Was in a call with some IRL friends and they're great friends but they were going on a tirade about how they hated this kid from our junior high, and like yes I also did not like him, but they were making fun of him for like the "cringe" stuff he did (like Naruto run or move around weirdly like bouncing around during games with balls in PE) and like how he picked at his acne, and it's just...a lot of his neurodivergent traits. They made fun of his hair color and called him greasy. And don't get me wrong, he was not a great person and disrespected boundaries and And now I feel so nervous. Is that how they see me? Have they always seen me like that? At what point is my weird not okay for them? My acne is pretty bad right now, and I have issues with picking at it. But I haven't been insecure about it very much. Until right now. Do they think it looks bad? Do they think I look bad? Is my hair color okay? Do I look greasy too? Do I make them uncomfortable? Am I annoying? I don't want to be. But when they make fun of kids like this who probably don't always know that they're being a POS, I just...I don't know! It makes me feel awful about myself. And now I feel all gross in my own body.

If you’ve ever judged someone for using a pacifier, aac device, their special interests, the way they talk, using fidgets when they’re “not trendy”, using noise canceling headphones, stimming, making “random” noises, if you’ve ever called them cringe, used autism as in insult, bullied an autistic person, made fun of someone for struggling socially or being nonverbal, even having verbal shutdowns, FUCK YOU! Ableism towards neurodivergent people (and ableism in general) is only getting worse, because these fucking middle school boys think that its funny, you can’t call someone or something sped, retarded, cringe, etc. (keep in mind that it’s completely okay to reclaim these words AS A NEURODIVERGENT/DISABLED PERSON)

And a friendly reminder that nonverbal autistic people have said that they don’t like people saying they “went nonverbal” because it invalidates their experience as a nonverbal person. There are many other things you can say instead of this, and these people need to be taken seriously.
