Resurrecting the Tyrant: Bringing Back the Tyrannosaurus Rex
🦖 Unleash the ROAR of history! 🌋 Join the daring quest to bring back the iconic Tyrannosaurus Rex! #DeExtinctionDreams #TyrantRevived 🦕
Daily writing promptIf you could bring back one dinosaur, which one would it be?View all responses One of the most iconic and awe-inspiring dinosaurs that I might consider bringing back is the Tyrannosaurus rex. The Tyrannosaurus rex, often referred to as T. rex, was one of the largest and most fearsome carnivorous dinosaurs that ever lived. It roamed North America during the late Cretaceous…

okay actually given that the end-cretaceous extinction is just One Very Bad Day
why the HELL hasn't doctor who had an episode about it. that's totally on brand. it's the ultimate volcano day, just an asteroid
I have SEVERAL questions and frankly I'm going to blame Moffat for this oversight because I can
that said I wouldn't trust them to get it right (they'd say all the dinosaurs go extinct, probably not do great reconstructions of them based on their other dinosaurs, probably celebrate the "rise of mammals" etc) given how anthropocentric the show is; so maybe its a blessing that this episode doesn't exist

it's so fucked up that when "After Jurassic World, when you thought I was dead, did you even look for me? Did I even matter?" happens, Kenji doesn't even know about the beacon. that kid had been justifying his dad not coming for him because of the UN quarantine, but then his dad drags him back to Nublar... for business. he had the means and the resources to go looking for him, but through the season Kenji learns that he alone would never be enough motivation.

The Rise of Mammals: an evolutionary tale of extinction and diversification
Tumblr media
The above infographic is a brief summary. Mammals and dinosaurs evolved at the same time, but while the legendary asteroid killed off all the big-bodied dinosaurs, the herbivores and carnivores, the small, generalist mammals managed to survive on whatever's left (probably bones and ash lmao). 7% of the mammal species remained after the asteroid came down, and today, these mammals have diversified into three large groups: the eutherians, the monotremes, and the marsupials, with the eutherians reigning as the dominant group in this era.

surprise!! remaking this post with corrected, updated links!!
Introducing…
‘DINO’-tello
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BIG THANK U to Anixolt on twitter for accepting this commission request!!! I'm so excited to share this 'Future' Donatello with you all!
Set in an alternate reality, Donnie & his brothers go back in time to the cretaceous period to stop a cataclysmic event. However, in doing so, the four brothers get stuck in the past and live among the dinosaurs.
[link to twitter thread]
(Note! Permission to post my commission on tumblr was given by artist via Twitter!)
More lore below!
Because the Ooze was designed to make super soldier mutants, it helps its host adapt to the conditions around them. After a few years, it started to double-mutate him to adapt to his new harsh environment, making him very raptor-like.
Because of his double mutation and trauma of past events, Donnie is at risk of going into a feral “Savage” mode like Raph
Has two modes— ‘Hunter’ and ‘Scientist/Alchemist’
While hunting Donatello relies on his instincts. Becomes very aggressive and territorial.
He uses an ankylosaurus skull and other dinosaur parts as his battle shell and protective gear while hunting
When he isn’t hunting, Donnie is trying to reinvent necessities to make living in a prehistoric era a bit easier with what materials are available to him
Whatever he doesn’t have, he’ll make. From scratch.
Dino-Tello’s concept was inspired by a similar 2003 TMNT episode where they go to the past, 2003 Leatherhead, Tarzan, and the anime series ‘Dr. Stone’
His concept is meant to emphasize Donnie’s other strengths beyond technology— such as his Super-intelligence, his close-combat fighting skills, and ability to communicate with other creatures (as shown in the Todd Scouts episode)
He and his brothers tame a triceratops and name him Zog, who was both a pet and steed
For one reason or another… Donatello is the last turtle standing
However, due to classic Hamato shenanigans— ‘Dino’tello might not be all alone for too long 👀👀👀

Idea for an animated kid's movie/comedy.
So there's this dinosaur park that's a thinly veiled Jurassic Park knock-off (call it Cretaceous Island), and it's a bit of a toy story situation, in that the dinosaurs can talk and communicate when the humans aren't looking, mostly at night.
The dinos don't really want to break out since they like their cushy zoo lives and five-star treatment from the staff, so they're willing to get oggled by a bunch of twelve year olds to keep the food coming.
Out main characters are a T-Rex, two raptor sisters, and a wise old triceratops. The raptors are bored with their lives and long for adventure, the triceratops is a wise-old mentor figure, and the T-Rex is lonely since the park won't engineer any other T-Rex's for safety reasons.
Through magical shenanigans they get sent back to the actual Cretaceous period.
Now these pampered genetically engineered dinos have to survive in the savage dinosaur era. To underscore the differences between them, the future dinos are animated as pretty standard cartoon dinosaurs, a la Land Before Time, while the dinosaurs from the past are animated to be as scientifically accurate as possible.
The dinos go through shenanigans, amke friends in the past, evade predators, and eventually make their way home through magic portal stuff, except for the T-Rex who elects to stay behind since he's fallen for a female T-Rex he met in the past. His friends are sad to leave him behind, but go to the present anyway.
Back in the present, the dinos think nothing has really changed, but they find that the exhibit in the visitor's center, previously a single roaring T-Rex skeleton, has been replaced with two T-Rex's, famous for being found fossilized together called "The Deadly Lovers", and its their friend and the mate he found in the past. It ends on the bittersweet note.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… a dinosaur? Nope to all of the above. This Fossil Friday, let’s talk about pterosaurs—the first animals with bones to evolve powered flight. Though they were related to dinosaurs, pterosaurs evolved on a separate branch of the reptile family tree. They ruled the skies for more than 150 million years, evolving into dozens of different species. Some were as small as a paper airplane while others, like Pteranodon pictured here in the Museum's Hall of Late Dinosaurs circa 1940-1960, had a wingspan of more than 20 ft (6 m).
Along with other large pterosaurs, Pteranodon longiceps was first discovered in western Kansas, near a chalk formation called Monument Rocks. Today the region is dry, but at the time this species lived, about 85 million years ago, central North America was covered by a seaway. This large pterosaur likely spent its days flying over the sea. Unlike early species of pterosaurs, Pteranodon and many other Cretaceous-era species didn’t have any teeth. In fact, its genus name means “winged and toothless,” while the second name, longiceps, means “long-headed.”
Today, you can find Pteranodon in the Hall of Vertebrate Origins. We're open daily from 10 am-5:30 pm! Plan your visit.

"I don't know what words to use anymore!"
That's okay! I will help!
Do you mean "the evolutionary group that consists of all things called dinosaurs"? ----- use the word Dinosaur!
Do you mean "what we classically considered dinosaurs"? ----- use the term Nonavian Dinosaur!
Do you mean "dinosaurs that are studied by paleontologists"? ----- use the term Fossil Dinosaur!
Do you mean "any organism studied by paleontologists"? ----- use the term Fossil Organism!
Do you mean "dinosaurs from before history"? ----- use the term Prehistoric Dinosaur!
Do you mean "any living thing from before history"? ----- use the term Prehistoric Life!
Do you mean "just the dinosaurs that survived the end-Cretaceous mass extinction"? ----- use the term Neornithine! or bird. or Cenozoic Dinosaur.
Do you mean "just the dinosaurs that are around today"? ----- use the term (Living) Bird! or living dinosaur
Do you mean "Dinosaurs and Pterosaurs/Pterodactyls"? ----- use the term Ornithodiran!
Do you mean "Just the dinosaurs from the Mesozoic Era"? ----- use the term Mesozoic Dinosaur!
Do you mean "large classical reptiles"? ----- use the term Large Nonavian Reptiles
Do you mean "big lizards"? ----- then you aren't talking about dinosaurs, even a little bit, and should just say Big Lizards
Do you mean "something that is an evolutionary dead-end"? ----- there's no such thing; most organisms go extinct bc of happenstance, not because they were doomed to fail. lol.
Do you mean "something old and outdated, behind the times"? ----- then say Something old, outdated, or behind the times
Do you mean "something that hasn't evolved or changed in millions of years"? ----- No such thing. Every population is constantly evolving, and if something looks unchanged, that just means the change happened somewhere you can't see it.
Do you mean "something that looks like it hasn't evolved or changed in millions of years"? ----- I still recommend you drop this idea from your brain, but if you MUST, use "living fossil" or "prehistoric vibes". living fossils aren't a thing btw.
Do you mean "Dimetrodon"? ----- then say Dimetrodon
Do you mean "any large reptile that is extinct"? ----- then say Extinct Reptilian Megafauna (and accept that includes some large birds)
Do you mean "any large [traditional] reptile that is extinct"? ----- then say Extinct Nonavian Reptilian Megafauna
Do you mean a big reptilian monster? ----- then say Monster
I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting but here you go! words and terms that mean things!
