Cotoneaster atropurpureus and Dolichovespula maculata (bald-faced hornet)

It’s hard to believe from the tiny flowers of Cotoneaster atropurpureus but it’s a member of the rose family (Rosaceae). The flowers may be small but they’re powerful and when this plant turns on the charm, it swarms with pollinators -  including the occasional bald-faced hornet. Bald-faced hornets are omnivores and, in addition to eating flies, caterpillars and spiders, they’re more than happy to fill up on nectar if it’s available.

Photos taken in this set are of: 1. A beautiful Magpie in the sun out the back. 2. The seed heads of the flower bed area on the way to Lakeside including yarrow and wild carrot seed heads which looked stunning in the sun. 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9. Views on a lovely lunch time walk with elegant winter scenes of soft sunlight illuminating the bare branches, revealing mistletoe, with a small bit of autumnal colour still shining in the landscape which is the case at home too. 7. Turkey tail at Lakeside, striking and pretty fungi on wood. 10. A spider at home this evening.

Exhilarating views of eyecatching Green Woodpecker in the bowl area was a glorious birdwatching moment on the walk. The harsh cackle of Jay and gentle trickle of Wren greeted me nicely. Other highlights on the walk were a big Carrion Crow, Jackdaws, Magpie, Woodpigeon, Blackbird, Mallard, Coot and Great Crested Grebe. Wild carrot in flower still going strong along the northern path, teasel seed heads and cotoneaster, hawthorn and firethorn berries with their varied ruby shades were nice plants seen at Lakeside. Rose hips, Long-bodied Cellar Spider, Carrion Crow and Jackdaw on the roof out the back as well as the Magpie, Goldfinches, Collared Dove and Starlings were nice to see at home today.
