Psychologist argues for improved methods for Black American’s that have Substance Use Disorder, after review of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trial Network (CTN).
Hello, enjoy the article, “Psychologist argues for improved methods for Black American’s that have Substance Use Disorder, after review of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trial Network (CTN)”. i wonder why so many autistic or ADHD people have DID or OSDD. genuinely asking because a lot of diagnosed systems ive watched/read about have those disorders and even though D/Ds are caused by trauma i wonder if certain things raise the risk of the developing it in childhood
This is super interesting, thanks for the ask! There are actually a lot of theories regarding this, I’ll see if I can detail some of them I remember (though, it may look like I’m leaning more into autism, since I know more about it)!
1. People with ADHD and ASD are abused often.
The first one is a rather grim reality. It’s the least fun to acknowledge, but it’s important, do that’s why it’s number one. People with these disorders can often be traumatized by ‘normal’ parenting methods, and they are also often bullied. Repeated trauma leads to systems, and such it isn’t hard to imagine a kid, constantly being put down for being the way they are from a young age, developing a dissociative disorder.
2. People with ASD or ADHD often look toward escapism.
Many people on the spectrum can report that they can fall to daydreaming and idealization, often due to severe bullying and other mentioned things. Escapism and dissociation, from what I’ve heard, are being studied for a link currently, with both often being due to anxiety, which brings us to our next point...
3. Dissociation is often seen intertwined with ASD anyway.
People with ASD or ADHD are most commonly diagnosed with comorbid anxiety disorders, and dissociation is a huge symptom in anxiety. This common cormobidity certainly ups the risk of kids with these disorders to develop a dissociative disorder.
4. Masking is pushed onto children with ASD often.
This is my personal favourite. While all the others have some degree of overlap, this one specifically has to do with explaining why a split would occur. Oftentimes kids with ADHD or ASD need to learn how to mask, how to blend in, how to ‘be normal’. This can often be pushed on them in extremely toxic ways, though, and obviously, taking away stimming from someone on the spectrum can be extremely distressing and poor for the person’s help.
Because of this, splitting could occur. If you’re not able to learn how to not stim, might as well have someone else figure it out. If you can’t look someone in the eyes, why not become someone who can? I’m tired so I can’t explain perfectly, but I think this part is intrinsically related to the comorbidity.
Anyway, like I said, I’m kind of tired now, but I’m excited to see if anyone has anything to add. This is a super fun topic and I support you in your quest!

Is sensory problems an adhd thing too cuz like. One of my nail polish removers feels fine, and the other (acetone free) one feels wrong and gives me the shivers when i use it. It has the wrong texture... which is dumb and makes no sense bc it's a LIQUID
Sensory problems are an adhd thing yeah!
Sensory problems can also be a cormobidity of autism too!

also i was being overly simplistic for comedy’s sake but even if i don’t do that it’s still incredible—some antidepressants don’t work as well as they’re advertised, especially if you have comorbid diagnoses, and for some people none of them work at all. imagine that the shopkeeper gives you a belt of healing potions, but warns you that if you take both slashing and bludgeoning damage the potions are less likely to do anything, and that you might be within the small percentage of his clientele who are completely resistant to healing
anything to do with the brain is an inexact science, and the biological model sucks donkey butt, but the strings of that model are still very deeply woven into how we treat anything under the Vague Antidepressant Category and it’s super frustrating. med treatment with SSRIs is only like 40% effective for people with ocd, without cormobid diagnoses! if someone gave me an antibiotic and told me it was only going to be about 40% effective and might also turbo-trigger one of my other problems i would not put that in my body and yet here i am

hmm
the more i think about it, the more i realize that i might actually have rejection sensitivity dysphoria. like i know it’s exclusively an add/adhd thing but asd usually has high cormobidity with adhd (plus add/adhd runs on one side of my family) and it would just make so much sense
especially since rsd is eerily similar to bpd/avpd in a sense and just after doing tons of research on it, i found something that really describes the emotions and physical sensations i feel from my rejection sensitivity to a t.
because let’s face it, constantly feeling like you’re a bother/annoying/hated isn’t common and getting upset and paranoid over trivial things (someone forgets to reply to you for  something but answers everyone else) is really abnormal. like you know it’s not true but whatever triggered the emotion is much stronger and hence, the bad thoughts are battling against your rationality to create a false reality (and hence cause deep depression).
i also definitely think how you were treated during your childhood and your life growing up plays a huge factor as well, especially if you were also bullied, always left out a lot, always picked last when it comes to games, no one immediately sought you out for partner/group work, etc.
i do think rsd itself should be expanded upon too and be branched out into other nd types as well since i feel more than one nd branch can have it

i knew i shouldnt have come back to this stupid ass website when i read  that having ADHD automatically makes you autistic, and that OCD is an autistic tendency
they can be comorbid definitely but having OCD doesnt inherently make you  autistic, being ADHD doesnt inherently make you autistic, why is tumblr coming up with this. cormobidity doesnt mean.. ugh
just stop. please. some of y’all make me want to die lmfao
