Some quick notes on Nie Huaisang’s nickname 一问三不知
🤔 This is translated as “Head Shaker” in the official English version, but it means more than that
🤔 I’ve previously covered this in the cql subs critique, but here’s a more detailed explanation
Tumblr media
Ok so! We first see Nie Huaisang referred to as 一问三不知 in Ch 21 of the novel. In this scene, Wei Wuxian is talking to a man who claims to know a lot about the happenings in Qinghe.
This same conversation takes place in cql ep 34.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quite literally, 一问三不知 means “ask once (一问), and hear three ‘I don’t knows’ (三不知)”.
According to modern writer Deng Tuo 邓拓, the three unknowns refer to three different stages for any situation in a person’s life:
始: the beginning, or the origin of the event. In other words, the background and history of the event, and what caused it to happen in the first place
中: the middle, or the process. In other words, what is currently happening, how and whether the event is developing or devolving, and other factors and the reasons behind them
终: the end or conclusion. In other words, how the event was eventually resolved, the impact, and what is supposed to happen next
Deng Tuo covered this in his piece 《变三不知为三知》, or “Turning three unknowns into three knowns”.
In sum, 一问三不知 is a rather elegant moral lesson — an admonition to always consider and understand thoroughly the history, process, consequences, and interconnectedness of things before making a judgement or decision.
The earliest mention of 一问三不知 was in the pre-Qin text 《左传·鲁哀公二十七年》. In this anecdote, a certain general, Xun Yin 荀寅, gave inaccurate information to his superior Chen Chengzi 陈成子 on the enemy’s plans and was admonished as a result. In response, Xun Yin said with regret, “今我三不知而入之,不亦难乎” / “today I’ve made a report without thinking through the three unknowns. Am I not making the situation worse?”
There is an additional layered meaning to 一问三不知! While it largely refers to someone being uninformed about the origin, process, and conclusion of a situation, it can also refer to someone who is deliberately pretending to know nothing about anything.
Whoever in the cultivation world gave Nie Huaisang the title of 一问三不知 likely figured he lacked a clear understanding of events. In truth, the title was especially appropriate because he understood more about the “three unknowns” than he cared to let on.
Finally, it’s funny when you contrast Nie Huaisang’s title of 一问三不知 against that of the man Wei Wuxian was talking to, 清河百晓生 (reflected in the English translation as “The Know-It-All of Qinghe”). This title quite literally means “Qinghe man who knows of a hundred matters”.
It’s clear that there are gaps in this man’s knowledge — despite his boasts, he doesn’t know very much. In contrast, Nie Huaisang appears not to know anything, but he does!
My original explanation of 一问三不知 from ep 34 of the cql subs critique, para 349

The Yiling No-No-Square
Tumblr media
In episode 21, I noticed details in Jiang Cheng's and Wei Wuxian's conversation that seriously fucked me up. It fully changed the way I understand Wei Wuxian's mindset and Jiang Cheng's attitude towards him. Because – OOOF – shit is actually much darker than it seems on first (and second) re-watch.
So let me dive right in: (major spoilers below the cut)
This conversation takes place during the time Wei Wuxian re-enters the public sphere. After spending three months in the Burial Mounds, he has just met his sister and all the other cultivators again. Gossip is already spreading about his new found craft, and we see the beginning of what will be Wei Wuxian's ostracization from society – another social death. This trajectory is apparent to everyone, especially Jiang Cheng, who, as we know, is all about public relations. So, when he and Wei Wuxian are alone, he engages him in an an awkward conversation, with the goal of assimilating Wei Wuxian back into 'normality'. First mentioning Wei Wuxian's change in attitude towards Lan WangJi and then abruptly changing the topic to Yiling when Wei Wuxian smells the bait.
Tumblr media
The thing is, people have been talking a lot about what happened at Yiling. How horrible and mysterious the deaths were. Even Yanli didn't get an answer when she asked. So nobody knows for sure what happened in Yiling except for Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng. What all the rumors have in common though, is how difficult it was to identify Wen Cao's corpse. You know, the guy Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng asked Lan Wangji to leave to them. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian must have had an (maybe silent) agreement to not mention it to anyone, because now, when Jiang Cheng does, he triggers the following reaction.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian just STARES him. This is not a surprised stare. This is his -
- you-wanna-fuckin-die-stare! Because Jiang Cheng followed the traces of corpses to Yiling, he saw the aftermath of Wei Wuxian's revenge and he went along with it. Jiang Cheng was there in Yiling WITH him for killing Wen Cao in a way that was apparently so gruesome that it is a topic of concern among people who kill other people. Now, Jiang Cheng has had his revenge, but Wei Wuxian is the one carrying the burden of it – socially and mentally. So, when Jiang Cheng mentions Yiling, Wei Wuxian stares at him like: "GO ON, WHAT ABOUT YILING BRO?!" It is basically a threat. Outwardly, Wei Wuxian will continue to be the brother who takes Jiang Cheng punches and scolding, especially when Yanli is around, but Yiling is where he draws the line.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng immediately shuts up. And deflects into his role as clan leader.
Tumblr media
It is safer for him to tell him off as a clan leader than to push the hard boundary Wei Wuxian just set. Jiang Cheng knows what Wei Wuxian is capable of and he is SCARED. It is easy to miss how fucked up this conversation actually is, because of Wei Wuxian's hilarious mocking faces. We also know that Wei Wuxian has a habit of masking pain and vulnerability.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With this, both have found a role within which they can navigate their relationship. For Jiang Cheng it's the clan leader, for Wei Wuxian it's the unruly disciple. Especially Jiang Cheng will enforce this role whenever they are alone and border the brother-zone again. (For example, when he visits Wei Wuxian in Burial Mounds.) Wei WuXian has threatened Jiang Cheng and, from that point on, it clear to both of them, that despite what they are outwardly portraying, Wei Wuxian holds more power over Jiang Cheng than the other way around. And this is not an empty threat. Look at happens immediately afterward:
Tumblr media
Are you seeing this? Right after Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian establish their new association, Wei Wuxian's gaze goes to Jiang Cheng's 丹田 Dantian and he just LOOKS AT IT for a while. Long enough to make Jiang Cheng uncomfortable. Even though Jiang Cheng does not know that it is Wei Wuxian's Dantian, this stare should be enough to remind Jiang Cheng of another secret they promised not to tell anyone. When Jiang Cheng nervously asks him what he's looking at, Wei Wuxian shakes his head, but goes on to say:
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian would never outright mention that Jiang Cheng is indebted to him, but it is clear that he mocks Jiang Cheng's high and mighty attitude towards him – the one who enabled him to stay in his position. With this, Wei Wuxian basically tells Jiang Cheng that it is inappropriate for him to question his methods, and flexes with his power over him. We'll never know what happened in Yiling, and what Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng did to Wen Cao, but it seems severe enough for Wei Wuxian to blackmail Jiang Cheng if he threatens to disturb Wei Wuxian carefully re-constructed conscience.

I love this little scene:
Starts with NHS asking WWX about what he did to Wen Chao:
Tumblr media
But then WWX refuses to go into details xD
Yet, everyone naturally starts shaming him for not using Suibian anymore and they all go on about how WC was unrecognizable after WWX finished with him.
Y'all bitches have NO idea.
Look how proud he is xD (as he should)

1st of all I want to say your meta posts are absolutely amazing and you are a gift to the fandom. 2nd, if you’re taking questions right now, there is one moment that still confuses me in cql. It’s ep 21, ~26min in where he’s watching some when Wen prisoners be transported and he ends up kneeling down and in pain and then starts playing chenqing. I kind of assume it’s the resentful energy taking over and him not being able to control it yet, but I’m not sure and was curious on your thoughts.
Tumblr media
can you believe Wei Wuxian had the audacity to pass this moment off to Jiang Yanli as “the wind was too strong?” my dude.
You know, anon, I’m pretty much on the same page as you with this scene -- to me, it reads as Wei Wuxian still struggling to control the resentful energy vested in him by the Burial Mounds. Between his general shakiness, the way he sinks to the ground, supporting himself on Chenqing, the way he clutches at his chest (which we eventually come to understand as shorthand for ‘his lack of a golden core is hurting him right now’), and the fact that he looks like he’s five seconds from coughing up blood -- yeah, I think it’s pretty safe to say that Wei Wuxian is Not Having a Good Time for Resentful Energy reasons.
It also helps to look at a few of the scenes right before this! It’s tricky because we’re cutting between Wen Qing among the prisoners of war and the Sunshot strategy meeting, but this scene of Wei Wuxian in the wild more or less follows him attempting to meditate, resentful energy streaming off of his body, shaking and sweating alone in his rooms. It seems like he’s fighting a losing battle with it, because he ends up screaming--
Tumblr media
and clutching his side, again in the way that suggests something is wrong for golden core(less)-related reasons.
Tumblr media
y’all he is straight up not having a good time right now
We then cut to Jiang Cheng coming up to Jiang Yanli, informing us that Wei Wuxian has gone AWOL from the Qinghe Nie compound, and I can only imagine this is because Wei Wuxian is concerned about his lack of control potentially hurting anyone he cares about (see: the fact that Chenqing lashed out at Jiang Yanli the night before). He goes looking for a deserted plateau, and finds one, overlooking the place where the Wen prisoners of war are being whipped and driven along a riverside.
Aaand this is where I start veering into speculation and headcanon (no seriously, this is some serious headcanon territory), because I’ve always been intrigued by the practice of Empathy and its relationship to demonic cultivation: we get a few shaky, POV-style shots of the Wen prisoners of war intercut with Wei Wuxian slowly losing control. It’s also worth noting that Wei Wuxian losing control isn’t an explosive release of power, like Wen Ning on a rainy night in Qiongqi Dao -- it’s Wei Wuxian’s hands shaking, lifting Chenqing to his lips, playing an eerie melody that attacks indiscriminately, victims and soldiers alike. In other words, he lashes out, but in a manner that is controlled -- skilled, even.
What I’m trying to say is that I think Wei Wuxian spent a solid chunk of those three months in the Burial Mounds in Empathy with the lost spirits there -- lost spirits that were, to a certain extent, wronged souls driven to death by the Qishan Wen sect, who used the place as a dumping-ground for corpses and inconvenient prisoners. And when Wei Wuxian invites them in, allows them to take up residence in the emptiness left by his golden core, he also has to contend with their gibbering madness, their drive for bloody vengeance, their incoherent hatred for the violence done to them and the violence still being performed. When I say that Wei Wuxian is fighting for control, I don’t mean that he’s fighting to keep a lid on a roiling amount of resentful energy -- I mean that if he loses control, then those vengeful spirits gain control of his body. Those vengeful spirits gain control of him, and all of his talents, his skills, his devastating capability with a ghost flute.
He manages to rein them back -- again and again, he draws close to the edge and pulls back from it. He tames the spirits, and by the end of the Sunshot Campaign, he possesses an ironclad control over them, not inferior to Lan Wangji’s tight-gripped control over himself. But we can still see the cracks in his facade, the shaking effort it costs him -- he’s always in most danger of losing control when his emotions are high, when resentment fills the air (see: the Soup Incident during Sunshot, nearly taking Jin Zixun’s head off during the Phoenix Mountain hunt, and eventually, the bloodbath at Nightless City).
I forgot where I’ve aired this theory (probably in some tags, knowing me), but I like to think that when Wei Wuxian died at Nightless City, he buried the thousands of wronged souls of the Burial Mounds with him. It’s why he returns with so much more peace, post-resurrection -- for the first time in years, his mind is finally quiet.

What 无愧于心 really means
🐇 This phrase was mentioned by Wei Wuxian in CQL ep 7
🐇 English subs on various platforms have it as “no regrets” or “without regrets”, but the actual meaning is slightly different
Let’s go!
Tumblr media
Ok so! In the lantern scene in CQL, Wei Wuxian famously puts his hands together and says, “愿我魏无羡能够一生锄奸扶弱,无愧于心。”
One English tl of 无愧于心 reads, “live with no regrets”.
(Note that this scene only appears in CQL, and not the novel)
Tumblr media
Let’s start by looking at the meaning of 无愧. Here are some examples of how the word 愧 appears in some common compounds 组词:
惭愧: ashamed, embarrassed
愧疚: guilty
Put together with 无 (which means “none” or “without”), 无愧 literally means “without guilt” or “without shame”. More abstractly, it refers to “with a clear conscience”.
(Conversely, “regret” would probably have be represented as 遗憾, or 悔.)
Why this is important
Why are the concepts of guilt and having a clear conscience so important in the context of Wei Wuxian’s values and character?
To answer this question, let’s examine the meaning behind Chenqing 陈情, the name of Wei Wuxian’s flute.
陈情 was possibly derived from the poem 《九章·昔往日》 from the anthology 《楚辞》, which was written during the Warring States era and commonly attributed to Qu Yuan 屈原. The relevant line in 《楚辞》reads 愿陈情以白行兮,得罪过之不意, which is a lament on the poet’s deeds in their lifetime, and their tremendous guilt at unintentionally causing hurt to others with their actions.
This is a reflection of Wei Wuxian’s innermost struggle throughout — his straddling of the balance between doing the right thing in his heart, and unwillingly causing hurt to his loved ones by turning his back on family, society, and the “lawful path/正道”.
For reference, I’ve previously talked about Chenqing’s name in my critique of CQL episode 21, para 223.
To Wei Wuxian, the concept of guilt is closely tied to his decision to protect the Wens. At the time, the foreseeable consequences of doing so included the fracturing of his relationships with Yunmeng Jiang, and being cast out from cultivation society.
But held against the backdrop of the lantern pledge, we know that Wei Wuxian would most definitely have felt a much stronger degree of guilt if had he simply chosen to ignore the Wens, instead of helping them. The impact on the Wens was foremost on Wei Wuxian’s mind, as we can see from the earlier part of his pledge — 锄奸扶弱 (“eradicating evil and helping the weak”). He was committed to having a hand in doing good in the world by protecting people from harm.
Now, let’s revisit the subs’ translation of “no regrets” for a moment, and what it means in the broader socio-cultural context.
The concept of regret is comparatively individualistic, encompassing only the person’s own opinion of their past actions. In the context of a collectivistic society, wishing to live “without regrets” may have the potential to come across as self-serving: a life to be lived only at one’s own convenience and whims, without too much consideration of the potential impact on others.
Guilt, on the other hand, goes a step further by taking the interconnectedness of people and events (i.e. the impact on others and eventual consequences) into account. It’s worth noting that guilt is a core concept in Chinese society as well, even in modern times. This is seen in the use of the common phrase 面壁思过 “face the wall and reflect on the consequences of your actions”.
While it’s definitely possible that Wei Wuxian might have wanted to avoid incurring regret by helping the Wens, it’s important to note that he would also have been primarily acting from his conscience, with the ultimate desire to do good — hence 无愧.
The phrase 于心无愧 is not unique to CQL. It first appears in the text 《谢刘成父》 by Song dynasty writer Wang Ling 王令. The original line is 以义求人今遂得,于心无愧果为贤, which describes fulfilment in the form of a clear conscience, as a result of the seeking of righteouness.
Interestingly, the subs correctly translate 无愧 as “clean conscience” in cql ep 43 (see para 454 in the link)!

Some random, unbetaed snippets set during the Siji Manor arc in which I'm trying to process my Feelings about these two and about Wen Kexing's backstory. Spoilers for eps...mid-20s onward, I think, show canon only. CW for loudly implied, past, severe child abuse.

Even though Zhou Zishu has never slept so deeply beside another person since his master was still alive, he's too well-trained to forget just how dangerous the person at his side, ironically, actually is.
Every so often (when Chengling says something especially innocent, when sunlight glances a particular way off a kitchen knife, when Zhou Zishu smiles unprompted) he'll see Wen Kexing's eyes widen and his face go strangely blank, like a performer caught in the middle of switching out masks behind the curtain. It's the blankness that Zhou Zishu recognizes from the moments when Wen Kexing casually sets aside his gentlemanly front and leaves corpses in his wake.
The second most horrifying thing about it is the fact that Zhou Zishu can't sense any change in his qi - no focused heaviness of killing intent, no ozone tang of impending violence like a lightning strike. It's not because of the Nails slowly destroying his senses, either, but rather that this means Wen Kexing is either constantly on the edge of violence or the violence has simply settled so deeply that it's indistinguishable from his resting qi state.
The most horrifying thing about it, though, is what that implies about the years in which his shidi had been taken from him.

This just in: local sect leader shows affection by metaphorically knocking shit off the coffee table.
It’s the first time Jiang Cheng has seen Jin Ling in person since the morning after the temple, and Jin Zixuan’s proud posture with Jiang Yanli’s gentle eyes and the fire that is all Jin Ling himself is making Jiang Cheng realize that coming up to him in public was probably a big fucking mistake. Have you heard, the rumors would say, the fearsome Sandu Shengshou started bawling at the fucking conference like a mother on her daughter’s wedding day. His nephew is all grown up and Jiang Cheng squashes the (irrational, unhelpful, don’t do it you miserable bastard) urge to grab Jin Ling and fly back to Yunmeng.
“Your guan is crooked,” Jiang Cheng says instead.

The next time you feel compelled to teach Jin Ling how to challenge unstoppable natural forces, I recommend beginning with something which does not result in him causing a significant amount of damage to priceless family heirlooms with naught but a rope, a surprising degree of six-year-old child creativity, and a can-do attitude.
Sincerely,
Chief Cultivator Jin Guangyao
Chief Cultivator Jin Guangyao,
Sounds like not my problem.
Sincerely,

I'm finding a lot of mass-produced hanfu on Etsy being sold at prices that are sometimes twice as high as I've seen the same sets going for on other English-language hanfu sites. :O
So, uh. If that's your thing, before committing to an order, you might also take a look at sites like New Hanfu or Fashion Hanfu, both of which I've had decent luck with in terms of quality and shipping. Yesstyle.com is another option with greater variety than the other two, but my limited experience with it suggests that quality is a bit more...hit-or-miss?
On the other hand, Etsy does have merchants which do natural fiber fabrics. :D
