overseer: we need to reestablish a government and an economy, vault 79 and a horde of gold is just the thing to kickstart that process. jason: uhhh idk much about this 'economy' thing you keep bringing up but it sounds fake and isnt government the thing that led us to nuclear annihilation?

First playtest for Stampede Wasteland is tonight! Only doing minimal prep for it (since, ideally, that's all a regular GM would need to do). The biggest portion of that is rolling on some tables to generate a settlement that I'll be tossing the players into.
Thought it would be fun to show off the results and walk through how things are starting to come together with minimal effort!
Before I started any of this, I had a nugget of an idea about a faction of raiders that have taken over the town being one of the core sources of conflict, and now we're going to see how that might change or permutate based on how the settlement comes together.
Step 1 is rolling for the size of the settlement;
Tumblr media
We get a Medium Town. Nice. Nothing too exciting just yet.
Next is to roll a number of Features based on the size we just got.
Tumblr media
Medium towns get 3 Features. We get; Crash-Tech & Comms Relay, a Bazaar & Black Market & Foundry, and an Oasis and Stables. Each Feature has some extra options that help flesh them out, plus more specific mechanical things you can do with them, but I'll lave those for another time right now.
So far, this settlement has valuable Crash-Tech that helps keep it operating, a way to communicate with the wider world, places to buy cool things, but I'm paying special attention to the Oasis right now. Maybe that's why the raiders have taken this place over, to control the oasis? Let's see what else comes up.
The remaining tables are all optional details, but I rolled on all of them just to see what happens.
For a Key Figure in town, we get a Merchant "Prince".
Tumblr media
Maybe they made a deal with the Raiders involving the oasis? That could be interesting.
Next up is the settlement's general Style;
Tumblr media
We ended up with "rustic", I'm thinking very classic spaghetti western. Which is going to contrast very nicely with the town's Signature detail;
Tumblr media
A massive, half-broken glass dome! Which also dovetails nicely with the already present Crash-Tech feature. Clearly, this town was built in the remains of one of the ancient seed ships that crash landed on the planet.
So what's Weird about this town?
Tumblr media
Turns out the town is a cultic pilgrimage site. The crash site the settlement has been built on must be significant, maybe related to one of the Orbital Saints.
The next detail is about the local geography, giving some details on what the wider region might be like;
Tumblr media
And we get perpetual sandstorms! Must make travel difficult, especially for those pilgrims.
Lastly, there's the "What Keeps Them Safe (For Now)" table. Life in the Wasteland is difficult, and any settlement that lasts sticks around for a reason.
Tumblr media
We get "geographic quirk", so there's something special about the physical location of the town that keeps it safe. Maybe the town is built into cave systems that were dug out from within the crater of the seed ship, and that glass dome partially obscures the crater and caves from the sandstorms that howl all around.
And with that! The town is complete, aside from a name, but I'll figure that out later. Probably.
Anyways, testing of the tables complete and working as intended! I think a unique story came together with minimal effort and I'm excited to see what's gonna happen next.

Throwing my hat in the ring to cast tf141 in Fallout.
Price is a veteran NCR Ranger who saw both the first and second battles of the Hoover Dam as a young man. Following the collapse of the NCR he roves the wasteland as a sometimes bounty hunter, sometimes do-gooder when his conscience gets the better of him. He is haunted by the decline of the country he served, the country he believed in, knowing he had no power to save it. He is in the first stages of ghoulification, and is struggling to feel like there's any point prolonging the process.
Gaz is a former vault dweller who came to the surface, against the wishes of his fellow dwellers. He learned of the NCR and the progress it had made reestablishing the trappings of civilization, and left his home behind to fulfill his entire vault-dwelling purpose. Price keeps him from getting shot in the first settlement he stumbles across, and he's been tagging along with the old-timer ever since, trying to figure out what to do now that Plan A is a crater.
Ghost is a knight in the Brotherhood of Steel who is notorious for working alone. He comes from a family of wastelanders, which met its grisly end after the sins of his raider father caught up with him. The Brotherhood picked him up when a patrolling vertibird caught sight of his family home burning down, and found him standing in front of it with a lighter in hand. He isn't what you'd call a fanatic, though; he just likes to know where his next meal is coming from.
And Soap is Ghost's first-ever squire. Soap is a former NCR Ranger recruit who ran off when he saw the writing on the wall of the nation's decline, fully intent on joining the first organization he could find that might actually stand a chance of "saving" the world. Too late after joining did he realize the scope of the Brotherhood's goals, and the limited aid it was willing to offer civilians of the wasteland; he languished as an aspirant for years, with nowhere else to go after the bombing of Shady Sands, until Ghost handpicked him to be his squire.
No idea what their whole story would be, but I envision, after a series of wasteland shenanigans, Ghost and Soap leave the Brotherhood after a boiling point. They encounter Price and Gaz several times, and after more shenanigans, and Price's half-hearted-to-passionate proselytizing the values of democracy, they party up permanently, and Price realizes his dream of creating his own team—ranger squad 141.

The course is outlined in blue—it starts in the upper right-hand corner at the arena; proceeding counterclockwise to the Waldo Grade, which was an elevation change; next is Mushroom Mesa, which is followed by Ricks Rise, an elevation drop; a sharp left turn brings them to Ebe Crater, a big flat area with sinkholes that leads to the narrow slot through which is the curvy Beggar's Canyon; this leads to the Dune Sea portion of the race, but that was deleted; next is Arch Canyon, which leads to Jag Crag, where all the stalagmites and stalactites are, which goes into Lagulla Caves-where Rats Tyrell blows up; next is Tusken Turn, where the Raiders snipe at the Podracers. The last stretch is Hutt Flats, where Sebulba crashes.

the podrace sequence in phantom menace is admittedly long, but it also very visually exciting and uses many pretty environments. the combo of miniatures, matte paintings, and cgi works imho to make a convincing backdrop for the race. it's interesting to see it all broken down into the sequence, and fun to identify what part is the infamous beggar's canyon that luke flew through.

I have some stupid/uneducated questions about modern aircraft and firepower, if you can help.
Following some of your previous posts and answers, i've looked into the F-35 and I found out that for stealth missions, it carries bombs only in its internal bays and that it can only carry two 2000 pound bombs or 8 250 pound bombs GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb. That seems like a small amount of explosives. I know that bombs today are far more accurate than the ones from World War 2, Korea and Vietnam, but how effective are the bombs? Plus, the bomb might weigh 2000 pounds (or 500 or 1000), but that is the total weight, not how much explosive it has in it.
What would you be able to destroy with a 2000 pound bomb? A 10 or 20 story office building, a 4-6 lane bridge, electric station, a large factory?
And what could you destroy with a 250 pound Small Diameter Bomb or a 500 or 1000 pound bomb?
I'm asking because I'm a civilian and it is hard to imagine and visualise how effective they might be. If you have any reading material that might help, some YouTube videos or documentaries, I would appreciate that.
It's not a bomber. If you were looking to accomplish a strategic bombing mission, you wouldn't use the F-35, you'd use the B-21 Raider.
A 2,000 pound bomb typically carries around 950 pounds of tritonal and will create a crater approximately 50 feet across and 16 feet deep. I'd hate to give you such an answer, but when it comes to the effect that air-launched munitions have against ground targets, the answer is a solid "it depends." Building damage depends on construction - some buildings are more susceptible to building collapse than others. A vulnerable skyscraper is far more likely to cause secondary damage than a hardened target. The GBU-39 is meant to penetrate 3 feet of steel-reinforced concrete for precision damage to fixed structures, or the B-variant meant more for hitting mobile targets like armored vehicles. They're meant for depots or shallow fighting positions.
I understand how difficult it is to accurately model destruction as a civilian. Even as a military member, if you're not familiar with the engineering concepts behind bomb design, it can be difficult, so no worries about that.
Thanks for the question, Anon.

Guys we made the news lmao
I mean those people who raided the shiny mill made it onto the news. I saw it on TV while I was in the ER after that Scyther attack. We've also got articles now!
Paldea's new great crater: Breeding mill in Cortondo destroyed last Friday
There's also idiots like whoever wrote this one
"she bit my ear off": PSYCHO vigilantes BRUTALIZE local Eevee breeder in ILLEGAL raid
And of course the team plasma simps had to get in on it -_-

🥑🍆
Thank you, @jonnyonearth 🥰❤️
OC Questions 💜
🥑 [AVACADO] What will they never back down about, even if it makes them seem bad?
Emily 💚
The news of Emily packing up and moving her wasteland clinic from the Forest to the Crater didn't sit well with folks who knew her, supported her, and trusted her with treating them. Because of her choice, they feared her. To them, she was a monster, a Raider.
And yet, this was his Emily who was being vilified.
The same Emily who treated the sick and wounded, himself included. Emily, who held his hand when the pair stepped foot into what was Free States territory for the first time since Jeff's worst day, then held him in her arms while he sobbed. Emily, who believed in him as much as he believed in her.
To this day, Jeff still doesn't know why she chose that life, but he loves and trusts her enough to stand by her side. Emily isn't just a Raider, after all. She's a doctor, a friend, and someone who means the world to a certain someone.
So, if all of this makes Jeff a bad person, then so be it. More of Emily's amazing cooking–her wasteland chili is to die for–for him. 💚
🍆 [EGGPLANT] How are they used by others? How easily are they tricked into this?
Jeff has a big heart and is a people pleaser by default (he can be a bit gullible), so it's easy for someone unkind to take advantage of him. Most of the time, he doesn't notice any malicious intent because he's just happy to lend a hand. 💙
Befriend a deathclaw? Jeff loves friends! Save my friend? Absolutely! Confront everyone to boost morale? He doesn't like this, but he's off to talk to Kieran anyway~

After the nuking of his home, the breakup with his boyfriend, and the death of his beloved pet, Rowan feels pretty low, and he should probably go stay with someone for a while instead of staying alone in his empty suburban home.
Tumblr media
The discussions of the choices are below the poll in a readmore!
Max. Max is Rowan's sister Will's mentor / hanging-out partner. Pros:
off the beaten path, chance to get away from it all
if Max isn't a raider, he might be an ex-raider, and he certainly knows/understands the raider life
booze available
has a spare couch
has a pool!
Cons:
aggressive wildlife
disapproving looks from Max and Will
Brother Stevie and his proselytizing
Willow. Rowan doesn't know Willow too well, just as a somewhat older (by 4 years) Vault dweller from 76a.
Pros:
lives real close to the Whitespring and the New Responders
has a spare couch
nice property, great views and landscaping
has a hot tub (pool is a short walk away)
LOTS of booze available thanks to Willow's boyfriend Beckett
a disturbingly Vaultlike bunker basement
Cons:
aggressive creatures (scorched, SMs, mole miners, etc)
not allowed in the bunker basement
not allowed to even breathe on the clothing collection, much less touch it
no recreational chems, and they mean it
The Crater Raiders. Many of them are Rowan's good friends and think he's all right, if a little nerdy
Pros:
definitely can crash up there somewhere, they'll make room
booze and recreational chems available
no danger from aggressive wildlife/creatures
Cons:
Meg keeps giving Rowan the side-eye
everyone keeps getting the deathclaw story wrong
raiders want Rowan to go attack settlements with them
it's in the middle of Toxic Valley for cryin' out loud
noisy
The New Responders (Flatwoods / the Whitespring). Many of them at least know Rowan and appreciate the work he does trying to make things better in the wasteland.
Pros:
it's clean and has running water
no danger from aggressive wildlife/creatures
has hot food with regular mealtimes
they're nice people making a difference
Cons:
have to pay for a room, food and the amenities if he stays there (it's a small daily fee but still)
noisy
settlers/responders want Rowan to go do stuff for them all the time
Orlando keeps giving Rowan the side-eye
Rowan’s sister Will
Pros:
They’re family
Definitely has a spare bed/mattress
Rowan can have anything he wants from the place, Will gladly shares anything with her big bro
Cons:
They’re family
Will may be trying to set him up with someone already, Rowan’s not sure
Will’s place is next to a train station and there’s a lot of foot traffic around there
Will’s not actually here all that much, she’s usually off with Max somewhere

Idea, X6-88 eventually grows to accept life on the surface and gets over the prejudice the Institute instilled in him while keeping that very stiff "gotta complete the mission and I will revel in everyone's death if it gets results" attitude. Oddly he ends up working with Nick- albeit begrudgingly- on missing person cases when said missing persons are in the hands of raiders and supermutants. It gives him some sense of... purpose after the loss of the Institute.
This is based on the fact that unlike Danse, X6-88 is still recruitable even after blowing up his faction. He seems a bit oblivious to the fact that it's now a big crater- like he's in denial or something.

unmarked location about equidistant between devil's backbone and the elevator. you can see the crater facing north from the top of the elevator... what happened here! what was this building and why did it explode? also, i feel like this is evidence the weird aquatic mammal skeleton is prewar for sure: but what is it??? it has tusks apparently?
when i got here, raiders were getting their asses handed to them by an assaultron. i have no idea if this is pertinent to the location itself

YOOO I didn’t know you had fallout ocs tell me abt them. Who are their companions what’re their roles etc
Ah, what the hell.
My Lone Wanderer is Paladin Elizabeth Titus, who spent her early 20s trying to help the Capital Wasteland by completing her father's dream of Project Purity and bringing the might of the Brotherhood of Steel to those who most need it. She's been romantically connected to Amata Almodovar, Sarah Lyons, and Point Lookout's Nadine, and she's on good terms with Butch DeLoria, Star Paladin Cross, Fawkes, and a liberated Clover. Post-game, she has become estranged from the Brotherhood of Steel, and she's now doing work with the Abolitionists and Reilly's Rangers despite her activities being a topic of much speculation throughout the Capital Wasteland. She is a field medic and a pilot, she wields heavy weaponry with finesse, and she tends to keep everyone at arm's length in the belief that her own reputation will eventually harm them.
My Sole Survivor is Murphy Olson Kelly, thawed pre-war lawyer who made her way through the Railroad and the Brotherhood before finally settling with the Minutemen to find her son, then bring down the Institute. She's been romantically connected to Mayor John Hancock, Elder Arthur Maxson, and Robert Joseph MacCready, and she considers the rest of the companions close friends. She is a darling of the Commonwealth and is on good terms with nearly everyone besides the Institute, fundamentalist Brotherhood members, and skeptical Railroad agents. She relies on her charisma, persuasiveness, and twin plasma pistols to get by, and she is chock-full of survivor's guilt that sometimes manifests as psyker abilities, but more often results in her getting involved in every problem she finds.
My Courier Six is Fox, a desert enigma who seized New Vegas and the Hoover Dam as her own in an attempt to crush the Legion and fend off the New California Republic. She's been romantically connected to Benny Gecko, Rose of Sharon Cassidy, Red Lucy, The King, Ulysses, Beatrix Russell, and Craig Boone, and she is on good-to-mixed terms with the companions not because of her perceived reputation as a heartbreaker, but because of her inability to stand still and commit. She is generally liked, if a little feared, by the Mojave Wasteland, and she is considered a threat by Caesar's Legion and the NCR, albeit one that will eventually move on in the pursuit of something new. Fox follows whatever trail she is inclined to at the moment, and she wards off most dangers with shotgun blasts. It's unknown whether she still has her memories from before Goodsprings.
My Vault 76 Dweller is Dolores, the daughter of a wartime photographer and a veterinarian who took up residence in the Savage Divide in an abandoned train station that she turned into a home and renowned moonshine distillery. She's connected primarily to Foundation, but she's on good terms with the Crater, the Blue Ridge Caravan Company, and the Responders because everyone in Appalachia loves liquor. Her weapon of choice is a railway rifle.
My other Vault 76 Dweller is Rosalyn, whose last act before the bombs fell was making sure her mob-connected husband didn't make it to the vault in time. She spent some time with Rose and the raiders of the Crater, but recently became fascinated with the ill-fated Order of Mysteries and has been trying to restart the group. She primarily uses the Voice of Set and the Blade of Bastet in combat, but she does occasionally bust out the silver submachine gun of the Mistress's paramour.
With the exception of Rosalyn, my OCs have all made it onto my Archive of Our Own account in some form. Murphy and Elizabeth cross paths in my long-running post-game Fallout 4 series; Fox appeared in a one-off prompt fic that explores her relationship with Boone; and Dolores underwent a name change for some explicit encounters in Appalachia.
