i am going to say something controversial here. i don't think Ed is that happy to sit and fold laundry. I don't think Ed is happy to be sitting in a place with nothing else to do. I think he would get bored real quick again of these repetitive tasks.
I am not entirely convinced with "I'm folding socks. And that's completely okay." I don't think it's that okay with him. At that moment, he's trying more than anything to reassure Stede that this is what he wants, that this is a choice he made and Stede shouldn't feel guilty for it - and at the same time he is worried that without his beard, now visually stripped of that persona, Stede won't find him exciting anymore. I think in this scene Ed is trying very much to overcompensate, as he is trying to seek Stede's approval that this is something they can both settle for, that he's content here and hopefully Stede is too, right? This is a best-case scenario for the two of them, given the circumstances.
He folds the socks then unfolds them and then folds them again. His hands are itching for something more to do. He wants the finer comforts of life but he loves the seas too much to settle for no adventure at all. He didn't think he was allowed to want anything more. His eyes light up at the idea of inventing new names, escaping to China, a new hope blooming at the prospect of a new life where he is loved by Stede and it fuels his energy his shoulders don't slump and he gets so excitable at the prospect of the escape he was all meh about until a moment ago. He wants another adventure, he wants the seas he wants the piracy of it all.
He just doesn't want it to be as rough and cutthroat as he is used to. He wants to mellow out. He wants to be able to pirate merchant ships and then welcome Stede with loving arms on their shared ship. He wants the middle ground, the sweet spot where things are fun to loot and pirate when he's doing it with Stede. That's the most fun he's had in years, maybe ever. He wants the loving environment Stede creates for him to explore these softer parts of himself, something he has been missing all along. I agree that he feels the need to sever himself from "Blackbeard" in this process but I feel like if he retired completely he would be unsatisfied, it would not keep his soul still. He would love folding laundry if it wasn't the only thing he does.
I feel like the ideal way for Ed to be happy is if he gets to be a pirate, have his adventures on the high seas, where he lets Stede take the lead in the looting but without feeling the need to contribute to the looting to feel happy about this shared equality of co-captaincy. He wants to be seen as soft, as loving and be soft and loving. He doesn't want to be a pirate from the necessity of it as he had been pushed to before because of poverty, among so many other things. He wants to be able to enjoy his life, finer silk and marmalade on toast. He also wants to get to choose when he wants to be "the dread pyrate Blackbeard" for shits and giggles bc planning the theatrical antics of their piracy makes Stede laugh, but not have to perform this role in a way that is taxing and all consuming, like it had gotten for him until he met Stede and found a respite; and realized he was allowed to want something more, something different.

Sasha Archivist au
Tossing my hat into the ring to answer 'What would have happened if Sasha had been made archivist instead of Jon'.
Personally, I believe that Sasha as head archivist would not start the apocalypse, but everything would still be sad and terrible. Let me explain:
First and foremost: addressing Sasha James' character. Since she died in season one (crying), we actually have fairly little to go off of. In that one season, we can only say a few things about Sasha. BUT mag 161 then goes ahead and turns everything we know about her on its head. She tells Tim that there's really no such thing as a real you, and we get the sense that maybe we didn't really know Sasha at all.
So, what does this tell us about Sasha as an archivist?
I think the most important piece of information regarding Sasha James, as a character, is her connection to Gertrude Robinson in Mag 161 and 162, and I believe it tells us all we need to know about an archivist Sasha.
Significantly, Gertrude named Sasha as her successor. This little piece of info drives me up the wall bc why did Gertrude choose Sasha??? Gertrude purposefully left the archives a mess so I doubt it was because she thought Sasha was the best academic.
Gertrude dedicated her entire life to preventing the apocalypse, sacrificing literally everything to save the world. Gertrude Robinson, needed to select the right successor, someone who would carry on her work. And Gertrude Robinson, who was an avatar of the watcher, of knowledge, must have had a good reason to choose her successor.
Because it is so important that Gertrude's tape in mag 161 is intended for Sasha. Gertrude tells her that she is entering "A place that will often demand a high price from you. Pay it without hesitation, because one way or another, the world is now on your shoulders." Gertrude has seemingly handpicked someone who knows exactly what it means when she tells them "Do what you have to do."
Because whilst we, the audience, don't know a whole lot about Sasha, Gertrude did. And what I think Gertrude Knew, is that Sasha would be able to do the same thing as her. Gertrude Knew that Sasha James would be just as ruthless and pragmatic in dealing with the apocalypse. That Sasha would make any and all necessary sacrifices.
Sasha immediately saw through Gertrude's mask of being a frail old woman. Who knew that Gertrude purposefully left the archives a state, wouldn't do what Jon did and try to reorganise them. Sasha having experienced artifact storage, would wait and trust in Gertrude's system.
Sasha, who invaded her co-workers' privacy by hacking into their computers, would have little problem joining up with the eye. Gertrude Robinson who again, knows an awful lot, put a lot of trust in the hope that Sasha would be just as cutthroat as her.
Archivist Sasha would still be a tragedy, and would still mirror Jon's descent into monster hood, but it would be a different kind. It would be Sasha's descent into ruthlessness, her making the kind of choices that Gertrude made, the kind that would have the story end with just as many dead archival assistants as in canon. But, no Armageddon. Because if you thought Gertrude feeding Michael Shelley to the distortion was bad, imagine Sasha leading Tim with a detonator to the Circus of the Other.
TLDR: Gertrude choosing Sasha is incredibly significant and implies that Sasha actually was or could have been just as ruthless as Gertrude as head archivist and thus would have prevented the apocalypse by sacrificing all of her assistants.

[ (Co)-connect ] is the newest edition to NRC corporation's plethora of idol groups! The group consists of seven members who all contribute to the group in their own ways!
Mayuu ⌚ Mayuu is the group manager and also an occasional rapper who takes care of most of the group management alongside the group's record label. Mayuu takes her job very seriously and makes sure that everyone is giving their all in their performance to keep sales up.
Miren 💙 Miren is the lead guitarist and helps with the instrumentation of most of the group's songs. Mostly the victim of playful bullying between group members but is aware that they're all for a quick laugh and let's it happen.
Chizuko 💀 Chizuko is the lead bassist and assists Miren when it comes to the instrumentation of the group's songs. She has a somewhat closed off personality and is often featured in "Chizuko saying socially questionable things for 12 minutes gay straight"
Carol 🍀 Carol is the lead pianist of the group and the 'resident bookworm' of the group. She often bickers with one of the members and is mostly known for their banter. Usually the one who writes the lyrics and/or corrects them for the group.
Yuuta 👑 Yuuta is the main/lead visual of the group and is most known for his lavish but subtle ways of showcasing his wealth via his outfits during concerts. Despite being known to be in Aroace spectrum, Yuuta is notorious in the group for being a bit of a subtle flirt. And by subtle, I mean being the 'fanservice' member.
Juvia 🪞 Juvia is the main dancer and Maknae (youngest member) of the group. She's known for her optimism and shines through her movements during performances. Definitely the one who has the most "Dance compilations" and "performance fancams" due to her charisma on stage.
Ellis 💗 Ellis is the lead dancer of the group and happens to be a bit of a newbie when it comes to the idol industry. She's had experience with performing on stage but sometimes isn't used to dancing and singing all at once. Despite her inexperience, Ellis remains determined and strives to persevere in such a cutthroat industry to help out the group.

I think everyone dogs on Taryn because this is Jude’s pov. We get an insider look into how much she’s hurt and that it’s coming from her own twin. But if Jude can break bread then the taryn’s haters should to. If they dislike taryn as a person, they need to take that hate up with the man who made her the she is: Madoc.
I also have a head cannon that in the future Jude and Taryn continue to grow as people, now that they can finally get out of the constant survival mode. I think they grow closer the older they get.
you're absolutely correct, nonnie.
i think people will be shocked to find out how Taryn-neutral i am. despite everything i've said to defend her, my thought when finishing the series for the first time was exactly that: if Jude can forgive her, then we should be able to, as well. it was a very simple, no bells-and-whistles forgiveness. i think Taryn is extremely interesting, i think her character is poised and ready for a beautiful arc, but i wouldn't trust her as far as i could throw her.
also, i've said this before and i will say it again: Madoc getting every single exemption and grace from the same people who condemn Taryn to shame on main is some kind of bullshit.
the mental gymnastics you'd have to do to say that the dude who continuously tries to manipulate Jude and her actions for his own gain, who continuously patronises/underestimates her throughout the series, and who straight up murdered her parents in cold blood in front of her cos he felt slighted, is more redeemable than a teenage girl who was 1) just trying to survive in a cutthroat world and 2) honestly was just doing what Madoc told her to do? would be laughable if it weren't so damn sad.
this isn't to knock on Madoc, either. i think he's a fantastic villain, an extremely fascinating character, and i love the dynamic between him and Jude. but there's no denying he's done some straight up reprehensible things to all of his daughters. and the lengths some people will go to defend him while at the same time tarnishing Taryn's name is wild to me.
now, i'm not saying people can't dislike a character just because. Taryn is Not a likeable character. so if your opinion of her is "she's just not for me", i think that's valid.
what i am saying, however, is Not Liking Things to the point where you make hate posts using main fandom tags, send people asks demanding they defend why they like a certain character, start discourse in the comments of posts celebrating the character you dislike, is the antithesis of fandom.
fandom is meant to be a joyous celebration of the fictional worlds/characters/things we love. if you don't like something in fiction, that's fine. but the moment you make your poor opinion of something other people's problem is the moment i take issue.
–Em 🖤🗡
p.s. i love and agree with your HC. i think that is an accurate representation of irl sibling dynamics, as well.
In Defence of Taryn Duarte

anyway, the show is so funny for making 3.07 and 3.08 sister episodes wherein ben and paxton have to watch devi/des co-opt storylines that would traditionally belong to them - academic competition and being the thing in devi’s life that outshines her grief, respectively.
in 3.07, along with des demonstrating ben’s affinity for being cutthroat in his academic pursuits, he turns up ben’s condescension to 11, all the while dressing up these ben-borrowed traits in some patented paxton so-cal chill. and the particular way his paxton-chill interacts with his ben-superiority keeps des from meeting devi on a level, either in terms of disposition or intellectual respect.
naturally, the casually supposed superiority frustrates devi. rather than trusting herself to think on her feet - which ben has a demonstrated history of inspiring her to do (see: the seawall corporation argument she pulled out of her ass and “i really have to thank you, you keep my devi on her toes.”) - devi essentially gives up by resorting to cheating. which is not to say that it’s des’ fault devi cheated - it’s very much not, she made her bad choice - but rather, it’s telling that his treatment of their rivalry led her to pursue disingenuous means of winning. the end result is that they’re not actually engaging with each other.
when devi and ben compete, on the other hand, there’s a sense of equals going toe-to-toe, only heightened by the full-on pipsqueak energy they’ll both start serving the second they lose the upper hand. more to the point, though, it’s not actually about the competition in and of itself where devi and ben are concerned. after all, their canon academic competitions are hardly more mature or productive than the debate tournament ends up being - think of the beaker smash and viva wwiii! no, it’s specifically the way they’ve developed their rapport in the fires of that competition and therefore have a well-honed ability to call out the other’s bullshit that’s important.
in the closing scene of 3.07, devi confesses her crime to des, and he calls upon his paxton-chill to let it go with ease. which is nice and everything - devi did a well enough job of holding herself accountable by telling des she cheated in the first place - but it still stands in sharp contrast to the dynamic upon which devi and ben’s intimacy is built.
in 3.08, des switches gears to become the paxton analogue as the object of devi’s burning desire.
now, if you’ve been following along with my nhie brainrot for any length of time, you know i go hard for the layers of complexity in devi and paxton’s dynamic. he’s the symbol of normalcy she craves and getting with him is the goal she’s set to prove to herself and her peers that she, too, is totally normal. when she finally does enter a relationship with him, it all at once proves her worth as datable and turns out to be more alienating than ever.
so, by merit of being the next person devi dates, des inherits the runoff of that incredibly complicated dynamic. he is also escapism from herself, though this time devi’s not trying to get out of dealing with her grief so much as she’s simply relieved that she doesn’t feel the shadow of her reaction to that grief hanging over the entire relationship (x, x). the result is that she actually gets to experience the comforting normalcy of low-stakes high school romance and lust at the same time she handles her grief head-on and with a heretofore unseen emotional intelligence.
the thing is, this all happens almost incidentally to des’ presence in the episode. his paxton-like loyalty to his shitty friend keeps him from fully engaging with devi’s horniness, and his ben-like inferiority complex where paxton’s concerned keeps him from engaging with devi’s grief.
but you know who does acknowledge devi’s sexy efforts and emotional turmoil in one loaded scene? paxton hall-yoshida.
with all that laid out, it’s clear that these episodes have two things to say about des’ place in devi’s journey. firstly, of course, is the importance of their lack of history, which affords devi a freedom from her established identity as nerd and the space to explore which parts of her high school life are important to her, what she’ll carry with her when she leaves sohs behind in just over a year.
the more interesting part, in my opinion, is the way des is sold to us as an amalgamation of everything we already know devi finds attractive: smart, dreamy, driven, and effortlessly cool. he’s supposedly the best of both worlds and, therefore, the ideal partner for devi.
in actuality, the way his ben-like and paxton-like attributes interact with each other in both episodes makes him a worse partner. possessive without being supportive, condescension dressed up like wit. though a combination of ben and paxton sounds nice on paper, the act of divorcing the two guys from their complexity and - yeah - their rich history with devi makes for a blander, shallower dynamic. the whole of both paxton and ben is greater than the sum of their parts.
at the end of 3.08, devi makes the choice to claim her identity as loser to des, and he affirms that the person he’s gotten to know is “super cool, beautiful.” their lack of history allows him to show her that she, too, is greater than the sum of her parts.
as such, this final scene marks an important turning point in the relationship. moving forward into 3.09, we get to see devi/des on its own merits, not as a blank slate for devi to sort her identity issues, nor as a ben/paxton dream combo. and we all know how that ends…

There could be only one Machiavellian daddy standing in the "Billions" finale revenge showdown between Bobby "Axe" Axelrod (Damian Lewis) and his hedge fund usurper (and dangerous presidential candidate) Michael Prince (Corey Stoll). After seven seasons of cutthroat high-finance drama and power struggles, "Billions" went endgame with the titan matchup in Showtime's series finale (now streaming on Paramount+; airing on Showtime Sunday 8 EDT/PDT). But the entire cast of characters featuring ever-evolving allegiances got its due, including longtime Axe persecutor U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti), now working with his former nemesis to bring down Prince. The multi-pronged farewell episode even featured former U.S. Attorney Bryan Connerty (Toby Leonard Moore), who hadn't been a "Billions" regular since Chuck engineered his legal problems and prison stint in Season 4 for illegal wiretapping. Connerty made a surprise appearance to receive his reinstated law license, also engineered by Chuck as a peace offering. "This show was for the show superfans; we found the ultimate landing spot for all these characters," says Brian Koppelman, who created the series with David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin. The final positions from the "Billions" finale:
Axe made Prince a pauper, and resumed his office chair throne Prince helped orchestrate Axe's downfall in Season 5, which allowed him to get his greedy hands on Axe Capital. As Axe, the heavy-metal-T-shirt-wearing Road Runner of finance, realized he had finally been defeated by Prince, he uttered the line "So this is what it is like to lose." In real life, Lewis was leaving "Billions" to return to life in England for personal reasons. So Axe was written off (exiled to Switzerland) to avoid arrest by Chuck, thanks to a tipoff from Prince. Prince took over Axe's throne and renamed the kingdom Michael Prince Capital (MPC). With Lewis and Axe back for the final season, the downfall script was reversed. Axe returned to New York, with Chuck's help and urging, to join the team trying to stop Prince. The Never Princers, who included MPC's general counsel Kate Sacker (Dola Rashad), conspired to annihilate Prince's stock portfolio while the unsuspecting presidential candidate met the U.S. president at Camp David, as his mobile phone was locked up by Marine security. With the trap sprung, Prince flew into MPC in a rage. Showing the volatile side no one wanted to see responsible for nuclear weapons, Prince threw a printer through the office window of Chuck co-conspirator and ex-wife Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff). Prince bottled his rage seeing Axe and an office full of former employees present to witness his financial demise and presidential ambitions crushed in one bad news day. "So yeah Mike, this is what it's like to lose," Axe said to Prince, parroting his own line, with a very different subject. "I bet that felt good," Prince sneered back. "What does it say about someone who wants to throw somebody's words back in their face? Not great things," says Levien of the line. "That's why we found it so satisfying." Big winner Axe reclaimed his office chair with no trumpets, but only his faithful lieutenant Mike "Wags" Wagner (David Costabile) standing just behind him. While Prince hid dark ambitions behind noble ideas, Axe sent his traders out with the capitalist battle cry "Let's make some ... money!" with The Steve Miller Band's ode to bandit living, "Take the Money and Run," playing as the exit soundtrack. "That song felt just absolutely perfect for the show," Koppelman says.
Prince went down defiantly, vowing revenge With Humpty Dumpty falling off the financial wall and Prince's world in tatters, even his loyalists disbanded. Right-hand man Scooter Dunbar (Daniel Breaker) saw the light and realized how far the power duo had drifted in its quest for power. Finding he has been spared financial ruin, Scooter announced he's embarking on his dream of conducting an orchestra. In classic villain mode, Prince admitted defeat but vowed to return and financially crush Axe and anyone else who knocked him. "This country is built on second acts, and when you see mine, you better duck and cover," Prince said. "People like Prince are not laid low by things that would lay all of us low," Koppelman says. "In three years, the guy will somehow have bought The Sphere off James Dolan."
Chuck and Wendy end up laughing over dinner Chuck, the main Axe battler in many season finales, relished the slightly less sexy victory over Prince. Chuck also finally came up triumphant in his personal life. Wendy and Chuck's marriage, and vigorous BDSM sex life, had ended acrimoniously after Wendy worked for years as Axe Capital's high-end performance coach. But "Billions" ended with the two exes smiling as Wendy walked out of Axe Capital moments after turning down Axe's return to work offer. Wendy and Chuck agreed to go on a family dinner with their two children. The final shot featured Wendy and Chuck laughing at dinner with their kids, as noted chef Connerty performed impressive culinary tricks on the teppanyaki (Moore's real-life cooking skills were often highlighted). Wendy and Chuck don't resume life as a couple, "but they settled their issues, coming to a great place of mutual understanding, fondness and co-parenting," Levien says.

sorry taste is subjective but i think some people are just being haters
the episode is good! there was a great sense of tension throughout like rhaenyra was trying so hard to maintain a level head and it so clear its going to go badly. she feels like a queen but there’s still elements of insecurity and fear and emma d’arcy is phenomenal. i don’t want to say rhaenyra doesn’t have agency or she’s passive because i dont think thats the case, but i do wish she maybe took the stance (maybe after realising daemon doesnt know the prophecy and the greens dont as a result) that she needs to quash this ‘rebellion’ to keep the realm united under her. it would be a way to keep her conflicting emotions with the more cutthroat attitude she has in f&b. also i wish daemon just didn’t speak during the scene with otto cos it did feel a bit like...that’s rhaenyra’s job.
loved the scenes with corlys and rhaenys i missed them these past few eps.
storms end looks so silly lol. but the change with aemond was fine. like he still very much wished harm on a child so like i don’t think this whitewashes him he’s just temporarily lost his war criminal status. its kinda weird that the dragons decided to act up, but maybe this will be a thing we see and could perhaps explore the targs not being super special, and maybe we could examine some of the dragonseeds not being valyrian at all, just able to tame dragons like its a skill rather than matter of blood. also ya know kids shouldn’t play with sentient nuclear missiles like i think thats a clear point here - the fairytale is over the dragons kill now. (also the scene was so much more brutal then i was imagining christ)
my one concern over the change is that the misunderstandings/less brutal versions keep happening, i think the first move being an ‘accident’ fits the theme of the show so far and has an interesting commentary on f&b as a history passed through layers and layers of propaganda. and it fits nicely with the idea of the children suffering what the parents sowed. but daemon being so for war and them not holding back on how horrible he is, and the last shot of rhaenyra are kinda comforting me that things will drastically escalate from here on out (even the constant reminders that westeros will burn (special shout out to the riverlands) sets this in motion)

Okay listen, Nathaniel Bartseq is a dick and a moron, but the other day I saw a claim that basically all the problems in Amulet of Samarkand, including the first Simon Lovelace incident, were caused by Nathaniel being an arrogant little shit, which is like... noooo?
The problems in Amulet of Samarkand were caused by:
Simon Lovelace, a full-grown adult who could call up powerful djinn at the drop of a hat, feeling the need to bully a 10-year-old kid, refusing to take even the slightest L when said 10-year-old was smarter than he expected, and physically attacked him for saying the slightest word in his own defense. Nathaniel did absolutely nothing rude or arrogant until well after Lovelace and co, three grown-ass men, asked to have him called into the room, then started insulting him and grilling him with every intention of using his failure as further ammunition to humiliate him. And to make Underwood look bad (as if Underwood needed any help looking bad. I'm sure Lovelace had plenty of ways to flex on this guy without involving a child).
Arthur Underwood, for... well okay, in the moment publicly coming to Nathaniel's defense there would have been a disaster for them both, but Mr. Underwood absolutely fucking set his apprentice up for failure by being content to sit back and let him be fed endless propaganda about the "Honorable Magician," leading to Nathaniel being hopelessly ignorant of the political realities of the situation. This is a man who locked a six year old in a room full of imps that he'd ordered to terrorize and torture him to make sure it was driven into his skull from Day 1 how dangerous "demons" were, but what, learning how cutthroat and brutal magical society is wasn't age-appropriate? Like, "keep your head down and don't rise to goading from enemies who are more powerful than you, pick your battles" is such a vital lesson for a young magician, and he apparently just didn't bother with it. I'm sure Schyler and Whitwell were / would be terrible abusive masters but come on I think they would have made an effort to teach their apprentices "social skills for magicians" from an early age because they'd anticipate this kind of shit. Seriously like there are many, many things Underwood could have down to avoid or mitigate this entire situation, or at the very least to make the lesson Nathaniel took from this "Other adult magicians are dangerous and I must interact with them just as carefully as with a demon. My master is not omnipotent and cannot protect me from pissing off a guy like Lovelace any more than he could protect me if I scuffed the pentacle we're both standing in during a summoning" instead of "My master cannot and will not lift a single finger to protect me because he is a weak spineless coward and because he hates me and does not care about me." The amount of psychological damage that could have been avoided if Underwood had gone: "Yes, he's an asshole and I know he's an asshole, but you cannot confront assholes with power this recklessly. Count yourself lucky you learned this now because if you pull a stunt like that as an adult you will die" instead of making Nathaniel feel like he was being completely blamed for trying to protect himself. Literally the only person in this book who actually gave Nathaniel genuine guidance about how to survive in magician society without sugarcoating it was Bartimaeus (well, and Lovelace, but he was planning on murdering him immediately afterward), and that's pretty sad.

So my friend, @stormkitty97, and I were voice chatting last night, trying to finish our outline for the Belle/Vil crossover fic we were writing. When we got to a certain part of the outline, I joked about how Lizzie would reacted much differently in that situation. Then it dawned on us. Both Adriana, my own "Yuu", and Lizzie, the "Yuu" from our HP/TWST crossover fic that we share, are both like corrupted versions of Jasmine and Belle respectfully. Okay, neither of them are outright villains on par with the "Great Seven"—far from it, but they are similar to the Night Raven Students and share a fair bit of traits in common with who their love interests are based on.
Adriana and Jasmine share a lot in common. They are both rich girls, who grew up a privilege lifestyle. Both are feisty and sassy young women, who are quick on their feet, adventurous and empathic/kind to those dear to them. They are both cat people. Jasmine has Rajah while Adriana has a pet cat named Morgana back in her world. (Adriana also has some similar traits with Tiana and Cinderella, but Jasmine is the main one.)
There's a lot that separates them as characters as well. For one, Jasmine is an only child with a dimwitted, but loving father who wants what's best for her and a mother who died when she was young. Meanwhile Adriana was afforded a lot more freedom growing up and instead has a book smart older sister, a Japanese-Canadian stepfather who shares a lot in common with Roy Mustang from FMA and a mother who is a cutthroat business woman like an older, female Azul, who is the CEO of a huge company. There's also the fact that Jasmine is vaguely Swana or Desi (the movie is kinda a mishmash of both) while Adriana is a latina (half Mexican and Cuban/Sicilian) from Vancouver, Canada. Adriana is in her own head and analytical while Jasmine is much less hesitant about things. Adriana, thanks to growing up in a predominantly East-Asian and white environment and being autistic, has experienced things like racism and ableism that made her less naive about the world compared to Jasmine who grew up in a homogeneous environment where everyone is a similar racial background as her.
But what really sets these two apart are Adriana's dark, or twisted, if you will, traits. She's a former popular mean girl. As one could imagine, she wasn't the nicest person back then and did a lot of questionable things that came back to haunt her, which I can't get into because of spoilers. She was betrayed and knocked off her pedestal, leaving her isolated and alone.
Even the present, some of these traits remain. She's rather cunning, manipulative, deceitful and cut throat like Jafar. She is much more willing to go to dark lengths to get what she wants as long as it wouldn't hurt anyone dear to her or get her in trouble. While Jasmine has dabbled into that like with her pretending to seduce Jafar in the animated movie, Adriana is far worse. Not to show all of my cards, so to speak, that version of Scarabia will be much different thanks to these traits and being more actually helpful for Jamil. I can't ever see Jasmine doing the same thing. She also has her other darker moments as well, during Heartslabyul after Ace told her that Riddle is trending on social media for what he said, she says something along the lines of, "Good. He deserves it." I don't see Jasmine reacting like that. Then there's her internal monologue about her saying that the Great Seven had good traits and some of their less shitty actions like murder were in the right, which...yeah, speaks for itself.
While I can't analyze Lizzie nearly as well, since she's more of my co author's creation, she shares a lot in common with Belle. Both are rather smart, bookish, curious, outspoken and willing to stand up for themselves and those they care about.
But Lizzie also shares a lot with Grimhilde (The Evil Queen) as well. She's spiteful, petty, vindictive, selfish and quick to anger. She is much more willing to stoop to darker lengths than Belle. Not to go too much into spoiler territory for a future project, there will be a plot point where Vil will do something rather morally questionable, and Belle freaks out about it. But I think if Lizzie was in that same situation, she would've not only condone his actions, but also encouraged him to do worse.
I think those darker aspects are what makes them more suitable love interests for them in some regards. While we ship them with those princesses too, there is always a disconnect since they are more virtuous people who are naturally more off put by some of their more twisted actions. Lizzie gets Vil's jealousy and anger towards Neige, because she always felt the same way about her brother going to Hogwarts while she never could. She is much more understanding and supportive of him. While Adriana never grew up under far different circumstances than either of the Scarabia Dou (because Adriana's rich, but not Elon Musk or Kardashian levels like Kalim), she understands why Jamil is so angry at his current circumstances as a servant thanks to her being less naive about the world around her and compares his living situation to how shitty people trait their domestic workers. Because of her dark traits, she is much less off put by his darker actions that he will take to bring the Asim family down. But thanks to their lighter traits being similar to the princesses, they are still able to balance them out and bring out their good sides. With them doing the same in return, makes them both better people.
Idk, I just thought those parallels were interesting.

You Were Right About COVID, and Then You Weren’t

Practicing intellectual humility, she says, is harder when you’re very active on the internet, or when you’re operating in a cutthroat culture. That might be why it pains me—a very online person working in the very competitive culture of journalism—to say that I was incredibly wrong about COVID at first. In late February 2020, when Smith was sounding the alarm among his co-workers, I had drinks with a colleague who asked me if I was worried about “this new coronavirus thing.”
“No!” I said. After all, I had covered swine flu, which blew over quickly and wasn’t very deadly.
A few days later, my mom called and asked me the same question. “People in Italy are staying inside their houses,” she pointed out.
“Yeah,” I said. “But SARS and MERS both stayed pretty localized to the regions they originally struck.”
Then, a few weeks later, when we were already working from home and buying dried beans, a friend asked me if she should be worried about her wedding, which was scheduled for October 2020.
“Are you kidding?” I said. “They will have figured out a vaccine or something by then.” Her wedding finally took place this month.

Thinking like a scientist, or a scout, means “recognizing that every single one of your opinions is a hypothesis waiting to be tested. And every decision you make is an experiment where you forgot to have a control group,” Grant said. The best way to hold opinions or make predictions is to determine what you think given the state of the evidence—and then decide what it would take for you to change your mind. Not only are you committing to staying open-minded; you’re committing to the possibility that you might be wrong.
Because the coronavirus has proved volatile and unpredictable, we should evaluate it as a scientist would. We can’t hold so tightly to prior beliefs that we allow them to guide our behavior when the facts on the ground change. This might mean that we lose our masks one month and don them again the next, or reschedule an indoor party until after case numbers decrease. It might mean supporting strict lockdowns in the spring of 2020 but not in the spring of 2022. It might even mean closing schools again, if a new variant seems to attack children. We should think of masks and other COVID precautions not as shibboleths but like rain boots and umbrellas, as Ashish Jha, the White House coronavirus-response coordinator, has put it. There’s no sense in being pro- or anti-umbrella. You just take it out when it’s raining.
The info is here.

#JamesDonaldson On #MentalHealth -  What Happens When Happy People Die By #Suicide
Tumblr media
Perhaps the most controversial ‘final’ act of life, any life, should always start conversations around #mentalhealth. And it is, perhaps, the unlikelier cases of #suicide that should ring louder warning bells for society at large Nusmila Lohani One of the most active and happy #Instagram profiles is, perhaps, #tWitch's.  His face is a familiar one, one that carved out a space in the entertainment industry in #America at least 14 years ago when he auditioned in So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD). It's a televised #American dance competition, where participants dance through cutthroat stages of the competition to reach the finals or make the top 10 list. From that list, many have moved on in their careers to bigger things, expanding the limelight that the reality TV show accumulated for them.  #tWitch was one of them.  I primarily follow #tWitch on #Instagram where he has over 4 million followers. On the #socialmedia platform, between paid partnerships, business ventures and collaborations with other dancers along with features of his co-founded dance studio, #tWitch seemed to have been doing great with his wife (who was an SYTYCD 2nd season contestant) and three beautiful #children.  His name was not just well-known in America's dancers' community, but a popular one even in some circles of A-list Hollywood celebrities.  On 13 December 2022, Stephen Laurel "tWitch" Boss died by #suicide, having recently celebrated his 40th birthday and nine years married to his wife. According to the LA County Medical Examiner, there was "no foul play" and reportedly there is a #suicide note left behind by #tWitch, the content of which has not been revealed to the media.  When the news broke, it first took me back to 2008.  I was rooting for #tWitch to win the SYTYCD 4th season that used to air on AXN, mostly because I enjoyed replicating some of his easier dance moves. #tWitch – the Alabama native on the Los Angeles SYTYCD stage – brought a lot of joy to me, the closet dancer in Dhaka who would fight over the TV remote with her older sister.  #tWitch came second place, breaking my teenage heart. And eventually, I stopped watching the show thus relinquishing my 'avid' SYTYCD TV audience status.  But #tWitch rose.  He went on to star in movies and in a short time, started to work as the resident DJ on The #EllenDegeneresShow. Reportedly, he also became a co-executive producer on the show in 2020, the same year when Ellen Degeneres faced intense backlash over a toxic work environment spanning #racial discrimination and #sexualharassment allegations.  #tWitch maintained his support for Degeneres, and said "We can't speak too much legally about it, but I'll say this, there's been love," in an interview later on.      When the news of #tWitch's #suicide broke, it took me back to his #Instagram profile next.  I stand corrected, it is one of the most active and happy feeds. I drowned myself in tributes that #Instagram users paid to #tWitch. Many are from celebrities and blue tick account holders. The ones who knew him kept saying, he was the "light" in the room and the life and joy of the party.  I understand how #socialmedia profiles seldom mirror a person's state of mind, let alone offer the real-life picture of public figures. But with this case, something else tugged at me, how a 'happy,' young (yes, 40 is young) public figure, who seemingly had a good life, died by #suicide.  And this took me to 2014.  #RobinWilliams -  in my opinion, not just the greatest comedian but also one of the greatest actors - died by #suicide at the age of 63. This shook the world, causing ripples of disbelief and shock beyond borders. More so because of the happy and joyful persona that defined his illustrious career.  Williams was misdiagnosed with Parkinson's disease before his death, according to his wife, who went on to learn of Lewy body #dementia with which the actor was diagnosed following an autopsy on his brain, reported #CNN.  What can we learn from unlikely cases of #suicide  The objective is not to limit the category of unlikely cases to those who are wealthy because that logic is primitive in thinking that wealth and/or fame, by default, can resolve #mentalhealthissues. But to broaden our perspective and dismantle our internalized typecasting of "likely" cases of #suicide. For one, seemingly happy people may be suffering from #suicidalideation. And for those who are already dealing with #suicidalideation, death by #suicide of seemingly happy public figures may work as a trigger.    Frankly, we know little to nothing about a person's state of mind or their cognitive dissonance. This 'person' can be our colleagues, friends and family members. And the more we continue to avoid, demean, mock or discourage discourse on #mentalhealth, the more we continue to walk on the same path that leads to preventable final acts.    #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.  #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleOrder your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife:From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com Suicides have claimed nearly double the number of Bangladesh lives in 2020, compared to the deaths from #Covid-19. Nearly half of the suicides were from young #adults, with 35% in the age range of five to 19 years. In fact, as many as 364 students in the country's education institutions committed #suicide from January to August of this year, according to a survey by the Aachol Foundation.  Earlier this year, speaking to TBS on the uptick in suicides among students, Tawhida Shiropa, Founder and CEO of Moner Bondhu said "More than their socio-economic state of affairs, the lack of sympathy and empathy had led them to take such a decision. I believe a little touch of empathy could have changed their whole trajectory for a few of them." This probably does not need to mean that we, individually, carry the responsibility to save people from dying by #suicide. Rather, we should strive to collectively build a support system and environment that essentially welcomes dialogue on #mentalhealth.  What we now have is a wall blocking discourse on #mentalhealth at every level, be it the dinner table conversations that still remain outdated because older generations refuse to understand what therapy is or the existence of #mentalhealth.  Or we have educational institutions, corporate worlds and industries that remain determined to focus with a hyperbolic intensity on advancements and progress reports than the #mentalhealth of its people. It's almost like the #Covid-19 #pandemic never happened nor did its incredible toll on human lives.  #RobinWilliams once said, "Comedy can be a cathartic way to deal with personal #trauma." And tWitch once said "As dancers, especially for myself, personally, dance constitutes a lot of the conversation that I have. While I'm not a ridiculous wordsmith and I can't clearly verbalize the things that I'm feeling sometimes, I'd say that I can emote how I feel by dancing, 100% of the time, and fearlessly at that." The common thread, albeit a little stretched, is curious. They both spoke of expressing themselves through their art.   This year will end in a few days. Many of us must be mulling over our year's personal progress report. This could be an opportune time to spare a moment on how we perceive #mentalhealth, both at an individual level and at a collective level. We could also consider seeing #mentalhealth in two-fold: How we can assist those who are silently, or otherwise, suffering. And how we can learn, for ourselves, to ask for help when we need to.   This is a tall order, granted. But the most simple step forward could be to be kind to each other and become open to having conversations about #mentalhealth. By doing just this, perhaps, in the new year, we will collectively step on the same page in the 21st century on understanding #suicidalideations and create environments that start a discourse on #mentalhealth.  Otherwise, we will continue to have people, some of great talent, resorting to expressing themselves through their works of art, or other channels. And then seek refuge in their last resort, which the world will not hesitate to call their most controversial and selfish 'final' act. Photo by Pixabay on Pexels.com Read the full article
