Can't stop thinking about Programmed Image on Rumblecusp. The sense of having come so far and clinging so hard to the person you have become--maybe you like yourself a little better now--amidst the fear that it could all be taken away. Caleb and Veth sitting alone as amber images swirl around them ("look what two small town kids have accomplished, to date"). The way the past surrounds them and it's painful ("Yasha with the silhouette of a woman in an open field" "and Caleb's schoolmates, and his parents, and a real cat, who's not made of fairy stuff"), but also mixed with the good ("There is Jester, pointing to stinky Caleb on day one" "look at Fjord getting attacked by turtles! Ha, that was good").

Moments. Just moments. All the moments that built this group along the way. Veth looking back at Caleb with her heart in her eyes, saying, "It's good to look back, even on the painful stuff. That's how you know you've moved forward and you're different and better. It's good to look back."

I just really love this scene.

Fifteen things I noted about CR2E103 “Maritime Mysteries”

The giggles and little smiles on the cast's faces, especially Marisha's, while Vilya talked about the Ashari. SO MUCH LOVE !!

Sam, a little shit : "We have to get off this island. But we can't just leave all these people here ! The V.O. community - sorry, the Vo community - is extremely important to us."

Oh I'm so INTRIGUED by the idea of shards of different planes slowly expending, because of Vokodo's influence !!!

Beau : "If someone says 'Don't go to the butthole', that's the first place to go." The others, realizing what she just said in metaphor could be weird if this wasn't a metaphor : "... Weeeeeelll..."

"Slight issue : ...we don't have a boat." OH NO THE FUCKING DRAGON TURTLE SANK THE BALL EATER.

Oh, no ! Vokodo is PISSED that Fjord's sword disappeared. Travis' "is this consequences for my actions ?" face is pretty great :

Oh the continuous talk with Jester about the Traveler, and her being lost in all of this is DELICIOUS. Jester always seems like a happy person, but underneath she's also a bundle of nerves, particularly about the Traveler. The later reveal that Artagan knew about the mind-wiping on the Rumblecusp island and redirected TravelerCon 3000 just in case it could serve its purpose is... very in-character for him. But I think he underestimated Jester once again, for she cares for what happens here. The fact that Artagan promised, a fey being doing a promise to a mortal, is a good sign though. Also, Laura Bailey is crying and I am crying. That's a rule.

Caleb's idea of projecting the memories of the Mighty Nein onto the dome is magical, and so thoughtful, I might have cried. Also, LITTLE KEYLETH IN A MEMORY !

Oh, no. Fjord, Jester, Yasha and Caduceus started to forget. This is bad, y'all, the DC seems pretty high ! This is gonna go fast.

The image of Yasha being aspired by the upside-down geyser, passing at high speed in front of Veth in the waterfall, and being thrown into the sky, is so fucking wild and funny. I was gripping the couch from laughing too hard. I want silly fanart of that

I think it was really interesting how this episode essentially had a reverse of the Caducues & Fjord dynamic where it was Fjord trying to turn Caddy away from the Magical Tentacle Sugar Daddy. Fjord trying and failing to brute force Caducues away as the blinded man blinds the other man.

it’s like, not even that she’d be in danger?? like, yes, there is of course that, and not being sure that artagan wasn’t Also trying to get rid of her along with everyone else, but it’s also:

jester’s always, always had a throughline of empathy and genuine caring even as a trickster. she’s spared her friends, or pulled tricks for their sakes, or otherwise realized they weren’t sustainable in that same way. at the end of the day she doesn’t want to hurt people, and doing so doesn’t sit right. even moreso if she’s close to them.

and artagan, her best and oldest friend, her teacher and her god, of sorts.... he doesn’t seem to have that. he cares about her, but he KNEW this island would take everything from people, from the people that pledged themselves to him, and because they weren’t jester, that was just. okay to him.

after he tries to reassure her, she says a line like “hey, maybe a couple ships will get eaten by a dragon turtle” and just sounds. absolutely unenthused. it’s not really so funny, to envision? what kind of a prank is that? artagan could sleep at night after letting that happen— could she?

there’s so much disillusionment happening so fast, and like. on top of that there’s this guilt to having religious revelations while a) you’ve brought all your friends somewhere dangerous for the deity you’re questioning and b) both your friends and artagan still need you to fulfill the same role, both right now and after this passes.

CR2E103- Maritime Mysteries

The rest of the group is so used to Jester and her charms that sometimes you meet a new person interacting with her and it just strikes all over again how good she is at the specific type of comfort involving just distracting and diffusing someone before they can spiral. I loved how she was able to get Vilya to laugh with the stupid Vokodo butthole plans.

I love that Vilya keeps scooping up Fjord without warning him first. It somehow gives her a lot of character with just how like, awkward and pragmatic and absent-minded that is. It makes me want to know more about Keyleth, tbh, because I think it would be fun to look for similarities between the two if I knew her at all.

Hey that conversation between Jester and The Traveler was so heartbreaking?? Because my takeaway wasn't that he didn't really care about Jester, but that he is so very selfish and, I would call it immature if he was human but he's not, so I'll just say alien. He's more apathetic than malicious. It must be so heartbreaking for Jester to go from having this comfort of an all-knowing presence who knows how to keep her safe to this person who, while still a friend, is immature and amoral and depends on her now instead of the other way around.

Caleb and Veth?? I have cried over them so many times and I'm doing it again here. I know she doesn't leave after this, but I also know that the question is still up in the air. I genuinely don't know what I'd do if she left the show, and I think Caleb doesn't, either. I have attached so hard to this weird disaster woman and her deeply felt but vaguely defined trauma wizard.

Caleb barely admitted to liking any of these people for such a long time, and look at where he is now! In some ways he guns the most hard the most explicitly for this family recently. I think he was the first to call it a family with Nott a little while ago. There's also his anger in the 'nobody leaves' moment with Beau after Ishrani, and the conversation and commitment he showed with Fjord. I think maybe Nott's change and the reality of losing her coming closer and closer is making Caleb like. Introspective about the good things he has, and maybe also wanting to make a point of reminding Veth more, too? He can't ask her to stay bc that would be selfish, but he can do his damndest to make sure she remembers what she'd be giving up and how much he loves her.

Yasha falling asleep to the image of her and Zuala was so interesting. It's been so long since Yasha lost her, and the grief of all that seems to have settled into her comfortably enough to be able to enjoy looking at images of them together and things. I don't think you ever get over a loss like that, but maybe it becomes easier to live alongside.

AAAA people losing their memories is so upsetting. What must that feel like? To know that something important is missing but not be able to conjure up what it is in your mind? and what happens if one of these days all three people with greater restoration get got? Will enough get remembered to defeat Vokodo without personal life details?

Yasha's wings are growing back! I didn't realize it was something that happened gradually, but I love that!

I also love her just chatting with Veth while she floats 30 feet in the air. I'm picturing her doing a cute little gentle bob up and down like an astronaut in zero gravity. I love how supportive she is of Yahsa, even if there's still little edges of fear in her somewhere.

I love Liam treating polymorph like the beginning of an Animorphs transformation where you have to wrangle the instincts of an animal and sometimes you lose and end up biting your friends bf the human brain kicks in entirely.

Also Caduceus scolding shark-Caleb is so friggin cute. Deuces is grumpy and tired and he just wants to get off this island and he does NOT have time for this shark nonsense. Please just get some legs already.

I just went through to get a transcript of the conversation between Artagan and Jester because I’m totally going to meta that stuff over the next couple days. Obviously we’re all going to disagree on this.

But.

I do want to point out?

Artagan didn’t explicitly promise anything. He said the words “I promise”. But he didn’t say what he was promising. There were no specifics in that sentence from him. And from a chaotic neutral archfey with a different morality than people on the Material Plane? That makes me a little nervous.
