It means getting all your yarn (or other craft supplies - I mean to do the fabric later on) out, all at once, in one place, and "air it out". I think ideally you'd do this in warm dry weather, and actually take it outside to shake out & set it in the sun for a while, but it feels like a New Year activity to me, so January it is.
Once you've got it all out where you can see it, you can of course inspect for and prevent insect damage, but also really see what you've got, and make plans. What to keep, what to donate, what projects are possible with that fancy skein you forgot about, etc. I'll be trying to assign yarn to specific (or vague) projects and putting it in labeled bags for each, and thus making a plan of projects to do this year. And I'll be able to see what exactly I'm missing to be able to complete those projects, so I don't go buying yarn willy nilly.
The idea comes from Brenda Dayne of the Cast On podcast, and it's such a good one that I'm trying to do it annually.

I'm embroidering something for my boyfriend for Christmas. Starry Night is his favorite painting and, whatdya know, I found an embroidery kit!
Guys..... I have fallen down the rabbit hole (needle hole?) of needlework accessories
I just bought like $70 of needle minders and threaders and other such tomfoolery
Today, I am going to go buy those silicone finger grippies that David said looked stupid on Patrick! They'll help me not hurt my fingers while pulling the needle!
Anyway!
If there's any cool tips and tricks for a beginner embroiderer, or good supply stores, please let me know 😘
