The Donald Trump hush money trial starts today in NYC.
Jury selection is the first order of business. In normal trials that may take a day or two. With Trump's legal foot-dragging, that could go into weeks.
There had been some doubts about Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's approach to this case. There is some new ground here. But Slate's Mark Joseph Stern, an attorney who initially had some reservations about the prosecution, is now "fully onboard" with it.
Over the past year, though, I have realized that my initial doubts about Bragg’s indictment were misplaced. It now seems clear that Trump’s New York trial, slated to begin this week, will be the former president’s only criminal trial before the November election. The other three strong indictments against him in other jurisdictions have unfortunately been delayed by a corrupt judge, a foot-dragging Supreme Court, and a district attorney’s questionable conduct in an already complex case. This, combined with Bragg’s excellent pretrial briefing, has substantially strengthened the case for this prosecution. It is important to American democracy that Trump be forced to defend at least some of his alleged criminal conduct before a jury of his peers in advance of Election Day. [ ... ] Shortly before the 2020 election, Trump wanted to kill a story about his alleged affair with Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress. So he allegedly directed his longtime fixer Michael Cohen to pay off Daniels, through a shell company, for her silence. Afterward, Trump funneled $420,000 to Cohen in installments. But he allegedly concealed the payments by listing them as legal expenses for a retainer that did not exist. Last year, I was uncertain whether this scheme, while sordid, rose to the level of a felony offense. I am now convinced that, if proved that he took these actions, it surely does. The falsification of business records is, by itself, a misdemeanor under New York law, but it’s a felony when it’s done with the “intent to commit another crime or to aid or conceal the commission thereof.” In his indictment, Bragg claims that Trump lied about the payments with the intent to violate election law, which is what elevates the crime to a felony. Initially, I was suspicious of this theory; what election law, exactly, was the former president attempting to violate? The district attorney’s initial statement of facts was hazy on this crucial point, raising the possibility that he couldn’t tie the underlying fraud to a state or federal statute. Turns out he could. Bragg has argued, convincingly, that the former president intended to violate at least two election laws—one state, one federal. First, Bragg asserted that Trump and Cohen ran afoul of the Federal Election Campaign Act by making unlawful campaign contributions (in the form of a payoff) at the direction of a candidate (that is, Trump).
As a criminal defendant, Trump has to be in court for the trial. And except for holidays, court will be in session four days a week.
So Trump will be in Lower Manhattan quite a bit for the next couple of months. The New York County (Manhattan) Courthouse is at 100 Centre Street. And he owns a major property at 40 Wall Street (modestly called The Trump Building) where he might occasionally be seen. Google Maps puts the walking distance between the two locations at 0.8 miles (1.28 km). So if you're tempted to exercise your First Amendment right to express your opinions to Trump...

The Serious Fraud Office has unexpectedly shut down its investigations into corruption at Rio Tinto and ENRC. The decision has shocked the business world, and left many wondering what could have prompted such a drastic move. Some fear that this may be the beginning of a cover-up, as the SFO has refused to provide any further information.

Life of a Spy
Chapter 1 Gift
An alarm started going in the small space of an apartment, an adult woman then reached her hand out from under the covers and grabbed her phone. She then turned the alarm off and looked at the time, it was 6:30 Am and the woman groaned as she wanted to sleep longer.
However she knew that she needed to get ready for the day as she had work that day. So begrudgingly the woman named Aura got out of her bed and went to the bathroom.
Her apartment was rather small with only three rooms and a hallway. The first room was her bedroom which doubled as the living room as there was a small couch and Tv in it as well. The next room was the kitchen where she would sit alone and eat her breakfast, which often was cheap cereal. The next part of the apartment was the hallway where in the middle of it was the door that led to the bathroom.
Aura started digging through her tiny closet and picked up the last clean outfit she had. Aura barely had much money to buy cleaning chemicals for her clothes so she used it as sparingly as possible. So she was going to do her laundry after she got back from work that day.
Aura sighed as she went to the kitchen to see how she was doing on food. When she opened the fridge, she saw that she only had an empty carton of eggs, and half a jug of milk.
"Ugh great now along with doing the laundry I also have to go and get more food. *Sigh* my life sucks, I wish I knew what I want to do with it." Aura said to herself as she closed the fridge and decided to pick up a cheap quick breakfast bagel on her way to work along with a coffee.
So she just went into the bathroom, got a quick shower, got ready for work, grabbed her car keys, and left the apartment. She then went down to the first floor of the apartment where the mail boxes were. Before leaving for work Aura always checked her mailbox to see if there was anything important in there.
Normally she'd just have ether ads or bills in there but when she opened her mailbox she saw a small package inside. She took the small brown box out and saw that there was a note tied to it.
Aura took the note and it read "For you my dear, I hope you like your present."
Aura noticed the handwriting to have been her mothers, she assumed that it must've been from three years ago as her mother died around that time. The Police told her that her mother was in a terrible accident and lost her life in it. Aura didn't ask for any details on the accident so she didn't know much about what happened. Aura then opened the box and saw a necklace with a silver chain and a heart shaped amethyst.
"Wow, this is so beautiful." Aura said and then put the necklace on.
"Hey Aura, how are you doing?" Aura heard someone ask.
She looked to her side and saw her apartment's landlord walking up to her.
"Oh I'm doing well, just tired as I worked late last night and I wanted to sleep in today." Aura explained.
"Same here, but like you I have work." The landlord explained.
"Yeah but on the plus side my annoyed deadbeat aunt hasn't showed up at my apartment to bug me about giving her money. Then to just have me slam the door in her face and either wait till she's gone or call the cops if she starts getting crazy." Aura explained.
"Yeah I hope it stays that way. It's giving the apartment a bad name every time a possible new tenant sees her being hauled away by the cops!" The landlord complained annoyed with Aura's aunt's constant interference in not just her nieces life but his business.
"Yeah well I gotta go get some breakfast and then head to work, so I'll see you around." Aura said then left the building.
(Later at Aura's workplace)
Aura was restocking some shelves in the local store that she worked in. She had a board look on her face as she's been working the same dead end job for almost three years now.
"Ugh how I wish I could figure out what I want to do with my life, but so far nothing's come to mind!" Aura said to herself.
"I know Aura this job sucks!" Aura heard someone say.
She looked over her shoulder and saw her coworker who also had a box of items in his arms.
"Yeah I just wish I knew what I wanted to do with my life, but I have no answers, unlike you. You're a college student working here to help your parents pay your tuition." Aura explained as she sat down the box and leaned against the shelf.
"Yeah but hey I'm sure you'll find something aside from working this crap job." Aura's college reassured her.
"Thanks but it's easier said than done, Pat ugh I wish my mom was here she'd help me out." Aura said sadly, as she fondly remembered her mother.
"Yeah... hey you wanna take a smoke break?" Pat asked.
"No thanks, you know I don't smoke." Aura explained.
"Okay then, more for me then." Pat said.
(Later that day)
Aura was finishing up the last of her work for her shift before she headed out to the dry cleaning.
"Hey Aura how have you been?" Aura heard someone ask.
She looked over and saw her boss standing not too far away from her. Aura and her boss weren't friends but they were on decent terms. Her boss did admire her hard work and dedication to her job even though Aura never told him she outright hated it.
"I'm doing alright, and my annoying aunt hasn't bothered me or caused a scene right outside of my apartment." Aura explained.
"That's good to hear and I hope she doesn't barge into the store again demanding you give her money and creating a whole scene in the store. Honestly she's a fully grown sixty year old woman and she's too lazy to get a goddamn job and demands that her niece gives her money when you need it more than her." Aura's boss was annoyed with how immature that woman was.
"Yeah I know, I just hope she stays away from me cause I'm sick and tired of her drama." Aura explained.
"Yeah me too... hey I was also wondering where did you get that necklace." Aura's boss asked while pointing at Aura's new necklace.
"Oh this, it was something I got in the mail today, I think it was meant to be a present from my mom before she passed away." Aura explained.
"Ah okay well it suits you well." Aura's boss explained.
"Thanks, now I gotta get going, I need to make a stop at the dry cleaner as what I'm wearing is the last clean outfit I have." Aura explained as she finished up what she was doing before getting ready to head out.
"Okay I hope to see you tomorrow Aura, you're a very hard worker." Aura's boss explained.
"Thanks, I'll see you again tomorrow as well." Aura explained before leaving the store and heading to her car.
After some time of driving Aura arrived at the drycleaners and parked her car in the parking space closest to the door. Aura then got out of her car and popped the trunk open. She then got out all of her dirty laundry, closed the trunk, and locked her car before heading inside. She then went inside and started loading up a washer with her laundry, added in the soap, and started it after paying.
As she waited for her laundry to be cleaned she decided to go into the cafe that was across the street from here. She then left the building and went up to the turn stop where she stood and waited for the crosswalk light to let her know she could cross the street. She looked up at it and the light on it told her she could cross the street.
So she started walking across the street, till she heard a car horn blare right next to her. She looked over and was horrified to see a sports car speeding right at her. She screamed in fear as the car made contact with her.
Aura then opened her eyes and was confused to see that she was still standing on the sidewalk. She then looked at the crosswalk light and saw that it was letting her know she could go. However Aura felt like she should wait a little longer.
Just then the same sports car flew past her going way above the speed limit. Then two or three cop cars went after the car in hot pursuit. Aura stood there in horror at what just happened, she was also very confused as she thought for a moment she was hit and now she was back on the sidewalk. She then saw the same kind of car zip past her along with several police cars.
"W-What the hell was that all about? Just a moment I was walking in the street, got hit by a car, and was back on the sidewalk? What the hell?" Aura asked herself.
"Um you know what, I had a long day at work, I might be tired and hungry. I'll just go and get something to eat, finish my laundry, get some groceries from the store, and head home to rest." Aura said to herself as she walked over to the cafe.
She went in and ordered an espresso, with two pumps of chocolate sauce, marshmallow sauce, and some cream. She also ordered a strawberry jam filled donut, and a white powdered sugar donut.
"Okay I'll have those out for you in a sec miss." The barista said, sounding rather bored.
She knew how he felt as she's also currently working a dead end job that she hated, but needed as it allowed her to have food and shelter. Aura just stood there and waited for the barista to make her drink, she was still shaken and confused by what had happened not too long ago.
Then a man then walked into the shop and then pulled out a gun. Aura got scared along with the barista and the two put their hands up.
The guy then screamed "GIVE ME ALL THE MONEY IN THE CASH REGISTER OR YOU BOTH WILL DIE!"
Aura got so scared as she didn't know what to do right then and there. The man then pointed the gun at her and pulled the trigger, Aura screamed in pain as the bullet hit her.
Aura then opened her eyes again and once again saw that everything was back to the way it was before. Aura felt her heart start to race as she thought she was in a situation where she died but saw everything was back to normal. She then looked to the entrance and once again saw the same man entering the store.
Aura looked into his pocket and felt her heart stop as she saw a gun sticking out of his pocket. Thinking fast, Aura ran up to the man and put him in a headlock. The barista looked over hearing the commotion and saw Aura wrestling the man to the ground while holding him in a headlock.
"W-what THE FUCK!" The barista exclaimed, confused and scared.
"CALL THE POLICE HE HAS A GUN!" Aura explained in the struggle.
The Barista then dropped the coffee he was making for Aura and ran into the back to get the cops. After about five minutes the police arrived and the guy was arrested. Aura felt relieved but still very confused about what was going on.
"Hey Miss, thanks for the help." An officer said.
"Oh no need to thank me." Aura said.
"But there is, this guy is very dangerous, he's robbed about twenty cafe's like this and killed about the people and badly injured five more." The officer explained.
"W-wait really? Oh god then we were in serious danger!" Aura exclaimed, scared at what she just learned.
"Yeah but thanks again for what you did. Let me pay for what you ordered here as a thankyou." The Officer said.
"Um, that's not necessary." Aura said.
"Please I insist one of those victims was my nephew, he's alive thank god but I wanted this man behind bars after that. So please let me do this as a thank you for what you did." The officer said.
When Aura heard that she decided to let the officer pay for what she ordered. Later the man was taken away and Aura left with her coffee and donuts, she went back to the dry cleaner. After her clothes were done she packed them back in her car and just decided to go back home.
Aura was way to freaked out by everything that just happened to go to the store. That and she was rather exhausted from the day's labor, so she just drove straight home and decided to go grocery shopping tomorrow.
"Oh god, what happened to me? What was all that about? First it was the car, then the gun guy? What is happening to me?" Aura asked, so confused.
(Later)
Aura was in her apartment watching Tv while folding her laundry, she was still confused and freaked out about what happened to her that day. However she didn't know if she could say anything to anyone as she would most likely sound crazy.
Just then she heard the doorbell ring, curious Aura got up to see who it was. She felt tense however as she felt like it was most likely her deadbeat aunt coming here once again to cause a scene demanding for money. However when she opened the door all she saw was a man standing on the other side of the door holding a box in his hands.
"Hello I'm Toby and I'm your new upstairs neighbor." Toby explained.
"Oh hello I'm Aura, nice to meet you." Aura said kindly.
"Aura, that's a lovely name, it fits for such a lovely lady." Toby said.
Aura blushed a bit as she hasn't been called pretty by someone in a long time after her mother passed.
"Um t-thanks, that's very kind of you." Aura said.
"Oh and here I made some Samoas so I hope you like them." Toby said.
"Oh thanks, I love these, I hope to see you around again Toby." Aura said while taking the box.
"Me to... oh where did you get that necklace?" Toby asked.
"Oh this? It was delivered to me this morning. It was meant to be a gift to me by my mom, who passed away in an accident three years ago." Aura explained.
"Ah I'm sorry for your loss, but that amulet is very lovely, the color especially brings out your eyes." Toby explained.
"Aww thanks Toby, I hope to see you again soon." Aura said.
Toby smiled then left and went back to his apartment right above Aura's. Aura smiled and went back inside to finish folding her laundry and rest up till she had to go to bed.
(Meanwhile with Toby)
Toby closed and locked his apartment door to make sure that no one would come in. He then closed all of the curtains and then opened his laptop up and started a video call.
"Hey Agent Carolus , any news on the target?" A man asked.
"Yes it turns out that fat old hand was lying to us when she said she had the amulet, her niece, named Aura has it." Toby, whose real name was Carolus, explained.
"Ah I see, so what should we do about her then?" The man asked.
"Aura's aunt? Get rid of her she knows too much, but make it look like an accident like we did with Aura's mother, agent Harmony." Carolus explained.
"Understood sir, would you like to watch her meet her demise for lying to us?" The man asked.
"Yes I would like to watch her meet her demise." Carolus explained.
The man nodded and changed the view of the camera to face a woman in her sixties tied up to a chain with a gag over her mouth. She looked like she was beaten to a pulp and had blood dripping down her body. The man then went up to the woman and pulled the gag off her mouth, she then looked up at him with fear and fury in her eyes.
"P-please just let me go I won't say anything to anyone I swear!" The woman pleaded.
"Sorry but this would've never happened if you didn't lie to us about having the amulet." The Man explained.
"Well I should have had it! IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MINE IT WOULD HAVE MADE ME RICH! RICH I TELL YOU! I SHOULD'VE HAD IT NOT MY WORTHLESS NIECE!" The woman screamed angrily.
The man then hit the woman hard on the side of her head with a gun barrel causing more blood to come out.
"And you should've been more honest with us, don't you know the saying, lies always come to light, and if you didn't lie to us we would've never had to do this. However you decided to say you had the amulet and even had the audacity to make a fake copy of it. For this we can't allow you to live, you know too much and it's not like your niece will miss you as you caused her nothing but problems." The man said.
He then took out a syringe that had a red liquid in it and injected it into the woman's arm.
"W-What did you do to me?" The woman asked.
"Nothing much just injected a lethal drug into you and it'll kill you within five minutes at best." The man explained.
"W-what NO! PLEASE DON'T DO THIS TO ME! I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE!" The woman screamed in a panic.
She keeps on screaming for another five minutes till she starts foaming at the mouth and falls to the ground dead.
"Ahh it never ceases to satisfy me to take out the trash." Carolus said.
"Yes sir, same with me, so what's the plan now?" The man asked.
"Well now she has the amulet it'll be hard to get it so we'll play it safe and smooth and wait for the right time to strike." Carolus explained.
"Alright sir, let me know when you're ready for us to strike." The man said.
The two men then ended the call and Carolus looked down at his floor which was where Aura was right underneath.
"Oh aura you poor poor soul, I wish such a lovely lady like you didn't have such a sacred treasure around your neck. I almost feel bad about having to steal it and get you out of the way to keep our operations under wraps. However I'm sure they'll be someone out there who would pay big bucks for such a lovely body like yours." Carolus said with a seductive smile on his face as he started planning on his next actions.

Russia has been trying to cover up the extent of the disaster of the sinking of the Moskva – Putin’s lost flagship in the Black Sea.
Not long after the sinking, the Kremlin released a photo of some members of the ship’s crew safe and on land. But some investigating revealed that this photo come from a vid recorded before the ship’s sinking.
The photograph sent to RFE/RL’s Siberia.Realities by an aunt of one of the sailors on board, Sergei Grudinin, 21, is some of the strongest evidence suggesting that the video is not what the Russian military made it out to be, but rather footage shot at some point before the sinking. Looking identical to parts of the video, it shows Grudinin standing, chin up, in a row of sailors in dark uniforms and caps. A total of about 10 men are in the frame.
[ ... ]
Grudinin was a conscript, meaning that, by law, he was not supposed to be sent into a combat zone. While Russia is fighting a war against Ukraine, with some of the fighting occurring along Ukraine’s Black Sea and Sea of Azov shores, the Defense Ministry has claimed that the ship was not involved in a combat operation.
Overall, the Moskva was a disaster waiting to happen.
This is a leaked report on the readiness status of Moskva as of February 10, 2022.
Russia doesn’t just try to hide its disasters in Putin’s war, it apparently is also making up victories.
The Russians Got Caught Faking A TB-2 Drone Shoot-Down
Most recently, Russian forces apparently tried to create the impression they’ve shot down more of Ukraine’s TB-2s than they actually have, by staging old drone wreckage in a very sloppy mimicry of a recent crash.
The Russians have downed at least six of the slow-flying TB-2s that independent analysts can confirm. On Thursday they tried to assert an additional shoot-down—one that never actually happened. Purveyors of so-called “open-source intelligence” quickly revealed the fraud.
Russia has little to show for its invasion apart from genocide in Kyiv’s western suburbs, newly radioactive troops camping at Chernobyl, and looted washing machines and women’s underwear from Ukrainian homes and businesses.
