ahhh that’s so cool that you run a shelter! i’m an equine rvt and am totally in love with it, i definitely feel you on never wanting to do anything else. hopefully you can figure something out for your schooling if you decide to go that route!
omg I love that thats so cool !!! I used to be torn about large vs small animal practice but now that I run a rescue I would definitely go the small animal route. if I could go to vet school just to study cat medicine that's literally what I would do LMFAO

My latest creation:
Tumblr media
I made this two-piece outfit for our Hunger Games theme party. Instead of going literal and recreating a gown or outfit from one of the movies, I decided to just create a bold and eye-catching look. The skirt and top are from a Vogue pattern I picked up a few years ago. When I brought the pattern, I bought the houndstooth as well knowing that would be a good look but wasn't sure what to do for the top. Those of you who have known me for a while might be thinking that color combo looks familiar on me.
Tumblr media
It's not just a repeat of my wedding gown colors, the top is made with the same fabric as the sash! The sash pieces were long, leaving lots of usable leftover fabric; more than enough to make a top.
The tiny mirrors were inspired by a dress I saw in an ad from Sak's. I've worked with sequins quite a bit and often have people who think I sewed each sequin on individually rather than buying a fabric covered in sequins. Well, this time I did hand sew each individual mirror.
Tumblr media
I'm kind of against hand sewing since a machine does most things better and will use embroidery needles for hand tasks because they're blunter and have larger eyes. But this fabric was too fine so I had to bust out the tiny and sharp hand needles.
Which brings me to the disaster portion of my story...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10:30 pm Friday night, I had put the sewing project down next to me on the couch for a minute to look at my phone. All week I'd been sewing leaned over to one side so Charlie could snuggle in my lap while I work. My obliques were sore enough that I was trying to remember which move in which workout I'd done this week that get that way. None. I was just sitting crooked all week to accommodate snuggle boi.
So! My sewing was on the couch right next to me, with the thread and needle dangling off the edge. I use the double thread technique so the needle is secured and can't come off without breaking the thread. And I catch Charlie chomping on that dangling thread. I scold him and grab the thread and pull. But he pulled back and the thread snapped. And he ran away. At once I'm thinking, "where's the needle?" And start checking the floor where he'd been standing. Michael heard me holler so he went to the cat and saw Charlie gagging in the hall. A little saliva or bile was coughed up but no needle! Now I'm absolutely freaking out and calling the emergency vet only to find out they're not just closed for the evening, they're closed until Sunday. And I read about what happens if your cat ingests something sharp like a needle and now neither Michael or I can go to sleep.
The cat was acting normal so we did go to bed (but not until two am) and I talked to his regular vet first thing in the morning. And we pack up and go to the emergency vet at Cornell over an hour away. And of course Charlie poops in his crate while I'm driving so I have to clean that up in a Burger King parking lot that I knew was right off the 81 in Tully.
The vets were able to see Charlie, take an x-ray, and determine that the needle could likely be removed via endoscopy. Meanwhile, I still need to finish sewing these tiny mirrors for the party the same night. So I'm the crazy lady who's like, "My cat swallowed a sewing needle!" All while continuing to sew with another needle with the same characteristics in the waiting room. I even pulled it out in the exam room with the vet to show the way the needle was attached to the thread and describe how the thread would have to have broken in two places for the cat to have swallowed thread as well.
Seeing the x-ray with the needle was kind of a relief. Up until then, part of me thought maybe the needle was lost in the carpet at home and I was overreacting. Nope, this naughty boy did in fact swallow the needle and spending the day at the vet was the correct choice.
Tumblr media
Here's my healthy boi, needle free, happy and recovering at home. We finally got to leave Cornell around four pm, after Charlie woke up from anesthesia. The endoscopy doc offered me the needle to take home but I politely declined. I was excited to see it though. They also confirmed no trauma to the esophagus or stomach, so he's going to recover well.
Moral of the story: don't let your cat swallow a sewing needle.

Late-career Cornell Woolrich is odd.  (With more merit, I suspect, than most people give him credit for, but still, odd.)
It’s going to be a while before I formally tackle any of his later works.

3am Calls — Trevor Zegras
Tumblr media
Summary: In which following your hurtful breakup, you find yourself calling Trevor with your unanswered questions.
Summary; Angst without happy ending, cheating(trevor), body insecurities, low self esteem, depression, Jamie Drysdale kind of being a douche, heartbreak, Mid/plus size reader, Dixie Damelio slander(sorry)
Pairing: Trevor Zegras & Reader
You’d met Trevor through his teammate Jamie, you’d gone to high school with him and had tutored him his sophomore year, which was your senior year. You hadn’t seen him since you graduated, until you moved to Anaheim. You had gone to Cornell Veterinary School and moved to Anaheim and opened a vet clinic. You were introduced to Trevor when Jamie brought Trevor’s dog, Louie in because he wasn’t eating and was vomiting blood. You had been administering medication when Trevor hurried in the room, “Jamie what the hell happened?” Jamie turner to his roommate , “Trevor this is Y/N the vet. Y/N this is Trevor, Louie’s his dog.”
You felt the wind leave your throat, “It seems he just had an allergic reaction to something he’s eaten. His breathing was a little shallow so I gave him some medication and I’m gonna prescribe some of it as I’m worried about his breathing.” Trevor’s eyes met you and a small smile on his face, “Thank you so much.” You smiled, “Just doing my job, hi baby.” You smiled lightly as Louie stirred on the table and rubbed his face against your hands. Trevor smiled at the scene in front of him, “I’m suprised, Lou doesn’t usually like new people.” Jamie grinned, “Oh she’s the master of animals loving her. She was my tutor in high school.” Trevor grinned widely as your cheeks flushed, “Maybe I should get your number in case something else happens to Louie.”
You grinned as you pulled out a business card from your scrub pocket, “Feel free to call me with any questions you may have.” You ran a hand through Louie’s fur, “I feel bad running out but I have twenty minutes for my lunch and I have to go all the way back to my place because I was in a rush this morning. It was great seeing you again Jamie, nice meeting you Trevor.” You hurried out of the exam room and had your vet tech go in and help them get the paperwork done.
You and Trevor quickly began dating after that. Your relationship was perfect, Trevor was kind, funny and attentive to you at all times. But you couldn’t help but find yourself wondering if you and Trevor were really meant to be. Trevor was a stereotypical attractive athlete who had women throwing themselves at him. You were a plus sized woman who had no interest in the spotlight. So when rumors of Trevor dating a effortlessly beautiful and thin social media influencer, it was no surprise you let it get the best of you.
Trevor had reassured you that he was not involved with the influencer, you didn’t believe him but that was expected when a photo of them standing next to each other in an amusement park. But that wasn’t even the worst of it, you’d had by far the worst day at work, you had to euthanize 3 dogs and 2 cats. All you wanted to do when you arrived to your shared apartment with Trevor was take a scorching shower and lay in bed. You opened the door to the apartment yawning as you slipped off your shoes and entered the living room. You dropped your tote bag on the coffee table as you made your way to the bathroom to start the shower.
You had started the water and made your way to the bedroom to grab clothes. You felt your throat tighten and your stomach churn as you pushed the door open. A small squeak came from beside the bed. You blinked rapidly as your eyes met a pair of bright brown doe eyes. You felt your voice come out as a whisper, “I can’t believe him.” You slammed your dresser drawer shut as you walked into the bathroom and shut off the water and made your way into the living room. Trevor was leaning against the counter sipping water as his sweatpants hung lowly on his hips, “Hi hon, I didn’t realize you were home yet.”
You bit your tongue, “I’m sure you didn’t. How was your day? Do anything fun?” Trevor felt a sense of panic in his chest, “Nope, just practice and grabbed drinks with the guys. How was work?” You picked up your tote bag and slipped on your shoes, “I’m out of here, I can’t do this anymore. I trusted you and you lied to me. You said there was nothing going on with her. I can’t do this Trev, I won’t.” Trevor felt his heart stop, “Baby, you can’t just give up on this. Please? Jamie said that I would be able to fix this, please.” You shook your head, “I don’t have to. You already did.” You walked out of the apartment and slammed the door behind you.
You found yourself at your clinic, you didn’t have anywhere to go. You hadn’t really connected with any of the girlfriends of Trevor’s teammates. You knew Jamie would side with Trevor because they’d been friends for years especially when Trevor said Jamie had encouraged him. And your hectic work hours didn’t allow you to make friends easily. So you went to the one place that was truly yours, your work. You sat on the floor in your office staring at the wall.
Your phone was blowing up with texts from Trevor. You ignored them until the last one, ‘I’m sorry for this. I asked them not to post it.’ You furrowed an eyebrow as a new notification from Entertainment Weekly on Twitter. You clicked the notification and were met with an article saying that Trevor and Dixie Damelio confirmed their relationship. You felt bile form in your stomach as you locked your phone.
Six months had passed since then and you still found yourself staring intently at yourself whenever you walked past a mirror. You always found something wrong in the reflection, whether the shirt you wore was too tight on your breasts, the pants you wore were too tight on your legs, your thighs were too large, your arms jiggled as you walked, no matter what you found yourself picking yourself apart. Granted you did it occasionally while you were with Trevor and before you two started dating. But it was different after being cheated on.
Before you didn’t pay mind to the harsh comments people made as you walked past them on the street, or from behind you in a restaurant line. But now you found yourself shrinking smaller whenever a negative comment was made. That’s what led you to your current predicament. You were sitting on the floor of your new apartment’s bedroom. A full body length mirror in front of you. Your cheeks were stained with tears as you reached for your cell phone.
You knew you shouldn’t do it, he was happy, he’d moved on. You found yourself checking his girlfriends instagram account and overanalyzing your body compared to hers. You clicked his contact and let it ring. You took in a deep breath as his raspy voice filled your ears, “Y/N what’s up?” You sniffled as you realized that you had probably woken him, it was 3 in the morning. You shook your head, “Nothing, I shouldn’t have called. Forget it.”
Trevor’s voice filled your ears, “I can tell your crying. It’s not nothing if your crying. What’s wrong?” You sniffled, “I guess I was just trying to figure out what I did wrong. I mean why wasn’t I enough Trev?” Trevor felt his heart split wide open, “Baby you were enough. It was me who wasn’t.” You shook your head, “Don’t give me that bullshit Trev, what can I fix for the next person? I mean is it my body, I can change that. I just don’t want to ever feel like this again.” If Trevor thought his heart couldn’t break any further, your words made a fool of him.
“No, you were perfect. I was too immature for someone like you. Your the most perfect person I know, I wasn’t ready for someone to expect that of me. Especially you. I should have communicated with you but I was drunk and Jamie was encouraging me to flirt with Dixie, I was lonely, we’d been fighting and I shouldn’t have done it. It’s not you.” You shook your head as you sniffled, “I really loved you. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. I just I have to move on from that.” With that you hung up the phone.

Hello, I was wondering is there any good and free resources on basic veterinary knowledge. I'm currently working as a receptionist as my first job, I don't have any previous animal husbandry knowledge or handling experience; Pretty sure I was hired bc my English proficiency and somewhat okay with computer
Oftentimes I receive call about some basic inquiry (like can my dog get vaccinated when she is in heat) and have to response back to client about it. While I read animal welfare articles and consult colleague on how to answer, I still feel extremely anxious about not knowing enough. A lot of information that goes deeper are paid-wall and some are just not something a receptionist are required to answer, but I would still like to know more if not to ease anxiety. Despite my anxiety I really like the job and just don't want to loss it, plus I want to be more helpful/useful
Sorry for getting personal in the lateral part. Have a nice day!
vet-and-wild here.
Honestly, you'll probably learn with time and experience. It's also helpful for clinics to have SOPs/scripted answers for common questions.
A specific source might be a bit tricky, just because a lot of the ones I can think of are gonna be way more in depth than you'd need. But you could try reading articles written by the various veterinary specialties (i.e. veterinary nutritionists, cardiologists, etc). A lot of them have info or position statements on their websites. The AVMA (or equivalent organization for other countries) has free articles for owners and vets, and sometimes VIN has some open access ones. VCA also has some really nice owner handouts that are available for free (I usually just Google "VCA cat (disease) handout" or whatever I'm looking for) if I want to find one to print. The International Cat Care Council has a lot of nice articles about cat behavior and health too. Sometimes the various universities with vet hospitals have stuff available online. Cornell usually has a lot. Clinician's Brief is helpful but usually requires a subscription. But if you really want to read stuff behind a paywall you could also ask your boss if they'd be willing to pay the subscription.

So Amba has suddenly gone downhill with the Lyme again. She was doing fine until the cold freeze, but then rapidly started spooking and being hypersensitive to brushing again. I decided to drop the current vet like a hot potato. I sent her this vid and she said, "She looks a little anxious but it's not uncommon for Arabs to do this when they have ulcers." Like screw off with that breed stereotyping please. I already told her that she's not spooky or reactive unless she has Lyme, and that she's had bad ulcers in the past to the point of dropping over 100 lbs and even then she remained calm and didn't act like this. In this video I just put her in the ring for a minute while I picked up manure. I didn't even leave her sight.
Also, I told her I wanted Amba vaccinated for Lyme after the oxytetracycline and she said no because its for dogs not horses and sometimes doesn't work. I know it sometimes doesn't work but that can be checked by retesting for the OSFA antibodies. Additionally, most people in the "Horses with Lyme Disease" fb group said the vaccine was a game changer for them IF the Cornell protocol was followed (3 initial vaccines followed by boosters in fall and spring). I brought this up and she said, "Well it may be a colic risk so I won't do it." I asked her if she had any personal experience with horses colicing after it or could send me any studies suggesting there are adverse side effects, and she sent nothing.
I have a lot of respect for vets in general. I know it's a very difficult profession. But I'm really tired of the ones around here dismissing nuero symptoms.

On reading those articles about the fraudulent food researcher Brian Wansink, this screamed out to me: "“For about the past 20 years,” he wrote, “my morning mediation [sic] begins with ‘Help me make millions of people healthier, happier, and closer to God.’" (https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/stephaniemlee/brian-wansink-cornell-smarter-lunchrooms-flawed-data)
Closer to God.
From what I could find in a quick search, he seems to be a Methodist. His brother got a religious studies degree from Virginia Wesleyan, which while a secular school, is also historically linked to the Methodist Church. I cannot say for sure from this info, however. It's pretty clear that he's some form of Christian, though.
One of Wansink's popular studies (which I found from looking up "Brian Wansink religion") claims that WWII vets were more religious the more intense the combat they faced was, and that also more religious vets opposed war more. The religious propaganda here is clear, especially now that we know Wansink was a pious fraud.
That he was a pious fraud for the reason of wanting to get people to eat "healthier" (more vegetables and less food overall appears to be his definition of that), and that he linked this with religion, is not surprising. I keep running into cults of all kinds intertwining religion with disordered eating in the name of weight loss being somehow godly. Controlling food is an even better way to dominate people than controlling sex.

So my 19 year old cat that I love so much and have had nearly half my life (I wasn't yet 22 when I got her and I'm nearing 41 now) has cost me about $1200 this year in vet bills alone. And probably more when the vet at Cornell University Hospital for Animals (an hour away from me, but the VMC that was closer was full) gets the T4 results back. But I love her so much. And I could have lost her today if she'd had any complications due to having to be sedated for xrays. But she's a fighter (I even had to warn the vet and the techs that she's a spitfire) The doctor said she has a heart gallop and a small murmur, and that she might have hyperthyroidism, which could have given her the heart problems. We're hoping it's benign so I can get her on medication to see if that'll reverse the heart problems. We'll see. I know 19 is so old to be having to be put on medication but I did ask the vet if she thought it would be worth it. Also I'm so glad Care Credit is a thing in NY. And I might have to request the limit be upped if I have to get more tests done for her (especially an echo for her heart, and an ultrasound, and other bloodwork) I would not have been able to pay all this off out of pocket...
Tumblr media
She elected to sleep in the back seat on the way home (forgive the mess, we're in the process of moving for the next week and a half)
The vet (and other pet parents I talked to) were amazed she did so well on harness. Considering she's technically just very tolerant of it. But she was also rather lethargic when I first brought her, and she started getting more alert about 6 hours after we got to the waiting room (despite everything, we were there about 11 hours and the students and staff and vets were so apologetic about it ;v; )

H I S T O R Y ( trigger warnings for infidelity & illness )
isobel was born in hammersmith, london on the the 17 of september 1979. the youngest of the two howard siblings by seven years, she was an unexpected ( but happily recieved ) surprise. the child of a successful concert cellist father and accountant mother, she grew up comfortable and wanting for nothing.
school was a breeze for academically-minded isobel, and when it came time to make a decision about tertiary education, she was ambitious. she applied to all the top universities in the UK, and to the shock of her family, even a few US ivy leagues. due to her excellent grades, she had her pick of the litter when it came to acceptance time. and she chose cornell in new york.
life in america was challenging at first, especially as a lone international student. isobel kept herself busy with her degree in animal science, and eventually as she made more connections, she began to feel at home. her course was thrilling, and only solidified her desire to become a vet and one day own her own practice. working with large animals, specifically, felt like her calling. horses were her favourite patients, reminding her of the joyous times spent riding on her grandparent's farm as a girl.
isobel was studying in the library in her third year at cornell when she was approached by a man who introduced himself as mark howard. he was a few years her senior, engaged in postgraduate studies, and devastatingly handsome. the two began talking, and soon enough they were an exclusive item. isobel had dated people before but never seriously, never long enough to fall in love. with mark, she did; and it was effortless. isobel completed her honours year with flying colours, and she and mark moved into a small apartment near campus together. she began working as a veterinary technician at a local clinic. and then she fell pregnant.
liam howard came into the world bloodied, his screams a soundtrack for his mother's joyous tears and father's beaming smile. isobel put her plans for veterinary college on hold to raise liam, and mark took more shifts to support the family. for the first few years of liam's life they were a strong unit, their home filled with laughter. the couple moved to a nice two bedroom home in colorado, with a backyard large enough for a dog they named buck. but when isobel went back to work and started studying again, things began to change. isobel and mark found less and less time for each other, and a kernel of resentment grew between them for careers they had to stop and start.
liam was eight when isobel discovered mark had an affair. it was a one time thing, he told her, born of loneliness and frustration, but isobel could not get past it. she been lonely and frustrated too, and still she had not betrayed him. they divorced shortly after, agreeing to a split custody agreement for liam's benefit.
eventually, isobel did get that veterinary practice she dreamed of, and slowly her life got back on track. she began dating again, too, exploring her sexuality in a way she never dared to as a younger woman. for all his faults, mark barely bat an eye when she asked him to look after liam one friday night so she could go on a date with a woman. none of the relationships worked out for her, though not for lack of trying. she didn't lose sleep over it. she thought she had time to figure it out.
an infectious outbreak — that's what the media called it anyway, before internet shut down. military trucks rolled into town and began herding people out of their homes shortly after, but before they could reach her, isobel had driven to her ex-husband's. it was his week with liam, and there was no way in hell she'd let herself get rounded up without her child by her side.
surviving the end of the world proved tough, but even more difficult was surviving it alongside her ex-husband. the early years very nearly drove her insane, stuck in a military quarantine zone in the same house. every little thing she used to love about mark drove her insane. however as time went on, they established a truce. liam was now a gangly preteen, and presenting as a united front made parenting insurmountably easier. a unorthodox family of three, they stayed in the safety of the quarantine zone. if not for the bodies of the dead visible from the high boundary walls, they could almost imagine they were living an ordinary life.
they were eight years into the end of the world when the sickness began to spread. her veterinary skills put to work at the camp's medical station, isobel was one of the first to fall ill. it started with a sore throat and headache, and before she knew it, isobel found herself in a makeshift hospital bed, slipping in and out of consciousness. moments of waking were spent in panic, looking for the face of her son. but she was isolated, set aside with the rest of the sick. she began to rot away there, until one day when she awoke she was being carried through the ruins of the quarantine zone. the military had been overrun. her home was gone.
after what she later discovered were days, isobel came to in the university of eastern colorado's hospital. her rescuer had dragged her all the way to the nearest sign of civilisation. hooked up to an IV, the camp's medical staff rehydrated her devastated body and provided her with the care her previous home had not. it took her a week to gather the strength to walk the length of the halls, and not a day longer to convince the staff to let her outside. there was no sign of her son or ex-husband amongst the uec crowd, but still isobel refused to let herself think the worst. if she was able to make it out alive, barely breathing and unable to walk, then liam and mark surely could too.
it took isobel some time to accept the uec as her new home. being without her family, as strangely joined as they may have been, felt unnatural and foreign. the people around her were kind, if not wary, but it was in the paddocks of their farm where she first began to feel at ease. interested in proving herself ( and in turn earning some "excursion" passes outside community walls ), isobel became camp veterinarian. she spent her days on the farm, wandering between animals and mucking out stalls with the farm hands. her nights were occupied by the comms tour, where she sat with camp operators, praying to hear a call from her family on the station they'd always communicated on in the past. any hopes of venturing outside the uec with scavengers and scouts was dashed though when the coalition attacked a year into her stay. broken and frightened, the community closed their gates for good, and isobel finally felt herself losing hope in ever seeing her family again.
these days, there's a sense of defeat to isobel that wasn't present before. though she keeps herself busy with work and finds comfort in the friends she has made over the past two years, her every moment is punctuated by the fact that her son is not with her. desperate to join scouting missions and search for him herself, isobel has began to trade in evenings at the comms tower for those spent in the camp's training yard. after ten years spent protected behind walls, far from the infected, isobel is now more motivated than ever to get out from beyond them. she won't find her family by hiding.

When ET calls, can we be sure we're not being spoofed?
New SETI technique filters out Earth interference to focus on extraterrestrial signals only
Scientists have devised a new technique for finding and vetting possible radio signals from other civilizations in our galaxy — a major advance in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) that will significantly boost confidence in any future detection of alien life.
Most of today's SETI searches are conducted by Earth-based radio telescopes, which means that any ground or satellite radio interference — ranging from Starlink satellites to cellphones, microwaves and even car engines — can produce a radio blip that mimics a technosignature of a civilization outside our solar system. Such false alarms have raised and then dashed hopes since the first dedicated SETI program began in 1960.
Currently, researchers vet these signals by pointing the telescope in a different place in the sky, then return a few times to the spot where the signal was originally detected to confirm it wasn't a one-off. Even then, the signal could be something weird produced on Earth.
The new technique, developed by researchers at the Breakthrough Listen project at the University of California, Berkeley, checks for evidence that the signal has actually passed through interstellar space, eliminating the possibility that the signal is mere radio interference from Earth.
Breakthrough Listen, the most comprehensive SETI search anywhere, monitors the northern and southern skies with radio telescopes in search of technosignatures. It also targets thousands of individual stars in the plane of the Milky Way galaxy, which is the likely direction a civilization would beam a signal, with a particular focus on the center of the galaxy.
"I think it's one of the biggest advances in radio SETI in a long time," said Andrew Siemion, principal investigator for Breakthrough Listen and director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center (BSRC), which operates the world's longest running SETI program. "It's the first time where we have a technique that, if we just have one signal, potentially could allow us to intrinsically differentiate it from radio frequency interference. That's pretty amazing, because if you consider something like the Wow! signal, these are often a one-off."
Siemion was referring to a famed 72-second narrowband signal observed in 1977 by a radio telescope in Ohio. The astronomer who discovered the signal, which looked like nothing produced by normal astrophysical processes, wrote "Wow!" in red ink on the data printout. The signal has not been observed since.
"The first ET detection may very well be a one-off, where we only see one signal," Siemion said. "And if a signal doesn't repeat, there's not a lot that we can say about that. And obviously, the most likely explanation for it is radio frequency interference, as is the most likely explanation for the Wow! signal. Having this new technique and the instrumentation capable of recording data at sufficient fidelity such that you could see the effect of the interstellar medium, or ISM, is incredibly powerful."
The technique is described in a paper appearing today in The Astrophysical Journal by UC Berkeley graduate student Bryan Brzycki; Siemion; Brzycki's thesis adviser Imke de Pater, UC Berkeley professor emeritus of astronomy; and colleagues at Cornell University and the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.
Siemion noted that, in the future, Breakthrough Listen will be employing the so-called scintillation technique, along with sky location, during its SETI observations, including with the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia — the world’s largest steerable radio telescope — and the MeerKAT array in South Africa.
Distinguishing a signal from ET
For more than 60 years, SETI researchers have scanned the skies in search of signals that look different from the typical radio emissions of stars and cataclysmic events, such as supernovas. One key distinction is that natural cosmic sources of radio waves produce a broad range of wavelengths — that is, broadband radio waves — whereas technical civilizations, like our own, produce narrowband radio signals. Think radio static versus a tuned-in FM station.
Because of the huge background of narrowband radio bursts from human activity on Earth, finding a signal from outer space is like looking for a needle in a haystack. So far, no narrowband radio signals from outside our solar system have been confirmed, though Breakthrough Listen found one interesting candidate — dubbed BLC1 — in 2020. Later analysis determined that it was almost certainly due to radio interference, Siemion said.
Siemion and his colleagues realized, however, that real signals from extraterrestrial civilizations should exhibit features caused by passage through the ISM that could help discriminate between Earth- and space-based radio signals. Thanks to past research describing how the cold plasma in the interstellar medium, primarily free electrons, affect signals from radio sources such as pulsars, astronomers now have a good idea how the ISM affects narrowband radio signals. Such signals tend to rise and fall in amplitude over time — that is, they scintillate. This is because the signals are slightly refracted, or bent, by the intervening cold plasma, so that when the radio waves eventually reach Earth by different paths, the waves interfere, both positively and negatively.
Our atmosphere produces a similar scintillation, or twinkle, that affects the pinprick of optical light from a star. Planets, which are not point sources of light, do not twinkle.
Brzycki developed a computer algorithm, available as a Python script, that analyzes the scintillation of narrowband signals and plucks out those that dim and brighten over periods of less than a minute, indicating they've passed through the ISM.
"This implies that we could use a suitably tuned pipeline to unambiguously identify artificial emission from distant sources vis-a-vis terrestrial interference," de Pater said. "Further, even if we didn’t use this technique to find a signal, this technique could, in certain cases, confirm a signal originating from a distant source, rather than locally. This work represents the first new method of signal confirmation beyond the spatial reobservation filter in the history of radio SETI."
Brzycki is now conducting radio observations at the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia to show that the technique can quickly weed out Earth-based radio signals and perhaps even detect scintillation in a narrowband signal — a technosignature candidate.
"Maybe we can identify this effect within individual observations and see that attenuation and brightening and actually say that the signal is undergoing that effect," he said. "It's another tool that we have available now."
The technique will be useful only for signals that originate more than about 10,000 light years from Earth, since a signal must travel through enough of the ISM to exhibit detectable scintillation. Anything originating nearby — the BLC-1 signal, for example, seemed to be coming from our nearest star, Proxima Centauri — would not exhibit this effect.
Other co-authors of the paper are James Cordes of Cornell, Brian Lacki of BSRC and Vishal Gajjar and Sofia Sheikh of both BSRC and the SETI Institute. Breakthrough Listen is managed by the Breakthrough Initiatives, a program sponsored by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation.

Looking for a fic I read on ao3 awhile back yelena x kate bishop they're in college and it's a slow fall into a very obvious relationship and kate is patient and taking things slow and yelena is like wait are we dating and they have a fight and Kate's like you would've run away so we moved at your excruciating slow speed and I'm fine with it cause I like you so much and then yelena gets into Cornell vet school? This might be two separate fics someone help me sort this out please
I do know it's not -down on my knees- which I will recommend to all because it's amazing but besides that I'm coming up empty

A town called Prose is home to || Cailan Williams || who is a || thirty one || year old, || cis man ||. They work as || veterinarian ||  and live in || Drew Drive||. in Prose, they’re known as the || Sean Teale || lookalike. || he/him || They were confused and startled by the recent news.

tw death, tw accident
Cailan known as Cal was born and raised in Florida. Having a love for the beach, the sun and spending so much of his life outdoors. Growing up, he was always a confident and outgoing young man. He knew what he wanted out of life. He was talkative, adventurous, and could never sit still for long. He has a good sense of humour and enjoys making others laugh. From a young age, he was always climbing things, playing baseball and other sports, teaching himself instruments and building things with his own hands. He liked to be on the go, and he liked to be busy and that has never really changed into his adult life.
As a child like many others at that age, Cailan thought he was invincible. Throughout elementary school, he liked to push boundaries and he was often getting himself in trouble, even when he didn't mean to. Though overall, he was a kindhearted and empathetic child despite his playful and reckless ways. He had plenty of friends and showed he was a loyal and good young person. Cailan is also very smart and excelled when it came to his school work, with a real strength for maths and science. His parents knew he needed to be kept busy during his childhood and gave him plenty of opportunities, whether that be sports, drama club and even going on hiking trails.
His parents loved him, despite the many times they were called into school for him pulling a prank or telling a teacher they had the wrong answer. He was close to his dad, and enjoyed working on cars with him and playing sports together. He also learned to cook with his mom and grandmother.
Though his life took a turn for the worst at just fifteen years old when a tragic accident happened. Cailan and his friend went climbing without safety gear and got into some trouble at the top of the cliff. When the rock crumbled, the boys fell. Cailan managed to hold on, but his best friend fell and all Cailan could do was watch. That memory has stayed with him into his adult life and Cailan still feels guilty, blaming himself for what happened.
For a while, Cailan let his rebellious side take over, messing about and getting himself into trouble throughout high school. The loss of his best friend had hit him hard and the young man acting out. Though in his last year of high school, finding a hurt dog out on a run knocked some sense into him and ended up showing Cailan where he wanted his life to be. He took the dog home, made sure he got medical help and looked after him. Eventually adopting the dog as his own. He knew from that moment, he wanted to be a vet, he had always loved science and had empathy for those around him. And he began working hard in school again and securing a place at Cornell University for veterinary science when he was eighteen.
Throughout the rest of high school he became closer to his family and they managed to keep him on track. He made a new group of friends and had a teenage girlfriend. He was a regular teen, despite the moments alone where the loss of his friend still hurt him more than he would ever admit to anyone. He enjoyed moving away for college. He liked the independence and meeting new people. Despite the partying and the messing about, he excelled and put everything into his studies.
Cailan works hard and he gives life his all. He's a jokester and friendly to everyone he meets though he's never really let anyone too close. He’s afraid of losing people, afraid of them seeing his vulnerabilities. The job in Prose was not one he was looking for, but everything seemed to fall into place. When the small town in New Hampshire was looking for a replacement for the retiring old owner, it felt like the perfect opportunity and it soon felt like home. He liked the small community and he enjoyed people's animals who he saw regularly.
He is now thirty one and a pretty good veterinary doctor. He has worked in the small town hospital for a couple of years now. He’s in a settled place and is genuinely happy with where his life is at. He knows he is an attractive man, he likes to flirt, he likes to make people laugh but he keeps himself out of trouble most of the time. He enjoys going out on his bike, he goes camping with his friends quite often and he likes to keep fit. He still likes to be on the go, always running, boxing and messing around with a football. Though he has his quiet moments just watching a sad movie when no one is around. He’s a dog lover and it is something that keeps him company after his long working days. He’s a friendly, happy guy, that despite everything, tries to see the best in the world.

[ demet ozdemir, female, she/her ] - was that AYLIN YILMAZ i saw by the lighthouse today? i heard that the THIRTY ONE year old who has been in nightrest for ON AND OFF HER ENTIRE LIFE and works  as an OWNER OF TWO DOGS VETERINARY has a reputation of being COMPASSIONATE, but also BLUNT. they reside in LOW POINT & people in town usually associate them with THE SMELL OF FRESH CUT LILACS,  LONG WAVY CHOCOLATE BROWN HAIR AND ALMOST ALWAYS AROUND ANIMALS  . let’s hope the killer doesn’t go after them next
𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐂𝐒 …
𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄:  aylin yilmaz                   𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄(𝐒):  ali ( friends and family only )                   𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄(𝐒):  aylin                   𝐁𝐈𝐑𝐓𝐇 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄:  april 16th, 1992                   𝐀𝐆𝐄:  31 years old                   𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑:  female                   𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐒:  she/her                   𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐂 𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍:  heteromantic                   𝐒𝐄𝐗𝐔𝐀𝐋 𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍:  heterosexual                   𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐍:  none
𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐘…
born april 16, 1992, aylins life from the time she was born was never going to be a normal one. with her dad in the army, it was to be assumed that she would never be in one place for long. at the time of her birth, her father had been deployed, with him not returning home until she was one year old.  by the time he did come home, the family had gotten orders to relocate to fort bragg. following the orders, the family moved down to fort bragg. for the first few years of her life, the family lived there. though when aylins mother got the call that her great grandmother had fallen ill, aylin, her mother and siblings moved back to nightrest while her father stayed at fort bragg.
on the weekends, her father did visit. growing up, she had come used to that. to her father not being around as much.  a year after moving back to nightrest, her great grandmother had passed away.  though she was young at the time, she knew how much her great grandmother had missed her great grandfather who had passed away a few years earlier. to her, it was clear she had passed on due to a broken heart. but she didn't voice that she believed that. instead, she let the adults believe what ever they had said. after her death, aylins mother kept them in nightrest. it was a talk her mother had with her father. and keeping them there was the best decision over all. it meant not moving as often. though despite that, aylin made sure to split her time between fort bragg and nightrest.
during the holidays, and summer vacation, she would spend it with her father on base. as she would spend her time there during breaks and the summer, she did end up making friends there too. it was during this time that aylin took a liking to animals. and helping them too. the summer before her senior year of high school. she found a stray puppy that she eventually took in. naming her kiara, she helped nurse her new puppy back to help with the guidance of the local vet near fort bragg.  returning home towards the end of summer, her mother was surprised with the fact that she had a dog. but in no time came to love her just as much.
following graduation, and spending the summer there, she packed her bags and headed off to cornell university in new york. for four years, she studied there before applying to the veterinary school of medicine there. getting accepted, she spent four more years there. during her years it veterinarian school. aside from going for surgery, she took up two specialties which was a rare thing. aquatic animal medicine and feline medicine. the summer before her final year, she spent it in Northern Tanzania at the Serengeti National Park there. it was there that she helped nurse back to health a lioness and her cubs. in the process, forming a bond with the mother lioness.  to say it hurt when she had to leave was an understatement. returning to new york, she finished her final year of school before graduating.
returning home, she moved back in with her mom before getting a job at the veterinarian clinic. it was also around this time that she learned her dad had changed to the massachusetts national guard. which meant he would be home more often.  two years after getting her job, the keys to the place were given to her, followed by the ownership of it. which surprised her. owning the place was a shock. never did she think she would become the owner of the place. but she had. and she would take it with pride.
flash forward to now,  from time to time, she does tend to go travel. mainly to africa to the same wildlife conservation she went to years ago. though now with the recent killings, leaving home has been put on hold. how could she even leave her family when all hell was starting to break loose?
OTHER FACTS…
     - she tends to like animals more mainly because a.) they don't talk back and b.) they don't start any drama with anyone.
-she's been in a few relationships over the years. one of them ended pretty bad while the others ended on a good note.
- after a few months of living with her parents, she eventually ended up getting her own place in low point. she has considered moving though but is picky on what kind of house she wants.
WANTED CONNECTIONS…
her person: a childhood friend of hers, this person knows her in and out. they’re also joined by the hip as well. and when all hell breaks loose, these two are always by each others side to help the other get through it. ( can be male or female)
childhood friends: a group of friends she’s known since she was a kid. ones who will almost always get together once a week.
- first love/high school sweet heart: this was her first everything and the only guy she really ever loved. they broke up  whether they stayed in touch afterwards is up to the person who takes this up. and whether they're still close as well. they could still have feelings for each other too.

Had the phone call with the vet, who said that she's actually not 100% sure it is a bone cyst because bone cysts usually appear as dark circles, while he has more of a dark shadow over a more general area. But she thinks a bone cyst is likely, though she's also not sure if it's interacting with his joint and causing his lameness, or if it's the arthritis. Whatever. There are clearly things that need further diagnosing, and she offered to do more nerve blocking and radiographs, but I just want him to have a full nuclear scintigraphy at this point. I also really stressed to her that I want him to have the absorbable implant surgery, and since a cyst is still likely I asked her to find out who in the area might be able to do it. She said she's never heard of any surgeon in the area doing it, but she will reach out to Cornell and the University of PA today to explain what she sees on his radiographs and see if they are willing to try the procedure. If one of them is, then I will send him there and do a nuclear scintigraphy beforehand and possibly a MRI on just the area of the bone cyst, so they will hopefully be able to come up with clearer diagnosis and start treating his other potential problems all in one go.
If these places don't want to do the surgery, then the plan is to give him injections for arthritis and see if that stops the lameness.
Then if that doesn't stop the lameness I don't know. The other surgeries have less than a 50% success rate (and by success rate I mean resulting in pasture soundness, not even riding soundness) on adult horses that already have arthritis, and involve longer periods of stall rest, which I know will drive him mad. It might not be fair to him to keep drawing things out if the likelihood is that he won't even stay pasture sound for more than a week or two at a time.
