The Infernal Aves, or colloquially known as the Phoenix, are a small but varied group of highly specialized and adapted repot-avians.
This combustable creature has spawned countless myths and legends due to its unique pyro adaptation.
Their feathers are light yet hard, scale like, forming an almost impenetrable armor which protects them from their environment and also their burning adaptation. The Infernal Aves live exclusively along volcanic terrain. Without it they would be incapable of combustion. It is the combination of sediment/minerals from the environment and the combustible enzymes produced and secreted from it’s body that ignite the flaming bird  They also use the ambient heat of it’s environment to incubate a single egg that is buried and abandoned. This form of parenting, or lack there of, lead to the belief that the phoenix dies and is reborn from a single egg. This form of nesting is seen across all species.
While all Infernal Aves are fire capable each species has varying degrees of it.
Despite folklore phoenixes do not remain ablaze for extended periods of time, it is largely a last ditch escape effort. Or in some cases part of mating displays in males. While their bodies are relatively fire resistant it is not entirely, continued fires will ear away at its protective coating that covered their feathers.

Everyone knows the man, the moth, the legend!
Mothman is a cryptid from West Viginia, and I like to think he’s very floofy.

St George's monitor lizard
Tumblr media
It sports large scales on its neck resembling small horns, a threat display with its bright orange tongue, and vestigial wing-like skin extension that its juvenile form used for gliding. It also spits a venomous concoction onto the wounds of its prey, causing a painful burning sensation
The strange varanid and its record in oral traditions later perished in the ensuing conflicts of history. Thus the original source of the fire breathing legend is forever gone, engulfed in flames.

My infernal hound brings me coffee, always at the perfect temperature! ☕️🔥
The prompt definitely made me think more skulls and fire but, I wanted to try a more lighthearted idea.

Here is my sketch of Callisto- A.K.A. the constellation Ursa Major!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the myth goes, Callisto was a nymph in Artemis's sacred entourage of female hunters. There are many versions of this tale involving how she was tricked, who turned Callisto into a bear, how her son died, and how she died. In fact, some say the myth dates all the way back to prehistoric times.
Tumblr media
Callisto, Καλλιστώ, means "Most Beautiful" in greek. Artemis was called 'Artemis Kalliste' - Artemis the most beautiful. Many say this is how Callisto got her name. The ancient city of Arcadia was named after Arcas(Αρκάς), the little bear.

For fun, I based my sketch on Epiphany from Xena the Warrior Princess, who also has an animal son and a tragic story.

Well, that's my art and history rant! 🐍💕

another avatar movie, another creatuanary, another bunch of attempts redesigning the na'vi to "what if the na'vi conformed more closely to the anatomy of the rest of pandora's vertebrate-oids". played around with a few concepts

The Fire Phoenix is neither fire breather nor a phoenix, but rather a drake. It gets its name from it's flashy appearance. It’s body is speckled in bioluminescence and males grow large, impressive boney crests that are also pitted with light. These warm red lights, paired with it’s unique call can give the illusion of a combusting beast when in motion which lead some to believe it was a member of the infernal avians

Azathoth is a supreme outer god in the Lovecraft mythos. Also known as the Blind Dreamer and the Deep Dark (among many many other names), they are generally accepted to be a formless god of chaos. Now, 'formless' is hard to draw, but I had a bit of fun with the idea that they might resemble an organic black hole

Mineral creature
Tumblr media
they live in calm extraterrestrial pools saturated with minerals, the rest of their body is smooth Except for the rod on the head, so crystal growths start from there and it keeps using the two mantis-like arms to polish the mineral growth into a spear shape
