not sure who this lil (australian) guy is (harlequin beetle of some kind i think? black back with a lil patch of colour) but i was up a tree and saw a whole gaggle of him. he had the most beautiful vibrant red-to-yellow-to-blue belly. tried to capture it but this was the best i got. dont expect an ID but just thought he was neat!

Dindymus versicolor seems to match, although I’m not fully confident from those pictures. definitely a pyrrhocorid though

Some bugs no spiders just bugs. The cotton harlequin bugs are just gorgeous aren't they. Really nice for a stink bug, You see the male ones have that predominant blue and the females have orange, The ladybird is on my watering can lol too lol.

Cotton harlequin bugs grow to be about 2cm in length, with the males and females being different in colour - the females being mostly orange and the males mostly blue-red. They are also known as ‘stink bugs’ and are also commonly referred to as the Hibiscus harlequin bug.

“The Hibiscus Harlequin Bug (Tectocoris diophthalmus) sucks sap from hibiscus plants, bottle trees and related species,” says Trevor.

“Its main foodplant is the native Beach Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus). It is also a minor pest of cultivated cotton, a member of the hibiscus family Malvaceae, leading to its other common name, the Cotton Harlequin Bug.”

Favorite mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, and bug & explain why

favorite mammal: seals :) they just bring me such unbridled delight whenever i see them. so round

favorite bird: either the cassowary or the wedge-tailed eagle. cassowaries get a bad wrap and seeing one in the wild was one of the most amazing experiences of my life; wedge-tailed eagles are extremely impressive and take down mining drones

favorite reptile: snakes. obviously. particularly the bandy-bandy, it does this thing where it raises its contorted body into the air and that makes it very difficult for predators to grab it

favorite amphibian: sheep frogs (aka main's frogs). these used to come out after heavy rain where i grew up and it'd sound like a herd of sheep got loose

favorite fish: is an eel a fish? otherwise sturgeon cause my mum likes them

favorite bug: probably huntsman spiders cause they're friends and i enjoy their soothing presence. if you mean insects then it's cotton harlequin beetles

Pets for Habit

• Oh, Habit would love to have a few pets!! Definitely something fluffy but quiet. Loud noises give him quite a fright, so no dogs. Still wants something that likes to be cuddled though.

• He’d have a harlequin rabbit as a pet! No, TWO! He just can’t resist! He adores bummies :-D!!!! One is half brown and black, and the other is half white and black. The brown one is named Paprika, and the black one is named Pepper.

•The bunnies love to sit on his desk, and he’ll pet them while he works. Their fur is so soft and it helps relax him. Bunnies are quiet and stay out of your hair, but they can be affectionate too. That’s what he likes about them.

•He loves rabbit ears!!! They’re so big and floppy and soft! They make him giggle whenever he looks at them. Makes him wish he had bunny ears to wiggle and wave around. He adores how they hop around too!! When the bunnies play, he watches with wonder as they bound around the room and twitch their funny little noses. He could watch them for hours, honestly, they’re just such wonderful balls of cotton.

•He makes sure his flowers are out of reach from them!! He doesn’t want the bummies to feast on his beloved flowers! Or Pabit! They nibble on Pabit too sometimes, but other than that they’re well-trained enough to not tear the little puppet apart.

•He would also keep a frog!! A Budgett’s frog specifically! They’re so large and have teeny eyes! And such huge mouths!! One of his special interests is frogs. Frogs make him very happy. He named his frog Pancake, because well, the frog is flat like a pancake :-)!!!

• His froggy tank is up on his desk, so sometimes Pepper and Paprika get curious. He keeps a close eye on them, to make sure they don’t harass Pancake, but also to observe the aggressive behaviors of a Budgett’s frog. Did you know they’re very aggressive frogs that puff up when they feel threatened? Habit thinks they look so silly when they’re puffed, especially when they begin to screech! It sounds very funny and makes him laugh and kick his legs! The rabbits leave Pancake alone, but Pancake still puffs and screeches when they get too close. Sometimes they even bite their tank in an attempt to bite at the bummies, how rude!!

•Pancake is very calm around Habit. Sometimes they puff up when he nudges them around though. Habit usually brings a few the bugs from the flower bed back for the froggy to nibble on.

•It’s difficult for his mind to stay focused on his work. He’ll get distracted and end up staring at Pancake for 20 minutes, just laughing at how the frog looks when they move around on their teeny hands and stomp around the tank. Don’t even get me started on when Pancake puffs up. Habit is very easily amused, so you’ll hear plenty of jolly laughter from him when the froggy gets all puffy.
