In his 2018 interview with Dan Rather, Robert talked about his voice issues. After years of abusing his vocal cords with smoking and singing high notes without warming up, a doctor told him that in six months his voice wouldn't be able to show signs of surprise. "He said, it's over. That was 28 years ago."
So the death penalty on his singing (and even talking) ability was received in 1990. He was touring Manic Nirvana in that year and the tour ended in January 1991. Then he was out of public view for a total of 2 years, longest break since Zeppelin started. He returned to record Fate of Nations in late 1992, the album was out in May 1993.
So in these two years he was fighting to get his voice back, desperately praying not to lose the one and only career of his life. He got it back miraculously, in the wake of... well, Coverdale/Page album and tour announcement. The album was out in March 1993 and Robert responded with Calling To You, leaving the critics wondering why the hell he threw the line "Oh Jimmy!" in. (Seriously, people? You can't tell?)
So think about this: Robert was in distress and on the edge of losing his biggest fulfilment in life. Then here he saw David, who had youth and pretty face and stage charisma and undamaged powerful voice and mostly importantly, had Jimmy. I would lose my fucking mind, lol. No wonder he enthusiastically dived into the melodrama with zero sense of embarrassment. This poor lad was immensely jealous and so so scared that he was losing his shit.
And perfect timing Jimmy, perfect, you're a true magician. "Creative way to bring him back to me", this was damn creative it entertained me to no end.

'Labyrinths (Libraries)' (2022-ongoing) is a set of images resembling maps of spaces produced out of tight #grids. These are are spaces that are highly organised, with very little room for any form of #improvisation. Horizontal and vertical lines dominate the surfaces of these paintings, forming #pathways that are navigated in one's mind but not break out of. Within every #library, we can locate books which contain many opposing ideas. These #paintings think about multiplicity and the relations between these books and the spaces between them as a landscape of our contemporary time. The visual language within each painting found in 'Labyrinths (Libraries)' is a constant oscillation between positive and negative spaces; sparking an interest in thinking about how ideas can be easily veiled and hidden behind other ideas. 'Cover (Versions)' (2009-ongoing) is an on-going series of #bookcovers imagined as paintings. The selected titles are taken from an extensive and #idiosyncratic list that is constantly expanding via #recommendations sent to him by his friends. Most of these books have never been #read at the time the painting is produced, but is to be read at some point in his life. Each painting is improvised; there has never been an assumption of how the painting might look. Chong discursively exhausts two sets of parallel vocabularies found in painting and graphic design.
