Elide woke up alone, sprawled across her bed.

Groaning softly into the skin of her upper arm, she stretched and rolled over, blinking her eyes at sunny skies behind her side-by-side windows, sixth paned with rounded tops. Her gaze travelled to the canopy-esque set up she had above her bed, a simple wooden-pole square that she hung a multitude of plants from. 

Lorcan was gone, and she was grateful for that. It was always awkward, waiting around for a hook-up to leave so she could get on with her day. 

But Lorcan was… great. Really, he was. The sex had been amazing and he was gorgeous, truly beautiful, but it wasn’t just that. They got along well, when they were just lying in her bed, when she was sitting on her kitchen table and they were eating cereal. It was easy to laugh with him, to talk and banter with him. Elide groaned again and rolled over onto her stomach. You do not have the time for this, she reminded herself. 

She huffed and got out of bed, feeling that old familiar ache between her legs and on the bruises sucked onto her skin as she shuffled into the bathroom and turned on her shower. 

As the water warmed up, Elide shrugged on her fluffy bathrobe and went out to check her phone, opening the message from Nehemia, one of her new teacher colleagues. After Elide had moved from Perranth to Orynth, her sister Aelin had introduced her to her closest friends. They had all hit it off almost instantaneously and it was like they’d known each other all their lives. 

She was a little less freaked out by her new job now that she knew she’d have at least one friend there.

Plans for the day made, Elide turned on her music and hopped in the shower, the warm stream washing away the last night and the feeling of disappointment that she couldn’t quite place. 

After her shower, Elide dried and curled her hair, throwing on the red wrap dress that Aelin had made for her - it was from her newest collection and all of her friends often got the throwaways, not that there was ever anything wrong with them. Elide paired it with simple white sneakers and dropped her wallet, phone, keys, and a reusable bag into a white cross-body purse before she left her apartment complex. 

It was beautiful outside, a perfect late-August day so she decided to walk the short-ish distance to the Faliq family bakery, where Nesryn worked as a pastry chef alongside her father.

Elide walked into the air conditioned bakery to find Nesryn precariously balancing trays of mouth-watering, decadent pastries. She quickly moved, saving a plate of mille feuilles with pastry cream and strawberries from crashing to the floor. “Hey, Nes.” 

Nesryn grinned, “El, thank the gods.” She blew a flyaway strand of hair that had escaped her half-up, half-down bun do. “Cute dress.” She herself was wearing a pair of flour covered overalls and a black crop top, a pair of slip-on sneakers on her feet. They walked out to the patio to their normal table, where their friends were already sitting. 

“Thanks, Ae gave it to me. I’m liking the overalls look,” Elide said, setting down the tray and taking her seat beside her sister. “Gods, these look fucking amazing, Nes.” Lysandra passed her a glass filled with ice coffee as Nesryn sat down next to her fiancée and blushed under the praise. 

They dug in, catching up on each other’s lives. Nesryn and Lysandra had just returned from a vacation in Eyllwe and Nehemia lamented about missing home, but Elide knew she would never actually go through with forgetting everything and moving back. The wedding band on her finger and the matching one on Fenrys’ told a different tale. Their eloping was the best decision either of them had ever made. 

Elide commented on how happy Aelin looked, despite being awake and coherent before noon and her sister shyly shared she’d been seeing someone, a man named Rowan. Nehemia smiled, it seemed as though Rowan was a good friend of Fenrys’ and Fenrys had actually introduced the two of them. Aelin looked absolutely smitten and they were all so happy for her. She deserved a happy love, after her parents, after Sam… 

When Elide reached for the jam, her wrap top shifted and exposed one of the dark marks on the curve of her breast. Aelin squawked and Elide flushed, sitting back down, a hand over her chest as she watched her sister splutter. “Yes, Aelin?” 

“Wha- what- what is that?” The blonde reached over and used the tip of her index finger to pull back the neckline of Elide’s dress, baring the mark and the countless others on her pale skin. Elide slapped her sister’s hand away, preferring that she didn’t expose her in public. “Elide!” 

Everyone else gasped, intrigued as Elide relented. “Fine! I may have met a man at Emrys’ and hooked up with him… in the alley.” 

Her friends’ eyes widened as Aelin’s jaw dropped and soon enough they were congratulating her, pestering her for extremely intimate details she refused to give until they finally dropped the subject and went back to eating. 

“But was he any damn good?”

Elide hummed and sipped from her cold drink, “He was pretty any damn good.”

An hour later, they helped Nesryn clear the table and carried everything into the kitchen, saying hello to her father and mother. Sayed, her father, refused to let them leave without bags or boxes, depending on the choice, of their personal favourites. He claimed they were just laying around and they played along, but they knew better. 

Elide climbed into Nehemia’s car and they were off to the nearest craft and office supplies store. There was a sale and they thanked the gods. The school paid for… not enough and if they wanted their classes to be adequately decorated, they would have to pay out of pocket for a lot of it. 

Nehemia taught seventh grade at their school, while Elide taught kindergarten, so her class was much more brightly coloured. 

Currently, she was comparing a pack of Mr. Sketch Markers and regular old Crayolas. Nehemia glanced over at the packs, “Mr. Sketch are way better. I swear, they’ve never bled and they smell good.” 

She laughed and dropped the Mr. Sketch into her cart, checking off markers on her list. “Alright… I just need some… sticker paper for desk labels.” 

Nehemia nodded, “Sounds good. I really hope my stuff is hip enough.” Elide laughed again and she insisted, “Do you know how scary seventh grade girls are? I can’t have them dissing my class!” 

“I think you’ll be fine, Mi,” she said dryly, shaking her head a bit. “If I had you as my seventh grade teacher, I would’ve been in love with you, 100%.” 

“Aw, really?” 

“Totally!” 

“That’s so sweet!” Nehemia dropped a packet of thumbtacks into her basket and sighed, “Alright, I think I’m done for now. What about you?” 

“Just the sticker paper and then I’ll be good to go.” 

They quickly located the paper and Elide got a few packs before they made their way to the registry. She looked up as she was bagging her things in the cotton bag she’d brought, eyes landing on a tall man with dark hair thrown up in a messy bun. 

She almost called out ‘Lorcan’, but he turned and she didn’t recognize him. A weird feeling sunk into the pit of her stomach. Maybe she did regret only knowing him for one night, but it’s not like she could do anything about it. 

Slightly deflated, she remained mostly silent as Nehemia dropped her off. “El, are you alright? You seem a little bit…” 

Elide waved her off, “No, yeah, ‘m fine. I think I’m just tired. Hot today.” 

Nehemia didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t press the subject as Elide kissed her cheek and hopped out, waving when she unlocked the door of her building and slipped inside. 

Sleeping with Lorcan wasn’t a mistake, she didn’t regret that, but now that she thought about it… she would’ve liked to have seen him sleeping beside her in the morning. Would’ve liked to know how he took his coffee and how he kissed her good-bye.  

Making a disgusted sound in the back of her throat, Elide unlocked the door to her studio apartment and leaned back against the door in the dark, just staring at the empty space. 

There was something rumpled on the floor and she dropped her bags, walking towards it. It was her dress, somehow not ripped even though they hadn’t exactly been patient when they got to her apartment. 

With another groan, Elide changed aggressively in an old hoodie and sweats, ruining her curls by throwing her hair into a sloppy bun and plopped down on her bed, using the remote to turn on the TV mounted on the opposite wall. 

Feeling peckish, Elide stood up from bed and walked over to the kitchen. She grabbed the box of pastries Sayed had given her, opening it up to find an Earl Grey and honey-flavoured St. Honoré, which was a layer of puff pastry that served as a base for the large cream puffs dipped in caramel, filled with Earl Grey and honey infused pastry cream, and topped with whipped cream. 

Her mood lifted slightly as she cut herself a slice and read the note that Nesryn had left, letting her know that she’d been tweaking with the recipe and asking Elide to let her know what she thought. 

Elide took herself and her pasty back to bed after turning on her kettle and putting a scoop of loose tea into her diffuser-ball and dropping it in a mug. 

She sighed as she navigated to Netflix and clicked on a movie, already calling Aelin. Aelin didn’t get a word in before Elide was saying: “Clueless?” 

Her sister agreed immediately, “Clueless.”

Who are you named after?  My name can be traced back to my great grandpa on my mother’s side, I believe. But my mother would have you know that she merely enjoyed the sound of the name itself and its French meaning of “handsome”, upon choosing it for me. I personally enjoy the original Bretnic meaning of “the Moon.” I’m sure those are enough clues to solve what my true nymic is!

Last time you cried?  Back in the days, I would be a flowing river at the drop of a hat, but alas, life has a way of hardening flesh to stone. I recall exactly it being last November-December, after my biggest (and hopefully last) great fight with my mother. It was something that needed to happen. We are much closer now.

Do you like handwriting?  Overall, I do enjoy typing upon a keyboard. However, I find that getting my thoughts across on paper are much easier, because I can doodle alongside and have a bunch of arrows pointing to other stuff. It must be said that my handwriting is only legible to me and only me.

Favorite meal?  SUSHI!!! Sushi all day, everyday... if mercury poisoning and cash wasn’t too much of an issue. I like all shapes, sizes, and flavours of sushi. It is just simply the best. Favourite fish? It would have to be Toro or Fatty Tuna in English. The flavour and just simply putting it on your tongue and having it melt and...okay we need to move on.

Longest relationship?  3 Months. High School fling. Not the longest, I know, but I have come to realize that a well bonded and loving friendship(s) in my life is what I need more and find more important.

Do you still have tonsils? I sadly do. I would love to rid of them but at this point, it is of no great issue (and I am scared of the idea of an operation, lol).

Would you bungee jump?  I might. With every waking hour of my mortal coil, I grow to be only a better poster child of Nietzsche.

What’s your favorite breakfast? Eggs Benedict. Breakfast of queens, and none can say otherwise. However, not the normal sausage version as I do not eat meat (Pescatarian here!). I prefer the “scandi” version with cream cheese, smoked salmon, onions, and green capers.

Do you untie your laces when taking shoes off?  I am way too lazy to actually tie and untie my shoes. Just treat them as tight lil’ slippers.

Favorite ice cream?  Hmm, I would say, that is has to be Cookie Dough. I love me some Cookie Dough. Every time my grandma would bake, I would scrap the raw dough from the spoons and bowl, and worry not, it was a small amount thus safe (Europeans, do not @ me - raw egg and flour is bad).

What’s the first thing you notice about a person?  Eyes and teeth and then hair. Perhaps smile as well. It makes sense, as we tend to notices faces first.

Football/softball?  I’m not a fan of any sports, ‘fraid to say. But my best friend plays football (soccer) and I gladly watch to support him.

What color pants are you wearing?  Navy blue? If you are referring to American pants. If the British pants, then black.

Last thing you ate?  Seared Salmon with roasted potatoes and a nice lettuce salad with a glass of German Riesling. 

What are you listening to? Currently, nothing, but the last thing as been the Outer Wilds soundtrack. A+ Game. Highly recommend.

Hey, look, I finally did that video about Reginald Barclay, Sherlock Holmes, and the Accidentally Autistic Character.

This was a bit more of a pain to edit than me talking to the camera, but I didn’t have to put make-up on and look presentable, so there’s that.

Tell me what you think of the new format and the video itself so that I know what to focus on next!

Wait… Is Barclay autistic?

-Intro-

So, maybe I’m a little late to the party on this one, but in my defence, I haven’t really gone back to watch TNG since I started serious studying autism. And when I have, I’ve been cherry-picking favourite episodes, which has never meant Barclay episodes for anyone ever.

Except maybe me now.

For those of you who haven’t seen the TNG episode Hollow Pursuits - or those of you who usually skip it - in it, Barclay is an engineering officer working on the plot of the week - a broken canister, followed by weird malfunctions around the ship. He’s late to work, however, and struggles to talk to people, stuttering and not making eye contact.

Riker and Geordi bitch about him to Picard, who quite rightly shuts them the fuck down!

What is this? High school? This is Starfleet, motherfuckers!

Picard had zero tolerance from bullying on his ship. He reminds Geordi that, as Barclay’s boss, it’s his job to make sure that Barclay fits in and gets on with his job and bitching about it to Picard isn’t handling it.

Geordi isn’t quite sure how to go about this because he missed the Starfleet seminar on performance management, but Guinan is there to help with her wise words of wisdom, telling Geordi that sometimes people who come across as socially awkward can be pretty cool once you get to know them.

So, Geordi makes an effort, but Barclay keeps being late. Geordi eventually catches him in the holodeck, playing out heroic scenarios with holographic recreations of the crew. Geordi once fell in love with a holographic woman, so he can’t say shit, but he does recommend that Barclay speak with Troi.

I actually really like how Star Trek handles shit like this. A similar scenario played out with Seven of Nine towards the end of Voyager, where she used the holodeck to play out the kind of future she wanted, where she felt more a part of the Voyager crew.

Instead of the people around them treating this like a TERRIBLE AWFUL SICK THING THAT THEY NEED TO BE IMMEDIATELY SECTIONED FOR, it’s recognised as a natural, if a little maladaptive, coping mechanism for actual problems, and the solution isn’t to shame the characters or immediately turn to “curing” them - because obviously only sick people would do something like that - but to solve the problems that make them retreat to the holodeck.

For Barclay, that’s Geordi actually sitting down and talking to him, so that he can learn why Barclay has so much difficulty and how he can help, as well as Geordi referring him to Troi.

The problem is that Geordi forgot that Troi is smokin’, and Barclay can’t get over his boner long enough to actually be honest with her, and who can blame him?

Things get worse, tensions rise, but then Barclay saves the day and everyone agrees that he’s actually okay.

So, Barclay is pretty clearly autistic, though it’s never stated in-show. From a Watsonian perspective, it’s kind of sad that autism diagnosis is still so terrible - and people like Barclay can still fall through the cracks - in the 24th century. From a Doylist perspective, well, duh, the episode first aired in 1990, two years before “Asperger’s Syndrome” became a standard diagnosis.

As much as Asperger’s has been removed from the DSM V because it’s really just autism and had no real difference to autism, it’s important to remember that the diagnostic criteria for autism was extremely restrictive before Asperger’s came about and mostly focused on children. Asperger’s as a diagnosis covered part of the spectrum that went undiagnosed beforehand, and it’s probably the part that Barclay inhabits.

So, if he’s not stated as autistic in the text, and there was no realistic way that the writer of the episode or the actor could have been drawing on autism because that part of the spectrum wasn’t recognised, then surely this is just a headcanon, right? Yes, Barclay seems autistic, but that’s just my projection, not intent, right?

This is where the category of “accidentally autistic” comes in.

Usually we consider autistic characters as “canon” or “headcanon”. For my reviews, I define canon as a character that is either stated as autistic in the text or marketing, has been confirmed as autistic by their creator, or the writer/actor has admitted to drawing on autistic people when creating the character.

Anything else would usually fall under “headcanon”, but I want to propose a third category. The “accidental autistic”. This is when the writer/actor has drawn on autistic people without knowing that they were autistic.

Why the fuck am I drawing this distinction when this is just another flavour of writers/actors drawing inspiration from autistic people? I don’t know, just roll with it, we’re already way too deep into this video to stop now.

Sarah Higley, the writer for Hollow Pursuits, deliberately wrote Barclay to be a depiction of Trekkies. Specifically, socially awkward Trekkies who seemed to rely on the show the same way Barclay relied on the holodeck.

It’s pretty clear that what was happening was that she was taking the nerd stereotypes that are now generally agreed to just be unrecognised autistic traits. She took autistic trek fans and wrote them into the show, without realising that “autism” was the word for what she had Barclay pretty accurately describing.

-You’re just projecting! She said that she wrote Trekkies into the show, you can’t assume that means autism! Not all Trekkies are autistic!-

I never said that, and Wikipedia agrees that he’s autistic and we all know that Wikipedia is never wrong, so there!

But okay, I’ll concede the point that Barclay isn’t based on a person, but rather, the amorphous concept of the most socially awkward members of the Trek fandom at the time. It’d be more concrete if he was actually based on a single person.

You know, like Sherlock Holmes was.

There have been a lot of discussions around Benetit Cumface’s portrayl of Holmes, with the National Autistic Society (pretty much THE autism charity in the UK) actually headcanoning it, and then Beantat Crayola saying that the headcanon was offensive to the REAL autistic people who SUFFER TERRIBLY because it gave them TOO MUCH HOPE.

And no, I’m not making that up, I wish I was…

But I’m not interested in your mere televisual adaptations. Pick up a book you fucking fake nerds and get some real learning done!

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - the guy who originally wrote Holmes - based him on a real person. Specifically, his old university professor Joseph Bell. And this was so spot-on that another student of Bell’s recognised him in the character.

Now, if 1990 was too long ago for an autism diagnosis, Victorian England was most definitely so, but it’s pretty easy to recognise autism in Holmes - again in the real original works, Cumface Benetit can fuck right off - and if he was based on a real person, there’s a good chance that he was written as autistic, even if no one knew what that was at the time.

So, what’s my point? Who cares?

Well, my point is that - despite the fact that the leading UK autism charity fucking does it - autistic headcanons are still kind of shat on by people.

Maybe because they hate autistic people or something, but I don’t know, I’m just spitballing here.

Now, while there is an argument in that case for just saying ALL HEADCANONS EVER ARE VALID, I do agree that some are more valid than others, and in fact, a lot of what I consider “canon” would be considered “headcanon” by others.

So, I think that there is room for some middle ground. Something that does have basis as canonical, even if it might be news to the creators.

But hey, what the fuck do I know, I’m just some rando on the internet!

5: Do you have kids? I’ve pretty much adopted half the people who come to my streams. Any one else wanna be mah kid? I’m open to adopt more.

6: If you were another person, would you be friends with you?  I always wished I had a twin, or a clone. I know we would be good friends and would probably be twice as productive together.

7: Do you use sarcasm? Only when I’m annoyed or joking around. Other than that I’m a very earnest person.

14: What is the first thing you notice about people?  The way people laugh, and their sense of humor in general.

34: Who do you miss right now? My friends. We all live in different cities and school is out so we have to plan when we’ll meet up again over the summer.

37: What is the best sound? I’m caught between morning rain, laughing friends, and a sleeping baby. All of those are good sounds to me.

39: What is the furthest you have ever traveled? St. Louis, Misssouri for a robotics competition. I’m hoping to change that this summer though
