You’re kidding
Omg
Oh my god,
This entire time I thought his name was completely made up. Why the fuck did he name himself that tho, it’s just a bird!
I swear one day someone’s gonna say the name of that bird and give me a heart attack. I can’t believe I never knew this about one of my all time favourite fictional characters.

Hi, yeah, more of this. These screenshots (the first is from ep 93: The Cupcake Moment, the second I don’t know) have nothing to do with each other, but I’m still going to present them to you as Beau having a rough time and Yasha looking like she wants to beat someone (preferably Thoreau) up about it.

A Frumpkin loaf. Critical role has brought me so much joy, so I had to draw something.

Actually, speaking of Matt's reveal that the characters were all able to start with one magical item, I think that is probably an under-noticed but huge difference between campaigns 2 and 3.
Campaign 2 started out with incredibly destitute and scrappy PCs. They were level 2, not level 3 like the C3 characters are. They rarely had money, had trouble getting and keeping it, and that wasn't really on the characters - Matt designed the campaign that way. Their narrative was much more that of people struggling to survive in a world that was often aligned against them.
And I think that was incredibly on purpose, as a direct contrast to C1! They were proper rich by the end of campaign 1, and the frugal necessity of C2 was a welcome and interesting change.
But likewise, the change for C3 is also a bit of a breath of fresh air, three years later. We're starting at level 3, everyone's allowed a magic item, and everyone feels a bit more stable and sure of themselves at the start. Pacing-wise, it means we won't be hanging as much in the incredibly vulnerable lower levels. I think it's going to make for an interesting and contrasting party dynamic.

Imagine Caleb and Essek cuddling while reading, their 10 cats surrounding them, some sleeping in the cuddle pile with them, some making biscuits on Essek’s legs, and one just being a lil shit knocking books off the table.

Just a moment under the stars in a extra-planar tower conjured under and mountain of ice in a forgotten ancient city.

On a completely less serious note, I also did screenshot redraws for Fjord and Caleb. Bleb.

I've noticed a theme between Taliesin's character designs and their trauma. Percival's hair turned white from the stress of the Briarwoods murdering his family, Mollymauk/Lucien/Kingsley had the eyes of nine tattoos, Caduceus's hair is pink because of the red lichen tea that comes from the Blooming Grove which is (for most of the time during the campaign) being slowly consumed by corrupted magic, and now Ashton has what is basically a crater in the side of his head filled with slag glass and cracks in their arm filled with slag gold. I am deeply curious as to what this slag glass and gold is made from, and how Ashton's trauma directly relates to the character design choices Tal made.

Critical Role Campaign 2 Wrap Up thumbnail redraw!
Alternate Campaign 2 finale spoiler version far below the image description
[Full image description below]
[ID: A redraw of the Critical Role Campaign 2 Wrap Up thumbnail, in which the characters replace their players. Starting from the very front, Essek sits in front of the DM screen, elbows on the table and hands touching at the palms, and he has a slight smile as he looks into the camera. Seated in the row behind him, left to right: Fjord sits with an open mouth grin with his eyes blinked closed. Yasha wears a strained smile as she awkwardly stares into the camera. Jester is grinning as she stares somewhere to the top left corner of the screen. Veth sits a little further to the front but smiles with an open mouth, head cocked to the side, and eyes closed. Behind Veth is Mollymauk, leaning over a bit as he looks somewhere to the top left corner as well. In the back row from left to right: Beau is grinning with her eyes blinked half closed and looking at the camera. Caleb smiles wide as he blinks his eyes closed. Caduceus, like Molly, is leaning over slightly as he looks at something off screen. End ID.]

Okay I have to say, when I first heard Essek say that he doesn’t really like soup I immediately thought that Matt somehow forgot that he said Essek’s favourite food was soup. And then Veth did the insight check and Matt said Essek was making a joke, I was like,,,, that didn’t even sound sarcastic. Him joking didn’t even register as a possibility to me before Matt said it because it just very much DID NOT sound like a joke.
Here’s the thing though. This is probably one of the first times he’s attempting to make a joke, in decades, if not EVER. The Nein are his first group of friends. I think it’s safe to assume that in his adult life, Essek has never been in a position where he made jokes or had people make jokes around him until he met the Nein.
The only other person that he maybe would have joked around when he was younger would be Verin. And we really don’t know anything about their relationship aside from Essek saying that he trusts Verin. That’s it. We don’t even know if they’re still in touch or on speaking terms. The fact that you trust someone doesn’t mean that you have a good relationship with them after all. So if Essek ever did joke it’s very likely that it was not in the last couple of decades.
Anyway, TLDR: The man just legit does not know how to make a joke or maybe even just what qualifies as a joke. But he sees how the Nein interact with each other and constantly make jokes even under the most dire circumstances and he’s making such an effort to be part of that dynamic because for once in his life he has friends. And he’s learning what that means. After 120 years of solitude.
Of course he doesn’t fucking know how to make a joke that’s actually funny. Of course he barely knows what a joke is. So he just goes “ah yes I’ve told them before that I really like soup so if I say I’m not a big fan they’ll know that that’s very untrue and that’s funny!.. right?” And I find that extremely endearing.
