Hey everyone! I wanted to share that all 3 parts of my blog entries on how I made my red riding hood Miku cosplay are up on my cosplay blog, https://devioustofucosplay.wordpress.com I took lots of pictures during the process of making this costume so I would have lots of pictures to add to the blog. I am a visual learner so having lots of pictures helps me when reading a tutorial. I also made some diagrams for some steps that were harder to explain. These blog entries are a lot more detailed than my old ones so I hope you find them helpful!
This was totally on impulse. I really love how it turned out, it was my first time successfully using white lashes, so hurray for that. I currently have a poll up on my Instagram comparing my both my Komaeda cosplays from 2020 and. 2022, so if you’d like to put your two cents in on that be my guest.
I’ve had insane amounts of inspiration lately, but so little time, and the school year is about to start yet again… I’m dreading it, but I know that I need my education purely for the fact that I’m learning technical skills that I desperately need. Things like pro paper-mache, poly-thermal plastics, sewing classes, pattern making classes… I started this blog in the hopes of learning and sharing all of these skills with the world. I know I’m pretty slow on posting, but I’m gearing up to learn how to maximize my time so I can keep doing what I love, and continue sharing it with you all.
Alright, bye for now!! I’ll post in an infodump about a special antique sewing machine I’m trying to get my grimy little paws on. She’s part of the cosplay studio I’m working on putting together!
I’ve done another Sailor Scout!!! I’m super excited to share Sailor Mercury with you guys. We had so much fun with the bubble machine despite some battles with the wind (lol)! J.A.Vilches always does incredible photography. I love the light and airy look to the photos.
However, I wouldn’t recommend photography at the Water Wall by the Galleria (Houston). We managed some cool shots but behind the scenes, but it was PACKED with people and kind of difficult to be honest.
I hope to eventually do all of the Sailor Scouts! Which one has been your favorite so far? (Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, or Chibiusa?)
I've been hitting a wall with my dancer Dimitri recently. The big blow was two weekends ago, when I tried to put it on and couldn't get the zipper to close - my greatest fear in making a fitted garment coming to pass, on one that I invested in materials on and even more hours of time.
The location and type of zipper are a big part of the problem, since it's a side closure and lightweight separating zipper. Flimsy separating zippers are not good for tightly fitted garments. The dress was challenging to zip in January, but whatever hormonal fluctuations were happening 3 weeks later were too much.
I have a new zipper that arrived yesterday, which should be hardy while just as subtle (it's an "almost" invisible, jacket-weight separating zipper). I'll be letting out the side seam it will be on to give just a smidge more available fabric, as the zipper is very close to being able to zip. If that doesn't work, we move to converting it to a lacing closure, which will suck to install on a finished garment but won't be impossible. That has the bonus of being adjustable.
The belt dangles also have been giving me fits. I think I've finally figured out the best way to make those stiff enough but able to withstand my heatpress for the htv part based on my test yesterday. EVA foam was NOT the right choice, but felt should be fine and able to withstand the same level of heat as delicate polyester fabric without warping like the foam did. In hindsight, this feels like a lot more trouble than just 3d printing them, but I hate the concept of finishing the prints. I don't love the edges, especially on that first tester piece I've shown above, but they'll be covered by beads and these will also have rhinestones on them, so they don't need to be perfect.
I did get a few things done. I'm done with rhinestoning the skirt, including the hotfix rhinestones from my template. There are a total of 12 motifs at the bottom, which from my count of the template means there are 2000+ rhinestones on the bottom panel alone. I also finished the lower arm bracers and the upper arm bands, which took ages because I top stitched the chevrons. I need to attach the actual drapes to the upper armbands... they're sewn but I'm trying to think of the nicest way to attach them. I'm thinking gathering them into a faux bead cap type of thing, which will need to be made (probably worbla). There's also a lower bracelet to make that will be the other attachment point for the drapes.
This was a No.6 photoshoot that was taken with my Partner Syd (LittleRoseCosplays) at Alaska Comic Con with the help of our friend Seth. It was super cold out when we did this because it was late at night early February.
