Some of the features I’m looking forward to are the wide range of customization options for my character and house, befriending the animal villagers, and exploring the sky island biomes!

Redd is actually a super fun NPC. Like, you could write a whole damn book or movie and I’m sure he’d have a nice backstory to why he’s such a hilarious, somewhat charismatic, sketchy little jerk.

Disability Representation in Unpacking
Unpacking is a cozy puzzle game (available on PC/Switch/Xbox) wherein you learn about the characters solely based on their possessions through a series of moves throughout their life.
I've seen a lot of folks talking about how much they love the representation of various identities throughout the game that can be clearly seen despite our knowledge of the character being solely based on their possessions.
What I haven't seen much discussion about are the ways that disability is represented throughout the game.
[Unpacking Spoilers Below the Cut]
Tumblr media
2004
Tumblr media
The earliest point that we start seeing hints that our character may have of some sort of chronic illness or disability is in the second stage when we move into an apartment for University. Here we have two items:
First Aid Kit
While this is not strictly indicative of a disability or chronic illness, I can tell you that as the disabled friend/roommate I was the only one around with first aid supplies from basically ages 18-24.
Jar Grip
I've seen some people refer to this item as a can opener but in my opinion it far more closely resembles an adaptive jar grip than a traditional can opener (particularly when compared to the can openers seen in 2004 & 2010).
2007
Tumblr media
In stage 3 of the game one item is added:
First Aid Kit
Jar Grip
Medication
This blue box of tablets shows up in this stage and is carried through the remainder of the game. Whether prescription or OTC the continuation of the medication's inclusion over the next 10+ years of their life indicates it's importance to the character.
2010
Tumblr media
In stage 4 the same three items seen in stage 1 & 2 remain:
First Aid Kit
Jar Grip
Medication
2012
Tumblr media
In stage 5 when the character returns to their childhood home several items are added that are indicative of chronic pain management while one item (the jar grip) is left behind:
First Aid Kit
Medication (New Addition)
A new box of tablets (green) is added in this stage and as with the blue box of tablets it remains with the character through the rest of the game.
Heat Patches
A box of stick-on heat patches is added in this stage which remains with the character through the rest of the game. This item (along with others added at this stage) is indicative to me of chronic pain management.
Tiger Balm
A small jar that looks extremely similar to Tiger Balm (an analgesic/heating ointment) is added in this stage and it remains with the character through the remainder of the game. This item (along with others added at this stage) is indicative to me of chronic pain management.
Hot Water Bottle
A hot water bottle is added in this stage which stays with the character through the rest of the game. This item (along with others added at this stage) is indicative to me of chronic pain management.
2013
Tumblr media
In stage 6 the items from the previous stage remain with some additions (including the first mobility aid!):
First Aid Kit
Medication (New Additions)
Another box of tablets (dark blue) is added in this stage which remains with the character through the rest of the game.
Additionally, a bottle of supplements (presumably vitamin D) is added which also remains with the character through the rest of the game.
Heat Patches
Tiger Balm
Hot Water Bottle
Cane
In this stage we see a mobility aid for our character for the first time with their cane included in their living room. While this item may be the first one people would consider to be explicitly indicative of some sort of mobility impairment/disability it also serves to further solidify items seen in previous stages as other disability aids.
2015
Tumblr media
In stage 7 the same items seen in stage 6 remain.
First Aid Kit
Medication
Heat Patches
Tiger Balm
Hot Water Bottle
Cane
2018
Tumblr media
In stage 8 most of the items (minus the first aid kit - presumably eliminated with the addition of the medicine cabinet) from stages 6&7 remain with a couple of additions:
Medication (New Additions)
Two new bottles of what appear to be prescription medications are added in this final stage.
Heat Patches
Tiger Balm
Hot Water Bottle
Cane
Wrist Brace
Here we see the second explicit mobility aid for our character with a wrist brace included among their illustration/drawing supplies.
Overall Thoughts
I absolutely loved the unpacking gameplay from the start. For me it has just the right amount of problem solving & organization to let me really focus on the game without getting overly stressed or frustrated at the limitations imposed by the game. Being surprised by a disabled main character in a game I was already enjoying is a major plus.
It is so refreshing to see disability represented in such a simple & accurate way in a game. My disabled friends and I always joke about how much "medical junk" takes over our spaces and having that show up in a game so explicitly was a huge moment of feeling seen for me in a way that games so often fall short.
