Toulouse
On to the big city of Toulouse today. I spent a lot of time just walking the downtown area with all the shops and restaurants.
I went to the Cathedral, but nothing noteable there. It's actually not interesting and in pretty poor condition, so that would be easily skipped.
Tumblr media
A cafe with WiFi gave me an opportunity to catch up on posting the previous couple of days.
Then I decided that the Couvent des Jacobins sounded interesting. It's built in the same Southern Gothic style as the Cathedral in Albi and about the same age. From the outside the relationship is immediately obvious. The solid verticals, square instead of round, but still the same massive heavy construction.
Tumblr media
Then I went inside and was stunned. While every surface in Albi is covered with images, this is simple and stark. A single row of tall columns forms the center. Vault tracing springs from the columns to the walls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The columns are lit with colors from the stained glass windows. I realize that none of this conveys the quiet solitude of the space. Sounds echo quietly so there is a strange murmuring background noise that combines everything into almost a white noise.
It is one of my favorite spaces ever. It reminds me a little of St. Chapelle in Paris. Not as much glass and much larger but the same simplicity.
I'm sure in its 800 years it has looked differently at various times, but it's really a perfect space today. I thought about the cathedral built for masses of people and educating, inoculating in the church, and the convent built for people who were already dedicated to the church and needing a quiet place.
While the the cathedral separated the clergy from the masses behind a rood screen. Here the clergy were on one side of the row of columns and the public on the other side; little separation.
Thomas Aquinas is buried here. His relics are in a gold cask under the main altar in a design that is both simple and dramatic.
Tumblr media
The adjoining cloister is nice, but fairly ordinary.
Tumblr media
Then it was time to check into the hotel, take a shower and do some laundry. I'll be here three nights so things can get dry!
Along the way I passed this flower shop. The riot of flowers out front make it clear what they are selling and could easily leave you to think "I need more flowers at home."
Tumblr media
As I near the hotel I spotted a woman in a restaurant named Chez Jeannot eating a big bowl of mussels. So I went to Chez Jeannot for dinner: a half dozen oysters and a bowl of mussels with tiny clams, a glass of wine and one of Armagnac and it was a good end of the day.

Dino, 2018, by Bertrand Lavier. Another of the artist's "ready-destroyed" projects, a 1970s Dino 308 GT4 designed by Bertone which he recovered from a scrap yard. Once again I have seen posts claiming that Lavier himself crashed the car but this is not true. An important aspect of his "ready-destroyed" artistic practice is to find already destroyed items and repurpose them as artworks. Another aspect of the series is that the car was wrecked in a crash that did not cause any deaths or serious injuries. Exhibited for the first time during the "Debout !" ("Stand Up!") show at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes in 2018.

Yes, Robespierre doesn’t have anything named after him in Paris, and yes, there’s a metro station on the Parisian network, but it’s in the red suburb, in Montreuil
But we never talk about the fact that HE DID have a place in Paris named after him, althought for a very short time, between April 1946 and November 1950, back in the post WW2 times were socialists and communists were in “great” numbers in the Paris city council
The place they chose to rename “Place Robespierre” was the place du Marché Saint-Honoré, a very fitting choice cause it was where the Couvent des Jacobins stood until it was demolished in 1806. The Duplays’ home on the rue Saint-Honoré is 700m away (a 7 minutes walk), which was very convenient for Robespierre as a member of the Jacobin Club. The passage des Jacobins (see picture), built in 2002, is a nod to this past.

We could have had it all, we could be buying oranges place Robespierre!!!
Tumblr media
But who’s to say it can’t be the place Robespierre in our hearts? 🖤🖤🖤

Couvent Des Jacobins 2014 St Emilion Grand Cru Classe
Couvent des Jacobins 2014 is a St Emilion Grand Cru Classe, awarded by the Institut National des Appellations d’Origine (INAO ) in 1969.
Couvent des Jacobins is located in Rue Guadet in the heart of St Emilion in an old convent, the oldest parts which date back to 1389. The convent was established at one of the highest points of St Emilion by Dominican Friars who were bequested the land. The Friars produced wine at the site for almost four centuries until the brotherhood was dissolved just before the French Revolution. The estate was confiscated during the French Revolution and then sold as a national estate (“bien national”). Since 1790 and the early 20th century there were only been two owners of the the property: the Guadet and Vauthier families. The estate was purchased by Jean Jean in 1902 and remains in the same family. Today the estate is managed by Xavier Jean, the great-great-grand son of Jean Jean, assited by estaet manager Denis Pomarede. Organic certification was obtained from EOCERT in September 2020.
The vineyard covers some 10.7 hectares and is planted with three grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and, since 2010, Petit Verdot (first used in the 2014 vintage. There are four different terroirs the limestone plateau (right in front of Couvent des Jacobins); sandy-clay (mostly clay below 45 centimeters) with a fairly high share of limestone nodules (‘molasses du fronsadais’) ; sandy-clay (Southwest hill of Saint-Émilion); and clay and limestone (Northeast plateau, bordering the Asteries Plateau at the entrance of Saint-Émilion).
The grapes are harvested by hand into small containers known as “cagettes” and the grapes are sorted once in the vineyard and again after bunches have been destemmed. The grapes are vatted under gravity to maintain the integrity of the berries. The grapes are vinified in concrete vat apart from the Petit Verdot which is vinified separately in oak. After vinification, the wine is moved, again using gravity, into oak barrels. Around 50 to 55% of the barrels are new and the wine is aged for 12 to 15 months in the cellars prior to blending, resting and bottling. The best barrels are used for Couvent des Jacobins and the rest goes into a second wine called Menut des Jacobins.
The blend for Couvent des Jacobins is normally 75% to 85% Merlot, 15% to 25% Cabernet Franc and, since 2014, 2.5 to 7% Petit Verdot. Annual production is between 2,000 and 3,000 cases per vintage.
Couvent des Jacobins 2014 is a blend of 86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The wine is aged in 40% new oak and 60%  in second fil barrels for 12 months. French oaks from the forests of Allier, Tronçais and Bertranges, with a light fining.
