organizing shampoo bars
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Organizing my shampoo and conditioner bars along with my sanitary pads.
I used a cardboard box, covered with leftover cloth that I sewed by hand.
I am far from perfect zero waste, couldn't adapt to menstrual cups or O.B. or menstrual panties.
However, not being perfect doesn't stop me from trying the best I can in all the rest.

A while back I posted about the overabundance of mid-2oth century costume jewelry I have inherited. One response to that post was a suggestion that I make it into hangable wall art with a frame and pieces fastened to an attractive background (such as black velvet).
I am definitely going to do that, as soon as I can get my hands on some shadow boxes. The other issue, though was a few nicer pieces, such as the matched set of jade earrings and cufflinks that my parents gave each other for their wedding.
Tumblr media
They're too nice to mix in with costume jewelry, so I'm going to get the earrings remade into pendants, and then keep one for myself and send the other to my sil. It can be a memento of my mother. The cufflinks could go to my brother and my son - if I can figure out a way to repurpose them that they would actually like.

Light Rail Selected for New York’s Interborough Express Project
Written by Marybeth Luczak
The 14-mile Interborough Express would connect the Brooklyn and Queens communities to 17 MTA New York City Subway lines and MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). It would use existing right-of-way of the Bay Ridge Branch freight line—owned by LIRR and operated by New York & Atlantic—and CSX’s Fremont Secondary line.
The MTA’s proposed Interborough Express project will move forward using light rail to provide service from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to Jackson Heights, Queens, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul reported during her 2023 State of the State address on Jan. 10.
Gov. Hochul first announced plans for the 14-mile Interborough Express in her State of the State on Jan. 5, 2022. She and MTA on Jan. 20, 2022 released an interim report on the proposed service, which would connect the Brooklyn and Queens communities to 17 MTA New York City Transit subway lines and MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). It would use the existing right-of-way of the Bay Ridge Branch freight line—owned by LIRR and run by New York & Atlantic—and CSX’s Fremont Secondary line, and operate with light rail; “conventional rail” (FRA-compliant electric multiple units); or Bus Rapid Transit.
Drawing from conclusions in MTA’s newly released Planning and Environmental Linkages study (download), the transit agency determined the “most efficient” mode of transportation (light rail), created a list of preliminary stations (see map above), and conducted other planning and engineering analyses to advance the project, the transit agency reported on Jan. 10.

Fancy Hot Chocolate Hacks
Cheap extracts.
That's it. Really.
Instead of spending $10 on a box that only has 6 pouches (yes, I am bitter about inflation!) buy the biggest, bog-standard generic multi-pack you can afford. (I picked up a box of 50 packets of Swiss Miss for $7 at Costco. Your mileage may vary.) Then head to the baking aisle.
You only need about 1/8 tsp of extract per mug of cocoa, so a standard 2 oz bottle goes a long way.
The most common flavors you can find at most groceries are:
Vanilla
Almond
Orange
Lemon
Strawberry
Coconut
Cinnamon
Peppermint/Mint
Pretty much everything but the cinnamon or mint will get an amazing flavor boost if you also add anywhere from a few drops up to 1/8 tsp almond extract. Seriously. It's magic.
Flavor combination recommendations:
1/8 tsp each Vanilla and Almond - tastes like a better version of the Hazelnut packets. Try adding a tiny pinch of salt, too.
1/8 tsp Orange - tastes like those seasonal slam-ball Chocolate Oranges
1/8 tsp Strawberry and a couple drops each of Almond and Vanilla - strawberry shortcake chocolate and it is so good
1/8 tsp each Orange and Almond with a few drops of vanilla - once more, so very very good. Add a couple extra oz of hot water/milk, because the flavors will be a little strong
1/8 tsp coconut with a few drops of vanilla - tastes like a chocolate macaroon
1/8 tsp cinnamon - way better than peppermint, which seems to have an unexpected chemical aftertaste
Salted Caramel Substitutes worth trying:
2 tsp honey, 1/8 tsp almond extract, pinch of salt - add an extra 2 oz of water when mixing this up or it'll be too sweet
1-2 tsp maple syrup, 1/8 tsp vanilla, 2-3 drops almond, pinch of salt - again, add a little extra water
Any caramel syrup (or even baking chips) you have on hand + a pinch of salt
So you're feeling fancy?
The Internet has a world of extract flavors beyond the grocery store standards. Good hot chocolate mix-ins include:
Caramel (if you don't want to bother with sugary syrups)
Mango (yes, really! This also tastes nice with a little bit of coconut extract added in)
Pistachio (plus some almond. trust me!)
Cherry (once more, also try adding some vanilla and/or almond)
Blueberry (it's like those chocolate covered blueberries at the check out aisle. Once more, try also adding a little vanilla and/or almond to taste)
Three more cheap, easy hacks:
Brew a cup of your favorite mint tea then mix in a packet of hot cocoa powder. This will still taste better than most peppermint extracts.
Brew a cup of coffee then mix in a packet of hot cocoa powder. Congrats. Now you have a mocha. Try adding some vanilla or almond extract.
Add 1 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice. This is good on its own, but you can also use it as the base for a passable PSL. Start with a brewed cup of coffee, a packet of hot cocoa, and some pumpkin pie spice. Add your vanilla and almond extracts, then dilute the whole mess with your favorite type of milk. If you like it sweeter, add a second packet of hot cocoa mix.

Rec en transformació (“Rec in transformation”) by photographer Marc Vila, virtual exhibition on Museu de la Pell d’Igualada i Comarcal de l’Anoia (more photos in the link).
I have been lucky to live in first person the transformation of the Rec district, to see the tanneries where it looked like time had stopped since they shut down, and the transformation of these empty spaces into spaces full of life, working as a photographer for Rec.0 and also on a personal level collaborating with La Bastida del Rec.
Rec is an industrial district of the city of Igualada (Central Catalonia). Most of its buildings date back to the industrial revolution and were used as tanneries and factories.
Over the last few decades, several institutions and local entities, academics, neighbours and activists have promoted the district’s rediscovery and made citizens aware of the need to protect extremely valuable architectural heritage that explains, like no other, the outstanding past and present of an enterprising city. Since then, the unceasing recovery of the heritage of old, unused factories has begun to fill them with life through new activities.

hello~ I am returning to tumblr, the place of my youth, after a good few years away. this feels like a homecoming in a weird way because tumblr had such a big impact on myself and my identity growing up, and honestly I haven't had a place I could explore my thoughts in the same way in awhile. but my dash has become quite dead while I was gone so I'm looking for new mutuals/people to follow.
(also, if we've been mutuals and you're still here and you see this, please feel free to say hey!)
so let me (re-)introduce myself—my name is mikayla or mik (she/they is cool), and I am 28 years old and a public librarian + union steward in my daily life. I'm bi and currently living with my sweet partner of three-and-a-half years. we have two cats that I deeply adore, named snickers and lorelei. snickers is a big, beautiful former cat beauty pageant runner-up and lorelei is a tiny gal who was rescued from the streets as a teen mom. caring for them gives me so much purpose in my life and I don't know where I'd be without them! anyways, let me pay the cat tax:

(left: lorelei, right: snickers—in a rare moment of peace and camaraderie!)
I deal with chronic fatigue and other issues from an autoimmune thyroid disorder (Hashimoto's) and was recently diagnosed with anxiety/persistent depression/ADHD, which I mention here not because I think anyone wanted my entire medical history but because I hope to write about my experiences and possibly connect with others living with chronic illness, mental health struggles, and/or neurodiversity, as well.
current interests under the cut! if you're into any of the same things, please feel free to reach out / follow! I'd love to meet some new moots/friends :~)
some of my current interests include: cross-stitch/embroidery, latch hook rug-making, creative reuse art, art journaling, cats, libraries, dollhouse miniatures, zumba fitness, union organizing, socialism/communism, thrifting and antique/vintage collecting, interior design and organization, cryptids, folk art, graphic novels, tattoos (I currently have 19), podcasts & audiobooks, dungeons & dragons, country line dancing (I went to one queer country dance party and am now obsessed lol)

Minimal Waste People!!! I Got Questions!!!
So this weekend my folks and I butchered some of our lambs and I want to use what I can of the leftovers but I need ideas (for the future as well). So far in progress/things saved are:
some stock from the leftover bones
using the knuckles to make some dice
making a decorative corset from the ribcage
tanning the hides for rough blankets/ren faire gear
Wondering if there's other things I could do to use more of the lamb than just the meat.

I love the idea of floating topographies. This ring is made from fused produce bags, reused from my own collection, and silver for the ring band. It was made to look like a little city.

im always trying to reuse my trash in my art, and ive collected like 100 of these tea pouches😩 so let's start using them shall we?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm making ATC's with them 🥰 (artist trading cards!!) and sending them to people! the bags are still functional as bags, so I'm thinking of adding something in there too. maybe some stickers, or what have you?
first time creating a set of items. it's actually a lot of fun to do the same things slightly different! I'd suggest you give it a go if you haven't yet 💘
thanks for looking at my art! I appreciate all the interaction with my posts, friends😊
