TMNT 2012: Monster AU
Remember that 2012 Halloween toy line where the Turtles were monsters? So I made a little AU based around that where the Turtles and all their friends are monsters or something else...
Leonardo - Mummy, was a royal that was given new life thanks to the Egyptian gods. Often bickers with Raph over who’s the superior royal (Leo’s actual royalty, Raph just claims he is causs ego)
Raphael - Vampire, calls himself the Prince of Darkness. Massive ego. He’s in love with the vampire slayer who’s hunting him down and wants to drink her blood to make her his vampire queen.
Donatello - Frankenstein’s Monster, created by Casey and very intelligent despite just been created and given life. Struggles to speak. Has a special connection and bond with April who uses to her powers to mentally communicate with him so she can hear him speak fully.
Michelangelo - Werewolf, his wolf transformation only comes out at a full moon so he’s his regular self the rest of the time but people think he’s more fun when transformed
April - Basically Carrie minus the abusive parent. Her father worries for her and her powers losing control and hurting those she loves, she feels like a freak but then she meets the Turtles and feels at home and slowly learns to control her powers.
Casey - Dr Frankenstein. A mediocre scientist, he created Donnie to prove he’s the best but turns out his creation is smarter than him and he hates it.
Karai - Gorgon (basically Medusa) and yes she can turn peoples into stone if you look into her eyes. Often wears shades or a blind fold to avoid eye contact.
Splinter - Ghost, a wise spirit who’s haunts the Turtles and friends.
Shinigami - Witch (shocker), usually everyone ago to for spells to solve their problems (Ex: Raph once went to her to make him a love potion, and once Slash asked her to help cure his “condition”), but she just messes with them and makes spells that just make their situation even worse.
Mona Lisa - Vampire Hunter. A Van Helsing and is hunting Raph down. Refuses to fall for his tactics and tricks (no matter how charming he is!)
Leatherhead - A sea monster like creature (like the creature of the black lagoon). Was an outsider and loner, bad social skills, but then met and befriended Mikey. He’s slowly opening up more and more when with him.
Slash - Something similar to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, he’s got two personalities that clash (Spike and Slash), he hates it and wishes to be freed from this “cruse”.
Renet - Average human, she’s dating Mikey and he desperately tries to hide the fact he’s a werewolf from her. She already knows.

I’m afraid I haven’t kept up with my reading in the past few years. Last thing I read was “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jeanette McCurdy (so good holy shit” but I think everyone knows that book by now. So I am going to rec some of my favorite and comfort books.
This is my favorite book of all time. I absolutely love the way Peter S. Beagle writes. If you love the movie, the book makes the movie so much better. The graphic novel is also a favorite, it’s gorgeous.
I can remember reading Allie Brosh online eons ago. Her first book has the best depiction of depression I’ve ever seen. And the second book in particular means the world to me. I got it a year after my brother’s passing and her talking about her grief over her sister’s death helped me understand my grief and pain. They’re equal parts hilarious and gutting. Absolute favorites that I reread every year if I can.
Anything Carrie Fisher. Just like Allie Brosh she’s equal parts hilarious and gutting. I read this book when I found it at the thrift store I worked at and it’s stayed with me through three moves and more. Read all her stuff, she’s brilliant and I miss her constantly.
This was one of the books my mom had on the shelf she told me not to look at. I constantly looked at it. The artwork in it spoke to me and stuck with me all through my adolescence. There’s a piece of art that I believe is part of my monster fucker origin. But the story is nice and short and it’s really fun.
As a child my mom put on the universal monster movies between Disney viewings to save her sanity. Creature from the Black Lagoon was a marvel to me. The underwater scenes were my favorite. So this book and the creation of the character was the perfect read for me. Millicent Patrick is one of the coolest people to ever exist.
Two of my favorite Beauty and the Beast retellings I think Robin McKinley is pretty much on everyone’s list. Beast is a really fascinating retell from the Beast’s pov, and it still strikes me to this day. (Don’t tell anyone but I stole the Beast book from my high school back in the day).
When I turned 18 these were the books mom bought me for my birthday. Granted, this was also the woman who let me read Interview With a Vampire way too young so I dunno why she thought this would be such a shocking gift. Anyways, these books really introduced me to erotic writing and are probably the reason I’m even here today.
Shout out to @monster-bait this book is so much fun and the characters are enchanting. I really want to get her new book but I’ve been broke and I love having physical copies. (Also I haven’t been reading lately and I’d feel bad if the book just sat there).
I’d love to have suggestions and if any of you have books out there you’ve published you’d like me to read please let me know! I’d love to support my fellow writers here before I buy anything else.

oooo can you give us a little info on the essay? sounds really interesting
Ok so the place is called Silver Springs, and it is perhaps the biggest artisanal spring in the world. People have been using the springs since the early Pleistocene, but tourist activity started in the late 1800’s when glass bottom boat tours got started. This escalated into making it the premier spot for Floridian tourism from like 1910-1970, when Disney changed tourism and how Florida was viewed by the US public as a whole. During it reign as king of tourism, Silver Springs had so many weird shenanigans such as invasive herpes monkeys, the creation of a specialized park for black US Americans, and the filming of several movies, including creature from the black lagoon.

Ricou Browning Remembered
Yesterday, February 27th, marked the 1 year Anniversary of the passing of underwater stuntman Ricou Browing.
Ricou will be forever remembered as the actor who played the Gill-Man in the underwater scenes in the ''Creature from the Black Lagoon'' Series for Universal Studios.

Ricou was the last living Universal Studios Monster. He also helped in creation of the ''Flipper'' TV Series and worked on the underwater scenes for ''Thunderball.''

Workshop By The Sea
Dim beams of sunlight streamed in through the dirty workshop windows, barely illuminating the cramped space. Statues of thousands of creatures, carved from ancient oak, decorated the surfaces. Their empty eyes observing their creator with a silent judgement as the chill Maine air carried in the smell of the ocean.
Shhhh shhhh shhhh
Sandpaper glided along the smooth wood
Uselessly.
Shavings littered the floor like tan mountains,
Growing with each pass of his weathered hands.
His eyes, cyan-wrapped gold, fixed before him
Unmoving.
Muscles in his shoulders rolled like the waves
Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back.
He waited for her but she stayed away,
Heartbroken.
She would never step into this haven.
She would not come, her voice lost to him forever.
He had only himself to blame for this.
So foolish
His words cut deep, he spat and cursed her name
Leaving infected wounds in his cruel wake
He tore her apart until all that remained
Of her heart
Was a pile of despair and deep anguish
With the sawdust on his cold workshop floor.
Shhh shhh shhh
As The Stars Move By
Bursts of colour and light fill the empty, forming storms of activity that had never been seen before. The silence is loud and the universe young, ready to grow into something entirely new.
Pop pop pop
They had known each other before themselves
New twin flames
In the beginning, they were only dust
Swirling clouds of atoms amid great stars
The two nameless beings worked in tandem
Give and take
Lights flickering as they came in and out
Of existence with quiet pops and groans.
Blackness soon gave way to brilliant strokes
Of painted
Galaxies spiralled and twirled, like ribbon
In a brisk summer breeze. Free and beautiful.
Suns blinked out, disappearing into the
Vast unknown.
Leaving only wisps of their former selves.
Ghosts of lights that remain there for aeons.
They watched together as the universe
Underwent
A great metamorphosis that they helped
To nudge along. A star here, a void there.
Pop pop pop
First Steps Of A New World
The air around them was humid, carrying with it a spark of excitement. Lagoons of bright blue water dotted the coastline for miles, creating shimmering mirages under the blistering sun. The two beings stood over a small fish struggling to walk on the sand.
“They are going to be something special.”
Bo beamed, a proud dad watching his child
Take a step
Onto the dark cool mud tentatively.
He waited patiently, holding his breath.
The young man who stood at a huge stature
Crouched to them.
His arms held wide, guiding his creation.
Urging them to his embrace with firm words.
But as quick as this something new began
It ended
The creature gasped for air it could not breathe
Before finally falling silent. Dead.
Lorelai with an expression so soft
Scooped them up
Their body finding a home in her arms
Held tightly, a mom comforting her child.
“They are already special.”
Crumbling Ruins Of Great Empires
Vines consumed what was left of the great temple. Nothing resided there anymore save for a small family of emaciated mice who lived in Athena’s arms. The sunlight was dulled in here, obscured by decades of plant growth, leaving the once divine statues shrouded in shadow.
“Why have you taken them?”
Lorelai's brown hair floated in the breeze,
Fluttering.
She walked through this tomb with a ginger step,
Like she was not the one to cause such loss.
She could not meet her friend's mistrusting gaze
Too ashamed.
He didn’t see how her false smile crumbled to grief,
Too lost in his own desperate madness.
He only saw what he had lost to time.
So consumed
By the death of his pure precious creations
To know that they were kept whole, somewhere safe.
He did not know that she vowed to treasure
Each slight soul
That he made. To protect them and love them
With all she had, for all eternity.
She kneeled before the gods, her sorrow still.
Her head bowed
She spoke softly as to respect the void,
Words carried away by the endless breeze
“All things must end.”
It Made You A Stranger
Bo’s hands ached with the strain of his work. It had been weeks since he had last emerged from his sanctuary on the Maine coast. Rage pooled through the log walls like mould, festering, building.
“You are a plague, a malice upon everything I have created.”
He endeavoured to forge something unique
Unheard of
Just to spite the jealous woman that had
Stolen from his arms since their beginnings.
Not another soul would be lost to her
Not one more
Lorelai's power would be meaningless
To the everlasting life he would make.
And yet nothing Bo did had succeeded,
It all failed.
All he breathed life into, try as he might,
Was always cursed with a day to die
Ruined carvings cluttered around his feet,
Abandoned.
Each was picked up and lovingly arranged
On various shelves with a gentle touch
Hate laced his words like a deadly venom.
Striking out,
He refused to meet her bright copper eyes
He turned his back on her, she knew the truth.
“I am just the same as you.”
Until The Very End
The wind screamed in his ear as he ran through the storm. Blood stained the air with the scent of iron. Blackness sealed him into the vast forest, trapping the ancient carpenter in a maze of his own design, a path of dead flowers carved through the trees guided him through.
“It is okay to be scared.”
The bundle was so small in her embrace,
Gravely tiny.
She shielded her from the cold and the wind.
Though it was of no use now, death had come.
The storm was tranquil around her, almost
Watching them.
Lorelai's lips pressed to her cold forehead,
Dark tears spilling for the life that had been.
She was a child, barely older than eight.
Far too young,
She had no chance of surviving alone
But she was not on her own anymore.
Bo was too late to save that little life,
He failed her.
And yet as he watched his other comfort
The child, he could not hate her, not at all.
She hummed a melody under her breath
She crooned for
So many ears that would never hear her
Lorelai sang for all the souls she kept
“I will be right here beside you.”
Birth Of A Dying Flower
Long stalks of grass bent in the gentle breeze, rippling as if they were ripples in an ocean of jade. Clouds of pollen bloomed around the lone figure in the field, her smile dazzling bright amongst a circle of browning, dying grass.
Wwwwwhhhhoooooshhhh
Flowers always died around Lorelai.
Withering
Away at her feet like they could not stand
To be caressed by her reaping touches.
She would never admit it broke her heart
To watch them
Curl up to die. But she still found herself
In this calm field, surrounded by flowers.
Her the skirts of her dress pooled around her
Like silk waves.
She held a wilted petal with fond care
To inhale the earthy scent it carried
A ribbon of pristine green caught her eye.
Curious,
She reached for it, knowing it would wither,
But instead, the bulb bloomed before her eyes.
Petals of deep purple unfurled outwards
Revealing
Seeds that glowed like vivid stars in dark skies,
Silvery threads of pollen blew away.
“A flower made for death.”
Home
The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden hue over the lone figure in the isolated cabin. A loon called out somewhere in the distance, briefly interrupting his monotonous sanding before he seemed to come back to himself and resumed. A creak in the floorboards behind him made Bo abandon his work entirely.
“You’re here.”
The quiet that fell was almost haunting
As he turned.
At last facing Lorelai, his heart lurched
With both deep fear and a profound sadness
In her delicate hands, she cupped something.
Bo had hoped
She had found his gift. He hoped she loved it
But he was scared too, that she would hate it
She should have despised him, he knew that, but
How could she?
Lorelai smiled softly at Bo through tears
Revealing the rare flower on her palms.
The petals had not wilted, the colour
Remained bright,
Indeed it positively glowed now that
it was safely blooming in her soft touch.
Shining copper met blue wrapped in dark gold,
She looked up
To meet his heartbroken, guilt-ridden gaze
With nothing but love and joy in her own.
As Bo cautiously cupped her hands in his,
A spark burst.
They collided once more, their souls joining
Together, as they were destined to do.
“I always have been.”

Monster Mash
A massive crossover between iconic monster from popular culture.
Most commonly found in a setting where the heroes live in a world where this creatures existed and may be part of a Crossover Cosmology, especially if they themselves are supernatural. The creatures, rather than becoming shut-ins who never leave their designated niche or dark corner of the world... they actually socialize. Vampires and werewolves, usually antagonists, agree to keep up a mutual hidden existence against humans. Fairies and ghosts work together to scare local homeowners. And the wizards work with all of them to save both worlds.
Is not really necesary it had to involve terror of any type.
Examples:
The Monster Squad: The movie has Count Dracula attempting to raise an army of darkness with the assistance of Frankenstein's Monster, a werewolf, a mummy, and a gill-man.
Goosebumps (2015): The movie and it's sequel had monsters from the titular books that they were releashed.
Hotel Transylvania: The main characters are Dracula and his daughter; their friends and guests include a mummy, a werewolf, Frankenstein, witches, an invisible man, a blob, and more. Justified by the title setting being, well, a hotel for monsters.
Nightmare Before Christmas: The citizens of Halloween Town include living skeletons, ghosts, zombies, witches, vampires, a werewolf, a devil, a monster clown and a mad scientist with his stitched-together creation, along with many original monsters.
Monsters vs Aliens (2009): The movie includes versions of the Fifty-Foot Woman, the Fly, the Blob, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Mothra are gathered together to kick alien butts. The Invisible Man also used to be a member of the team.
Castlevania: This video game saga, practically runs on this trope, with demons and mythical monsters thrown in for extra variety. Hell, even Cthulhu makes an apperance, as does Leatherface in Order of Ecclesia.
One Piece: The Thriller Bark Arc has a mansion filled with Zombies that do double duty as frankenstein's monsters, an invisible man, a ghost girl who controls ghosts instead of being one, an invisible mix and match critter, a mad scientist, and their leader who bears a striking resemblance to a vampire and has a special ability that renders its targets unable to touch sunlight without burning up.
Ed, Edd n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw: Ed, after watching too many horror movies, hallucinates seeing the cul-de-sac kids as monsters of a different varienty, as witches, aliens, vampiresses, gorgons, a spider monster, etc.

why do so many bsd fans see characters black and white when bsd is morally gray? 😭
They are on the younger side. Modern media, particularly anime, which more often than not is shounen, tends to present characters as black or white, even when there is an attempt at gray morality the contrast is pretty noticeable. Modern purity culture that swept across the more mature fandoms to the point where even devilman crybaby fans were pushing for problematic things to be removed from the fandom.
Basically we have moved towards a very intellectually lazy period when it comes to the creation of and consumption of media. People try to feel important by attaching militant activism to fiction uncaring of whether or not their actions are harming real people. There is a lack of desire to meet in the middle and understand the other person's perspective and instead a need to insist why your own opinion is better by using big words that have lost all meaning with their overuse.
I remember when Black Lagoon was only available online at a time when people mostly relied on television broadcast for shows. And it was a very complex story with a very dark grey to black morality scale about a heroic man's spiral into darkness and it had some of the most introspective pieces because there were a lot of problematic things like slurs and racism in it. And it made sense for these criminals and scum of the earth to use such language (always presented in a way that was supposed to be fucked up). But when it was aired on television suddenly the kids started consuming it and everyone took it at face value and started adopting the extremely toxic behaviour of the characters cause they thought it was cool and edgy. Hell the reason Lolita is in such a problematic place in modern culture is because it got taken to the extreme in both directions by people.

The Demon (vol. 1) #11, August 1973. Cover by Jack Kirby and Mike Royer.
During this book’s all-too brief run, Kirby managed to have Etrigan the Demon go up against many of the classic horror monsters (given Kirby’s own wonderful spin on them).
This issue, obviously, has Etrigan encountering the Frankenstein-like Baron Von Evilstein (I freakin’ love that name!) and his monstrous creation. A nice twist is that the monster is actually quite sympathetic and heroic.
There were also analogues of the Creature From the Black Lagoon, the Wolfman, the Phantom of the Opera, as well as the usual assorted witches, warlocks, demons and devils. Kirby never got around to having Etrigan fight a vampire. but he used one earlier during his run on Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen.
