hand to the holy byble now babes, how many people here actually know what media literacy means, or at least have a concrete personal definition. it started off as a fairly relevant term that was used approximately right, but by now it’s devolved into a buzzword to slap over any approach to the text you don’t vibe with.
GA have no media literacy for not absorbing the show as a text and for not forming thoughts and opinions about it as such and not just as a piece of entertainment. okay.
m’levens have no media literacy for forming their analytical opinions and conclusions without (by our assumption/observation) digging into the text in any meaningful way, and instead taking every literary decision at face value. alright, a little more presumptuous but not unfounded.
fellow bylers have no media literacy for digging into the text in a way that you personally consider to be shallow or incorrect, or for going about analysis in a similar manner to you but drawing different conclusions, or for finding differing aspects of the text to be more or less significant or indicative of different things or-
sigh.
the thing about media analysis (or even just media interpretation) is that it’s impossible for it to be truly objective. everybody approaches a text with their own preconceived biases, preferences and life experiences. your perception of the text is invariably filtered through those, whether or not you acknowledge it or are even conscious of it. once you’ve already consumed the text once you develop new opinions specific to it, and these further filter the connections your mind draws upon reconsumption. as a result 2 people can watch the same show equally attentively and come to very different conclusions.
nobody will ever watch stranger things in a pure and objective way. nobody will ever watch it the exact same way as someone else. nobody will ever watch it the same was as either of the duffers would, the perspectives the text was written to be filtered through and arguably the only “correct” ones. we are all, in one form or another, wrong about the show. some of us are wrong in ways that more closely align with the true intentions and outcomes. in all likelihood we’ll never really know who those people are, and if we do it won’t be for more than a year.
so fuck it, embrace it. revel in being wrong with other people and seeing the breadth of interpretations that one netflix original show can encompass. if their takes don’t float your boat it just means their byler goggles have a different tint of glass. it’s fine to debate things as long as everybody actually wants to, but don’t belittle the perspectives of others for how they contrast your own and don’t try to convince them that your opinion is the one gospel truth. as far as we know there might not even be a definitive truth written into the show.
remember when we called ourselves delusionals??? we’re still delulu guys, the only thing we stopped was having fun with it.

hmmmm hmmmmm need to bnha critpost for a second cuz uhh yikes!!
not very fond of the toga and chako chapter,,, like yeah okay homoerotic togachako cool cool whatever uh??? we do acknowledge that toga's biggest problem atm is not "she needs to be a teenage girl!" and is in fact "her best friend, her BROTHER, died at the hands of a hero and despite being called out on this fact he still has not faced repercussions for his actions. she has spent her whole life wanting nothing more than to be herself and the one person she could be herself with has been ripped away by the same society that forced her to mask"
like we acknowledge that this "let's talk about romance together!" is not actually what she needs to complete her arc right. right?
