I've been thinking about this for a bit and i think it's hilarious.

So sandy doesn't talk, he uses images that he created using his sand and we know that a lot of the time the others don't really get what he's trying to say. Now sky kids don't speak in the same way either; body language and reactions are their forte.

Now imagine sandy meeting the skykids and having an in depth conversation when they realize that they actually communicate with each other well. He is their size, but he has so many more ways of communicating and then the others are half convinced that he is a veteran of some kind lol.

During the crossover, Pearl was kind of being a bit reclusive and her base was her main project that basically caused it.

So when Gem sent both Lizzie and Cleo a message to meet her at spawn, they both kind of panicked because they hadn't seen Pearl in like 2 weeks and we're understandably nervous. Cue a walk into the nether and then exiting into Gems base, she just smiles, leads them up to the library and it's windows.

She pulls back the curtains and says look at what Pearl did, and their jaws drop. They take it all in and then explore her base until they find her up in her mushroom, dead asleep with her head in her arms, sitting at her desk which is just full of plans.

They end up carrying her to bed and snuggle up with her with fond looks in their eyes and gentle hands softly running across her arms and face and hair.
