Thargelion was the realm of Caranthir, located in the north east of Beleriand just north of Ossiriand and bordered by the Ered Luin, the eastern stretch of mountains that divided Beleriand from the rest of Middle Earth

World building notes

-Like most of the Noldor in Eastern Beleriand, many of Caranthir’s scouts keep birds of prey. In Thargelion these are primarily peregrine falcons and kestrels. Hunting with birds was less common however.

--There are populations of Green Elves who live in Thargelion, primarily in the mountains and near the border of Ossiriand. Though they also do not use birds for hunting, certain species are kept as companions or messengers.

-Chicken breeding as an art and science developed during the Watchful Peace. Chickens in Thargelion are appraised for long plumage and colorful feathers. Their eggs are eaten but they are not often used for meat.

-Chickens, peacocks and quails were kept by the Noldor of Thargelion, techniques of raising and breeding them were learned from Sindar and Silvan cultures of Eastern Beleriand. Indeed the Noldor of Thargelion were one of the only Noldor populations to keep quails.

-Bearded vultures appear on the crests of some of Caranthir’s lords and were even kept by a few of them

-Feathers of various mountain birds especially eagles and ouzel appear in wood carvings as an architectural motif during the Watchful Peace in Thargelion

-Out of all the Fëanorian realms, water birds appear most often in art and other cultural references in Thargelion as Lake Helevorn and its wildlife are a central facet of life there especially in times of peace. Wading birds like crakes, cranes and stilts are especially Valued.

okay, birds seen at home in june round up! comes to a total of 62 species, which is oddly high for the middle of winter. the highlight was the green twinspot, which i’d only got my first ever sighting of two weeks earlier. presumably it had only found its way to our garden because of the heavy rains and flash floods (and the tornado what the fuck) a few days prior - they’re forest birds, whereas our area is more broad-leaf woodland.

On one hand, they should not throw off her elegance with being too big but the ability to hug her girls and literally swipe them under her wings would work sooo well.

A micro mini love letter to Yuuki Tetsuya, but actually to @prettyiwa who first got me deep into daiya no ace, and to both ix and @mangoisms who make me fall in love with daiya over and over again

You take another deep breath.

papapa papapapapa papapa papa

The soft rustle of footsteps comes to a stop a few meters away. A curtain of silence falls around you, as if a goshawk was near.

You take deep, slow breaths in, out, in again while you arch your back and hold your right leg up behind you. Neck elongated and eyes still closed, you greet him, “Morning captain.”

He huffs almost imperceptibly. “You knew it was me.”

It’s not a question, but, “You have a light gait,” you murmur by way of explanation.

“You’re up early.”

A light breeze picks up, rustling the leaves and carrying his words to you.

You slowly lower your leg, remembering to breath through the movement this time. You finally open your eyes to find Tetsuya standing with you in the forest behind the practice fields, the grassy clearing inside the copse your own little hideaway. “I like the peace and quiet. And the birds.”

He pauses, looking past you as he tilts an ear up to listen.

His brow furrows.

“Woodpecker,” you whisper, and he nods.

“Bunting,” you answer his unspoken question again.

His eyes crinkle at the corners. “Can I join you?”

“I’d love that.”

He steps closer and, with dogged determination, arches his back to lift his right leg up behind him, trying to mimic the position you were in when he first saw you. His body is stiff, very stiff, his hands flailing around for balance and limbs jutting out at wild angles as he attempts to wrangle himself into some semblance of your yoga pose.

Your soft laughter carries across the grassy clearing.

“So there is something you’re not good at.”

He stops thrashing and kneels down with a thud beside you, a little chagrined. “I’ve never done yoga. You’ll have to show me how.”

As the dawn light crests the hill, the warm amber of his eyes flare into a molten gold. It suits him, you think, as you bend down and bring your face to his.

“I think there are some beginner’s poses I can start you with,” you breathe against his lips.

You’re blocking the sun now, but his gaze still scalds, burns with the undying embers of his devotion. To his teammates. To baseball. To you. And your chest boils over with it.

09/04/2023-Day 1 of the Scotland trip 

Pictures taken that day in this set are of: 1. A marvelous Mountain Hare, I was amazed to see a few of these. 2. A reflective view at the stunning Loch Garten a place I love so much. 3. A lovely Lapwing we got a close view of from the minibus at Lochindorb. 4. A Red Grouse by Lochindorb, a beautiful star bird of the trip. 5. Lochindorb. 6. Hoof fungus at RSPB Loch Ruthven. 7. Slavonian Grebe at Loch Ruthven, it was an honour to see them in their gorgeous summer plumage for the first time, seeing this species I love in this way that I never had before was a true highlight of the Scotland trip. 9. Seeing Black Grouse lecking, Crested Tit, a rare Ring-necked Duck at Loch Vaa, Goldeneyes, Goosanders, Red Kite, Buzzard, Goshawk, Lesser Redpoll, Treecreeper, Common Gulls, Oystercatcher, Roe Deer and Brown Hare were other highlights.
