How It All Began
Chapter One: A Lonely Island, Right?
Masterpost | Next | Ao3
Story Summary: Remus, son of a simple fisherman, had worked hard to become the captain of his own pirate ship. And in his humble opinion, it was going great! His crew was small but reliable and they had just stolen something that could them some nice cash from a military vessel they happened to cross on the open sea. They just needed to hide it somewhere until it was safe to sell. How lucky for them that they come across a nice, uninhabited island.
Little did Remus know just who he would find on that little piece of land and how it would change his life entirely.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Land ahoy!”
Remus could just hear Sloane’s shout through the open porthole in his captain quarters. With a hum he put away the star chart he’d been studying before standing up to look out the window onto the unusually calm sea. According to his maps, they weren’t close to any inhabited islands, which meant that he should be able to find a good hiding place for his newest acquisition.
He glanced over to the box he had placed the seal in when a knock sounded from his door.
“Captain?” It was Patton. “Can I come in?”
“Sure, daddy-o, if you wanna take the risk!” He could practically see Patton hesitating, wondering if he was ‘indecent’ as he called it. Still, a few moments later the door opened and his friend poked his head in, prepared to flee if Remus was not properly dressed after all. He let out a sigh of relief to see his Captain wearing all his clothes.
“Sloane spotted an island. What should we do?” Normally, Remus would tease him a bit about his continued shyness even after travelling with them for over two years now, but he had more important things to deal with at the moment.
“I’ll take a look myself.” He grabbed his hat and with measured steps moved past Patton, who closed the door behind him and followed. “Anything suspicious so far?”
“Not that I know of. We haven’t come across anymore ships since the Admiral’s. And I still have a bad feeling about that one, how come it was only the one ship and not a fleet?” Out of the corner of his eyes, Remus could see Patton wringing his hands together nervously. Remus couldn’t understand how he was still so uncomfortable with the pirate lifestyle. At least he wore the outfit with more confidence, his light brown curls held back by a bandana and his skin having a healthy tan.
“There’re all kinds of reasons that could happen, Pat, it’s not unheard of. And nobody’s following us, so there’s no need to worry about it anymore anyway. We did the hit, we got something out of it, nobody saw us. Everything’s peachy.”
“Well, if you say so…”
“I do. Trust your Captain, Paps, by the time they’ve noticed that the seal’s gone, we won’t have it on board anymore. In a few months, when they stop the extra controls to look for it, we’ll get it back and sell it for a nice price.”
They reached the main deck at that point so Patton didn’t bother to respond. Remy spotted them immediately and yelled, “Capt’n on deck!” Upon his call, Sloane hurried down from the crow’s nest, hurried over to them and handed Remus a spyglass. The lithe young man could have been an acrobat in a circus with how skilled he descended the rope ladder, his dark blond hair dancing in the wind.
“It’s right over there,” Slone said as he came to a stop next to Remus, pointing north-west, a little off their current course. “So far I haven’t spotted anything in the vicinity.”
“Should probably do a sail around to be sure,” Remy commented, also now standing next to them. “The forest on there’s pretty thick, we can’t see the other side.”
“Boatswain! Your thoughts?” Remus called up to Corbin currently at the helm. Of course he trusted Remy as his First Mate and he probably would order a sail around anyway, but he liked to hear the opinion of his crew on matters like this.
Corbin was a great navigator with a more calculated approach that was very unlike Remus’ style, so it was nice to hand off the more responsible stuff to him. But it also meant that sometimes he had to wait for Corbin to finish thinking things through and Remus hated waiting. He used the time to take a look at the island himself with the spyglass Sloane had handed him.
It wasn’t a big chunk of land. He estimated they would need about three hours to sail around it with the wind they were having today, and they should be able to do that before sundown. The forest, as Remy had called it, was more akin to a jungle, which for the purposes of hiding stuff was always preferrable. Maybe he could even find a cave or two in the cliff faces surrounding the eastern side.
“I agree with the First Mate,” Corbin finally called. “We should make a wider berth in case of reefs since this part of the ocean isn’t as well chartered yet.”
“Let’s do that then. Pat, inform the rest of the crew, we’ll most likely drop anchor there tonight.”
“Aye aye, Captain!”
“And you go back to your post, Sloane.”
“Aye aye!” With that both of them were gone and he was left alone with Remy.
“Anything to report?” Remus asked, not really expecting much of an answer. Don’t get him wrong, he liked Remy and he was a good First Mate most of the time, but in situations like this where they’ve been just sailing for a while, he tended to slack off a bit.
“Nah, everyone’s fine as far as I know. Well, Toby’s a bit salty that we didn’t shoot at the Admiral but other than that.”
“What else is new?” Remus chuckled. Toby was a more than enthusiastic Man-at-arms with a love for explosives, though he preferred to shoot at objects and not people. He had practically begged Remus to let him fire at least one shot at the Admiral’s ship as they sailed away, but giving up their cover for that was chaos even Remus didn’t endorse.
Remy snorted in response before looking more serious.
“What are your orders for when we land? Who stays, who comes with?”
“If the cost is clear and we land, I’ll go alone. The rest of you have some free time.”
“You sure?” Remy glanced at his captain over the rim of his darkened glasses. “We’ve got no idea what’s on that island.”
“’Course I’m sure. The less you all know of what we got and where it is, the better. I can handle myself against whatever inhabitants there are.”
“If you say so,” Remy shrugs. “I won’t say no to an evening off.”
“Didn’t think you would.”
“I’m gonna go prepare for landing then.”
“Go ahead.” Remus watched Remy walk away. No doubt his First Mate was off to grab some booze and his boyfriend instead of actually doing what they need to drop anchor. Well, he couldn’t blame him, in his shoes he would do the same. After all, they’ve done this exact same thing a million times before. Still, as Remus caught sight of Elliot hurrying across deck, he told them to get everything ready for landing instead. Better prepared than dead is a philosophy even Remus could get behind.
~~~
By the time the rowboat with Remus, Patton and Elliot hit the shore of the island, it was nearing sundown. Remus guessed he had about another hour or so to scope out the place for a good hiding spot. For now, he had left the box containing the seal on the ship but it would be ideal if he could get rid of it early tomorrow morning and then they could sail off to the nearest harbor.
Not wanting to waste more time, he turned to his two crewmembers.
“I’ll take a look around and come back. Neither of you get off this beach unless it’s life or death, you hear me?”
“Aye aye, Captain!” Patton agreed while Elliot simply nodded. They seemed tired, so Remus thought giving them a break off of the ship and away from everyone for a few hours would do them some good. Patton could keep an eye out for trouble. With a grin, Remus pulled out his machete and made his way across the beach and into the jungle.
The smell in the air shifted quite noticeably as Remus continued into the greenery. He couldn’t place the scents, but it was a much heavier air than on the open sea. His eyes flitted about, searching for any dangers. He could hear animals rustling in the leaves and spotted shadows move but nothing big enough to truly worry him. He knew how to look out for snakes and spiders that might be venomous, but he didn’t feel like risking getting attacked by an ape or something similar, though the island was too small to house them anyway.
Remus made his way through the greenery, hacking away with his machete when he couldn’t find another way through the underbrush when he spotted what looked like a path. Not a well-travelled one, but a path nonetheless. Once he reached it, he crouched down to look for tracks on the ground, either human or a large animal. He found what looked like boot imprints, though several days old. Still, they were fresh enough for him to identify. But they hadn’t seen any ships or even rowboats on their sail around, so he couldn’t imagine someone remained on here.
Curiosity beckoned him along the path however, and he continued forward, keeping his machete in hand. He had to duck under some branches here and there – he paid attention to keeping his hat, he liked this one and was not keen on trying to find a replacement – but otherwise it was a quiet trip. Remus figured it was about time he started heading back to his crew when the path lead past a chasm that looked somewhat deep. Now that he thought about it, he might have been travelling on an incline. From where he stood, Remus couldn’t see the bottom of the pit. Maybe he should throw a rock and listen to how long it took to land? Or maybe just take one small step closer, get a better vantage point?
“I would advise you to stay away from the edge. The ground is quite unstable, and the fall would surely lead to death.”
Remus spun around, raising his machete towards the stranger that had suddenly appeared behind him. The man looked at him through a pair of glasses that looked like they went out of fashion several decades ago. His clothes didn’t look better, though they were rather plain looking. Pants, a long-sleeved shirt that was rolled up to his elbows and a vest. Still, something was off about the outfit to Remus. He narrowed his eyes until it hit him – the clothes were worn down sure, but otherwise the stranger looked too clean for someone who apparently lived on an abandoned island. His black hair was neatly tied into a ponytail and not a single hair was on his face, nobody bothered to shave when they’re trapped on an island!
The stranger continued staring at Remus, his brown eyes drilling into him and suddenly he remembered how to speak.
“Where the fuck did you come from?” he exclaimed. The other cocked his head before motioning towards the path leading further into the jungle.
“I came from my camp. I was on my way to examine some fungal growth I have been observing for my research. Where did you come from?”
“My ship.” Remus gestured behind himself as he slowly moved away from the chasm towards the direction he came. The stranger looked harmless, but he knew that appearances can’t tell you everything. For all he knew that man could try to attack him at any moment and standing next to a cliff definitely wasn’t where he wanted to be in that moment.
“We did a sail around. There were no other ships.”
“Indeed.”
“Then you shipwrecked?”
“No, I came here on purpose.”
“Without a way back?”
“Without a ship, yes.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“For research purposes. There are many species that only live on this island or can develop freely here without the influence of humans.” The calmness of the stranger was very unnerving to Remus. He was holding a big ass knife after all, but the man didn’t seem bothered by it in the least. Instead, his eyes wandered around until he seemed to spot something of interest on the ground and casually kneeled down a few feet away to inspect it. Remus used that opportunity to switch the machete for his pistol.
You are a scientist then?”
“Yes. And you are a pirate, I presume?” Remus narrowed his eyes. He grew up the son of a fisherman, he knows when something smells fishy. And this stranger smelled very strongly.
“What off it?”
“Nothing. I was merely attempting to converse with you. Whatever your business on this island is, it’s no concern of mine as long as it doesn’t interfere with my research. So please try to not disturb the wildlife as much as possible during your stay.”
“Why did you approach me if you didn’t care about what I do here?”
“Because I feared you might fall.”
“The fuck do you care whether I fall or not?”
“I simply do, is that so surprising?” The stranger stood, apparently done inspecting the ground. He watched Remus, seemingly very curious about his answer.
“Well, yeah. Most people I’ve met don’t care about others just ‘cause. ‘Specially not a castaway.”
“I am not a castaway.”
“Yeah, just a weirdo on a deserted island.”
“Think of me whatever you like, it is none of my concern,” the man sighed before looking up to the sky. Remus followed his glance for a second, seeing the first stars appear. He needed to make his way back.
“You should return to your ship,” the stranger said as if he read his mind and that was just too freaky for Remus to handle. Without another thought he took aim at the stranger’s shoulder and pulled the trigger. He hit his mark – of course he did, he was one of the best shooters on the seas – causing the man to stumble. To stumble right towards the chasm.
To Remus it was like time slowed down as he watched the ground under the stranger break away. He lost his footing and suddenly, he was out of sight. Remus stood frozen, listening to the sounds of the body colliding with stone several times before a loud crunch announced its arrival at the bottom. The man was surely dead.
Another look towards the sky reminded Remus that he should make his way back to the ship pronto. He pulled out his compass just to make sure he didn’t get lost on the way back. A last glance towards the chasm before he disappeared back the way he came. It wasn’t the first time he killed on accident. By tomorrow, the weird feeling in his stomach would be gone. He was sure of it.

The Plan so far
So, this blog was a very spontaneous idea I had yesterday (very late in the evening). So I took some time to think it through today, as well as get some more lists from other Fanders.
The plan now is to first create lists for the separate facets of the Thomas Sanders fandom, i.e. Sanders Sides, Shorts Characters, Cartoon Therapy and Roleslaying with Roman. (I'm sorry that this means I need to split up Remy and Emile for now, we'll get to crossovers later.)
For that to work, I need a comprehensive list of characters first. So this is my call for your help! I'll put a list of who I got so far after the cut and you can reply to this post or send me an ask about more characters I can/should include!
I'm really happy with the positive reactions I got for creating this blog, thank you for your support! 💗💙💖💙💜💛💚
Sanders Sides:
Patton
Roman
Logan
Virgil
Janus
Remus

Thomas
Nico
King
Dragon Witch (unsure if I should include her but if I do, this is where she'll be)

So I’m just going to throw this out there for future Cartoon Therapy episodes if Thomas and his team can ever get back former patients 😄🤞
Here’s some future Cartoon Therapy predictions!
☛If they can get back Larry and Dot: they have to have matching outfits again
Tumblr media
☛They will bring up the stolen Stitch doll again and/or finally return it to Picani, who will say that he knew they had it the whole time
☛Larry will mention his pop pop
☛Dot will say ‘Gee Minetti!’
☛It’s been a while so they might have a child now!
☛If they can get back Elliott: they definitely broke up with Mitchell and met someone new. They might still have issues with their dad.
☛If they can get back Corbin & Sloan: they’re definitely married now
☛If they can get back Kai: Kai is a top gamer now and has fully embraced their geekiness. Lauren is still their girlfriend and they support each other dearly.
☛If they can get back Sam: Sam finally makes friends at school and has quit their medical degree for art full time!
☛If they can get back Dalton: he has to show up again randomly trying to sell us sandwiches or something, I just miss Dalton lol
☛And Picani will of course play his ukelele again
Plus I made another bingo card!
Tumblr media
I just really like Cartoon Therapy lol

dearest flower blease gift us with the knowledge of what the laoft characters do/would make yt vids about
Roman: aiming for romanticized chicken farm life but it comes across as hillbilly shitposting most of the time
Virgil: knitting/weaving/lace tatting ASMR
Logan: hank and john green-esque videos about environmental conservation and ecology
Patton: baking show with his mom that becomes a mildly viral meme for their constant terrible puns
Emile: cartoon therapy... TWO /hj
Remy: hillbilly shitposting all of the time, on purpose edition
Kai: lets plays natch, has a respectable number of fans and two (2) rage quit compilations
Corbin and Sloane: vlogs. Sloane mostly shoots and makes cutesy comments to get Corbin to fondly groan. doesnt even have a gimmick or anything he just uses it as an actual diary and posts like. 3 minute long middling-skilled videos of a campsite. Corbin waves. theyre on a little weekend date trip :) the comment ask about the grotesque little goblin creature that ran past in a few frames and Sloanes just like "Dont worry about it :)"
Elliot: Remy's videos remixed into godtier shitposts. Remy finds this hilarious

(via Brutal 2015 Murder of a Young Trans Woman in Columbus)
Her name was Ryan. She was 21 when she was quite brutally murdered in 2015. It took until 2020  to identify her. And just recently, we learned she was a trans woman.
"Born in Biloxi, Mississippi, Ryan relocated in before 2015 to Corbin, Kentucky about 90 minutes south of Lexington. It appears she had three siblings, one sister and two brothers. Ryan studied at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. At least two of her siblings remained in Missippi. Ryan’s parents lived in Kentucky.
Ryan’s family claimed she was fond of video games, computers, cartoons, and enjoyed playing with her younger brother. Her Facebook profile from her mid to late teens is filled with both enthusiastic and disapproving gaming content. She used avatars rather than photographs. I may be imagining a gradual shift in how she depicted herself.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations did a deep dive into Ryan’s social media and online activity. They discovered she had been exploring hormone therapy and voice training to facilitate her transition. Additionally, Ryan had been shopping for female clothing." #RyanZimmerman #trans

Back in Baltimore
Warnings: Implied abuse, cursing, drugs/drug mentions, the foster care system, violence (some doodles Remus made), death mentions.
Prompt by @lance-alt
They were barely three. They'd been called in for a special day, so they packed their garbage bags (no one ever donated suitcases, and it wasn't like anyone would give them anything not required by law) early in the morning and ate a rushed, stale breakfast. The woman whose foster home it was crammed them in her van with the other six kids staying with her. There wasn't enough room and since they were the youngest, Remus sat in Roman's lap, looking out the window and bouncing his leg.
They got out at a nice park and the woman explained that today was a day where all the foster kids were going to be here to meet with "possible candidates" and maybe find new moms and dads. Remus picked at the grass, his fingers not yet precise enough to tie the blades into knots. Roman sat next to him, listening attentively until the woman clapped her hands twice.
Roman jumped up, beckoning to Remus. Remus followed, chasing Roman around the yard, his stubby legs propelling him forward.
Roman's foot caught in a hole in the grass in front of two men who were looking around at the kids playing in the park. He fell catastrophically, tumbling over himself and hitting against one of the men's legs.
"Well hello there!" The man said to Roman, ignoring Remus who had run up behind his brother, checking to see if he was hurt.
The man reached down, helping Roman to his feet. "I'm Corbin," he said, and then gestured to the man next to him. "This is Sloan, my husband."
"I'm Roman!" Roman said. Remus stood behind him. He wanted to speak, introduce himself, but... Roman looked so happy. And Remus suddenly felt very uncomfortable. This wasn't his place, not at all. Maybe.... Maybe these were Roman's new dads, and maybe.... Maybe Remus would find new parents somewhere else.
He walked away, sniffling. He didn't want to cry in front of Roman, then Roman would try to cheer him up. And that would be... That would be... A bad way to say goodbye.
★★★★★★★
"Fucking hell. I fucking hate Baltimore." Remus slung the garbage bag over his shoulder. He'd been kicked out of another foster home (this time for selling drugs, which sucked, because not only was he caught, but he had also been here a good few months and actually had a few regular clients.) And now he was going back to Baltimore. Home-sweet-fucking-home, Baltimore. There hadn't been any open houses in the area so booting his scrawny seventeen year old ass over a state and into his least favorite city was obviously the best thing to do.
He'd start at his new school tomorrow. He stepped down, thanking the bus driver, and relished the silence walking to his new temporary home. As he walked up the short pathway to the door, he heard yelling inside. Good to set your expectations right early, right?
He knocked on the door, rather loudly, and the yelling stopped.
"Oh, hello, uh...." Said a wiry woman who came to the door.
"Remus. Your new.... Kid," he supplied. He adjusted the garbage bag on his shoulder, hearing some of his few prized possessions clink together at the bottom of the bag.
"Right, right, come on in. You'll be sharing a room with Virgil, since you and him are about the same age." The woman beckoned him in, showing him up the stairs and into a room that was papered with band posters.
"'Sup," said a emo boy sitting in one of the three beds in the room. "I'm Virgil, but you can call me Virge. I guess we're roomies now?"
"That's basically the deal, yeah. I'm Remus." Remus walked to one of the beds and set his garbage bag down gently on it.
"Weird name."
"Says the guy named after a Roman poet who wrote about bees and flowers," Remus looked over his shoulder, watching the boy of maybe fifteen or sixteen crack a smile.
"Touché."
"What grade are you in? And do you go to the local public highschool? Because I'll need a tour guide tomorrow." Remus started to pull things out of his trash bag ""suitcase"" and organizing them.
"Tenth, and yeah. I'll take you around." Virgil hummed along to the song playing in his headphones.
"Fucking Baltimore."
★★★★★★★
A substitute teacher for his first class on his first day of a new school. Fucking spectacular.
"Hello class, I'm Ms. Mason. I'll be your substitute for today. First off, roll call." The teacher, about 30, with short brown hair, bent down and retrieved a clipboard, brushing some hair out of her face, and started to read names.
"Duke, Remus?" She said, after a few names.
"Here." He'd been garnering looks since he came in, because having a new student is fun and exciting for everyone else.
The teacher nodded, moving on down the list. Remus ears pricked. "Prince, Roman?" Remus looked around, somewhat frantically.
"Here," Said a boy with light brown hair, a few rows in front of Remus.
Remus craned his neck, trying desperately to get a look at Roman's face. It was super duper unlikely, but there's only so many "Roman"s in Baltimore. Remus thought about the name. If he really was.... Remus couldn't even think it.... If he really was him, then when he'd gotten adopted he'd changed his name... He'd upgraded, from a Duke to a Prince.
Ms. Mason finished calling roll, setting down the clipboard and picking up a thick stack of papers. "This is your worksheet for today, it's due at the end of the period." She maneuvered around the teacher's desk, handing out papers. Remus took one distractedly, still watching the back of Roman's head.
He didn't dare to hope, and yet here he was, hoping, desperately. Desperately, that this was his Roman. His brother.
He spent the rest of the class nervously fidgeting with his paper, doodling people's heads being cut off and swords being shoved through people's guts. When the bell rang he had already stuffed the paper in his bag, and he made his way toward Roman. What if he was wrong? He couldn't be. But what if he was?
"Do you need anything?" A voice said with a thick New York accent, and Remus met the eyes of a tall, thin boy wearing a leather jacket and sunglasses.
"Your number?" Remus cocked his eyebrow. If the boy was straight he'd be scared off and if he was gay... Well, Remus wouldn't mind.
The boy leaned down a bit, hugging Remus around the neck. "Type this into your phone," he whispered, starting to say his phone number after Remus had opened his contacts app. "And, the name is Remy, by the way. Toodles, babes."
Remus grinned, typing in the name and putting his phone in his pocket. He looked up, only to see the last of his classmates filtering out, and no Roman in sight. Fuck.
★★★★★★★
His next two classes were fine. He didn't pay attention, mind too distracted by Roman and Remy...
The lunch bell rang, and Remus was already out the door of AP calculus, pulling out his phone and tapping Remy's name.
"Babes?" Came the sarcastic, New York accented voice.
"Where can I meet you for lunch? It's Remus, by the way. From first period."
"A building, the one by the West gate. I'll be at the door and we can drop by Starbucks or something."
Remus hung up, walking through campus until he found the A building and spotting a shiny pair of sunglasses. "Hey there Remy. You said something about Starbucks?"
"Hey babes! Nice to see you again," Remy slung an arm over Remus' shoulders. "And yes. Starbies."
Remus chuckled. "Which direction?"
Remy gestured with his free hand, slipping his phone in his pocket. "What brings you to Baltimore? The big b?"
"Got kicked out. Again." Remus shook his head at Remy's concerned look. "Don't worry, my birth parents are dead." Remus laughed at Remy's shocked expression. "Don't worry about it. But, any chances you know that Roman Prince guy?"
"Yeah, we've talked a few times. Talks a lot about his dads, real family loving kid. I guess." Remy blew some hair out of his face, gesturing for Remus to turn a corner.
Remus was practically holding his breath. "And his dads, do you know their names?"
"Corbin and... Sloan? Shaun?"
"Sloan." Remus pushed open the doors of the Starbucks. "That's definitely him, then. My brother. Roman Duke. Or well, these days, Roman Prince."
"Isn't that dramatic? Damn, your life is like a soap opera or some shit, babes."
"Yeah, I guess," Remus laughed. "What do you want?"

I hope you are doing okay I appreciate the fact that you notice when something is not working and that you work to improve, it shows the hard work you do. remember to drink water! And for your other surgical character I like the idea of Kai being a orthopedic surgeon/resident (they work with bones his disability could be a reason he went into that type of surgery) or Corbin and Sloan could be transplant surgeons (one to remove the organ and one to place in new person) -Tired Tree
Thanks Tree. You sound a bit like my mom- she’s always telling me to drink water.
I love your suggestions! They make a lot of sense. I think the term for the transplant surgeons is a general surgeon since they deal with some of the usual transplants. Since Deceit is known for his speciality in burns and elements of plastic surgery, Sloane and Corbin could be known for their excellence in transplants. And Kai’s job makes perfect sense.
Yeah, I realized that with the jobs I’ve placed my main characters in, while I can deal with a lot of interpersonal issues and hospital politics and some intense cases, I was mostly locked out of one of the main elements of medical dramas- surgery. Patton‘s probably the only one I have so far who does surgeries (which might be pushing his job as head of Pediatrics a bit, idk). Since I want to have more options in the stories I tell, I figured it was time to add another character.
Have a good day-

L and V (Part 9)
A/N: oof where did my motivation go? also, there may or may not be foreshadowing in this chapter
Tropes/Pairings: Analogical, background Royality, hero x villain, soulmates AU (the one where if you draw on yourself, it shows up on your soulmate’s skin), and superpowers
Summary: Corbin informs Virgil of the new conspiracy theories surrounding Anxiety and Logic, and Virgil has to face the consequences the next day. Fortunately, the next day isn’t a field day. Unfortunately, he still has to face the agency bully and his assistant.
TW: This one guy who’s pretty much a stereotypical school bully, a fight, dread, a ““dark side”” but this is a human!au
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8
Virgil sleepily stumbled into the kitchen the next day. After the fight with the A-team and Logan’s announcement, he had collapsed in exhaustion as soon as he caught sight of his bed. He had slept peacefully, for the first time in a long while.
“Hey, kiddo,” Patton greeted Virgil as he cooked some pancakes.
Virgil slowly made himself some coffee and become aware than your average zombie. As he nursed a cup of warm coffee, he cherished his day off, though off days were usually after a tough battle. After a long sip of caffeine, Virgil replied, “Hey, Pat.”
Patton flipped a pancake sloppily. “You have a day off?”
“Yeah, you?” Virgil nonchalantly took another swig.
“Yep!” Patton chirped. “I’m going to spend the day with Daphne.”
Virgil squinted in thought. “Isn’t she that crazy woman you met at the library?”
“Kiddo,” the elder scolded, setting the pancake onto a plate before turning to look disapprovingly at Virgil. “She isn’t crazy. Far from it! She’s a genius! She showed me this really good book!”
Virgil nodded slowly. “That sounds fake but okay.” He drank some more coffee. He casually turned his phone on to check Tumblr, but he was bombarded with a bunch of texts from Corbin.
Corbin: THIS IS NOT A DRILL!
Corbin: CODE ORANGE!
Corbin sent a link.
Corbin: COME OVER TO THE St. CLAUDIA PARK!
Corbin: Pick up!!
Corbin: Look at the news!!!
Corbin: Did you see the news?!
“What the heck?” Virgil wondered aloud. To start, Code Orange, if he remembered correctly, was a scandal or an information leak of some sort. He quickly typed in the password to his phone and pressed the link Corbin had sent him.
Logic and Anxiety: Dating Confirmed?!
The picture below it was a slightly blurry photo of Virgil and Logan making out the day before.
Virgil’s face was drained of blood. There. He was done. His hero reputation was ruined by this scandal. A hero soul mates with a villain? He was surely going to be treated as a traitor within his agency. And outside his agency, things would be worse. People would shoot him dirty looks in the streets and outright harass him. He was ruined, like how Hamilton when he had published the Reynolds Pamphlet.
How would Virgil pay his bills if he wasn’t a hero? He supposed he could get a different job, but he had dropped out of college to become a full time hero. Virgil would have to freeload off of Patton, but he didn’t want to strain Patton’s finances, especially if Patton suffers the consequences of the scandal, too. Patton had a higher position in the agency, if Patton’s bank account was anything to go by.
And L? Villainy was his job, it was how he kept food on the table. He would get treated as a traitor, too. His own friends would probably turn their backs to him. Virgil scrolled through the news, heart sinking when he realized that the pictures were all over the news. On social media, both villain and hero agencies worked hard to get them off the Internet or to loudly dismiss it as photoshop. Half other people on the Internet thought it was just as “fake” as the proofs of Anxiety and Logic being soul mates.
Corbin: When are you going to get your BUTT over to St. Claudia’s Park?! I’m freezing! And I know you’ve read my texts!
Corbin. Could Corbin fix it? Virgil hoped so. Corbin could fix a lot of things. Corbin fixed his cracked pot once, and Virgil still had no idea how.
Corbin: Virgil! Don’t ignore me!
On second thought, maybe Corbin couldn’t fix his way out of a paper bag, but he could sure as heck order others to. Virgil slipped his phone into his pocket and flew out the door to go to the park.
Reluctantly, Virgil went to work the next day with a pit in his stomach. Some other superheroes shot him murderous glances and others shot him pitying ones. It was a paperwork day, not one in the field, to which Virgil was thankful for. He didn’t think he could handle all of the taunts of villains and the heavy suspicion citizens. He worked quietly at his desk, thanking the universe that he had a private office. His assistant, Imani, typed furiously in a separate desk a few feet away from him. Imani sniffled as she filled out the forms. For the sake of not having awkward silence, Virgil played some classical music from his computer.
“So,” Virgil said, breaking the silence for first time in the hour they had been working silently. He drummed his fingers on the wooden desk, trying to manage a way to get words past his lips without sounding like a fool. “Have you, uh, seen the news recently?”
Imani looked up but kept typing. “Yes, I have!” she said in her British accent. She grinned. “I read the article on the dog and the rabbit becoming friends!”
Virgil stared at Imani in disbelief. “…So you don’t know about the Code Orange?”
Imani’s grin wavered and her eyes seemed lifeless for once. “I do know about that.” She stopped typing. Her smile dropped. “Is it true?”
Virgil ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah,” he sighed.
“Goodness!” she gasped. Imani stood up and slammed her hands onto her desk. “How could you do that? Logic? I didn’t believe all those rumors, but this…this…”
Virgil sank further into his chair and hid his face in his sweater. “I-I-I’m sorry…”
Imani teared up and sniffled. “I’m afraid ‘sorry’ doesn’t cut it. Logic almost put my family business out of business!”
Virgil squinted and wondered if this was going where he thought it was going. “…What’s your family business?” he asked hesitantly.
“Family Hashen Bakery,” Imani sniveled. Virgil handed her a tissue, which she took gratefully. “We think someone broke into it sometime ago.” She aggressively blew her nose.
Virgil winced and guilt ate at his heavy heart. “Oh…”
After a few minutes of Virgil passing tissues to her, Imani calmed down a little with only some sniffles. “Virgil, I know you’re a good person, but Logic…Logic isn’t.”
“I know,” Virgil admitted. “I think the universe made a mistake.”
“Virgil, this is the plot of a million books,” Imani said as-a-matter-of-factly as she could when wiping tears from her face. “The universe doesn’t make mistakes.” She and Virgil solemnly locked eyes. “I hope that’s true.” Then she sat down and continued typing almost as if nothing had ever happened. Virgil stared at her, surprised to see how easily she had slipped back into work. After a few minutes, Virgil sat back down, too, and filled out more paperwork.
The two sat in tense silence, except for the music Virgil still played. He had turned it a little louder, to cut the tension. An hour later, Virgil stood up. “I’m going to take a break,” Virgil muttered at Imani. He watched her for a reaction, permission, something.
She looked up. “Then take one,” she said professionally, almost coldly.
He shuddered at her warmthless voice and opened the door. The hallway was suddenly a lot more inviting than his office, and most other heroes didn’t give him any more trouble other than glares. He made his way to the first floor. He was almost at the vending machine to get his usual granola bar when he was stopped by a thick hand on his shoulder.
“Well, Anxiety, so good to see you,” a man boomed high above Virgil’s head.
Virgil silently cursed his luck. Why did it have to be Chad, of all people? He was very much a jerk, and he only got through the ranks of the agency because of nepotism. At least, that was what everyone thought. Virgil had seen Chad fight, and he was afraid of Chad. He was the stereotypical jock of the agency, which was saying a lot.
“Hi, Chad,” Virgil said. He tried to walk away, but Chad’s hand kept him firmly in place. He wondered why Chad of all people had to have super strength, but that’s how the universe went. Virgil had heard Chad’s soul mate’s power was to weaken others. Balance, Virgil supposed.
Chad’s grip on Virgil tightened, bringing Virgil out of thought. “I heard about the Code Orange,” he said. Some heroes started to take notice of the scrawny 21-year-old and the jacked 30 something by the vending machine.
Now, Virgil knew he was lucky to be at his polite, well-mannered agency, but that didn’t mean that fights between heroes still didn’t happen. He had heard about an argument that escalated into a full-on brawl, but the heroes had telekinesis and pyrokinesis, so naturally, the fight was destructive.
“I see,” Virgil said politely.
“Are you soul mates with Logic?”
Virgil winced at Chad’s fingernails digging into his shoulder, and he was sure that Chad was using his power. He needed to defuse the situation before it turned into a fight, but if he wanted to not cause a scene, he had to stall for time. He subtly started to adjust the gravity around them.
“What?” Virgil asked innocently. In his peripheral vision, he saw a figure in black and grey. He hoped that was who he thought it was. “Yeah, I thought it was obvious by now.” Virgil heard some dramatic gasps the shouts of his colleagues, and perhaps the exasperated sigh of some after Dot fainted. Again.
“You’re not going to betray the heroes for that scum, are you?” Chad spat.
“No,” Virgil said as calmly as he could. The black and grey outline started to come closer, and Virgil’s and Chad’s feet were almost off of the ground.
After that happened, Virgil would have the advantage. Chad would have to float aimlessly about. And if he wanted to go anywhere, let alone fight, he would have to push himself. Considering Chad’s power, that would be very destructive, and with all of the precious or dangerous items in the building, even Chad’s father wouldn’t be able to pay that amount of money. All of this banked on whether or not Chad could figure this out, and Chad wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box. That’s where they came in.
“No,” Virgil repeated a little louder. “Really the opposite!” With that, they shot off of the floor, and Virgil was once again thankful for the high ceilings and the interior balconies of other floors. Before Chad could do anything, Virgil wiggled out of his grasp and dropped himself off at the second floor.
“Hey!” Chad roared and tried to sprint after Virgil but he propelled himself upside down.
“Chad, don’t!” Elliot yelled from the ground.
Chad grumbled loudly, but he knew he couldn’t do anything. Elliot was 90% of Chad’s impulse control.
With light feet, Virgil sprinted down the halls into his office. He almost ran past his door. He quickly opened his office, shut the door behind him, and locked it with his keys. He trembled with nerves and panted from exhaustion.
Imani quickly sat up straight. “What happened?” she said, shocked.
“Everything,” Virgil gasped in between puffs. “But more precisely, Chad.”
Envy looked around the dark and dirty street around him. A few shady people milled about the place as Envy looked down at the piece of paper in his hand. He entered into Killer Koffee warily and looked around at the black sofas with suspiciously red splatters. “Hello,” he greeted the grumpy barista. He pretended to squint at the menu as if he wasn’t already instructed on what drink to get. “I would like a mocha with whip cream, extra sugar, and hold the milk.”
The barista raised an eyebrow. “Who is it for?”
Envy smiled. “Phthonus.”
“Well then,” the barista said, “right this way, sir.” She led him into the back of the store, where only employees could enter. The employee led the villain into a broom closet and shut the door behind Envy, almost nipping his heels.
“Code word?” a man chirped in a dreadfully cheerful manner. Envy could almost see the spy’s glasses highlighted in the dark closet and shivered. People like the spy in front of him always intimidated him.
“Confucius,” Envy answered. “Now, what’s the info?”

getting surprised by a nose kiss for corbin/sloane :D
But of course, my dear violet! /platonic
Warnings: none that I'm aware of
Blind Date
Blind dates weren't exactly Corbin's thing. He'd never liked the idea of going out with someone who he hadn't ever talked to before. What if they had nothing in common? What if the other person was unbelievably racist? Or panphobic? Or aphobic? What if they ran out of things to talk about? What if they just ended up hating him?
But here he was, sitting at a table, in a restaurant, waiting for a friend of a friend who had said, "Sloane is a great guy, you'll get along great!" and then immediately booked them reservations at his favorite restaurant.
Corbin looked around the restaurant, then back down at his watch. This Sloane was almost ten minutes late. Five minutes, he could understand it being traffic or some other hold up, but ten was stretching it. Corbin decided to give it another five minutes before he decided this was a waste of time.
No sooner than he'd decided that did a white person in a somewhat wrinkled suit rush in through the front door. They spoke to the hostess, who pointed in Corbin's direction. The person looked at Corbin and smiled wide at him as they started walking over. Corbin gave an awkward smile back.
"Corbin, right?" they asked as they put their hand on the back of the chair across from him.
Corbin nodded, not really sure what to make of the person in front of him.
Their grin somehow got even bigger, and they pulled the chair out. "Cool! I'm Sloane, he/him, and it's so nice to meet you! Roman's told me so much about you!"
Corbin felt the corner of his mouth twitch into a more genuine smile. "He has?"
Sloane nodded eagerly as he scooted his chair in closer. "Yeah! And I'm really so sorry about being late, it's just that I left later than I should have, and then there was this one light that took forever to turn green, and then after that, the person in front of me just wouldn't go..."
Sloane kept going on and on, one topic leading into another, then another, and soon he was talking about work and family, and for some reason, Corbin found it hopelessly endearing.
And then when Sloane turned the conversation over to Corbin ("Oh goodness, I've been taking up the whole conversation, I wanna hear about you!"), he listened. He sat there, and listened to Corbin talk with this adorable fond look on his face, only occasionally interrupting with "aww"s and "no way"s and "oh my gosh"es where appropriate, and god if Corbin didn't find himself more and more attracted to this guy as the night went on.
They stayed at the restaurant pretty late into the evening, talking about life, shows they were into, politics (which Corbin was pleasantly surprised to find that Sloane agreed with him that if you couldn't talk about politics on a date with someone, then what was the point of getting to know them), and pretty much anything they could think of.
As they were leaving, Corbin decided to take the initiative and said, "I really had a great time tonight. Can I give you my number so that we can maybe set up a second date?"
Sloane gasped and pulled out his phone, almost shoving it into Corbin's hands "Of course! Oh my gosh, I'd love to go out with you again!"
Corbin smiled and put his number into Sloane's phone, then handed it back.
Sloane grinned and leaned toward Corbin.
Wait, was this happening? Was Sloane going to try and kiss him right now?
But instead of the lips, Sloane placed a tiny kiss on the tip of Corbin's nose, then pulled away and said, "I'll text you!"
Corbin felt heat rise up on his cheeks and really hoped that Sloane couldn't tell that he was blushing right now. "Yeah, sounds good."

Ok so I’m feeling very emotional about Dr. Emile Picani so here we go
I just love how respected he is. The weakest reputation he has with his clients are probably Corbin and Sloane (also known as Corne). When Corbin asks Sloane where he’s heard of this guy Sloane simply replies internet. Which 1) is hilarious and 2) does show that Picani is well known enough for him to come up as an option and seem to be the best person for them to talk to, at least in their price range.
Then there’s Larry and Dot. They were actually recommended to go there by a friend. Specially Dot says “Listen, Shelly told me this guy is a great therapist! His practices are a little unique, but he gets great results!” They come in there bc they received a glowing recommendation from a friend and Picani is well known enough for them to know a friend who would say this.
Then Kai and Lauren (Kai’s girlfriend if anyone doesn’t remember). We have Lauren really talking Picani up, “Kai I’m just trying to help, and he’s a really good doctor, and I think it would do you some good to talk to somebody.” Not only is Picani recommended by previous patients, but he’s has a reputation as a good doctor! Someone who has a large enough reputation that his name actually means something
Why is this making me emotional? Because we see all this but then Picani comes in and it’s this guy
Tumblr media
He’s loud, weird, and he likes cartoons. He’s allowed to be silly and goofy. But that never takes away from him being an incredibly capable therapist. He’s one of the best and he pushes all the characters to be more honest with themselves. It’s so incredibly rare to see a character like Picani not being taken entirely as a joke. It’s so refreshing to see a character that is allowed to have fun but doesn’t take away from him being a capable adult

How It All Began
Chapter Six: Precious
Masterpost | First | Previous | Next | Ao3
Story Summary: Remus, son of a simple fisherman, had worked hard to become the captain of his own pirate ship. And in his humble opinion, it was going great! His crew was small but reliable and they had just stolen something that could them some nice cash from a military vessel they happened to cross on the open sea. They just needed to hide it somewhere until it was safe to sell. How lucky for them that they come across a nice, uninhabited island.
Little did Remus know just who he would find on that little piece of land and how it would change his life entirely.
Content Warning: Bickering, Sex as a Conversation Topic, Exploration of Ruins
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Would you stop staring in the water, Pat! Just relax, everything is fine!” Remus called over from the steering wheel. Their chef had been at the railing for the past hour, watching the waves as if he could see an impending attack if he looked hard enough. They were about three hours into Siren territory now and so far none of them had seen a single scaled tail. The runes seemed to be working.
“But..!” Patton tried to protest but Remus cut him off.
“No buts! Go prepare dinner or something if it has you so on edge.”
“Oh, let him watch, Capt’n,” Remy commented from the other side of the deck, himself staring at the waves. “It won’t do any harm.”
“Don’t tell me you’re also scared,” Remus deadpanned. Remy looked over, his dark-tinted glasses for once pushed down his nose but he was too far away for Remus’ to see his eyes properly. His first mate quickly turned away, pushing the frame back into place.
“Nah, just curious. Always wanted to see a siren, you know how it is. Actually kinda surprised you’re not down here with us.”
“Corbin needs to take breaks you know,” Remus shrugged. Patton, now having wandered over to Remy, huffed.
“He’s already met one, so he doesn’t need to look anymore.”
“Wait, hold on, pause!” Remy yelled, looking between Patton and his captain. “What the fuck do you mean he’s met one already?!”
“Language!” Pat protested but Remy ignored him in favor of leaning on his shoulder.
“C’mon, spill the tea!”
“I… can’t?”
“The hell does that mean?!”
“Uhm…” Patton looked sheepish that he had let Remus’ secret slip in a moment of irritation caused by worry.
“Don’t crowd him, Remy,” Remus called. “I told him not to say anything.” An offended noise left Remy’s throat before he stalked over to the captain.
“Talk,” he demanded. Remus snorted.
“It’s not that big a deal.”
“Of course it is! You once said you would burn down your hometown if it meant meeting a siren!”
“I don’t even care that much for my hometown.” He pushed down the impulse to reach for his locket at the mention of his old home. There was nothing for him there anymore.
“Stop making excuses!”
“Fine, fine,” Remus relented, having had his fun teasing his friend. “The riddle thing? Got it from the siren on that island. It’s gonna lead to some fun for all of us if we do it right.” Remy raised his brow, signaling him to continue. “That’s all you’re getting for now.”
“You suck,” Remy deadpanned.
“Get off my ship then.”
“You’re not getting rid of me that easy.”
“Didn’t think so.” They stared at each other for a moment, both grinning, before Remy huffed and stepped away. Despite his glasses being in the way, he could practically see him roll his eyes which was kinda a way for Remy to show his affection.
“Fine! Be like that. I’m gonna go take a nap.” With that he disappeared under deck. He acted all offended, but Remus could see him smile as he walked away. Patton had apparently left at some point as well, but Remus spotted Elliot sitting not far away, reading a book. Woodsworth’s book.
“Interesting read?” he asked, causing the other to flinch and look up, eyes wide. “Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you.”
“It’s fine!” Elliot protested immediately. They’ve been on the ship for a while now but still seemed to feel somewhat awkward around Remus in particular. “I was just so immersed; I didn’t really notice you taking over the wheel.”
“Being able to focus is a good thing,” Remus nodded, his eyes mostly trained on the horizon but flickering towards both Elliot and the compass occasionally. “Will keep you alive in stressful situations. Learn anything particularly interesting?”
“Oh, uhm…” Elliot flipped through some pages before they stopped and read a paragraph again to confirm that they understood the text correctly. “According to this, Sirens don’t have the same family structures as we do, since they don’t reproduce like us. They’re created by the Spirits and are incapable of having children actually.” Remus paused.
“But they can fuck, right?”
Elliot sputtered, turning red.
“I think so, but it hasn’t been actually addressed. At least not as far as I’ve read.”
“Huh. Keep me posted on that then.”
“Alright, Captain.” They didn’t look enthusiastic, but Remus wasn’t about to read that entire book himself. And it would do them some good to loosen up a bit.
“Go and fetch Corbin for me, I still have some stuff to prepare before we get to our destination.”
“Aye aye, Captain.” With hurried steps, Elliot walked away. Remus hummed, wondering if Logan would be able to give him a Siren sex ed lesson sometime. Left alone on deck, he pulled out his locket, idly fiddling with it to keep his one hand busy while the other ensured they stayed on course. It helped him focus and keep a clear mind. Too bad he wouldn’t be able to use it for that much longer.
~~~
The sun was setting by the time Coal Black Peak came into view, so Remus and his crew anchored some distance from shore and went to bed to start their excursion the next day. Emile, Patton and Missy had decided to stay on the ship – well, Emile and Missy had, Patton was ordered to stay behind because he looked like he hadn’t slept a wink. He tried to protest, but Remus held firm and Emile was put in charge of making sure he would get some rest.
Remy, Toby, Sloane, Corbin and Elliot all wanted to come along. The first three because it seemed more exciting than staying on the ship again and the latter two because they were interested in the temple the note had mentioned. It seemed Elliot had discovered an interest in history during their hours in the library. Remus was happy they had found a hobby.
They set over to land in two rowboats, making sure to tie them both securely once on shore since no one wanted to stay back to guard them. Considering how deep they were in Siren territory, it was unlikely that anyone would mess with them anyway. Then their long track began.
Remus figured the island was once inhabited, considering they were on their way to visit a temple. However, there weren’t many signs of a civilization left. They passed some stones with carvings on them that might have been idols or signs, but they were too overgrown and/or faded to clearly make out. While they had landed on the island not too far from the volcano, their track toward a cliff that gave them a good look at the mountain had taken them nearly two hours. The air was humid, their path steep and they were all sweating a lot.
“Where the fuck… are we even going?” Remy huffed, wiping his forehead to keep his eyes free from the moisture dripping down his head. Remus observed the volcano for a moment, trying to make out any kind of structure that might be a temple.
“The note said that there would be a temple on the mountain’s side, so we’re looking for a building of some sort, I think.”
“You think?! Gurl, I thought you knew what you were doing!”
“I read the note to you quite a few times, Remy, you got as much info as I did. You could have stayed on the ship if you didn’t want to come.”
“I thought this was going to be interesting! Not a marathon!”
“Stop complaining,” Toby grumbled. He was the fittest out of all of them and seemingly the least bothered by the climate. Elliot next to him looked a lot worse for wear. Toby handed them a waterskin which they gladly accepted.
“I tried to find more detailed records about this island,” Corbin chimed in, having regained his breath. “But there wasn’t much I could dig up. Apparently, this place is one of worship to the Spirits going back to the time before we had records. The few ‘civilized’”–he did use air quotes as he said it–“people that were here were run off quickly. The reports we have of them speak of a native tribe, but they weren’t friendly to intruders and when the hostilities between humans and the Spirits escalated, the surrounding sea was quickly claimed by the Sirens and no one has been recorded to have made it back here since. There was a brief mention of the temple but only in terms of it having been built into the mountainside close to the natives’ village.”
“Well, that tells us at least that it should be visible from the outside, right?” Sloane said from his place sitting on the ground next to his boyfriend.
“It doesn’t sound like it’s hidden on purpose, yeah,” Toby agreed.
“It might’ve collapsed though. Then we might never find it.”
“Stop being a downer, Remy,” Sloane groaned.
“The note wouldn’t have led us here if we couldn’t get into the temple,” Remus agreed. “And if we keep going around the mountain, we should find it eventually.”
“But that could take the whole day!” Remy whined. Toby smacked him in the arm.
“Go back to the ship if you’re too weak to see this through.”
“I’m not weak!”
“Prove it.”
“Fine! I’ll find the temple first!” Remy stalked off, a grinning Toby close behind.
“They are incorrigible,” Corbin sighed, as he helped Sloane back on his feet. The two of them followed the others, hands intertwined.
“Gross, open affection,” Remus joked, looking towards Elliot, who snorted lightly. “Let’s go before Remy and Toby actually try to race.”
~~~
Sloane ended up being the one to spot the rather large stone structure of the temple about half an hour later. It stood in a crevice of the mountain, overgrown by the surrounding plant life. It took them another four hours to arrive in front of it. On the way they had passed what could only have been the remnants of the former tribe’s village. From Corbin’s estimation, it had been abandoned several hundred years ago.
“I wonder what happened here,” Elliot mumbled as they took in the crumbling structure in front of them. “I mean, they didn’t just leave, right? Something must have caused them to disappear.”
“We know little of their culture, just that they didn’t take kindly to visitors,” Corbin shrugged.
“I mean, they do live next to a volcano. That could’ve had something to do with it.” Corbin rolled his eyes at his boyfriend’s comment but didn’t argue.
“Well, no use standing around here, let’s go in!” Remus grinned. He was excited to see where this would lead, even if he knew he had to give up something ‘precious’ at the end. It would be worth it to see Logan again.
“That looks like it could collapse any second,” Remy spoke up, eyebrow raised.
“So?” Toby asked, apparently in the mood to rile up the First Mate today.
“I don’t feel like getting buried alive, thanks.”
“You can stay here then. If you’re too much of a coward to go in.”
“Fuck off, I just don’t have a death wish.”
“Chicken.”
“Gurl, I’m so close to punching you in the face.”
“Try it, I dare you.”
“You’re both pretty, now zip it!” Remus huffed, pushing the two apart. They grumbled but didn’t argue further. “Nothing’s going to collapse, I promise. Let’s go.”
“How can you be so sure?” Corbin asked as they all followed their captain through the columns that marked the temple’s entrance.
“Like I said: The note wouldn’t have led us here if we couldn’t complete the task. It’s a test not a trick to kill us.”
“A test from who?”
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
“Fucking cryptic bullshit,” Remy mumbled at his side. Remus rolled his eyes but didn’t comment. He didn’t feel like arguing with him today. At least he seemed to respect Remus’ orders of not telling the rest of the crew the truth about where the riddle came from yet, even if he technically only told Patton not to say anything.
The inside of the temple wasn’t huge but for a structure built several hundred years ago, it was pretty impressive. The sun shone through cracks in the ceiling, illuminating their path. It was an empty space mostly, no furniture or statues or anything that could be described as decoration left. Or maybe it had never been there in the first place. But, same as on the outside, the wildlife had reclaimed the space with lots of plants growing along the floor, walls, and occasional columns.
Corbin and Elliot split off to inspect the walls, Sloane trailing behind them though more focused on the ceiling. Through the green covering the surfaces, Remus could make out carvings, so he left them alone to explore. There didn’t really seem to be any way for them to get lost, since he couldn’t see any doorways to lead to different rooms. It was just a big hall. The ‘heart’ the note spoke off was probably in the back then. He continued forward, Remy and Toby followed.
The deeper they went, the less sun managed to break through. It wasn’t bad enough to try and light a torch, but it did drive Remy to lower his glasses. Remus was pretty sure they must be under the mountain now, but he couldn’t make out the ceiling and the walls looked to still be the same stone from before. They walked forward for a good two minutes when something started to glow in front of them.
It was a pool of water, perfectly circular, that clearly reflected its surroundings while emitting a soft, cyan light.
“This is freaky,” Remy whispered.
“It’s a holy place, you moron,” Toby hissed back.
“It’s what we were looking for, that’s for sure,” Remus hummed. Unlike his companions, he didn’t force himself to be quiet. Sure, this was a temple, but from what Logan had told him, the Spirits didn’t care much for being revered by humans. They weren’t deities after all, at least not in the way the human gods were.
“Well, which one of you two wants to be the sacrifice?”
“Excuse you?” Remy scoffed.
“I’m out.” To make his point clear, Toby took a step back.
“What? I need to offer my ‘precious’ to the heart of the temple, and what could ever be more precious to me than my crew?”
“Fuck that, I’m not going in there.” Remy joined Toby in putting physical distance between him and Remus. The captain snorted.
“I’m just fucking with you guys, like they would ever want a human sacrifice.” Remy looked at him unimpressed, which Remus could just make out in the light glow of the water. Sadly, Remy had also put on his glasses again. He would catch a glimpse of his eyes one day.
“What are you going to use then?” his First Mate asked in slight annoyance. Remus shrugged.
“There’s only one thing I could use. Not like I could fit our ship in here.” He pulled off the chain dangling around his neck, showing it to Remy.
“You sure?” he asked, eyebrows raised. “That’s like, your one heirloom though.”
“Yeah,” Remus mumbled, stroking the locket sides. It was the only thing he had left of his parents, the one thing his father refused to take off until he pressed it into Remus’ hand on his deathbed, while he gave their mother’s to Roman. Logan’s pained expression as he listened to him recount the story flashed through his mind. “That’s exactly why it needs to be this.”
“Ro’s gonna kill you if he finds out.”
“I know.” Without further preamble, Remus held out the locket over the water and let go. It hit the surface with a low plop and he watched as it sank out of sight. It stung his chest to watch it disappear, but he had steeled himself for this moment their entire journey here. He took a deep breath and waited.
For a few moments, nothing happened.
Then a rumble.
“I knew it! It’s gonna collapse!” Remy swore, looking ready to take off. Toby held him back.
“Chill, nothing’s collapsing. It’s just an old mechanism activating. We’ll be fine.”
The water of the pool rippled and a chest rose out of its depths. For a moment, Remus hoped that his locket would come up with it, but no. It was gone and he would deal with the pain of losing it later.
The chest, made from stone, thankfully wasn’t locked. Inside, Remus found a star chart. It was too dark to make out much detail, but he could hazard a guess as to where it would lead him. Satisfied, he rolled it up and secured it on his belt.
“Alright, we got what we came here for. Let’s get out of here, I’d like to be back on the ship before sundown.” He made his way back to the entrance, Remy and Toby fell in step with him quickly after.
“You sure you’re good?” Remy asked, genuine concern in his voice. Remus took a moment before answering, drawing in another deep breath.
“I will be. Now let’s get our amateur archeologists and leave.”
“Patton better have some good food for us when we get back,” Remy huffed, trying to lighten the mood probably. “I need compensation after the day we had.”
“Again, you could’ve gone back to the ship,” Toby quipped.
“Would you get off my dick, musclehead!” The two started to bicker and Remus was grateful for the distraction. He would grieve later when he was alone in his cabin. For now, he could focus on making sure the two idiots didn’t kill each other.
