This is the 30th portrait in a series I've started to memorialize lives lost to covid. This is Gregory Allan Leigh. Gregory passed away from covid in September of 2020. He was a mechanic from Southaven MS. Gregory was a loving husband, father, brother, son, nephew and uncle. His sister described him as funny, a prankster, loyal, and sarcastic. Greg enjoyed playing the drums, fostering pit bulls with this wife, and spending time with his wife and daughter. He was a father figure and friend, and was the glue that held his family together. Look closely to learn more about Gregory and the many reasons he was special ❤️ Project information: I am finishing up a series of portraits to memorialize lives lost to covid. I am no longer taking submissions for portraits. Portraits are drawn entirely with text (provided by families) describing who they were and the many reasons they were special. So many families were unable to grieve together or even hold funerals for their loved ones due to this awful pandemic. Participants in this project are offered the opportunity to come together to provide text, photos, and handwritten notes to be included in these collaborative word portraits. The hope is to help families through loss with art. The idea is to address the humanity behind the statistics. So many of us just see a staggering number of deaths, and don't entirely equate them with actual people. Yesterday was WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY! If you didn’t know... well, now you do now. As most of you know, mental health awareness is something really close to my heart. In the past I haven’t been great at looking after my own mental health, but this year I am taking time and putting in the work to nurture my inner resilience. Yesterday, I spent doing the things that make me feel good. I doodled and I got into the outdoors with family. Yes, we absolutely have to remain sensible and weary. WEAR YOUR MASKS, (if you can), WASH YOUR HANDS, DON’T CONGREGATE IN DOORS.... but please also don’t wall yourself in completely; physically or, (and perhaps especially) emotionally . As humans we are social creatures. Even the introverts need some interaction. It is how we grow. It is how we learn. It is how we evolve. Be sensible and be safe, but take walks in open areas with people in your support system, (especially if you need help to access nature), phone calls and video calls with loved ones, taking time away from a screen and investing in a hobby or activity that is grounded in reality. Everyone is struggling right now. The pandemic has shown us how important it is to look after ourself; to nurture kindness to ourselves and others; to give children and young adults the tools they need to regulate their emotions. If you are struggling or if anyone you know is struggling remember to check in. You will be okay. The brighter skies will come. Stay happy, stay humble, stay hopeful. I love you tribe. Community is essential to me. One of the main reasons I wanted to live in Ravenswood and not downtown was because I wanted to know the local people who work in my neighborhood.

Spoken is a little cafe that is a surprisingly big part of my life. I go here most days for breakfast, and the couple who run it, Will and Sido, are people that I consider friends. So much so that when we had our wedding in 2018, having them cater it was a no-brainer. They’re big supporters of progressive values and community. I can’t imagine our neighborhood without them.

When the pandemic hit, they briefly hit ‘pause’ and have recently re-opened with a to-go window and are now offering groceries. I’m happy to see a business I love dearly find a way to make it work in this weird world we’re living in.

In honor of 2020 Seniors, I’m joining the trend to post my Senior photos! • • I really wanted to just be myself during these photos. I felt so awkward and out of place but Cash, my photographer, just let me play with the environment and be myself. It was amazing and I loved every moment of it. • I still remember this time in my life. My mom and I got into an argument of whether I should do PSEO and I cried to her, “I just want to experience what high school is like, it’s my Senior year.” and we never talked about PSEO again. To this day, I don’t regret that decision, holding out on my college degree to create the memories I did with my friends and graduating class. Graduating and leaving everything behind was the hardest thing I ever did and I’m so sorry to the Seniors who will never get that opportunity back. There will always be things you want to go back and redo (like my prom, other than eating ice cream with my best friend, brenda) or finding the courage to finally admit I had feelings for a boy and risking our entire friendship for it. None of what I want to go back and redo will ever compare to what the Class of 2020 will have to go through. We all anticipated the perfect vision memes and the blazing memes - the cringey or uplifting Senior speech that would have made us laugh and cry. I’m so sorry that this Pandemics robbed you all of your own amazing stories, your moment to walk across that stage, and all I can hope is that we all make it through this and the loss we feel after isn’t as great as our loss we felt during.
