Beau: Essek if you fuck this up I swear to god…my essence will haunt you
Essek: and I will deserve it, like I deserve all the things that haunt me
Beau, visibly flashing back to mid-campaign Caleb: aw for fucks sake

There aren't nearly enough compilations in the Critical Role fandom.
I mean there's SO MUCH material but I guess that's also kinda the problem...
Still sad though, it would be so much easier to get into characters or certain story aspects if you didn't have to skip through every four hour episode

The constant war in my brain between sitting down and finishing my play through of Kingdom Hearts in release order (I’m finally on Birth by Sleep) or finishing my watchthrough of campaign 2 of critical role whenever I have free time

I got in my own head about that one hallway in Aeor where Matt described the water as “waist deep” and what that would mean for a party of such wide-ranging heights.
Working from the assumption that when Matt says “waist high” he’s visualizing waist high on him, and armed with knowledge of Matt’s height, one blog post about proportions in figure drawing, and my own headcanon character heights, I have deduced that the water in that hall is approximately 42” deep.
This means that:
The water is at or near waist high for Caleb (5’9”) and Yasha (5’11”).
It’s high waist/low rib for Beau (5’5”) and Essek (5’6” when floating), and at about the underbust line for Jester (5’2”).
It would be low waist for Fjord (6’1”), down at the iliac crest level for Caduceus (7’0”), and totally over Veth’s head (3’3”).
I hope you all enjoy this useless information as much as my brain enjoyed forcing me to produce it!

Underrated way of thinking about Crit Role combats is to put yourself in the pov of one character and chart out the madness, like in the E140 boss fight Caleb:
is flung through the air and crushed under a tower
is pulled out from under the tower by a floating toothpick in a fancy cloak
finds out that one of his best friends is dead
uses his new Cognouza Powers to teleport her corpse
gets hit with two necro-blasts
falls unconscious
is brought back to consciousness
narrowly avoids being stabbed to death
is stabbed to death
All in the space of three rounds of combat which means approximately eighteen seconds

Caleb tries to apologize (!) to Beau for hurting her feelings (!!) back at Yussa’s tower by explaining to her that he is terrified of powerful mages because if they sell him out to the Cerberus Assembly he is dead, and also by expressing in his Caleby way that he is grappling with the now-inescapable (he tried so hard to escape it) fact that he once again has loved ones because he cannot bear (again) to be responsible for their deaths, as he surely will be if he is found, and Beau misconstrues this as Caleb distrusting/rejecting/discounting her the M9 because as much as she has grown she still reflexively expects to be rejected at any moment by people she cares about, and all of that is extremely good character shit but the thing I really can’t get past is how good Liam and Marisha are at this?? Like, I already knew how good Liam is, but this was a real standout moment from Marisha for me. Liam drops Caleb’s whole trauma in her lap and she processes it and comes out with a nuanced, believable, and perfectly in-character misunderstanding without missing a beat.
Then in the next episode when Caleb spills his guts to the whole team, Beau recognizes her mistake and what drove it and apologizes (!!!) to Caleb, and you know what that is, that’s growth. And THEN, when Caleb says, wracked with guilt and shame, that he’s been using them, she pushes him on it - how has he been using them - and it’s so clear that while months earlier that would have been a defensive, how-dare-you demand it is now i-am-calling-you-on-your-bullshit tough love. She sees him, and it’s great.
I guess what I am saying is that I did not expect to love Beau as much as I do, but here we are.

Caduceus saying to Lucien “my friends think about you a lot, I never do” is incredible shade, more so even than “I hope you find someone who’ll mourn your death”.
Caddy is so chill and matter of fact like “oh, it’s you again” in tones of mildest polite disinterest when you’ve pushed all night through a fucking blizzard to find this upstart bunch of bastards who don’t seem to take you very seriously because they’re stuck on some weird idea of some other you you neither remember nor even understand (is that disquieting? No. It isn’t. Not if you don’t think about it) and now there’s this gangly, placid weirdo telling you to your face he doesn’t think about you at all while simultaneously GETTING IN YOUR WAY when you are BURDENED WITH GLORIOUS PURPOSE…well, I just see how that could get under your skin, is all

Low key one of my favourite CR things is when Matt plays animals, eg Nugget, just sitting there panting and barking unselfconsciously at his friends.
Or like, Caleb is having a very somber heart-to-heart with Frumpkin and there’s Matt, cat face on, meowing along. Incredible.

Early campaign Caleb: casts Disguise Self so that even in the bath he appears dressed head-to-toe in rags so no one will look too closely at him
E131 Caleb: does a full 360 buck naked in a hot spring so all his friends can inspect him for malevolent arcane eyes

*spoilers for CR C2E97*
I love, love, love when characters do nice things for each other, and everyone trusting Jester to buy them fancy party clothes, and then she and Caduceus teaming up to knock it out of the park is just...so good.
Jester is a trickster but she loves her friends a lot, and I think that part of being an effective trickster is reading people well enough to know what would bother them - how to make them look a fool, rob them of their dignity - which is a skill you can invert when it comes time to, when all your amazing, powerful, beloved friends need to be armored against their own insecurities.
Caleb is dressed as an archmage of power and standing; Fjord a man of authority who commands respect. Beau's outfit is slick, untouchable, way cooler than anyone else's. Veth's dress with its buttons, extraneous and shiny, celebrates her transformation and honours both Veth and Nott. Yasha, who loves beautiful things, is given a dress that reveals her own beauty without making her look like someone she isn't.
As clothes for a fancy party these outfits say "look at us, know we are the equal to any of you" but as gifts to each of the Nein they also say "look who you are, we see you, we see your potential and your greatness and we love you", and that just gets me right where I live.
Also, this was a nice and fun thing for Jester and Caduceus to do for their friends, but it was also a nice and fun thing for Laura and Taliesin to do for their friends!

Beau: what are you talking about man, I’ve liked you this whole time, I practically love you at this point, it’s YOU who doesn’t like ME
Caleb: are you literally insane I’m crazy about you I would both kill and die for you
Beau: well what the fuck, man
Caleb: what the fuck

Caleb reading Der Katzenprinz is the saddest thing that’s happened in this whole campaign and here’s why:
Caleb’s mother, who loved him, read him a story about another boy whose mother loved him, who was taken from his safe (if stifled) life by a magical prince and promised and given wondrous things, and in the story the boy turns his back on the gifts for the sake of his mother and her love, and you can imagine the scene - baby Bren tucked in bed, enchanted by the whimsical story, his mother full of tenderness for her sweet boy, neither of them with any notion at all of what will happen when the magic comes for them.
In the story the Cat Prince tells the boy that he is a credit to his mother, and the tragedy of Caleb is that he could have - should have - had a life like the fairytale promised, a credit to his family and his country - but not all magical princes are kindly and forgiving.
