Cyborg She, Emotional and Entertaining

In my twenties, I was in a phase where I delighted in East Asian films and dramas. People that I know keep recommending films like Battle Royale, and dramas like Boys Before Flowers. Having grew up in Canada where the culture was to enjoy Hollywood movies, it was a nice change of pacing. To experience films and shows from different cultures was a good change.

After the release of the massively successful film, My Sassy Girl, director Kwak Jae-yong was a hot commodity in Corean cinema, and had the opportunity in the world to direct any Corean films he wanted. Instead, after he directed the prequel to said film, Windstruck, he decided to direct a romantic comedy for the Japanese film market. The film was Cyborg She, available on Apple TV+, a romantic comedy about a cyborg sent from the future and a loner. The silly premise of the film, invites an interesting story.

The film itself is heartwarming and fun. Like My Sassy Girl, the movie centers around an underdog of a character and the encounter to a strong female lead changes his world and now he has something to hope for. So if you like the type of story My Sassy Girl is, you will like this film.

The direction of the film by Kwak is charming and emotional. The plot tucks at the heart of the everyman that sees himself as this underdog. It is silly to think that you will find yourself falling in love with a cyborg, but, though not cyborg maybe a kindred spirit half way across the world. Kwak employs that distance we have with our lovers, not in the distance around the world, but a physical distance of being. Though the ground of the romance takes as is ridiculous, when you have nobody else in the world, maybe a cyborg companion may not seem that foolish to consider. As the plot progresses, you come to understand, that the female lead is actually the only one in the world that cares about him, having lost his only family, his mother, and even his hometown, destroyed in an earthquake. You come to think and empathise with the protagonist. 

Keisuke Koide plays the main character as Jiro Kitamura, while Haruka Ayase plays the cyborg. The two actors play a dynamic duo and there are chemistry and real emotion between the two. After developing feelings for one another, and an encounter with a wall that separates them, the cyborg unites with Jiro as she tries to save him. After the climax, we as the audience come to understand Jiro and the cyborg’s relationship; though there is a distance between them, there is also real love.

The film, overall, is charming and endearing. Some scenes I thought dig at what it means to have someone that loves you. And though you may not fall in love with a cyborg, we come to understand that though we may not agree with some relationships, love is not frivolous, especially when that love is all the person has. Cyborg She is emotional and entertaining, and worth your two hours.

Underplayer

I love this AU, and is a bit special to me cuz it was the first fandub I watched like EVER.

This AU is about a player, that loved Undertale so much, that they wanted to insert themselves into the game and become friends with everyone.

But after some time, they realize that inserting themselves into the game was going to be more difficult than they thought.

The comic was made by a corean author named Yunan

Currently watching : I’ve binge-watched a lot of TV shows lately : The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (this title is as hilarious as this show was) , The Afterparty (super creative and funny, watched it first for Tiffany Haddish but the plot and cast are actually great) , Euphoria season 2 (Which is awesome), Servant (just like Destiny, I love crazy rich white family occult dramas XD this one is wild), All of us are dead (an awesome corean drama with zombies on Netflix) and I’m rewatching The Leftovers on blu ray (this show is as traumatic as iconic). Oh and last season of Killing Eve who just started this week ♥

NY trip

Day one

(meeting Yesim and going to her apt by metro)

* 9/11 memorial and little NY tour

* Pizza in front of the brooklyn bridge watching the sunset

Day two:

-Russ and daughters café bagels

-East Village

-soho

-washington square park and chilling there

-MoMA while Yesim was at school and coming back home and watching tv

Day three:

-Brunch at this beautiful tiny place (I got pancakes and Yesim got quische)

-Walking around brooklyn

-reggaeton party and McDonalds after that

-fancy party with great view and indoor pool (wearing snickers)

Day Four

-Going for bagels around the corner

-Watching Pitch perfect and orphans black

-going for bubble tea and McDonalds icecream

-having dinner at a corean restaurant and then wine at Antya’s

Day Five

-having bagels for breakfast again

-going to Manhattan by ferry

-Having a good talk with Yesim about family and stuff

-Riding bikes around central park

-Chilling in CP and trying to take a good headshot of Yesim ♥️

A Brilliant Romantic Comedy

When I was sixteen and still in high school, someone from the circle of my brother’s friend came from Montreal and he recommended a Corean film to me. At the time, I did not know of the amazingness of Corean films. I was watching Hong Kong films at the time and did not know Corean films were just as great. The film was My Sassy Girl and that was nineteen years ago. But even so, I had watched it countless times since and is to this day still one of my favourite Corean films, if not the favourite. 

If you are interested in watching it, the film is now on Apple TV+, given Apple has just bought the rights to showcase non-English films from all around the world, one of them being from the Corean film industry. 

My Sassy Girl is the quintessential Corean romantic comedy. Though now the Corean film industry is in prominence given the Best Picture win at the Oscars for Parasite and the huge success of Squid Game, it is not always so. At the time, though East Asian films from Hong Kong and maybe even Japan, have audiences from all over the world, not so with Corean. The Corean film industry at the time is known very little outside of the Pacific region. And the film for me that has changed all of that, like many people outside of that region, is My Sassy Girl. 

The film stars Jun Ji-hyun as the titled character and Cha Tae-hyun as our protagonist, Kyun-woo. It starts with the recounting of the bad luck he has had with the encounters with the Girl. From one bad luck to another, he gradually falls in love with her. The comedy that has been written into the film is brilliantly funny and charming. You cannot help but feel and care for this loser Kyun-woo as he tries desperately to please the Girl, not for the urge to impress her, but as he say, “to not be murdered by her”. And after about a third way through the movie, you lose yourself in the romance and the stupidity of the odd couple that you start rooting for them to be together. 

The two leading characters are brilliantly played by Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun. They are stark opposites in terms of temperament and personality. Kyun-woo is this charming idiot that always manages to make you laugh at his misfortunes when dealing with the Girl. And the Girl is this sassy and feisty girl you cannot help but care for. They are the perfect couple and their romance is genuine and real. Their love for each other starts out as this strange relationship but as the plot starts rolling you can definitely tell it is real and endearing.

The comedy in the film is the type of stupid comedy that I love. No, I do not mean that the writing is stupid, but the two leading characters are so preposterous and foolish that you cherish the stupidity of it all. Eventually, by the second half, they face opposition and conflict. Their charming relationship becomes heartfelt and emotional, even sad at times. There are scenes in this film that are both beautiful as they are iconic; like the scenes when the Girl shouts to Kyun-woo from across the mountain; and the recurring scenes with the lonely tree on a mountaintop. These scenes are both prepossessing and beautiful. 

Now even after over two decades since its release, My Sassy Girl still remains steadfast in Corean cinema. It is funny. It is fun. It is brilliant. And it is brilliantly written. I can only praise this film not just as an icon in Corean films, but as a truly classic romantic comedy that the world should give a viewing of.

K-drama and books. Lista di libri per fan dei K-drama coreani

Ebbene sì, dopo anni di resistenza, di occhi troppo stanchi per leggere sottotitoli, di incapacità di concentrarmi senza lasciarmi distrarre dalle voci a volte parecchio sopra le righe degli attori, finalmente sono riuscita a vedere qualche K- Drama, e devo dire che il genere mi sta piacendo molto.

Visto i miei gusti letterari non sapete quante persone mi abbiano consigliato negli anni di guardare i K-Drma , ma giuro che non ci riuscivo, poi quest’anno dopo aver visto Squid Game il miracolo. Qualcosa ha fatto clic nel mio cervello e ora riesco a seguirli. Non chiedetemi come e perchè, ma è così.

E visto che il genere mi ha preso tanto mi son detta che potevo trarne un bel post, creando una lista di libri secondo me adatta appunto agli amanti dei K-Drama (ossia serie tv sud coreane/asiatiche).

Se amate i K- Drama non potrete non amare questi libri, garantito.

Lo straordinario viaggio di Edward Tulane

Questo libro non ha ispirato un k-drama, ma è citato molte volte dal protagonista del famosissimo drama coreano My Love from the star, un vero classico del genere, perciò meritava un posto in questa lista.

Trama: "Se vuoi essere amato, prima devi imparare ad amare". Una volta, in una casa in Egypt Street, viveva un coniglio di nome Edward Tulane. Il coniglio era estremamente soddisfatto di se stesso, e per molte buone ragioni: apparteneva a una bambina di nome Abilene che lo adorava e lo trattava con ogni cura. Ma poi, un giorno, il coniglio andò perduto e iniziò per lui un lungo viaggio straordinario, dal fondo dell'oceano alla rete di un pescatore, da un mucchio di spazzatura al falò di un campo di vagabondi, dal capezzale di una bambina malata alle strade di Memphis. E strada facendo ci mostra un vero miracolo: come perfino un cuore fragile può imparare ad amare, a soffrire, e amare di nuovo. Una delle citazioni più famose di questo libro è: “Se non hai intenzione di amare o essere amato, allora l’intero viaggio sarà inutile.”

I sette killer dello Shinkansen

Autore: Kotaro Isaka

Da questo romanzo non è stato tratto un K-drama, ma da altre opere di questo autore sì, e da questo comunque arriverà un film di Hollywood prossimamente, perciò dovevo citarlo. Anche per dimostrare che esistono drama coreani di ogni genere, non solo romantici, ma anche ricchi di suspance, penso ad esempio a Flower of evil.

Trama: Un treno partito da Tōkyō e lanciato a trecento all'ora nella campagna giapponese. Una valigia piena di soldi nascosta in una delle carrozze. E sette assassini pronti a entrare in azione. Molti K-drama intrecciano scuola, sport, sogni di gloria e primi amori, ad esempio Strong Girl, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo , questo libro della Callihan intreccia gli stessi temi solo in modo più hot, ma la base in fondo è quella

Trama: Anna Jones è determinata a finire il college per scrollarsi di dosso le insicurezze dell'adolescenza e riuscire, finalmente, a trovare la sua strada nella vita. Nessuna distrazione, tanto impegno e un solo proposito: tenere alla larga il quarterback superstar del college che continua a lanciarle sguardi infuocati a la attrae disperatamente. Drew Baylor ha un luminoso futuro davanti a sé: quarterback di talento per un college prestigioso, è pronto al grande salto verso l'NFL. La notorietà, dentro e fuori dal campus, è parte di lui, anche se l'affascinante QB non sembra darci troppo peso. Ma non avrebbe mai pensato di incontrare, o peggio, di perdere la testa, per l'unica persona che sembra infastidita e intollerante alla sua fama. Una stella del football come Drew Baylor certamente sa come vincere una partita, ma riuscirà, a colpi di incontri bollenti, tanta dolcezza e perseveranza, a segnare il punto della vittoria nel cuore della sua irriverente Jones? Idol

Autore: Kristen Callihan

Altro tema tipico dei K-Drama è la presenza di star del K-Pop, gli Idol appunto, perciò questo libro già dal titolo si inserisce perfettamente nel contesto, un k-drama con argomento simile ad esempio è Twenty years old, un piccolo gioiellino

Trama: Leader e front-man della più grande rock band del mondo, Killian James è in crisi: in seguito ad un drammatico evento la sua vita perfetta si è sgretolata, e lui decide che sparire dalle scene per un po' sia la scelta migliore. Schiantarsi con la moto e svenire ubriaco fradicio in mezzo al nulla, nel prato della casa di una bella ragazza, solitaria quanto irascibile, però non è il modo migliore di cominciare il suo ritiro in solitudine. Nonostante Killian distrugga la tranquillità della vita da eremita di Liberty Bell, le loro strade non sembrano più destinate a separarsi.         

          Rock duro e puro

Autore: Nalini Singh

Altro tema caro ai K-Drama sono gli office romance, in stile What’s wrong with secretary Kim (che tra l’altro ha la stessa trama di base del romance storico di Laura Lee Guhrke E infine la baciò che io adoro e vi consiglio), perciò questo libro rosa contemporaneo di Nalini Singh è perfetto se amate questo tema e questo tipo di K-Drama

Trama: Gabriel Bishop, ex giocatore professionista di rugby con un record insuperabile di presenze in campo, dirige ora il consiglio di amministrazione della Saxon & Archer con la stessa determinazione che ha fatto di lui una rockstar sportiva. Gabriel è abituato a suscitare reazioni nel sesso femminile. In sua presenza le ragazze alte, sicure di sé e sexy assumono atteggiamenti seduttivi. Ma Gabriel è anche il classico tipo che sa quello che vuole: Charlotte Baird. Charlotte è timida come una topolina, la tipica ragazza normale che intende far bene il suo lavoro e vivere il più defilata possibile. Per lei Gabriel, oltre a essere il suo capo, è un vero e proprio T-Rex. Ma anche gli affari di lavoro a volte riservano imprevedibili piaceri... 

Contratto indecente

Autore: Jennifer Probst

Come poi non citare i k-drama con matrimoni a contratto, o convivenze forzate che poi sbocciano nel vero amore, tipo Full House o Marriage Contract o Because This is my first life, e quale libro per esemplificarli alla perfezione se non questo, che sì è molto più hot dei K-drama, ma è proprio centrato in pieno sull’argomento

Altro genere molto popolare di K-Drama sono quelli con elementi paranormal, con protagonisti vampiri come in Blood, esseri immortali come in Goblin, o persone che vedono i defunti come nei super famosi Master’s sun e Hotel de Luna e molto altro, e potrei citarvi molti romanzi con elementi paranormal che potrebbero piacervi se amate questo genere di drama, visto che buona parte del mio blog è dedicata proprio ai romanzi paranormal (quindi vi invito a spulciare tra le sue pagine e liste di libri), penso ad esempio a Se solo fosse vero di Marc Levy, ma ho deciso di optare per un titolo meno conosciuto ai più e che ha come protagonista una donna che vede appunto i fantasmi

Per chi invece ama i korean drama storici fantasy, come le Arthdal Chronicles ad esempio, non posso non sugerire la lettura della terza trilogia ambientata a Terre d’Ange di Jacqueline Carey, che vede la protagonista Moirin viaggiare proprio in versioni fantasy molto affascinanti della Cina e dell’Asia in generale e formata dai libri Naamah's Kiss, Naamah’s Curse e Naamah’s Blessing. Purtroppo solo il primo volume è disponibile in italiano, spezzato in due libri, ed è un vero peccato. Ma se potete leggerlo e leggere anche i suoi due seguiti ne vale veramente la pena.

Come decimo e ultimo libro di questa lista, in rappresentanza di quei K-Drama che affrontano temi sociali e di disagio, come lotte politiche o malattie, fisiche o mentali, in modo delicato e a volte anche metaforico o con un pizzico di oniricità, come It’s okay to not be okay, mi autocito con un romanzo che parla appunto di malattia mentale e mondi paralleli.

Trama: Diana ha perso cinque anni della sua vita. Vorrebbe che non fosse accaduto, ma non può cambiare il passato, né cancellare le cicatrici che le ha lasciato. Può solo ricominciare da capo. Costruirsi una nuova identità, trovare nuovi amici, un nuovo scopo, e nascondere a tutti il suo segreto.  Nessuno potrebbe mai immaginare che dietro i suoi abiti sempre coordinati, la sua quieta determinazione nello studio e l’abilità di creare dolci squisiti, si celi una paura che stenta a tenere a bada. Nemmeno Sebastiano, l’assistente del corso di giapponese che Diana ha iniziato da poco a seguire.Quando la guarda, lui vede solo una ragazza attraente, con gli occhi grigi più belli che abbia mai visto, ma quando lei lo guarda vede ciò che sta cercando disperatamente di lasciarsi alle spalle. Vede un incubo che le impedisce di dormire, un dolore che l’ha cambiata per sempre e che non vuole mai più provare. Amare è un rischio che non vuole correre di nuovo, ma la scelta non è unicamente nelle sue mani, e osare potrebbe permetterle di raggiungere un traguardo che non aveva mai neppure osato sognare.
