🚨 It's that time of year again! Please remember to keep spoilers out of inboxes and behind a "KEEP READING" cut!
What's a spoiler? Any info about an episode that hasn't aired yet.
What's not a spoiler? Anything that's been officially released. Promo photos, episode titles, stuff like that. Although some people don't want to see those either, so please tag your posts with what's in them! (eg. #spoilers #promo pics #episode description etc.) That way people can filter out tags they want to hide.
Us spoilerphobes will truly appreciate it. And we'll never get to thank you because we won't see your posts. So THANK YOU if you did this this last season, and THANK YOU if you do it now!

It feels like CPD is ignoring a lot of their past seasons to try and make season 10 work. Now that Burzek is back together, they are trying to say Kim has always felt the same way about Adam. No! This isn't even an anti thing, that's just not the truth. I get they needed a ship this year, but they could have just said she saw Adam in a different light now that he is a dad and he was there for her recovery. We all saw seasons 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. She was clear she didn't want a relationship with him. So now Burzek is this couple that has always felt the same way about each other and Upstead is falling apart, even though they have always been steady? I get it. Jay is gone and Burzek was bound to get back together, but they shouldn't have to revise past seasons to make it work.
Nothing further, your honor.

just started rewatching CPD (s8) and I cannot believe I haven’t seen this show for over 6 months. my babies 🥺 I missed them and I missed Jay’s smirk for his (future) wife 💗
p.s. this tumblr account pretends that season 10 never existed and will continue to do so until Upstead is reunited

Has no one on PD really had a good exit?
Not really, some exits I guess you could label as neutral, but no I wouldn’t call any of them good. At least not if we’re using good as a synonym for happy. Let’s break it down (including some major recurring guests).
Julie Willhite (season 1): Line of Duty Death
Mia Sumner (season 1): forcibly transferred, IAD mole
Sheldon Jin (season 1): Murdered
Nadia DeCotis (season 2): Murdered
Sean Roman (season 3): Injured Out, and didn’t think they'd be able to hack being a desk cop
Justin Voight (season 3): Murdered
Mouse Gerwitz (season 4): Returned to Army/failure to re-assimilate to civilian life
Antonio Dawson PT 1 (season 4): Transferred own volition (so it could have been seen as a good/happy one if Chicago Justice hadn’t been canceled)
Erin Lindsay (season 4): Transferred to FBI, but would have been fired from CPD if stayed and her mother would have gone to jail, so not much choice.
Alvin Olinsky (season 5): Murdered
Antonio Dawson PT 2 (season 6/7): Drug addiction, moved to Puerto Rico to be near his sister
Vanessa Rojas (season 7/8): Unknown. You can assume happy if you want, but there's no evidence of that.
Jay Halstead (season 10): Rejoined army in some capacity, felt as though needed to leave as he was losing himself
Now, this isn’t to say that the other shows don’t have their share of “bad” exits, either. Fire has had plenty of deaths, injured-out's and fired's. So has Med, who has also had more neutral exits. But they both also have happier wrap-ups interspersed though all that as well. PD really doesn’t.

No pressure asking about that meta for Jay's exit and the song "She Calls Me Back" because I love your metas and I'm going to be trying to start the show on peacock this month!
First of all, I am thrilled for you to start CPD. Please message me with all of your thoughts. And, of course, when you get to the love of my life, Mouse. Seriously, I am here for all yelling and thoughts and babbles at all times. Unfortunately, I'm attached to this show and all of its characters - yes, even the ones I don't like. It's less that Voight has grown on me and more like... I can't wait to see how his story ends? Whether that means the end of the show or if he gets written out sooner than that. He fascinates me, but that's a different meta.
Jay's exit, though...
I have a lot of thoughts about Jay's exit in general, though I think my overall opinion of it seems to be unpopular? I loved 10x03 and the exit that Jay got, and all of the little details of it, and, because I'm me, how well it ties into how Mouse was written out six years ago. I don't agree with the general consensus that the episode was "bad" or that Jay was "out of character" or any of that. It was an hour of television that I genuinely really enjoyed, so I'll talk it up and praise it with every breath I take because oh my god.
(under the cut for babbles)
Look, I will admit that hearing about Jesse leaving the show worried me at first. They've been playing up the idea of Jay taking over Intelligence one day since season 6, I even had a theory about how Jay was going to become a sergeant and take over the team from Voight over the course of season 10 that I really did believe in. And then we got that headline, and it hurt. It was taking away this storyline I really, really wanted to see, and it was upsetting. But I came to terms with it, and that hurt didn't ruin my enjoyment of the episode by the time it aired, if that makes sense? And then the way they did it... wasn't a disservice to that idea they've been playing up for so long.
And the way they did it, which I still love so much, for every reason - wonderfully in character for Jay, the callbacks to Mouse (probably not intentional but I loved them anyway), the open ending so he can come back - really does consume my every waking thought. Kit and Cíara have heard a lot about my thoughts, however incoherent they might be at times, and however much my thoughts are just... Noah Kahan lyrics.
Because so much of my thoughts on this are just the bridge of She Calls Me Back on a loop. That kind of... stepping back from the what's expected, which was staying in Intelligence and eventually leading the team in a post-Voight era, and stepping into something familiar, which was going back to the army and kind of... marrying these two lives he's led. Jay is off in Bolivia, now, taking down cartels and stopping drugs from even hitting the streets in the first place. he's still Jay, trying to make the world a better place and doing things by the book, instead of changing himself to become Voight because he thinks he needs to take over one day.
Really, that's what was happening. A lot of season 9 was him (and Hailey) getting dragged into Voight's nonsense - covering up deaths, committing more felonies and covering those up, the things that Voight's been doing for the last decade plus that Jay has been trying to stop him from doing since the first season. I really appreciate that Jay's exit involved him looking at that path he was on, saying "I don't want to be this," and turning himself onto a different path that he actually wants to be on, you know? I love the autonomy that gives him, as a character? He saw this life he didn't like and found a way to stop living it, and I'm incredibly proud of him for that.
And the final scene he had with Hailey doesn't make me doubt their marriage or their love or their future at all. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Jay will take this time to himself, get through his eight months in Bolivia, and when he's back in Chicago he'll keep that autonomy that the narrative gave him, and he'll continue on a path that he wants to be in, instead of falling back into the path that he was kind of... put on? Because Voight told him he would take over one day, it wasn't like anyone asked Jay if he wanted that. It was just expected to happen. And I don't remember if it was a deleted scene or not (because I binged 4 seasons that week end everything blurred together) but immediately after that happened, Jay was stunned and confused and reached out to Hailey while trying to process the idea. i don't think he ever actually wanted to lead Intelligence, but I think the idea of it fed into his exit, in a way. He is leading his own team, in Bolivia, and calling the shots the way he wants to do it, on his own terms. And it's crazy to think that there are very few things in Jay's life that he's gotten to choose for himself, you know?
He enlisted in the army and then stayed there until he nearly died and didn't even have the option to stay in. He joined the police force and did what was expected of him until he climbed ranks to make detective. He chose Intelligence when he had the choice of where to go after a major bust (CFire s2), but I could write another essay about how he potentially only chose it because it was what everyone was aiming for. It was this elite team and he had the strings to pull to get on it - did he want to be there or did he feel like he was supposed to want to be there so that's what he thought he wanted? And then he was told that he would one day take over. Never asked. Then there was the case in 10x03, where he jumped in and took matters into his own hands, took the lead the way he would one day have to if he stayed on this track, and he realized where that would one day lead - to becoming Voight.
I really think that is why he left. And he chose every part of it. He got to make the choice to not become Voight, and to stay Jay, even if that meant stepping back from a life he built to figure out what changes he wanted to make.
Which (finally) brings me back to the bridge of SCMB:
all the pain I should have saved oh, I was too afraid of living life in your footsteps in your heart or in your head oh, I was too afraid of living life in your footsteps
Jay saw the footsteps he was following, and he could see far enough ahead to see where they ended, and he didn't want that. He didn't want the journey or the destination, so he changed it.

Jay could be off commanding an other CPD unit or working for the Army stateside, but NO. The writers fucked everything up. His character, his relationship, his morals. This is not the Jay Halstead we know and love. This is not the Jay Halstead of seasons 6-9a
If Jesse wanted to leave, fine. But I seriously fucking doubt this is what he wanted for Jay and Upstead. He literally talked all the time about how much he loved the show and Upstead, so what gives? What's the point? Someone explain this to me.

When do you think Voight decided Jay would take over the unit? On a rewatch of CPD and the have one of the coolest OC relationships in my opinion. Voight goes from threatening to kick him out every other episode to today where Jays already in charge in some ways
So others might have different opinions, but for me, I feel like it's later, like late season 5/early or middle Season 6. I think from the beginning of his time in Intelligence, Voight saw that Jay was a good cop. He definitely always thought he had potential, and maybe in the back of his mind, he threw around the idea of Jay taking over the unit. But in the beginning of the series, he is also a bit more hot headed. Voight also had several other detectives he could have had take over the Unit (and for a while, it feels like he would lean towards Antonio) But I feel like he saw a lot of growth in Jay between seasons 5 and 6. Yes, those are also the season where Jay makes some not so great choices at points but he also starts to work through those choices in a different way. He goes to therapy. He is starting to become much more accountable. He seems to become more conscious of doing things the right way. I think Voight saw that, and saw not only what a good cop he was, but what a good leader he was becoming, and sometime around there decided he would take over the unit one day. What are others thoughts?

Have you ever watched CFD from season 8 onwards? I still somewhat enjoy it but I miss my baby Brian every single episode🥺
Are you keeping him alive in Chasing Fires?
Also are you keeping my babe Antonio? That’s another person that I miss sooo much
I havent seen anything past where I am in season 6. I think I gave up because the whole Brett/Antonio thing pissed me off.
I am about half way through S6 at mo. Brian has just been shot in the neck and is recovering.
I will be 100 percent keeping alive in Chasing Fires.
Antonio is sort of working on the Million Reasons time line so he has turned down Peter Stone's offer as a job and stays working for CPD. The whole thing with his addiction to drugs doesnt happen. He will continue to be Kat's partner and bestie. She needs someone to keep her head on straight.

Chicago Justice Season 1 Ep. 6 "Dead Meat"
Tumblr media
Dawson and Nagel investigate the murder of a Chicago police officer. Initially ruled a suicide due to the officer's cancer, the medical examiner discovered a broken neck. Stone and Valdez identify the prime suspect who was previously exonerated for deadly arson.
If you want to watch the series for yourself, stop reading! This post contains spoilers to the storyline.
The episode starts with a man in bed with his girlfriend. As they kiss, she asks him what she said. He says it's complicated and after being together for six years, she isn't going to give him the "thumbs up" to move on. She gets up, and when he asks where she's going, she says it's complicated. She's standing in the bathroom when the ceiling collapses.
Antonio Dawson and his partner Laura Nagel arrive at the motel and discover a dead man in the bathtub.
Tumblr media
Although the officer initially believes to be an obvious suicide, Dawson and Nagel point out that there is no knife and the water is still warm, indicating that the perpetrator intended for the body to decompose. The curious police officer learns that the deceased man is actually CPD officer Ted Cody.
ME Joy Fletcher informs them that the cause of death was a broken neck. The killer subdued the victim by placing a knee in the middle of his back and pulling his neck back. The victim was also subjected to a forceful grab and pull, causing severe injury. The victim was already deceased before the killer slit his wrists with a bread knife and disposed of his body in a bathtub. Antonio expresses gratitude to the ME for the information, but they later discover that the victim had pancreatic cancer and only had six weeks to live. It was revealed that the victim had mixed his chemotherapy with alcohol, which is strongly discouraged.
Antonio and Laura visit his ex-wife, Jessica Cody, who was unaware of his passing. Ted "TJ" Cody Jr. asked his mom if she was okay, but she said she would tell him once she went back inside.
Tumblr media
While searching Cody's home, Laura discovers bags of cash in the freezer. Later, they confront Cody's former partner, accusing him of being aware of the money Cody had hidden away. He claims ignorance and departs. They provide Anna Valdez with all the information they have gathered on the case so far.
Tumblr media
Laura receives a call disclosing that Cody conversed with his former partner three times on the day of his death. The officer informs them that they were discussing meat, and that he would collect Cody's meat order from a butcher once a month. The orders were worth a couple of thousand dollars. He claims it was entirely legitimate, and he believed Cody was friends with the owner. Laura doesn't believe it. Antonio claims he got the meat from Beckett's Meats.
Antonio visits Anna and Peter Stone. They tell him the story of John Beckett, who burned down his farm due to being heavily in debt, resulting in the death of one of the farmers. Antonio arrested him, but Beckett was acquitted by the jury after claiming it was an electrical fire. Stone sends Antonio to speak with Beckett.
Laura and Antonio visit the farm where Beckett is defensive, accusing Antonio of accusing him of murder again. Beckett denies knowing Officer Cody and allows them to search the area. Laura suggests going to the nearest bar since Cody's motel room lacked a minibar.
At the bar, bartender Jude Roche confirms seeing Cody and Beckett together a few nights prior. Beckett discloses that Cody was contemplating suicide, but he believed they were meeting at the bar to vent. Stone enters the interrogation room and asks Beckett what Cody was being paid for.
Tumblr media
He then visits Gail, the widow of the farmer who died in the fire on Beckett's farm years ago. Stone informs her that they are investigating Beckett and she is willing to commit perjury to help put him in prison.
During dinner, Anna and Stone discuss the original trial and what went wrong with the verdict. He tells a story about his father and a case he had in the past. He says that one day he will encounter a case where someone has lost the most important person in their life. He believes that if he cannot do something to ease their pain, he is not doing any good. Gail Marcus is that case for Stone. Laura interrupts to inform them that an officer found a knife while dumpster diving. The knife had a four-point match to John Beckett. Stone orders her to arrest him. Antonio and Laura arrest John in a crowded butcher shop.
Tumblr media
At the courthouse, Stone and Mark Jefferies exit the elevator to learn that Defense Attorney Mary Willis has filed a motion to suppress the knife that CPD found. Officer Jonesy found the knife in the dumpster at 2 am, 45 minutes after the city had emptied it. When Stone objected, Jonesy admitted to tampering with evidence. Stone asked where the knife was during questioning, and Jonesy revealed it was in his trunk while he spent the night at his ex-wife's place. The defense motion was granted, and the knife is inadmissible at trial.
Stone meets Beckett at a restaurant. This is the thorn that has been in his side since Beckett killed Thomas, the farmer. He tells Beckett that he can't let it go. Beckett tells him to look at this as a win for the little guys.
Stone and Jefferies walk down the street. Stone believes that this is Beckett's second murder, but he cannot prove either one. There is no evidence that Beckett murdered Cody, only that they met for drinks that night. Jefferies asks why Beckett killed Cody. Beckett beat him on the arson case because he was able to tell a better story. Juries love a good story, so tell them one.
Tumblr media
Anna discovers that the room was booked under an email that did not belong to Cody, but everything else was. The email referred to the book "The Jungle", which tells the story of a man who worked in a meat packing plant. Stone smirks, suggesting that Beckett probably didn't finish the book because Jurgis Rudkus goes to prison at the end.
Beckett sends Stone a package of meat with a card expressing no hard feelings. This gives Stone an idea. Anna confirms that Beckett started receiving money in 2012, right around the time of the arson trial. Stone realizes that Cody was blackmailing Beckett and they need to present this information to a grand jury.
Beckett presented all of his financial records, revealing that he had sold his boat to a woman for only $50,000, despite its actual value being half a million dollars. Stone requested to see the boat and recognized the buyer as one of the jurors from his arson trial. She confirmed this, but explained that she was going through difficult financial times.
Cody delivered the money and convinced the jury to sway. Stone fights against the double jeopardy law and presents proof that Beckett paid off the juror. As a result, he argues that Beckett was never in jeopardy and should be tried for arson. The felony murder of Paul Marcus will proceed.
The fire investigator stated that the fire burned for over 30 minutes before Beckett called it in. Paul Marcus died in the barn where he was sleeping. Antonio recounts his involvement in the 2012 investigation. Then, Gail Marcus takes the stand and shares her emotional story of the night her husband, Paul, died. She asks Beckett if it was worth ruining three lives.
Tumblr media
Beckett complains about the difficulties he faced in getting his business going while on the stand, hoping to win over the jury. He reveals that he ended up owing over $2 million for the farm and that his insurance money was used to pay back the government. He swears that he did not burn down his own farm.
Stone mentions the yacht he purchased with the insurance money and confronts him about bribing a juror. He claims to have burned himself while attempting to rescue the pigs and was unaware of Paul's presence in the barn. Beckett explains the process of handling pigs by grabbing their back legs, applying pressure on their back with the knee, and pulling their heads back. Stone does not respond further.
Beckett, his attorney, Stone, Anna, and Gail are in a private meeting. Beckett expresses his desire to take his chances in court. Stone agrees, as he has more charges waiting. He repeats what Beckett said in court today and shows them the photos, stating that he wrangled Cody just like he wrangled his pigs. Stone offers a plea deal of 35 years, which is a bargain considering the minimum sentence for two murders is natural life. Stone wants to hear the confession of Ted Cody's and Paul Marcus's murder. The killer admits to both. Gail expresses her disapproval.
At Molly's, Anna mentions her vegetarianism and briefly sympathizes with Beckett. This is why he does what he does. Antonio delivers Markus' jersey to Stone, who exclaims, "We got him!"

Do you have a favorite PD episode?
MEAN. I can't give you one single episode, dear anon. I can give you one from every season, which you did not ask for, but will get anyway!
Season 1: 8:30 PM (1x12) it's the crossover with Fire with the explosion at the hospital. The big spectacle episode- good stuff!
Season 2: A Number of Rats (2x20) WOW season 2 is Voight-heavy. I did enjoy the Yates stuff, though.
Season 3: The Cases that Need to be Solved (3x16) this is a tough episode to watch, but Jon Seda is so solid in this hour.
Season 4: A Shot Heard Around the World (4x08) one of the only true ensemble episodes
Season 5: Ghosts (5x18) Hailey is my favorite, Tracy is my favorite. No notes.
Season 6: Good Men (6x15) my hardest choice! This is the episode that pulled me back into CPD after I dropped it mid-season 4. The guest actor for Aiden is incredible and the "follow you blind" scene is iconic.
Season 7: I Was Here (7x13) admittedly Kim and Adam episodes don't typically draw me in but this one is painful and so, so good.
Season 8: Signs of Violence (8x11) see explanation for season 5.
Season 9: In the Dark (9x04) see explanations for season 5 and 8.
Peace!

I think another problem with the season finale was killing both Escano and Anna.
Escano had the potential to be a great villain but then he was dead with no mystery (like in season 6), we knew it was Anna but then she was dead too... so, what was the point? Other than Voight man pain.
But one thing is true, we don't have idea how season 10 is going to start. (Spoiler) According to some bts, Voight is out and about, so maybe a time jump? or the characters magical healing powers.
I read Jason is a producer now (not sure) but if he is, I lost my hope of ever getting rid of Voight.
And with Torres, the dynamics are going to be interesting.
Maybe the season finale was disappointing but the premiere looks promising.
Oh the point was entirely man pain. No doubt about that. While Escano had the makings of a great villain, he really was a mirror to Voight in a lot of ways which is an interesting dynamic, never thought he'd make it out of the season. But I was hoping Anna would. I really wanted to see her take over the gang under a new banner, her banner. Because I think she could have been a great foil for Voight and the rest of the team. Escano was very mano a mano with Voight, whereas Anna was a little more connected to them all. But yeah, in the end, it just seemed like a waste and for reasons that really made no sense to me.
I'm super intrigued by what we've seen so far for the new season. As to Jason, who knows what the producer credit means if it's true (and I don't doubt it is). but I've never thought he or Voight were going anywhere.
It's something they do have to think about soonish, if the show is going to continue past season 10, and I think it will. The same is true of Platt. CPD does have a mandatory retirement age, but that's also something the show could elect to ignore.

👻 - can you tease some wip ideas that have been haunting you/something you want to write in the future?
ooh, okay, yeah. this is fun. I got this idea back when Jesse first announced he was leaving CPD? I had a song on repeat all day at work (because it tickled my serotonin machine) and I kind of created a fic idea based on the initial assumption a lot of us had that they were going to kill Jay off? it's on my current wip list as "carry you" and it's a two-shot idea of two times Jay dies, running with my headcanon that (if he died off screen) Mouse died between seasons 6 and 7. Once when Jay dies on the table in 7x10, and this very brief moment of seeing his best friend on the other side and being sent back, and then a permanent death set during s10, and Jay watching his own funeral and then reuniting with Mouse there, too.
