This lovely gown was first spotted on Madlena Nedeva as Lady Henrietta Sykes in the 1978 Disraeli: Portrait of a Romantic. It was seen again in a 1988 episode of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller, entitled Sapsorrow, where it was worn by Alison Doody as Sapsorrow. The dress was spotted again recently in 2019 in Gentleman Jack, where it was worn by Emma Paetz as Catherine Rawson.

I think the real crux of whether I can accept inaccurate costuming in a period movie/show is this:
is it an artistic exaggeration of historical styles, or is it a modernization of them?
I can deal with the ramen curls in Emma 2020, or the combination of a traditional Russian men’s blouse with 18th-century skirts in The Great because they’re leaning into SOME type of period Look. and things like the “Afro-Victorian” style of Jingle Jangle are clearly an artistic choice made with passion and respect for historical clothing. my own most beloved Crimson Peak is less inaccurate and more “somewhat exaggerating the visual language already present in period clothing,” which I’m totally here for
whereas things like Half-Up Olde Timey Hair of Olde Timeyness or Contractually-Obligated Leather Pants or Invisible Chemises are purely there to satisfy a modern audience’s sensibilities and make the movie more #relatable
which pisses me off

This doublet is a great example of how high definition television has greatly impacted the details of what we see. Makeup artists, set designers and costume designers all have to be even more focused on the small details than before, because everything will be seen in detail.
This costume was first worn by Benedick Blythe as Phoebus in the 1997 made for television production of The Hunchback. It’s a well made and good looking costume - but the fine details are not nearly as apparent as they are in later productions. In 2006 it was seen again on Hans Matheson as Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex in The Virgin Queen, and in 2009 it appeared in the third season of The Tudors on Henry Cavill as Charles Brandon. In 2016 it was worn by Timothy Omundson as King Richard in Galavant. It was seen most recently in 2021 on Jedidiah Goodacre as Beckett Rush in Finding You.
