summer reminder that if you're heat intolerant or dealing with heat illness, it is okay to take off your mask, if you have to.
it is not your fault that the people around you refuse to wear their mask to protect you, themselves, and others. you are allowed to prioritze protecting yourself from heat illness, especially since heat stroke can kill you... much faster than COVID.
it's not fair at all that you'd have to expose yourself & others to the risk of a COVID infection even more. but it is not your fault. the people around us and the systems that governs us have failed. yet, you're still doing the best you can to be COVID conscious while still taking care of yourself.
that's all you can do. let the guilt go, and don't die from heat stroke. and for anyone who doesn't wear their mask when they can do so safely*: stop being neglectful and mask the fuck up.
*safely as in without distress or illness

Here’s a giant full page comic I made for the newspaper during the beginning of the pandemic! Unfortunately, it required so much overtime that I barely made the deadline. 🥲
I tried my best to capture Sibling Dynamics™️. Let me know if I succeeded!

ID (also in Alt Text): clipboard holding a print out of a multi layer reusable mask pattern (with a pocket for adding more protection!) on top of the pattern is a patchwork mass of fabric covering the mask shape.
Tumblr media
Craft posting pt two !! I'm making a reusable mask (w/ pocket to put in Better Masks and things that work to protect better than plain fabric (bc. You Know,,, That's Not Enough.) bc I'm running out of disposables and have no money to buy more :') and I go to a. College campus every day and them thangs is POPULATED
So yeah! I scavenged these fabric bits from around the school and I think I have enough to make two or three, which will be Extremely helpful for when I'm low on spoons or forget to wash them the night before (which is all the time, also I don't have a dryer so if I forget, washing in the morning isn't an option) :') but! It's worth it to me to keep masking! It makes me feel safe, I prefer to conceal my face, and I love knowing I'm doing my part the best I can to protect others and myself!
This is the pattern I'm using! If you're interested but don't have a printer hmu and send me a tip over $app or Ven (name in my bio) and I'll print it out for you and mail it :)

Where's the best place to get reusable face masks with vents/filters? I've been using disposables for a while, but I'd like to try out reusables to see if I like them more. I'd prefer to purchase from small businesses if possible, so if anyone has suggestions that would be fantastic!

i would like to talk about masking. if you haven’t been masking for a while, it’s never too late to start again if you’re physically able to. mask whenever you’re in public places, especially when indoors or around large groups of people.
mask types: whatever you can access/afford is better than nothing! cloth and surgical masks are not great. kn95s and n95s are better. there are also masks with clear faces and reusable respirators made of other materials if those better fit your needs.
fit & seal: different faces need different masks! an effective mask will fully cover your nose and mouth, and create a tight seal around your face. you can check the seal by doing a seal test to ensure there is no air leakage around the sides of the mask. (you might have to try a few different masks before finding the one that fits you best.) masks with earloops can create leakage, so try to use masks with straps that go around your head. trifold masks have been tested to work better when taking jaw movement into account, as movement can disrupt a fit/seal.
wear/reuse: you can reuse masks, but try to rotate them on a weekly basis. try to touch the outside of the mask as little as possible & treat the surface as if it is contaminated. if the surface of the mask is dirty or wearing down, it’s best to replace it. to reduce wear, masks can be loosely stored in a paper bag.
two-way masking: is more effective than one-way masking. the best protection is having as many people as possible masked. ask and encourage people in your life to mask regularly. one-way masking is still worth it especially if you have a good mask!!
indoor masking: being in crowded areas is risky even with a mask, especially with repeated exposure, especially when there is little ventilation or airflow. it is also risky to take off your mask even briefly for something like eating or drinking, so be cautious. take your mask off sparingly or not at all.
covid is airborne. covid travels through the air like smoke. it lingers in the air for a few hours even in empty rooms. covid can be transmitted outdoors. masking works best in cooperation with other precautions, like ventilation and social distancing. please wear a mask consistently, especially in places like doctors’ offices, pharmacies, grocery stores, and public transit. take care of yourself and your community members!

Ngl I kinda enjoyed the period of time when everyone was still wearing face masks in public. Everyone looked so much hotter lmao
Bonus: I could make the most unhinged faces at customers and they never knew. Ugh I miss it 😩

what are the best masks to use?
ive recently moved to new york from texas for school, and, while it was very unsafe to mask in my area of texas, i feel that here in ny i can safely go back to masking as i have wanted to do for years at this point. the trouble is, since its been so long, im no longer up to date on the best masks. i know cloth masks are essentially useless, and that n95s (i think) are considered to be pretty good, but im not sure what the accuracy of this is or where i should be getting them. also, are there reusable masks that are safe/good/reliable? i feel so wasteful throwing away disposables at the end of every day, but im not sure if there are alternatives.
any help that could be given would be amazing, i know that masking is the right thing to do, im just kind of overwhelmed as to where to start
thank you!

i really appreciate your positivity post about those of us who can't wear masks outside in the heat. i don't know if i have anything diagnosable but i'm definitely disabled nonetheless in such a way that i can't stand outside very long without getting extremely tired/dizzy/sick/miserable/etc. and i feel like i'm very prone to heat stroke due to how physically weak i am by default, especially since my climate is so fucking hot & humid and probably one of the worst such places in the whole country (i'd imagine at least?). it certainly doesn't help that the masks we have that aren't the classic N95s are all... black and absorb the sunlight lol. i know a lot of karens complain that they can't breathe when they have to go shopping for 20 minutes that way and it's pathetic to us but i legitimately feel trapped, panicked, and overheated when i can't breathe freely. it's overwhelming for sure!
yw!! I've been being kinder to myself about it and I still have some anxiety over it, but I wanted to share cuz like. we're the last people who should be beating ourselves up. we cant control that our bodies dont do well in heat, and we shouldnt be risking immediate serious illness or death. and we shouldnt feel ashamed because some comparatively abled people whined and are still whining about masks.
so yeah. i hope you're able to stay cool and safe this summer ♡ and its comforting to know im not alone

"There's no excuse for not wearing a mask! It doesn't make it harder to breathe!"
It doesn't make it harder for non-disabled people to breathe. Me, on the other hand, can't have my mouth or nose covered by anything. My glasses can't even push down on my nose or I struggle to breathe.
Don't use fighting ableism as an excuse to be ableist.
