Can't wait to be an old crone
Old crones know what's up, they always have their titties out, always havin' a good time
Like hey you wanna go to this lame-ass non-crone event?
Nah I'm up late every night
Doin' crone shit

So I threw out my back a few days ago and have taken to hobbling around half bent over in the evenings. I just got an apple crisp in the oven, made with the apples my neighbor’s tree drops into my garden plot.
I have to say I’ve never felt more like a wizened and powerful crone. Just cackling in the kitchen of my cottage, moon framed by the redwoods overhead, as my sinister confection bubbles in the oven.

Dec 7th, 2022  Since my last update here I attended a couple of really inspiring shows. I saw Puscifer (no photos of that one because Maynard hates cameras) and Lingua Ignota (Kristin looked etherial and this photo doesn’t do her justice) back in October. They gave me a lot of thoughts about stagecraft/theater as ritual.
Watching Maynard’s various characters and personas perform a single show helped reassure me that I’m making the right choice with being Spectress for HÆGMILK rather than creating and performing under previous aliases. Aside from these candid public journal entries, I aspire to not break character during this project. I think that is an important aspect of the aforementioned “ritual of theater”. Seeing Lingua Ignota live (pictured above) was bittersweet knowing that she is about to retire that particular project/persona. The venue was very intimate lending to the spiritual quality of the show. I would describe it as a religious experience but in a much different way from the 3vangel!cal xtian ecstatic w0rship that she was parodying. (Inflammatory words self-censored so I don’t get found by the wrong side of music Tumblr.)  It is interesting to see how both artists have tackled the relationship between xtian religious trauma but also the innate influence of xtian music on America’s musical zeitgiest.  In other news, I also have a lead on an affordable recording space. So hopefully that will be available soon and I can finish this self-titled album.  When I start doing live performances I intend to take a more improvisational approach however. The techniques I use to record aren’t easily reproduced live. So expect more of an interpretive dance ritual while singing over a backing track. Hopefully I can at least find a percussionist and keyboardist who share my vision for live gigs. Sadly the cellist I had hoped to tour with decided to move away go back to college, which is good, but cellists are hard to find.   What’s meant to be will be. First I have to record more music once that studio opens, so in the meantime please enjoy the handful of tracks we have on SoundCloud and Bandcamp.

Adherents describe it as “less thoughts, more vibes” and if you’d rather be hot than think, the candy-pink, velveteen look that Britney and Paris made famous two decades ago is an unambiguous signifier of chosen modern levity. Ever the instinctive entrepreneur, Paris is – right now – retailing plush, 93%-polyester luxury on her website, so, yeah, a real thing is happening.
[...] learning the aesthetic exists to satirise the impossibility of meeting contemporary standards of femininity by aggressively performing them makes me desperate to embrace its slutty, pink resistance [...] Alas, I am more than uncomfortable in microskirts and a midriff top and the mere idea of platform shoes reminds me to call my physio. Wide-eyed pouting by the young registers as ironically Lolitaesque – but on a face like mine, it can only ever read as mockery.
Yet my jealousy persists, because how wonderful it is that activist young women and their friends have found a way to channel such a flagrant, public up-yours to the culture of gender policing that grows more exclusive and dangerous by the day. I mean this literally. There is a terrifying Venn overlap growing between capitalist criteria for feminised perfection and radical-right political demands to restrict the franchise of “womanhood” to ever-narrowing groups.
This last has anti-transgender protesters and actual Nazis on the streets of Melbourne and anti-trans laws in the US already kicking lesbians out of public bathrooms, given their visible unwillingness to perform gender the way extremists insist they should.
Meanwhile, the “tradwife” model homemakers of social media perform a highly merchandised ideal of womanliness without bimbocore’s snideness or irony. If you haven’t worked out tradwives are a soft power comms assault from the far right yet, the memes they post on Musk Twitter really – really – should give it away.
Older women paying attention have realised that the ambitious Nazi/anti-trans crossover events agitated for in US legislation come from wanting to rebrand women as mere vessels for patriarchal reproduction. If you think ageing female bodies maintain any social value in that calculus, you are wrong. Note the recent laws passed in Kansas restrict the definition of “female” to those still producing “ova”. If you are an infertile, childfree or menopausal woman, a cultural tradition of being made to feel unwomaned by these experiences is now no longer just a nasty social habit. It’s reality under Kansas law.
So what’s the appropriate aesthetic for the non-crop-top-compliant to express their resistance and refusal? There have been attempts to define a #cronecore and #hagcore but last time I let my greys grow out and wore a flanno to the shops, the messaging conveyed was hardly subversive. So now I have put in my order for a new tracksuit. My preference is black and hooded, and while I’m not out to culturally appropriate the aesthetic of the Ikkō-ikki I can certainly see the value of culture-jamming, gender-troublemakers learning how to vanish in a crowd. So let me now herald the arrival of the #NinjaCrone aesthetic.
In the public theatre of gender activism, imagine an army of assassin-attired older women haunting the dreams of every Nazi, tradwife, anti-trans-bathroom authoritarian and anti-abortionist and making them as afraid of us as the loud sluttiness of our bimbo sisters makes them uncomfortable. We’re invisible to patriarchy anyway, so let’s weaponise the social performance of the ageing woman as anonymous, omnipresent … and capable of anything.
The bimbos get it: the far right have already declared their gender war. If you want to fight it, grab a mask and suit up. They will never see us coming.

Work in progress and decisions to make.
Skipper: wonkeyes hit multiple snags (yep i’ve given them all silly names: wonkeyes, scar, shadow and halfbrows)
1/ when her scalp paint melted and I had to try scrubbing it off and in the end only acetone worked but part of her eyebrow got painted on her hair! (now removed) but her hair looks thinner without the paint.
2/ the parting got very close to ripping open at the front there’s only so much you can do with a very hole-y scalp
I’ve decide to not touch up the reroot for fear of making it worse but now I need to decide how to fix up her paint a little (possibly with brown eyes) but without losing the very specific era style.
Kassandra tan
an aliexpress head, possibly to stay with me on a curvy bod. In the spirit of ‘same thread’ I used up the minty green leftovers from skipper and cut some more, getting the curls to match the others will be the hardest part.
The wonk bundle: 5 dolls, 4 not what I expected.
I tried using paint shop pro on the ebay photos to figure out if the eyes were wonk on these dolls by drawing lines from ear holes and down the noses but ultimately the angles made it impossible to figure out and I bought it on a leap of faith: that the Cali girl Lea would be a small reroot job and that the Dahlia would have awful hair so I can reroot her in green (the colour missing from my fairytopia rainbow).
What happened was the opposite, the Cali girl Lea’s going to need a bigger reroot than I have dgkanekalon - to correct some of the wonk by changing the hairline.
Elina’s so wonky they didn’t align the eyes, the eyeshadow, the brows or the rooted lashes with the nicely defined eyewells. Body, hair, lips, wings, clothes: perfect but those eyes had to go. I have a fantasy head I can put on this cute body to resell but I’m conflicted over what to do with a perfectly rooted, zero glue head who’s lash holes will probably close up nicely with a boil. Anyone interested?
and Dahlia? Dahlia is perfection, her hair is barely yellowed, the mattedness brushed out perfectly, eyes a little intense but I can’t reroot her, on principle LOL. Anyone want to trade? For a bad hair dahlia or doll grade kanakalon.
Glam’s manic but perfectly aligned bald head is going in the just pay postage and Beach Fun Christie is wonked beyond my skillset but has very nice hair probably going in jpp too.
Might have to put it on hold anyway i’m on antibiotics for a bad sinusitus that have quite a kick to them (you have to sit very still for an hour after eating them to avoid projectile vomiting) and i’m having to take on some of the dog walks which leaves me drained even though it’s not far, it’s the anti mozzie prep (I change into trousers and a white shirt and cover myself in bug spray) and the heat that makes it extra effort.
In winter, so long as it’s not raining, I shuffle out in what i’m wearing: my fleecy booties and add a fluffy purple hooded robe that makes me look like comfy Gandalf. zero prep, total cronecore realness =)

Oct 16th, 2022 In other news: I know none of you are wondering how the album is coming along, but I’ll tell you anyway. I got stuck after writing a blues song that didn’t completely match the project, but the song was also really raw and only keeps becoming more and more relevant as the horrors of this years world events progress, so it’s emotionally difficult to finish.  My day job that pays the bills is eating up most of my creative energy. So while I have the track list for the album mostly planned out, starting and finishing said tracks is a struggle. There’s only a small weekly window of silence at my apartment that is conducive to recording, but it takes me several hours to really get in the zone. I know the solution would be to rent a recording studio, but I really don’t know if I should. I can’t justify spending the money on space since my music is a hobby, and I deliberately make it sound unmarketable so I know whatever money I spend on recording I am never going to make back.
Of course, this project is a spiritual pursuit, a magical experiment, and a cathartic exercise, so the should-I-or-shouldn’t-I of the recording studio rental is less about money and more about finding the balance between my daily mundane responsibilities and the magical life of my artist-self.
I know by virtue of having a stage persona I’ve committed to leading a double life. A life that was already split in half as a practicing witch who works a corporate job. But Spectress doesn’t pay the bills, [redacted] does. Spectress doesn’t have to eat, she’s just an egrigorical mantle. So understandably the human behind the mask isn’t thrilled at the idea of the fictional persona needing to spend her money. When we took on this project we thought we could record it all in our home on a laptop the way the bedroom pop girlies did in the 2010s.
Anyway, I am sure me and myself will come to an agreeable compromise. Until then, please enjoy the handful of tracks we have on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. And have a happy Halloween/Samhain season! <3
