a (not) little rant about total drama’s portrayal of dissociative identity disorder in ROTI and AS
a few little tidbits before we get into the juice…
-i don’t have DID ! i have a dissociation disorder and i’ve done a lot of research on DID, but that obviously doesn’t mean i know as much as someone in a system would. if i make any mistakes or you want to add/correct anything, please do !
-since there isn’t an official name for the system as a whole, i’m gonna use “mike system” to refer to mike, chester, svetlana, vito, manitoba, and mal as a system
-before anyone says it, i know it’s “just a kids’ show” but it’s a kids’ show i’m insane and not normal about. so i’m very passionate about this. also kids’ shows should still be normal about mental illnesses/disabilities so idc
alright stinkers… let’s get into it
ok ! mike systems DID in ROTI isn’t GOOD representation but it isn’t like. the worst out there compared to some other media. some huge positives are the way the alters have actual triggers, and that everyone in the system IS portrayed as their own person, not just an extension or part of mike. i interpret the “gasp” the body does with switches as a stand in for dissociation (since they couldn’t really have him just sit there and stare into space bc of plot/time reasons) and it’s very easy to assume the role of everyone in the system from their personalities and triggers. the best example of this to me is vito ! vito is a “tough guy” who’s triggered to front by his shirt coming off, it’s easy to put the pieces together and assume his role is a protector who formed due to sexual abuse.
obviously, the use of the outdated term multiple personality disorder, the very quick switches, the fact the writers obviously did not actually research DID and just wanted a silly crazy character, and probably more i’m forgetting rn, are NOT issues to just ignore because of the good stuff. it’s definitely NOT good or super accurate representation by any means, but i don’t think it’s exactly super bad either. it’s iffy but has redeeming qualities to it.
another plus about mike system in ROTI, even though this isn’t really part of the portrayal of DID as a disorder, is that mike has a love interest that isn’t written as a joke. i feel like having mike in a romantic relationship is a BIG positive representation wise. it’s really important to me that even though zoey is confused and weirded out when she didn’t know what was going on, once she found out mike was part of a system she became more understanding and didn’t give up on him. being part of a system doesn’t mean you can’t have a partner, friends, etc and mike being in a wholesome healthy relationship is a nice breath of fresh air compared to other media portraying DID.
NOW. LETS ADDRESS MAL AND ALL STARS. GOOD LORD.
all stars has an issue with watering down characters and making poor plot/character choices in general, and in my opinion it’s the worst with mike system. ROTI had questionable at times but ok DID rep with mike system, which is why it’s so disappointing that AS took the “evil alter” route and whatever the hell the button thing was… bc they were SO close with having ok representation and then they threw it all away for an overdone and harmful stereotype. mike system in ROTI is a MASTERPIECE compared to whatever the hell was going on in AS.
even when you take into account that in a real life system, mal is most similar to the role of a persecutor (an alter who sabotages the body’s relationships and causes harm to the body/other alters as a way to “protect” everyone in their eyes (oops ! i was wrong. a persecutor isn’t always a protector, however they can take the role of a persecutor and protector which is where i got confused. mal is a both a persecutor and protector to me)) which makes SOME of his actions explainable TO AN EXTENT, it’s clear the writers didn’t have that intent and just wanted a spooky evil alter, which is really disappointing. along with the button issue, which is just…. so insane….
i choose to believe for my own sanity that the button was sort of an emergency temporary dormancy button and that chester fr just lied/didn’t know and made something up. but that obviously isn’t canon, and IN CANON the body’s trauma and serious disorder was literally gone because of the PRESS OF A BUTTON and it is absolutely ridiculous. and it’s portrayed as a GOOD THING.
systems are systems because it is the only way the body and brain can maintain stability and live after serious repeated trauma. in a real situation with a system, if there was somehow a way to get rid of alters in literal seconds, the consequences would be ABSOLUTELY DISASTROUS and unstable. obviously, integration and dormancy CAN be a good thing depending on the system, but it is a LOOONG and complicated process and watering it down to the press of a button in your brain is so inappropriate and insensitive. literally why did they do that. it’s just so disappointing to go from what mike system was in roti to what they became in all stars.
sorry u guys i am just passionate about this

Theory on World Dynamic & Blot Pt. 1 (No Beta, apologies in advance for any and all confusion you may have when reading this. Please delete this is you don't feel comfortable with this):
One of the things I didn't get at first was why the Seven were considered role-models in TWST---I couldn't pinpoint how society would openly idolize people for actions that are openly admitted as wrong in a unanimous sense yet not have someone openly question/challenge this. The Seven are historical figures. Some of the dialogue we do get hints at imperfection that are more close to D!Villains the audience is more familiar with. Assuming Earth is meant to be referring to our Earth (in which it is taken in it's entirety without altercations), I think TWST is meant to have similar core parts that reflect our real-world. History-context-wise, it would make more sense that royal/governing figures(Queen of Hearts, Scar, & Jafar) would be recorded---even considered an example to TWST's present day royalty/governing system on do's and don'ts---and respected as seen by the description on the statues (being able to govern over (what I will assume is) a massive population and having the nation surviving---even thriving---are (objectively) ideal feats to be remembered by and put as positive example in the grand scheme of things). If this is true, then it would also make sense for the Seven to coexist with their respective protagonist(s), making RSA possible but also making the dynamic not as black-and-white as simplification will allow. . .Yana didn't need to write an explanation w/worldbuilding cuz she played it smart and just used what she already had---existing reference called real life.
(Note: I know that this ask opens with “part 1”, but I never received any part 2s or other follow-ups after that DX)
Tumblr media
I think I get what you’re trying to communicate? (Correct me if I’m wrong!) So I believe this Anon is saying that 1) both the Disney villains and heroes exist in Twisted Wonderland as historical figures, 2) the alternate tellings of their histories can coexist, and 3) like in real life, history can be twisted depending on the narrative/teller and, in hindsight, actions that are considered dubious can be viewed by future generations as morally correct or righteous. (If that’s the case, I expressed similar thoughts in this post.)
There instances in which the original stories they come from diverge or coexist with other versions which are also treated as true. For example, Kalim tells a tale about a princess (Jasmine) who happily married a thief (Aladdin), transcending the social norms of their time. There is also another tale that the Sorcerer of the Sands (Jafar) revealed that someone (Aladdin) had deceived a princess (Jasmine) about their social status, and that he saved the kingdom by revealing the lie. Somehow, the original story became multiple stories, all of which stand on their own.
We must recall that there are often positive spins put on the tales we know of to be the truth; suddenly Jafar is no longer plotting to overthrow the Sultan, but is a loyal advisor who dutifully served his country, Ursula’s deals are justified because the fault lied with her clients for not paying up, etc. This is also true of real life, where, depending on the person you ask or the history textbook you reference, certain events and details may be glossed over or even completely rewritten. This may be due to censorship or a deliberate attempt to control the narrative and what information is taught to and carried over to students (and into the future). Lilia even makes a passing comment about this in episode 7, saying that history can be “changed” over time.
This is likely how and why the Great Seven are worshipped as they are; history has been “twisted” from the (presumably what Yuu views in their dreams), which just goes to show that good is closer to evil (and vice versa) than expected, thus blurring the lines between the two and creating a grey area. This is very much in line with TWST’s philosophy—that there is more to something than meets the eye, and that being truly “evil” or truly “good” doesn’t exist.

HI! i know this is really random, but i really wanted to share this with someone who likes madoka magica and get their opinion on it! (also, youve seen more then i have, so i dont know how well it fits...)
i think the song Dynamism by Muship REALLY REALLY REALLY fits madoka magica. i cant really put it into words, it just screams madoka magica, and none of my friends can truly understand how much it does!! this song has literally made me cry just thinking about homura and madoka and the entire plot its so complex just like the show, gives off a magical yet dark scratchy vibe, has the sort of weirdness that the witches give off...i seriously cant describe how much it has affected me and my view on madoka magica.
i would LOVE to get your opinion on it!! let me know your thoughts and how you like it!!!♡♡
Oh dear…to be honest, I’m not sure if I’m the best person to answer this, and and I’m not sure if I am correct with this…but I will help! Ahhh but, I’m not sure if I am correct with this, there’s a high possibility I am wrong or I misunderstood certain parts.
Okay, first of all, I absolutely LOVE the song! It’s so beautiful, and I love how the beginning starts off calm and mellow until it suddenly becomes rough and scratchy. This does fit the Witches from the series, the scratchy and glitchy-like sounds fit them so well oddly enough. The lyrics meanwhile make me think of Homura and Madoka, though I’m not entirely sure why. The lyrics fit Homura, especially this line: “The reason I came to see you, the reason I let hearts float, is that you have wished for it strongly. I want you to trust me with your fate” which, in a way, represent her constant looping. She’s pushing on because Madoka asked her to. Remember, she nearly gave up in timeline three until Madoka made her request. That is what rejuvenated Homura. Also, the portion with the “trust me with your fate” makes me think of when Homura begs Madoka to let her protect her.
However, the lyrics give me an obsessive vibe, especially these parts: “You are alone. A slave to delusion. An uncontrolled dropout.” this and “The almost-unused body of yours is hopping, the dim eyes of yours are a bit confused, my beloved, you are my doll, true to desire, crazy love inside” and one of the comments even say it’s about abuse. Homura did become obsessed (with either Madoka or her safety) and did develop a tunnel vision focusing on her only, but I wouldn’t say their relationship is abuse. Plus, this scene feels like manipulation, and I can guarantee there isn’t any manipulation in their relationship, as far as I can tell…
The song also gives off a surreal yet dark atmosphere, which is similar to the series and yes, I agree with you on the Witches portion. It’s a weird sound, sort of glitchy too, kinda like a Witch. It’s a very complex song, just like the series, and it’s giving me some thoughts but I think I won’t voice it here.
Okay! I think that is all I can say about the song! So, just a little reminder, I may have misread or misinterpreted certain scenes, and I do agree with you on most parts. Honestly, stuff like this is very much not my stromg suit I guess. I’d suggest you ask others, especially since I haven’t been here for very long either (a few months, I believe) and because I am not very good at this 😔 If you want, maybe you could ask @evergreenalice (they seem to be really good at analyzing stuff like this) or maybe @homuraakumaakemi. He seems to know a lot more about Homura than I do, I’m probably only scratching the surface. Also, they’ve been in this fandom much, much longer than I have, so you could always ask them too!
Anyway, I hope this answered your question, even if slightly. Thank you so much for the ask as well, this is my very first ask!! Feel free to ask any more questions!
Oh and here’s the link to the song I heard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5wYntIGTNE

Am I the only one who loves that not only did Shoto blatantly reject the masterpiece label but straight to Toya's face how strong he was in front of their father. Endeavor's face at his weakest really cements it and now he just literally crawled to his son when he can't run away anymore.
I wonder how Toya felt when Shoto told him how strong he was and how he truly is someone awe inspiring despite being a villain.
I also feel so sad for Toya that even his stranger of a brother Shoto acknowledges him and gave him more compassion and validation than any other person in his family, especially Endeavor.
Part of me hopes Toya will give Shoto a similar speech something like "I still hate you, but you're NOT like DAD/ ENDEAVOR you never were and never will be because you're a real hero but that means you'll always be my half baked brother. "
What do you think?
I know the Todo plot isn't over, and we are only switching to Toga's fight with Ochaco.
Well to be honest, while that all sounds like it’d be lovely, I’m not sure those two are really on that level of friendly yet.
I’m still unsure how Touya feels for his family after 390 but I’m leaning towards the negative; and Shoto saying Touya’s fire was stronger than his felt less to me like he’s acknowledging his strength as you suggest and more like he’s calling Touya wrong for thinking Shoto’s this great masterpiece. (I think it's mainly Shoto's expression in the scene.) I can appreciate an optimistic view on things, but I personally feel there’s still a lot of growing & bad blood that needs mending between those two before they get where you’re suggesting; right now they still feel mostly antagonistic.
But on the subject of what they’d be like after that mending: I could see that acknowledgement from Touya that Shoto’s not an extension of Endeavor, although I think that’s something they both already know. Touya’s beef with Shoto reads to me as being because he's the only thing Endeavor cares about (specifically more than his other children). And I don't think Shoto's really worried about being like Endeavor for a long time; much as he wants to prove that by being a hero to put others at ease. So I think Shoto could appreciate that kind of acknowledgement, but I wonder how much he really needs it. Eh, maybe he does what do I know.
Actually on that subject, one thing I do hope they could do for each other is maybe somehow get them to stop caring about other people acknowledging them. Mostly Touya, I really think the correct course of action for him is to learn to stop caring about getting Enji's attention; but I've long thought Shoto could learn to be a bit more self-centred too. Maybe they could help each other that way.
(And see here for my thoughts on the Todo-plot not being over.)

Hoooookay, so, “defanging Clan culture”. This is something I’ve noticed pervasive in a lot of people’s propositions for “a better Clan culture” (and by extension, other societies like the Tribe and the Sisters). They see the unfairness either consciously or unconsciously built into the societies and go, “That’s bad,” and reactionarily erase it from their own work. The Clans forbid medicine cats from having families for stupid reasons, so these medicine cats can have families. Adoption is treated weirdly by canon, so these Clans have Correct™ ways of viewing adoption. I could go on.
However, the end result is an unrealistically utopic society. The code is designed to be free from abuse; not a single bad thought enters the head of a character unless The Plot Demands So; toms, mollies, and jacks have nothing stopping them from filling any role; everyone regardless of age, gender, ability status, background, sexual orientation, mental status, etc, is happy because this society welcomes and accepts all.
I’ll take my leave before the flowers start singing.
Now, if you just want to experiment with an idealized Clan culture with zero shades of darkness, more power to you.
But I think something a lot of people are misguided on is that a well-built setting doesn’t necessarily mean a utopic one. Many stories have unfair aspects to their fictional societies, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with depicting these or having a protagonist who believes in something counter to what we do, even if said protagonist never changes their opinions on it by book or series’ end (especially in adult media, and to a lesser extent in YA).
What I think is more constructive and elevates worldbuilding is instead to work out the “why is it like this” and the “how did it come to be like this” and delve further into the “what if it was…”. Take medicine cats not having families, for instance: canon’s “why” and “how” are very similar, “a medicine cat couldn’t be a mom and a doctor and so forbade anyone else from having a family.” Most of us find that very stupid. A reactionary approach would just go, “a medicine cat can have a family,” but a reconstructive approach would integrate medicine cats’ celibacy into the culture by instead going, “medicine cats cannot build families for a religious reason; they are to be as detached from the moral realm as possible so they can remain attuned to their warrior ancestors, and this attunement is muddied by indulging in earthly things like raising a family.” Unfair? Yes, but it’s good worldbuilding.
Before someone puts words in my mouth, what I’m not saying is, “I think the Clans need to be grimmdark,” but what I am saying is, “think about how the Clans (or Tribe or Sisters or whatever) would realistically view X or Y and how they interconnect with other aspects of their culture.” It’s okay for a society to still need growing up to do; aren’t we all like that?
Side-note before I finish: while thinking about this in relation to canon Warriors, it came to me that part of the reason why we as the readers are so miffed at why the code hasn’t been changed to alleviate inter-Clan relationships despite constant drama surrounding them (ignoring the aspect that the authors love forbidden romance), is because it keeps getting shoved in our faces so often and constantly abused for drama. Had forbidden relationships not be used so often as instigators of drama, I don’t think we would’ve spurred the Erins into addressing it in TBC and ASC.

Currently in my TFA long rant era don’t mind me.
The guy who took over Sumdac’s business: Dipshit
The Headmaster: Fuckface
So. The headmaster guy who is working with the guy who replaced prof. Sumdac piss me off because of one single thing they did. To get out of being arrested, the guy who is running Sumdac’s business pressures Fanzone so he won’t arrest the headmaster. Every argument made is invalid (legally) solely on the basis that the police don’t need to tell you why your being arrested in America, you can’t be held for more than three days without being told why you were arrested. So when Dipshit argues with Fanzone about why Fuckface can’t be arrested it’s invalid because he isn’t a person who would have any authority on that and Fanzone is not legally obligated to provide an explanation. If or not that should be allowed is a different question, I think if you get arrested you should know WHY you are being arrested but I’m also 18 and an idiot.
Anyway, Dipshit’s main argument as to why Fuckface cannot be arrested is “he was in international waters between America and Canada.” and that he didn’t steal the boat he was on because it had been out of commission for years and was just sort of there. Ok. You just fucked yourself but fine. First off, international water is not a lawless zone. Their is international laws (war crimes, for example) and the laws of the sea have been around since we’ve been able to sail. You MUST fly a flag of a nation on your vessel if you’re in international waters, that flag would need to be the flag of the nation that the ship is registered in. This has been around since at least the 1800s. An American ship lost its flag and was docked in the Netherlands, because the ship couldn’t leave without the flag (I think it may of had something to do with pirates but I could be wrong) the Dutch re a,de the American flag from a description. Although it might not of been an official law or a law of the same name, it was still a rule that was enforced. This is not a new thing. I do not recall seeing an American flag on that ship. Also Fuckface would have been sailing a decommissioned ship that was not up to standards and he definitely doesn’t have the correct certifications to be sailing it. But that’s a bit bit picky and it’s not even the worst part of the argument.
Dear reader, assuming anyone reads this, I would like you to find a map, or a globe. Please find North America and find where America and Canada are. TFA is set in Detroit, Michigan. So the body of water would have to be a Great Lake. Please, turn your attention to that fact that the border between the USA and Canada is a FUCKING LINE. International waters are at least 200 miles out from the shore of the nation, the border between the US and Canada is similar to that of the border between Tennessee and Georgia. That is to say, it’s really fucking thin and was decided on by a line. International waters between America and Canada do not exist in the Great Lakes, you are either in America or you are in Canada. If Fuckface was in Canada then he just illegally crossed a border and was carrying technology, the purpose of this tech is explicitly stated to be for war. So he’s potentially sending technology to terrorist that are based in the country that is arguably America’s closest ally and the country that we trade the most with (some graphs say it’s China, it’s not. We trade the most with Canada.). So not only has Dipshit admitted that Fuckface illegally transporting military grade weapons to our ally, he also admits that Fuckface is a major security threat and potentially a terrorist who is plotting to overthrow the Canadian government. Is that a stretch? Absolutely. But they tell you “anything you say can and will be used against you” for a fucking reason. It is your constitutional right to shut the fuck up and not incriminate yourself. This is no longer a DPD issue, it’s now gonna either be handled by the CIA or FBI and probably the government of Canada. Do you understand the damage that could be done if our biggest trade partner became aware that we let someone who everyone has reasons to believe was transporting weapons illegally go without any sort of push back? It’s one person but that could majorly damage our working relationship with Canada and other countries because it would be international news. We are in a trade agreement with Canada and Mexico that is very good for us. We don’t want to jeopardize that. I don’t think you understand how this could impact our foreign trade. Regardless it’ll make America look incompetent and also an easy target for security breaches.
Fanazon had a good reason to arrest Fuckface, he had multiple ones. Fuckface should have been arrested and then he could finally stop showing up. I hate him and I hate the episodes he’s in because he’s in them. Fuck you headmaster >:(

does this S4 song hint at S5 time meddling?
In the scene in 4:01 where Dustin and Mike are looking for a D&D sub, the song “Play With Me” by Extreme plays right after Dustin hangs up the phone:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think others have noted how the song itself is anachronistic for 1986, seeing as it was released in 1989. This would suggest it has additional importance as a song selection, since they’re usually careful about these details.
I also find it *very* interesting that the guitar solo section of this song was also featured in a scene of the movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989). If you haven’t seen it, Bill and Ted are high school students on the verge of failing out of school when they are contacted by a man from the future, who tells them that the future of world peace depends upon their ability to pass their history project. (This is because passing school allows them to stay together to work on their music, which is destined to solve all the world’s problems.) Using a time-traveling phone booth, they travel across human history to temporarily capture famous historical figures to be involved in their presentation. At one point, several of them end up at the local mall and mayhem ensues ("Play With Me” starts at 0:49):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8UGAbAPPkk
Why I think it could be an intentional reference:
The song wasn’t released yet in 1986, as noted above, yet they chose to use it in ST (and I believe it’s the only S4 song like this, but correct me if I’m wrong). While the lyrics “do you wanna play with me” are obviously relevant for Mike and Dustin’s scenes here, I think there might be more to this, because...
The song being “out of place” in time for 1986 could relate to the time-traveling elements of the plot of BTEE (...and ST?...whatever’s going on, we know that specific times/dates have been emphasized in ST, there’s lots of clock imagery/etc., and we already have direct Back to the Future references in ST)
“Play With Me” is used very memorably in BTEE - not only is it during one of the most chaotic scenes in the movie, but it’s used diagetically (meaning characters in the BTEE universe hear it) as a time-traveling Beethoven experiments with musical equipment in the mall
BTEE is a popular 80s movie, so it wouldn’t be an obscure reference for a lot of the audience of ST (and if there’s more to this connection in S5, it would fit in with the 80s nostalgia of ST)
When “Play With Me” is used in ST, it starts playing during the shot of the phone, and the use of the phone is integral and iconic in the time travel in BTEE
Phones in ST appear linked to several lingering mysteries (how did Will call Joyce from the UD? Why couldn’t Mike get through to the Byers family in California even before Joyce started her new job? Why does Joyce get mysterious phone calls in S2? How and why is electricity connected with UD-related phenomena?)
Other similarities include:
high-school-aged unlikely heroes in both stories
themes of “saving the world”
this electrical storm imagery:
Tumblr media
(above: electrical disturbances in stormy clouds before the arrival of the time-traveling phone booth. Could be coincidence, but I see some similarity with Mind Flayer/UD imagery.)
this line--probably nothing but I couldn’t leave it out:
Right as Bill and Ted watch their future selves arrive in the time-traveling phone booth for the first time...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Ted says, “Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”
What I’m wondering now:
Could this reference support the idea that ST characters will be interacting with their own S1-4 timelines in S5? Aside from other ST-related reasons we’ve had to wonder about this possibility, Bill and Ted’s story includes scenes of them interacting with themselves in their current timeline as well as in the past. They’re seen giving their previous selves advice or placing items in convenient locations so that their plan can succeed.
How does this possibility relate, if at all, to the fact that the UD was “frozen in time” on Nov. 6th, 1983? There are no explicitly stated alternate dimensions in BTEE, but if Bill and Ted had failed, they would have ended up in a different timeline, and this would have created a paradox. Could our characters be in a similar situation? How are time and alternate dimensions related in ST?
Is it significant that Mike is also shown in a phone booth in S4? (In the Nevada desert calling NINA.) If ST5 builds on BTEE references, are these scenes foreshadowing S5 roles for Mike and Dustin in particular, or the Party as a whole?
Dying to know what anyone else thinks too!

One of the reasons I love sskk is that you get the best of both worlds. One day I will analyse the way they are both mirrored versions of each other and the same and the next day I will clown them to hell and back because both are dumbasses (affectionate)
(Sorry if I'm sending you too many asks. I don't have anyone in my life that has read BSD, so this gives me a chance to talk about it [and my sons]. Love your blog ^-^)
THAT IS SO TRUE. They are a full 360° ship where you just can't go wrong. They'll be unpacking their deepest fears and bringing out the darkest sides of their minds and hitting and hitting and hitting because they hate themselves so much that they can't help but wanting the person that is most similar to them dead and then right after they'd be like “this riding experience is terrible” and “want to get some tea or something” and “you don't shop normally in normal places!” and whatever delightful thing their inexperienced attempts at plotting in chapter 85 was. They're profound and silly at the same time and it's so amusing and it basically forces you to want to pinch and pull at them untill you've seen all the forms their interactions can take.
Random babbling incoming but like. Their apparent stupidity and simplicity is exactly as important as the narrative symbolism and depth of their connection, because that's what makes them human, and relatable. We CAN'T all be supergenius, and sskk are so so ///so/// flawed, and it's so beautiful in its own way!!! Because humans are flawed, and it makes them feel all the more realistic and easy to sympathize with. And - crazy enough, listen to me carefully here - this duality of depth and simplicity is itself yet another side to the way the two mirror each other. Where Atsushi is always dwelling on his past and overthinking his actions, Akutagawa holds a way more simple, straightforward mindset: he's the “what a foolish question” and he's the “I don't need words, only actions”. I think they really work perfectly together, because Akutagawa often comes as someone who can help ground Atsushi from the ghosts that surround him, make him understand that the past is gone and what matters is here and now (see chapter 35 “The words of your past are fundamentally unrelated to who you are now”). Relating such concept, it's now been more than a month but I haven't been able to stop thinking about this reply from a fic author- quoting it directly because I wouldn't be able to explain it any better. (Please, make sure to read their works if you have the chance, they're incredible)
one of my favorite parts of bsd is how it addresses that 1. your emotional realities are valid and should be lived out and 2. sometimes mental blocks are solved not by indulging in them but by a reality check. sometimes when a person says “it feels like i’m drowning in my emotions”, “learn to swim” is a correct response. it’s silly and funny, but it’s also true. akutagawa engages with a lot of atsushi’s emotional realities by directly telling him: you have to move on. not in a “get over it” dismissive way, but in a “that’s just what you have to do” way. it’s a reminder that things are not hopeless, and they could never be, and indulging such a notion is mighty silly.
That's exactly it. I've particularly been reflecting over the “learn to swim” figure because it's. so silly and at the same time so serious and important in the way it perfectly‚ flawlessly exemplifies this aspect of the sskk relationship and in what Atsushi and Akutagawa are so different. The way they can actually, realistically help each other overcome their insecurity and fears, the way they unintentionally yet perfectly push each other to be better people every day makes me insane.

Finally reading the full XY volumes!
For context, XY is my least favorite Pokespe arc, so I decided to give it a second chance hoping that the extra chapters and better art in the full volumes would help me like it more. But did it?
What I liked:
I will say that the extra “filler” chapters really helped pace out the story much better and warmed me up to the characters! The Pokemon-Amie and Super Training chapters in particular. It felt weird not having an explanation in the originals for Y’s Sylveon, let alone an Eevee. This is why I disagree with people nowadays hating filler content. Done right, it helps with character and worldbuilding in small subconscious ways that can help an audience enjoy a story more!
I do enjoy how bold the arc starts, having Vaniville be decimated by the legendaries in the first chapter!
Reading the XY arc chapter-to-chapter and mini volume to mini volume, it felt like X took much longer to even help his friends. Now reading the arc all at once, he feels much less stubborn and selfish, which is good!
Minor thing- removing Y’s nudity is the only instance of censorship in Pokemon Adventures that I actually appreciate. It doesn’t disrupt the plot or make no sense like censoring Green’s Pokeball booby trap, Emerald’s pee joke, or especially Norman and Mirei’s abuse.
Apparently, a lot of the Gurkinn stuff was added in the full volumes? My memory on it’s a bit foggy but that’s wild to me if true- it just feels so plot-important. No wonder I felt the arc was badly-paced on my first readthrough!
Speaking of which, I love that we get chapters dedicated to non-dexholders again! It feels like we last got stuff like that with Keldeo in BW or the Hoenn Gym Leaders!
A lot of the other things I like about XY have been said by most other people already and apply to Pokespe as a whole. Battles are fun and creative, making great use of Pokemon trivia from their dex entries, the leads are unique and well-written compared to the rest of the franchise, there’s a good mix of dark and light themes, and the returning characters are fun and meaningful cameos!
What I disliked still:
It’s still really hard for me to suspend my disbelief that Team Flare managed to silence or arrest everyone who saw the Xerneas-Yveltal battle or its aftermath, especially in the age of the internet.
The gang learning most of the important plot stuff from Team Flare constantly spilling their plans kind of killed some of the tension for me, to be honest. Also them letting all the grunts go instead of capturing them for info or just to turn them over to the authorities.
Sycamore not realizing Lysandre is evil is stupid in any version of XY’s story, I’m sorry.
Team Flare’s brainwashed victims having the “same personalities” felt a bit lazy still. Brainwashing is one of my least favourite tropes though, so I might be biased there.
I think the manga over-corrected with Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno. Instead of all being overly positive and aimless like in the games, being put in constant danger in the manga means they’re all similar levels of scared and stressed, so their personalities don’t stand out all that much either. Shauna especially just being a similar aggressive and serious type like Y, just with less of a backstory. That one weird sexist quip Shauna had in the Sylveon chapter also rubbed me the wrong way, too.
Minor- I still don’t get why Kusaka aged the main cast down from 17/18 to 12 in this arc. It just makes X and Y look like they got hydraulic pressed proportions-wise, and makes the aforementioned scene with Y feel gross.
Speaking of which, why is Clemont drawn SO short in this arc?! He’s normal-sized in the official art and the anime, so that’s another baffling change to me.
Minor- Malva gets her Pyroar back from Aliana after the Diancie chapter where she already has Pyroar- is there something I’m missing here?
While the pacing has vastly improved compared to the mini volumes, it still feels off in the final two volumes. Suddenly taking an intermission from the Ultimate Weapon to introduce Zygarde practically out of nowhere just feels clunky. Compared to the anime where they had both Zygarde and the Megalith planned months in advance with proper foreshadowing. Or a better comparison would be the RS manga, where both evil teams planned on using Groudon and Kyogre from the start, and that’s what we end the series on.
TLDR: Overall I’ve really warmed up on this arc! I had way less confusion reading through it thanks to the extra chapters, and I’ve grown to understand X a bit more as a protagonist. I still have some problems with the arc, namely how the rivals are handled, and how Team Flare is presented as an omnipresent all-controlling shadow government when their members at all levels constantly spill their secrets. If you have any other thoughts, facts, or even disagreements, I’d love to hear them!
I’d say this reread has put XY above B2W2 and maybe SwSh in my ranking of all the arcs, which is still something! Now we all have to wait and see how ORAS’ full volume release changes its place on the rankings, hehe…

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like since The Little Mermaid live action is very different from the original and kind of its own thing, we could say that in this specific version, Ariel’s race does have a special place even though it doesn’t affect the plot at all? I mean, I’m pretty sure that the change from a European setting to a more Southern American one (where there’s plenty of Black and Brown people) was heavily influenced by the casting of Halle Bailey (which is absolutely not a bad thing)! And it fits perfectly with this specific version of Ariel!
Because I don’t think it would have happened if they had cast a white actress? And I feel like either they had planned the change of setting way before casting and already wanted a Black or Brown girl before auditions even started (and I remember seeing an article that said they were looking for a woman of color) or when they picked Halle they had the idea to change the setting to make something new and make it stand apart from the original?
I’m not sure wether I’m being clear or not but what I mean to say is that this specific of version of Ariel was made specifically for Black and Brown children and if they make, like, a stage adaptation of it, a white woman as the lead wouldn’t really fit? Same way that if they had decided to set it in South Asia, having a white actress playing her wouldn’t really fit, you know what I mean??
Ok so I totally agree with you but I only disagree on one point: I don't think that we can legitimately say that Prince Eric's mother the queen was queen of a south american country. Like geographically yes I know what you mean about it being tropical and surrounded by coral which only grows in a certain temperature. HOWEVER, I find it hard to believe that the live action little mermaid was based on any country in our history with the engrained chattel slavery.
Like let me see if I can give an example. So black panther is set in a similar earth to ours but the way they isolated themselves with technological advances means they weren't victim to slavery. but that history of slavery globally still impacts them and the fandom was very adamant about not shipping white women with T'Challa a Black king of an African country.
Whereas Prince Eric was the adopted son of a Black queen who I suspect didn't feel the need to only adopt a black son. The Queen didn't even seem to mind that the previously hostile mermaids were changing. Like King Triton overcame his prejudice for humans and made a solid show of mending their relationship. So I don't think its a similar setting wrt race relations to our history.
But I'm not black so I defer to other Black bloggers. Like Ariel's race matters to us because we see her in our context but that racial barrier is removed from the Queen's viewpoint because she herself is Black. So yeah if they ever cast a white Ariel taking it from the movie it would be whitewashing.

❥Drama Talk
I’ve been thinking about this ever since I finished episode 3 of Only Friends…
{ correct me if I’m wrong }
During the pool party, when Sand is playing he flips off Top which to me indicates that Top might have been an ex fling of Sand’s which obviously ended badly. This is why Sand has a one and done mentality: “I don’t sleep with anyone more than once unless they’re my lover”
To me that indicates that at some point; Sand would sleep with one person multiple times without being in a relationship with them but probably ended up catching feelings for one of them (Top) and getting hurt by them.
Sadly… he’s letting himself fall for Ray (subconsciously) because Ray gives off this energy that screams “care for me” that Sand cannot avoid no matter how much he wants to. I mean couldn’t stand Ray in episode 1 but by episode 3 he’s already showing jealousy over Ray choosing to help Mew over sleeping with him.
Sand is the kind of person to fall fast and fall hard especially for someone who gives off that vibe of needing to be loved and cared for (Ray).
Ray however won’t give up his crush for Mew easily, I have a feeling that when Ray lost his mom, Mew was the only person there for him so Ray misplaced his sorrow with love for Mew so in a way - moving on from Mew would almost be like losing his mom all over again in his mind even though logically that can’t happen.
However, Ray does like Sand but he won’t admit it to himself because he’s so blindsided by his crush on Mew to realize how much he actually likes Sand which will lead to him hurting Sand only to realize that his true feelings lie with Sand and not Mew.
So of course once Ray realizes this he’s going to throw himself at Sand only to be rejected time and time again. Eventually Ray will start distancing himself from everyone and partaking in dangerous behaviors until Mew begs Sand to save him just one last time to which he explains everything I said above to Sand who finally gives Ray the time of day and saves him from a really bad situation before it potentially takes Ray’s life.
*deep breath*
Now this is all speculation of course and just came to mind due to the other BLs I’ve watched with a similar plot line 😅 plus this only works if Top was indeed the one Sand was flipping off.

Pardon me for this, but my first reaction to this was -
DUDE!!! What The Actual FUCK!!!!!!
I am late to get to a chapter for ONE time AND THIS HAPPENS!!! C’mon!!!
Shinichiro is the second Timeleaper????? Like, WHAT?
Tumblr media
My more clam reaction, when i made peace with the fact that this is actually happening -
If you look at it, it may just make sense.
Why i think so? Here -
Tumblr media
This is from ch 7; when Naoto explains what happens when Takemitchi timeleaps.
This was not mentioned very often, because there were many significant or drastic changes in the following timelines, where the whole setup or dynamic of the situation had changed. Meaning, only those timelines, where the changes were minor (Like in this Timeline, Akkun not being in jail - which largely did not effect the whole plot), Mitchi was dead for the time being he had gone back in time.
Other timeline, where there were more significant changes - like Mitchi going from not-so-important Toman figure to one of it’s executives; we don’t know how that timeline was till Mitchi came back to future, but by the looks of it, he wasn’t dead in those.
Why did i bring this up?
I have two questions or things or reasons to bring this up -
.
.
.
1
Because, this means Dead people, while they are dead for everyone around them - they are infact in a parallel timeline, somewhere in past or future.
Does that ring a bell?
Someone who is dead?
Someone who can timetravel?
Someone who was week but still strong enough to be the centre of attention of all?
.
.
.
No, i’m not talking about Takemitchi. Shinichiro!!!
I found this interesting,
And i don’t know the original script (someone please correct me on the tense here if i am wrong), but every manga panel is drawn and written carefully. So, this -
Tumblr media
It’s present tense.
Does it mean, Shinichiro is still (in 2008) alive?
Like, okay, it’s a bit of a stretch; but the wording here sounds deliberate. It could have been written as ‘was’? We do focus more on tenses in English.
AND, if he is still in the background somewhere - what is he doing?
Takemitchi has always tried to make the following timelines better, but they always get worse; if Shinichiro is in the background, why hasn’t he done anything?
.
.
.
2
On to the next part and a VERY important question -
Shinichiro travelled “Back in Time"
When?
Was it when their dad died? When their Mom was on death bed? When Mikey started getting into fight with older boys? When the whole plane incident happened? Or when Toman founding member’s met? or when he died?
I was kinda sad we did not get much information from Mikey’s past chapters; it was just repeat of what we knew till that point, but we did get a few more insights on the situation
While there is possibility that Shinichiro travelled to a time which was never mentioned till now; it is interesting to point out these:
Two obvious difference in POV’s of Mikey and senju regarding the plane incident (it was Shinichiro who made that plane, btw)-
Sanzu, if we consider Mikey actually ripped his mouth open,  even after that he was okay following Mikey.
He knows about Timeleaping (all that destiny stuff) but he was out of spot-light for a long time
Mikey didn’t just seem to visit by his brothers bike shop on the fated night, he was called/told to be there. He saw Baji & Kazutora being taken away
(Note: Drawing parallels with Takemitchi as they were time and again mentioned to be very similar)
So, here’s what i think happened; Shinichiro after Kazutora hit him in the head, travelled back in time (no trigger this time, like Takemitchi’s first time).
Either to the plane incident, to stop Mikey from doing the same thing to Sanzu that he had originally done (i think he failed in this one, same like Takemitchi could not always stop an incident from happening)
And/or to just a few hours before he died; meaning, he had called Mikey to gift him the Bike and while he was waiting in his office, Mikey had came in and saw someone breaking into the Garage, making Mikey confronting Baji and Kazutora Killing Mikey instead of Shinchiro. Shinchiro found him almost dead, and like in Bonten timeline, Mikey triggered his Timetravel, but only a few hours back, where he gave Mikey a wrong time and instead was killed? (It’s like a paradox)
I know, this is assuming, that Shinichiro time travelled on Aug 13th. But there are also possibilities that he travelled on a complete different point.
Well, for that, i can’t seem to think of something which is mentioned till date. To me, it feels like if it’s not these two incidents then it’s completely off screen scenario.
.
.
.
Now to combine the two things, We don’t know much about OG/1st Timeline. The first TL we know is:
Toman is bad news, involving into every crime possible
Mikey and Kisaki met on 5th July 2005 (remains same for all TL’s)
Hina had dumped mitchi in this TL in 2005
Takemitchi and Mizo squad remained slaves of Kiyomasa and group, where (to our knowledge) Takemitchi and Mikey never met
Draken is dead, Akkun is in jail
Not much info on anyone else
Kisaki was acting President of Toman and Mikey was MIA
Hina (truck rammed into her) and Naoto died on 1st July
Mitchi died on 4th July, 1st time leap
Goes back - 12 Yrs
Told Naoto about the death after 12 years – future changed
But, what if there is a timeline even before this? Like, that would make sense. Shinichiro travelled back in time to save Mikey; and Mikey was fine (atleast alive) in this timeline.
Now, here -
Tumblr media
Does this mean, Takemitchi won’t have died by being pushed on the train track? that he would never have travelled back in time?
What is it that Shinichiro tried to save Mikey from? And why would it even be a concern to Takemitchi - who only met Mikey by pure coincidence and that too only in later timelines?
And, if Shinichiro was only trying to save Mikey; then why is it that whatever Takemitchi did, the future only seemed to get worse and worse? In every progressive Future, Mikey had suffered more and more, living and dying painfully, alone?
Does that mean there is one more Time leaper, a third, who is working against both Mitchi and Shin? Someone else who is already dead? It’s not that farfetched thought, there could be multiple Time leapers, we are only following one.
It is also important to know
Why did Wakasa wait till the end of Three deities war to tell Mikey about the whole Time Leaping thing?
Who else knows about it? Benkei? Takeomi?
Was Wakasa the trigger?
Did Shinichiro travel back only once or was it multiple times like Takemitchi?
Why did Wakasa never talk to Mikey or informed him about it since 2003?
What all information is Wakasa hiding?
Does Wakasa remember all the timelines like Naoto remembers?
Was Shinichiro’s time travel evolved to the same level as current (2008) Takemitchi, where he is able to glance into the future?
Also;
Dark Impulse is born out of love.
So, was it Mikey’s love for his brother that gave birth to these impulses? or is it like Shinichiro was able to pass on these impulses?
Or are these caused due to Shinichiro travelling back in time, making a conflicting image of himself inside Mikey? (This traces back to me believing Mikey having split-personality; where due to someone else trying to shape his life the way they want caused confusion within himself of who he actually is)
.
.
.
All of this is without even considering Many other factors in the story that are still left unsaid, uncleared or unattended
Let me know what you guys think. i hope i was able to make atleast 5% of sense here.
P.S.
Tumblr media
Mikey even while yelling this (plus telling him about Shinichiro too); Kept on punching and kicking takemitchi, which - pardon me - but i find absolutely hilarious.

I’m so curious what’s going on with Kousuke!!! What do you mean a hormonal imbalance?? The whole time my sister (a soon-to-be doctor) was trying to diagnose him because she said “turns out all the tics I found cute were actually illness”
Also unrelated but am I the only one still wondering who gave Shine Ae the orange sweatshirt in the flashback after her first concussion? Did we ever learn? In my head (I don’t know if this is an uncommon theory) I always believed Nol tried to hurt himself on that rainy day where he didn’t show up to see Dieter or Soushi before they became friends. What if he ended up in the hospital at the same time Shin Ae was (both would’ve been around 3-4 years ago? Give or take) and that sweatshirt has some roundabout relation to him? Maybe I’ve just watched too many kdramas and I’m trying too hard to find the red string of fate lol
Just a heads up to anyone following along! This is the last ask that I am responding as pre-236! So spoilers for this response only go up to 235 (though this one doesn't really have any spoilers)! However after this ask I'll be back up to date with spoilers up to 236! Just want to make that clear to anyone who may not be up to date with the last ep or not!
Had a bit of a laugh about your sister because lmao I've been trying to get my bestie back to reading ILY as she's a nurse and I've been DYING to hear her thoughts on Kousuke, too lmao but alas she hasn't been in the headspace for ILY yet so I continue to wait. But LMAO "all the things I thought were cute about him are AN ILLNESS?" alfjkakjfkjafjkafjk FEAR NOT to be fair I think a lot of what we see IS him, just... amplified by whatever Yui has been drugging him with and how it's affecting his system.
So the thought a lot of us had about the hormonal imbalance was that it was probably testosterone, since Hansuke didn't seem to want to divulge it in their mixed company, but also because he implied it was something that COULD be affected by stress, so it wasn't an IMMEDIATE red flag - but still something peculiar and wasn't something to be dismissed. Even outside of being drugged - which Hansuke certainly wasn't thinking of because WHO would be drugging Kousuke and god bless his sweet naive soul there was no way he was going to think of Yui doing it - there are other things that could affect his testosterone, thus it stood out to him but it wasn't "wow there is something SUPER wrong", especially given uhh.... EVERYTHING happening in Kousuke's life in the last couple months.
Ngl that ABSOLUTELY sounds like a kdrama plot LMAO like!!!!! They do NOT miss an opportunity to give their romance pairs a brush with each other before they ever "met for real" don't they? LMAO and like look don't get me wrong I love childhood friends to lovers but BOY do kdramas take it to a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL! lmaoooooooo But I have seen similar theories before! I know a lot of people have wondered if it could have been Nana who gifted it, like she just knits things and randomly gifted them to kids who were in the hospital.
That said, timeline wise that doesn't QUITE line up, though I don't think it was a reach to think it at all, because the fact that it's a mystery still makes us go HMMMMM doesn't it? Nol met Dieter the summer before high school, so if he did try harming himself at that time (and yes, I, too, think that he did), it would have happened after Shinae's hospital time, which was in middle school and she was out t finish school before the term ended, so Nol's event would have come after (assuming we have the timeline correct of course!).
But YEAH it still remains a mystery and I'm really, really curious. I had initially wondered if Alyssa might have done it, the one thing she could do for her guilty conscience because you KNOW her parents didn't want to get any more involved in it and probably paid off the school to keep it under wraps and keep her name out of it, but the sweater and hat seem like they were probably handmade, so I don't think my initial thought held any water. Of course that doesn't rule out Nana as a potential, because a Christian lady like herself might participate in church charity efforts and making gifts for children who have been in the hospital for a long time could have been something she might have done in the past! So while Nol himself may not be directly connected, that red string of fate you're looking for could still be there, in a somewhat subverted way, haha!
I really look forward to finding that out because I still find it so interesting that Shinae said "this shirt isn't even mine" when that lady threw her drink on her. What the heck did she mean?!

My Headcanon Regarding Anthony Strallan’s Shoulder Injury
I’m literally crying because this is the second time I’m writing this post. Pray it makes it this time.
Warning: Long ramble below!
Photo below for reference and ogling.
Disclaimer: I am not a medically certified Anything.
Tumblr media
I started writing this as a Headcanon/Author’s note for an Andith one-shot I’m working on. But it’s started getting long lol so I figured it could be interesting enough to share on here!
I know there exists (somewhere) a popular fanon about Anthony’s relatives but I’ve never seen one regarding his injury (please correct me if I’m wrong of course!). Please note, that these ideas were thought up by yours truly and are only backed up by educational guesses, extensive google research, and random nerdy anatomy trivia that I have because I’m into kinesiology. Also, I’m high.
Warning: mention of bullet injuries
Anyways! Below for more!
Anthony’s injury is caused by damage to his brachial plexus which he suffered via bullet wound in the back (below the shoulder). The brachial plexus (google it, it’ll make sense when you see it) is a network of nerves that send signals from the (cervical) spinal cord, to the shoulders, arms, and hands.
The main area of damage is right next to the armpit, below the shoulder’s ball-and-socket joint. The bullet entered and exited cleanly, without hitting bone or leaving a trace behind (which is why his arm was not amputated).
While his arm is often referred to as “useless”, it is not completely paralyzed. He still has his sense of touch, but suffers from bouts of numbing, extreme weakness, and a nearly nonexistent grip. He is able to move, (especially at his elbow with the support of his left arm) but it’s so stiff and heavy that he’s better off not forcing it.
The sling is only bound around his hand, and not his whole forearm or wrist. If you think about it, a sling that supports at the hand still needs muscle support from the bicep (to keep the forearm “afloat”, if you will) - which he is clearly able to do. Otherwise, his “deadweight” would cause his wrist to bend, causing more discomfort in his hand - this is where he would benefit from a sling wrapped around his whole forearm.
The reason he prefers the sling (rather than have his arm hang at his side) is because the position prevents less numbing in his forearm and hand. If he just “deadweighted” his right arm everyday, the weight would only add pressure to the brachial plexus, causing even more numbness - his shoulder would get tired faster and would probably slouch to the right as well.
In the sling, he is better able to support the weight of his arm (again, keeping the arm “afloat”) - no compression, less numbing, and less stiffness. This also keeps his bicep “engaged” daily. The only time he removes his sling is when he sleeps and he follows a detailed stretching regimen from his doctor.
Now, in relevance to my one-shot…
Let’s just say Anthony is going down a similar path to Matthew’s recovery. Nerve damage has always been fascinating to me, so I’m excited to play around with physical therapy ideas to help Anthony heal. Full disclaimer: he will not be cured 100%. It’s just not my thing. No jabs to anyone who’s gone down this path, it’s just not my cup of tea ✌🏼(this is coming from someone who insists the bullet entered and exited cleanly without hitting bone or organs lol)
I have a feeling this one-shot could turn into something more - I was avoiding having to think of some amazing plot line but now that I think about it, I could easily just have his healing journey be the plot! I’ve already thought up a really cool doctor character too (it’s me, hi, I’m the sham it’s me). It could have really extensive medical chapters with smut in between! I kid, I kid, there’s no way I could write PT scenes without angst anyway lol. I wasn’t actually kidding about the smut though… Anyways, for now it’s just a really long one-shot - we’ll see!
Thanks so much for reading if you made it this far! If you have any questions or want to start a conversation please feel free to reblog/repost/ask/DM me (or whatever it is you kids do nowadays)❤️ hope to see you on FF!

Me, having to listen to someone speak about Cinder's "unparalleled talent" in combat and how she's the best villain on the show and she deserved all of her victories and her loses were all not her fault or plot mandated: "uh huh, sure. Say, what are you smoking again?"
Me, having to listen to the same person extole Ozpin as having done nothing wrong, Pyrrha is responsible for her own death and Qrow, Ozpin, Goodwitch, and Ironwood shouldnt give it another thought, and there was no problem with how she was given her information and any knowledge gaps in what was told to her were irrelevant, she knew enough: ".........oh, you're one of those"
Me, listening to how someone describes beating Ozpin that one time is supposed to be a sign that Cinder should always be invincible, Salem gettig beat up by Hazel doesnt count because she sucks, all of the other Maidens not having Plot Armor is totally valid, saying Jaune, Ren, and Nora should have died: "whelp, time to drop this discord server"
Hoo boy, I don’t normally do deep essays about my favorite shows, but here goes…
The first and third points you make speak for themselves, anon, and I’m assuming you’re responding to people who like Cinder too much and think she’s more badass than she really is.
The second point is one that I wrestle with. After growing up and realizing how much about the world was kept from me and my peers as kids (either to protect us or to influence us), I have a pretty negative reaction towards authorities that insist on keeping major secrets from people doing the work/fighting. If I were in Jaune’s position, finding out that Pyrrha had been set up for a major risk without being given all the information, I’d probably want to beat Ozpin senseless, too.
However, I think it’s actually good writing that things go the way they did! Sure, Arkos is easily my favorite ship and my shipper brain instantly tries to find ways for things to turn out better for Pyrrha! But in service of the whole plot, it’s great drama to have a secret leader fighting for humanity who has been betrayed before and now can’t bring himself to trust anyone, creating tension after it leads to people dying. Ozpin himself has said that he made more mistakes than anyone alive, and we didn’t understand what he meant at the time, but by god we get to learn and it’s not pretty. You also see something similar with Ironwood and the Atlas military, where the authority figure decides that only they know what needs to be done, even if it leads to people being hurt, and it ultimately costs Ironwood everything (if it’s not clear, I’m not a member of the “Ironwood did nothing wrong” crowd)
It’s difficult for me to reconcile what the “correct” course of action is regarding secrets (which also makes for a much better dramatic story). Ozpin has some justification in not revealing everything to everyone because there were obviously betrayals or people who went rogue and made things worse (Lionheart and Ironwood). However, people like Jaune, Raven, and Hazel are also justified in feeling betrayed or lied to while their loved ones are being killed in a fight that they were kept from understanding.
The closest thing to a big moral statement that I can find in RWBY is that when people decide not to trust and push people away, it ends in tragedy (See: Pyrrha, Summer, Ironwood, etc). Even when it’s for the best reasons, the strongest heroes fail when they fight alone, and they succeed when they trust each other and fight together. (Plugging another of my favorite shows: “Mandalorians are stronger together.”) I’ve seen comparisons between Jaune and Hazel, where one chose to burn the world down and the other got up and kept fighting for the world to be safe, and I like the conclusion they made: the difference is that Jaune remained with his friends and trusted them while Hazel turned away from everything. I wouldn’t want to guess if there’s a planned resolution for the show, but if there is then I would think that Ozpin/Raven/other characters learning to trust again would play a big part.
Tl;dr It’s good dramatic writing for there to be a struggle between keeping things secret and trusting others, even though it led to two of my favorite ships being sunk (Arkos/Fairgame). Hopefully we see more people learning to trust each other and it saves the world.

spoilers for trailblazer-related plot points during the jarilo-vi final boss fight, though not for the boss themself
ok so theory time
we met qlipoth the preservation in the simulated universe first (in world 1) & then later unlocked the path of preservation
(we also got the fire element in jarilo-vi, an ice world, which is a related-but-separate thing. this is kinda a stretch but i think it’d be interesting to get an element that counters wind like fire does ice. definitely not for angst reasons, i promise. and i think it’s cute that we got to match paths with march 7th and potentially dan heng first)
since we met lan the hunt next (in world 2), if the trend continues we’ll get hunt mc next
…i don’t actually know which aeon we meet in world 3, if any — i haven’t gotten that far and wasn’t able to find much online 😓 input is welcome [edit] in world 3 we meet nanook the destruction and immediately get murked (thank you @yeeted-into-the-multiverse!) why am i not surprised… at least we got an interaction with them, i guess, even if that interaction was murder
but from what my friends have told me and what i’ve dug up online, it seems like we meet ix the nihility in world 4 and yaoshi the abundance in world 5. correct me if i’m wrong bc, again, i haven’t gotten that far myself
(and of course we may meet other aeons like fuli the remembrance and aha the elation in world 1, it’s just that they don’t have playable paths.)
so i’m gonna guess that, for path progression, it’ll go like:
destruction [canon]
preservation [canon]
hunt
???
nihility
abundance
???
not sure whether we’d get erudition (nous) or harmony (xipe) first but i kinda wanna go with harmony…? which would leave my beloved aoe trailblazer ‘til last rip
^and this is mostly because we got asta as a kind of “tutorial” character — and i know we were given herta too! asta just came first.
(but also i think it’d be funny to see trailblazer bounce from harmony to nihility. imagine the whiplash for their teammates.)
just for kicks, elements to go along with them:
physical [canon]
fire [canon]
ice
wind
lightning
imaginary
quantum
reasoning:
canon.
canon.
wind is fast & i think ice is a good counter to that. slow enemies down, freeze them. can’t attack if you’re frozen.
this was actually the last one i put down via process of elimination kek. but, coincidentally, it ties back into matching with march (ice) and dan heng (wind) again so i’m happy with it.
honestly i think it’d be really neat if the trailblazer ended up with a similar skillset to kafka — lightning + nihility.
imaginary and quantum both feel like endgame elements to me since they kinda stick out against the more “mundane” elements.
a lot of early-game enemies in the space station are weak to quantum. said enemies are the antimatter legion, followers of nanook, the big bad. so it wouldn’t surprise me if they became late-game enemies as well, or if nanook shared that weakness.
i think that’s everything i’ve got. i’ll reblog this with updates as i’m proven wrong or right.
i’m probably not the first person to bring this whole thing up but i don’t care because i had fun thinking about it /lh
