hi! you've really gotten me interested in the champion of the scarlet wolf, and im def buying it, but im wondering if i have to read lord of the white hell books before reading tcotsw? because it seems to be a standalone, but if its the kind of standalone that spoils what happens in the previous, related series (lord of the white hell), id rather read lotwh first. thanks in advance if u can help!
Ahh I'm so glad, my primary goal is to get more people reading Ginn Hale and especially this particular novel heheh *w*)))
Champion of the Scarlet Wolf (CotSW) can definitely be read as a standalone. HOWEVER: CotSW is the middle book in a trilogy (split into duologies) and the third book really won't make sense or resonate without having first read Lord of the White Hell (LotWH). (Honestly though, I always want to recommend skipping LotWH TwT;; Ginn Hale is my favorite author, hands down, no contest. But LotWH is the one and only book of hers that I'm not a big fan of, especially the first part/book.)
So, yes read LotWH first. I would just recommend keeping in mind that even though they share an overarching story and world, each duology has a very different tone and focus and follows different characters. So if you love one you might not love the other.

I wish I could remember how I initially felt about Elezar. Because in doing my reread this week all I could think when he showed up was how excited I was for his book. And when I was halfway through book two all I could think about was how close I was to Elezar and Skellan lol. As much as I love Javier and especially Kiram I second that CotSW is even better. 👀👀👀
I’ve only read CotSW once, I confess! It was on of those “so overwhelmingly good I didn’t have the strength to read it again lest it not be as amazing” but I’m finally gonna do it XD
That being said, because I’ve only read it once and read LotWH more, I definitely remember how much I disliked him XD
It makes me all the more excited to get on to his book, though, like you said!
I love LotWH for the setup and world-building (and I love a school romance XD), but CotSW somehow reminds me of Lord of the Rings? Return of the King specifically, for the huge battle. And I adore Skellan.
Also his and Elezar’s relationship was what drove me to write my own novel. Anyone who’s read Fellfire Summer and CotSW can definitely see I had just finished the latter when I created my characters lmao.

The thing I like the most about the Cadelonian Series (other than EVERYTHING) is how Ginn Hale managed to make the characters so human. They are all very complex, balancing good and bad qualities and navigating complex places of privilege and oppression that feel very real to me, and that makes her writing excellent in my opinion.
Breakdown of why I think she’s a genius below:
First we have Kiram, who is very obviously part of an oppressed minority in Cadeleon. He comes from a different culture and he knows he has to fight against every prejudice and institutionalized oppression. On the other hand, he is a bourgeois spoiled youngest son, who has very real material advantages in his society, and a large, supportive and loving family. He also did not have to struggle too much with his sexuality beyond figuring he had to support himself if he didn’t want to marry a rich woman, until he left for the academy. The academy is actually where we see him realize just how oppressive Cadeleonian society could be for a Haldiim Adari. Personality wise, he is also very complex: he is stubborn and demanding and thinks (knows) he’s smarter than others, but he’s also open and caring and generous. All of these are not just told, but shown to us in the books. In contrast, Javier is at the pinnacle of privilege, at first glance: handsome, rich and powerful, both politically and literally. However, he grew up isolated and lonely, knowing the society which granted him so much privilege would shun him and perhaps even kill him if he exposed his attraction to men. He is a showoff, spoiled and entitled, but he also takes his responsibilities very seriously and is very devoted to those he loves.
Elezar is possibly my favourite, because he is very aware of his privilege and his failings and he strives so hard to be a good man. He was traumatized when he was young and he had to hide a big part of himself out of not unreasonable fear. Like Javier, he balances his enormous privilege with the fact that he can’t ever be truly himself. He is prone to jealousy and rage, but still we can see he is a good brother and friend even on the first book. His unreasonable jealousy is not treated as something normal, but something he struggles with and overcomes, managing very healthy relationships, even with Javier. He is closed off but when it matters, his and Skellan’s conversations are very healthy and they have a great relationship. He is strong and often seen as a brute, but he’s smart and loyal and caring. Skellan is another complex and interesting character: he is undoubtedly powerful, but he grew up enslaved and later, impoverished. He balances great confidence with low self-esteem, which is very relatable to me, and a very human contradiction. He is insecure and not great at communication, but he’s also very caring and really smart, even if his brain works differently than most people’s.
All in all, Ginn Hale writes flawed, complex characters in a way that we can identify with, and when we see them overcome these flaws it doesn’t feel unreal or contrived, but like actual humans trying to be good people and find happiness, and the fact that they all find it at the end, even if not in a perfect way, means a lot to me!
