’est chi-chi!: It’s Chic!”)
They do rock the soul and dance vibes, adding their own subtle swing vibe to the mix. Their mostly matching outfits add to the disco vibes, shiny silver minidresses and boots which look tres ‘70s, and at the same time oddly timeless. That description not only refers to their fashion sense, but their music and their whole vibe, a fun, dance-based palette of throbbing beats and sweet harmonies.
Tumblr media
They did a terrific take on their recent single “C’est Si Bon” – a fun and frisky swinging dance track, which is NOT a cover of the Eartha Kitt jazz standard of the same name. The “delic” version of the “discodelic” descriptor shows up in “Astral Plane,” a sweet song riding on wah-wah guitars and cosmic vibes. Then there were the gorgeous Love Unlimited vibes of “Prism.”
The show also had a bit of extra, unexpected spectacle in the middle of Say She She’s set, when a random fireworks display suddenly appeared over the river, seeming to be coming from across the water in Philadelphia somewhere. I don’t believe it was specifically done for the music festival, although I’m not sure what it actually was for. (Was there a holiday that day which I forgot?) Still, it added a fun bit of pizazz to the show, although since the fireworks were behind Say She She’s audience at the Marina Stage, lots of people turned away from the performance to watch the fire in the sky. Then again, it added to the enjoyment to hear the stomping music backgrounding the fireworks.
Tumblr media
After they ended, back at the River Stage, Old Crow Medicine Show did a fun mix of originals and classic covers. These tributes included takes on The Band’s “The Weight” (for which they brought Margo Price back onstage to harmonize with them), a fun romp through Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary,” a combustible version of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire,” and an inspirational take on Hank Williams “I Saw the Light.” They also did a sweet version of “Margaritaville” in honor of Jimmy Buffett, who had just died a few weeks earlier. The performance of “The Weight” earlier was also a tribute to The Band’s recently deceased guitarist/songwriter Robbie Robertson, and “Proud Mary” was a nod to Tina Turner, who famously covered the song.
Old Crow has always been an intriguing mix of influences, an Americana string band that loves bluegrass, country, folk, and even a bit of rock. Or, as Wikipedia describes them: “With an old-time string sound fueled by punk rock energy, it has influenced acts like Mumford & Sons and contributed to a revival of banjo-picking string bands playing Americana music – leading to variations on it.”
Tumblr media
With decades of songs in their own catalogue, not to mention the aforementioned covers, the group did a deep dive into its songbook. They did a couple of songs from their current album Jubilee (the gospel tinged “One Drop” and the zydeco “Wolfman of the Ozarks). Older favorites include the frontier music of “Wagon Wheel,” the alt-country throwdown “Alabama High Test,” and the crazily entitled jug-band prison song “Brushy Mountain Conjugal Trailer.”
Sunday’s gigs (and undoubtedly Saturday’s, too) were all at the River Stage, because the Marina Stage was undoubtedly a soggy, muddy mess from all of the storms. This worked in some ways – no running around the park from stage to stage. Of course, it also had the disadvantage that it removed the constant flow of performances, because the stages couldn’t be reset for the new acts while someone else was playing. Still, this was necessary and a small price to pay. Well, it would have been a small price if not for the rain.
Tumblr media
The sun actually poked through in the early afternoon and the rain stopped long enough for Josh Ritter to get in his set. Of course, due to the weather uncertainty, his show was completely revamped, going from a full band set into a one-man acoustic gig. According to one of the festival workers near the stage, Ritter also threw away his old setlist and decided to make up a new setlist on the fly while performing. This gave the performance a sense of spontaneity that you don’t often see, so that was a really cool bonus.
Probably not coincidentally, Ritter started out his performance with a galloping strut through “Feels Like Lightning,” which seemed a bit fitting for the weather. Other standouts were an atmospheric run through “Henrietta, Indiana” and a fun cover of The Sweetback Sisters’ “Deputy Blues No. 2.” He also impressed with the sweet, devotional love song “Kathleen,” with its hopeful couplet, “I’ll be the one to drive you home, Kathleen.” He then closed his set out with the gorgeous “Someday” and the tongue-twisting “Getting Ready to Get Down.”
Tumblr media
After Ritter finished, while the roadies were setting up the stage for Allison Russell to start, the rain started again. At first it was just a little sprinkle, a bit annoying but definitely bearable. But soon enough it picked up speed and intensity, until everyone and everything was getting soaked. Sadly, this was pretty much the end of the festival for me, although as noted above I did shelter in place for a while in hopes that the rain would clear up again.
It never did, but while the weather shortened my weekend, it could not ruin the great vibe of music and fun that ruled the XPoNential Festival. And perhaps if I weren’t a bit of a diva (or if I were a little younger) I’d have braved the rains – like many other hardcore fans did – rather than going all Wicked Witch of the West (picturing myself shrieking “I’m melting! I’m melting!”) I would have gotten to experience more great music.
Still, even as a truncated experience, the 30th XPoNential Music Festival was a whole lot of great music and fun, I’m looking forward to year 31, hopefully with clearer skies.

Etymology
The name Guyana is believed to have originated from the indigenous Amerindian language, specifically the Arawak tribes who inhabited the region before the arrival of European settlers. The term "Guiana" referred to "land of water" or "water's edge" in Arawak, describing the plentiful rivers and lush rainforests that characterize the region. During the 16th century, Spanish explorers referred to the area as "Guayana," a variation of the Arawak term. The Dutch later colonized the region, naming it "Nieuw Guyana" or "New Guiana." In 1831, the British seized control of the region and consolidated it with their other South American territories to form British Guiana. After gaining independence from Britain in 1966, the country was officially named the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, reflecting its diverse population and commitment to unity. Today, the country remains a melting pot of indigenous, African, Indian, Chinese, and European influences, with a rich history and culture that reflects its unique heritage and heritage.
History
Located on the northern coast of South America, Guyana has a rich and diverse history dating back thousands of years. The first inhabitants of the region were indigenous tribes, including the Arawaks and Caribs. During the 16th century, the Spanish were the first Europeans to explore the region that is now Guyana, but they did not attempt to settle the area. It was not until the Dutch arrived in the early 17th century that European colonization began in earnest. The Dutch established a series of trading posts along the coast and brought in slaves from Africa to work on plantations. In the late 18th century, Britain gained control of the region from the Dutch, and in 1814, the colony of British Guiana was officially established. The British continued to use enslaved labor until its abolition in 1838. Guyana remained a British colony until 1966 when it gained independence. Throughout its history, Guyana has been shaped by the interplay of various cultures, including Indigenous, African, Indian, Chinese and European cultures. Today, the country remains ethnically diverse, with a rich cultural heritage that is celebrated through its music, dance, festivals, and food. Major Events in Guyana's History Year Event 1498 Christopher Columbus visits the region 1616 The Dutch found the colony of Essequibo 1762 The British capture the Dutch colonies of Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice 1834 Slavery is abolished in British Guiana 1928 The British Guiana Labour Party (BGLP) is founded 1966 Guyana gains independence from Britain 1980 Guyana becomes a republic Despite its small size, Guyana has played a significant role in regional and global politics. It has been a member of the United Nations since 1966 and has also been a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) since its establishment in 1973. Today, Guyana is known for its efforts to protect its unique ecosystems and cultural heritage, as well as for its vast reserves of natural resources such as gold, diamonds, and timber. One of its most prominent features is the Guiana Shield, which is a vast area of ancient rock formations that extends throughout much of South America. In Guyana, the Shield covers nearly 75% of the country's land area and provides a foundation for a diverse range of ecosystems and wildlife. Another notable geological feature of Guyana is the Kaieteur Falls, which is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world. The waterfall is located in the heart of Guyana's rainforest, and it drops a staggering 741 feet into a gorge below. The Kaieteur Falls is not only a breathtaking natural wonder but also an important source of hydroelectric power for the country. Guyana also has a variety of other waterfalls, including the Orinduik Falls and the King George VI Falls. the country is home to numerous rivers, such as the Demerara River, which is the longest river in Guyana and a major transportation route for goods and people. Mountains are another important part of Guyana's landscape. The Kanuku Mountains, for example, rise up from the forested plains in the south-central region of the country. These mountains are home to a variety of endangered species, including the giant otter, harpy eagle, and jaguar. The Pakaraima Mountains, located in the western part of Guyana, are another important geological feature in the country. They are home to the country's highest peak, Mount Roraima, which straddles the borders of Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil. This mountain range also contains numerous rivers and waterfalls and is an important part of the country's ecotourism industry. In addition to its mountains and waterfalls, Guyana is also home to a variety of unique rock formations, including giant boulders that are scattered throughout the savannas of the Rupununi region. These rock formations are believed to be over two billion years old and are an important part of Guyana's geological heritage. Guyana's unique geological features make it a fascinating destination for geologists, nature lovers, and adventure seekers. From its towering waterfalls to its ancient rock formations, this South American country is a treasure trove of natural wonders waiting to be explored.
Geography
Guyana, located on the northern coast of South America, boasts an incredibly diverse landscape. With dense rainforests, expansive savannas, and towering mountains, the country has something to offer every type of adventurer. Starting with its rivers, Guyana is home to some of the largest and most powerful in the world. The Essequibo River, the third longest in South America, runs through the heart of the country and features incredible wildlife such as river otters and giant river turtles. the Demerara, Berbice, and Corentyne Rivers are important for transportation and fishing industries. In terms of mountains, the Pakaraima Mountains provide a stunning backdrop for Guyana's landscape. The highest peak in the country is Mount Roraima, which stands at 9,219 feet and is part of the Triple Border, where Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil meet. A trek up the mountain provides breathtaking views and is a popular destination for hikers. Guyana's rainforests are a sight to behold. The country's tropical climate allows for lush vegetation to thrive, with over 80% of the country being covered in forests. The Amazon rainforest stretches into Guyana's southern regions, providing a haven for exotic wildlife such as jaguars and giant anteaters. Guyana's geography is one of its greatest attractions. Whether you're looking for adventure in the mountains or relaxation on a peaceful river, this South American country has it all.
Ecology
Guyana's ecosystem is incredibly important, as it serves as a home to a wide range of species, some of which can only be found in this unique South American country. The country's many rivers and dense rainforests provide habitats for a diverse range of animals, from jaguars and giant otters to monkeys and spiders. One of the most interesting species found in Guyana is the giant anteater. This impressive animal can be found in the country's savannahs, where it uses its long, sticky tongue to eat up to 30,000 ants and termites per day. The jaguar is another iconic resident of the Guyanese forests. These large cats are incredibly fast and can easily climb trees, making them an apex predator in the region. However, Guyana is not just home to larger animals - the country is also home to an incredible array of birds, reptiles, and insects. Guyana is famous for the giant otter, which can be seen playing and swimming in the country's rivers and streams. This species is incredibly intelligent and social, living in groups of up to 20 individuals. In addition to these larger, more charismatic species, Guyana is also home to some of the world's most important plant and insect life. The country's dense rainforests are home to a huge variety of trees, many of which are used for medicinal purposes. The Amazon Rainforest, which takes up a large portion of Guyana's landmass, is known for its incredible biodiversity, with scientists estimating that there may be up to 16,000 different tree species in the region. Unfortunately, Guyana's ecosystem is under threat due to deforestation and climate change. Trees are being cut down at an alarming rate, which in turn is harming the many species that call Guyana home. The loss of habitat is especially concerning for endangered species such as the giant river otter and the harpy eagle. Despite these challenges, there is hope for Guyana's ecosystem. The country has taken a leading role in the battle against climate change, with its government committing to preserving forest land and working with international organizations to support sustainable development. This includes programs to encourage ecotourism, which in turn can help support local communities and provide an economic incentive to protect Guyana's stunning natural environment. Guyana's ecosystem is of immense value and importance, both to the country itself and to the wider world. Preserving this unique environment is vital for the species that call it home, and for the many benefits it provides to humans as well.
Biodiversity
Guyana is home to a vast array of flora and fauna, making it one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. With dense rainforests, savannahs, wetlands, and coastal regions, Guyana is a haven for biodiversity. It is estimated that Guyana has over 7,000 species of plants, many of which are used for medicinal purposes. The country's rainforests provide a habitat for over 800 species of birds, including the national bird, the hoatzin, and the harpy eagle. Amongst the most unique species found in the rainforests are the giant otter and the giant anteater. Guyana is also home to a variety of primates, including the howler monkey, spider monkey, and capuchin monkey, as well as other mammals such as the jaguar, puma, and tapir. The country's waters are equally rich, with over 400 species of fish and several species of marine mammals, including manatees and dolphins. Despite its rich biodiversity, Guyana faces several threats to its ecosystem, including deforestation, mining, and climate change. Many of the country's species are endangered, including the giant otter, the harpy eagle, and the jaguar. However, measures such as protected areas, conservation efforts, and ecotourism have been implemented to help preserve the country's biodiversity. In recent years, Guyana has made significant strides in preserving its natural resources. The country has established several protected areas, including the Kaieteur National Park and the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area, to preserve its unique flora and fauna. ecotourism has become a major industry, providing an economic incentive for preserving the country's biodiversity. There is no doubt that Guyana's rich biodiversity holds immense value, not just for the country but for the world as a whole. With continued conservation and preservation efforts, Guyana can continue to showcase itself as a leader in eco-tourism and environmental sustainability while maintaining its diverse and unique ecosystem.

Climate
Guyana has a tropical climate, with two distinct seasons: a wet season from May to July and a dry season from August to November. The average temperature in Guyana ranges from 24°C to 32°C. The country's climate has a significant impact on its environment and agriculture. The wet season in Guyana often results in flooding, which can damage the country's infrastructure and affect agriculture. At the same time, the rainfall also helps to replenish water sources and irrigate crops. The dry season, on the other hand, can lead to droughts that can have devastating effects on agriculture. Despite the challenges posed by the climate, Guyana has significant potential for agriculture. The country has vast fertile lands that can be used for agriculture, but the lack of proper irrigation systems and infrastructure limits the agricultural production. The government has taken steps to improve agriculture production by investing in infrastructure and promoting sustainable farming practices. Recently, there has been a push for the increase in organic farming in Guyana. The country's climate has also spurred the development of eco-tourism, with many visitors interested in the unique flora and fauna found in Guyana's rainforests. Guyana has one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world, and the country is home to many endangered species. Guyana's tropical climate plays a significant role in the country's environment and agricultural sector, with both positive and negative effects. Proper infrastructure and sustainable farming practices can help to mitigate the negative effects of the climate and unlock the potential of Guyana's rich agricultural resources and diverse ecosystem.
Environmental Issues
Guyana is facing a multitude of environmental challenges that threaten its fragile ecosystem. Among these challenges are deforestation and climate change. Deforestation in Guyana is mainly driven by the mining industry, which clears large areas of forest to extract minerals such as gold and bauxite. In addition, commercial logging and agriculture also contribute to deforestation. Deforestation has a significant impact on Guyana's environment and biodiversity. The country has one of the largest undisturbed tropical rainforests in the world, which is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic. Deforestation not only destroys their habitat but also disrupts the delicate balance of the ecosystem. The other major environmental issue faced by Guyana is climate change. The country experiences extreme weather events such as flooding and droughts, which are becoming increasingly severe and frequent due to climate change. The agricultural sector, which plays a vital role in Guyana's economy, is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Guyana's government has recognized the importance of addressing these environmental issues and has taken steps to mitigate their impact. In 2009, the country introduced a Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by deforestation and promoting sustainable development. The LCDS involves creating a mechanism for payments for ecosystem services, which provide economic incentives for forest conservation. In addition to the LCDS, Guyana is also working to promote sustainable forestry and agricultural practices. The government is introducing measures to reduce the impact of mining on the environment, including setting aside protected areas where mining is not permitted. Guyana has also implemented legislation to regulate logging and promote sustainable forestry practices. While these initiatives are a step in the right direction, there is a still a long way to go before Guyana's ecosystem can be considered safe. It is important that the government continues to prioritize environmental protection and work towards sustainable development. This will not only benefit the country's unique ecology but also its economy and the well-being of its people.
Politics
Guyana is a country that operates as a presidential representative democratic republic, meaning that the President acts both as the head of state and the head of government. The president is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and can only serve a maximum of two terms. The National Assembly, which is made up of 65 members, is the unicameral legislative body in Guyana. Members of the National Assembly are elected by proportional representation, with the country being divided into nine regions, and each region is allocated a number of seats in the National Assembly based on its population.Guyana has been facing political turbulence following the March 2020 elections, which were closely contested between the incumbent and opposition parties. The results were delayed due to allegations of vote fraud and irregularities in the election process. The situation was tense, and violence erupted between rival political factions. However, in August of the same year, the election results were validated by the country's highest court, and Irfaan Ali of the People's Progressive Party was declared the winner and sworn in as the ninth President of Guyana.Apart from the election controversy, Guyana is facing a host of other social and economic issues, including corruption, drug trafficking, poverty, and unemployment. The political landscape is not immune to these challenges. The government has been grappling with allegations of corruption, and there have been calls for greater accountability and transparency in government operations. Furthermore, Guyana is facing environmental issues such as forest destruction and climate change, which will undoubtedly require the government's attention and action.Guyana's foreign policy is anchored on the principles of non-alignment, peaceful coexistence, and respect for international law. The country maintains diplomatic relations with more than 110 countries and is a member of several international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the Union of South American Nations.Guyana's political landscape is fraught with challenges, both old and new.
