Clown Frog
AKA Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad, Atelopus varius
A very pretty and funny pal!!
Clown frogs have all sorts of colorations, with some having yellow or orange or greenish markings, but some being a pretty purple!!
They range from South and Central America, generally in rocky streams or mountainous forests. They're pretty slow, and don't like going in the water! Like most colorful frogs, they are poisonous!
Their population is declining, either due to climate factors or to a pathogenic fungus. But they've been successfully bred in captivity in 2021! Hopefully they make a comeback.

today’s funky frog of the day: the clown frog (Atelopus varius)!!! this adorable friend is also known as the Costa Rican variable harlequin toad. unfortunately, this species is currently in decline- so much that it was believed to be extinct in panama for several years. a breeding program is currently happening, and it has been successful!

The Costa Rican variable harlequin toad [also known as the clown frog, Atelopus varius] is a critically endangered species existing in just a few isolated areas of Costa Rica and Panama. These diurnal, or day-dwelling frogs are often found in crevices or on rocks near streams. Captive breeding programs as well as efforts to preserve vital forest habitat are currently underway. Clown Frog by Our Breathing Planet
Via Flickr:
The Clown Frog. This is the common name for the Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad. This is a neo-tropical toad that was once found throughout a range extending from Costa Rica to Panama. Now however it is listed as: Extremely Endangered, and their numbers consist of only a single small population near Quepos, Costa Rica, consisting of fewer than 100 individuals. They prefer humid lowland regions, and may often be seen sunning themselves on rocks near streams. As is the case with many tropical frogs and toads, their skin produces a powerful toxin. #ourbreathingplanet

Once common from Costa Rica to Panama, the Costa Rican variable harlequin toad [Atelopus varius] has been reduced to a single small population near Quepos, Costa Rica, and a few relic populations in western Panama. The spread of the pathogenic chytrid fungus, climate change, and human encroachment have all contributed to this frog’s Critically Endangered status. Images by Robert Puschendorf.
