this is kind of a crack fic idea, hofas spoilers

reader is bryce’s human sibling who’s only a few years younger than her and is always willing to fight for midgard. bryce brings you with your parents when she opens the portal to prythian and sends you there for collateral. you meet the inner circle and after taking that magical language bean thing, the mating bond snaps between you and one of the inner circle members (probably azriel). you get to know each other before bryce comes back and you have to make the choice of picking between your mate who you just met in a land you don’t know or going home to your family.

Sjm’s writing in HOFAS

I enjoyed reading HOFAS like I had a fun time. But one critique I have outside of the story/plot- and this might be a stupid hot take about hofas and the cc series, but I literally hate how sjm over uses swear words in this series. Cursing in dialogue and prose is normal in new adult/adult novels, swearing can be effective and in some situations is needed.

Listen I’m not trying to nitpick, BUT the amount of times that characters say “fuck” fucker” “mother fucker” is so goofy 😭. Like it’s giving group of 13 year old boys learning they can swear when their parents aren’t around.

I feel like so many good lines were ruined and made corny because sjm put swears in them. I’m not referring to the use of swearing in exclamation or description(like “what the fuck!” Or “of my fucking god” or “I’m so fucking tired”) because these are common phrases.

What I’m talking about - and Here are just some examples of lines where sjm threw in a variation of “fuck” in dialogue or narration, and it made the line/moment in the story that could have good, become corny and cringey:

“That fucker” 🙄 cornyyyyy …that line could be easily removed, we already know from context that when Lidia flinched it’s because of her time with Pollux. As the reader we know Pollux is evil and dislike him. WE KNOW that Pollux is “that fucker” we don’t need ruhn’s monologue to tell us that.

This line just makes me sad 😭like it sounds so juvenile, some shit someone would say on a twitch stream. “and I’m your motherfucking executioner”

That line would so much cleaner and chilling if Sjm wrote “…I’m queen, I’m judge, jury…and your executioner”

Again “I cut that fucker into pieces” 🫨golly gee I’m shaking in my boots. Sjm pls I’m begging you stop 😭this line is so unserious. You could have simply written “I cut him into pieces for what he did to Danika” and the line would hold more weight but the over use of “fucker” just looses its meaning by this point and the dialogue sounds STUPID.

Anyway’s does anyone else agree? or get what I’m saying? Or have more examples they’d like to add?

(Again I have no issue with swearing or curse words, but I feel like the overuse of swear words in writing/adding swears in dialogue/prose when it’s not needed cheapens the writing and makes dialogue and key points less effective.)

Are the Illyrians a Retired Prototype of the Angels from Crescent City?

Illyrians are notorious throughout Prythian, because they are only found in Illyria and because of their physical appearance, most notably their bat-like wings. While bats are commonly believed to be nocturnal (most active at night), they are actually crepuscular (most active at dawn/dusk).

Why is this important? This creates a link between the Illyrians and the Dusk Court, the Court that has been destroyed for all purposes and now serves as a Prison, but has some strange link to CC. We know this because the Asteri have a literal room called Dusk's truth, that mentions an island (the Prison) in another world (Prythian) where the fae in CC came from. The floor in the inner chamber of the Prison also has an eight-pointed star engraved into it, the symbol of the Starborn fae in CC.

Their geographic spread is also a little strange. The people of the Dawn Court and Drakon's people have the same feathered wings, so their population spread sometime in the past, and many other species are mentioned to be found throughout the world, but Illyrians, for some reason, stick to their mountains.

The Illyrians also have Ramiel, which they believe to be a sacred mountain and is essentially a giant teleportation machine. They also have stories of their greatest warrior protecting the pass, and stopping people from getting to the top, where the a strange black stone is, so we know it served an important at some point in history.

It is possible that Ramiel somehow acted as a portal, or at least a small window, that the Asteri could control and used to send the Illyrians, soldiers they had created for conquest, into Prythian, since they obviously had some issue with the people of Dusk.

If I remember correctly, CC mentions that the Starborn Queen Theia, who is presumably from the Dusk Court, created problems for the Asteri, so it is possible that in return they made Illyrians to fight for them in Prythian, but when Theia somehow removed their access to Prythian, the Illyrians were left behind, with protecting Ramiel programmed into their brains, and the Asteri created new and improved soldiers for Migard, who were more obedient and had better healing.
