Absolutely obsessed with the idea of Jiang Cheng, in the wake of the Jiang Sect's massacre, just massively overdoing it with the defensive measures in Lotus Pier:
It was bad enough when they were first rebuilding, but in the nearly two decades that followed every single time Jiang Cheng had a nightmare about his family dying and/or Lotus Pier burning down, he would immediately get up and start working on the defensive arrays, or the evacuation plans, or so on...
People think of the Impure Realm as an impenetrable fortress, but after Lotus Pier burnt down and was rebuilt? No other sect could stand a chance against Jiang Cheng's obsessive paranoia.
Lotus Pier has everything from defensive arrays, to evacuation plans and saferooms, to secret codes and signals known only to the disciples, to hidden underground and underwater tunnels, to booby traps, barriers, poison gas, etc etc etc...
Never again will Lotus Pier be sieged—not if Jiang Cheng has anything to say about it.

People in fandom crave too much an unnecessary angst post-canon CQL that doesn't really reflect the true positive potential of the ending, but here my idea: LWJ hasn't at all the qualities that make him a good Chief Cultivator, from the sect's povs. The conferences are super awkward, Hanguang-Jun is not all accommodating like the Jins and makes the sect leader Yao spend many terrible and hard hours! But the worst? Hanguang-Jun dares to want to form a more open minded cultivation society, the unorthodox tricks are welcomed and there will be lessons when young students could learn in a totally safe way. Unless they are proven to be dangerous and have bad intentions, outsiders are not longer persecuted. And if someone dares to speak just one bad word on the Yiling Laozu, Hanguang-Jun would totally throw his guan right in his face.
Lan Wangji will really make regret the sect leader's choices and Wei Wuxian, totally fine and safe, will be super smug about it.

I think it's really funny that out of 3zun the one that probably likes drinking alcohol the most is in fact Lan Xichen.
Nie Mingjue canonically doesn't like drinking very much. Qinghe alcohol is probably effective for use as paint stripper so he might have a decent tolerance, he just doesn't enjoy it.
Jin Guangyao has likely deliberately worked up the exact tolerance he needs to drink a socially appropiate amount of alcohol at events without actully getting drunk, because I think the act of not being of sound mind in public is like a horror movie to him.
But Lan Xichen. Lan Xichen invented a whole new cultivation trick just to bypass his family's "one sip and we pass the fuck out" piss poor tolerance gene so he can drink as much alcohol as he wants. This man wants to go get white girl drunk with his sworn brothers so bad and neither of them are into it please pray for him.

I just realized the funniest thing about Lan Qiren not liking Wei Wuxian, ESPECIALLY once he realizes that he and LWJ like each other, which is that he sees Wangji as similar to his father, which would put Lan Qiren, as his teacher, in the same position as the teacher (Qinggheng-jun’s teacher) that Madam Lan killed. Madam Lan, the outsider who married in and, again, KILLED her husband’s teacher.
Lan Qiren thinks Wei Wuxian is gonna kill him omfg

MDZS cooks, rated by Jiang Yanli, the Queen of soup.
Wei Wuxian: abomination unto the kitchen gods! Eating his food is just the beginning of your suffering because rest assured, it'll hurt more coming out.
Lan Wangji: Actually decent at making simple dishes. Stickler for recipes.
Jin ZiXuan: Messes up the spice drawer and substitutes sugar for salt. Get him out of her kitchen!
Jiang Cheng: Elaborate, fancy recipes. Leaves a mountain of dishes in the sink.
Nie MingJue: Stress baker. Makes excuisite croissants, thanks to his upper arm strength.
Nie HuaiSang: Self-declared taste-tester. Will finish off an entire pot just tasting. Persona non grata in the kitchen.
Lan Xichen: Partner in Sunday baking class. Tends to slightly overmix cake batters and make dense spongecakes.
Jin GuangYao: Doesn't cook, but has a palate that should be preserved for posterity. Can tell all the ingredients in a recipe from one taste and recommend whatever is needed to fix it.
Jin Ling: Ruined the microwave trying to cook an egg.
Lan SiZhui: Takes after both his parents. As in, can cook simple recipes but tends to overspice.
Lan JingYi: Would rather live on takeouts and cup noodles.
Ouyang Zizhen: That child will probably get kidnapped one day, lured by a piece of cake. Can't boil water.
Jiang Fengmian: Actually knows his way around the kitchen.
Yu ZiYuan: Can toast bread and slather jam on it. That's pretty much it.
Lan Qiren: Excuse me? Why cook yourself when you can pay someone else to do it?
Wei ChangZe: King of barbecue. Has a secret spice mix that he hides from everyone.
Cangse Sanren: Can't believe she's saying this, but actually agrees with goatee Lan.
Wen Qing: Coffee connoisseur. Hasn't bothered to explore the rest of the food pyramid.
Wen Ning: Master Chef material.

Lan Qiren does not drink coffee. The Lan Family ‘rules’ do not advise it.
Lan Xichen only drinks coffee occasionally, when he has a lot of work to do and knows there won’t be anyone (or only Certain People) around to see/hear him get completely hyper and then crash dramatically two hours later.
Lan Wangji drank Wei Wuxian’s coffee once to prove a point. They do not speak of it again.

Lan Xichen, libra extraordinaire, has never made a decision in his life.
He's been trained to, of course, but only in an official capacity. His uncle once told him to only make decisions after gathering sufficient information, and that has since become the most important rule in his life. This means he's great at mediating conflict, hosting banquets, and making executive decisions like which village gets more rice and what policies he should enact, but he never knows what to eat for dinner and what to do during his free time.
Lan Wangji, neurodivergent/autistic icon, is the complete opposite. He's a picky perfectionist with a strict daily routine, which no one ever interrupts because why should they? It's just Wangji being Wangji. And, in fact, everyone should strive to be like him. Perhaps if he grew up somewhere rowdier like Lotus Pier or the Unclean Realm then someone would finagle him into being spontaneous, but this is the Cloud Recesses. Of course nobody bothered him until Wei Wuxian came along and turned his world upside down.
Before Wei Wuxian, though, there was Lan Xichen. He stops by the Jingshi often, not because he is concerned for his antisocial little brother (well, maybe just a little), but because he gets so bored sometimes and he never knows what to do. Whenever Uncle is busy, little Xichen likes to find little Wangji and follow his routine with him. Can I join you as you meditate, he asks, and can I eat dinner with you? What do you suggest I do after lectures tomorrow? The other day I took your advice and made a painting, do you wanna see it? Can you pick a book out of this pile for me to read first? I can't seem to decide.
This is why Lan Xichen gets along so well with people. He goes along with things, lets people make decisions for him, and genuinely enjoys it. He earns the trust of the skeptical people without even trying to, just because he lets them pick which wine to order at the inn and what day they should go on a night hunt. You might think it's quite counterintuitive for an all-important sect leader to be this indecisive, but it worked out for the majority of his life. Just like how he chooses to believe in the good in people, people also believe in the good in him.
These days, though, Lan Xichen is reconsidering his behavior. As weeks turn into months turn into years, he stares out the windows of the Hanshi and wonders: Would everything turn out differently if he made more decisions based on instinct? Who can he even trust anymore? Would Nie Mingjue still be alive today, if he didn't force him and A-Yao to become sworn brothers? Would A-Yao still be alive today, if he listened to Wangji and Wei-gongzi's warning sooner? All the people who tell him he did nothing wrong must be lying. How can nothing be his fault?
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji adds more items to his routine. With Lan Xichen in seclusion, he's busy now. He teaches and he nighthunts and he sits through meetings and he spends time with Wei Ying. He also visits his brother. He drops by the Hanshi every three days and says, can I join you as you meditate, and can I eat dinner with you? What do you suggest I do after lectures tomorrow? The other day I took your advice and wrote a new song, do you wanna hear it? Can you pick a book out of this pile for me to read first? I can't seem to decide.

Headcanon that there's absolutely no way the sword Nie Huaisang gave to the Wens was his real one, considering how his father died...
Wen Ruohan literally sabotaged their father's saber, causing it to break during a nighthunt and get him killed.
There's absolutely no way his da-ge would ever risk Wen Ruohan or any of his sons getting their hands on his little brother's saber...
More likely, it's hidden away in a qiankun pouch.
I doubt that they searched them going in — if they had, they probably would've just confiscated their swords then. Why wait?
Thus, I believe that the reason why Nie Huaisang was so willing to hand over his sword when asked was not just because he hates using it anyway, but also because it was literally just a decoy sword.

So I've been wondering about one particuar point on the "Jiang Cheng marriage recquirement" list and it's the one about low cultivation.
Now on its face, except for the "must be nice to jin ling" point, the whole thing just looks like the most standard list of "ideal wife characteristics under a patriarchal society." naturally beautiful, graceful and obedient, coming from a good family, voice not too loud, etc. This leads to either the interpretation that jiang cheng really wants that (doubt dot png) or just... put all the most stereotypical things on a list even though that's not what he really wants.
In that context "cultivation must not be too high" sounds like a typical "men are scared of women who are smarter/stronger" thing. you know, the dudes who feel 'intimidated' when their wife or girlfriend makes more money than them.
...Except wasn't Yanli openly mocked for her low cultivation? Like, wasn't one of the reasons Jin Zixuan was such an ass to her initially because he shallowly assumed her lower cultivation made her an unworthy marriage candidate? Jin Guangshan may hate women who can read but society overal doesn't give the impression that high cultivation in women is seen as something undesirable. I mean... a wife that never looks like she's over 20 even as she starts aging? yeah I have no problem believing a misogynistic society is okay with high cultivation.
So if it's not there just to fit the stereotypical standard of an ideal wife...
Jiang Cheng, are you just describing your sister?
LIke?? Every single point on this list applies to Yanli. All of them. I don't mean this in a freudian incest-y way but in a "jiang cheng are you so unaware of what you want in a partner you just took the only woman you've had an unambiguously good relationship with and hoped no one would notice???" way. Does he know the difference in what you should like about your sister and what you should like in a spouse? Is he even aware he's doing this? Jiang Cheng answer meeeee.

I totally get people wanting to write characters as asexual, and that is completely valid, I just find it hilarious when people write Lan Wangji as asexual.
The man who had a dream about shoving the most beautiful, annoying, trouble making cultivator to the floor and fucking him into oblivion in his own clan's public library.
The man who, first chance he got, shoved that same beautiful, annoying, troublemaking cultivator against a tree and all but tongue fucked his mouth.
The same man who constantly horny grips™️ his sword because he is probably trying to restrain himself from tearing off his crushes robes and slamming him into the ground, against a wall, a tree, any where he can.
The same man who tied his ribbon around his crushes wrists whenever he could, the same man who fucked his zhī jǐ on the ground behind a bush because he couldn't wait any longer.
That man? As asexual? Is just hilarious to me.

oddly specific headcanon but when wwx and lwj go out together wwx always complains that he doesn't have any data so he can't play pokemon go or scroll twitter so lwj gets unlimited data every month just so he can let wwx use his phone (or he uses a hotspot instead)
it's also great for when wwx has pressing questions he needs answering when he's out and about ("yes, lz i need to know the average life expectancy of a pigeon!! what if one dies right in front of me!!") etc. etc.
