Episode 3: GOOD Grief! (we finally have a good episode on our hands)

To all those of you keen enough to have come back for another segment of ‘what hasn’t already been said: TSP’, as opposed to have just been scrolling when you see this - welcome back! (Scrollers you too <3)

To anyone who’s seeing this for the first time: what this is a list of observations, jokes, reactions and criticism which occur to me upon a rewatch. I wait every week until Saturday to do this so that I have had my fill of scrolling through the tag and aggregating what has already been said. I tried doing a whole spoof (here where I gave up 10% in) but tbh a) I don’t know the history well enough b) it’s more time consuming than I thought and c) this series is just not as funny or as crazy as TWQ, so it’s untenable. Having said that: This is not a hatepost. I’m not hatewatching this series and nitpicking on purpose but expressing my honest views and trying to find the good in it as well as the bad.

Without further ado...

First Scenes: 

LMAO the way Wolsey suggests they break their alliance with Spain is freaking hilarious because the actor delivers the lines as if he were a high school girl making a personal attack by suggesting the prom change its theme to 70s disco to the chagrin of the peppy up-and-coming rival.

Also @ Henry VIII looking like the peppy up-and-comer’s bff and shy stan with that pencil bite and small smirk when Catherine loses her cool against Wolsey.

I’m sorry... who is Henry married to again?

Also what is Margaret Pole doing at the council meeting?? I’m not saying I don’t like it.

Margaret Pole warning against certain repetitive thinking creating madness :(((

Attempted Naked Twister:

Oh Catherine, what is with you and all the other STARZ protagonists and that weird politcky bedroom talk? Who actually finds this sexy?

‘Catherine you are unnatural’ ooof that line delivery was somehow haunting.

Was the whole ‘I can’t be rushed you are off-putting with your overpowering’ a callback to Arthur and Catherine? Apparently there’s another writer for this episode so I won’t put all subtly past them. 

Scotland:

‘Shitey men’ asdkjashd

Look I’m tired of all this ‘my children won’t be safe’ line getting repeated. Look mate, murder of royal infants and children was not exactly a common occurence, even in cases of deposition. The Princes in the Tower are an exception to this but a very infamous case for that reason. Child murder was extremely taboo. In situations like this with an infant kid, no one is going to bother murdering the babies and taking their thrones, the lords will just vie for power and make themselves de facto rulers and oust the queen. It’s not a question of safety but a question of holding power. Stop giving all women characters perma mummy brains.

Maggie being all caring:

‘Barnaby’ *scoffs* ‘Such an English name’ - OH MAN 0_0 is Catherine mocking them for trying to adapt ? Like I know it’s meant to show her envy for Lina, but it’s coming out all messed up.

Our girl Maggie’s smile screams I’m beating your ass in chess.

Anyhow this is the least histrionic we’ve seen Catherine so far.

Chaplain vs Catherine:

I’m interested how Catherine will feel at Stafford’s execution given that I have noticed this show build up to a friendship between them.

Why is everyone laughing at the whole ‘will you delight us with new schemes’ line was not that funny?

LMAO at Thomas Boleyn’s attempted brown-nosing. 

You know what? Ruairi is a decent actor. When he says ‘so you admit it? you lost the child because you tried to be a man?” the actor conveys Henry’s troubled mind, lowkey scare towards Catherine and bewilderment all in one. The way his eyes do not move but just widen emotionlessly also gives this sense that he is being manipulated (which I guess they are going for with Wolsey). Then the whole choir music in the background.. I don’t know.. I’m liking this, it’s creating a vibe of a king of haunted and increasingly paranoid Henry. I’m sure they are going for that, so good.

Ursula Pole and Mama:

Maggie Pole say ‘riches don’t keep you safe’ with tears in her eyes :’(. Please tell me how this is not her thinking on her parents and granddad Warwick and what befell them ;’(.

I find Ursula refreshing actually, don’t get those types of heroines often. But they are making her similar to a gold-digger, an exhalted marriage was first and foremost considered a thing of honour. Noblepeople wouldn’t speak in such mercenary terms regarding their marriages. 

Post Mary Defiance:

I love the ‘horse’ nickname from Brandon n’awwww

Also just realised what made TWQ so atmospheric - that wierd ‘oooo’ sound effect in the background when a character was being paranoid or worrying. They are using it during Henry’s ‘How is it that I have no sons?’ and it is just... so effective.

Catherine calling them ordinary children... she just keeps striking me as more and more classist. Like ok, I know every royal was... but still, I thought she was meant to see Lina as a friend and equal despite her race and status. To add the race element, this kind of rubs me the wrong way.

Also it is so clear by the end when Catherine states how the king is upset with her, she expects Maggie to ask her about it.. but she doesn’t lmao.

Back to Scotland until Sexy boy fencing:

I love me this soft boi. Angus <3 <3

I like how they address that some men don’t really like killing and that violence isn’t inherent in a man’s nature.

Oh man, are we supposed to look at Lina’s house and deplore the impoverished conditions? It would go for at least 3,000,000 pounds in today’s property market?

Is Catherine being particularly classist again with ‘Why u not becoming a butcher Wolsey, ey?’. 

Though I will admit the ‘but giving meat to the poor is also good’ was one of her only smart comebacks.

Just realised, Catherine’s pink dress pretty as it is, looks straight out of the 1570s... why?

Montage and After:

You guys are right, there is this weird longing between Henry and Wolsey lmao. It is actually insane.

So basically Catherine is officially depressed

OOOFF we have Stafford as regent instead of Catherine. (edit: I suppose it’s cause they go to France which they didn’t historically? Also if Stafford is at home then what is his son later doing in France, why would he be there without his father. This show didn’t think this through)

Meg Singing:

An impassionate speech is not too anachronistic. But despite the title of this post (what hasn’t been said) I will reiterate that 16th century and Medieval people’s problem wasn’t that they were ashamed of their grief and didn’t cry. In fact, crying was somewhat more socially acceptable then than it even is now! Even manly men like Arthur were written as crying in literature such as Malory’s Morte d’Arthur. Obviously you couldn’t go overboard, but in truth crying was indeed often too performative rather than hidden too much behind doors.

Pole and More UWUWU in France and after:

I LIKE THIS INTELLECTUAL FLIRTING

It’s nice to see a depiction of romantic feelings between mature and level-headed subjects.

God Mary Tudor is so beautiful in this scene jesus. and the music when she was being presented was also very beautiful.

Maggie Pole getting given ‘a modest income’ yeah... she was one of the wealthiest peers of her day.

Also Maggie’s lady cousin not lady aunt Frost!

‘shaking of the sheets’ lmaoooo

William Compton cracks the hell out of me. I love this guy. He is just so creepy and twisted yet super keen and friendly. ahaha He looks like a riot, I hope we see him more. lmao tiles.

Also this palace feels very anachronistic almost 18th century-ish.

I like the Louis and Mary sequence, it’s nice seeing him trying to make her feel less scared, but OMFG when he lay on that chair.. for one second I thought they were trying to kill him off already.

Scotland: ‘Love is an open doooooorrrrr’ + Last Scene:

I ship Meg and Douglas ahhhh this soft boi x strong woman match is everything Henry and Catherine could have been.

I wonder... why is Lina speaking in Spanish more than Catherine. hmmm Are they trying to foreshadow Lina’s eventual return home and how Catherine become a true englishwoman?

Conclusion:

7.5/10

I cannot in all fairness believe it. This was actually decent. I’ve given up on historical accuracy long ago so by this point I’m focusing more on how it stands as as drama. I mean, TWQ was also a flop when it came to grasping the complex issues of that era but why do I feel compelled to rewatch it every year? Because it had atmosphere when it came to acting, music, certain aesthetics (though the costumes let me down often). It felt adequately gothic and dark, yet bright and jewel-lish when it had to be, sometimes both at the same time. Some one-liners were also memorable etc...

So far TSP 2 did not have any of this. Everything felt way too off and anachronistic. But not even consistently anachronistic. The music was also often very meh (though I just noted the absence of the spanish stringy theme that kept playing in season 1 - I guess I understand why), the dialogue very clichéd (‘alright lads let’s throw in the words: king, crown, power, fight, battle + other buzzwords and we have ourselves Shakespeare’) and so on... but I saw a change in this episode and I couldn’t initially point out what it was.

Upon rewatch, I identified some of the improvements (noted above) but above all: The producer was different! Boy does it show. Unfortunately, I think she is only for this one episode which really sucks. Come back! There is more chemistry between the couples, less predictable interactions, pervy Compton, cinnamonroll Douglas, better music, more scenic shots (e.g Douglas and Margaret in church) e.t.c. I hope it will match the rest of the STARZ productions in getting better towards the end.

Look it’s no masterpiece. But I’ll give credit where it’s due because at least this time it didn’t leave me feeling wanting and unsatisfied (if that makes sense).

Son And Daughter (John Deacon x Reader, SMUT! Angst!)

Part 8 of The Queen Repertoire

Sometimes I truly hated growing up in 60's England. Sure The Beatles were big and making all of us kids feel free, but my mother just simply didn't approve of 'such nonsense'.

For most of my childhood my mother ran the house and my life with an iron thumb, and it was just us a lot since dad was a soldier and was away on base a lot. As a kid I was very energetic and always wanting to play and do things that my mother thought were unladylike like, as she expected me to host tea parties and play with dolls. I was forced into dresses I hated (they itched and chafed like a motherfucker), and was encouraged to act like a lady even in school. More importantly I was told to steer clear of boys, especially those she felt were below her standards. So you can imagine her reaction when I told her happily and excitedly that I made a new friend...a boy in my class named John Richard Deacon.

“And who said you could be friends with this boy?” she sneered the word.

“I like him,” I said. “And he likes me.”

“You need to make friends with girls and forget about this John.” She snapped at me.

“None of the girls their like me, nor do I like them. They are all so ghastly and boring,” I whined disgustedly. “John is fun and nice. He even showed me how to play football, and said I can go to his house and listen to The Beatles on his record player.”

My mother's hand was suddenly flying across my face. “I want you to be a woman, Y/N Y/L/N. How are you ever going to learn if you continue to act like a boy?” She spat at me. It was a speech she'd given time and time again.

She forbade me from hanging out with John, going as far as picking me up from school and schedule play dates with some of the aforementioned girls. I hated it.

Things became more strict once I grew older. At thirteen, my mother went ballistic when she walked into my room (she'd been out running errands so I snuck John into my room) and found John and I snogging. It was my first kiss. We sprang apart when she barged in but she saw enough. She came over and dragged John out of the room and down the stairs. She threw him out and screamed at him to stay away from me. She slammed the door and turned to me. By then I was crying. She slapped me across the face and pushed me against the wall.

“I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO STAY AWAY FROM THAT BOY?!” she screamed at me.

“We're in love,” I muttered.

“WHAT?!”

“We're in love, mother,” I cried out. “We fell in love three years ago, but we were too afraid to say anything until today. He is my boyfriend, now...a-and I am his girlfriend.”

She screamed at me some more and grounded me indefinitely.

Four years passed and I was working on my A-Levels. Everyone at school pretty much knew what they wanted to do and some even started at Uni, rather than complete A-Levels. I, on the other hand had to do what mother wanted me to do. I loved art, and photography, but mother didn't.

One day my counselor approached me and asked if I had applied to the art school I wanted to go to in London. When I told her I hadn't she asked why. I explained everything to her. She sighed and said she'd seen my work and thought I had a real chance to get into the school and that I shouldn't let anyone hold me back from that chance.

“But mother...”

“We can take care of everything here,” said the counselor. “You can even put the school's address on the application and have everything sent here.”

I did and I got in.

I was so happy, and John was ecstatic for me.

John was going to study electrical engineering at Imperial College and we immediately started making arrangements. We found a relatively cheap flat, and arranged a day to move in.

All was going well until...

“I was cleaning your room today,” mother said during dinner. “And I couldn't help but notice an acceptance letter tucked away in one of your drawers.”

“I'm going to the School of Art & Design in London,” I said. “Ms. Tiptly helped me get in.”

“That counselor who's always putting her nose where it doesn't belong?” mother asked.

“She's done wonders for me,” I said.

“She's filled your head with nonsense,” mother said. “Now you are going to call that school and tell them there was a mistake and that you won't be going. Then you're going to tell that no good counselor to mind her own business.”

“No,” I snapped at her. “I'm not doing any of that. The arrangements have already been made. I've even rented a flat.”

“You what?!” she exclaimed.

“John and I are leaving in the summer,” I said.

“Oh that little rotter again,” she said. “When are you going to get it in your head not to waste your life on that no good rat?”

“Never,” I said. “Because he's not a no good rat. And the years I've spent with him were not wasted. Nor will the years that come.”

“You know all these years I've wanted nothing more than for you to grow into a proper woman. A RESPECTABLE woman! Now I see that'll never be.”

“Mother?”

“You're no woman. You're trash, and I am not your mother.”

I got up and left. I went down to John's house where later that night I laid crying in his bed. John held me, and kissed me.

“I love you and only you,” he whispered. “And I will love no other for the rest of my life.”

I sniffed back tears and brought my lips to his. John kissed me back. His hair was a little longer than it used to be so now it was easier for me to run my fingers through it. We usually wouldn't let things go further than that but on that night we found we wanted each other more than anything. So after a few minutes of kissing and touching we laid back on his bed, having rid each other of clothing. John was small and slight for a man his age but that by no means applied to his length. I cried out and clung to him as he slowly pushed in.

“I'm sorry, love,” John whispered. “I promise...*moans*... the world may try to hurt you but I never will.”

Eventually, my body grew use to him, and the pain subsided to the most brilliant feeling. John was gentle with me, thrusting slowly until we were both fired up. He moved a little faster then and harder. Our bodies moved together perfectly. After what felt like forever and an eon I tightened around him and bit back what would have been a really loud moan. John groaned and twitched inside me a moment later.

We laid there in bliss for the remainder of the night.

A month or so later I found out I was pregnant. John froze in shock when I told him, but he told me we would be alright and that we would just have to add a crib to the list of furnishings we needed to shop around for for our new flat.

We moved in that summer and were excited about our future. Then just as I reached the seventh month mark in my pregnancy I felt a stabbing pain. I'd been studying and when the pain started I looked down. Blood poured out of me. I dialed 999 and an ambulance rushed me to the hospital. John was still in school and promptly ran out of his class when the police told him what happened.

Our baby was gone, having passed inside me. I was broken by it, and couldn't find it in me to do anything for months after. Mother would call me and said it was karma punishing me for being a rotten daughter to her. That I shouldn't be surprised if it happened again. She then would say we could change that if I came home and forgot it all. Said that our neighbor's son was now back from Vietnam and thought we would be perfect together. I'd hang up on her without a word.

I eventually went back to school. Teachers were understandable, thank God, and let me do extra credit work to make up my absences. John wound up befriending a lad he met at the disco we'd gone to for an overdue date night. The lad's eyes grew even wider than I thought they could (he had big baby blues) when John said he played the bass guitar. He immediately asked him if he'd be willing to audition for his band. John did.

Years passed. Queen became big and started work on their fourth album. I was home alone setting up a new piece of furniture we were going to need when the phone rang.

“Hello?” I answered.

“Hello darling,” greeted my mother whom I hadn't heard from since my miscarriage.

“Hello, mother,” I said nervously.

“How have you been?” Alarm bells rang in my head and I knew better than to be fooled by her false positivity. I went along with it though.

“Fine,” I said. “Just doing a bit of housework.”

“Oh? Really,” she said slightly taken aback.

I took two steps to the right towards the record player. I plucked a record from our collection and readied it.

“Yes I'm just putting a new piece of furniture together,” I said.

“Why doesn't John do that?” she asked. “After all it's men's work.”

“John's busy,” I said. “He and his band are working on a new album.”

“Oh so he's still wasting his life on that is he?” I rolled my eyes.

“He's not wasting his life,” I said. “He's living it. There's a difference.”

“Well whatever,” she sneered. “I was checking in to see if you were free this weekend?”

“Why?”

“Well Ida's son has just moved back and he's been asking about you,” she said. Ida was our aforementioned neighbor. I groaned.

“Mother, no,” I said. “That's not happening. Please let it go already!”

“I'm only trying to help you!” she exclaimed. “After all these years I'm just trying to give you a better life.”

“I'm living the best life, mother,” I said. “Right here with John.”

“Y/N Y/L/N!”

“IT'S Y/N DEACON NOW!” I snapped.

“WHAT?!”

“John and I married a few months ago,” I said.

“HOW DARE YOU!”

“No, mother, how dare you!” I snapped at her. “I am tired of you trying to control everything. Christ, haven't you ever wondered why I don't call you anymore? You're a cancer, mother and I don't need or want you anywhere in my life or in my husbands life. And I can't go next weekend or ever for that matter for I am going to be busy raising my child.”

I placed my hand on my overly large stomach. Mother had caused the baby to kick up a fuss. “First you marry a filthy hippy lad, then you stupidly get yourself pregnant? What the devil has gotten into you?”

“John has...almost every night,” I said. “Hence the baby.”

I placed the phone down and put on the record putting the needle down where I knew a certain song would begin. I could hear my mother screaming but paid her no mine and let the song play out while I continued to work on my baby's crib.

I smiled and made a promise to myself that if my child is a girl that I will tell her as she grows: I want you to be a woman. I want you to dream, and be yourself. There is no right or wrong way, there is only the way you wish to be. The world be damned.

This was different. Even being told so, I don’t think anyone expected this kind of performance. Old sukekiyo intertwined with new sukekiyo, new ideas and new collaboration.

As announced on twitter upon entry we received a leaflet and a small sealed programme.

After arriving at my seat (but actually already going through the door to the audience area) I could see that there was a new concept - the curtain was down but in front of it there was a table covered with a long white cloth. There were five plates and wine glasses, utensils, 3 lit candles on each side. There was something red and shiny on the plate in the middle - apple? small glass ball? One chair stood’ behind the table.

I was planning to watch the show without seeing the programme, but because of the table I broke and had a look. The programme introduced the collaboration with DRESSEDUNDRESSED and asked us to fully experience the result.

BGM kept the atmosphere of the tour with Dead Can Dance.

Also, there were quite a few cameras, but I don’t know if it was enough for a fully fledged release.

Then the theater buzzer sounded for the second time and lights went off.

They started with wind chime sound, it was very dark but I noticed two silhouettes walking from the sides of the stage towards the middle, one person from each side. They wore black suits and had their whole heads wrapped in white cloth, so we couldn’t see their faces, anything. They also had white cloth hanging from the front pocket of the jacket.

With piano melody the front screen started to show the performance credits, the video was kept black&white with an addition of one red geometric element per frame, it included the images of a ballerina on a wooden floor.

In the credits video all band members were sitting behind the table, looking dispassionately ahead. But on the stage two clothed people reached the table and one of them sat down, while the other stood behind. The standing person bent and put their hands on the head of the seated person, tenderly. The seated person took the red ‘apple’ and held it, caressing it. They both wore black leather gloves. They stayed like that, glued to each other head to head, like some kind of weird embrace, so soft.

When finished the clothed people just stood up and slowly walked off the stage, in the separate directions. Theater staff wearing black suits and black cloth wrapped over their heads removed the table carrying it to the left side.

With the use of the screen in the front and darker stage the old feel of sukekiyo’s hall performance was back. And more than ever it brought with it the feeling of separation between the audience and the stage. It felt a bit unreal - you knew there were the real musicians behind the screen but it felt like a movie. It was so well done.

And as always when watching sukekiyo’s seated performance I felt so much adoration and respect towards Mika - the videos he prepares are always absolutely breathtaking and today was not an exception. The way they enhance the feelings, the amount of details, the timing. Everything was really perfect.

In silence the first guitar notes from utA resounded in the venue. Guuzou moratorium had a video with various images of Jesus Christ, including the crucified Christ and the thorn crown. Japanese lyrics were composed into the images. Kyo sang using the microphone on his stand, which means standing with his back to the audience. But the video also included him singing - was it live or made beforehand??? I’m guessing beforehand but the make up and outfits were exactly the same as they wore at the venue.

(my further guess is that they prepared the videos during the break between Fukuoka and Sendai - YUCHI’s new hairstyle is a good timestamp! ;))

Stage presented had a front screen, a back screen and of course stage itself. Again bow towards Mika for creating an incredible effect merging those dimensions together.

All band members were wearing black suits today. They had different shirts etc, but all of them had jackets. Kyo’s had a very specific details - a huge sparkly letters (diamondy/glittery) CHA NEL on the front of his jacket, and a long black scarf attached to the left side, the scarf was hanging flowing together with his pants leg.

For THE WAIZATSU (which started with the huge title on the screen, was it neon pink? And there was so much light!) the front screen went down and Kyo sang holding the microphone in his hand, facing the audience. He wore very dark red lipstick and heavy eyeliner, he smudged the lipstick while dancing during Waizatsu (on purpose and then he matched the Kyo from the video). Kyo again danced with YUCHI who came to the center, intense!

Sharara - during the phrase 心書き綴り 私は存在する Kyo makes a person shape with his hands, a curvy shape? The guitar solo by Takumi is awesome, if you like it on the CD you will die when you hear it live!

Anata yori ue had a video with glittery lips, the lyrics were flowing from the right side to be then ‘sucked’ in by those mouth.

The piano intro in Junboku is heavenly. I also love the video, it started with water and rain images in the beginning to change into fiery red when the song escalates to return to cooler, water-themed imaginary.

Kyo danced and sang, YUCHI was jumping and headbanging a lot. utA made his signature moves, 'stomping’ and leaning his head back when moving arms. Takumi kept switching between keyboards.

The show was getting more and more heated, to be honest I had a good way to cheat the staying still but not really - I placed my bag on my lap so I could keep my hands behind it and tap (silently!) to the rhythm. I’m sorry, I just can’t do it otherwise 🙃

During kisses Kyo sent kiss with his hand twice, at the time of singing 'kiss’ and at the end of the song.

The drum and guitar to introduce elisabeth, oh it was wonderful to hear them! 😭 utA played on violyre with his guitar resting on his back. YUCHI moved closer to the centre and played his upright bass, Takumi sat to play on the acoustic guitar. Kyo was standing in the middle, singing using his mic stand.

And then aftermath!! So many feels😭❤

The stage went dark and I could (barely) see that the members left the stage. But a soft piano melody and a video started on the front screen. We could see all members sitting at the table with candles and plates, just like the table that was on the stage before (from left Mika, utA, Kyo, Takumi and YUCHI). They were in a darker room, it had film noir atmosphere, especially that the video was black and white. There were side tables with more candles, plates with food.

Then the two people from the start of the show came into the room and stood in front of the table. The scene kept changing, as the people came close to each other and they started to touch each other tenderly, suddenly in the next shot all sukekiyo members had black fabric bags over their heads, next shot they were gone (this repeated one or two more times). The people started unwrapping the white clothes from their heads, but they only removed some layers. We could now see the outline of their jaw, lips. Band members continued to just sit there, detached. The two people started to undress each other.

One person was more delicate build, while the one on the right was taller. Under their business shirts they wore simple white t-shirts, but they had black roses (?) on them, they matched, the taller person’s image flickered and for a moment his roses changed to white. They took those t-shirts off as well. Finally they were in their underwear, socks and black shoes, black leather gloves and the remaining white cloth over their heads. They were truly faceless and could seek other roles than the ones decided by their clothes.

Suddenly the taller person was holding a piece of cloth that turned out to be a very simple white bralette. The more slender person put the bralette on. They embraced and kissed.

The scene finished with the shot of an old fashioned lamp with a shade, then last focus on a pictureless frame on the wall.

As the video ended Hakudaku started. 顔のラインを変えて 少しばかりはアノ子に似せられた？ こんな私で御免 汚れて行く価値観

Next was Dorothy… it actually had a disco ball. But only on the video, not the real one!😂 But the atmosphere is set, the rules of the game changed, the world of pleasure inviting.

Kimi wa mukidashi started with the intensity of the red screen, red light continued while the screen in the back showed various scenes. One of them was a couple kissing, they were painted with fluorescent paints in all colours. Then the 'rain’ mid song had lights changed to cool blue only to return to red as the music gets more intense. The 'good day’ appeared on the back screen as Kyo was singing. Scathing.

Dancing continued in Honnou okotowari. YUCHI was doing all the shouts. This song had red effects on the screen that looked like lighting or fire, swirling and moving.

The silence followed as sukekiyo members moved to prepare for a session. Kyo picked a new addition to his equipment - he used a mouth controlled synthesizer.

When I was trying to google the name my first search was 'instruments used in horror movies’… it wasn’t on any list but after hearing their session I think it should be added there!

Takumi was on piano, YUCHI on bass, utA on guitar and Mika played middle tempo. The melody was very jazzy but the addition of the sounds from synthesizer made it eerie, unsettling.

The video screened during the session showed a broken room, bare walls with paint and even plaster coming off, some bricks visible. There were two tall windows, set of two sofas, empty. Everything was black and white.

The clock ticking like sound started Nurebairo, the stage was mostly dark, the main source of light was Kyo’s mic stand shining cold pink on him. Kyo slowly unbuttoned half of his shirt to show his chest, his heart.

And anima… melody pulls you in but the singing breaks you.

Takumi played the last piano notes Kyo cried それでも私 側にいていいですか？ and they continued, piano and crying.

I can’t hope anymore, my love doesn’t change, my heart broken who can I live for? I want to be loved, I want to enter your heart So scary, I cry, in pain, alone I want to live

Then came the acceptance and control of oneself. Tada, mada, watashi has such strong message.

During Uso the front screen became a wet window from rain we looked through. The back screen had various scenes, from a woman walking in the poppy field, cherry trees, river, sea waves caressing the sand; a lot of nature scenes. Band members were bathed in a warm light. It was such a soothing scene, serene. A goodbye.

As Hyouhaku flavour started the front screen went up and the band just kept playing, Kyo singing, playing theremin and dancing as in a trance. Then suddenly theater staff brought the table back, this time accompanied by 5 chairs. Kyo kept dancing.

Instead of walking off the stage as was done before, sukekiyo members one by one took a sit behind the table, YUCHI after putting his bass on the floor, utA left his guitar, Kyo turned and took a step to sit down, last Mika and finally Takumi stood and walked towards the table in silence. Kyo picked up a silver spoon and started playing with it, holding it up, it was catching light.

The wind blowing sound and soft piano melody started again (very slow arrangement of tada, mada, watashi melody). On the back screen ending credits started to play, tour name, dates with venues, band members and all the staff.

At the same time the two people came back as well, mostly undressed as in the end of the video, again from the opposite sides of the stage. They came to the table, the slender person wearing bralette sat first, moving with grace he placed his legs, in socks and black business shoes one by one on the table. The other man soon joined, sitting across from him, their position mirrored.

They again embraced, started kissing and tenderly touching each other. Caressing each other faces, even though still covered by cloth, arms and legs. They kept going lower, until they were lying down, holding each other legs, kissing them. sukekiyo members just sat through this behind the table.

But then, in the end Kyo stood up and took one of wine glasses. He slowly started to spill the content over the people on the table. It was red, looked quite sticky. He took one more wine glass and repeated it, creating splashes of red on their bodies.

The back screen showed FIN then curtain went down and usual piano ending started. Audience gave a fierce applause.

It was truly unforgettable.

Or: Panic! at the (Former) Disco

Blood War: Masquerade of the Red Death Volume 1

McCann and the vamps do not do alright.

Fast Eddie Sanchez–remember him, the guy guarding the door to the members only area?–appears from the crowd, wielding a stiletto knife and quipping about entrance being invite only. He lunges forward to stab the Red Death in the chest.

And gets himself killed right away.

The stiletto melts before it can touch the Red Death. Red D. grabs him by the neck and, despite having scrawny corpse arms like the cover shows, lifts him up one handed. Eddie shrieks in pain. And ignites.

Gouts of flame burst from Eddie’s nose, eyes, ears, and mouth. Tongues of fire erupted from his chest. His fingers blasted into bits like fireworks. Legs and arms exploded like dry wood thrown into a blazing fireplace. His skin blackened and crinkled like burning paper. A blast of incredible heat roared through the chamber. And Fast Eddie Sanchez was gone.

The Red Death laughs “insanely,” which might be too cliche villainish if Weinberg’s going for a “force of nature” theme like his namesake from Poe’s story, as he pours Eddie’s ashes out of his hand.

“He was the first. But not the last. A fitting end to all those who defy the Sabbat. Or challenge the might of the Red Death.”

Alright then, I guess he’s a supervillain.

Understandably, the crowd of nameless vampires and ghouls lose their shit and panic. We’re reminded that fire destroys vampires.

...and though most had existed for hundreds of years, they clung to their unnatural existence with all the hunger of their mortal counterparts. More, for they knew beyond any doubt that they were the damned.

Like what’s going on isn’t already dramatic enough.

They run for the exit, but a mysterious force is keeping the door shut. That or Fast Eddie locked the door behind him when he came in to die. Either way, they’re stuck in the chamber with the Red Death, who’s strolling around killing anyone who gets close enough with fire hugs.

Methodically, it grabbed hold of any Kindred foolish enough to venture close. Clasped the vampire to its chest and turned it to ashes.

Dire McCann, Alexander Vargoss, and the twins, meanwhile, are presumably  still standing in front of their table, posing. Tyrus Bendeict is still seated, and panicking. He thinks the Red Death’s after him and the photos of Baba Yaga from Russia.

McCann shook his head. “Nonsense” he snapped at the wizard. But wondered if perhaps the Tremere sorcerer wasn’t correct.”

McCann’s instinct to be contrary is faster than his ability to think.

I’m starting to notice that Weinberg tends to write two sentences when one sentence with a comma would do. I think it’s supposed to make the narration look deliberate and dramatic, but instead it comes off as stilted and weird to read.

“Attend me,” snapped Alexander Vargoss to his Dark Angels. “He must be stopped.”

Features grim but determined, the Prince stepped forward directly into the path of the Red Death. Vargoss’ body pulsated with raw energy.

A fifth-generation vampire, he was over 2,000 years old and controlled incredible powers.

Jesus Christ, he’s a step away from a methusalah! What the hell’s he doing merely being the Prince of St. Louis? Is he just that bad at the Game?

Many of the important vampires in Blood War are going to be both really old and low generation. As the summary on the back cover states:

“This series reveals many of the underpinnings of the World of Darkness and spotlights the dreaded elder vampires known as Methuselahs.”

This is one instance where having a younger or higher generation vampire in the role might make more in-universe sense.

Raising his hands high over his head, clenching his fingers into fists...

...Vargoss extended his mighty will. “Halt,” he commanded in a voice that never before had been denied. “HALT!”

I guess if the Prince were higher generation, it wouldn’t be as impressive when the Red Death no-sells his Dominate attempts.

The Red Dead laughed in defiance. It continued to advance.

Bet he’s laughing at Vargoss’s Ginyu Force pose more than at his futile resistance.

“Halt,” repeated Vargoss, his voice uncertain. The first traces of doubt showed on his face. The Red Death was very close. It was too late, much too late, for the Prince to turn and run

Sit down, LaCroix Vargoss.

McCann opens fire on the Red Death, but once again the Ingram’s useless. Red D. isn’t even slowed.

Slowly, with great deliberation, the Red Death reached out for the Prince. To the detective, always suspicious of being manipulated, the monster seemed to hesitate for an instant, almost as if waiting for an interruption.

Whatever the Red Death is playing at, the ~*~Dark Angels~*~ step in before things get too awkward.

Moving with inhuman speed, Flavia and Fawn grabbed the prince by the shoulders, spun him around, and sent him flying.

Holy balls, I love this! The twins saved their boss by fucking hurling him away from the fire monster. In my head, I’m imagining them chucking Vargoss “off-screen”, him screaming in his David Warner voice all the way, followed by some cartoon crashing noises and a cat screech.

With Vargoss safe and probably unconscious, the twins turn their attentions to the Red Death.

...they could not resist the challenge the monster presented. Assamite assassins, they thrived on death and destruction. Two sets of matched blades, the finest in the world, slashed in wide arcs.

Yeah, attack the Red Death with blades. That worked so well for Fast Eddie.

To the twins’ credit, their blades don’t melt like Eddie’s stiletto when they try to slice off Red D.’s hands. But they don’t hurt him either. They just pass through.

McCann cursed aloud, astonished. In his entire existence he had never before seen the like. The specter appeared composed entirely of frozen flame. Which meant that nothing physical could harm it. The Red Death was invulnerable to normal weapons.

Like a ghost-type Pokemon. You gotta use special attacks on him.

Tentatively, McCann reached out telepathically with his mind.

...

I’m sorry, he what!? The big bastard’s telepathic too now!?

He hated revealing any hint of his true essence. But there was no other choice. He had to know the truth. What type of being was the Red Death? For a bare instant, thoughts crossed, as minds touched. Then McCann recoiled in shock.

Unable to attack the Red Death in any meaningful way without getting himself killed, McCann instead decides to use his suddenly revealed psychic powers to read his mind and remove some of his mystery just a few pages after his introduction.

With his mind probe, McCann learns that the Red Death is definitely Kindred, not something from a different game like a wraith or, god forbid, an actual mage.

It used a discipline McCann had never before encountered–Body of Fire. Transforming into this form took the combined efforts of several vampires, which meant the Red Death did not work alone. McCann caught a fleeting memory of a group calling themselves The Children of Dreadful Night. Then the thought was gone, swallowed by the creature’s obsession with destruction. In its present state, the Red Death was more elemental fire than vampire. It hungered to destroy life. It existed to kill.

The Red Death immediately detected McCann’s mind probe, closed off its thoughts, and sent back

...a mental stream of hellfire that would have burned the detective’s brain to cinders if he had remained in contact.

Psychically incinerating a dude’s brain if he tries any psychic shit on you. That’s actually an awesome power, if situational.

Let’s talk about this bit with the mind probe. We've just been introduced to this villain, this unstoppable force who came out of nowhere, who even ancient and powerful vampires like Vargoss are helpless against, and what little we learned about him we got from his actions and what he volunteered to tell us about himself. At this point in the story, the effectiveness of such a monster is enhanced by nobody knowing who he is or where he came from, or even his exact motives.

Obviously, we’ll learn more about the Red Death as the story goes on, until all will be revealed. I have no problem with that, and there’re still things we don’t know about old Red D. But thanks to McCann’s previously unhinted at telepathy he immediately confirms he’s a vampire, the name of this disciple everyone’s helpless against, how it’s powered, and the name of the group the Red Death was working with. In trying to show off McCann and further hint at his mysterious nature, Weinberg unintentionally undermined his villain early on. That stuff McCann just learned via mind probe could have been spread out in later chapters, and preferably they’d be uncovered by, you know, actual detective work, maybe with some supernatural help, instead of some sudden asspull power.

By the way, I looked it up on the White Wolf wiki, and there’s no result for a Discipline called Body of Fire, so it seems it was made up for this story. There’s a discipline called Godbody of Fire, but it’s a Kuei-jin power, not Kindred. It works completely differently, and Kindred of the East wasn’t released until ‘98, so don’t expect any plot twists in that direction. Besides, I don’t think the Red Death is Asian.

There’s also a Protean power called Body of the Sun, which transforms a Kindred into “blazing indestructible fire.” Thing is, it’s a tenth-tier power, the highest one. If a character has reached the tenth tier of a power, than they’re probably an Antediluvian or at least a really old Methuselah. Usually the only other tenth tier power of a discipline is an Antediluvian-only power called, I shit you not, Plot Device, which can best be described as “The power can do whatever the hell the storyteller wants.” Obviously it’s for storytelling purposes and not an actual in-universe power. (All that said, most of that I'd typed up before reading the next two books in the trilogy. We'll learn exactly what Body of Fire is in the next book, and why it's unlikely your vampire OC will ever learn it.)

One other thing. McCann doesn’t recognize the Red Death. But the Red Death recognizes him.

Anyway, that little psychic exchange? It took place in only a few seconds, and the twins are preparing their second attack, this time aiming for the eyes. McCann cries “No!” but they ignore him.

When they attack, the Red Death lashes out with his arms in sweeping motions, either trying to grab or clothesline them like the WWE superstar he is. Flavia, the one who hasn’t done anything separately from her sister so far, ducks out of the way. Fawn, the one who killed the fleeing assassin and made fucky eyes at McCann back in Chapter 1, however...

...was not so fortunate. Crimson fingers raked across her face.

The Dark Angel screamed, the first time McCann ever heard her make a sound. Then, an instant later, she exploded in a fireball of white flame. Involuntarily, McCann’s eyes snapped shut.

He hears a gurgling noise behind him and turns around, bumping into someone hurrying away. He opens his eyes and sees that Benedict’s still seated at the table.

Except his head’s been cut off.

And the Red Death didn’t do it, either. While everyone was distracted by the invincible fire vampire, someone went and chopped the poor Tremere’s head off. He instantly starts rotting away, because when a vampire dies their bodies decay to the point they should have if they had died instead of being embraced. The longer they live, the less there is left of them afterwards.

The Red Death has suddenly vanished as well. Post-battle, we’ve got a thoroughly emasculated Ventrue Prince and are down a doorman, a bodyguard, a wizard, and a few nameless cannon fodder vampires and ghouls. The Red Death lost nothing.

Vargoss, presumably covered in a bit of dust and with a banana peel on his shoulder, begins bringing order among the panicked vampires with help from “his overwhelming force of majesty,” which I’m assuming is the high-level Presence power of the same name. With the Red Death gone, the force keeping the exit shut vanishes too (so that wasn’t Eddie’s fault, may he rest in- oh right, damned), but Vargoss won’t let anyone leave until they calm the hell down. He doesn’t want anyone breaking the Masquerade by running past all those goth kids while screaming about fire vampires.

Meanwhile, Flavia, the surviving twin, is having a bad time.

Alone, on her knees in the center of the room, Flavia cried tears of black blood. Dark Angel and Red Death. McCann felt certain their duel was far from over.

Unless someone with a more impressive title comes along to challenge him.

The photos of Baba Yaga are gone, along with anything else Benedict brought with him, his assassin having pocketed them. McCann finds a lone clue, dropped by the assassin when he bumped into them a few moments ago: a green sequin. The kind from the dress Rachel Young, the supposed ghoul singer, was wearing.

Hurriedly, he scanned the crowd. Though no one had been permitted to depart, there was no sign of Rachel Young. The singer had disappeared. McCann was not surprised.

And that’s Chapter 3 done. We won’t see the aftermath of the Red Death’s attack right away. Next chapter we’re taking a break from McCann to focus on a new character in Washington D.C., which has apparently gone to all hell.

I mean that in a World of Darkness way, not the real life bad timeline way.

People have mysteriously started to go missing in New York City and all signs seem to suggest that something is lurking beneath the streets of Manhattan.

Fright: 1 / 5 - Heartless Government Bigwigs

This movie is too wildly stupid and poorly made to achieve anything resembling a real atmosphere of fright.

Gore:  2.9 / 5 - Nasty Clogs in Your Shower Drain

I hate that a movie this dorky actually managed to score this high in gore. While some scenes do show some intense wounds, there is not a very high quantity of gory scenes, and you only rarely see the actual infliction of a wound. It mostly enjoys occasionally showing the aftereffects of attacks and that’s where the vast majority of the gore is coming from.

Jump Scares: Some

They definitely try for a few of them. Luckily they are far from subtle and you can generally see them coming from a mile away.

Review:

A weirdly memorable bit of cheesy 80’s B-movie horror that will probably either make you laugh out loud at the sheer silliness of it all, or just make you want to turn it off.

Thoughts:

C.H.U.D. is the kind of movie I have to kind of put a caveat on because like all B-movies, it isn’t a good movie by any of the usual standards. It is a weirdly over-the-top premise wrapped in an extremely low-budget and poorly made wrapper.

And yet...goshdarnit if that doesn’t make it a lot of fun. It’s a one of those cult classic B-movie horror films where its failures are so large and its choices so bizarre that you can’t help but laugh at it with your friends.

But if you don’t like watching bad movies for the LOLs then C.H.U.D. will probably make you groan out loud instead and regret your decision to give it a try almost immediately.

While many of the film’s faults wind up being humorous, one of them actually irks me quite a bit and it comes in the form of one of the main characters: a photographer named George Cooper (played by John Heard). I think he’s supposed to be likable (?), but he’s actually just a HUGE asshole. There’s this phenomenon that’s especially prevalent in 80’s/90s cinema wherein they love to make a character that’s a kind of snarky outsider type, but in actuality is just being an asshole most of the time.

This would be bad enough as it is, but it’s exasperated by the fact that his girlfriend—a model named Lauren (played by Kim Greist)—is so sweet! And she is WAY too good for him. The film wants them to be this cute couple with a bright future, yet pretty much every interaction they have together is with him selfishly ignoring her desires to pursue his own whims. I can’t help but get the feeling that the film generally thinks he’s in the right. And he’s not!

I mean just look at this exchange, wherein Lauren has landed a well-paying photo shoot for them where she’ll be the model and George the photographer, but George didn’t want to do because he wants to only do serious photo-journalism. While there he throws a tantrum:

“Is this what it’s gonna be all day? A little tits and ass, ass and tits, sell some perfume, is that what it’s gonna be? Whose idea was this? What genius came up with this concept to sell this perfume today?”

“George, do you wanna blow this job for me?”

“What’s the matter, am I making you nervous?”

“Yeah, you’re making me nervous. This is my first chance at national exposure. You’re making-”

“Very well put. Very well put.”

“Are you upset because I’m posing nude?”

“No, I’m upset because these people are using your body and draping it with the carcass of some helpless little field mouse to sell some worthless perfume, which probably smells like sheep shit!”

“Shh!”

“What are you shushing me for? They know it, they made it, they can smell! They know what’s in it and they know what it takes to sell it.”

“Stop it.”

“I’m sorry, OK? I forgot what all wondrous fun this was for me.”

“It’s a goof. It’s a joke. It doesn’t matter. You don’t care about them. You’re doing this for me. I’m going to bamboozle these guys for big bucks and go home, okay?”

“Okay.”

“Okay.”

“I’ll be back.”

At this point he gets a call and walks off the shoot without telling anyone to go do something else. And I think it’s fair to assume that he has just tanked their payout and—more importantly—Lauren’s reputation.

You see what I mean? He’s The Worst. That poor woman should get out of this relationship ASAP and find someone who actually cares about her.

It’s no wonder that his scenes are the low points of the movie and if George was the only main character this movie would’ve been unwatchable.

Luckily for us the film has a whole ‘nother set of main characters! The odd couple duo of police Captain Bosch (played by Christopher Curry) and a soup kitchen operator named A.J. Shepherd (played by Daniel Stern). And these two are where the magic happens. Curry plays a bit of a straight man to Daniel Stern who is friggin’ out there chewing up the scenery and I can’t help but love it.

But what makes this movie such a cult classic?

To be honest it probably has a lot to do with its weirdly memorable combination of the world’s dumbest movie title and wacky urban-legendy plot. Not to mention that it probably doesn’t hurt that this movie gets referenced A LOT in other media. The greatest one clearly being:

“Oh, Homer, of course you’ll have a bad impression of New York if you only focus on the pimps and the C.H.U.D.s.”

-The Simpsons, Season 9, episode 1, “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson”

To its credit though C.H.U.D. just checks off a lot of the boxes for silly good fun B-movies: low budget, strange acting choices, bizarre plotting, famous actors slumming it, and so on. And if that wasn’t enough I can’t help but appreciate that in the grand Jaws-tradition the main villain isn’t the monster, but a selfish and inept government. After all, who can’t relate to a story about a government knowingly poisoning its population because to do otherwise would be inconvenient?

What it really comes down to is how do you feel about bad movies? If you love to watch ridiculously bad movies with your friends and get your MST3K on, you’ll most likely have a lot of fun with C.H.U.D.. But if you’d rather spend your time watching movies that are actually well made, ones with moving performances and thought-provoking plot lines? Well, you should probably do yourself a favor and sit this one out.

A Sample on Sampling

By Douglas Traylor Mid December, 1977, America is engulfed in a "Disco Inferno". With the sudden release of the major motion picture "Saturday Night Fever", came a song that would change music for times more modern. "Stayin' Alive", a song written to depict the struggles to survive in everyday New York, spoke volumes to the masses with it's upbeat relatability. No matter how heartfelt the writing, or catchy the beat, a little ingenuity combined with a sample set the foundation for western pop-culture as we know it. Karl Richardson, sound engineer for the "Bee Gees", carefully cut out sections of pre recorded drum tracks. He then took history's first samples, and glued them together, resembling a belt rather than a spool on the reel-to-reel player. Mr. Richardson had thus founded "Looping". By playing the tiny track coninuously, he composed the song's instrumentals at what could be conceived as the speed of light. Production time looked to be a thing of the past, and sure enough, disco's flame dwindled over time. With the dawn of the eighties came radical new ideas. A bold rebellion to disco inspired by metal bands, ripe with attitude and barraged with criticism. Heavy Metal was in the lime light due to drugs, sex, violence, and mainly playing some sick tunes. When they weren't upsetting the nation's parents, these musicians practiced a more traditional method of production, recording each source seperately while adding it to the composition. Little did anyone realize, a new sub culture was on the rise. Owwing it's structure to looping, and a controversy credible to copyright. Many people credit Kurtis Blow for coining the term "Hip-Hop" in his song "The Breaks". Hip-Hop's beginning is certainly rooted in urban living. Many people took what they could from disco/funk, and transferred it to this new style. What was this new style? With out a tangled mess of tape decks, people were building music from multiple songs combined via turntables and mixers. Certain tracks were used overwhelmingly, such as the "Amen Break" (to what is considered a "break beat") by percussionist Gregor Sylvester Coleman. Set at a convienent four bars (six seconds), it has been sampled over 2000 times by other famous artists. Although Mr. Coleman never recieved any compensation for the use of his creation, situations such as his did lead to drama in the music scene. Disputed royalties for tracks utilizing copy written samples are typically divided to some fraction, without a defense, the proceeds can be completely assumed by the copyright owner and plaintiff. ok. So few days ago, I got into a car accident. I was driving down the highway simply just going straight. All of a sudden, this SUV crashed into me from my left lane and knocked off my side-view mirror & left some marks on my left front door. The guy kept telling me in bad English that he was ahead of me so it's my fault. and I told him that I didn't even move & he was the one changed the lane without even checking to see if it was clear. but he couldn't really speak english well or he didn't even want to listen to me. so I left like that with my sideview mirror dangling next to me. *sigh* this isn't the end of the story yet. I claimed his insurance company which ive never heard of. They said that he's telling them I was the one who hit their car. which made NO SENSE. I even have a picture of their car bumper's mark on my side of the car door which proves that there's no way I hit their car and left a mark on mine and broke my own side view mirror and left THEM no damages. His car was clear with one inch scratch on the side which was made when he hit my car after bumping into me with his bumper and quickly turning back into his own lane. How To Produce A Great Hip Hop Song

What has happened to hip hop music? I've seen a disgraceful turn for the worse on my tv screen, but let's review some real hip hop music.

We will stick to only albums dropped recently. Of course, I highly recommend of each one of these albums. I am not going to criticize any of the records. Simply because there's already a thousand people who've done so - with or without justification.

Let's get started with the "Conscience Rapper" Common. I wish we didn't need to use that particular terminology to categorize the rapper because all rappers should be conscience. It's essentially the definition of hip-hop.

Common - Finding Forever

From the incredible "unforgivable" all the way to the radio smash hits, "The People" and "The Game" (no similarity to the west coast rapper at all) ", this album is worth your purchase.

Common puts together rhymes like a puzzle. Each piece being essential as the last. He uses intricate rhyme schemes, but still gets his point across in the most immaculate manner.

Common exchanges punchlines with Kayne West on "Southside". My favorite collaboration between the two; up until this point. Kayne also produces this track as he does most of the album. West spits at the very top of his game while spitting lyrics e.g. "I know you must be thinking its armorall flow because it never gets rusty". Common on the other hand spits amazing lyrics himself, for example: "Your career was a typo, mine was written like a haiku."

Though Common never comes out and blames the south for hip-hops decline ( that he mentions a multitude of times) the following lyric from "Start the Show" could be subject to misinterpretation, "You sing along wit it, inside you knowin it's wack, Young who? I don't need a openin act". Common never backs down from a fight. In addition, he mentions the absence of hip-hop spirit in the song "The Game".

Is this Common's best work? I don't know. I personally like it better then his final album. Be had a completely different ambience to it though. I guess, we should give credit to Kayne.

Talib Kweli - Ear Drum

Talib's recent effort has sixteen tracks that will fulfill any fans need for another album from the rap superstar.

He spits a number of his most intellectual and deep thinking lyrics thus far in "Ear Drum".

Electrify among the very underrated tracks on "Ear Drum" is perfectly titled since it does electrify you. Especially your thoughts since the majority of the record does.

The guests help the momentum of the album more than they hurt it. Demonstrated in songs like "Hostile Gospel" with Bun B and Pimp C, who seem to fit in very well in the banger by Just Blaze.

If Talib had to take it back to square one. I'm speaking about the hip-hop classic "Reflection Eternal". He definitely took a couple of paces in the right direction.

I'll complete the review by saying that the album isn't perfect, but perfection is in the beholder.

Brother Ali - The Undisputed Truth

Brother Ali probably would get his mic cut off by Bill O Reilly with his very open minded views on America. Actually more times than less, pessimistic views.

A "Letter From The Government" basically denounces the entire war. Ali blatantly states in the chorus, "I got a letter from The government that the other day I opened and read and burnt that man, The way that I live don't concern that man, We gon' need to settle this another way". I guess he might also be speaking about any chance of a draft and his reaction. Maybe only a letter asking him to join the military. Nevertheless, one of the most intriguing songs that has been released this year.

The underground artist doesn't stop there with his attitude towards America. Yes, his home country. On the track "Freedom ain't free". He annihilates our foreign policies. Particularly in regards to people who are starving in other countries. "So I use blood and sweat to butter my bread, Cos this cold world couldn't give a fuck if I'm fed".

If you're a liberal, you will probably take well to this album. He doesn't like the war, he doesn't like our foreign policies, and he doesn't like how Muslims are being treated. He claims to be a devout Muslim in a few tracks.

If this album doesn't make you sit back and think. You might want to get your brain examined.

El P - I'll Sleep When I'm Dead

Honestly. What can I say about this album that hasn't been repeated a million times. This is a monster underground album. Among the biggest in the history of hip-hop. You haven't heard of it? Funny, isn't it? If you like Mike Jones, I recommend you don't check out this album, if you're a genuine hip-hop fan, it's essential!

Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead

I don't think anyone else has said this, but hip-hop needed this album. Not because it has the very best work by my man Nas, but because we needed the history lesson. I learned a lot from this album, I didn't even know.

It also gave me the motivation to go back and play a few of those old albums. How much dust does your "Mc Shan" records have on them?

The Roots - Game Theory

The Roots put together an album that flows together like Rakim and Eric B.

You won't skip a track on this cd. I can guarantee you that. Black Thought's not even at the very top of his game. Am I the only one who finds that unbelievably scary?

The Roots are breaking ground in hip-hop. Although it's underground in general, It's ultimately refreshing.

Ghost Face - More Fish + Fishscale

I am absolutely exhilarated to get all this new Ghostface material. Though he has never been type to have a rest from rapping. He comes back, probably full fledged with these two near classic albums.

Still spitting as mean as you would anticipate. If you would like to learn to be an emcee. Study every move of Ghostface.

Killah Priest - The Offering

Though the album isn't officially out. It did leak. I've heard nothing but positive reviews. I believe this might be his very best work to date.

The album also features some fantastic artists like Dwight & Nicole - Wait Canibus, Ras Kass, Kurupt, and Immortal Technique.

Canibus - For Whom The Beat Tolls

I might take some heat for including this album in my list, but Canibus returns to his old self. I couldn't be happier. He is still one of the greatest lyricists in the game. Never demonstrated better than on his 400 bar track, "Poet Laureate Infinity

A useful tip when it comes to figuring out your beat is to start with the drum track. Why? Simply because it provides a frame of reference around which you may work and since drums are such an essential part of hip hop beats, what better instruments to start with? Thereafter you can build on that.

If you're a beginner learning to utilize your beat making software, before you begin anything, understand how the software works really well. This saves you hours and hours of time and also makes it possible to make better music. Hip Hop is basically based on loops so pay special attention to the loop features of the program.

It's also wise to remember, while figuring out your beat that most hip hop beats are around 4/4. This usually means that there are about four beats per bar, but beats with 2-8 beats per bar can also sound great. Like I said, there are no rules, so don't do what your very best friend is doing, simply to fit in! Do something experimental, something no one has done before. Express yourself while you build the beat.

Maybe She’s Good - 10 Theories on How Madonna ‘Got It’

Usually it takes a while for a pop star to earn heavyweight hatred from a significant percentage of the press and public. But like everything else in her (very) young career, fear and loathing have come quickly indeed to singer/ writer/ dancer/ hot number Madonna. Loathe her or love her, it’s interesting to try and figure this one out. Theories abound, including a few from the lady herself.

I. Phyllis and Bob Theory As Madonna puts it, “I seem to be the girl they hate to love.” No kidding. Private citizens tap their feet to “Lucky Star” or “Holiday” while wondering aloud if anything short of exorcism will get her off their radios and MTVs. The press file reads like she’s a ghoulish maidservant of notorious anti-libber Phyllis Schlafly and notorious Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione, sucking all the feminism and IQ points from the fragile neck of popular culture. Fans and foes alike seem to agree that she’s an ’80s incarnation of the “It” girl – blessed/cursed with a charisma that makes skin goosebump as well as crawl, something beyond her prettiness or infamous tummy. It makes her videos, records and (soon) movies impossible to dismiss. It’s there in person, too. She comes down a corporate hallway in a big black jacket and modest red-knit dress, looking like the video Madonna sans the bare belly and excess Catholic iconography. There is absolutely nothing solicitous in her manner of greeting, nothing straining to charm, nothing yanking at you for approval. Her handshake (a tiny red glove conceals the hand) is firm, and brief. Even so, the force is with her; it swallows her little frame as she walks toward a vast conference room like a sixth grader going to a hard math exam. Undoubtedly, her mind is elsewhere. Just this week, “Like A Virgin” has gone to Number One on the pop charts, and its namesake LP to Number Three, only five weeks after release. Her first LP took almost a year to happen, but once it did it sold two million-plus copies. It’s not quite finished yet, either. Nor is the fallout, which so far includes the four hit singles, three videos, one starring film role and one small part in a movie for which she sang three tunes. Oh yeah, and the lousy reputation. Part of that reputation says that Madonna is simply not a nice person, but superb at appearing so when someone‘s approval could be useful. On this particular day, anyway, she is kind of bristly. A little sharp-tongued and self-satisfied. But she makes no effort to hide any of the warts. More than a few rock stars are downright oily and self-protective when they need nice press. Madonna answers questions straight out, is only pretty nice most of the session, and leaves the warts right out there. If she’s such a master at showbiz politics, where’s the politicking? Where’s the manipulation? II. The Wedding Dress Theory Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in Detroit on August 16, 1958. Veronica is her Catholic confirmation name, chosen because St. Veronica “wiped the face of Jesus and then carried around the cloth with his blood and sweat on it — it was so passionate and weird.” The French-Italian family had five boys and three girls who lost their mother when her namesake, Madonna, was six, Madonna didn’t much like the stepmother that appeared two years later; no doubt the woman felt it. Even in grade school, Madonna apparently had extraordinary intensity; it both scared and fascinated her. “I felt overwhelmed by it at points in my life. People didn’t understand me, especially when I was young; I’d realize I’d just alienated someone and scared them away, a boy or a friend or whoever. I handled it in a number of ways — either I’d get more arrogant and say ‘I don’t need you, I don’t care if you understand or I’d get upset and cry. You can get hurt by it, or you can give them the finger. But it still hurts.” She learned to be defensive then, and still practices, frequently, “It’s easy for me to come out and say stuff. I think I was naturally a verbal and defensive kind of person, but I think I really developed that aspect of my personality growing up in my family, not feeling happy, feeling like I had to defend myself and make a statement, you know? It’s about insecurity? There are mementos of that time. “Just the other day I found a photograph of me dressed in my mother’s wedding gown when I was five years old. It was very strange.” III. The Barbie Doll Dishwashing Theory “Oh yeah, I played with my Barbie dolls all the time — I definitely lived out my fantasies with them.” Madonna lets loose a naughty chuckle. “I dressed them up in sarongs and mini-skirts and stuff. They were sexy, having sex all the time. I rubbed her and Ken together a lot. And they were bitchy, man, Barbie was mean.” She hoots. “Barbie would say to Ken, ‘I’m not gonna stay home and do the dishes. You stay home! I’m going out tonight, I’m going bowling, okay, so forget it!’ You know? She was going to be sexy, but she was going to be tough” A quote from a recent story is brought up in which Madonna had claimed sexual awakening at age five. “Made it sound like I masturbated all the time, didn’t it?” she says with a raised eyebrow. “I really do remember from when I was very, very young, being really attracted to men, and being real flirtatious. The power of my femininity and charm, I remember it was just something I had, that I’d been given, you know what I mean? From the age of five I remember being able to affect people that way. I felt something but I didn’t know what to do with it. I was just very aware of it.” IV. The Boyfriend Theory In the teenage years, two things were pure pleasure — dance and music. Madonna studied ballet as much as her father and her legs would allow. As for the music, it was on her radio, and the more radio-perfect, the better. “My favorites when I was little were Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, the Motown sound. But then I really like ’60s pop songs too — “The Letter” by the Boxtops, “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies, Gary Puckett, Bob by Sherman, “Happy Together” by the Turtles. I loved all those innocent little pop songs. No hard rock, no heavy metal, no jazz. Pop and soul were it.” Dance won her a four-year free ride at the University of Michigan, but the prognosis for toe-shoe stardom was lousy. As would be the ease for years to come, Madonna saw no reason to follow rules, and that rubbed the rulemakers the wrong way. After one school year, she moved to New York City. Hometown friend Steve Bray had started her on drums and singing and a little songwriting. It didn’t take long in New York before dance stepped aside to make more room for music. The next teacher/companion was Dan Gilroy of Queens, whose adoration of the Beatles and their melodies shaped Madonna’s sense of how to construct a song; Gilroy also had the instruments and the patience to start her with the C chords. Madonna left for a frustrating European tour singing and dancing behind a disco singer, then came back to spend a valuable year in the Gilroy brother’s band and home. Eventually she wanted things in the band her own way, although that way wasn’t entirely clear yet. Manhattan and new compatriots beckorted. Bray came out to work with her through two rock ‘n’ roll bands. They didn’t turn out to be the way either. “I didn’t want to go in a rock vein, and that’s what created the schism between my manager of that time period and myself. I was really being influenced by the urban radio stuff that was starting to be everywhere, on the streets and in the clubs. I love to dance in clubs, and I love all the music they play. It made me really want to dance, it was so soulful. I thought, why can’t I do that? I wanted to make music that I would want to dance to when I was out at the clubs.” Logically, New York nightclubs is where she went next. It came down to peddling R&B demo tapes done by her and Bray, at the places where the songs’ magic would get their roughest test. If the songs made people dance in New York’s hippest hothouses, that would be the sign that her way, finally, was the right way. DJ boyfriend Mark Kamins remixed one tape and then took it to Sire, where a deal was made. But neither Bray nor Kamins got to produce the first album, a job they each felt had been promised, and earned. Instead, Madonna was done by veteran R&B producer Reggie Lucas (Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman). Madonna knows it didn’t seem right. She also knows what else it seemed like. She looks the reporter straight in the eye: “If anybody wants to know, I never f*cked anyone to get anywhere. Never.” V. The Trickle-Down Theory Stories about Madonna’s method of career advancement started to circulate shortly after the debut LP came to life on the pop charts. How did this woman with no band or playing credits on her record and no known credibility connections score such a surprise hit? Awfully, uh, juicy looking, isn’t she’? “Some of the things people say are so ridiculous, it’s not even worth defending yourself. The guy who wrote one recent long story, – he got his facts right, all my boyfriends’ names right and how they helped my career, but he wrote the article from just one corner of the room. He just talked about what he saw from that one corner.” She speaks with a tiny shade of sadness, but no rancor. “Yes, all my boyfriends turned out to be very helpful to my career, but that’s not the only reason I stayed with them. I loved them very much.” A pause, then a smile and a shrug. “I’m not Alexis from Dynasty. And going around in corsets is not all I am either. People hone in on what they want to hone in on. They rarely go for the sum total of someone’s personality.” Madonna is not the only one who got helped. Gilroy’s debut with his band, Breakfast Club, is due soon. Kamins is collecting royalties from Madonna and working on new projects. Bray is working with the Breakfast Club; he also had four cowriting credits on Like A Virgin. And Lucas, who lost his slot to Nile Rodgers on LP #2, is reportedly busier than ever. VI. The Bathroom Theory “Reggie was about one thing,” explains Madonna. “He did R&B. He’s a good producer, very open and sensitive. But Nile has worked with so many kinds of musicians, and every record he’s made is a great one as far as I’m concerned. He has the pop thing in him really strong, and he’s done great dance stuff with Chic and Sister Sledge and all those others, and he’s worked with a lot of female vocalists like Diana Ross. I identified with him, too. He’s a real street person, and we hung out at the same clubs. Even before I started to interview producers I thought he was the one I wanted for the second record.” Rodgers is getting to be a popular interview these days for people writing about Madonna. The implication is, of course, that Rodgers is legit, see, and if he likes Madonna without being her boyfriend, then maybe she’s not a total bimbo. Rodgers is affable and willing to talk, even with a mean head cold and a long airplane trip only a few hours away. “Someone like Iggy Pop can get out there and be super-sexual and wild and that’s great. But Madonna is a woman, so they say she’s sleazy? Madonna is blatantly sexual and sensual, but not sleazy, not even a little bit. In my opinion, she’s an excellent natural singer, a natural musician, a serious artist. It would be real nice if some ostensibly smart people who know about music would get past the image and get into the music. I’m hoping she can just ride out all the crap people are saying about her. I think a lot of the real nasty stuff is coming from men. And all that arrogance bit — she sticks to her guns, that’s all. It’s that attitude that comes from growing up in a huge family, you know, always having to fight and yell for things like time in the bathroom.” VII. The Chauffeur’s Friend’s Theory “I was making this movie, Desperately Seeking Suson. One of the drivers that took me to the set every day was this kid, and one day he said to me, ‘I have this bet going with my friend, he told me that all the music you do was done by someone else and they picked the songs and did it all, and all they needed was a girl singer and you auditioned and they picked you. And Madonna isn’t your real name and all of it is fabricated.‘ And I said, ‘WHAAAAATT?? Are you out of your mind??!’ But that’s what his friend told him, and it suddenly hit me that that’s probably what a lot of people think. It hit me.” VIII. The Phyllis and Bob Theory, Part II Here’s the catch for the modern girl: you can be self-determining. You now have the right. You should be self-determining, you must. But. If your self determines that it wants to be smart and sexpot at the same time? You got the power to choose, honey, but you chose wrong, “I thought the Gina Schock quote was pretty funny,” grins Madonna, referring to Schock recent statement to the effect that Madonna makes it hard for people to take women seriously but that Schock loved the record in spite of it. “I think people want to see me as a little tart bimbo who sells records because I’m cute and record companies push ’em because they know they can make a quick buck on my image.” Madonna gives another eyeball to eyeball look. “People don’t want to like me. And that’s because you’re not supposed to be flirty unless you’re an airhead. And they say I do all this stuff to my appearance and look the way I do because I want to please men.” The blue eyes roll toward the ceiling. “I’m doing it because I like it. If I don’t like it, no one’s going to. I do it because it turns me on.” Any female role models or heroes? She sighs. “Carole Lombard. She’s my all-time idol. I love her so much. She’s real sentimental and vulnerable, and funny, and sometimes she’s real bitchy and tough, too. She’s it.” IX. The Sheet Theory You gotta pay if you wanna play, says the firm set of her mouth. “I try to have a thick skin, but every once in a while I read something that someone says about me and it’s so slanderous and moralistic, and it has nothing to do with my music. There was this one review that said things about me that boys said to me in the seventh grade.” For instance? “For instance – ‘slut.’ Yep, they called me that in this review. And ‘cheap coquette,’ a girl who made her way into lots of back seats in the drive-in theater, the kind of girl that made your father slip you a Trojan and pat you on the back and say, ‘Have a good time, don’t stay out too late.'” Her eyes focus across the room as if she’s watching a movie. “I remember guys saying that sort of stuff to me when I was really young. I thought suddenly that the whole experience was repeating itself all over again. Those boys didn’t understand me, and they didn’t like me because I wasn’t stupid, and I was blunt and opinionated, but I was a flirt at the same time. They took my aggressiveness as a come-on. They didn’t get it. And they didn’t get it, if you know what I mean, so I guess they had to say things because they knew that was the only way they could hurt me. That review felt like junior high all over again. And check this out! This reviewer also said that every guy across the country is stroking himself under his sheets thinking about me.” Madonna’s face creases in mischief. “Maybe he’s doing it himself and he feels guilty. Or maybe he asked me out on a date five years ago and I snubbed him.” It’s not out of the question. X. The Time Theory Madonna has to vamoose in 15 minutes, cover story and unanswered questions notwithstanding. This week preceding a needed vacation is crammed with band auditions for the boys who will go on the “Virgin Tour.” The trek will start around March and cover the States as well as Europe. Before and after and probably even during the tour there are TV tapings, fashion layouts, photo sessions, videos, commercials, movie scripts to consider and on and on. And then, “I’ll check into Bellevue, or maybe the Betty Ford Clinic, huh?” Any positive press along the way will be nice, of course, but serious reputation repair can only come if she keeps going, going, going. And she knows it. “The fact of the matter is that you can use your beauty and use your charm and be flirtatious, and you can get people interested in you. Maybe at the start they’re only interested in your beauty. But you cannot maintain that. In the end, talent is the only thing. My work is the only thing that’s going to change any minds. The videos, the records, the movies are the things that will eventually make them think that I’m more than just a girl with a pretty face who’s had some pop hits. It’s just going to take some time.”

This is just one of the strangest songs we ever did hear. It’s kind of a classic among old-school Guetta fans, definitely tells you how not serious people were about their house music back in 2002. It was a time when anything was game, even listing off food items over a killer beat. Honestly, it’s a dope tune, and certainly one that, once you’ve heard it, you’ll never forget.

Scotland’s Emeli Sande has one of the most honest voices in the game. It’s easy to see why Guetta tapped her for what eventually became the third single from his sixth studio album, Listen. It’s a slow, strong build into the big release at the hook. You don’t need much else in the verses besides Sande’s vocal, but we still love the maximalism of that drop.

Not gonna lie, this David Guetta song totally sounds like it was meant for Rihanna, and then Guetta couldn’t get Rihanna, so he just asked Nicki Minaj to play the part of the dance floor songstress. Guess it doesn’t matter, because this is one of the biggest hits of Guetta’s career so far. It peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 and stayed on that chart for 27 weeks. Who can forget the video, feautring Nicki Minaj as some kind of pleasure bot, coming to life mid-construction, singing from that weird metal skeleton mouth? That’s the stuff nightmares are made of.

11. David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha, Afrojack – “Hey Mama”

Guetta’s sixth studio LP Listen has a lot of heaters, and this collaboration with Nicki Minaj tries to recapture some of that megahit “Turn Me On” magic. In my opinion, it does an even better job. Minaj shines, as opposed to sounding like a quick Rihanna replacement. Afrojack helps turn Alan Lomax’s 1940s song “Rosie” into a Dutch house jam. Bebe Rexha, famous now for her collab with Martin Garrix on “In the Name of Love,” supplies the chorus, although she was originally not listed in the credits on radio. Record label execs thought three names was one too many for mainstream audiences to deal with. Hmph.

10. David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj, Flo Rida – “Where Them Girls At”

This track opens 2011’s Nothing But the Beat, Guetta’s most pop-facing record of his career thus far. This is mainstream Guetta unbridled. This is Guetta working hard for that radio domination. Flo Rida is one of pop’s favorite rappers, having made a career off of dance-hop party anthems. Nicki Minaj has two collabs with Guetta on this album, this era being the peak of her pop crossover momentum. It’s a simple composition centered around bright synth chords with heavy emphasis on the vocals. The hook is undeniable. Indeed, “Where Them Girls At” is the rallying cry of every college party from the dawn of time.

9. David Guetta feat. Chris Willis – “People Come and Go”

This David Guetta song is a total disco-revival jam, featuring a killer topline from frequent Guetta collaborator Chris Willis, as well as production touches from another of Guetta’s favorite friends, Joachim Gaurrad. “People Come and Go” is a total classic from 2002’s debut Just a Little More Love. The guitar solo after the chorus might just be my favorite little part. This has some wonderful ’80s edge to it too. We recommend putting it on when you’re getting ready or pregaming. It puts some serious pep in your step and gives you that “this will be a magical evening” kind of feeling.

8. David Guetta  feat. Barbara Tucker – “Give Me Something (Deep in my Heart)”

This is old-school disco groove Guetta, definitely one of the best gems from his debut album Just a Little More Love, released in 2002. This is pretty forward-thinking for that year, and it’s retro-future vibes stand the test of time. I kind of miss this style in Guetta’s later offerings. I’d love to see Guetta get his ’70s funk disco band style back on. Barbara Tucker’s rich, booming voice is beautiful all over this. It’s that 4:25 mark that just takes us over the edge. And that strutting bass? More of this bass, please.

7. David Guetta feat. Chris Willis, Fergie, LMFAO – “Gettin’ Over You”

Is this a sonic snapshot of 2010, or what? We’ve got Chris Willis, duh, but the de facto voice of David Guetta is joined by Black Eyed Peas mama Fergie and EDM-crossover jokester gods LMFAO. Both of those features were radio royalty circa 2010, and they totally dominated in the arena of EDM-pop. This was the moment everyone decided tight neon pants and tanks with text were the only thing they wanted to wear. This is, like, the moment EDM became a hot commodity, and there’s still been no gettin’ over it. #Party

6. David Guetta feat. Akon – “Sexy Bitch”

Yes, there is a video for this song, but it can’t be embedded for some reason, and anyway, no one wants to listen to the clean “Chick” version. We all know half of what makes this song so incredible is Akon’s insane lyrical content. I remember my friend and I laughing for collective hours over a mainstream pop song being like “I want to respect this girl, but she’s so hot, I just have to call her a sexy bitch.” This was Guetta’s first tune to crack the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, though it wouldn’t be his last. Akon actually approached Guetta about working together following the success of his Kelly Rowland collab. Guetta suggested they start immediately, so they booked a hotel in London and wrote this song in one night. It just goes to show, you should never put off for tomorrow what can be done tonight.

5. David Guetta with Fred Rister & Joachim Garraud feat. Chris Willis – “Love Is Gone”

This is a Guetta classic, a cut form 2007’s Pop Life, a huge step for Guetta in the album department. It’s full of filtered synth and electro vibe goodness, which was very en vogue in 2007. The radio edit, heard in the video below, is actually a remix of the original, included at the end of the album as a bonus cut, but this is the version that lives on in collective memory. Chris Willis is the perfect soulful house singer, belting out all the pain of a broken relationship, somehow turning it into a self-affirming message of strength and resilience. It’s very ’90s dance-all-night.

4. David Guetta feat. Usher – “Without You”

Nothing But the Beat might be Guetta’s best album. It had so many unforgettable classics, this jam featuring Usher being one of the best. Again, Usher provides the perfect sing-along hook over Guetta’s higher-than-higher synth melodies. There’s a hint of Discovery-era Daft Punk in those electric keys matched with the pounding four-on-the-floor. Hey, they’re both French, although “Without You” has more commercial sheen than anything the robots have produced. “Without You” is near-perfect summer radio material. It’s upbeat, it’s got star power, it’s soulful, it’s pop-driven. It’s not a song anyone can deny.

3. David Guetta feat. Kid Cudi – “Memories”

Another jam from Guetta’s first international crossover success One Love. In 2009, if you put Kid Cudi on a dance song, you were almost guaranteed a club hit. There’s just something about his dark rasp that says “yes, you will party all night to this,” even when he’s being a little melancholy — which he is totally not here. The video is super goofy and wonderful. Naked chicks are “making” the video, instead of just appearing in it. The barber shop scene is definitely my fave. Those wacky barbers. I guess that’s all the “crazy shit” Cudi’s singing about. This tune is hipster-approved, which is a big thing for Guetta.

2. David Guetta feat. Sia – “Titanium”

Somehow, this David Guetta song only peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100. I distinctly remember everyone I knew belting out its chorus, regardless of how croaky their throaty cries came out. Sia is a vision on this track, a powerful force daring any detractor to step to this superwoman. The upward motion of the bridge is perfect house energy. Guetta is at his best on this tune, harnessing the brilliant energy of festival anthems while maintaining a nostalgic house club quality. It’s not even cheesy, although it could have been at any sonic turn. It’s pure dance magic, the kind of inspiring tune Rocky would train to if he were a young MMA fighter in 2011. Put this on when you need to be the very best.

Fun fact: this song was co-written by Nervo. Yes, that piano riff sounds a lot like Coldplay’s “Clocks,” but we’ll just overlook that because we are too busy hitting the dance floor. I love David Guetta when he channels gay house anthems. This is one of those songs that forces you to smile like a slow-motion blast of glitter falling from the sky. All I see in my mind’s eye is sweaty skin gyrating in a crowd, arms lifted to the sky, couples making out. Kelly Rowland is a beast on this one, a single from 2009’s commercial crossover One Love, and in Billboard‘s opinion, one of the greatest dance pop crossover anthems of all time.

Guetta isn’t afraid to get cheesy, but a lot of that cheese is so gooey, it’s perfect. His willingness to work with artists across genre lines has brought hits with rappers, singer-songwriters and pop stars alike. As we await the first notes of his next single with Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, we take a look back at 15 of his best songs to date, from the beginning of his career way before “EDM” in 2002, to today.

15. David Guetta feat. Rihanna – “Who’s That Chick” 

Before she was tapped as Calvin Harris’ favorite house-pop vocalist, Rihanna teamed up with David Guetta in the studio for this filtered-out dance floor hit. It wasn’t as huge as “We Found Love” or other Guetta productions from 2010’s One More Love, but it did chart as high as 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.

14. David Guetta – “Atomic Food”

This is just one of the strangest songs we ever did hear. It’s kind of a classic among old-school Guetta fans, definitely tells you how not serious people were about their house music back in 2002. It was a time when anything was game, even listing off food items over a killer beat. Honestly, it’s a dope tune, and certainly one that, once you’ve heard it, you’ll never forget.

13. David Guetta feat. Emeli Sande – “What I Did For Love”

Scotland’s Emeli Sande has one of the most honest voices in the game. It’s easy to see why Guetta tapped her for what eventually became the third single from his sixth studio album, Listen. It’s a slow, strong build into the big release at the hook. You don’t need much else in the verses besides Sande’s vocal, but we still love the maximalism of that drop.

12. David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj – “Turn Me On”

Not gonna lie, this song totally sounds like it was meant for Rihanna, and then Guetta couldn’t get Rihanna, so he just asked Nicki Minaj to play the part of the dance floor songstress. Guess it doesn’t matter, because this is one of the biggest hits of Guetta’s career so far. It peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 and stayed on that chart for 27 weeks. Who can forget the video, feautring Nicki Minaj as some kind of pleasure bot, coming to life mid-construction, singing from that weird metal skeleton mouth? That’s the stuff nightmares are made of.

11. David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha, Afrojack – “Hey Mama”

Guetta’s sixth studio LP Listen has a lot of heaters, and this collaboration with Nicki Minaj tries to recapture some of that megahit “Turn Me On” magic. In my opinion, it does an even better job. Minaj shines, as opposed to sounding like a quick Rihanna replacement. Afrojack helps turn Alan Lomax’s 1940s song “Rosie” into a Dutch house jam. Bebe Rexha, famous now for her collab with Martin Garrix on “In the Name of Love,” supplies the chorus, although she was originally not listed in the credits on radio. Record label execs thought three names was one too many for mainstream audiences to deal with. Hmph.

10. David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj, Flo Rida – “Where Them Girls At”

This track opens 2011’s Nothing But the Beat, Guetta’s most pop-facing record of his career thus far. This is mainstream Guetta unbridled. This is Guetta working hard for that radio domination. Flo Rida is one of pop’s favorite rappers, having made a career off of dance-hop party anthems. Nicki Minaj has two collabs with Guetta on this album, this era being the peak of her pop crossover momentum. It’s a simple composition centered around bright synth chords with heavy emphasis on the vocals. The hook is undeniable. Indeed, “Where Them Girls At” is the rallying cry of every college party from the dawn of time.

9. David Guetta feat. Chris Willis – “People Come and Go”

This is a total disco-revival jam, featuring a killer topline from frequent Guetta collaborator Chris Willis, as well as production touches from another of Guetta’s favorite friends, Joachim Gaurrad. “People Come and Go” is a total classic from 2002’s debut Just a Little More Love. The guitar solo after the chorus might just be my favorite little part. This has some wonderful ’80s edge to it too. We recommend putting it on when you’re getting ready or pregaming. It puts some serious pep in your step and gives you that “this will be a magical evening” kind of feeling.

8. David Guetta  feat. Barbara Tucker – “Give Me Something (Deep in my Heart)”

This is old-school disco groove Guetta, definitely one of the best gems from his debut album Just a Little More Love, released in 2002. This is pretty forward-thinking for that year, and it’s retro-future vibes stand the test of time. I kind of miss this style in Guetta’s later offerings. I’d love to see Guetta get his ’70s funk disco band style back on. Barbara Tucker’s rich, booming voice is beautiful all over this. It’s that 4:25 mark that just takes us over the edge. And that strutting bass? More of this bass, please.

7. David Guetta feat. Chris Willis, Fergie, LMFAO – “Gettin’ Over You”

Is this a sonic snapshot of 2010, or what? We’ve got Chris Willis, duh, but the de facto voice of David Guetta is joined by Black Eyed Peas mama Fergie and EDM-crossover jokester gods LMFAO. Both of those features were radio royalty circa 2010, and they totally dominated in the arena of EDM-pop. This was the moment everyone decided tight neon pants and tanks with text were the only thing they wanted to wear. This is, like, the moment EDM became a hot commodity, and there’s still been no gettin’ over it. #Party

6. David Guetta feat. Akon – “Sexy Bitch”

Yes, there is a video for this song, but it can’t be embedded for some reason, and anyway, no one wants to listen to the clean “Chick” version. We all know half of what makes this song so incredible is Akon’s insane lyrical content. I remember my friend and I laughing for collective hours over a mainstream pop song being like “I want to respect this girl, but she’s so hot, I just have to call her a sexy bitch.” This was Guetta’s first tune to crack the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, though it wouldn’t be his last. Akon actually approached Guetta about working together following the success of his Kelly Rowland collab. Guetta suggested they start immediately, so they booked a hotel in London and wrote this song in one night. It just goes to show, you should never put off for tomorrow what can be done tonight.

5. David Guetta with Fred Rister & Joachim Garraud feat. Chris Willis – “Love Is Gone”

This is a Guetta classic, a cut form 2007’s Pop Life, a huge step for Guetta in the album department. It’s full of filtered synth and electro vibe goodness, which was very en vogue in 2007. The radio edit, heard in the video below, is actually a remix of the original, included at the end of the album as a bonus cut, but this is the version that lives on in collective memory. Chris Willis is the perfect soulful house singer, belting out all the pain of a broken relationship, somehow turning it into a self-affirming message of strength and resilience. It’s very ’90s dance-all-night.

4. David Guetta feat. Usher – “Without You”

Nothing But the Beat might be Guetta’s best album. It had so many unforgettable classics, this jam featuring Usher being one of the best. Again, Usher provides the perfect sing-along hook over Guetta’s higher-than-higher synth melodies. There’s a hint of Discovery-era Daft Punk in those electric keys matched with the pounding four-on-the-floor. Hey, they’re both French, although “Without You” has more commercial sheen than anything the robots have produced. “Without You” is near-perfect summer radio material. It’s upbeat, it’s got star power, it’s soulful, it’s pop-driven. It’s not a song anyone can deny.

3. David Guetta feat. Kid Cudi – “Memories”

Another jam from Guetta’s first international crossover success One Love. In 2009, if you put Kid Cudi on a dance song, you were almost guaranteed a club hit. There’s just something about his dark rasp that says “yes, you will party all night to this,” even when he’s being a little melancholy — which he is totally not here. The video is super goofy and wonderful. Naked chicks are “making” the video, instead of just appearing in it. The barber shop scene is definitely my fave. Those wacky barbers. I guess that’s all the “crazy shit” Cudi’s singing about. This tune is hipster-approved, which is a big thing for Guetta.

2. David Guetta feat. Sia – “Titanium”

Somehow, this song only peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100. I distinctly remember everyone I knew belting out its chorus, regardless of how croaky their throaty cries came out. Sia is a vision on this track, a powerful force daring any detractor to step to this superwoman. The upward motion of the bridge is perfect house energy. Guetta is at his best on this tune, harnessing the brilliant energy of festival anthems while maintaining a nostalgic house club quality. It’s not even cheesy, although it could have been at any sonic turn. It’s pure dance magic, the kind of inspiring tune Rocky would train to if he were a young MMA fighter in 2011. Put this on when you need to be the very best.

1. David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland – “When Love Takes Over”

Fun fact: this song was co-written by Nervo. Yes, that piano riff sounds a lot like Coldplay’s “Clocks,” but we’ll just overlook that because we are too busy hitting the dance floor. I love David Guetta when he channels gay house anthems. This is one of those songs that forces you to smile like a slow-motion blast of glitter falling from the sky. All I see in my mind’s eye is sweaty skin gyrating in a crowd, arms lifted to the sky, couples making out. Kelly Rowland is a beast on this one, a single from 2009’s commercial crossover One Love, and in Billboard‘s opinion, one of the greatest dance pop crossover anthems of all time.
