I just want to let you know that you and others bloggers who talk about canon jiang cheng totally changed my mind about him. I was never a JC Stan or anything but he was a character I liked, I think the image I had of him was much more fanon JC.
I had read the novel years ago and didn’t remember many details from it by the time I watched the live action, and I think maybe JC is more likable in The Untamed?? Idk cause I actually liked him bruh…
So I started seeing some posts abou him here on tumblr and I was confused at first but then I was like “wait…that makes sense”, so it was a eye opener for me, that JC is not what the fandom paints him to be ~
Oh thank you anon! And to be honest, I like Jiang Cheng too. I just don't really like fanon Jiang Cheng who tends to be the exact opposite of his book character and somehow any of his actions are everyone else's fault. Jiang Cheng the book character I really enjoy!
CQL/The Untamed is a weird thing there because I finally put my finger on why it confuses people so badly when his actions are still there and Wei Wuxian is even less culpable and responsible for what happened than in the book, that they look at it and assume that Jiang Cheng is the good guy and Wei Wuxian is the bad guy seeking redemption. And that's cause the framing around him is all mucked up. As @chai-chahiye-yr said in a response to one of my other posts, he's often shown as looking proud in the background, or he's crying when the script calls for anger, or (my personal bug bear) they play up Wei Wuxian's trauma and cynophobia around dogs for comedy so his action of scaring Wei Wuxian with a dog so badly that he screams for either Lan Wangji or Jiang Yanli to come protect him from Jiang Cheng doesn't read as seriously as it should. The show did some interesting things, but it really mucked up his character with how dissonant the script and framing around his actions are, and honestly I can't really blame people anymore who are more tv focused than book focused because the camera and film language told them that Jiang Cheng was better than he was.
I'm glad that mine and other's posts were able to help you decide how you wanted to feel about Jiang Cheng, and I hope you continue to have many happy days in cql/mdzs fandom ahead! Thanks for the ask!

Nie Huaisang: Is Jiang Cheng here?
Wei Wuxian, after Jiang Cheng jumps out the window: You know what? He just left.
Nie Huaisang: Did he?
Wei Wuxian, as Jiang Cheng is reaching through the window for his jacket: ...Yeah, sorry.

self-indulgent 3zun ABO AU because I like putting JGY into ~situations~
Alpha NMJ, beta LXC, and omega JGY who has been masquerading as a beta in typical ABO trope fashion, except the dramatic omega reveal happens way back when he murders the Nie captain and gets kicked out of Qinghe.
(I really do wonder what an ABO universe would do to them, psychosocially-speaking, considering that their major flaws can be pretty neatly sorted into “stereotypical” ABO roles that can be used to malign them: Nie Mingjue’s saber-induced anger issues and prior jumping to conclusions, Lan Xichen’s tendency to peacekeep with his loved ones and mold himself into a mediator to a fault, and Jin Guangyao’s....... entire existence as, basically, a tiny venomous snake.)
Present day is post-war Jinlintai before anyone I like (read: JYL, JZX) dies, where 3zun are forced to figure (just enough of) their shit out earlier—WAY earlier—and have been in not just a sworn brotherhood but a mate bond for a while now because in a world with synaesthesic scent markers and mating bites, you don’t get to take things like that back...
... At the very beginning of which bond, NMJ, still incensed and affected by Baxia's resentment, basically accepts the relationship on the bad-faith condition that JGY doesn't "pull any of that manipulative omega shit.” Would he say something like that about Nie Huaisang? No, but he’s just reaching for what hurts. When asked to elaborate on what that actually means, he doesn’t actually have anything in mind and thus rifles around in his mental sack of negative omega stereotypes for all of three seconds before clarifying that he’s talking about all that nonsense with baiting people with heats and baby trapping and whatnot.
JGY, the bitter little gremlin that he is, takes this the worst way possible and has since been taking heat suppressant ✨️indefinitely✨️. We all know how that goes. Maybe he runs out, maybe his body gives out, but most likely Jin Guangshan decides that getting JGY knocked up and too busy to politically machinate against him in addition to all the political machinating he’s doing for him is to his benefit, and arranges the botching of the preparation of whatever tea JGY takes to make this happen. Ideally right in time for NMJ and LXC to be at Jinlintai.
Except this isn’t a sexy, “Oh no, I’m a secret omega and I went into heat! My love must now ravish me!” story. Despite his best efforts, everyone already knows JGY is an omega. Despite his best accidental counterefforts, he technically has two mates already. And still, three hours into NMJ and LXC’s visit, when he realizes what is happening, he fucking panics.
Heat brain isn’t fun brain. Heat brain on top of the writhing bag of neurotic rats that runs JGY’s brain is worse. He’s fucking dead, he thinks. NMJ definitely hates omegas other than his brother (has he met any others? JGY can’t remember, which is terrifying, because JGY remembers everything), and only tolerates JGY’s omega-ness because he’s on suppressants. Da-ge is going to be so mad. And er-ge is going to have to mediate again. Unacceptable! Mortifying! Possibly not an issue because he thinks he might be having a heart attack and dying!
He spends two hours wedged into an emergency bolt-hole he built into his quarters while LXC sits outside going “pspspsps” and NMJ guiltily retrieves increasingly unfeasible amounts of food from the kitchens. It does not end up a sexy heat. It ends up a “hold the hyperventilating omega while he repeatedly forgets how to breathe” heat, because the body is not going to do sexy times while experiencing the most dramatic fight or flight instinct JGY has ever felt. Thanks, chemically-induced hormone imbalance.
(Da-ge turns out to be a good weighted blanket. Compression is good for the anxiety. And guilt turns out good for forcing people to talk things over.)
(And nobody gets pregnant.)

i think one of the reasons i’m so drawn to xue yang (besides Hot. and Vaguely Evil) is that every time i see him i’m staring at an alternate universe wei wuxian. he and wwx are absolutely each other’s ‘what could have been’ and watching them interact is so fascinating

what exactly is the difference between cql and the novel? i thought the wangxian dynamic was well written and the ending for both implied they would be together irregardless if they spent some time apart,,, i think @jiangwanyincatmom might have spoken about this before but i can't seem to find anything. but yeah, curious to hear about your thoughts
Well anon, there's rather a lot of differences, to go over all of them with a fine toothed comb would take hours.
But a brief list of what I can recall as being different off the top of my head...
Wei Wuxian is not the founder of the ghostly path in CQL as the undead cannot be shown on television, ergo the ghostly path cannot exist and he actually becomes a modao user. Also he no longer invented it as he did in MDZS, that honor is now given to Xue Yang's sudden ancestor whose name I cannot recall, elevating Xue Yang from his book status as street orphan and dark shadow to Wei Wuxian into the heir to the modao path and downgrading Wei Wuxian into someone who learned how to use Modao by actually finding old manuals instead of it just being a lie in the book.
There is no Yin Iron in the book, the Yin Hufu comes from Wei Wuxian taking a sword that had festered in resentment for over four hundred years in the belly of the Xuanwu of Slaughter and reforging it into a tool.
The timeline is radically changed. In the show, there's sixteen years between Wei Wuxian's death and revival, in the book there's thirteen. In the book, the Sunshot Campaign takes three years, in the show it's about six months. The backstory is 23-26 chapters of a 126 chapter novel, the show has the backstory be 30 of 50 episodes. In the book, the focus of the plot is actually on the mystery of Nie Mingjue's body, Wei Wuxian's actual reasons for being despised by the Jianghu and the love story between him and Lan Wangji. In the show, most of that plot is on the war between him and the Wen, with the focus staying much more predominantly with the Wen than it ever was in the book. Also Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen are six years younger than Wei Wuxian and the events with them and Xue Yang don't happen till after Wei Wuxian is dead, in the show they are moved to be older than Wei Wuxian and mysteriously disappear from the plot for 30 episodes. Also Nie Mingjue's body is no longer scattered in the show, there is an evil sword instead and Jin Guangyao was still responsible for several crimes, but not nearly as many as he was in the book, since Xue Yang is no longer his contemporary and thus all of his crimes are no longer tied in with Jin Guangyao as well.
Wangxian are not actually romantically involved in the show. It is all relegated to subtext, subtext that would have been erased entirely but for Modaozushi fans getting angry about the changes being made to the show and the love story that would have gone to Wen Qing being mostly cut and more scenes of Wangxian added back in later.
The Wens have white and red robes in the book, the black is exclusive to CQL.
Wei Wuxian did not die at the same fight as Jiang Yanli, but three months later when the clans rallied back together and led a siege on the burial mounds. In addition only Wen Qing and (supposedly) Wen Ning died then, the rest of the Wens stayed behind and they had three more months waiting for the inevitable to come.
Wei Wuxian cries once in the book.
Lan Wangji loses both of his character arcs in the book when he translates into the show. He no longer is grappling with a great love who will have the world turn against him very quickly, including his own clan that has in their very motto to be righteous, nor how to express himself to Wei Wuxian in a manner that no longer leaves doubt between them. Lan Wangji's doubt and hesitation in those times between the war and Wei Wuxian's death is still there, but it is floundering without its anchoring points. In addition since Phoenix Mountain had to be radically altered, there is no longer his own crisis of understanding when he crosses a line that he should not cross and has to make peace with the fact that even he is capable of such actions.
There is a much stronger emphasis on Wei Wuxian, Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng all staying together forever that is almost completely absent in the book and it is silly because it ignores the natures of the characters involved. Jiang Yanli knows she'll marry out of her clan and most likely into the Jin clan. She can't stay forever. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng know this as well. Wei Wuxian also has a father who left the very same clan he is in now for love and that parallel is very much something that is hinted at in the book; Wei Wuxian never would have stayed in Yunmeng his whole life regardless of what happened. Also while Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli do have a very genuine sibling relationship and she calls him her didi (difference between shidi and didi is shidi is martial sibling or clan sibling and didi is just sibling, no distancers in play), Jiang Cheng was never really involved in that.
There is no Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing romance subplot. They meet once, she throws needles into his body to knock him out, transfers Wei Wuxian's golden core into his body while he's unconscious and they never meet again.
Lan Wangji does not become Chief Cultivator. That honor is reserved for Nie Huaisang.
And lastly, per the ending, while yes it is implied in CQL that they will meet again after some time traveling apart, that is still a radically different difference than them running away to get married, as we have in Modaozushi. An implied meeting is really not the same as eloping.
I hope that answers your questions, anon. These are just the ones I could remember after having not watched CQL in a year. I'm sure there are others.

What’s your take on the moment in episode 13 of Untamed where Lan sez- you shouldn’t flirt if you don’t mean it and Wei replies I didn’t flirt with you. I thought Lan was chiding Wei for toying with him.
I do think it's about that, and it's particularly intense because Lan Wangji is jealous of the attention Wei Wuxian is paying to MianMian. The scene in the book is clearer and more extreme - Wei Wuxian, shirtless, is bragging about how Mianmian will remember him forever because he saved her, and Lan Wangji gets angry -
Suddenly, Lan WangJi shoved him hard, raging, “So you also know that she will not be able to forget you for the rest of her life!!!”
and then when WWX is confused about why LWJ is so angry, they have this exchange:
Lan Wangji said, "If you do not have those intentions, then do not flirt with others. You are doing as you please, yet others will be in turmoil."
Wei Wuxian said, "It's not like you're the one I'm flirting with, so it wouldn't be you who's in turmoil either, unless..."
Lan Wangji asked harshly, "Unless what?"
Wei Wuxian, "Unless, Lan Zhan, you like MianMian!"
A moment later, Lan Wangji replied in a cold voice, "Please do not speak nonsense."
Then, Lan Wangji expresses his frustration by BITING Wei Wuxian on the arm, because he is just that intense. Also maybe it's a way to symbolize a romantic bond or engagement. They bite each others arms as a promise in Love Like the Galaxy, and this article says it's a custom of the Yao ethnic group in China: http://en.chinaculture.org/chineseway/2012-08/22/content_439263.htm

Wei Wuxian: Step up your game Huaisang, break out the L word.
Nie Huaisang: Lesbian?
Wei Wuxian: The other L word.
Nie Huaisang: Lesbians?
Wei Wuxian: Love, Huaisang. I wasn't trying to trick you.

Aroace-spec Character Winners' Tournament
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Please vote for who you believe is the most aroace-spec character, not the most popular. It will never be acceptable to post "anti-propaganda" in this tournament or invalidate a suggested identity because "they're not aroace enough." You will be blocked unless it's clearly a genuine mistake / misphrasing.]
Propaganda underneath the cut
Wen Qing from the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Submission: Lesbian Asexual
She just has the vibe. Trust me, I'm ace
Jiang Cheng from the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Submission 1: romantic and sex indifferent aroace
I love that guy, he’s the most aroace guy I’ve ever met. and his outfit is literally the ace flag plus he’s like wearing a ring that looks a lot like wearing a ring that looks a lot like the ace ring. and the fact that he has no canon love interest and is never shown to want a romantic or sexual relationship. he gives me very “romance is something other people do, I just don’t care for it, I got other things to do” you get me??
Submission 2: Aroace
Despite people trying to convince him to get married/get an heir, in 13 years he never finds someone. His list of bride qualities is absurd to the point of "no one like this exists so I'll never have to get married". Is grossed out by displays of sexual attraction. Purple
Submission 3: Both
No spouse. Wears ace colors. Case closed.

You know what, Nie Mingjue is actually really interesting in the frame of that Bojack Horseman quote - "Because if I don't, that means that all the damage I got isn't good damage, it's just damage. I have gotten nothing out of it, and all those years I was miserable was for nothing" - and honor. Of course everyone should be willing to die for honor and tradition and what is right because if they aren't, if his father has died for nothing, if he will die for nothing, there isn't any point to it, yeah?
