#creativity challenge

Well, I got some needed rest because my body forced me to. My back went out on Saturday night. Sunday and Monday I was stuck to a heating pad. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I even had to miss the book club meeting. 🎺 Wah. Wah. BUT I’m doing better now. I went for a 10km walk around a local lake. I can’t believe I’ve never been to this trail before. It was beautiful! So glad I finally went.
Altogether, I walked over 21,000 steps, today. 🎉
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a bit muddy in parts, but otherwise an easy trail walk. I used my urban poles, too. I also brought my portable chair but never used it. Other than having to stop to pee 3 times, I didn’t take much of a break. (Luckily, there are lots of washrooms around this lake.)
Anyway, I put together a 31 day “creativity challenge” for myself. I won’t be doing any of these things consecutively and I may do some of them more than once. I may even think of new things that aren’t on this list. It’s just a guide and a reminder for me to do at least one thing daily that sparks some “creativity” (and I mean that in the most generalized sense of the word.). Then I’ll write about it here to keep me accountable.
So today I did #21!
Tumblr media
Over the weekend, I attempted to learn about stop-motion animation. Man, you need a serious amount of patience for that. Personally, I just wanted to play with some PlayDoh (#27). 😜
This is what I came up with.
If you’re wondering what you just watched, it’s okay. I don’t know either. I tried. Just learning the app to make this thing was giving me a headache. I might try again sometime …or not. lol.
It may seem weird that I’m trying so hard to focus on creativity. It should just come naturally, right? Why force it? Well, I used to be someone who was creative but “life” happened and things just kept getting in the way. As a result, I was constantly putting it on the back burner. If you’re a creative person that doesn’t make the time to express yourself, you go a little lot crazy. I think that’s where anxiety and depression is birthed. In turn, creating becomes even more challenging. It’s a vicious cycle. I want to go back to that place where it was easy for me. I think I was a happier person then.
Nowadays, I can’t run the miles that I used to which kept my depression at bay. So now, I’m trying this. My hope is that if I try enough things on the daily, that something will excite me the way that running did. Then I can obsess on that. lol. So please join me on this experiment where you can follow along my journey in becoming a creative person again. This feels inspiring weird and awkward. Oh well. Story of my life.
At the moment, I’m feeling exhausted (from overthinking) so it’s time for tea and my book.

Alphabet Superset Week 01 - A is for "African Wild Dogs"
My choice for this challenge is Mammals which could cause a form of worship. To me, AWD's are a very intenense family, babies eat first, and hunting is held to a vote and because of this, they have the highest successful hunt percentage within Africa, possibly the world. the pack often comes before ego, and this could be something to venerate to a pre-alloy world.
If any of that made sense
"Make something every week for 26 weeks, around 26 topics of your choice, each starting with a different letter of the alphabet.
It’s A to Z… with one little twist:
While the Topic changes weekly, everything else stays the same.
Your medium, style, output size, and theme are fixed. Your topics, A to Z, are free."

For this final week of the #LoveAndLGBTQ creativity challenge on Instagram, my entry is this bisexual popsicle. 💗💜💙
I thought about using the progress LGBTQ flag, but the bisexual flag is very dear to me. Even if I don’t think it represents me anymore, it felt like a safe space for almost half of my life.
I really enjoyed the challenge throughout this month. I tried to make simple designs that could look good on banners or shirts that I don’t plan to make.

Daughter made me a creativity challenge as I've been struggling to remember to post.
Yes it is for me to do but thought I'd make a slightly less chicken scratch version for anybody who also wants to participate.
It's not a daily thing but it can be if you'd like to. The theme is teacups and mugs 'cause that's what she's been fixated on doodling at home.
Write, draw, animate, sculpt, doodle, etc. The idea is to just create and have fun.
My first prompt is Dinosaur. So here's my t rex figuring out how to drink his tea.

NASA Inspires Your Crafty Creations for World Embroidery Day
It’s amazing what you can do with a little needle and thread! For #WorldEmbroideryDay, we asked what NASA imagery inspired you. You responded with a variety of embroidered creations, highlighting our different areas of study.
Here’s what we found:
Webb’s Carina Nebula
Tumblr media
Wendy Edwards, a project coordinator with Earth Science Data Systems at NASA, created this embroidered piece inspired by Webb’s Carina Nebula image. Captured in infrared light, this image revealed for the first time previously invisible areas of star birth. Credit: Wendy Edwards, NASA. Pattern credit: Clare Bray, Climbing Goat Designs
Wendy Edwards, a project coordinator with Earth Science Data Systems at NASA, first learned cross stitch in middle school where she had to pick rotating electives and cross stitch/embroidery was one of the options.  “When I look up to the stars and think about how incredibly, incomprehensibly big it is out there in the universe, I’m reminded that the universe isn’t ‘out there’ at all. We’re in it,” she said. Her latest piece focused on Webb’s image release of the Carina Nebula. The image showcased the telescope’s ability to peer through cosmic dust, shedding new light on how stars form.
Ocean Color Imagery: Exploring the North Caspian Sea
Tumblr media
Danielle Currie of Satellite Stitches created a piece inspired by the Caspian Sea, taken by NASA’s ocean color satellites. Credit: Danielle Currie/Satellite Stitches
Danielle Currie is an environmental professional who resides in New Brunswick, Canada. She began embroidering at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic as a hobby to take her mind off the stress of the unknown. Danielle’s piece is titled “46.69, 50.43,” named after the coordinates of the area of the northern Caspian Sea captured by LandSat8 in 2019.

Two Hubble Images of the Pillars of Creation, 1995 and 2015
Tumblr media
Melissa Cole of Star Stuff Stitching created an embroidery piece based on the Hubble image Pillars of Creation released in 1995. Credit: Melissa Cole, Star Stuff Stitching
Melissa Cole is an award-winning fiber artist from Philadelphia, PA, USA, inspired by the beauty and vastness of the universe. They began creating their own cross stitch patterns at 14, while living with their grandparents in rural Michigan, using colored pencils and graph paper.  The Pillars of Creation (Eagle Nebula, M16), released by the Hubble Telescope in 1995 when Melissa was just 11 years old, captured the imagination of a young person in a rural, religious setting, with limited access to science education.
Tumblr media
Lauren Wright Vartanian of the shop Neurons and Nebulas created this piece inspired by the Hubble Space Telescope’s 2015 25th anniversary re-capture of the Pillars of Creation. Credit:  Lauren Wright Vartanian, Neurons and Nebulas
Lauren Wright Vartanian of Guelph, Ontario Canada considers herself a huge space nerd. She’s a multidisciplinary artist who took up hand sewing after the birth of her daughter. She’s currently working on the illustrations for a science themed alphabet book, made entirely out of textile art. It is being published by Firefly Books and comes out in the fall of 2024. Lauren said she was enamored by the original Pillars image released by Hubble in 1995. When Hubble released a higher resolution capture in 2015, she fell in love even further! This is her tribute to those well-known images.
James Webb Telescope Captures Pillars of Creation
Tumblr media
Darci Lenker of Darci Lenker Art, created a rectangular version of Webb’s Pillars of Creation. Credit:  Darci Lenker of Darci Lenker Art
Darci Lenker of Norman, Oklahoma started embroidery in college more than 20 years ago, but mainly only used it as an embellishment for her other fiber works. In 2015, she started a daily embroidery project where she planned to do one one-inch circle of embroidery every day for a year.  She did a collection of miniature thread painted galaxies and nebulas for Science Museum Oklahoma in 2019. Lenker said she had previously embroidered the Hubble Telescope’s image of Pillars of Creation and was excited to see the new Webb Telescope image of the same thing. Lenker could not wait to stitch the same piece with bolder, more vivid colors.
Milky Way
Tumblr media
Darci Lenker of Darci Lenker Art was inspired by NASA’s imaging of the Milky Way Galaxy. Credit: Darci Lenker
In this piece, Lenker became inspired by the Milky Way Galaxy, which is organized into spiral arms of giant stars that illuminate interstellar gas and dust. The Sun is in a finger called the Orion Spur.
The Cosmic Microwave Background
Tumblr media
This image shows an embroidery design based on the cosmic microwave background, created by Jessica Campbell, who runs Astrostitches. Inside a tan wooden frame, a colorful oval is stitched onto a black background in shades of blue, green, yellow, and a little bit of red. Credit: Jessica Campbell/ Astrostitches
Jessica Campbell obtained her PhD in astrophysics from the University of Toronto studying interstellar dust and magnetic fields in the Milky Way Galaxy. Jessica promptly taught herself how to cross-stitch in March 2020 and has since enjoyed turning astronomical observations into realistic cross-stitches. Her piece was inspired by the cosmic microwave background, which displays the oldest light in the universe.

GISSTEMP: NASA’s Yearly Temperature Release
Tumblr media
Katy Mersmann, a NASA social media specialist, created this embroidered piece based on NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) global annual temperature record. Earth’s average surface temperature in 2020 tied with 2016 as the warmest year on record. Credit: Katy Mersmann, NASA
Katy Mersmann is a social media specialist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She started embroidering when she was in graduate school. Many of her pieces are inspired by her work as a communicator. With climate data in particular, she was inspired by the researchers who are doing the work to understand how the planet is changing. The GISTEMP piece above is based on a data visualization of 2020 global temperature anomalies, still currently tied for the warmest year on record.
In addition to embroidery, NASA continues to inspire art in all forms. Check out other creative takes with Landsat Crafts and the James Webb Space telescope public art gallery.

I love ur Lois so much!!! Lois has always reminded me of my mom and so seeing your version of Lois, one that faces similar uphill battle when it comes to work and how you can start sanding yourself down to try and get further, is amazing and touching. Can't wait to see more of this Lois, especially as she works up the ranks!
Tumblr media
Thank you! I think that part of Lois (becoming less of yourself in order to move ahead in an industry, especially as a woman [of color]) is so underappreciated and should be explored way more.

Just adding to my last post - here’s a couple more fun facts about metastatic breast cancer (MBC) that I’ve been asked about over the past few years:
Q: If the breast cancer spread to the bone, isn’t it now bone cancer?
A: This is a pretty common misconception and it does makes sense however, it’s still just breast cancer. What happened is that the cells have taken off from the original breast site, latched onto the bone and made a home there.
Q: How can your neck still be broken? Wouldn’t it have healed by now?
A: Unfortunately, the disease is still in there and will likely never heal. I have fractures at the C5 and C6 levels. The C6 is pretty bad resulting in over 50% loss of height. That’s why I got the hardware put in.
Q: When are you finished treatment?
A: Never. I’ll be on treatment for the rest of my life. If the treatment I’m on fails, I’ll be prescribed a new one.
Q: What’s your prognosis?
A: I’ve had varying answers. Ultimately, they don’t know at this time. I have resigned the fact that I have no control over this either. (But my goal was to make it to 50; see my kid graduate and go to college.)
Q: You still have hair?!
A: Yes, I do! Not all treatment/chemotherapy results in hair loss. My hair has thinned significantly over the past 2 years but I had a lot to begin with. When I was originally diagnosed, I had chemo and lost all my hair. Here’s a pic of me right after I shaved my head (Nov 10 2018).
Tumblr media
Q: I didn’t know there was more than one type of breast cancer. How many are there?
A: There are a lot of variables to this question and I can’t really answer because I would have to “math”. 😂 So, I’ll just tell you what I had even though it may be useless info to you unless you’re a fellow cancer patient/survivor/caregiver. Mixed ductal and lobular carcinoma (2 primary tumours). I also had ductal carcinoma in situ. (ER+ PR+ HER2 -) My cancer is very hormone driven: 8/8 Allred score. Grade 3. I also had one macrometastases in a sentinel lymph node.
Q: Why don’t you just remove your ovaries if your cancer is hormone driven?
A: Because it’s another surgery that I don’t want to have. Plus, there’s no evidence indicating that ovary removal will prolong my life.
Q: I have this friend that said that she was cured by taking orange essential oil, the eye of newt and eating 8 grapefruits a day. Why don’t you try that?
A: 😳🙄
I think that’s enough questions/answers for now. I could also write a book on all the questions I got regarding breast reconstruction too but I’ll leave that for another time. It brings up more miserable memories and the reason why I ultimately chose to go “flat”.
Anyway, today was a bit anticlimactic but I got what I needed to get done including a dentist appointment. For my “creative challenge” I chose #3 on my list: watching a Ted Talk. It was called: A Powerful Way to Unleash Your Natural Creativity presented by Tim Harford. He discusses a concept called “slow-motion multi-tasking”. Which is something I believe I’ve done for years but was constantly told that it was “bad” as you can never finish anything that way. (“Focus on one thing at a time, Sasha!”) In the talk, he goes on to mention Darwin publishing a book that took him over 40 years to write because he was working on several other projects simultaneously. He’d go back and forth focusing his time on each one whenever it suited him. So I think the take-away from this is that it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to finish something - do it anyway. As long as you’re enjoying the process, then what does it matter? Remove all time expectations and just keep going because you may end up with a masterpiece or some sort of discovery when you’re finished. ☺️
It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. ✈️

B for Bush Elephant
Week two of my Alphabet Superset
Everyone already knows a lot about Elephants, herds are lead by mothers and outside of immature children, there are no males in the herd. Elephants are loving mothers, and the whole herd helps in raising the children, even nursing from lactating aunties or sisters. If everyone is pitching in that raises those calves becoming adults.
They are pregnant for roughly two years, another adaptation for making sure baby elephants become grown up elephants, the longer the gestation the more developed the calf.
Because of this, I like to see this as a mother and two of her daughters bonded and close.

May Writing Challenge
Tumblr media
This May I want to get back into writing. I’m not at all consistent. I’m at a point where I don’t feel like I can work on bigger things, because I can’t guarantee myself to keep working on it in a week from now. So I will take this month as a training month to get back into the habit of writing. I will do this by writing (or trying to write) 200 words every day. Topic is irrelevant. How great my writing is that day is irrelevant. Just 200 words written down. A habit taking 21 days to form was debunked, it does take a lot longer, but 31 days are a start I would say. These are already 140 words, so 200 words every day are hopefully manageable. You're more than welcome to join me if you like 😊

It was not in fact their anniversary. Nya was giving him the stink eye for leaving his dirty laundry in her room, again.
For @sharksandjays challenge! (Apologies for a long post ahead, I dunno how best to present my thoughts ToT)
Idk if this has been done before but I like the idea of his powers being like, an inconvenience. When his thoughts are going a mile an hour, electricity just manifests around his body. If he manages to calm down, it goes away but if he doesn't well--- his outburst just overloads most electrical devices around him and boom, black out.
I like to think he's gotten better at not manifesting electricity accidentally. For the early days however, it would've been common. For its effects on others...
Tumblr media
Jay would be wary of it electrocuting normal people. But his team isn't exactly normal.
Cole would be the most unaffected by it. Though there could be times he'd get caught off guard, his affinity to the earth gives him a sort of immunity. This would allow him to be the rock that a young, anxious Jay would need, and keep him grounded in reality.
Nya, as the elemental master of water, would make Jay scared of thinking hard in front of her. Her code of conduct wouldn't allow Jay to simmer in his thoughts alone though, so she'd bolt towards him the moment electricity starts manifesting. Jay admires her for that, even though he's pretty sure it would hurt her. (It's later on that he realizes, it doesn't. Pure water, which I believe Nya can conjure, can't actually conduct electricity. The more you know I guess.)
Lightning round for the others: Lloyd, being the embodiment of 'energy is not created/destroyed but transferred/transformed' wouldn't be hurt either. But I think it would bounce off of him and hurt someone else when he's not thinking ToT. When using his ice powers, Zane could be immune too (except with the whole nindroid thing). As for Kai, he's not immune per say but Jay's anxiety ridden electricity, just like how it starts a forest fire, just sparks a protective streak in Kai you know?
TLDR: Jay's electricity has some cons. But thankfully, his friends have powers too.
